00:00The White House says the use of the U.S. military to take over Greenland is, quote,
00:05always an option as Trump accelerates his bid to acquire the Arctic nation.
00:12Ukraine's allies have agreed to provide multi-layered international defense guarantees at a key summit in Paris.
00:20The White House says the use of the U.S. military is, quote,
00:24always an option in President Donald Trump's bid to acquire Greenland and bring it under Washington's control.
00:31The comments came in a statement released by White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt on Tuesday.
00:37The remarks appear to have caught even Republican lawmakers close to Trump by surprise,
00:42who were not briefed of the potential shift in position.
00:46Why don't you make the White House this afternoon said,
00:48maybe, you know, we'll have to use military and we're not taking it off the table.
00:53Who said that?
00:55The White House.
00:56Well, who at the White House?
00:57I mean, you know, I think it was a statement from the press office.
01:01Well, I'm going to go by what the president says,
01:03and they didn't come up in his meeting with us today,
01:05and, you know, I haven't had a discussion about it, so I don't know.
01:08I think Greenland is viewed by a lot of people
01:11as something that would be a strategic positioning for the U.S.
01:16I don't know how it develops from there.
01:18Would you be comfortable with this about military action for Greenland?
01:21No, I don't think that's perfect.
01:24Trump first floated the idea of purchasing Greenland,
01:28part of the Danish throne since the early 18th century,
01:31early in his return to the Oval Office last year.
01:35The U.S. president says the acquisition of Greenland is, quote,
01:38needed for national security purposes.
01:41Trump has renewed his interest in taking over the Arctic nation
01:44following Saturday's stunning military intervention in Venezuela,
01:48which overthrew and captured President Nicolas Maduro.
01:56Ukraine's allies have agreed to provide multi-layered international defense guarantees
02:01at a key summit in Paris on Tuesday.
02:04Leaders from Europe and Canada met with U.S. representatives,
02:07as well as top EU and NATO officials,
02:10and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky.
02:12Allies will participate in U.S.-led monitoring and verification of any ceasefire,
02:18support the long-term provision of armaments for Ukraine's defense,
02:22and work toward binding commitments to support Ukraine
02:25in the case of any future attack by Russia.
02:27The size of the supporting forces was not made public,
02:47and many of the plan's details remain unclear.
02:49We heard President Volodymyr Zelensky and some of the other people here
02:54talking about land options that will be the most critical issue,
02:59and we're going to be continuing on with those discussions,
03:04and hopefully we'll be able to meet or come up with certain compromises with regard to that.
03:10The biggest question that needs to be addressed is the territorial question.
03:15We've discussed some ideas that can help.
03:18If the teams can't solve some questions,
03:23we can take this question to the level of leaders.
03:26Zelensky said progress was made in the talks,
03:29although commitments need to be ratified by each country
03:32so that they can be put in place after any settlement.
03:35Russian forces launched dozens of drones into Ukraine overnight on Tuesday,
03:46targeting several regions, according to Ukraine's Air Force.
03:49It said 53 drones were shot down,
03:52while another eight managed to hit their targets,
03:55including in the Kherson, Zaporytia and Sumy regions.
03:59In Kherson, apartment buildings were damaged in a strike on a residential neighborhood.
04:03Regional authorities reported one person was killed in Kherson over the past day.
04:09Another person was killed in Zaporytia and one more in Donetsk, they added.
04:14Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces launched long-range strikes into Russia,
04:18hitting an ammunition and an oil facility in the Russian regions of Lipetsk and Kostroma,
04:23according to Ukraine's security service.
04:26Ukraine has escalated its strike campaign against oil facilities
04:30inside Russia and Russian-occupied territories throughout 2025,
04:34as oil and gas are key sources of revenue for Moscow's war against Ukraine.
04:43The European Commission is proposing an additional 45 billion euros to help farmers.
04:49In a letter published on Tuesday,
04:51the president of the institution put this additional funding on the table
04:55as part of the CAP, the Common Agricultural Policy.
04:59But with this announcement,
05:01Ursula von der Leyen is above all trying to convince EU member states
05:04opposed to a trade agreement with the Latin American countries of Mercosur.
05:09The EU chief hopes to overcome the reluctance of farmers in France, Italy and Poland,
05:15who fear an influx of cheap products such as beef, chicken and sugar.
05:19The move is intended to convince Rome in particular,
05:23whose vote would secure a qualified majority among the 27 member states.
05:28The vote could take place on Friday.
