Katherine Newbury, une présentatrice de Talk-show, mène son équipe d'auteurs à la baguette et n'hésite pas à les licencier s'ils ne font plus l'affaire. Elle-même va faire les frais du monde impitoyable de la télévision : sa productrice lui annonce que c'est sa dernière saison. Pour faire changer d'avis la direction de la chaîne, Katherine doit trouver un moyen pour remonter l'audience de son émission. Elle embauche Molly Patel, une jeune Indienne talentueuse. Malgré des relations de travail compliquées, elle parvient à écrire des répliques qui font mouche. Peu à peu, le show renouvelle son public...
