00:00This is freedom. Pick your Vista. Anyone you like.
00:05Pursuing bucket list experiences.
00:09Yay!
00:10And newfound freedoms.
00:12We could walk around butt naked if we wanted to.
00:15While Brexit has made it a battle.
00:17I've applied for two visas. I've been denied two visas.
00:21Many are still giving it a go.
00:23Come on.
00:23I wanted to know what else life had to offer.
00:26I like the idea of just spending every day together, don't we?
00:29We do.
00:30From launching bike tours in Spain...
00:33This is my office here. I couldn't ask for more.
00:35..to glamping sites in Italy.
00:37Build it and they will come. We hope.
00:41But will it be a smooth ride?
00:45Or their ideas come crashing down...
00:48Oh, my God!
00:50..as they begin their new lives in the sun.
00:53It's an adventure. Loving life.
00:56Today...
00:57Ready for another day in the sunny Dardyne?
00:59After a bumper launch night, can a pair of publicans keep the tills ringing?
01:04I'm just making a little sign with our opening times.
01:07Then we're going to go into the lake and put it up.
01:09In Spain, there's cause for celebration.
01:12I'm officially a resident.
01:13But is it one step forward and two back?
01:16For a couple's guest house renovations...
01:19Slightly bigger hole than we expected.
01:21It looks like we've just had an earthquake.
01:23And after winning the keys to a French B&B on a TV game show...
01:28What the...?
01:29What the...?
01:29What the...?
01:30A couple from Belfast claim their life-changing prize.
01:34Do you feel like it's real?
01:35Oh, God, yeah.
01:36I don't... I just don't feel like we're in someone else's house.
01:39I guess it's not an everyday occurrence where you get a house handed to you.
01:42For many British families, the daily grind has become just that.
01:57A grind.
01:58With barely any time to enjoy the moments that really matter.
02:02Oh, there's a pecan there.
02:04I've never been in that one.
02:05But the Dunn family from Huddersfield decided they weren't going to settle for that.
02:10There we go. We can start practising horse riding already.
02:15I'll get some cowboy boots.
02:18Emily and Dave, along with kids Willow and Hugo,
02:21have moved to the Dordogne in south-west France,
02:24where family time isn't a luxury, it's made a priority.
02:29Bonjour.
02:34From exploring local markets together
02:37or enjoying the countryside surrounding their new home
02:40in the village of Santestef.
02:43We wanted them to be free on the bike.
02:46Free to move around and bike ride and enjoy the countryside.
02:50This land's ever!
02:53You're definitely taking advantage of it, aren't you?
02:55Yeah, 100%.
02:56To sustain their new lives here,
02:59the couple bought and recently relaunched an English-style pub.
03:03Ready for another day in the sunny Dordogne.
03:06A big career change for former car sales manager Dave
03:10and travel agent Emily.
03:12I'm not very good at looking after plants.
03:13I like to kill them.
03:15We're creating a hub for people, aren't we?
03:17Somewhere where hopefully pull the French in and the English
03:20and, you know, allow people to meet people that they've not met before
03:25and just, yeah, bring the community together.
03:30But after sinking a huge chunk of their savings
03:33into getting their new business open,
03:36it's now important they see a return on their investment.
03:40If the business is paying for itself...
03:42We need to break even, don't we?
03:44Yeah, if we can break even,
03:45we're both comfortable with that, aren't we?
03:47Yeah.
03:47It's early June
03:52and after serving over 150 people
03:55at their pub's official opening three days ago,
03:58all has now gone quiet.
04:02The launch on Friday was a huge success, wasn't it?
04:06Yeah, it was.
04:06The best part was people were spending money.
04:10Today's Monday.
04:11And a bank holiday.
04:12And a bank holiday,
04:13so we probably will be quiet because we're not doing food.
04:15We have put it out on social media that we're open.
04:18If you want to come in and bring a picnic, feel free.
04:21So far, a couple of locals have popped in for a drink.
04:25What can I get for you?
04:26Uh, Demi, you get us.
04:27Oh, yeah.
04:28Not having their kitchen open for food orders yet
04:31means the other potential customers are heading elsewhere.
04:36On est huit?
04:37Uh...
04:38On manger ce midi?
04:39No, uh, non manger, just, uh...
04:42Ah, boire?
04:43Oui.
04:43Uh, bon, bah, tant pis, alors.
04:45Merci beaucoup.
04:46Désolé.
04:47Merci.
04:48Bonne journée, au revoir.
04:50But this is a shame, you see.
04:51We've got to be ready for it.
04:53Yeah, no, no, we have.
04:54But we've got a couple of weeks to get started.
04:56Being new to the pub trade,
04:58the pair want to find their feet behind the bar
05:01before launching their new menu.
05:03So how much did we say we're going to charge for fish and chips?
05:06Which is still a work in progress.
05:09We'll start small.
05:10We've got to start small.
05:11If we don't start small, we're just going to make a mess of it all.
05:13Yeah, burn out.
05:15People won't come back?
05:15No.
05:16Until they're ready to launch their food service,
05:19their priority is getting more people in for drinks.
05:23I'm just making a little sign with our opening times,
05:26telling people that we're open.
05:28Then we're going to go into the lake and put it up
05:30because it'll be really busy down there today
05:32with all the families being off.
05:33And hopefully, we can drive some business.
05:39But I can't spell that.
05:41Fortunately, Willow and Hugo,
05:43who are settling in well to their new French school,
05:46are on hand to help with translation.
05:48There's no internet upstairs
05:50and I need to know how to spell Wednesday in French.
05:53Unless you know, do you know how to spell Wednesday?
