What It Means for Taiwan To Be a Super-Aged Society

Taiwan has officially become a super-aged society, meaning one in every five people is 65 or older. More people need to take on caregiver roles, even as they grow older themselves.    “Ever since his health started to decline about half a year ago after he suffered internal bleeding, he would call out to me at night, about once every hour. I was really close to breaking down then,” says Ms. Huang, a 70-year-old who takes care of her 100-year-old father.   Over 570,000 seniors take care of their aging spouses or family members, meaning roughly one in eight seniors is caring for another elderly person.   Taiwan's government has responded by rolling out a range of long-term care services such as community and home care both in the day and at night, as well as options to hire migrant caregivers hourly rather than as live-in carers.
