00:00In the 90s became everyone's favorite uncle on Full House and today he continues to wow audiences
00:05around the globe performing with the legendary Beach Boys. But when he's not busy donning the
00:10best hair in Hollywood or playing to screaming fans, John Stamos is usually doing this. Ken and
00:16I met when we were kids. I ambushed a magic show he was doing and that's been our friendship for
00:21the last 50 years. I'm gonna go in and I'll just start banging on his drums. You guys come with me.
00:26I came over here a lot when both my parents were sick and we could just sit here and talk. He's just
00:32a guy who's always there. John! He really is, has been the wind beneath my wings. I love you buddy.
00:40I love you too. There's something magical about this garage. What's all that noise out here?
00:44We practice our magic. We practice our drums. It's part of my history as well. That space deserves
00:50to be transformed into something incredible. And then we'll just cut to me as if I've done it all.
00:54Go back to that space and feel that energy was very special. Whoa!
00:59Oh my God! Can you believe this? This is unreal!
01:04Let me start by saying what you guys do is one of the most beautiful
01:21things to be able to gift, you know, good people with, with, you know better than anybody. Your
01:27home is your, is your life, your base, your center. You guys are dream makers and it's really, the world
01:34needs more Property Brothers. Well, thank you. Thank you for saying that. The world needs more
01:38Stamos. Do we sing Beach Boys? This is not Carpool Karaoke. This is a different show. Oh, it is?
01:44Do you still do that? Yeah. I'm still on tour with them. It's been since 85 was the first time I've played
01:49with them. My friend was playing with the Beach Boys and he said, you know, you want to meet the
01:52guys? I'm like, yeah. They're playing in San Diego. So I jump on the field and I hear all this screaming
01:57and I was like, what the hell's going on? It was, you know, like 50 cheerleaders screaming at me.
02:02I just started, I was on General Hospital one time. And I run backstage and there they are,
02:06my heroes. And I'm like, and Mike Love says to my friend, who's that? He says, John Stamos is a
02:11really good drummer. He's on General Hospital, you know, and Mike said, do girls scream for him
02:15like that all the time? And my friend said, yeah. He goes, get him on stage. Oh my God. That was it.
02:20Wait, have girls always screamed like that for John Stamos or was there ever a phase where you were
02:26awkward? Yes. In fact, we're pulling up to my high school right here. You know, I was the dorky. I was
02:31just kind of coming into my own high school. This is the field where we would do marching band. We
02:37were, Ken and I were in marching band. I played tritoms and he was, he played snare. He was a great
02:41drummer. Still is. Do you remember how old were you when you met Ken? Well, he, so right down the
02:48street over there, he was, uh, he was doing a magic show. Another magician? And we just became best
02:55friends then. Ken has been the wind beneath my wings. I know that sounds corny, but like without Ken,
03:01I wouldn't be where I'm at. I guarantee it. He's my Yoda. He's been my rock. He's been my therapist
03:07and never, ever has he ever asked for anything. And that's been our friendship for the last 50 years.
03:13So what is it Ken needs at his house? We share all the same hobbies, photography, magic, but mainly
03:19drums. And you know, his motto is to make something every day, you know? So he makes these videos, um,
03:25and he, he's on Instagram, but he does drum stuff on there all the time. And his, this garage,
03:31which I grew up in playing drums, you know, is where he spends all his time. Does it look like
03:36a garage that has a drum set in it or does it actually look like a music room? It looks like
03:40a disaster. Like it, there's drum set in there, but it's, it's a complete, I'm surprised it's still
03:46standing. But this house means so much to Ken because he grew up there. And I think with you guys,
03:51we're going to make it so he can really be creative. He can really spend his son now as a
03:55musician. And so then he comes over and he brings his friends, but there's nobody more deserving.
04:00Is Ken home or do you have? I think he is home. I think what we should do is I think let's,
04:06I'll sneak into the, to the space and I'll, I'll just start beating the hell out of his drums
04:10and we'll see if he comes out. Here, pull over here. Here's his house.
04:14But we, aren't we trying to sneak up? Okay. Yeah. Stop. Stop. Stop. Okay.
04:18Let's go. Follow me. This is the house. You guys,
04:25I'm going to go in and I'll just start banging on his drums. Okay.
04:29Because he's here.
04:34Just go around. You're the best dressed sneaky spy I've ever seen.
04:38Come on. Follow me. Here, quick. I'll climb this tree onto the roof.
04:42Yeah. You do that and we'll see it next time.
04:44You guys, uh, hide under that table.
04:49No, go in the bushes or something. You guys come with me. So this is, this is the space and a cameraman,
04:55you know, don't get hurt because, so this is, wow. So I'm going to play, I'll play drums and then
05:02hopefully he'll, you know, he'll come out and, is this where you wanted us? Yes, but shh.
05:08John!
05:21What is this? Come on in!
05:25What is this?
05:36Come on in.
05:37What's with the camera?
05:38I got a big surprise for you.
05:40Hearing something come from your garage and then seeing John in there, it was shocking,
05:44but it was also great because every time I see John, I was just kind of grounded.