05:54I do know how to spell Wednesday.
05:55Yeah, but how do you spell it?
05:57No, it's Merc.
06:01Merc, ready.
06:03Right, Merc, ready.
06:06Merc, ready.
06:08There we go.
06:10Nowhere around here opens on a Monday.
06:13And we've decided that we will
06:14so that we can have Wednesday off
06:16to be with the kids
06:17because that's important to us.
06:19As Emily holds the fort at the pub,
06:24Dave heads to put the new poster up
06:26at the village's local lake
06:28that's popular with families.
06:31Knowing that we're going to be quiet today,
06:33I think I'd rather be down here myself, to be honest.
06:36I should have brought a staple gun.
06:39This is going badly.
06:42If Em sees this,
06:43she'll be very upset with me
06:44because it's not straight.
06:47There we go.
06:47Hopefully that'll get a couple of people in.
06:51With their future in France at stake,
06:53Dave and Emily desperately need these quiet days
06:56to become a thing of the past.
07:0590 miles to the east
07:07is the little village of Fenier,
07:09which is just a stone's throw
07:11from the lakes of the Milvash Plateau
07:14and the meandering river Creuse
07:16that winds majestically through the landscape.
07:20It's now home to Roy and Nicola,
07:22who've moved here from Devon to run a B&B.
07:25Can't believe how warm it is today.
07:27No, my natural.
07:29Previously, Roy was a pastry chef
07:31and Nicola has experience running a tea room,
07:34but their new life isn't something
07:36they spent years planning or saving for.
07:39Instead, it's a prize they fought to win
07:42in a TV competition.
07:46It hasn't sung in that we've won this.
07:48At least once a day,
07:49one of us say,
07:51we're youngness.
07:51We're youngness.
07:51Can you believe her?
07:53The pair had been picked out of hundreds of applicants
07:56and were pitted against five other couples
07:59across three weeks of challenges.
08:02This has given me
08:04the realisation that we have to have double linen.
08:08There you go.
08:10All in a bid to prove to the judges
08:12that they could be top B&B hosts.
08:14We're behind.
08:17We'll pass a wee bit of time.
08:19We'll not be behind.
08:20There's no rule for error here.
08:22There's no room.
08:24The competition pushed them to their limits
08:26and tested their teamwork.
08:29So theirs are getting cold
08:30while you're faffing round.
08:32Stop stressing, Nicola.
08:33It's over.
08:34Stop.
08:34But after giving it their all,
08:37they were crowned the winners.
08:39You have won a B&B in France.
08:43What the...
08:44What?
08:45I won.
08:46Congratulations.
08:47Oh, we didn't win.
08:48Oh, my God.
08:50I won.
08:51So the moment we won is still a shock to me.
08:56I don't really remember what happened that night.
08:58We're still in cloud nine.
09:00The property they've won
09:01is a stunning French townhouse
09:03at the heart of the village.
09:06Four of its five bedrooms are turnkey
09:08while on the top floor
09:10there's an added bonus of a huge attic
09:12prime for expansion.
09:14And outside, there's a storage barn
09:16and a pretty courtyard.
09:20Nicola and Roy plan to hit the ground running
09:22by opening their prize B&B this season.
09:26There's a million things to do before we open.
09:28We think we're ahead of ourselves
09:29and then we realise that there's so much more to do.
09:32We have things to do every day, all day.
09:34It's now September,
09:38two months after Roy and Nicola
09:40won their life-changing prize.
09:44Today, they're packing up their things
09:46and moving out of their home in Paynton
09:48before catching the ferry to France.
09:50The stuff we're taking with us
09:55is all personal stuff, really.
09:59I didn't downsize any clothes or shoes.
10:03Should I?
10:04Roy did, but I didn't.
10:07With very little time to spare today,
10:10they'll need to lean into their winning teamwork once again.
10:14You haven't told me what's in that box yet
10:15because it's blank.
10:16I haven't numbered it yet.
10:18French customs have to see a list
10:20of what they're transporting,
10:22so they've devised a system for labelling their boxes.
10:26One to five.
10:27Yeah.
10:27The trouble is,
10:28they can't quite agree on what the system is.
10:32No, it's not one to five, though.
10:34One to five is one, two, three, four, five.
10:36I've now got two, three, four and six.
10:40This is going to take longer.
10:41Box one.
10:42When did you put that there?
10:43On there, when you were talking.
10:44You didn't tell me.
10:46But eventually, they figure it all out
10:48and soon the van starts to fill.
10:52We've about 25 to 30 boxes,
10:55plus we're having a range cooker delivered this afternoon,
10:59so the range cooker should go here
11:00and then we'll have to build the rest of the stuff around it.
11:03While most of their belongings
11:05don't need to be handled with care...
11:07I wish you could load everything, I guess.
11:11Nicola does have a collection of special ceramics
11:14that are fragile.
11:16I have plates that I adore
11:17and the cost of fortune
11:19and I used to have them in the tea rooms
11:21and if they get damaged,
11:22I don't know how it'll do.
11:26This must be Nicola's expensive plates.
11:29They are very expensive
11:31and they're heavy.
11:34So, make sure they don't fall off that wall.
11:39With a ferry to catch,
11:41Roy works quickly
11:42to get most of their belongings in the van.
11:45Where's my plates?
11:46On the bottom with everything on top of them.
11:48But they're not, Roy.
11:49No, they're not.
11:50They're not, they're not.
11:52Where actually are they?
11:54There, with the pillows on top.
11:56OK.
11:56OK?
11:57Hmm.
11:59Having packed up and cleaned,
12:01reality hits.
