00:00Hello everybody, it is Thursday the 8th of January.
00:29The Countdown is back for another winter warmer, so let's get everybody in from the cold.
00:34Our lexicographer ready to go, Susie Dent, the brilliant Debbie McGee joins us from the magic circle.
00:41And in a circle, over there of course, is our Rachel Riley.
00:45And today's World Typing Day, it's all about digital literacy and reminding people about typing.
00:51Do you not remember it wasn't that long ago?
00:53We were worried that people were typing and not writing.
00:56Now we're worried that people aren't even bothering doing that.
00:59Does this worry you, Susie? Because I think you're our gauge for this.
01:03If you're not worried, Rachel and I are not worried.
01:05Well, first thing to say is we always worry about new technology and its impact upon language.
01:10And usually our fears are unfounded.
01:12I do worry a little bit about losing literacy.
01:15But we are, you know, we've entered a new stage where we're speaking with our fingers anyway.
01:19So it will be interesting, objectively, to see where it goes.
01:22What about you, Debs? Do you do the voice messages?
01:24I do voice texting.
01:26Yes.
01:27But my family laugh at me all the time because mostly I don't read them back and they come up with strange things.
01:35But I still write because I do calligraphy.
01:39Oh, nice.
01:39So I will still write thank you notes or, you know, birthday cards.
01:43And I love writing.
01:45I'll check the post over the weekend.
01:46Oh, yeah.
01:47Let me get one from Debbie McGee.
01:48I didn't say I wasn't at all worried.
01:51I think it will be interesting to see where it goes.
01:52Yeah, we urge you.
01:53We urge you.
01:54Miguel is here hoping to become an octo-champ today.
01:59Our first of Series 93 in our first week.
02:02Because if you didn't catch it before Christmas, Miguel won the last four episodes before we brought back our best eight to crown a new champion.
02:10So this would be remarkable to get off to this kind of start.
02:13Miguel, I mean, just so cool in terms of how you're approaching it.
02:16So even-handed.
02:18Yeah, I think the way I would say the word I use is strategic.
02:22Yeah.
02:22For me, I have to play to where I feel my strengths are.
02:28And so I try to just narrow the space that I have to function by picking letters and numbers in the way that I can control some of the variables.
02:36It's like machine-like at times.
02:37We love it, but always with a smile, right?
02:39So Miguel's taking on Kev Strain.
02:42Just what a brilliant name.
02:44The nickname's already there if he becomes an octo-champ.
02:47It's brilliant.
02:47Lives in the New Forest.
02:48How you doing, mate?
02:49I'm good, thank you.
02:50Are you going to rock us today, eh?
02:53Hopefully.
02:54Yeah?
02:54Hopefully.
02:55Send us all gaga?
02:57Listen, he's a huge Queen fan, but this is the key.
03:01You were at Nebworth.
03:02100,000 people in the palm of Freddie's hand.
03:08What was it like?
03:09It was special.
03:10Very special.
03:11The added fact that status quo were also on the bill.
03:14Yes.
03:15Yeah, it was magic.
03:16Well, listen, thank you for being here.
03:18Kev taking on Miguel.
03:20We'll either hand out a teapot or we'll crown our first octo-champ.
03:24Can't wait.
03:24Let's do it.
03:28Once more, Miguel.
03:29Let's go.
03:30OK, hi.
03:30Good afternoon, Rachel.
03:31Afternoon, Miguel.
03:32OK, can I have a consonant, please?

03:52At home and in the studio, let's play Koday.
04:25Time's up, Miguel.
04:26How many?
04:27Seven.
04:28And Kev?
04:28Seven.
04:29Yes.
04:30I think it might be the same word, Miguel.
04:32Reclaim.
04:32Yes, Kev.
04:33No, miracle.
04:34Oh, yes.
04:36Fantastic.
04:37Very nice.
04:37Yeah.
04:38Oh, where are you from, you sexy thing?
04:41Miracle and reclaim, two great sevens to start off today.
04:45Yes, very good.
04:45We just had more sevens.
04:47We did, yeah.
04:47Caramel, but it was another seven.
04:49Lovely, lovely.

05:55Kev?
05:56Only five.