05:50How you doing, buddy?
05:51Good.
05:52This is Ken Hodder, everybody.
05:53I love you, buddy.
05:55I love you, too.
05:57Ken and I met, you know, when we were, you know, kids.
06:00I came over here a lot, and we could just sit here and talk.
06:04We've always just inspired each other, like, you know, and just gotten better at what we
06:07love by leaning on each other.
06:13We clicked it with music, really.
06:14You know, we were in marching band together, and what that did was that it gave us an identity.
06:19We were band geeks.
06:19We had a purpose, was to make music and to make people happy with our music.
06:24The reason why we're here is I know that this room means so much to you.
06:28You do, you know, you play here with your son, which is, you know, a legacy.
06:32I brought these guys.
06:33You may not recognize them.
06:36What's all that noise out here?
06:37Jonathan and Drew, how are you?
06:41Hey, how are you?
06:41Nice to meet you.
06:42Have you seen these guys ever on TV?
06:43Of course.
06:44We may not be great on the drums, but we are great at fixing up a space.
06:48This is where I hung out as a kid.
06:49We would come over, we'd play drums, we would do magic.
06:51When he comes, he would go straight into here, say hi to everybody in the house, and go right
06:55into here.
06:56John and I would work on things like drums, or, you know, like to do magic, anything nerdy.
07:03Jonathan is a magician.
07:05Mm-hmm.
07:06Really?
07:06Yeah.
07:07Wow.
07:07And so he was doing magic.
07:08That's how I met this guy.
07:10Here, Ken, catch this.
07:11Catch it.
07:12You see that?
07:12Oh, my goodness.
07:14Throw it over here.
07:15Throw it over here.
07:16Okay, there it is.
07:17You see that?
07:18You guys are such nerds.
07:19As most kids in high school might feel, I didn't feel too normal.
07:23I was always wondering if I was cool enough, or if I was, if I fit in.
07:28And that guy, for some reason, saw something in me that I didn't see.
07:33This is a special human being right here.
07:35We stayed best friends all this time, and we've grown so much, obviously, you know, in
07:41how many years?
07:4150 years we've known each other?
07:42Yeah.
07:43Yeah.
07:44You know, we would, I would come over, you know, some of the darkest times, for both
07:48of us, but, you know, I'd come to you, and we would just, uh, cry and spit out all
07:54our things, and, you know, it's going to be okay.
07:56He always, he just had a calm way of saying, it's going to be okay.
07:59And he was right.
08:00You know, we're both the same age.
08:02We're both going through different, you know, things in our life, divorce, death, but
08:06also we're there through the happy times.
08:08You know, I don't have anyone else in my life like that.
08:10And as you get older, like, your world just gets smaller and smaller and smaller.
08:13And the one constant, the one solid thing that I've had in my life, especially friendship-wise,
08:19has been Ken.
08:20We talk almost every day.
08:22We finally got to the point, I don't know, maybe five, ten years ago, when we say goodbye,
08:26we say, I love you.
08:27I love you, too.
08:27I love you.
08:28Yeah.
08:28You know, right?
08:28You finally say, I love you.
08:30Yeah.
08:30You've always thought it, but, you know.
08:32I've always loved him, but we never said it much, did we?
08:35No.
08:35Yeah, we do.
08:36It's not what we're doing.
08:37Yeah.
08:37Yeah.
08:38He, his motto is make something every day, right?
08:40When your father passed away, Ken stopped playing drums.
08:43He just stopped, he stopped making things every day.
08:45Yes.
08:46And it broke my heart because, you know, we've been doing this together.
08:50We've been partners in music for so long.
08:52Yeah.
08:52And, and you play.
08:53He was instrumental in me reconnecting because I kind of quit making things to try to interrupt
08:59feeling my father's loss.
09:01Yeah.
09:02And so, sadly, you have to quit everything emotionally.
09:05You can't just quit the good stuff, you know.
09:08What are some of your frustrations with this, and what have you always wanted to do?
09:11Well, I mean, I just wanted to record music in here.
09:13I used to have a band.
09:15Sometimes it would be a little too loud for neighbors, so that's one thing.
09:18On behalf of your neighbors, because I was standing on the side when he started playing.
09:22Yeah.
09:22Is it loud?
09:23Well, your AC unit has, it's not sealed around it there.
09:26No, it's not, right.
09:27Yeah, have you not, have you never had water come in there?
09:29Because it's just an open hole.
09:30Yeah, what happens when it rains?
09:31I know, that's the, that's, there's another one, the old one.
09:33I saw the big one that fell out.
09:34You saw that?
09:34Yeah.
09:35Whenever you have a band room, it needs to be soundproofed properly.
09:39Right.
09:39For the sake of your neighbors.
09:40Right.
09:41This space has the same problem all garages have, so it kind of needs sort of streamlining.
09:45Do you want it to be a cool music slash lounge space or a wicked awesome magic space?
09:53Because I'm open the line.
09:55I think you know the answer.
09:56John's always had this, this thing about him where he could understand what people need and,
10:03and he, and he was so happy to give it to them and, so in a way this garage thing makes sense
10:07to me, in a way it makes no sense at all.