12:04Baby, here's the end of it.
12:07Once we leave today,
12:09the job's gone,
12:10the accommodation's gone.
12:12We're homeless for a day.
12:13We live in a boat for the day.
12:16Yeah, yeah, we're homeless for a day.
12:17And we live in the van
12:17and then,
12:18and yeah,
12:18we'll move on to our new adventure
12:20and our new home.
12:21Our new home.
12:22After battling to win
12:24this life-changing opportunity...
12:26Let's go to France.
12:29Now that the game's over,
12:31can they make their new lives
12:32as B&B hosts a success?
12:34Coming up,
12:40things get heated
12:41as a couple push on
12:42with their Spanish guesthouse renovations.
12:45It's too hot to be doing this sort of work.
12:47I'd rather be on the beach.
12:49And temperatures also rise
12:51for Emily and Dave.
12:52Wow, it's super hot.
12:53As they take a gamble
12:55on a new event
12:56to pull in punters.
12:57I'm just in the process
12:58of making lasagna
13:00for 50 people.
13:01Not really sure
13:03on the quantities.
13:11Making the move
13:13to mainland Europe
13:14after Brexit
13:15can be tough.
13:16But there are still plenty
13:17of people determined
13:18to overcome the hurdles.
13:21There you go.
13:22Like Nigel
13:23and husband Fede,
13:25who moved
13:25to the small mountain village
13:27of Pelopos
13:28after leaving behind
13:29their lives
13:30running a pub in Bath.
13:32Congrats.
13:33Thank you very much.
13:35While Fede
13:36is Spanish-born
13:37and has family roots here,
13:40Britt Nigel
13:40must have a residency permit.
13:43And five months
13:44after buying
13:45a former guesthouse
13:46at the top of the village,
13:47there's good news.
13:50I'm officially a resident.
13:52I'm really happy.
13:53A lot of hard work
13:54Fede's put into it
13:55and, you know,
13:56that's the result.
13:57It takes a lot of pressure off
13:58and we can focus properly
14:00on getting the B&B up
14:01and running.
14:02Cheers.
14:03Cheers.
14:05With their paperwork
14:06now in order,
14:07the pair can crack on
14:08with their ambitious plans
14:09to try to open
14:10their new bed and breakfast
14:11business in October,
14:13while also continuing
14:15to immerse themselves
14:16in village life.
14:17I'm pretty sure
14:21Nigel will learn Spanish.
14:23At the moment,
14:24it's quite limited,
14:25so just greetings.
14:27No, what's the wine?
14:29The wine word?
14:31Vino.
14:31Yeah.
14:31Tinto de verano.
14:33Tinto variano.
14:34De verano.
14:35Tinto vino.
14:36Tinto vino.
14:37Very good.
14:38It's now mid-June
14:42and after difficulties
14:44plumbing in
14:45a new guest en suite,
14:46Nigel and Fede
14:47have been given permission
14:49from the town council
14:50to dig up the road
14:51outside their property
14:53as they need to create
14:54a new connection
14:55to the main sewerage pipe.
14:57I'm just going to flick it
14:58so it makes a line
15:00on the floor.
15:01To keep costs down,
15:03the couple are doing
15:04most of the work themselves,
15:05with some help from neighbour
15:07and local builder, Brian.
15:09We're just marking out
15:10the mapping of the floor
15:11to where we're going to dig up
15:13and so this just gives us
15:14an outline that we can follow.
15:17Although they've received
15:18some guidance from the authorities
15:20about where to locate
15:21the outlets for water and waste,
15:24finding their exact location
15:26still involves an element
15:27of guesswork.
15:29I think the waste pipe
15:31is coming down here somewhere.
15:33The main water is there.
15:34Before they start digging,
15:37they need to turn off
15:38the water supply to the house.
15:40There's one against the wall,
15:41there's one against this wall.
15:44But as their background
15:45is in running pubs,
15:47they're more used to bar taps
15:49than stop taps.
15:51It seems there's still
15:52water pressure in the street,
15:54so...
15:55And Brian's power drill
15:59is proving no match
16:00for this old concrete road.
16:02This piece is thicker
16:04than anticipated.
16:06With renovation work
16:08inside the property
16:09currently on hold,
16:10pressure to fix
16:11their plumbing problems
16:12is rising,
16:14as are the Spanish
16:15summer temperatures.
16:21I'm sitting down,
16:22I'm on a five-minute break
16:23and watching Brian.
16:27It's too up to be doing
16:28this sort of work.
16:28I'd rather be on the beach.
16:31After fruitlessly chipping away
16:33for most of the morning
16:34and no sign of the waste pipe,
16:36it's time for plan B.
16:40Brian's brought out his digger.
16:43It's a slightly bigger hole
16:44than we expected,
16:45but hey,
16:46it seems to be taken
16:47out the whole driveway.
16:50Bringing in the big guns
16:51is a messy affair.
16:55Looks like we've just
16:56had an earthquake.
16:58But they're feeling hopeful
16:59it will speed things up.
17:05Two days later,
17:07Brian is back on site
17:08and the hunt continues.
17:09I hope,
17:11I hope,
17:12it's after work I go.
17:14But as there's no X
17:16to mark the spot,
17:17It's a stone.
17:20There's no way of knowing
17:21if their freshly dug trench
17:23ends at the existing pipes.
17:26But finally,
17:28success!
17:29There's water.
17:31He's only gone and done it.
17:33We found water
17:33and bust the pipe.
17:35Would you believe?
17:36There it is.
17:40There's the water pipe.
17:42It's only a thin one.
17:43Tiny!