05:57Yeah, Miguel?
05:58Five as well.
05:59Yeah.
06:00What have you got?
06:01A thump.
06:02Thump?
06:03And I have a mouth.
06:04A mouth?
06:05Yes.
06:06Yeah.
06:07Measly this was.
06:08Mm-hmm.
06:09Can we go above fives?
06:10Yes.
06:11Turn from geometry will give us a seven in apothem.
06:14And then apothem is a line from the centre of a regular polygon at right angles to any
06:18of its sides.
06:19OK.
06:2012.8 numbers for the first time today, Miguel Barker.
06:23OK, Richard, can I have four large, please?
06:25Your favourite.
06:26Thank you, Miguel.
06:27Four from the top and two little.
06:29Let's see if we can use any of your tricks on this one.
06:31The small numbers, five and nine.
06:33And the big four, 75, 25, 100.
06:37And doing the honours, 50.
06:39And the first target, 572.
06:41572.
06:42Numbers up.
06:43All right.
06:44Let's see if we can use cola Fair's rum.
06:45You gonna do that again.
06:46Good.
06:47Till the top and two little line.
06:48You wanna be right in setback.
06:49Now, before I give it a show, the willkommen.
06:50I take two o'clock with me, go ahead, pay me some more.
06:57iencia colour única.
06:585-7-2, Miguel.
07:185-7-3.
07:19One away, Kev.
07:215-7-5.
07:225-7-5, good effort, three away, but seven points, Miguel,
07:26if you are one away.
07:26So I go 5 times 100.
07:29500.
07:31Add 75.
07:325-7-5.
07:33Then 50 divided by 25.
07:35Is 2.
07:36And take that out.
07:37And that gets you one away and seven points.
07:39OK, then 5-7-2, Rachel.
07:43Attack from the top.
07:449 times 75 is 6-7-5, and then it's downhill from here.
07:49Take away 100.
07:5150 over 25 is again 2.
07:54Take that away from the 5-4-3.
07:56And take that off for 5-7-2.
07:58Nice one.
08:01Right, OK, let's get our first tea time teaser of this Thursday winter's afternoon.
08:06And it serves Len.
08:09Serves Len.
08:10It serves Len well to be completely confident.
08:13It serves Len well to be completely confident.
08:16Welcome back, everyone.
08:33It was nerveless for our first tea time teaser.
08:36Not going to use that to describe Miguel or Kev right now.
08:39That wouldn't be natural, would it?
08:41Kev, let's get more letters.
08:42Consonant, please, Rachel.
08:44Thank you, Kev.
08:45N.
08:46Another consonant.
08:48D.
08:49A vowel.
08:50O.
08:52Another consonant.
08:54B.

09:1230 seconds.
09:12E.
09:21E.
09:32E.
09:35E.
09:36E.
09:36E.
09:37E.
09:38E.
09:38Give me a number, Kev.
09:44Seven. Yeah, Miguel.
09:46I'm going to try a nine.
09:48He's going to try a maximum.
09:50That'll give him 18 points. Kev.
09:52Loading, Ellie.
09:54Yes, loading. We will be doing that.
09:56If Miguel's got a maximum here, Kev, even you and I will applaud.
09:59Here we go. Trying, uploading.
10:01Yes, and you were right to try it.
10:03Yes!
10:05Are you going to add anything else?
10:07Nothing.
10:08All right, let's move on to more letters.
10:10See what they bring.
10:11Miguel.
10:12OK, Rachel, can I have a consonant, please?
10:14Thank you, Miguel.
10:15S.
10:16And another.
10:17Y.
10:18And another.
10:19L.
10:20And another.

10:48T.
10:49T.
10:50Me.
10:51T.
10:52T.
10:53T.
10:54T.
10:55T.
10:56T.
11:01T.
11:02T.
11:03Miguel? Eight. And Kev? I'll try an eight. Excellent. Miguel? Resolute. And Kev? Outliers with a Y.
11:14Outliers. My fingers crossed for you here. Oh, it's not fair, I'm afraid. I'm sorry, Kev.
11:20What do we have in the dextry corner? We have one more, didn't we? Yes, we have Euro style.