10:09Thank you for doing this.
10:11You're welcome.
10:11No.
10:12Uh, surprise, this is like an enormous surprise, but not a surprise.
10:17I love you, baby.
10:18Yeah, I love you too.
10:18I take it there, but you're real happy.
10:20All right, get on out.
10:21All right.
10:22I never would have thought that that, that that space would be something so integral, but
10:26it is, and it's amazing that he thought of that.
10:31That's amazing.
10:32All right, let's talk about this space.
10:34Well, like I said, I'd love a cool looking room to make something, to make his drum beats,
10:39to, to do his Instagram stuff.
10:41Plus his family, you know, this is a great place for his kids.
10:44His, his son plays guitar.
10:45I gave his son a guitar, and so I think Ken really, you know, it just warms his heart to
10:50see his kid play, and so they play in here, and they just need a good hang, and I think
10:54we should get him a new drum set.
10:55But certainly we've got to start with soundproofing, because even just like, forget the neighbors.
10:59Like, it just sounds crappy in here.
11:00I was just playing these drums.
11:01I haven't done it for so many years, but it sounds terrible.
11:04And the ceiling seems, especially if you're a tall guy, right, like, can we raise this?
11:08Yeah, why is that boxed in?
11:09It's full height over here, John.
11:10Oh, yeah.
11:11We need to open up the space and make it bigger, for sure.
11:14What's the big thing that he needs here?
11:16Well, clearly storage.
11:17If we're going to expand this a little bit, let's try and make it so he has that functional
11:20storage to tuck things away, but it feels like a lounging space in a music room.
11:24Totally.
11:24And also, like, maybe sort of an office desk kind of, you know, situation where he could
11:29have his recording equipment close to the drums maybe or something, right?
11:32Oh, I do want to ask one question before we're done here.
11:34This outdoor area.
11:35Oh, yeah.
11:35Let's look at that.
11:36Do you think we should do a little something with that as well?
11:39So, yeah, this walking through here is just such a mess.
11:42Can you guys do something about this?
11:43You know what I have that he loves?
11:45I have a succulent wall at my house.
11:48Okay.
11:48Structure looks like it's in good shape.
11:50We need to just sand down, clean off all the paint.
11:52We need to sand it and do it and roll it out and buff it and do all the cottage cheese
11:57things.
11:58You sound like a pro.
11:59Thanks.
12:01What about a fire pit?
12:02Let's focus first on clearing it all out, and then we'll see what we have to work with.
12:07I need to find out what's underneath all of that.
12:09Yeah, it would be cool if it was, like, all one feel, right?
12:12A flow into the...
12:13Can you put a door, like...
12:15French doors?
12:15French doors there?
12:16Yeah.
12:16The light will come in.
12:17It'll make it feel bigger, and it's just nice to have a flow, especially if it's not
12:19just a music room.
12:20It's meant to be a lounging space.
12:22Yeah, speaking of doors, I want to see what is behind the garage door.
12:25Nice segue.
12:26Goodbye, guys.
12:27Thanks for coming over.
12:28Yeah.
12:31Oh, God.
12:32Oh, so he just has a tiny bit of storage in here.
12:35And a workshop.
12:36Does that even open all the way?
12:37All right, so we need to figure out the door situation.
12:40Wait, let's get the other side.
12:42Try this side.
12:45Do you guys have a medic that comes with this show?
12:47I do.
12:48Somebody's going to get hurt.
12:48We're going to get...
12:49We can't hurt a national treasure like Stamos.
12:53Yeah, please don't.
12:54So this is his workshop.
12:56Is this a...
12:56What is this?
12:57Table saw.
12:59Redoing this and giving it that fresh energy is going to give him fresh energy to create.
13:03You know, he stopped playing drums for 20 years, and it broke my heart because, you know,
13:07he's a drummer at heart.
13:08That's what we are.
13:09We're drummers.
13:10Do you actually have concerns?
13:11Do you want us to protect the hair?
13:13Yeah, wrap me in this.
13:14As you get older, your life just gets smaller and smaller.
13:17You know, your circle of friends, certainly.
13:19Ken is...
13:20He's just a guy who's always there.
13:21You know, he's just there.
13:23Which is...
13:24You know, you can't say that about a lot of people.
13:25This is how we protect the most valuable asset in Hollywood.
13:28Wait.
13:29No, no.
13:29The most valuable asset is up here.
13:30Oh, the hair.
13:31We just had to protect the hair.
13:33I didn't agree to this part.
13:35It's fine.
13:37Let's get this started right now.
13:41Are you ready?
13:41Are you ready?
13:43Whoa.
13:44Guys, why all the song when you could just, you know...
13:47That's a good way to do it, too.
13:50Yeah, that's fine.
13:50I mean, I like teasing them because they could take it, and they teased me right back.
13:54These guys, they were a little more difficult than the Olsen twins.
13:58I've got to be honest with you.
14:00All right, go over it.
14:01Bye, guys.
14:02Well, there's something magical about this garage, and I can still feel it as we're banging
14:12down the walls.