17:44They might not have
17:46struck gold,
17:47but when it comes to
17:48keeping the renovations
17:49on track,
17:50this find is
17:51almost as valuable.
17:52Now we've just got to
17:53find the sewage pipe.
18:02Across in southwest France,
18:04it's now late June.
18:06Wow.
18:07It's super hot.
18:09While advertising locally
18:11and on social media
18:12has resulted in
18:14some extra trade,
18:15Emily and Dave's pub
18:17is still quieter
18:18than they'd like it to be.
18:20So today,
18:20as well as being open
18:21for drinks as usual,
18:23they're also preparing
18:24to serve a special
18:25evening meal service
18:26complete with live music.
18:28I'm just in the process
18:32of making lasagna
18:33for somewhere in the region
18:34of 50 people.
18:37Not really sure
18:39on the quantities.
18:40I'm hoping that I'm over
18:41rather than being under.
18:44But as Em says,
18:45I am a bit of a feeder
18:46to be honest,
18:47so I'm sure I have
18:48overcatered.
18:50I'm just so scared
18:51of not serving people
18:52enough food.
18:53As the pair
18:56are still not quite ready
18:57to launch a full menu,
18:59they hope their offering
19:00of lasagna
19:00followed by
19:01a chocolate fondant dessert
19:03served across
19:04two evening sittings
19:06will give them
19:06an opportunity
19:07to get some practice in.
19:09We're actually
19:10overbooked.
19:11We said that we were
19:12going to cap it at 40
19:13as it's our first
19:15paid catered event
19:17and we've pushed it
19:19to 43
19:19plus the singer
19:20and his team
19:21is 46.
19:23Hopefully I'll get
19:24to eat at some stage
19:25so that's a lasagna
19:27for 50 people.
19:30Choosing today
19:31to trial a meal service
19:32is a deliberate choice
19:34as it's a big date
19:36in the French
19:36cultural calendar.
19:37Today all across
19:39France it's an event
19:40called Fête de la Musée,
19:43a celebration
19:43of music basically
19:44so lots of places
19:47around have got
19:48various acts
19:49on tonight.
19:50The towns
19:51have got things
19:53happening as well
19:54so I do feel
19:55quite fortunate
19:56that 45 of those
19:57people have decided
19:58to come and dine
19:58with us.
20:00The two-course
20:01set meal will cost
20:0220 euros per head
20:04and they hope
20:05plenty of drink sales
20:06will boost
20:07their profits
20:07to cover the cost
20:08of hiring
20:09their own musician.
20:12Tonight we've got
20:12some live music
20:13about three,
20:14four hours worth
20:15of singing.
20:16I'm not very excited
20:17about tonight yet
20:18because our friend
20:20who's supposed
20:20to be helping me
20:21is actually quite poorly
20:22so I don't know
20:23if I'm going to be
20:23on my own.
20:24Hopefully she'll feel
20:25better but if it's just me
20:27I don't know how
20:27I'm going to run
20:28the bar and get
20:29the food out
20:29to 45 people
20:31on time
20:31full of stress.
20:33As the clock ticks
20:35towards 3pm
20:36there's still no news
20:37from Emily's friend
20:38and the couple
20:39are starting to
20:40consider whether
20:41they may need
20:42to hire some waiting
20:43staff moving forward.
20:44Once the tourists
20:47start arriving
20:48I just think
20:48it's going to be
20:49flat out then
20:49until the end
20:49of August
20:50isn't it?
20:50Yeah I think
20:51we'll probably
20:51need some help
20:52out front
20:52I don't think
20:53I'll be able
20:53to do it all.
20:54No.
20:54Reach out for
20:55somebody part time
20:56maybe and get us
20:58through it.
21:00Musician Chris
21:00has just arrived
21:01to get set up
21:02and the scorching
21:04French summer
21:05temperatures
21:05means he's also
21:07feeling the pressure
21:08to deliver.
21:09I hope I'll still
21:10be standing
21:11after four hours.
21:14It's going to be
21:14a bit hot for everyone
21:15to start dancing
21:16too early so
21:17I'll probably keep
21:18it quiet for the
21:19first two hours
21:20and then ramp it up
21:21when it gets dark.
21:23Back in the kitchen
21:24with the lasagnas
21:25cooking Dave moves
21:27on to 90 pieces
21:28of garlic bread.
21:30I might be able
21:31to get out
21:32and hear a song
21:33or two
21:34because the last
21:35concert that we
21:36had on that
21:37didn't happen
21:37because I was
21:39just too busy
21:39inside so I didn't
21:40actually hear
21:41any of the music
21:41so I couldn't tell
21:42you whether it was
21:43good, bad or
21:44indifferent.
21:46We just need
21:46a steady flow
21:47through the bar.
21:48The last thing
21:49I want is
21:49Em getting
21:50overwhelmed
21:50and feeling
21:51like she's
21:52not got any
21:52support from me
21:53because I'm
21:54just in the
21:54kitchen.
21:56Is he cooking
21:57then?
21:58He is.
21:58It's just awful
21:59isn't it?
22:00It's got to be
22:00hot in there.
22:01Yeah it is.
22:02He's got a fan
22:02on him but
22:03he's nearly done
22:04now.
22:06In hindsight
22:06I think we
22:07probably should
22:08have just said
22:08we're going to
22:09open on the
22:09evening for the
22:10concert so that
22:10we had the
22:11full day of us
22:12both being able
22:13to prepare the
22:13food together
22:14rather than me
22:15having to man the
22:15bar whilst Dave's
22:16in there on his
22:17own working
22:17twice as hard.
