Conservative MP Alex Burghart says that his party are advocating for there to be an 'age of consent' for social media use set at 16, similar to the ban on social media use for under-16s introduced in Australia. "[Children] are often being exposed to content that's completely inappropriate for their age", Burghart says.

00:00So we've said that we will raise the age of consent for young people using social media to 60
00:06and we've already said that we'll ban mobile phones in schools and this is the next stage of
00:11our intervention and we're doing this simply because far too many young people are firstly
00:17spending far too much time on social media platforms that are designed to capture their
00:22attention for long periods and also during the course of that they're often being exposed to
00:28content that's completely inappropriate for their age. So we're taking a very sensible and
00:33measured step to raise that age. It's in line with what parents want, it's actually in line with what
00:39children want and we're looking very closely at what's happening in Australia and France
00:43who are a few years ahead of us.