14:12We learn so much in this garage.
14:15You know, we practice our magic.
14:17We practice our drums.
14:18We practice photography.
14:19We develop film in this garage.
14:21So it holds a...
14:24It's part of my history as well.
14:25But to make it an easier place to create is what I'm hoping to do for him.
14:31Watch out.
14:32Watch out.
14:36Nice.
14:36It already feels like it's two times the size by tearing that wall down and, you know,
14:41opening it up.
14:42But getting light in there is going to be good, too.
14:49But it's kind of fun.
14:50I liked it.
14:51I'm going to go home and do it to my house now just for the heck of it.
14:54One, two, three.
14:59Drew, you're winning.
15:03Everything in the competition was brothers.
15:05Get a little lower.
15:06There we go.
15:07Keep going.
15:09That's an opening.
15:11And then we'll just cut to me as if I've done it all.
15:13Oh, quick.
15:13Yes.
15:14Give him the sledgehammer.
15:15Oh, quick.
15:15Take it.
15:16And...
15:16That was a tough one.
15:19You know what?
15:19We couldn't have done this without you.
15:21I know that.
15:22Hard work never came easy.
15:24Don't be sure to break down houtine.
15:26With the garage now almost completely prepped for construction, we've moved Ken and his family
15:30into a rental so they will not be tempted to peak once we get started.
15:34We've got to figure out what we're doing here, right?
15:36Well, it's a learning experience for me.
15:38And I like design a lot.
15:40We can do, like, French doors across here.
15:42What do they look like?
15:43Essentially just two panels.
15:44We'll have them open out.
15:45That way it doesn't affect furniture placement inside.
15:48Where...
15:48Can we put some succulent...
15:49Where would the succulent wall be like?
15:51Okay, so my thought was, how cool would it be if the succulent wall is over here on the
15:55perimeter block?
15:56We can have, like, random...
15:58Pot.
15:59Succulent pots.
15:59Yeah, built into the wall.
16:00Maybe clad it.
16:01I have a succulent wall at my house.
16:03How big is it?
16:03He loves it.
16:04Can I just steal the plants out of that?
16:06We can take some cuttings from it.
16:08It'd be nice to have some succulents there, just a place to hang.
16:11And then the idea of making the garage door open wide is really incredible, too.
16:16What about doing just kind of, like, bifold doors or something like that?
16:20Can you put windows in the doors?
16:22We could do an upper panel like that.
16:25Right.
16:25And then can this open up all the way?
16:27Yeah.
16:27When it's closed, it'll look nice.
16:29It'll be just a beautiful architectural door.
16:32And we'll make sure that it's insulated so that it's going to help sound dampen.
16:35I think they're going to make the most out of the space.
16:37So that's what's interesting to me to see.
16:40People can hang here.
16:42Yeah.
16:42Play music here.
16:43Put the drums, say, like, over here.
16:46I'd like just a little stage.
16:49Yeah.
16:49I think you'd think.
16:50This area here?
16:51Yeah.
16:52I mean, this is for the magic or for the music?
16:55Music.
16:55All right.
16:56And also, where are you going to put the storage?
16:58So we can do a whole wall of storage.
17:00So why don't we do along this whole wall here?
17:02This is all storage.
17:03That would bump things over a little bit.
17:04This whole, oh, this wall here.
17:06Yeah.
17:06What about lighting?
17:07He needs a good lighting system.
17:10We could put in fixtures where he could adjust the heads to wherever he wants them.
17:15And have it, it could still have, like, a cool vibe.
17:17Do it, like, maybe like a matte black steel or something like that.
17:20Oh, other things.
17:21That's good.
17:21Yeah.
17:22It's a great place to start now.
17:24Now the guys can get in there and really design it and really make it, you know, what we hope it can be.
17:30Making it all it can be starts by replacing the old garage doors with handcrafted folding doors
17:36that stand up to the weather without warping and allow natural light to stream into the space whenever Ken wants it.
17:43Inside, luxury vinyl plank flooring adds the warmth of wood with little to no maintenance,
17:47while up top will add a chic ceiling feature that will absorb and deflect sound.
17:51Sleek built-ins will bookend a porcelain-topped workstation that Ken can use to house video and edit gear for his drum videos.
17:58And we'll put in a brand-new drum set that John knows Ken has always wanted on a 6x6-foot riser.
18:05It'll create the perfect space for him to make music, host other musicians, and kick back with his kids.
18:10Outside, we'll replace that old, worn-out concrete with a new, stabilized gravel and paver patio
18:15and cover the cinder block wall with sleek, horizontal wood slats anchored by succulents.
18:21A fire pit and resort-worthy lounge furniture will complete the puzzle
18:24and give Ken the indoor-outdoor music-making zen-den that John says he has always dreamed of.
18:31One question. You always have this camera with you. What's the deal with the camera?
18:34I like to... Ken and I got into photography.
18:37If you would have told me when I was a kid coming over here playing drums
18:39that one day he's sledgehammering the place and redecorating for him, I just wouldn't have believed it.
18:45Do that... Yeah, that's handsome.
18:47That's good. That's gonna be nice.