22:18But we have
22:19had a couple of
22:19people in so
22:20and the regulars
22:21that we like
22:22so it's worth it.
22:23The first sitting
22:26we've got 23
22:27they'll all be on
22:28that side because
22:29the sun stays on
22:30the terrace at
22:30this side quite
22:31late and then
22:32the 8.30 sitting
22:33will be on this
22:34side when the
22:34sun's dropped
22:35down.
22:36With no sign yet
22:38of extra help
22:39front of house
22:39and their first
22:40guests due to
22:41arrive in an
22:42hour.
22:44Dave can I just
22:45go and freshen up
22:46or not?
22:46Yeah.
22:47There's no
22:47turning back.
22:49I was trying to
22:50stop everything
22:50blowing away at
22:51them, wasn't it?
22:52So can Emily
22:54and Dave pull
22:55together to make
22:55their first paid
22:56meal service a
22:57success?
23:02Coming up...
23:04Oh!
23:05That was a bit
23:05bright.
23:06Roy and Nicola
23:07explore their
23:08prize B&B.
23:10Our wine cellar.
23:11We're going to
23:11store all the wine.
23:12Are the naughty
23:13guests?
23:13And Nigel and
23:16Fede spot some
23:17fresh inspiration
23:18for their
23:19renovations.
23:20You can see
23:21the photo.
23:22Here is our
23:23house.
23:24When it was
23:25white.
23:26So that's the
23:27colour we are
23:28trying to get
23:28to.
23:38In the little
23:39village of
23:39Fenier, TV
23:41show winners
23:41Roy and
23:42Nicola have
23:43just arrived
23:43at their
23:44prize B&B
23:45with their
23:45possessions.
23:48It's a moment
23:49they'll remember
23:50for the rest
23:50of their lives.
23:52Let us go.
23:53I hope it's
23:54this one.
23:55I hope it's
23:56one of them.
23:57If Roy can
23:58find the right
23:59key.
24:00It's always
24:00the last one.
24:04During the
24:06competition,
24:07the couple
24:07ran the house
24:08as a bed and
24:09breakfast for
24:09just 24 hours.
24:11One, three.
24:12Oh, it seems
24:14bigger than what
24:15it was before.
24:15It seems bigger
24:16doesn't it?
24:17So they didn't
24:18have long to get
24:19to know the
24:19place.
24:20Here, I don't
24:21remember this.
24:23What's this?
24:24That's
24:25Wheatley.
24:26That is old,
24:27isn't it?
24:28It's beautiful.
24:29It's gorgeous.
24:29This is the
24:32first time
24:32they've been
24:33back since
24:33they won
24:34a couple
24:34of months
24:35ago.
24:37Do you
24:37think it's
24:38real?
24:38Oh, God, yeah.
24:39I don't.
24:39I just still feel
24:40like we're in
24:41someone else's
24:41house.
24:42This is not
24:42an everyday
24:43occurrence where
24:44you get a
24:44house handed
24:45to you.
24:46To me, this
24:46is just...
24:47Someone's going
24:48to come along
24:48in a minute and
24:49say you need
24:49to leave because
24:50you're intruding.
24:51I can actually
24:52get butterflies
24:53driving into
24:54the town.
24:54I can't
24:55wait to see
24:55the rest of
24:55the house.
24:56I can't.
24:56While they
24:59might be the
24:59new owners,
25:00they still
25:01have plenty
25:01to discover.
25:03Where's the
25:04lights, love?
25:04Can you
25:05remember?
25:05No idea.
25:07Oh, over
25:08there beside the...
25:09What's this?
25:09Oh.
25:10No.
25:11Here.
25:12Oh.
25:13Hey.
25:14Do you remember
25:15what's in here?
25:17The latch.
25:18I remember that.
25:21Wow.
25:22I wonder if this
25:22closes behind you.
25:24Our wine cellar.
25:25We're going to
25:25store all the
25:26wine.
25:27Or the naughty
25:28guests.
25:30Most of the
25:31bedrooms have
25:32already been
25:32decorated and
25:34just need bed
25:34linen and
25:35pillows before
25:36the couple can
25:36open up for
25:37business.
25:39Ah.
25:41Now you're
25:42talking.
25:43While upstairs
25:44there's the
25:45bonus prize of
25:46a huge attic
25:47offering bags
25:48of potential
25:49for their
25:49future in
25:50France.
25:51Why, come
25:52on, I'll
25:53save you from
25:53the spiders.
25:54So this is
25:55a games room
25:56then, is there
25:57light?
26:00I'm not scared
26:01though, you're the
26:01one that's
26:01chicken.
26:03Pull table
26:03here.
26:05Yeah?
26:05Yeah, definitely.
26:07TV there
26:08with a sofa.
26:09Oh my God, look at
26:10the spider's webs.
26:11There's nobody been up
26:12here in a way.
26:12I've got to work
26:13that out in here.
26:14Really?
26:16Well, everywhere
26:16else is pretty
26:17much fine.
26:17It's a turnkey.
26:18It's a turnkey
26:19downstairs.
26:19Yeah, but for
26:20what we want up
26:21here, we've got
26:22work to do.
26:24Hang on, where's
26:25my torch?
26:26Nicola and Roy
26:27will finalise their
26:28plans over the next
26:29few weeks.
26:31But for now,
26:32there's still a van
26:33parked outside,
26:34waiting to be
26:35unloaded.
26:36While most of
26:40the boxes are
26:41light enough for
26:42the couple to
26:42carry on their
26:43own, the oven
26:44they've brought
26:44from the UK is
26:46a problem.
26:47Whose idea?
26:48Was it about a
26:49six-range cooker?