11:25Sounds like it means European, but actually it's without the E at the beginning. So it's U-R-O-S-T-Y-L-E.
11:31It's there for eight and it's a long bone in some lower vertebrates, such as frogs and toads.
11:37Shame Euro style doesn't exist because the other E was there, it would have been in.
11:40All right, let's get back to the numbers. Let's do it in style. Kev?
11:44One large, please, Rachel. The more traditional, more popular one from the top.
11:51Five little friends. And this time of the round is 8, 5, 8, 10, 7 and 75.
11:59And this time you need to make 636.
12:01636. Numbers up.
12:02– We'll see you next time –
12:04
12:32636, Kev Strain?
12:35635.
12:36What a way. Will it be good enough, Miguel Barker?
12:39635 as well.
12:40Oh, there you go. Kev, you're up.
12:43Um, eight times 75.
12:45Eight 75s are 600.
12:48And then five times seven is 35.
12:50Yep. Add that on.
12:53One away. Well done.
12:54Miguel? Eight times eight is 64.
12:57Yep. Multiply that by ten.
13:00640.
13:01Then I take the five off.
13:03Take the five off.
13:05Yep. Same result. One away and seven points.
13:08I'm back in here, Rach.
13:09Well, you've lost your money. I'm one away as well,
13:11so you have to come back.
13:12Uh, 636 proving a real challenge this Thursday afternoon
13:16as we have our sabbatical at this stage of every show
13:20with our Dictionary Corner guest.
13:22I wonder, can we just pick up, and I love these stories
13:25of these outrageous guests and these locations that,
13:28to be fair, are less and less in modern TV
13:32because the budgets are smaller and smaller and smaller.
13:37But when a show was successful in the 70s and 80s
13:40and into the 90s, I mean, they have budget, Kev, believe me.
13:44Right. Big movie stars, as we found out yesterday.
13:46Take us somewhere else, then.
13:48Um, so I'm going to take you up to Bonnie, Scotland.
13:51Yeah.
13:51And we were doing an outside broadcast
13:55where I can't remember, actually, because it was so many years ago,
13:58whether we were making the Loch Ness monster disappear.
14:01But, no, I think we were making it appear, you know,
14:04because everybody's always hunting it.
14:05And the one thing I remember about that shoot
14:09was I froze to death in between every take.
14:12We'd lay on the deck of the boat we were on, you know,
14:16trying to cuddle up and keep warm.
14:18But the thing that happened during the recording
14:22was we had two life-size Nessies, you know, that were on floats,
14:27and there was a way of making them look like they were swimming.
14:30And in the middle of the shoot, one of them broke free and sunk to the bottom.
14:36Like, anyone who's ever been to Loch Ness, the water is like black ink.
14:41Yes.
14:41And you can't see through it at all.
14:43And we had divers go down and everything.
14:46Nobody ever found it.
14:48And I just have always wondered if one day...
14:51It's going to float up.
14:52..or someone's going to be diving and actually find it
14:56and think they've seen...
14:57You know, they'll think they've seen the monster,
14:59but it will be, yeah, our whatever it was made of.
15:03Right, thank you very much, Debbie, as always.
15:04APPLAUSE
15:07Well, some say 636 with a 75 and five small numbers is a myth.
15:13Let's find out.
15:14No, as soon as I sat down, there it was.
15:1775 minus 5 is 70, times by 10 is 700,
15:22and then 8 times 8 is 64 to take away.
15:25There you have it.
15:27APPLAUSE
15:29OK, 52 plays 19.
15:32Miguel with that maximum really putting some clean air between himself and Kev.
15:36But a long way to go.
15:37More letters, Miguel.
15:38OK, Rachel, can I have a consonant, please?
15:41N.
15:42And another.
15:43S.
15:44And another.
15:45M.
15:46And another.

15:56And another.
15:57O.
15:58And another.

16:34Miguel? Eight. Kev? No, five.
16:37Yeah, you see, it always feels like you're struggling. He's not.
16:39He just has that little pause before he says the number every time.
16:43What's the five, Kev? Our hopes. What's the eight, my friend?
16:46Our phonemes. Phonemes, yes.
16:49Distinct units of sound when we speak. Well done.
