00:00I thought, wow, this could be the end of Kai.
00:17Show me your hands! Show me your hands right now!
00:20Hey, get out of the street!
00:21Hands! Show me your f***ing hands!
00:24You're a f***er!
00:27Get her out of there!
00:38It was scary.
00:39I knew that time was running out.
00:41I'm excited for everyone for you.
00:43Show me your f***ing hands right now.
00:45Yeah, come on, come on!
00:57On U.S. Route 60, first grade teacher Charmaine Fernando is driving to work and recording on her dash cam.
01:15So that morning, I was teaching at Tempe, and that was about a 25-minute drive with no traffic.
01:22I'm on the 60, and then I ended up behind the cement truck.
01:26It was very scary.
01:44My heart was pounding.
01:47He hit the brakes, and then he started to slow down-ish.
01:55And then he veered off towards the left.
02:01When he hit the truck, the truck went flying up on the side, and then he hits, like, four other cars.
02:10And then, obviously, the truck was on fire, which was terrifying.
02:16Less than a mile behind Charmaine, police officer Brian Laurison is traveling to the city of Chandler to begin his shift.
02:24That morning, I just had this feeling, ah, just take the 60 today.
02:28And I'm like, ah, that'd be quick and easy.
02:31All of a sudden, boom, the red taillights were on.
02:43That's when I knew something wasn't right.
02:48My mind was telling me whoever was in that burning truck probably got out.
03:13I used my motorcycle to block that lane.
03:16And I grabbed my flashlight, and I was signaling for the traffic to go around us.
03:22I saw hands in the windshield.
03:35And I'm like, oh, they're trapped.
03:38It hit me.
03:40A vehicle on fire, it could be a ticking time bomb.
03:51Anything's possible.
03:53Here, here, here, get out of the way, get out of the way.
04:05I started hitting the window, and I felt like I was hitting a wall.
04:08And it's just like it wasn't breaking.
04:13And I saw hands.
04:14I hear screaming and yelling.
04:16Help me, save me.
04:18Get out of the way.
04:25I felt like I was battling time at that point.
04:28I wasn't thinking of the heat.
04:30I wasn't thinking of anything other than, I'm not going to let this person die.
04:37I saw her leg coming out.
04:52And I'm like, okay, she's getting out.
04:55Get out, get out, get out.
04:58And all of a sudden, I turn around and the truck falls back on all four tires.
05:04It was scary.
05:06I knew that time was running out.
05:09Get her out of there.
05:11Get her out.
05:12Get her out, dude.
05:13I looked, and I saw the firefighter.
05:22I'm like, he just appeared out of nowhere.
05:25Seeing him was like, you know, an angel, if you will.
05:32Peoria firefighter Asa Pagia is also traveling to work on the 60 that morning.
05:38I noticed a column of smoke, a black column of smoke.
05:44I know this truck was fully involved on fire.
05:50I had no other choice in my head but to stop and help.
05:55Car fires are some of the hottest fires that you can encounter.
05:59A car fire can burn upwards of 1,000 to 2,000 degrees.
06:04The tires can explode.
06:06The fuel tank can explode.
06:08Get out.
06:13And I saw the woman's legs kind of get thrown back into the vehicle.
06:21I definitely felt some adrenaline, some desperation.
06:24I saw a faint glimpse of her feet.
06:26And I thought, I got to make this quick.
06:28Get her out of there.
06:31Get her out, dude.
06:38Get back from the truck.
06:39Get back.
06:40Get back.
06:47I can't imagine what she was feeling when she was feeling that heat and struggling to breathe.
06:52When she came out, that was a sigh of relief, you know.
07:01Hold that.
07:03Hold that.
07:05Okay, relax.
07:06Relax.
07:07Relax.
07:08We got you.
07:09We got you.
07:10Anybody else in there?
07:11My next concern was, did you have kids in the car?
07:13Was there anybody in the back seat?
07:14But she said no.
07:17I later found out that she had just dropped her kids off right before this happened.