26:51Huh?
26:52But after taking
26:53part in the
26:54competition, the
26:55pair are no
26:56strangers to
26:56thinking on their
26:57feet, and Roy
26:58soon spots a
26:59possible solution
27:00on the neighbour's
27:01roof.
27:04Roy's found a
27:05couple of
27:05guys in the
27:06building site,
27:07going on the
27:07road to help
27:08lift the cooker
27:08off.
27:09I can lift it,
27:09but I don't lift
27:10it from the
27:10van down.
27:12Yeah.
27:17And a step.
27:19And another
27:20step.
27:27Merci.
27:29Oh, thank you.
27:29Get yourself a
27:30drink.
27:31Merci.
27:32Merci.
27:33Merci.
27:34I love the
27:36French.
27:36I tell you
27:37what, my
27:38French is
27:38improving.
27:39I went,
27:39bonjour, do
27:40you speak
27:41English?
27:43Now that the
27:46cooker is safely
27:47over the
27:48threshold, there
27:49is one more
27:50vital job to do
27:51before the
27:52couple can
27:52settle down for
27:53the night.
27:54Here, catch.
27:55Goody-door.
27:56They need to
27:57check that
27:58Nicola's most
27:59prized possessions
28:00have survived the
28:01journey.
28:01They're not
28:02everyone's cup of
28:03tea, but they're
28:04mine and I love
28:04them.
28:05With the news
28:06that all the
28:07crockery is intact,
28:09Roy and Nicola's
28:10first day in France
28:11couldn't have gone
28:12much better.
28:13It's all good.
28:14And it's been a
28:15promising start to
28:16their new venture.
28:18It's beyond our
28:19dreams of what we
28:20could ever possibly
28:21have.
28:21In Pelopos in
28:29southern Spain, it's
28:31more of a bumpy
28:32start to life as
28:33B&B hosts for
28:34Nigel and Fede.
28:36There's just no
28:37sign of it, is
28:37there?
28:38No.
28:39Well, it makes me
28:39wonder whether it's
28:40in the next one.
28:41As their hunt for
28:42the waste pipe
28:43connecting their
28:44property to the
28:44village's main
28:45sewage system
28:46continues.
28:48It's a case that
28:49we need to find
28:49this pipe, not
28:50that we want to.
28:51If this is what
28:52digging gold's
28:53like, blind me.
28:54It's a setback
28:55they could do
28:56without, especially
28:57as they've started
28:58to get inquiries
28:59to book their
29:00B&B.
29:01So they need to
29:02find a solution
29:03and fast.
29:06Can you ring the
29:07water board and
29:07tell them that
29:08we've dug up
29:09where they told
29:09us to?
29:10We've only come
29:11across the water
29:12in pipe, not
29:13the sewage pipe.
29:15We don't want to
29:15go digging any
29:16further, because
29:17we could be
29:18digging down to
29:19the end of the
29:20drive.
29:20While
29:21Spanish-speaking
29:22Fede phones
29:23for help.
29:30Nigel and
29:31Brian do the
29:32spade work.
29:34And an hour
29:35later, after
29:36further information
29:37from the water
29:37board and
29:38almost two days
29:39of digging,
29:40they finally
29:41strike gold.
29:42There it is.
29:44It's there.
29:46Or so they
29:47thought.
29:48It goes the
29:48wrong way.
29:50We found it at
29:51long last, but
29:52instead of coming
29:53out and down
29:54where it's meant
29:54to, it's coming
29:55straight down to
29:56the drain down
29:57the bottom.
29:58Which has a
29:59knock-on effect as
30:01they try to lay
30:01the new pipe work.
30:03That's just
30:05right?
30:06No, it's not.
30:07We're short by
30:08probably half a
30:10metre.
30:10We measured it to
30:11here, where I'm
30:12stood, but
30:13unfortunately we've
30:14had to dig out
30:14more, so we're a
30:15little short on
30:16pipe.
30:17At over 100
30:18euros apiece, new
30:20piping doesn't come
30:21cheap, so Nigel and
30:23builder Brian need to
30:24work out a plan to
30:25minimise costs.
30:26I'm meant to be the
30:28foreman and watch
30:29over everything, not
30:30be involved.
30:32Grab a hold of it.
30:38To help bolster their
30:39renovation budget,
30:41Fede's begun a new
30:42part-time job, a
30:44cleaning role at the
30:45village school.
30:46At the moment there
30:47are four kids in the
30:48village.
30:48Unfortunately not
30:49enough for opening
30:50daily.
30:51They just use it from
30:52time to time to teach
30:53the elderly and doing
30:55community training.
30:56courses.
30:58It looks more like a
30:59museum of the
31:01education of the
31:02last decades.
31:03Fede was last here
31:04over 20 years ago,
31:06when he attended a
31:07craft workshop.
31:10I remember being here
31:11when I was maybe
31:1214, 13 years old,
31:16but just for one day,
31:17but it had such an
31:19impact to be socialising
31:21with the kids of the
31:23village.
31:23I still remember just
31:24only one day that I
31:26had here.
31:27This place still plays an
31:29important part in the
31:30life of the village,
31:32offering courses for
31:33adults and it's about to
31:34have a new student.
31:37Nigel will be here at some
31:38point this month learning
31:39Spanish.
31:40Hopefully he will be well
31:42behaved, but I think we all
31:43doubt it.
31:46With the school's spick and
31:47span, it's time for Fede to
31:49move on to his next cleaning
31:51job.
31:52This building is home to the
31:54local council and the
31:55village doctor.
31:56So this is where my
31:58granddad used to work on.
32:01He was the doctor of the
32:02village.
