00:08:54Looking here at our first team, Eliana Secunda and Terry Fairlaw.
00:08:58I mentioned Terry, somewhat of a veteran in Canadian skating.
00:09:02And here, Miyu Yunoki and Tristan Taylor represented Japan last season
00:09:09and have decided to switch to Canada this year.
00:09:13And here, just at the Junior Grand Prix Final in Nagoya, Japan, last month,
00:09:18it's Jasmine Ziroshi and Kieran Thrasher.
00:09:20This, a team that will be hoping for a spot on the Junior World team,
00:09:24but, like I mentioned, competing in senior domestically.
00:09:27I think it's a good move to gain experience in the Senior National Championships for Jasmine and Kieran.
00:09:32They have some really strong programs.
00:09:36Haven't been able to put it all together yet, but you know what?
00:09:41That's part of the process.
00:09:42They'd like to do it here and perhaps at the Junior World Championships.
00:09:46That's right.
00:09:47Taking a look here at our first team to skate, it's Eliana and Terry,
00:09:51who teamed up together when Ellie moved to Montreal in November of 2024,
00:09:57but a series of injuries really hindered their training all the way until May of last year,
00:10:03May 2025, when Terry had to get surgery for a ruptured tendon in his upper arm.
00:10:08So it has been a tough start to this team's partnership.
00:10:11They say that they know that in order to be competitive,
00:10:13they have to continue adding more difficult elements to their programs,
00:10:17but no doubt excited to finally be at a competition at Challenge last month and here at Nationals.
00:10:25Those injuries, of course, we've talked a lot about it.
00:10:27Every one of our commentators have mentioned about the injuries of their athletes that were watching at the time.
00:10:35It's just part of this business, and it's not only this sport.
00:10:37It's every sport has injuries, of course.
00:10:39So you have to learn how to get through that time period, get back into the event and the training.
00:10:46That's right.
00:10:46It's a normal part of sport.
00:10:48It really is how you and the team around you manage it and get you back.
00:10:53On the proverbial horse, looking here, oh, that was me, you and Tristan, and now looking at Jasmine.
00:11:01Jasmine and Kieran have had a very successful season on the Junior Grand Prix
00:11:06and recently competed as seniors at the Ice Challenge in Graz, Austria.
00:11:13And this really, for me, a team for the future.
00:11:15We see them occasionally struggling with the throw elements,
00:11:19though this week I have to say they have been amazing in practice.
00:11:23So I really hope for them that we get to see the reward,
00:11:29that they've obviously been training so very hard on these elements,
00:11:32and hopefully we can see that in their competition.
00:11:35And for Jasmine, she was a recreational skater not so long ago,
00:11:39so she transferred into competitive skating and into para skating, which she hadn't done before.
00:11:43So it's been a bit of a journey, but she's certainly a wonderful para skater.
00:11:47All para teams this evening in their short program will be doing one throw.
00:11:54They can elect to do any throw that they like.
00:11:57That's different than in the Junior event.
00:11:59In the Junior event we mentioned, it was a prescribed throw,
00:12:02but here in Senior they can choose any.
00:12:04Eliana and Thierry will be going for the throw triple Sao-Cow.
00:12:10The throwing elements have different base values,
00:12:14so the throw triple Sao-Cow is worth the least.
00:12:16The throw triple flip or let's the most,
00:12:18apart from a throw triple axel, which skaters could do,
00:12:22but we won't see any this evening.
00:12:26And they're a beautiful example of a throw triple Sao-Cow by Miu and Tristan.
00:12:30They train in Colorado Springs with Drew Meekins and Natalia Mishkutinuk
00:12:34and just started skating together in July.
00:12:36She looks like she has lots of personality.
00:12:39You know what?
00:12:40I've never met Miu personally, but every time I see her skate, she's smiling.
00:12:43Yeah.
00:12:46Well, there's a good-sized crowd in the audience,
00:12:52which really adds to the buzz of the arena, the excitement,
00:12:55sometimes maybe a little bit of the nerves for the athletes,
00:12:57but I would say excitement and anticipation of their performance.
00:13:02And we've seen great performances throughout today,
00:13:05and we hope that carries through.
00:13:06Here we see the warm-up twist, as you've talked about in the past.
00:13:11Yeah, that's right.
00:13:11That's a progression.
00:13:12That's just a single twist.
00:13:13Jasmine and Kieran will do a triple twist in their short program this evening.
00:13:17Some teams will elect to do a double,
00:13:20but teams are allowed to do a double or a triple twist in the short program.
00:13:25Jasmine and Kieran have a wonderful twisting element.
00:13:29Now, how hard is it?
00:13:31They've gone from junior program length to senior program length.
00:13:35How hard was it for them to transition from just a month ago at the Junior Grand Prix Final?
00:13:40You know what?
00:13:41They've been doing it kind of all season because they had the competition in Gratz before the Junior Grand Prix Final.
00:13:46And when I spoke to, actually, a team that's not on this warm-up, but we'll see on the next warm-up,
00:13:52Ava Kemp and Yonatan Elizorov, their coach told me that training senior programs really made their junior programs feel much easier
00:14:00because they go from doing three lifts in the free and senior to two in the junior free program.
00:14:05So certainly a benefit to that training, but definitely would have to be a strategy that the coaching teams come up with
00:14:12to ensure that they're getting an adequate amount of training in both levels
00:14:17and that their timing is working out for them, too.
00:14:21And with their eyes clearly focused on senior next year, just continuing to be in the senior category.
00:14:26I think they age out, actually.
00:14:27Some of them age out in the juniors, so they're focused on what will come over the next four years.
00:14:32Absolutely, and I think they'll step into senior really wonderfully internationally,
00:14:37and already we're seeing it at the domestic level.
00:14:40And this team has a lot to offer, as do Ava and Yoni, who we'll see in the next group.
00:14:47And I think it's really exciting for Canada that we have these great teams
00:14:51that are already representing so well on the international stage,
00:14:55but we also can see what the future looks like in the pair discipline.
00:14:58And I think that Canada is in really good hands with some of these young teams.
00:15:02How many years does it take?
00:15:03You know, you have how many partners, two partners, three partners?
00:15:07I had three.
00:15:08Three partners.
00:15:09You have a big smile on your face.
00:15:11I had three.
00:15:12But, you know, how often, you know, do you need to transition?
00:15:16There's different circumstances for a change of a team, of course.
00:15:20And is it, you know, difficult to have a partner that may not have done pair skating?
00:15:24How much longer does it take to get comfortable as a pair skater
00:15:27with a partner who was originally not a pair skater?
00:15:32I think it really depends on the experience of the partner who has done pairs before
00:15:38and also the experience of the coaching team,
00:15:40but certainly a couple of years to get really comfortable.
00:15:44Well, as we get started here, the final event here on day four
00:15:47at the Skate Canada National Championships,
00:15:50our first team, 25-year-old Eliana Sukunda
00:15:52and 28-year-old Terry Furland from Quebec.
00:15:55I mentioned Ellie and Terry started skating together in November of 2024,
00:16:01but injuries really sidelined them until May of 2025.
00:16:06They're in their debut at National Skating to Maybe,

