00:11Authorities say safety inspections at the Swiss Alps bar where a New Year's Eve fire killed 40 people had not been conducted for five years.
00:20The European Commission is proposing an additional 45 billion euros to help farmers to convince EU member states opposed to a trade agreement with Microsoft.
00:31Ukraine's allies have gathered in Paris on Tuesday for key talks by the Coalition of the Willing on how to guarantee the country's security after a possible peace deal.
00:42Talks on security guarantees are supposed to focus on how a ceasefire would be monitored, how to support Ukraine if it is breached, and military support for Kyiv in general.
00:53Prospects of progress are uncertain after the U.S. attention shifted to Venezuela, and while Donald Trump's suggestion of a Greenland takeover are causing tension with Europe, 35 officials, including 27 heads of states and governments, will attend the talks, according to President Macron's office.
01:11The U.S. is represented by Donald Trump's envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, after Secretary of State Marco Rubio changed his plans for reasons linked to the military intervention in Venezuela, Macron's office said.
01:25Russian forces launched dozens of drones into Ukraine overnight on Tuesday, targeting several regions, according to Ukraine's Air Force.
01:39It said 53 drones were shot down, while another eight managed to hit their targets, including in the Kherson, Zaporizhia and Sumi regions.
01:49In Kherson, apartment buildings were damaged in a strike on a residential neighborhood.
01:54Regional authorities reported one person was killed in Kherson over the past day.
01:59Another person was killed in Zaporizhia and one more in Donetsk, they added.
02:03Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces launched long-range strikes into Russia, hitting an ammunition and an oil facility in the Russian regions of Libetsk and Kostroma, according to Ukraine's security service.
02:16Ukraine has escalated its strike campaign against oil facilities inside Russia and Russian-occupied territories throughout 2025,
02:24as oil and gas are key sources of revenue for Moscow's war against Ukraine.
02:33Fire safety inspections hadn't been carried out for five years at the Le Constellation Bar in the Swiss Alps town of Kranz, Montana,
02:42where a fire killed 40 people and left more than 100 injured during a New Year's Eve party.
02:47In these circumstances, as immediate measures, we have taken the decision of mandating a specialized outside office
02:57to make a control of our 128 public buildings in the community as quickly as possible.
03:06In this mandate, the community will also require the control of materials, despite the fact that the law does not expect it.
03:15Investigators said they believe sparklers on top of champagne bottles ignited the fire when they came too close to the ceiling.
03:24A resurfaced video from a 2019 New Year's Eve celebration at the same bar shows the dangers posed by the soundproofing foam on the ceiling may have been known for a long time.
03:36In the video, an employee is heard warning customers as they carried bottles with the same sparklers believed to be responsible for the deadly fire.
03:43Mayor Nicolas Ferraud told a press conference on Tuesday that the last inspection was done in 2019
03:54and couldn't immediately explain why they hadn't been carried out since then.
03:59Authorities are looking into whether soundproofing material on the ceiling complied with regulations
04:04and whether the candles were permitted for use in the bar.
04:08Swiss authorities have opened a criminal investigation into the bar managers.
04:12The two are suspected of involuntary homicide, involuntary bodily harm and involuntarily causing a fire.
04:23The European Commission is proposing an additional 45 billion euros to help farmers.
04:29In a letter published on Tuesday, the president of the institution put this additional funding on the table
04:35as part of the CAP, the Common Agricultural Policy.
04:39But with this announcement, Ursula von der Leyen is above all trying to convince EU member states opposed to a trade agreement with the Latin American countries of Mercosur.
04:49The EU chief hopes to overcome the reluctance of farmers in France, Italy and Poland
04:55who fear an influx of cheap products such as beef, chicken and sugar.
04:59The move is intended to convince Rome in particular, whose vote would secure a qualified majority among the 27 member states.
05:08The vote could take place on Friday.
05:10If given the green light, Ursula von der Leyen could then travel to Paraguay early next week
05:15to sign the trade agreement which would eliminate 90% of customs duties.
05:20The Hungarian government will, quote, not shed a single tear over the overthrow of a dictator also implicated in drug trafficking.
05:32This is what Prime Minister Viktor Orban said regarding the US recent intervention in Venezuela which captured President Nicolas Maduro.