18:50John Stamos says that you're handsome.
18:51You are handsome.
18:53That's good. Look over there again.
18:54He's always behind the scenes.
18:56You know, he's a photographer, so he's behind a camera.
18:59When he's a drummer, he's behind a drum set.
19:01I like it.
19:02It's amazing.
19:02It's gonna be nice.
19:03To make him the star has been really special.
19:07Should we get your brother's signature out here, too?
19:09No, we don't want to drop the value. We want to keep it nice and high like this.
19:12Oh, well...
19:14Perfect.
19:16Let me put some of this in your hair.
19:18I would recommend you don't do that.
19:19I donkey kick?
19:20This is great for your hair. This is great for your hair, man.
19:22You wanted to shave my chest.
19:24You wanted to shave my chest.
19:32We're not taking our foot off the gas, and even though John's away on tour with the Beach Boys this week, one thing is for certain.
19:39He will not recognize this place when he gets back.
19:42Anybody looking for some pebbles?
19:44Here it comes!
19:46Oh, boy!
19:47I haven't locked this one, you jerk!
19:49Well, you should be moving faster.
19:51This is gonna lock it in.
19:53That makes things complicated, Drew.
19:56Complicated, complicated.
19:58Do you want me to...
19:58Can you take this back out stone by stone?
20:02Uh, we can start to spread it down.
20:04I mean, it's gonna hold this down anyway.
20:06But it's gonna look great.
20:06I mean, it's small, but nice dining area, the lounging space.
20:09It's gonna be great.
20:10It's such a better use.
20:11And the aesthetic over there on that wall is gonna be so much better than what they had before.
20:15The flow and function of this whole area is gonna be great, but also you can shut the gate here and then just have that private access into the main house.
20:20Should we have moved this seating area over a little bit more so that the seating area and the fire pit are not between the two doors?
20:29So you have your access here and your access there.
20:31I mean, we could do that.
20:32We could leave a continuous pathway here, but then it's gonna change our pavers.
20:37You could leave the pavers where they are and everything, but I would have preferred to have the dining area to one side of the entrance,
20:43the fire pit to the other side of the entrance, and you have a straight path from here to here.
20:47We'll just go a little further back here.
20:49I mean, what's the difference?
20:50You're already dumping gravel where you're not supposed to dump gravel, so we could just undo.
20:54It's all good.
20:55At least there's a membrane on the bottom and we can just dump it out.
20:58Yeah.
20:59This, the pavers are fine there.
21:00Let me drop these pavers.
21:02No matter what, this area is gonna be fine, and then we'll figure this out.
21:05I'm gonna leave you for a few minutes to figure out what you need.
21:08My brain hurts!
21:08And I'll come back.
21:18Chase!
21:18How's it going?
21:20Drew!
21:21I'm doing well.
21:21How are you?
21:22Good to see you.
21:22Good to see you.
21:23So you got the idea that I sent over.
21:26John was saying that Ken loves the idea of a lounge space where they happen to make music.
21:30So you're gonna want some light in there.
21:32Yeah, I don't think we need massive windows.
21:34It's just, it's not a garage anymore, so I don't think a solid door is what we would want.
21:38Between these options, I don't think we need the three panes per panel.
21:43Okay, but you're gonna be playing drums in there, so it might be a good idea to use a laminate glass,
21:51which, in here, there's a rubber center, and that helps dampen sound.
21:56Okay.
21:57Instead of doing just a straight piece of glass, where that sound transfers through.
22:01No, that makes sense to me, absolutely.
22:04So we can go white laminate, we can go dark laminate, or we can do a mirror.
22:08The mirror.
22:09And we can go clear as well.
22:11Oh, my hair looks pretty good, actually.
22:12Yeah, you're looking good.
22:13Yeah, yeah, thanks.
22:14I think, you know, I think clear will make the most sense.
22:18Okay.
22:19For the door itself, so what type of wood is it?
22:21So it's a thermally modified ash.
22:23Okay.
22:24And that's what keeps all the warping down.
22:26That's what keeps everything stable, so you don't have to worry about your doors expanding and contracting.
22:31When you've got a bifold set up, every time a door expands, you've got to think about there's two doors connected to each other.
22:39Yeah.
22:39And two doors connected to each other, so if they start expanding, they're going to hit in the middle, right?
22:44And we can't have that.
22:45So we use thermally modified lumber to mitigate that.
22:48Right.
22:49When do you think you can get me these panels, and I don't think there's anything else you need to know from me, is there?
22:54Well, you probably want them tomorrow, right?
22:56I usually do, yeah.
22:57We can do that for you.
22:58I can't believe this is the first time I've been down to your shop.
23:01This is it.
23:02Yeah, this is it.
23:02I'm going to come more often.
23:03Yeah, we'll take care of you.
23:04Stop by, Drew.
23:05All right.
23:05You can sleep there all you want, but I'm also practicing all night.
23:10I'm already getting emotional.
23:11Come on in.
23:13Whoa.
23:14That's a little different.
23:15John Stamos did all this.
23:17Yeah.
23:18No?
23:18Yeah.
23:18Yeah.
