What really makes a tomato a fruit and not a vegetable?
Transcript
00:00What's the difference between a fruit and a vegetable? Here's some kitchen table
00:06trivia. How can you tell a fruit from a vegetable? Fruits, by definition, are
00:12seed-bearing structures that develop from the ovary of a flowering plant,
00:16whereas vegetables are all other plant parts, such as roots, leaves, and stems.
00:21These definitions may sound simple, but they're quite useful. For instance, now
00:27you know that seedy growths, such as apples, squash, and yes, even tomatoes are fruits.
00:33But roots, like beets, leaves, such as spinach, and stems, like celery, are all vegetables.
00:40In culinary terms, however, the outlook is different. Chefs tend to consider savory edibles
00:46as vegetables, even if they're technically fruits. I'm talking about tomatoes, bell peppers,
00:51and eggplants. Next time you're chomping on a salad, just know this. It's healthy to eat
00:57fruits and vegetables, no matter what you call them. Fruits and vegetables, just another
01:01one of life's little mysteries.