00:19:22Ted, I was really impressed with the side-by-side triple Saucal because I didn't see that executed successfully too many times in practice this morning.
00:19:31But such a shame on the fall and then the stumble on the step sequence because that is an element that I think really is a highlight for this team at this stage.
00:19:41In their career.
00:19:42So it was unfortunate that we didn't get to see that in their performance.
00:19:47Yeah, success early on and then the stumble, you just tighten up a little bit and then you worry about another mistake and just the small little mistakes there.
00:19:55But coming off the ice both with a smile and supporting each other.
00:19:59I'm sure that Thierry is thrilled to be back at the National Championships after four years.
00:20:06Wow.
00:20:06And Eliana looks to be enjoying her first Canadian National Championships.
00:20:13But there were a number of little errors here.
00:20:16Let's take a look.
00:20:17So this team had a goal of including the triple twist in their program at Nationals.
00:20:22They did not do it at the Skate Canada Challenge event, but we can see a little bit pretty messy on the way down.
00:20:30And so they're only earning 3.13 points here.
00:20:34The side-by-side triple Saucal.
00:20:35Eliana's fighting, but does a good job to hang on to it.
00:20:40Here their group five lift.
00:20:42They're doing a group five reverse.
00:20:43It's in at a level three.
00:20:47Oh.
00:20:49We saw a slight stumble from Thierry.
00:20:55And into their throw, triple Saucal.
00:20:57She's really low on the landing.
00:21:01So this will force the judges to input a negative grade of execution.
00:21:05So they will lose some marks off of the base value of that throw.
00:21:10This is the backward inside death spiral.
00:21:13We're not getting to see it take a look at the step sequence.
00:21:16It was in at a level two with, of course, the mandatory fall deduction and the negative in the grade of execution there as well.