23:31Oh, it's John.
23:38How's my hair?
23:39I've got to look good for him.
23:42Hello.
23:43Oh, hello, sir.
23:45I'd like to point out, before Drew answered the phone, he said, I've got to make sure my hair looks good if it's John.
23:50Yeah, of course.
23:51How's it look?
23:52Yeah, well, he's a beach boy now, and you're not.
23:54But, yeah, actually, did I tell you that?
23:56No.
23:56I got on stage with John and the Beach Boys, and I got to sing.
24:00I didn't know all the words to Barbara Ann.
24:03That's, like, one of the most classic Beach Boys songs.
24:06I was a Kokomo guy.
24:07You could have come up on Kokomo.
24:08I don't want to stop you.
24:10How's it going?
24:11You checking in to make sure we're working?
24:13Yeah, are you guys?
24:14Because you don't look like it.
24:15I mean, there's a lot happening here.
24:18I'm sorry I can't breathe.
24:19I had a doctor's thing and a foot thing, but I'm here.
24:22It's all right.
24:22I mean, I know you were touring with the boys as well, but hold on.
24:25Let's show you this.
24:26One sec.
24:27Let me see.
24:28I'm, oh, my God.
24:29So the built-ins, full height cabin on that side.
24:32This will be the countertop all across here.
24:34One thing you can't see on the surface, but inside the walls,
24:38we put a sound panel behind all of the drywall.
24:41It basically kills the acoustic transfer.
24:43So the neighbors here are going to be very, very happy
24:46that this is a soundproof box, essentially.
24:49I love it.
24:49I love it.
24:50It looks, it's already amazing.
24:51You can see the thickness of it.
24:53This is quite dense.
24:54It's quite heavy as well.
24:55Actually, both this and this are quite dense.
24:59Clap.
24:59Let me hear the sound.
25:01Yeah.
25:04Actually, it's doing a good job.
25:06Here's my question, though.
25:07Can you, can someone do a celebrity eye on you to my house?
25:10We, I, we'll, we'll see.
25:12After this, I'll have a talk with your wife.
25:14You're handy now.
25:16You can handle it.
25:17Not after she sees what's going on there.
25:19I mean, I, I'll show you, if we have time, I'll show you holes that I put in walls that I've never patched up.
25:25I can't, I can't, I got light bulbs that don't work.
25:27Although I hung all this stuff back here.
25:30See those guitars?
25:31Yeah, nicely done.
25:32I put that whole rig up there because I didn't, because this is all soundproof.
25:35This is a studio.
25:36And so I put that, do you see that thing up there?
25:39I think it's funny, it's almost like you're trying to impress Jonathan to me how, how handy you are.
25:43You, you're already impressing us.
25:45Yeah, yeah, so what do you, what do you think?
25:46Is there anything else you want us to focus on?
25:48Well, make sure it has that lounge vibe because I know, like, I think the most important thing he does is spend time with his family, with his kids, you know?
25:56And I know that summer's coming up and they're going to be off school and they're going to be around a lot.
26:00People are going to come over here and they're probably never going to want to leave.
26:02Yeah, right, right.
26:03We have a couple of questions for you.
26:05We want to go over the acoustic paneling.
26:07Yeah, ceiling.
26:07So we have this beautiful ceiling detail now, but we can clad that.
26:12We can put something in there that's going to really knock it, like, to the next level for style.
26:17We could have these as those square acoustic panels.
26:20Jonathan, I don't think that's the best.
26:22The wood slats are nice because they have felt in between them.
26:26It reverbs a little bit, but then, you know, knocks it down a touch, too.
26:30That, um, that vibe is really cool.
26:33This one?
26:34Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
26:35Yeah, it has a cool, rustic vibe, and I like the shape, too.
26:38It kind of adds a bit more personality.
26:39Okay.
26:40Anything else you need from us?
26:41You know, I talked to Ken the other day.
26:43He hasn't seen anything.
26:44He goes, I just can't believe what you guys are doing for me and my family.
26:47He couldn't even wrap his head around it, you know?
26:50Like, nothing like this has happened to this guy.
26:52He's the guy who's always been in the back.
26:54He's always let me shine.
26:55This is the greatest gift that you could help me give someone ever, and I love you guys.
27:00Yeah, thanks, man.
27:01You're welcome.
27:01If you want to give me another chance, I can come back, and I'll—I need the redemption
27:04tour with the Beach Boys.
27:07I'm going through the canyon.
27:08I'm losing you guys.
27:11All right, I'll see you later.
27:12See you.
27:12Bye.
27:13Bye.
27:13Why do I have to walk backwards?
27:26Because it's the harder way, and I'm older.
27:29You're a thing of beauty.
27:30Look at that color with the wall.
27:32That's so nice.
27:35Instead of finishing these last few pieces, we could wax that little spot right there.
27:41Yeah.
27:41Because this glue grabs everything.
27:43Is it good?
27:43Yeah.
27:44Don't get this on your clothes.
27:46Is this enough?
27:46Yep, that's more than enough.
27:47That's great.
27:48Just adds a little more interest to the space.
