00:57TV James Nesbitt here talking about his starring role in Harlan Coben's latest
01:02addictive thriller runaway in which he takes the law into his own hands to track
01:06down his missing daughter we are talking suspense secrets and plenty of shocking
01:11twists and if that's not enough drama for you Quadrophenia and EastEnders actor
01:15Phil Daniels and Josh Finan the BAFTA nominated star of the responder will be
01:19telling us about their powerful new BBC series it's called waiting for the out and it
01:24looks at life behind bars in a tough men's prison I am such a big fan of that
01:29show and talking of powerful stories Helen Skelton's got plenty of them as lost and
01:33found in the lakes returns to our screens it sees her helping to track down
01:37missing treasures and reuniting them with their owners Helen's gonna be here to
01:42share some of those emotional moments very shortly yes another good one and of
01:46course we love hearing from you if you've got a question or comment about the
01:51show tonight then do get in touch on whatsapp oh double three zero one two
01:54three one seven hundred socials or email but first with yellow weather warnings
01:58in place for large parts of the country tonight and with thermostats being
02:02turned up to cope with the freezing temperatures lots of us are looking at
02:06ways to save on energy bills and Joe Crowley has been exploring an alternative
02:10way to heat your home that more of us are being encouraged to consider than ever
02:13before it's about helping to save the planet but can it also help you save
02:18money as the UK moves towards greener energy heat pumps are seen as the main
02:27way we'll heat our homes without fossil fuels the government wants 600,000 heat
02:33pumps to be installed every year in the UK by 2028 but even with grants and
02:38incentives take-up has been slow especially among older homeowners 77
02:47year-old Dennis is thinking about getting one what's holding you back from
02:51getting a heat pump the solar panels that we had fitted that was 10 years ago
02:56that was ten thousand one hundred parent now I've already got my money back off
03:00those it would take me a long long time to get my money back on the savings that I
03:08make if I had a heat pump air source heat pumps extract heat from the air outside
03:15and use it to warm the water in your home's heating system ground source pumps
03:19are similar but get their heat from the earth through buried pipes making them
03:24harder to install they both run on electricity which costs more than gas so
03:29if your house isn't well insulated your bills could rise to help Dennis decide
03:34we've enlisted the help of his neighbor Clive we're not going far then Clive had an
03:42air source heat pump installed on his 1930s terrace four years ago so Clive what
03:47made you decide to get a heat pump I had to put the money up front but the
03:50government's giving me it back providing I keep using it
03:53so how does it work for you it's been excellent I'm running the whole of my house
03:59but between 20 and 22 degrees but that's day and night because this thing is supposed to stay
04:04on yeah I'm paying 62 pounds a month electricity bill no gas bill what are there the tricky bits
04:10that people have to be aware of I have lost quite a lot of space without quite a huge indirect
04:15cylinder for the hot water and a lot of people would find it difficult that could be a problem
04:19with mine because I just don't know where it would go as Clive found these systems often
04:25require extra indoor space for large cylinders and there can be other issues too this is my new
04:31heat pump it's my second one Jane was an early adopter of heat pumps back in 2011 we had one major
04:40issue with it in 2018 which produced a massive air block and it resulted in about three months of
04:49no heating during the winter of the beast of the east which wasn't pleasant we had fan heaters in
04:55all the rooms and it did mean that the electricity bills just went through the ceiling plus the
05:01additional cost of the the work on the kit itself before making his decision Dennis and I are going
05:08to hear firsthand about Jane's experiences how tricky is it to navigate this area the initial setup is a bit
05:15complex have you found just the radiators adequate yes I found them fine you know I'm sitting here in
05:22a long-sleeved t-shirt not a sweatshirt and the muffler do you think that problems like the one
05:28you experience will become fewer and further between it's one of those technologies they're
05:33constantly gaining knowledge so yes I think it's it's a learning curve to find out the installation costs
05:40I'm meeting up with professor Fleur Loveridge an energy and sustainability expert from the University
05:45of Leeds air source heat pumps might cost around 10 or 11,000 pounds upfront capital costs if you want
05:53to look at a ground source heat pump that will be more it could be twice as much an incentive for those
05:58looking to switch from fossil fuel heating could be the government's boiler upgrade scheme grant of
06:04seven and a half thousand pounds which is available in England and Wales how easy is it to switch over