07:20Get away from the truck.
07:21Help me.
07:22Help me.
07:23You good, man?
07:24Yeah, we're good.
07:25We're good.
07:26We're glad you're here, brother.
07:27Well, I was just going in.
07:28Right here.
07:29It's good, right here.
07:30It's good.
07:31All right.
07:32I said something to the fact that I was like, brother, I'm so glad you're here.
07:37But it was, it was, I was so happy to see it.
07:42You'll be okay, sweetheart.
07:43You'll be okay.
07:44It's just tires going off.
07:45That's all.
07:46All right.
07:47You're okay.
07:48It's really good.
07:49I just held on to her.
07:51I was pretty much relieved.
07:54You know, we got her out.
07:56So.
08:03The driver of the cement truck is cited by the Arizona Department of Public Safety for failing to control the vehicle and avoid a collision.
08:13The pickup driver, mother of three, Amy Ruiz, is taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.
08:23Oh, God.
08:26One day later, she is reunited with her rescuers.
08:29Oh, God.
08:36We got you.
08:39It felt so good hearing that from you.
08:41My heart felt full seeing their faces again.
08:44There's really no words to describe it.
08:46What they did was heroic, courageous, just brave.
08:52It's just insane.
08:54Insane.
08:55When I heard the driver was okay, I just breathed a sigh of relief.
09:01Thank God she didn't die.
09:05You know, just going to work after I was crying, like, it was crazy.
09:09It was a horrible thing to see.
09:12Would I do it all over again?
09:15Yeah, absolutely.
09:16Would I do it for anybody?
09:17Absolutely.
09:18I would.
09:19Because that's what we do.
09:20Absolutely.
09:21Would I do it for anybody?
09:22Absolutely.
09:23I would.
09:24Because that's what we do.
09:2612 off by my central traffic stop, Florida.
09:27Toavan.
09:28jarvix-å”±-
09:4612 off by my central traffic stop florida
09:50actually we have 12 off northbound on nova from isabel florida for nissan white male
10:04driver white fema passenger i'll be shut down
10:06all right stand by they're going down knox drive a routine traffic stop is now a pursuit
10:19after the driver and his female passenger make a getaway
10:23it is fairly common for the person that's fleeing to drive erratically to try to lose the police
10:32and northbound isabel now i'm a good way behind him but i can see him turning
10:3811 or sticks approved
10:45all right he's pretty high rate of speed northbound isabel i'm gonna lose
10:55all right he's pretty high rate of speed northbound isabel i'm gonna lose him
11:07a pursuit is underway in port orange florida after a driver failed to stop for police
11:13nine in the morning someone fleeing from a traffic stop is absolutely out of the ordinary
11:20he's come up to conwell in just a second but i'm way behind him now
11:24all right i think he kept going north past conwell he's way up there it looks like he's
11:38gonna go all the way out where he comes up to ridgewood
11:40usually they have a good reason to run from us they could may have just killed somebody
11:49they may have 20 pounds of cocaine strapped under their car
11:54okay guys let's try and layer up some sticks here space them out a little bit with each other
12:03officers up ahead tried to disable the fleeing car
12:17but the driver takes evasive action
12:39the volusia sheriff's office helicopter is mobilized and quickly locates the suspect
12:58looks like he just struck a car
13:00looks like he just struck a car
13:05everyone you have them you just went southbound
13:13yeah southbound on uh standby looks like knob hill south on knob hill
13:20turn four
13:22he's pulling into a yard
13:28he's in the grass pulling in behind the house
13:34there's a lot of things going through your mind at that point we don't know if he's going to run into
13:41somebody's house we don't know if he's had a gun in the car and he's taking the gun with them
13:48yeah get get on spruce creek towards the drive he's running in that direction
13:55in the car in the car in the yard
13:57in the yard
13:58in the yard
13:59in the yard
14:02back there
14:04back there
14:11back there
14:13In the yard.
14:17Backyard.
14:18Backyard.