16:55At least tomorrow our hands will get a rest, which will be good.
16:58Anything else? No, that was our phonies for seven, otherwise.
17:02What a surprise.
17:05It's just a countdown out of the very top drawer.
17:08It really, really is. Kev, let's get nine more letters.
17:11A consonant, please.
17:12Thank you, Kev.
17:13B.
17:14Another consonant.

18:18Bounders.
18:20Bounders.
18:20And for you, Miguel?
18:21I have rebounds.
18:22Yes.
18:23Both have to say fine.
18:24Can we add anything apart from rebounds, bounders?
18:27Sideburn.
18:28Hey, nice.
18:30Sideburn.
18:30Also known as Burnside, actually.
18:33That's right.
18:33No, you've done this before.
18:34I have, yeah.
18:35A long time ago.
18:36I might have even been in Dictionary Corner.
18:38Ah.
18:39Yes, but it was a great story.
18:41What was the story behind it?
18:42It was General Ambrose Burnside, who was an American army officer,
18:45I think during the Civil War, and he had very distinctive sideburns.
18:49They come in and out of fashion, don't they?
18:50Exactly.
18:51Yeah.
18:52Well done, both of you.
18:53Let's do numbers again, and let's ask Miguel to do the honours.
18:58OK, Rachel, can I have four large, please?

20:45Well, listen, our Miguel Barger hoping to become an octo-champ today,
20:48but he hasn't missed a stroke.
20:50I think he's saved his best performance the last.
20:53He's already on 78 points with six rounds left.
20:56He's only reached 100 once,
20:58so he's on target to absolutely smash that.
21:01Kev Strain, you've been caught, haven't you?
21:05You really have.
21:06But let's see. Let's enjoy every round together.
21:08And you're picking these letters.

22:12Five as well. What have you got, Kev? Mange. Mange, you get the points.
22:15What about you, Miguel? I have mango. Mango.
22:18Yeah. Five points each for you guys as we go again, Miguel.
22:21OK. Rachel, can I have a consonant, please?

23:20I'm going to say seven.
23:22Oh, he's going to say seven, Kev.
23:24I'm going to say five.
23:25I'm going to say, well done.
23:26What's your five?
23:28Feats.
23:28What's a seven, champ?
23:30A few joas.
23:31Yes, a few joas are absolutely fine.
23:33They're small shrubs that yield edible fruit, a bit like guavas.
23:37My goodness me.
23:39Countdown from another planet.
23:41Can we add any other words?
23:43Fiestas.
23:44Lovely.
23:45Sevens.
23:45Even nicer.
23:47Softies.
23:48Like us.
23:49Yes.
23:50Right, 90 points already for Miguel.
23:5332 for Kev.
23:54I want to see if we can get Kev to that half a century.
23:56It's a real standard mark.
23:59There's no shame in that at all.
24:00And we've got four rounds to do it after origins of words.
24:04Well, thanks to Steve Felton from South Wales,
24:07who's been wondering about a prefix.
24:09So, that doesn't sound very exciting, except to a lexicographer,
24:13but it's actually really interesting.
24:15It's the prefix ex in expression, exploration, exaggeration,
24:20and in so many others.
24:21It doesn't seem to be a single use.
24:23So, how did this happen?
24:24And what about the ex in terms of ex-partner, ex-directory, etc?
24:28Wow.
24:30That's a word that no-one on the age of 30 will know.
24:35Isn't that so funny?
24:36Yes.
24:36Such an extinct word, ex-directory, isn't it?
24:38Yes.
24:39Wow.
24:40Yes.
24:40It's a lovely place to be.
24:42Well, it appears in lots and lots of English words,
24:46just as Steve says.
24:47And, actually, there is a very common theme going through all of them.
24:51I say all, there are a couple of exceptions,
24:52but it means out of.
24:55So, you'll find it in exit, because you go out.
24:58You'll find it in exclude, because you shut something out.
25:02In export, because you sort of carry it out to the country.
25:05Extract or pull out.
25:07And, indeed, in express, explore and expect.
25:10So, in express, you get the X, obviously,
25:14and then you get the press bit.
25:17And it means to squeeze out or to press out.
