00:00An influential photography gallery documenting working-class life in the
00:04Northeast has announced a new future. Side founded in 1977 by the Amber Film
00:10and Photography Collective closed in 2023 after funding cuts and rising costs.
00:16Plans to reopen were later dropped. Now side will open a curational office at
00:22the Baltic Center for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. The organizations will
00:26collaborate on future exhibitions while remaining independent. Side says the move
00:32is a pragmatic response to pressures on arts organizations and will help its
00:37collection reach wider audiences ahead of its 50th anniversary in 2027 with
00:43celebrations planned.