05:39According to Orban, Washington had both the right and the power to carry out the action.
05:44As a result, the US will control 40% of the world's oil reserves, which could drive prices down.
06:00Viktor Orban also noted that following the collapse of the decades-long liberal world order, the age of sovereign nations will begin in 2026.
06:07He suggested that in this new area, international law will no longer matter, only power will.
06:12The EU, he predicted, will slowly fall apart on its own, as member states continue to fail to reach agreements on migration,
06:19green initiatives, and above all, the war in Ukraine.
06:25The United States faced fierce criticism at an emergency UN Security Council session on Monday
06:31over Washington's recent intervention in Venezuela.
06:34The backlash was expected in what was a bold, assertive action by the Trump administration
06:40to militarily topple and capture Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Saturday.
06:47But the precedent the move sets has even US allies concerned with what future global relations could look like.
06:53No state should seek to influence political outcomes in Venezuela through the use of threat of force
07:00or through other means inconsistent with international law.
07:03The United Kingdom reaffirms its commitment to international law
07:09and the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.
07:14These foundations are essential for maintaining global peace, security, and the rule of law.
07:22Venezuela slammed the intervention and called for the immediate release of Maduro and his wife,
07:28Celia Flores.
07:46Foes of Washington's presented a hardline stance against what they called
07:51cynical crimes committed in Caracas.
07:53The U.S., however, remained defiant, backing its military action and defending it as legal
08:16and legitimate.
08:17President Trump gave diplomacy a chance.
08:21He offered Maduro multiple off-ramps.
08:25He tried to de-escalate.
08:29Maduro refused to take them.
08:32President Trump made it clear that the narco-terrorism must stop, and yet it continued.
08:39The United States will not waver in our actions to protect Americans from the scourge of narco-terrorism
08:47and seeks peace.
08:49Maduro is currently being held in New York, where he faces trial on charges of narco-terrorism.
08:55He made his first appearance in a Manhattan courthouse on Monday, where he pled not guilty.
09:00Israeli Air Force struck multiple sites in southern Lebanon late on Monday and into the early hours
09:10of Tuesday, including targets in the third-largest city of Sidon.
09:15A missile struck a three-story building located in the commercial district of the coastal city,
09:20leveling it to the ground.
09:22There were no reports of deaths, but local officials say one person sustained injuries
09:27and was transported to hospital for treatment.
09:31Israel said on Monday following strikes in southern and eastern Lebanon that it was targeting
09:35sites belonging to Hezbollah and Hamas.
09:38The attacks come just days before Lebanon's government convenes to discuss Hezbollah's
09:43disarmament, part of a U.S.-brokered cease-fire deal with Israel late in 2024.
09:48The Lebanese army began the process last year and said that all areas close to the border with
09:54Israel will be clear of the group's armed presence.
09:57A strong earthquake shook western Japan on Tuesday, but no major damage or life-threatening
10:07injuries were reported.
10:09But, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, there were several reports of minor
10:14injuries.
10:15There was no risk of a tsunami from the inland quake centered about 10 kilometers deep, authorities
10:21said.
10:22According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the magnitude 6.4 quake struck in the Shimani
10:29prefecture in northwestern Japan.
10:31The prefectural capital of Matsue and nearby cities, including some in neighboring Totori
10:37prefecture, were among the most strongly shaken.
10:41authorities also announced delays and suspension of bullet trains in the region.
10:47Japan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of seismic folds surrounding the Pacific
10:53Ocean, one of the world's most earthquake-prone regions.
11:00This is the final stage marking the end of the Catholic Church's Jubilee 2025.
11:09On Tuesday, Pope Leo XIV closed the holy door of St. Peter's Basilica.
11:15Before bringing the celebrations to a close, the pontiff recited the prayer of Thanksgiving
11:20for the holy year.
11:21This holy door is closed, but the door of your clemency is not closed, was the formula provided
11:27by the rite.
11:28The actual walling of the door will take place privately later, in about 10 days.
11:34This will bring to a close the Jubilee of Hope, inaugurated by Pope Francis in December
11:392024, marking the first time in history that a Jubilee year was presided over by two popes.
