00:00So you, Rich Lord, and I were on remote, and as it tends to happen sometimes when we're on remote, there's technical difficulties.
00:09And so Rich is running the show. You and I are just his minions.
00:15And somehow his computer screen went blank, and on air went dead.
00:21And where we were on remote, there was some kind of an indoor track meet.
00:30Of a bunch of Asian youth athletes.
00:35This is a psychiatrist's dream right now.
00:39Like there were actually kids from Asia who would come over to America to compete or something.
00:44Run a track meet against themselves.
00:46You know, the classic kind of thing that we would go out and do a remote at.
00:49Right.
00:51But it's dead air, so there's nothing coming over.
00:55Yep.
00:55And Rich, you and Rich are sitting there acting like, what, nothing we can do about it?
01:03And I'm like, well, no, we got to call the studio.
01:05It wasn't Ben.
01:06Ben wasn't involved in this atrocity.
01:08And you looked at me like, dude, what is your deal?
01:13Why are you being such a prick about this?
01:15I'm like, because we're dead air.
01:18They're not even playing like programming or anything over the, I'm like, what are you talking about?
01:22What is my deal?
01:23Yeah.
01:24And I was furious.
01:26Were you?
01:26Furious.
01:27So I just, I, somehow we had an actual like permanent studio on site at this remote.
01:31Of course we did.
01:32I walked out the studio door.
01:35Onto the Asian athletes.
01:37Trying to remember that I need to be at a, I need to be an ambassador for America here.
01:42And not shove these little Asian kids out of the way.
01:45And then I woke up.
01:46But I was so angry at you when I woke up.
01:48You and Rich Lord, I was pissed.
01:49Were you mad?
01:50Did you feel like we were resting on our laurels?
01:53Like, eh.
01:54Yeah.
01:54Like, you just didn't care.
01:55We didn't care.
01:55You're just kind of like, you're just like, oh, whatever.
01:57Whatever happens, happens.
01:58Yeah.
01:58I can tell you.
01:59Which is the opposite of how you usually act when there's a technical issue.
02:01When there's a technical issue.
02:03You act like you care.
02:04You care too much sometimes when there's a technical issue.
02:06I do.
02:07I do.
02:08Boy, I find it like, the version that you dreamt about, I find a little bit liberating of me.
02:13I'm like, oh, really?
02:14You feel like that?
02:14I was laid back about it?
02:15Oh, that's nice.
02:17Yeah, it was funny because it's the exact opposite of how you would be.
02:20That's funny.
02:21Rich might have been.
02:22Rich would have been laid back.
02:23Rich would have been laid back.
02:23Well, no, here's the funny thing about that.
02:26When you said.
02:26Rich wouldn't have been a jerk to me about it, though.
02:28So we were being a jerk to you about it.
02:30You guys were.
02:31Okay.
02:32Yeah.
02:32You were acting like I was being a bit much.
02:36We were like, hey, try hard guy.
02:38Yeah.
02:39Hey, this guy thinks things like Rudy.
02:41You weren't respecting the sanctity of the Pan-Asian Youth Games being held in Bel Air.
02:47Okay?
02:48Were they running against any other American kids or did they all just come over here from
02:51like Tokyo to run against each other?
02:52I think where the stereotype might have creeped in was there was a boatload of kids.
02:56It was a massive, like it was Tiananmen Square or something.
03:01It was like, it was, there were a lot of kids competing at this track meet.
03:05Oh, my God.
03:06Were there events going on while we were broadcasting or were they just kind of warming up?
03:09As far as I could tell, it was just like one massive indoor race.
03:13Yeah.
03:14With these kids and kids on the track all running at the same time.
03:18And the studio door opened up right onto the track.
03:21That's so funny.
03:22And it was an elevated track, too.
03:23Oh, was it really?
03:24Almost like you were at the Galleria and there was an ice rink below or something.
03:27Are you serious?
03:28An elevated track?
03:28There was like a big, it was an elevated track.
03:30Like they have a gym sometimes, you know, where there's a basketball court down below
03:33and a track above.
03:34An elevated track with a brick and mortar studio next to it that we were doing the show from.
03:39That's amazing.
03:40You know, the funny thing, when you said, when you were talking about Rich's, Rich was steering
03:44the show and he had his computer and his computer went out.