32:03It is nice to be back and be
32:06part of the history as well of
32:08the village.
32:09The mayor's office contains
32:11another snapshot of times gone
32:12by.
32:14You can see the photo of the
32:17whole village and here is our
32:20house.
32:22When it was white, so that's the
32:24colour we are trying to get to.
32:26While the pair are drowning in
32:30plumbing problems, restoring
32:31their property back to its former
32:33glory feels like a pipe dream.
32:36But back at the top of the
32:38village, Nigel's doing all he can
32:40to help them get back on track.
32:43The downpipe's coming down the
32:45side of the building to here and
32:47then put the manhole a bit further
32:50down, which then will hopefully
32:52let the sewage pipe go to where
32:54it's needed.
32:54So we won't hopefully have to
32:57purchase anything else apart from
32:59another manhole cover.
33:01I'm going to cut it all out here
33:02now, this whole pipe, clean it
33:04all out, square it off and then
33:06tomorrow I'll put a concrete base
33:09in it, brick it up, put the pipes
33:11in and the job will be good.
33:14Relying on Brian's expertise,
33:17Nigel and Fede hope that after a
33:19tough couple of weeks, they can
33:21soon put their plumbing issues
33:22behind them.
33:24Coming up...
33:27You OK, Em?
33:29Not really.
33:30With their pub kitchen open, the
33:32pressure ramps up for Dave and
33:34Emily.
33:35It's a little bit stressy right now
33:36because I can't physically do this on
33:38my own.
33:39While in Spain...
33:40Are you all right?
33:41You're leaning.
33:42Things are also nerve-wracking for
33:44Nigel and Fede.
33:45The wind's picking up, so I want to
33:47make sure it's secure before we go up
33:49there.
33:50Cool.
33:51In the rural village of Santestef, it's a big day at Dave and Emily's new pub.
34:07A ticket.
34:08A ticket.
34:09As their first paid dinner service is starting soon.
34:13Merci beaucoup.
34:14While Dave has some help from the pub's former kitchen assistant, Veronique, who they've
34:19recently rehired...
34:20Four.
34:21Yep.
34:22Sell it.
34:24Emily's friend has confirmed she definitely isn't well enough to help front of house, so
34:29nerves are creeping in.
34:31It's a little bit stressy right now because I can't physically do this on my own.
34:38So...
34:39God knows what I'm going to do.
34:43Hmm.
34:44Desperate for the evening to go well, they've no choice but to draft in some emergency help.
34:50OK.
34:51Seven.
34:52It's 80, 70.
34:53Uh-huh.
34:54OK.
34:55OK, thanks.
34:56It's good.
34:57Local student Tim, who has previous waiting experience, has come to their rescue.
35:03Veronique's here.
35:04She's been doing lots of work.
35:06Um, Tim's come along to help us, um, with, you know, if the bar gets really busy then we
35:13could still be under pressure.
35:14But definitely don't drop any plates because we haven't got enough lasagna.
35:18OK, we've just got the good amount.
35:21Ready?
35:22Yeah.
35:23C'est bon?
35:24Oui.
35:25Everybody's ready.
35:26Emma, are you ready?
35:27No.
35:28OK.
35:29Ready or not, their beer garden is filling up, keeping Emily busy on the bar...
35:36This one's slightly sweeter, that one, yeah.
35:40...and it's soon time for Dave and Veronique...
35:43Two more, are we?
35:44...to dish up the first 23 portions of lasagna.
35:48This one, apri, is for the singer.
35:52This one, vegetarian.
35:54Vegetarian, OK?
35:56Vegetarian, OK?
35:57With Tim's help, their diners begin to tuck in.
36:01Dave's bumper-sized portions going down a treat.
36:05Sanya, salad, garlic bread.
36:08Absolutely delicious.
36:10Has everybody got the food?
36:13Have you served Chris?
36:14Yeah, they've had it, yeah.
36:16They've done that.
36:17We couldn't do it without Tim.
36:21It was full on for about ten minutes there, but Tim's just been back and forth serving all the food,
36:27so I was just doing the money and the drinks, so...
36:30We've just got one table of six left at seven, and then we're done,
36:34and then we can work on the half past eight.
36:36Oh, so far, so good.
36:38So far, so good.
36:39So far, so good.
36:41Their first sitting couldn't have gone better.
36:47But as their second set of diners begin to arrive...
36:51I'll take one of each.
36:52One of each?
36:53Yeah.
36:54Emily is soon swamped.
36:56Yeah, I can help you bring that.
36:59Are you okay, hon?
37:00Not really.
37:01Leaving Dave no choice but to jump behind the bar.
37:05Sort of these two drinks.
37:07Okay.
37:08And I'll buy some sparkling water.
37:10Okay.
37:11Just two glasses of grenadine and water then, please.
37:14Okay.
37:15But he can't afford to be too long, as he's needed back in the kitchen
37:19to keep their second food service on track.
37:22It's okay if we come back.
37:25Yeah.
37:26The plates?
37:27Yes.
37:28Wee, wee, wee, wee.
37:29Okay.
37:30I feel like Tim might be feeling under pressure a little bit now.
37:34While it may have been a little heated in the kitchen and behind the bar...
37:39Sweating buckets.
37:40Every plate is eventually delivered without a hitch.
37:44And their guests can dine to the sound of musician Chris.
37:49Everybody seems happy.
37:50Everybody's fed.
37:51The bar's not under as much stress now.
37:53Tim's doing an amazing job.
37:55Veronica's doing an amazing job.
37:56We can get everything cleared back and just look after people for the rest of the night then, fingers crossed.