06:10to a heat pump can any house do it almost all properties should be suitable for installation of a
06:15heat pump older homes may need insulation upgrades to make heat pumps work effectively after our visit
06:23Dennis is reflecting on whether he's ready to make the switch I don't think it's for me my main
06:29reservations are the reliability of the system the space needed inside the property it would take me
06:36a long time to recoup the the the investment that I made heat pumps aren't for every home the practical
06:44considerations and costs can be problematic but they're an important step towards a greener future
06:50thank you Joe some big decisions to make for people and lots of people have been watching that with great
06:58interest especially now and in the coming weeks we're going to have some more films looking at
07:02other things that might affect your decision to go green this year yeah do keep your eyes peeled for
07:07them time now to say hello to tonight's guests who have got great New Year TV shows actors James
07:13Nesbitt Phil Daniels Josh Finan and presenter Helen Skelton um Helen you've been busy you are put the crack of
07:25dawn with morning live already I know I mean to go for 2026 well I feel like I'm I mean I've got with
07:30rural symptoms from my pyjamas and my baileys and home alone but yeah let's do a double ball you know
07:36what it's like when you're out the house you may as well commit yeah exactly no that's it you're in
07:40it you're in a boot and a PVC skirt me too bit you've just got to go with it I'm gonna make it work
07:44all right let's start with our first TV treat because James is back in Harlan Coben's latest binge
07:50worthy drama runaway he plays a father who goes in search of his missing daughter let's take a look
07:55I really need to speak to your daughter I don't know where she is
07:59no what what Paige please
08:01let go of me
08:03you know this man it's Aaron Corvall it's our daughter's boyfriend I believe he keeps her
08:10against her will he was found dead last night Paige couldn't have done this no but you could have
08:16so intense well congratulations James another number one already the the most watched show over
08:28here and in the States on Netflix which is fantastic and getting so much love from people
08:33lots of people binging it already beta says runaway a total binge watch for me I watched it all in one
08:39goal one session I mean that is it really is I like to take my time with things I've only watched
08:45the first one but James you play Simon but just give us some background on the character and tell
08:51us where we find him when we start watching it Simon Green is a successful for happily married three
08:57kids businessman but when we find him six months previous his eldest daughter Paige has disappeared she's
09:08run away she got involved in drugs with a very dangerous and worrying boyfriend and has has gone
09:19she had to be the mini driver who plays my wife has said she's got to leave but Simon is determined to
09:25find her so in the very first episode he gets a tip-off that she has been found he finds her she disappears and then in
09:32typical Harlan Coben fashion he gets drawn into a world of violence of intrigue twisty turner roller coaster the
09:43juggernaut that is Harlan Coben so it's um you know whatever goes on in Harlan's mind I don't want to know but it
09:50appeals to people I think and and and and also he creates extraordinary stories with kind of ordinary people and I think that's a good collision yeah is that why you like working with him because this is your third collaboration yeah you must have him on speed
10:02dial now he's great and also he's so invested it's quite unusual I mean the whole key street netflix team
10:08that make hard and shows it's one big you know it sounds cliche to say it but it's one big family and um
10:14and they're always there hard and you can contact any time if you want to change something he's always
10:18there and nicolas shinder the producer there they're a really tight team and then they get great cast great
10:22crews and and i get to film in manchester which i love so it's good i mean you mentioned uh working with
10:27minnie driver who plays your wife brilliant ruth jones who you know i think we saw there in the
10:32in the clip you're fantastic together but you're also working with this brilliant younger generation
10:37of actors and i know you've really enjoyed that seeing that new talent coming through no they're
10:40fantastic you know i still there's still a bit of me that thinks like my mother always used to say you're
10:44one age all your life and she said to me she said about eight she said james you'll always be 17 which
10:49was kind of accurate and worrying but um but it's great now to kind of been working for a long time to
10:55work with the young ones in this like john punting he's fantastic ellie delaney who plays uh page me
11:00uh who plays the other kind of baby-faced assassin it's just it's it's brilliant to kind of be sort of
11:06part of their journey and they're you know passing me in the ladder as they go up and i kind of head
11:11down i know you're doing a bit of mentoring you know giving them a bit of advice and encouragement
11:16well yeah you try to but i mean they it's they're very different from my generation my generation and