14:21Put your house to the end.
14:41Hey! Hey!
14:43Don't be a **** here!
14:45the box right here in the woods here are you good
15:00hey are you 10-4 the girl was taken into custody pretty quickly once we ran up into the backyard
15:15now we have this male outstanding we're trying to figure out where he may have gone
15:26show me your hands come out with your hands up
15:32it's still tense we don't know if he's just going to pop out with a gun when we're not looking
15:37he's ducking down somewhere or he ran this way
15:46come on your hands up my adrenaline's pumping my heart's racing
15:54the search for the suspect now moves into thick woodland making it difficult for officers to find
16:00him here one you have eyes on him no he went into trees we lost him as soon as you bailed
16:08yeah he came straight he went straight into the woods straight from the car
16:18canine officer kevin nugent and his dog draco joined the hunt i brought the dog up to the last known
16:25area where the suspect was gave him the command to track and then basically free lining the dog
16:31looking for the dog to show a sign that he's you know on odor
16:39the way scent works is basically the skin has different chemicals in it that put off a specific
16:47odor to you as an individual so the dogs are able to recognize that scent as well as ground disturbance
16:55it's super exciting going on a canine track dogs going crazy sniffing the ground you're having to
17:21scan all around you because you are the eyes and ears for that canine handler
17:27all right we've got some super inside i don't know if they're gonna be some officers or the suspect
17:31or something that looks like a crossing
17:42i see some footprints and the dogs showing a good proximity to odor in that area
17:51yeah there was some on this side of the canal i just don't know where exactly they were
17:57at i never saw them back here where they came in at exactly wait wait wait what is that up in the
18:02tree the shoe up there open the tree oaks you're right here on the back side there's a shoe in the
18:08body show me your hands show me your hands right now if you move you will be bit by the canine do not move
18:19do not move or you'll be dead all of a sudden i see our suspect up in the tree um just kind of frozen
18:29if you try to run that dog will bite you do not run when you get down i got a taser on you
18:49keep working your way down if you try to run you're gonna get dog bitter tased
18:53you better slowly come down that tree with nothing in your hand
19:06crawl down crawl down
19:13you jump that's gonna hurt don't drop her it's gonna hurt if you run the dog to bite
19:17she's gonna hurt as well
19:26and he started crawling farther out in the tree then he's getting you to 18 feet up 20 feet up
19:32probably 25 feet up at the highest you're gonna end up breaking your leg get out of the tree
19:39north but he's literally in a tree right now trying to climb
19:41the park
19:47did that keep it
19:49you drop you better stay right where you're at that dog could bite you
19:52he just sprung up like a like a kangaroo and
20:22started running
20:33he's fine the dog can see
20:34you're an idiot dude hold it hold it hang on
20:47dude how dumb are you
20:48the suspect is identified as jonathan kaiser
20:59when he failed to stop for police he was driving an unregistered vehicle with a suspended license
21:05he is charged with multiple offenses including a felony of recklessly fleeing and attempting to elude
21:12officers kaiser is sentenced to 21 months and nine days in prison
21:20the female passenger is not convicted of any offenses
21:23it was incredibly satisfying to get him um it was a lot of hard work we were out there for a long time so we probably
21:36were out tracking with the dog for well over an hour
21:40the way he was driving it really is fortunate that nobody got hurt from any of it and
21:45i couldn't be happier with the way things turned out
22:00when at 9-1-1 what's the location of the emergency my granddaughter had a boyfriend who's been
22:11violent with her all of a sudden our door was unlocked he walked up into her head when
22:16was the gun in her face trying to kill him we run in our house and now he's outside somewhere with a gun
22:21the gun in her face and now he's out there and he's out there and he's out there and he's out there
22:27with an armed suspect on the loose gwinnett county police units and the helicopter quickly scramble to