25:19So, for everybody who gets very annoyed
25:22when people ask for an expresso, rather than an espresso,
25:26it does sort of pretty much mean the same thing,
25:28which is squeezed out.
25:29So, it's coffee that's squeezed out,
25:31which is quite intense, if you like.
25:33So, it's pressed out coffee.
25:35Explore is really interesting,
25:36because explore is to cry out, believe it or not.
25:42And that was its original meaning,
25:44because probably from people who were exploring new lands
25:48came across them and cried out, like, you know,
25:51Eureka, we have discovered new land,
25:53which is, I think, lovely.
25:54Expect is to look out for.
25:57Spectare is to look, as you might get in your spectacles.
26:00Explain, a little bit more complicated,
26:03and I'll try to do, to explain.
26:05It's folding out.
26:07So, that planus means,
26:08playing is from the Latin planus, meaning flat.
26:11So, you kind of make it smooth.
26:13You flatten it out so that it's easier to understand.
26:15And the X, as in former, ex-wife, ex-president, etc.,
26:19is the same X that you might get in terms of being out of office,
26:23I suppose, is that you are no longer in that position.
26:25So, you are, you know, kind of in the past, if you like,
26:28but you're out rather than in that relationship.
26:31So, it trickles through everything,
26:33apart from the one that Steve did mention, exaggerate.
26:36There, confusingly, X means thoroughly,
26:38because it's actually to heap up, to sort of really embellish.
26:41But for most of them, it's all about going out.
26:43You did that quickly, because you could do a whole week, I think,
26:46just on the EX.
26:47Yes.
26:47Yeah, really good message.
26:49At 1932, you are rising above expectation here, Miguel,
26:58and it's always been high with you.
27:00You're going to smash your high score for sure.
27:02Kev's going to do his best to match you,
27:04and you're choosing these letters, Kev.
27:05Can I have a consonant, please, Rachel?
27:07Thank you, Kev.
27:08R.
27:09A vowel.
27:11I.
27:12A consonant.
27:14T.
27:15Another consonant.
27:17T.
27:19A vowel.
27:20A.
27:21Another vowel.
27:23E.
27:24Consonant.
27:25N.
27:27Consonant.
27:29K.
27:30And a consonant, please.
27:33And a final L.
27:35Let's play.
27:35You.
27:52Oh, yeah.
28:03Who's going to go with what here?
28:08How many, Kev?
28:09Eight.
28:10You're going with eight, Miguel?
28:12Eight as well.
28:12Oh, there you go. Points, Kev?
28:15Relating.
28:16Relating.
28:17And for you, Miguel?
28:18I've retaken.
28:19Yes, retaking.
28:20Very good.
28:21Yeah.
28:21So, eights is what we have.
28:23Yes, lots of inks.
28:25Yeah.
28:25Yes, altering, alerting.
28:28But we had triangle if you want to get off the inks.
28:31It's weird, because eight's brilliant and well done at home if you've got those points.
28:35And, you know, for mere mortals like myself, eights are few and far between, so it's nice.
28:40But frustrating, in a way.
28:41It just felt like there was going to be a nine, but no such luck.
28:44Ninety-eight plays 40.
28:45Last letters, Miguel Barker.
28:47OK, Rachel, can I have a consonant, please?
28:51Thank you, Miguel.
28:51D.
28:53And another.
28:55S.
28:55And another.
28:57T.
28:58And another.
29:00G.
29:00Can I have a vowel, please?
29:04O.
29:05Another.
29:06U.
29:07And another.
29:08I.
29:08And another, please.
29:10And to finish, A.
29:12Going to miss that.
29:13Last letters.
29:13T.
29:25T.
29:26T.
29:27T.
29:27T.
29:28T.
29:29T.
29:29T.
29:30T.
29:30Miguel.
29:45Seven.
29:45Seven from you, Kev.
29:47Risky seven.
29:48And a risky seven.
29:49What's your seven, Miguel?
29:50A gutis.
29:52And for you, Kev?
29:53Outsaid.
29:54So back to Susie.
29:56It's not in, I'm afraid.
29:57I'm sorry, Kev.
29:58Drat, drat and double drat.
30:01Miguel gets up to 105.