11:21films generation we enjoyed ourselves a wee bit when we were their age and i think they're still
11:25doing that a bit but but the um but they're great and it's just they're so invested and and and that's
11:31the beauty of it and that's what they treat it with respect i mean you know you've got a young one
11:35here exactly well josh i know that you um martin freeman who you worked with on the responder gave
11:42you a bit of advice about your new show didn't he yeah i did yeah i went to um i went to who i know you
11:47and i went to chat to martin um because it was this this job was a little bit of like a step up for
11:53me do you know what i mean it was in terms of what it demands of yourself do you know what i mean in
11:58terms of a bit just to be a part also what it the time that you have to be there like when we did that
12:04show um the responder like sometimes i'd have a week off do you know what i mean what i'm gonna do
12:09when i don't have a week off when i'm in sort of every day and so i went to chat to him
12:13uh and i ran this by my sister i said i'm gonna go and chat to martin tomorrow
12:18and she was like oh why i was like well i just pick his brain do you know what i mean and like
12:22just find out what it's like to be in work every day and she goes do you know you could ask literally
12:26anybody else i was like i thought i was a man of the people then she brought me down yeah and james
12:36you mentioned about filming in manchester we know that place is a special special hold in your heart
12:41because you're a manchester united fan now i know i don't know how you're gonna feel about me
12:45bringing up the second today well i think it's um you know it's interesting i don't think it's a
12:50huge surprise it just seems a bit shambolic the whole thing you know i mean i it's been a shambles
12:57for a while but you know it was never going to be easy to replace for alex ferguson and i think
13:00we're now finding that you know i kind of there's a bit of me that wishes david and lois has been
13:03given a bit more time all those years ago but um but you know the thing is i am available uh
13:10that was gonna be they could do worse i mean you know um but no it's uh extraordinary times
13:16yes but you love the area you love the place so it must have been great to film there oh it's magic
13:20you know i i've loved working there because i did so many years of cool feet there and you know to
13:25to be a united fan and to be filming there and then also this year my uh mary my second daughter she
13:31was finishing her mantra her degree in manchester so she was with me all the time up there so it was
13:36it's you know it's a it's a treat it's a real privilege you know but also the work is the
13:41privilege you know it was it was pretty relentless but you can't complain about it that's that's the
13:47privilege of the job well listen smash it already congratulations runaway is available to watch on
13:53netflix now still to come helen will be chatting about the emotional reunions in the latest series of
13:59lost and found in the lakes but first phil and josh here are starring in the brilliant bbc drama
14:04waiting for the out which is already receiving glowing reviews set in a men's prison josh's
14:09character dan teaches philosophy lessons to inmates however the job leaves him questioning his own life
14:17welcome to prison first day only to imagine two fictional worlds
14:22first it's called the just world you are choosing to go into that place in here i don't think about
14:30being a good person and the other the luck world yeah that world is imaginary but i do feel bad about
14:35not being a good man
14:41so josh this absolutely blew me away i mean it's not your average prison drama this is it so viewers might
14:47expect you know think and think that your character who's going in to help the inmates he's got all
14:52the answers he's going in to kind of help these guys but actually that couldn't be further from the truth
14:58could it i mean he's got issues of his own yeah that's why i sort of love that character really because
15:03you meet um dan and if you met dan on the street you might assume that you knew everything about him he's a
15:09i don't know a floppy-haired lad that crosses his legs and sort of is seemingly you know middle class
15:15and it and inside um he that that betrays the background that he's come from which is um he grew
15:23up and his several members of his family um were incarcerated his dad and his uncle and his brother
15:30um he feels like he narrowly sort of escaped going down that route himself because his mum remarried and
15:36he grew up in a fairly middle class environment and went to uni and is now interested in sort of you
15:41know art and culture and and philosophy um and so he he presents as one thing but has a hidden past
15:51and also he doesn't i like the show because it looks at sort of like we were just chatting then about
15:57like the show is about men really and different looks at what men are like yeah it presents the
16:04prisoners as um very non-stereotypical they're guys that use their heads it shows the sensitive
16:11and intellectual side of the prisoners and then it also shows a different side to this seemingly very