38:01We'll see.
38:02I might have spoken too soon.
38:04Having faced an empty beer garden just two weeks ago, their efforts to advertise the pub and get their kitchen open are beginning to pay off.
38:13Ten euros.
38:14Merci.
38:15We've had a good night.
38:16It's been a lot of fun.
38:17It has.
38:18Food's been fab.
38:19It's lovely.
38:20Really lovely people.
38:21Lovely atmosphere.
38:22It's been great.
38:23Tonight there was a lovely dinner.
38:24The first time they had dinner over here.
38:25One of the first, but I think many will follow.
38:26I am proud of us.
38:27We look keen and we deal with it, don't we?
38:28It's been a massive success.
38:29I think so, yeah.
38:30I mean, you know, we're only not even a month in and thus far the business is paying for itself,
38:49isn't it?
38:50It's covering its bills.
38:51I'm pretty optimistic actually.
38:54Yeah, it's definitely time to have a drink.
38:56Yeah.
39:06850 miles away in Pelopos, things are also moving forward for Nigel and Fede because at long last they can put their plumbing problems behind them.
39:17The road is finished.
39:19The new en suite is finally connected to the main sewage. The water board were happy and it's all back to normal and it's all hunky-dory.
39:26Hiring builder Brian to complete the extra works has dented their renovation budget. But as DIY novices there was no other way forward.
39:36Now that all the groundwork is finished and isn't going to be dusty from now onwards, so we can now continue with the project.
39:45As September rolls around, the pair have been working hard to try and make up for lost time on their B&B renovations.
39:55This is the fourth bedroom. Not sure where I got the colour scheme from. Looks a bit like a well-known airline.
40:04They've now managed to refurbish four out of their five guest rooms, including the old first floor living room.
40:11Coming to my boudoir.
40:13Which is now a furnished guest bedroom with a fully functional en suite.
40:20We've been given the furniture, updated it with paint and we've made a coffee station in there.
40:28While they're making progress, there are still parts of the B&B that remain untouched as the pair face another unexpected setback.
40:38August has been a difficult month for us. A dear friend of ours has been seriously ill in hospital and I've had to return to the UK to support them.
40:50It's one of those things that you need to down tools for your friends and family when they need you.
40:56Things are more positive back in England, which makes it easier to return and get cracking and getting the house back on track.
41:03The time away from the B&B has, however, forced them to make a difficult decision about the booking they had penciled for next month.
41:12Due to the delays over the summer period, we've cancelled the guests for the beginning of October because we don't think we'll be ready
41:20and we're just playing it safe to make sure that we don't let them down at the last minute.
41:25While it's disappointing to let the booking go, now that Nigel's back in Spain, the pair are determined to push on and today they're tackling the job at the top of Fede's wishlist.
41:37You dropped your sponge, that was a wet one.
41:46With the picture adorning the wall of the mayor's office still fresh in their mind and with the help of Brian and friend John, they're giving the B&B's exterior a glow up.
41:56Cup of tea time.
41:58Cup of tea, love.
41:59It's making already a big difference because everybody in the village is passing positive comments on how bright and beautiful it looks.
42:08But a property this size can put even the most skilled workers through their paces.
42:17We've finished painting the centre of the house so we're just going to now dismantle some of the scaffolding to get it past the electric wire that drops in front of the house.
42:26Because we're dismantling the top of it, there's no support there now so we've got to be really careful that it doesn't fall down.
42:36And as time is of the essence...
42:39Are you alright?
42:40You're leaning.
42:41You're well leaning.
42:42..they opt for a shortcut not found in any scaffolders manual.
42:47Take that leg off.
42:48Fry.
42:51Needs to go your way.
42:52Yeah.
42:55Ready?
42:56Yeah.
42:57Can we get another break?
42:58Yeah.
42:59And time isn't their only challenge.
43:01The change in the seasons and the property's location at the very top of the village means they're also exposed to the elements.
43:10The wind's picking up so I want to make sure it's secure before we go up there.
43:15Cool.
43:18Fortunately, Nigel and Fede can lean into the expertise of Brian and John.
43:24And only once they've secured and checked that the scaffolding tower is safe can work resume.
43:31Oh, I knew I'd do that.
43:33All down the wall.
43:35But with less of a head for heights, Nigel's keeping his feet firmly on the terrace.
43:41This edge is too dangerous to use for a ladder.
43:44So I'm having to lean over the wall, which is manageable.
43:48Just not ideal, but needs must.
43:52I think whichever way we do it, it's a bit precarious.
43:56It's been a challenging summer for Nigel and Fede's renovations, but they're not giving up on their dream and continue to give it their all to get their B&B open as soon as possible.
44:08Next time...
44:14Bonjour!
44:16Nicola and Roy feel the heat as they welcome their first guests.
44:20Did that pad catch?
44:22Yeah. I forgot the turn door.
44:25Temperatures are also raised...
44:27Martin, I think I've got a problem.
44:29...as Emily and Dave host a summer party at their pub.
44:31Maybe some people will eat, maybe everybody will eat, maybe not.
44:35And in Spain, Nigel and Fede switch from renovating to hosting.
44:40We're 20 minutes past the time I said breakfast would be and we're still waiting for guests.
44:45I don't get as stressed as him. I am like the balance.
44:47I am like the balance.
44:48I am like the balance.
44:49It's my pleasure.
44:53Everybody will see us.
44:55I am 8 o.
44:58I am 18,000.
45:00Put it in it.
45:01Good luck.
45:04Good luck.
45:06Cube count, catfish,
45:14And we are younger than we're still we're still we'll be full of fun.