00:25:48Looking at the sheet here, most of the elements are in the positive grade of execution, just

00:25:54So we'll see triple twists from the later teams, and they will for sure want to include that.

00:47:51They will skate their short program to Asturias, choreographed by Mark Palais and Paul Bull.

00:52:17This, though, they did a really great job to refocus, get back into it.

00:52:28This, their group five reverse lift.
00:52:31It's in at a level 4, it's in at a level 4, great position from Kellyanne, and Luca has really nice, clean, steady turns.
00:52:38They're back inside, they're in at a level 3, the choreographer, the choreographer told me they picked this music because they wanted something high-octane to get fierceness out of them in a short program, and I think in many cases this season it's been really effective.

00:52:58Today, I think, unfortunately, the mistakes really took them out of the performance.
00:53:02You can see that they're disappointed there.
00:53:09Yeah, you want for every athlete to come off the ice, thrilled with their performance, 64.92, and they don't even mind that score.
00:53:16They said that seems to be okay with that mistake that puts them currently in the second place, but very close to Eva and Jonathan.
00:53:24Our next team represents Ontario 21-year-old Leah Pereira and 29-year-old Trent Michaud out of the Milton Skating Club, coached by Alison Perkis, Nancy LaMere, and Michael Maranero.

01:04:24has to touch the ice with one of her hands so that's getting a little bit of a reduction in
01:04:30the grade of execution not this though this is the step sequence it's in at a level four clean turns
01:04:37great backflip here the group five lift change of position max let's go he's on a difficult
01:04:45one arm for two revolutions diana performing all the way and there's their difficult dismount and
01:04:51here the back inside death spiral also in at a level four so all leveled elements for diana and max
01:04:59have been awarded level four today which is of course the highest so that's going to increase
01:05:04their total score by quite a margin that coupled with the grade of execution that they're getting
01:05:10yeah it's nice to see them come off they say both look happy they got a smile on their face supporting
01:05:14one another there's the score 78.35 first in the short program the free program coming up tomorrow
01:05:24and that's that score with the reduction on the throw triple loop so that's a really great score
01:05:31to compete with the best in the world starting to compete to combine and get more momentum as they
01:05:38go into the olympics in february so look at the final standings in the senior parish short program
01:05:44on day four the final event christian any final thoughts you know what is a little bit up and down
01:05:52today ted we saw some disappointment from a few teams that i i don't think we expected coming into this
01:05:58event having watched practice this morning but we also saw some really exciting new talent and
01:06:03think we're in for a great free program tomorrow regardless yeah it's going to be exciting for sure

01:07:06as we're accustomed to seeing from leah and trent but highlighted by things like this wonderful group
01:07:12five reverse lift done at the highest level with wonderful quality
01:07:17and the back inside desk spiral they'll want to regroup for tomorrow
01:07:23show a free program that they'll be proud of and that can take them hopefully into the second half
01:07:29of the season and here three-time canadian champions diana stilato dudek and maxim de champ
