Russia unleashed its fearsome Oreshnik ballistic missile in a massive overnight assault on Ukraine, killing four and injuring 25 in Kyiv. Thunderous explosions echoed for hours, lighting up the night sky in one of the most intense strikes in recent months.

It was only the second use of the missile, after Dnipro in November 2024. Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed another ballistic strike hit infrastructure near Lviv, close to Poland, as Moscow claimed retaliation for an alleged drone attack on Vladimir Putin’s residence—an accusation Kyiv firmly denies.

00:00Russia has sent a thunderous
00:29message to Kyiv and its Western backers.
00:32Overnight, Moscow unleashed the Oreshnik hypersonic missile on Ukraine, a rare and deliberate
00:39show of force using one of Russia's most advanced strategic weapons.
00:45The strike underscores Russia's resolve as winter deepens, and the conflict enters a
00:49decisive phase.
00:52The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed a massive coordinated strike using high-precision, long-range
00:58weapons from land and sea.
01:04At the heart of the attack was the Oreshnik mobile medium-range missile system, capable
01:09of carrying multiple warheads and both conventional or nuclear payloads.
01:16Ukrainian air defenses acknowledged the missile's extraordinary speed.
01:21Ukraine's Air Command West said the projectile traveled at roughly 13,000 kilometers per hour,
01:28nearly 10 times the speed of sound, along a ballistic trajectory.
01:33Such speeds make interception extremely difficult.
01:36Russia's missile forces have previously stated that the Oreshnik's range allows it to reach
01:41targets across Europe.
01:44Last month, Moscow released footage showing the system deployed in Allied Belarus, reinforcing
01:49its strategic depth and deterrence posture.
01:56The launch carried political significance.
01:59Moscow said the attack was a direct response to what it described as Ukraine's attempted strike
02:04on President Vladimir Putin's residents last month, as well as growing Western military
02:10involvement.
02:11The launch came as Russia reiterated that any European troops deployed to Ukraine under a
02:16future peace deal would be considered legitimate targets.
02:20The message is clear.
02:21Moscow will not tolerate foreign military encroachment near its borders.
02:27Ukraine says Russia fired 18 missiles and more than 240 drones overnight, with strikes hitting
02:33Kyiv and other areas.
02:35For Moscow, the Oreshnik launch was not escalation for escalation's sake, but a calculated demonstration
02:42of technological superiority and strategic resolve.