03:47The thing that immediately flashed into my mind was, oh, my God, I bet Rich was freaking
03:51out.
03:51Because Ted and I used to mess with Rich sometimes and we would say, hey, we should just as a,
03:57like on a whim, just decide to do our show one day with no computers, no laptop, can't
04:02look anything up.
04:03It's just the three of us just, Rich did not want anything to do with that.
04:07He wanted the computer there.
04:09He would have been great.
04:10He would have been great at it.
04:11That's what I'm saying.
04:12It would have been a fun show.
04:13Well, I do that at times when I realize I've spent too much time looking up stats or something
04:19during a segment, which I am notoriously bad at.
04:22I've got like a Brian Thomas Jr. catch rate on getting the right stat.
04:25I'm like, all right, I'm being a little too Brian Thomas Jr. here.
04:28I'm just going to not look at my computer the entire segment for the whole show.
04:33And it ends up, I don't know why I don't do it more often.
04:36It's amazing.
04:36Yeah, it's amazing.
04:38Rich wouldn't do it, though.
04:39He wouldn't.
04:40He refused.
04:40He refused to do it.
04:41Yeah, we wanted to do it.
04:42My favorite moment on the old triple threat was when Rich got a new computer.
04:51And I guess because he had spent time with people at the Apple store and learning how to use it,
04:56there were all these things he was excited about, some of which were genuinely cool features
05:00that the new Mac had.
05:02But some of them were just things that had been a thing on computers for a while.
05:05I don't even have to go to Google.
05:09I can just type my search into the address bar, and it comes up.
05:14I'm like, yeah, yeah, Rich.
05:16People got to understand that Rich, and I love Rich, people got to understand.
05:21Because we weren't on YouTube back then, so you wouldn't have been able to see what was going on.
05:25Boy, there would have been days it would have been really fun to see what was going on in that studio
05:29with Ted and Rich there.
05:30But Rich would come in, and he had printed out articles, all highlighted,
05:39and he would put them in like a fan formation there.
05:43You know what I mean?
05:43Like stacked.
05:45And it was a stack of papers.
05:46On either side of his laptop.
05:48It was like eight articles fanned out on either side of the computer.
05:54He was personally deforesting parts of the state of Georgia with the amount of paper you would use.
06:01That's funny you say that.
06:03The best part was the paper that got wasted, because it wasn't 8 1⁄2 by 11 inch sheets.
06:07It was sheets that he manually cut down to be like 6 by 8, so he'd have more real estate on the desk.
06:14Yeah.
06:15He was doing –
06:16It was incredible.
06:17His show prep was like an arts and crafts project.
06:19And when we would –
06:20Dude, and when we would –
06:21Sorry, Seth.
06:22When something would come up on the show that correlated to an article in one of the stacks that he had right there,
06:29you'd get that look that somebody gets like, oh, wait a minute, wait a minute.
06:33It's like, I've got a coupon for that.
06:37It was exactly what it was.
06:39God, I loved it so much.
06:41I think I've got a coupon for that.
06:43It was an I-got-a-coupon for that moment.
06:46Good job, Ben.
06:47So glad.
06:48Well, you know what Rich used to do back in the old days before anybody was using computers, really,
06:52or before the Internet, before the Internet was as advanced as it is now,
06:57Rich would go to – there was some place in Houston that had all the newspapers from around the country.
07:03Yeah.
07:03I think it was News of the World or something.
07:05I think it was still around when I was – when I first got to Houston.
07:08So he would go every week, and he would buy the newspapers of – if the Texans were playing the Broncos,
07:13he'd go buy the Denver Post.
07:15And everything.
07:16Yeah, really, really smart.
07:17Yeah.
07:17And that was when I first – that was early – that was when I was new to radio.
07:21And I was like, oh, yeah, that's pretty simple, and you get a different perspective.
07:25So now these days, it's like I listen to their lockdown podcast, and I go read their SB Nation blogs.
07:31But the spirit behind it is the same thing, which is there's a lot of people out there that don't do the extra legwork
07:36of seeing what the other market is saying, and Rich was doing those things.
07:39So that was –
07:39His little clippings were hilarious.
07:41Oh, the clippings were great, man.
07:43That was great.
07:44I got a coupon for that.
07:45All right.