05:30If given the green light,
05:32Ursula von der Leyen could then travel to Paraguay early next week
05:35to sign the trade agreement,
05:37which would eliminate 90% of customs duties.
05:40Fire safety inspections hadn't been carried out for five years
05:49at the Le Constellation Bar in the Swiss Alps town of Kranz, Montana,
05:53where a fire killed 40 people
05:55and left more than 100 injured during a New Year's Eve party.
06:00Investigators said they believe sparklers on top of champagne bottles
06:03ignited the fire when they came too close to the ceiling.
06:06A resurfaced video from a 2019 New Year's Eve celebration at the same bar
06:12shows the dangers posed by the soundproofing foam on the ceiling
06:16may have been known for a long time.
06:19In the video, an employee is heard warning customers
06:22as they carried bottles with the same sparklers
06:24believed to be responsible for the deadly fire.
06:30Mayor Nicolas Ferrault told a press conference on Tuesday
06:34that the last inspection was done in 2019
06:36and couldn't immediately explain
06:38why they hadn't been carried out since then.
06:41Authorities are looking into whether soundproofing material
06:44on the ceiling complied with regulations
06:46and whether the candles were permitted for use in the bar.
06:50Swiss authorities have opened a criminal investigation
06:52into the bar managers.
06:54The two are suspected of involuntary homicide,
06:57involuntary bodily harm,
06:59and involuntarily causing a fire.
07:01Protests staged a sit-in at Tehran's Grand Bazaar
07:08on Tuesday to voice their objection to security forces
07:11using lethal force to disperse mass demonstrations.
07:15Activists say at least 36 people were killed
07:18in clashes with security forces
07:20in rallies that have been taking place across major cities,
07:24including Isfahan and the capital since December.
07:26The protest at Tehran's Grand Bazaar
07:29was largely shuttered on Tuesday,
07:31but was the latest sign that demonstrations
07:33will likely continue as the country
07:35continues to struggle economically.
07:38Protests started in December
07:39over stubbornly high inflation,
07:42hovering above 40% of the time,
07:44which have contributed to a rapid rise in food prices,
07:47estimated at around 72%.
07:48The country's currency, the real,
07:52has also plummeted to a new record low,
07:55trading at $1.46 million against the US dollar.
07:58The real was largely stable in the 1970s,
08:02trading at approximately $70 per dollar,
08:05ahead of the 1979 Islamic revolution.
08:08In 2015,
08:10at the time of Iran's nuclear deal with superpowers,
08:13one US dollar exchanged for roughly $32,000.
08:17Protesters say they will continue to demonstrate
08:19until their issues are resolved,
08:21despite a heavy crackdown from security forces.
08:24Last week,
08:26US President Donald Trump promised to intervene,
08:29threatening Tehran with military action
08:31if it continued to resort to deadly force against protesters.
08:39Orthodox Christians across Europe
08:41are closing off the Christmas season
08:42with celebrations of Epiphany.
08:45The holiday marks the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist,
08:48and is celebrated in different ways
08:50by Orthodox Christian communities.
08:53Some Western Christian churches know the feast as Three Kings Day,
08:56recalling the visit of the three wise men to the infant Jesus,
09:00and their sense of wonder at the encounter.
09:03In some places,
09:04such as Greece and Turkey,
09:06the celebration involves swimmers competing
09:08to retrieve a wooden cross
09:09thrown by a priest into the water.
09:12In Bulgaria's celebration,
09:14men entered the icy waters of the Tunja River,
09:17accompanied by bagpipers and drummers
09:19to perform the traditional horro dance.
09:22Romanian villagers gathered on the pastures
09:25of the southern village of Pietrasani with their horses
09:28to receive blessings from a priest.
09:30They drank plum brandy and mulled wine
09:32and ate grilled spicy sausages to celebrate the feast.
09:36The holiday also marked the end of the Vatican's 2025 Holy Year,
09:41a year-long celebration
09:42that saw some 33 million pilgrims flock to Rome.
09:47After a prayer at the holy door of St. Peter's Basilica,
09:50Pope Leo pulled the two doors shut,
09:52symbolically closing out the Jubilee.
09:54A ver,
10:05yo creo que el padel es un deporte,
10:20¿vale?,
10:20que es fácil no aprender a jugar,
10:23sino jugar en sí.
10:24Es decir,
11:19Entonces me gusta esa sensación
11:21como del aire libre,
11:22del ruido que hace la pelota contra la pala.
11:26Me recuerda mucho a esos momentos de playa
11:27con la familia en verano.