22:33the location to search for him we're already flying this night and uh we hear the call go out and
22:39because we were already in the air we were first on scene night time uh for us to keep eyes on an
22:45individual we use our clear 380 hd camera we have infrared capabilities at night time i always check
22:55the instant location and work my way out our job as the aviation is to essentially be a command post
23:02from the sky guide units to where they need to go
23:05officers are now on scene and talking with the victim to get a description of the suspect
23:31in the beginning of our relationship levi was actually pretty good
23:35but it started to become very controlling i could tell like something wasn't right with him at all
23:43after i had finally broke up with him he turns around pulls a gun out of his waistband
23:49puts it to my head and says i'm gonna blow this all i could think was my grandma's gonna find me dead
23:58and that's when my grandma busted through the door and i ran out the door and just cried and
24:07waited until he got out of the house 412 radio update 78 it's gray shorts black long sleeve navy blue
24:16backpack above them the police helicopter continues to scan the nearby streets
24:34everyone ready i believe we got eyes on the subject there behind uh
24:43i saw a subject peek around the back side of the home kind of in between two homes and then walked
24:51back behind the home to take cover so i immediately updated that information to the ground officers there
24:58chief pilot lepitzki tracks the suspect while pilot senior diego galasso controls the helicopter
25:06after we spot him we start getting resources to try to lock that location down
25:10at the end of this just pulling up right out your driver's side door stop right there stop right
25:19there there you go that house right off your uh back left tire just keep walking straight maybe uh stay
25:26right there and uh we get somebody else here uh he's coming back around here come back
25:33all right he's running down uh behind
25:43you don't know what's going on uh in a suspect's mind at that moment
25:48my biggest concern is that they actually use the firearm and they harm somebody
25:52when it county officers are in pursuit of an armed suspect who has assaulted and threatened his ex-girlfriend
26:09let's just uh get a printer set up since canine's coming
26:12to help with the manhunt canine unit corporal carlisle and his dog kai are dispatched to the scene
26:34but they had a guy that was on the ground on foot and they need a canine to come track
26:38them and we're going to use uh kai and we're going to go in and find this individual
26:52the bond i have with kai is it's a special one
26:59kai is the best police dog and he's my buddy
27:08that last
27:13K-1 and K-9, 12 o'clock, just jumped the fence, 50 feet into the woods.
27:36I had a nice, clear heat signature of him, and then as soon as he went into the woods,
27:45it was slowly going away.
27:52All right, it's really thick.
27:54Is there another way we can get around?
27:57So the fence to your right was the yard that he hopped the fence, so if you want to go over
28:03that fence there, if not, just follow that fence line.
28:06All the way back.
28:09When we hear an individual goes into the wood line, and it's, you know, we're going to
28:13be at a disadvantage because it's, you know, heavily dense woods and stark.
28:28I know.
28:30I'm trying to feed him.
28:31The thing is, is the dog, they're down low to the ground, so they can get through that
28:38a little easier because they're so low to the ground where we're having to bob and weave
28:42and duck and crawl and cuss and everything else to get through that.
28:48Can I have that one?
28:49Do you set it down?
28:50I can't tell.
28:51All I got is a sling.
28:52What's about 20 feet?
28:54The officer to the furthest left here at 12 o'clock.
29:00The air helicopter was telling us that we were getting pretty close, but it's really,
29:04it's so thick.
29:05It's to the point where I don't see anything.
29:08I'm looking at Kai and, uh, I don't see him anymore.
29:14I don't see him anymore.
29:44After the volley of fire, it goes dark.
29:51And
29:52Here, Kai!
30:03Kai!
30:05Kai!
30:06Kai!
30:07Here, Mike!
30:12Kai!
30:13I remember pulling on the lead and, uh, I, I, I just meet resistance.
30:33Kai, here!
30:34Kai, here!
30:40Kai, here!
30:40Where's he at?
30:47I don't know.
30:49Kai, here!
30:55Kai, here!
30:57He's over here!
31:00Show me your hands!