27:52Let me put some of this in your hair.
27:54I would recommend you don't do that.
27:55This is great.
27:56I donkey kick.
27:56This is great for your hair.
27:57This is great for your hair, man.
27:59You wanted to shave my chest.
28:01How does it fit?
28:01It's a little tight, but it's not from you.
28:03The last piece to get in here is going to be snug.
28:05It's always the last piece that gets you, but I would use this in my hair.
28:10We should do our own products, but not house products.
28:14Enough of that already.
28:15I actually did do a campaign for a hair product.
28:17You did?
28:17Yeah, years ago.
28:18Who did you get to do the actual hair stuff?
28:20You?
28:21I had a hair double.
28:22You did?
28:23They actually tried to book you, but you weren't available.
28:25That's true.
28:28I ruined my shirt.
28:30You ruined your shirt?
28:31Don't.
28:31Damn it.
28:33Um, don't worry.
28:34We'll auction it off and buy you a new shirt.
28:39Okay.
28:40Can you hurry up?
28:42It's precarious.
28:44Do you need help?
28:44Call the other brother.
28:45Get the other brother.
28:46Get the other brother here.
28:47Get the other brother.
28:47Dude, look at your beautiful craftsmanship.
28:51That is beautiful.
28:52Um, I like, I like, yeah, even though this is not technically an acoustic panel, the shape
28:59of the ceiling does quite a bit to, you know, deflect the sound around, but every surface
29:03from the ceiling to the walls has soundboard underneath the drywall, so that will deaden
29:08any of the sound transfer to the outside.
29:10Right, right, right.
29:11It's pretty wild.
29:12It's beautiful.
29:12Dude, we tell him I cut each one of these pieces.
29:15Yeah, yeah, exactly.
29:16You hand-sawed the tree down.
29:18You need to go fix that shirt.
29:20Me?
29:21You do.
29:22Let's get some club soda on that.
29:24You see that?
29:25He just wants to put it in a place so he can just show.
29:27Can you guys?
29:27Did you guys check?
29:28Did you see that?
29:29I knew it was going to happen.
29:30I actually might, I think I just came up with a new nickname for you.
29:33Go ahead.
29:34John Stainmost.
29:35Get out of my house.
29:37Three, two, one, go!
29:41La, la, la, la, la.
29:42Let's go, let's go.
29:45I'm trying to look at changing the world from my bedroom.
29:55I have a succulent wall at my house, and Ken loves it.
30:00Oh, yeah.
30:00So this is going to be a good one.
30:01So he's never had his own, but he's always loved yours.
30:03No, he loves plants, and he loves stuff like this.
30:08What's shaking?
30:08I'll take this one.
30:10Deceivingly heavy chair coming through.
30:11How heavy is it?
30:13Oh, my God.
30:13Try and pick that up.
30:14Here, give me your light little thing there.
30:16Go ahead.
30:16Give that a pull.
30:18That is heavier than it looks like.
30:19It does not look that heavy.
30:20But is this a rocking thing?
30:21Yeah.
30:21How cool is that?
30:23Have you ever had a celebrity come in and do something for their friends, but then taken
30:27this stuff for themselves?
30:29We've had many try.
30:30A couple.
30:30Yeah.
30:31Your home is your base, and it really is, you know, becomes who you are.
30:35He grew up in this house.
30:36His whole life he's been here.
30:37His parents passed away and left the house to him.
30:39These are the best drums made, by the way.
30:41And that's all I play.
30:42You know, obviously, it really moved me to be back in that space again.
30:47Here's a question.
30:48Go ahead.
30:48When you're drumming.
30:49Yes.
30:50Like, most instruments, like playing the guitar, I've got this hand, this hand going,
30:53and I can groove up.
30:54But you have to, like, split your brain when you're drumming, right?
30:58Because you have to use your foot for the one, and then you're using.
31:01Okay, okay.
31:02Hold on.
31:03It just, it seems to me like you have to be an inhuman, like, level artist to be able
31:09to do your feet separately, keep one pace with one hand, another with another.
31:12Are you left-handed?
31:13I'm left-handed.
31:14That's good, though.
31:14Try that.
31:15So, play, um.
31:16I always do, I always cross arms.
31:18Is that what you're supposed to do?
31:18No.
31:19Oh.
31:19Bop, bop, bop, bop, bop, bop, bop.
31:22This?
31:22No.
31:26Let's get the other brother in.
31:27Oh, I'm the musically talented brother, just so you know.
31:30Is that the case?
31:32My fantasy of becoming an actor or a musician was all started there, you know?
31:37And so to be, to go back to that space and feel that energy was very special.
31:43Can I spend the night in here, and then I'll wake up, I'll go get them.
31:46You do whatever you want to do.
31:47Hey, John, you can sleep there all you want, but I'm also practicing all night.
31:57I'll see you guys tomorrow.
31:59Yeah, I'll see you tomorrow.
31:59So, how are you feeling, man?
32:04Are you nervous?
32:05A little.
32:07I'm not going to spoil anything, but you are absolutely not going to believe.
32:11You're about to see.
32:12I mean, we've been working hard on this.