30:04It's his highest score and there's still 20 points up for grabs.
30:07What did you have, Debbie?
30:08I didn't have anything.
30:10Yeah, it's no points for you then.
30:11What about you, Susie?
30:12Well, a gutis are the really big, long-legged rodents,
30:15as most of us know.
30:17And, I mean, where would Countdown be without its dacoits?
30:19Yes.
30:20The armed robbers.
30:21I mean, we don't want them, but they come up a lot.
30:23Yeah, there they are.
30:25All right, final numbers.
30:27Kev, nice 10 points here will get you to 50.
30:29Just remember that as you make this choice.
30:32Let's find out.
30:33One large, please, Rachel.
30:34Yep, the most solid of choices if you want those 10 points.
30:38Let's see if it works this time.
30:40Final numbers today.
30:4110, 1, 5, 7, 6, and the large one, 100.
30:47And the target, 181.
30:491, 8, 1.
30:51Numbers up.
30:52French three.
30:53It's minor.
31:01You know what?
31:05Let's get rid of your fortune.
31:07You don't think it's very good.
31:09It's only one.
31:09It comes.
31:10It comes.
31:10It comes.
31:11It's even.
31:12One large, 20ik.
31:12It comes.
31:13Yeah.
31:14It comes.
31:141-8-1, Kev?
31:251-8-1.
31:26Nice. Miguel?
31:27I have 1-8-3.
31:291-8-3 for Miguel.
31:31It's been a long week for the Barker.
31:33Kev, for 10 points.
31:34So, 10 times 7 is 70.
31:38Yep.
31:39Add the 100.
31:40170.
31:41And 6 plus 5.
31:431-8-1. Lovely.
31:44Well done.
31:47Delighted, Kev, you got to that 50.
31:49And my goodness, could be 69.
31:51Fingers on the buzzers, please.
31:53Thursday afternoons, count down, conundrum.
32:04Kev!
32:05Awareness.
32:06Goodness me!
32:07Yes!
32:10I thought it was another 14 rounds, you could win this.
32:14A lovely 60 points, and we were, you know, we were saying during the break, but just playing in such a great spirit today.
32:21Been smiling for the whole 15 rounds, and that's mainly because of you, Kev, so thank you very much.
32:26Cheers.
32:26Good man.
32:27Good man.
32:27Brilliant.
32:28Miguel, we have an octo-champ after only four episodes of series 93.
32:34So, I'm going to say this.
32:36We had seven octo-champs last season, and it took a while before they started rolling in.
32:41So, it's very early.
32:42You've got 769 points total.
32:44If this was million pound drop, I'd put 990,000 on you're going to be back in the top eight at the end of the series.
32:53But who knows?
32:54It could be one of those.
32:55It does happen where we end up with 10, 11, 12 octo-champs.
32:58But, Miguel, you are cut from a different cloth.
33:01It's been so good to have you here.
33:02And how refreshing to have someone that wasn't that familiar with Countdown.
33:07To come in here and become an octo-champ.
33:09That's just brilliant.
33:10You're a fan for life now, right?
33:12I think so, yes.
33:13Excellent.
33:13You won't ignore me in the street if we pass each other.
33:16No, we can't.
33:18Well done to you.
33:22And, Debbie McGeat, we're going to make you disappear until tomorrow at the same time.
33:26Thank you for being here.
33:28Lovely, Susie.
33:29And you are.
33:30Nicure.
33:31One thing we haven't done yet is a nickname.
33:34Yeah.
33:35And this is why, because I'm struggling a bit.
33:37We could always wait.
33:38I want it to be domino-related.
33:39So, I was thinking like double six, but then he gets eights and nines.
33:43Well, I'm thinking the Dominator.
33:44Oh, for goodness.
33:45That's so right.
33:47That's what he's been doing all week.
33:48Yeah.
33:49So, we got the domino connection.
33:50Are you happy with that?
33:51I can live with that.
33:52Lovely.
33:53Good work, Rach.
33:54What a way to end the show.
33:55Back tomorrow with two new challengers.
33:57Maybe our second octo-champ of Series 93.
34:00We'll say hello for the first time.
34:02Same time, same place.