31:00show me your hands now show me your hands show me your hands put your hands up now
31:10i could see kai in my peripheral he was just to his right of the suspect and i could see him kind
31:20of just flaring around a little bit so i knew he was still alive at that time
31:25is that you oh okay
31:31he's hit
31:37is he down
31:43yep don't reach for that gun kicked it out kicked it out go
31:51don't worry about it i'm turning them over turn them to you
31:58where's the i kicked it over to the right
32:02tip them over
32:14officer sin check and officer otillo immediately moved in
32:28and uh and affected arrest on the suspect
32:33once we approached him made sure they had him in custody we have to offer him first aid if he needs
32:54first aid and then we'll deal with kai unfortunately the dog is blast it's you know officer rescue
33:05suspect rescue and then they came
33:10heroin iridium if the force for the dog and the suspect
33:15he's in the hospital
33:19you're gonna be in route with the dog
33:21head down
33:23yep
33:24check for him
33:27yeah he's in
33:29i'm trying to figure out
33:32he's on the side somewhere
33:35somewhere on the side
33:37we stayed on the suspect as he was brought out an officer started uh giving uh providing the suspect his first aid
33:56stay with me what's your name what's your name
33:59levi
34:00levi
34:01levi
34:02i don't know if there's actually room
34:03levi we're getting help coming
34:06we're about to get his gun
34:08come here buddy
34:10all right
34:12i need to get the dog out
34:14okay
34:15you guys clear pad
34:20come on buddy
34:24i don't know how bad his injuries were
34:28and there was some blood
34:29i could see the blood
34:31and i was preparing myself that
34:34this is probably not going to be a good outcome
34:37it's all right buddy
34:38it's okay buddy
34:45back up
34:46where did you hit
34:47i don't know
34:48corporal carlisle is desperately trying to get his canine partner kai to a vet
34:52after he was shot at close range
34:55sometimes
34:56this is his
34:59where is he
35:02where is he
35:03you first
35:05where is it
35:06where is it
35:07it's in his leg
35:08yeah okay
35:09show it there back
35:10there was a lot of blood zipped on my back
35:12yes here
35:13you see it
35:14i just look over him really quick
35:17them really quick and I make the I make the call that there was nothing that I
35:24could do right then and there that was gonna do make a difference
35:47we were lights and sirens we had officers throughout the county in the cities they
36:11were blocking every intersection I don't think we had it we didn't stop once
36:17probably said this name a million times on the way from the scene to the hospital
36:34and I thought wow this this could be it you know this could be the end of Kai
36:58yeah it's coming up pretty steady on this album
37:19yeah I called down right here the one here heavy on the elbow okay maybe yeah I don't know okay so
37:46I do worry because when we pull them out the amount of blood that he starts I see that he's
37:57actually losing step back and I think that's the first time I realized that he got shot twice
38:04I want him to hear my voice and you know know that with all the other voices going on in there up here
38:31still you start thinking about you know
38:34like the first time you met the first time you're like you found somebody the first time you found
38:48a big big narcotic find all the training you've been through all the headaches the tears the frustration
38:55the everything you start thinking about how he destroys your house and grabbed a hold of the grill
39:03cover the other day and all that good stuff and all that stuff just comes all all together all those
39:10memories start coming in and just start flooding in
39:28to lose a canine partner is like you're losing a friend
39:32everyone has you know their hero you know whatever there's superman spider-man the incredible Hulk whatever
40:00but he's he's my hero he doesn't know it but he is best thing about it is I get to see him every day
40:13the perpetrator Levi Kennedy Bryan makes a full recovery he is charged with nine criminal counts
40:30including causing serious or debilitating injury to a police dog he pleads guilty and is sentenced to
40:37eight years in prison eight years in prison and 17 years on probation
40:43I think the one thing that I really took away from that night is that it can happen to you
40:50the slightest sign of violence you need to leave because it can turn into this
41:01in the blink of an eye I don't think that the paranoia will ever leave
41:07but I'm still living and I'm fine and he didn't scare me into a hole
41:14or take any of my life quality away he ruined his not mine