16:18like in control calm guy his head's a mess do you know what i mean yeah um and so i like the fact
16:23that it flipped both of those sort of stereotypes really we're going to be filling now because you
16:27play dan's uncle frank that's right he's lived a very different life to dan hasn't he well yeah i mean
16:33he's been in prison and out of prison all his life really and he gets released and is about but
16:40finds it very very difficult to adjust to living in the modern world really and is given a job and
16:49he has to go and work and he's not used to working and he's going to work pushing trolleys
16:54at a supermarket and uh but he's inundated and he feels terrible because he's got too many forms to
17:03fill in these days he just he's pushing trolleys he doesn't understand the logistics of what it's like
17:08to have a job these days so he goes into himself a bit um he's had to adapt to the modern world he's had
17:15to adapt to the modern world but he's fun and he enjoys his life and he tells lots and lots of stories
17:20about his life and and prisons and how much fun prison was to him and that he's you know lived
17:27his life in prisons and that the men in prisons are forgotten when they come out so it's a quite
17:35interesting character and a fabulous show because i watched it all last night and it was fantastic i
17:45really and he was great i mean you've got to do some amazing research for the part as well didn't
17:52you because um it's adapted from a memoir written by andy west and you went into a prison with him
17:58where he was teaching philosophy yeah what was that like yeah it was that was an amazing experience um
18:03i i love andy he's a very like special guy and i'm so glad i mean i'd be glad to do this job anyway
18:08do you know what i mean but not least of all because i now know him do you know what i mean
18:13it is sort of inspired by his life the story takes it takes a bit of a divergence from his
18:20direct you know biography but that day in prison was was kind of amazing like to walk around and
18:25chat to the inmates and chat to staff and watch him watch him teach which i think is like was a
18:30very beautiful thing like he going back to what i was saying before about that you know someone who
18:35presents as one thing like if he was ever nervous in there it didn't show do you know what i mean
18:40and he never once tried to sort of adapt or be sort of like anything he wasn't jenny so he wasn't
18:47wearing socks the day we went in do you know what i mean he had loafers with no socks and i was like
18:50i can't believe you're not wearing socks in prison that's that's mad to me gentlemen and yeah that's
18:54just and he's yeah so he's a wonderful guy and i was grateful to learn from him you mentioned your
18:59sister before um you grew up on the wirral and were filming nearby so and apparently that meant your
19:04family could come down and and be in the mix as extras yeah they they came in yeah they came they
19:10they'd always sort of joked about it me and was like yeah because i've worked in liverpool a little
19:14bit and she was always like oh we'll come over from being it and i was like well all right and so
19:18they did yeah yeah yeah yeah it was a christening christening yeah yeah so yeah so film and um and
19:25we had yeah we had a lovely like lovely afternoon it's great it must have been great for them to see
19:29what you do and be immersed in it yeah quite funny i don't think actually they knew what they were
19:33getting into it my mom comes up to me at one point and goes it's taken a while this isn't it because
19:39of like you know you've got to do it all over and over again and she was like it's taking a while like
19:43are we we're not doing it wrong are we like again for us like they would tell us wouldn't they if
19:47we were doing it i said no you're you're doing it right with that case she's an extra in um
19:54runaway she gets to say um uh two words to me uh no which i can't repeat here
20:00she was very very convincing oh my goodness and waiting for the out continues on saturday it's
20:08at 9 35 p.m on bbc one and iphone right spoiler alert because in a moment we're going to be chatting
20:13to the first famous face to leave the masked singer at the weekend so if you don't want to know who it
20:17is yet go and make yourself a cup of tea yeah have you gone good because we have so many questions
20:23to ask this person before we chat to them here's how they got on on saturday night
20:38oh my goodness
20:52my father was well and truly gasted she kept that very very quiet my goodness and we can go to alex
20:58right now on a sunny tuesday morning in new zealand where she's visiting family al you were amazing
21:04what a surprise i nearly fell off my sofa i have to admit but you did an incredible job
21:08and i know you and the family are big fans of the show so it must have been so exciting for everyone
21:13once they knew i tell you what i mean i was so stressed about it i've come to the furthest place
21:20on earth so i could avoid it no i'm joking um but the the children have always loved the show
21:27um and we watch it as a family on a saturday night and i just thought for them the surprise
