1960s. Arden is an introvert kid who was brought up in a strict Catholic orphanage. Insecure about his voice, he pretends to sing during choir practice. With the arrival of Mr. Stevens, the new music teacher, his farce is discovered and the duo starts to work together. As the boy becomes more confident with his singing, a friendship is formed. But a stern Mother Superior notices changes in Arden's behavior and, concerned with his attachment to the teacher, breaks them apart. Abandoned once more in his life, Arden will struggle to find his own voice.

03:45Arden, sir.
03:49I could tell you weren't singing during rehearsal, Arden.
04:01Am I mistaken?
04:02Weren't you mouthing the words?
04:06If you want, I could practice with you after class.
04:15Think about it.
04:20Our Arden is top of his class, and he has an impeccable record.
04:26We are very proud of him.
04:28How old are you, Arden?
04:30Twelve, ma'am.
04:34He's been with us since he was a baby.
04:37No family ties.
04:40So, what do you want to know about us?
04:46Hi.
04:47He seems a little shy at first, but soon you'll get to know him better.
04:55Is that a music score in your hand?
05:01Arden is part of our choir.
05:03He has the voice of an angel.
05:05That's lovely, isn't it?
05:09Yes, indeed.
05:12You should get going, dear.
05:14It's been there.

06:38I want you to repeat my note, okay?
06:43I can't sing, sir.
06:49What do you mean, you can't sing?
06:53Why are you in the choir, then?
06:58Do you want to sing?
07:04All of the boys in the choir get adopted, sir.
07:18Have a seat.
07:25You play the notes.
07:28Uh, it's a bit high for me.
07:39Let's play.

09:51I'll just leave you alone then.
09:55I think I might be going to hell, sir.
09:58Why is that?
10:01Because I hate God.
10:04Well, that's it?
10:06No matter how hard I try, I'm still not good enough for them.
10:10What do you mean? You're a great kid.
10:12I wasn't for my mom and dad.
10:14Why'd they give me up then?
10:17You know, one of the nice things about getting older is you get to choose your family.
10:23This here?
10:39This isn't what your life is going to be.
10:42Unless you want to become a nun.
10:45You should get back.
10:57Brother, thank you.
11:22Come in.
11:47Would you like to explain?
11:52Arden, what were you doing out of bed?
11:57I don't understand.
11:59Why are you starting to act like this?
12:02You're so close to finding a family.
12:04I don't care.
12:07You don't care?
12:10I don't want to be adopted by anyone.
12:12Arden, this is your life we're talking about.
12:15Do you just want to get rid of me?
12:17That's not true.
12:19I know what's best for you.
12:22If you aren't adopted, you will have no one.
12:30I'll have Mr. Stevens.
12:32The boy is making progress.
12:34He is becoming a act.
12:35What is going to happen if you need to be a kid?
12:38As long as I'm here, I want him to learn from someone he's not afraid of.
12:41What do you want to be able to do?
12:43I was practicing this morning.
12:47I was practicing this morning.
13:01Finally hit the high note.
13:03Good.
13:05Should we start?
13:10Today isn't a good day.
13:12Okay, well, maybe tomorrow we can practice a little longer then.
13:17I'm afraid I can't.
13:19What happened?
13:23What did sister say?
13:27Nothing happened.
13:29It's just, um, the fundraiser is almost here and I don't have the time.
13:35Pardon.
13:36You said I was making progress.
13:41You can't give up on me!
13:47I can't continue to coach you, Arden.
13:54Maybe it would be best if you went back to mouthing the words.
14:01You're just like everyone else.
14:02You're just like, let's do this.
14:07You're just like there.