21:32would be so fantastic and it really was we watched it with them last night and it was amazing
21:37they hadn't for a second guessed it was me and i think that's the joy of the show it's so much fun
21:43to do um you know it's the only chance you're gonna get to learn how to sing i mean i say sing you
21:48know vaguely um oh it was all right but it it was just such a joyous show to do it was really good
21:56fun and the kids loved it oh well the panel had no idea it was you either you disguised your voice
22:02so well your sister apparently spat out her g and t when it was revealed that it was you and another
22:07great reveal last night because it turns out that tea bag was professor green but you didn't know that
22:13because you have no idea who anybody else is on the show the celebs don't know right no so the way
22:19it works i mean it's so secretive and it's done so brilliantly but the way it works um you do your
22:24bit you do your performance and then you get taken back to your dressing room and you don't hear any
22:30other performance at all so last night was the first time i heard the four other contestants on the
22:36same program as me um you've got no idea so you're a little bit in the dark so i had nothing to compare
22:42it to at all um and it was really fun to watch the show all stitched together that that was great
22:47well you kicked off the new year in new zealand our visiting family but quickly
22:51tell us how excited you are to be celebrating 20 years of the one show once you get back
22:56oh well i think it's going to be a really special year for us 20 years of any show is such
23:01a great achievement um it's mega isn't it and it's all thanks to our viewers who are so loyal
23:07we've got loads of things planned kicking off with another amazing 500 words and i can't wait to get
23:12back on the sofa i'll see you very soon happy new year from new zealand happy new year enjoy the rest
23:19of your break we'll see you soon lots of love there she goes there she goes our singing star and the
23:26mask singer continues this saturday 7 p.m on itv1 and itvx helen do you think you could in fact you
23:32could no be on master the mass singer no we don't know i know i once sang many moons ago when it went
23:39out on tv i had such a physical reaction i hid under the desk it was so bad never again never again
23:45even if you get to dress up as a tea bag for example well one show that we know helen loves doing
23:53is lost and found in the lakes which came back for a new series this afternoon it sees helen and her
23:58crack team of experts try to reunite people with their cherished possessions that they've lost around
24:03the lake district and this series isn't just about losing things that are valuable it's about the
24:08stories behind them and helen tomorrow there's a sentimental object you're on the hunt for um after
24:14a fire yeah it's always about the story behind the object you know people come to us and they always
24:19go oh gosh i feel so silly for getting upset about a materialistic item but it's never about that you
24:24know that wedding rings represent a chapter of life together you know quite often we have people who've
24:29lost their partners you know we had a lady who was 91 and paddleboarded she lost her late husband's
24:34wedding ring and she said when i wore it i felt like i was holding his hand yeah and tomorrow it's a
24:39different item uh there was a fire on a boat sandra was living on this boat and it was a chapter of
24:46her life where a lot of things were going on and she was you know doing something totally new something
24:50random living on the boat her whole life was on there the boat went up in smoke and she had this
24:55talisman that she had taken with her and it went into the water so we tasked our team with with finding
25:01the item i'm not allowed to say if we find it don't it's so it's on tomorrow so this is the search for
25:06the elephant right search for the elephant is on tomorrow okay we can we can actually have a little look
25:10at that now let's see that and it looks like the boat was sort of drifting this way at that point
25:17have you watched the video but the elephant fell off sort of in front of here there's signals
25:24everywhere yeah so i reckon you're better off this way a bit
25:32i'm really hoping this new information can help
25:40oh i mean as you say helen people have to tune in to find out how that one resolves but i know
25:47there's a story that you loved about a cherished ring lost 60 years ago another ring yeah so we get
25:52asked to find a lot of wedding rings uh this was a wedding ring lost in 1966 uh so this guy's on the
26:00football sidelines i'm sure you can all empathize being dedicated followers of football it got a bit
26:05heated on the sidelines these two guys had a bust up and the ring was lost for 60 years
26:12uh we go back to try and find the wedding ring but again it's not what's so wonderful is this
26:18gentleman stands there in front of me and you know we've all navigated life and and marriages and
26:23divorces and grief and friendships and he stood there and he said i love my wife as much now as i did
26:29when i met her this ring is a symbol of our life it's a representation of our children and our