32:14The boys did some work.
32:15I did most of it.
32:16Okay.
32:17What do you think it's going to be?
32:19I was just hoping for something comfortable.
32:21It's, it's not comfortable.
32:24Okay.
32:25You did want the stripper pole, too, right?
32:27Because we got that in.
32:30You know, you've always been there for me.
32:32You've always been my rock, my Buddha, my Yoda, I always say.
32:36Like, and we've been there for each other.
32:38I mean, we've both been through death and divorce and, you know.
32:42But we're through it now.
32:43And this is the, this is like the pod at the end of the rainbow, I think.
32:47And, you know, there was a time when, you know, I was worried about you.
32:50And I was like, when was the last time you played drums?
32:53And you hadn't played drums for like, since your, 20 years.
32:56Since your dad died.
32:57Since my dad died, yeah.
32:58And I was like, you got to get back on that drum kit.
33:01I know.
33:02Because, A, you're a talented musician.
33:03But, two, it's, music is our life.
33:05Music is our, that's what keeps us going.
33:07I know.
33:07Without music, life would be a mistake.
33:09This thing is, um,
33:10largely important to me because of Apollo.
33:14Uh-huh.
33:15Yeah.
33:15Do you feel like this is, will bring you guys even closer together?
33:19I think so.
33:20I think music already did that.
33:21But, I mean, he and I have both been sort of, um,
33:23a little listless without our space.
33:26Right.
33:26Right.
33:27Which I hadn't realized how important that space was.
33:29Like, that's sort of the other thing about that space is that
33:32I didn't realize how important it was.
33:35Until you didn't have it.
33:36Yeah.
33:37Here we go.
33:39You ready?
33:40Yeah.
33:40Oh, wow.
33:42Good, man.
33:43Welcome home.
33:45Are you ready for this, bro?
33:47I am.
33:48I've been, this is built up.
33:49I'm ready.
33:50The gratitude that I have, people just don't do this kind of thing.
33:53Are they a million pictures of me?
33:54Because they're all of him.
33:55Well, that's what he requested to have in the design,
33:57a million pictures of him.
33:58So much has changed in here.
34:00It's crazy.
34:01How many years have you been playing in here?
34:03Your whole life?
34:04My whole life, yeah.
34:05Yeah.
34:05Yeah.
34:05How is it you haven't even turned around to see the biggest space?
34:08Look at this.
34:08Look at this.
34:10Oh, my God.
34:11Do you remember your garage door before?
34:13Oh, my God.
34:15I have never seen a garage door like this.
34:18Did John Stamos do this?
34:20He did do it.
34:21Every single thing.
34:22So he showed up.
34:24I think John thought he was maybe just going to be here,
34:26smile, and tell us what to do.
34:27But no, we're like, you're getting dirty.
34:29Well, Ken is, you know, he's just the most selfless person I've ever been in my life.
34:33We've been friends for what, 50 years?
34:35Yeah, something like almost 50, yeah.
34:38You don't get friends like this.
34:39I'm already getting emotional because, yeah.
34:43Yeah.
34:48Do you know how much you mean to this guy?
34:50I know.
34:51We were talking about it.
34:52He always made me feel validated.
34:55So this is, in a way, not such a surprise.
34:59Just meaning the whole thing.
35:00You guys are a surprise.
35:01Yeah.
35:02But luckily, I get this guy all the time, you know?
35:05As much as you say you're lucky to have him in your life,
35:08all he has said nonstop this entire time
35:10is how lucky he is to have you in his corner
35:12and how much you mean to it, to be honest.
35:14And having a fresh space can give you a fresh lease.
35:19It's on everything.
35:20Yep.
35:21You want to see inside?
35:21Yeah, I do.
35:22I'm so curious about this.
35:23Before we even go inside, there's a little surprise out here.
35:27Oh, really?
35:28Okay.
35:28Come on over.
35:29To have a new space to live in and breathe in and create in,
35:33it's boundless.
35:35Like, you know, there's nothing holding you back.
35:38Right.
35:39All right.
35:40Come on in.
35:42Whoa.
35:43This is perfect.
35:46All right.
35:48Come on in.
35:49Whoa.
35:50A little different.
35:51John Stamos did all this.
35:53Yeah.
35:53Yeah.
35:54Whoa.
35:56This is perfect.
35:57Look.
35:58I love these French doors.
35:59French doors with Italian handles.
36:01Beautiful.
36:02Wow.
36:02I literally took a sledgehammer to this wall.
36:06When you enter that space, you see beautiful green wall,
36:09just the rocks.
36:10It's very zen-like, isn't it?
36:12Totally.
36:13It's nice to have the connectivity the way that we have now
36:15between the main house and the garage.
36:17Definitely.
36:18It's never had so much symmetry in the beautiful black walls
36:21that bookend this thing here.
36:23Yeah, the dark stain.
36:24You got your vertical garden over there as well.
36:26This was my idea, the succulents.
36:28I know you like.
36:29Yeah.
36:29Remember how I have that at my house?
36:30At your house, yeah.
36:31Before, you couldn't even walk down here.
36:33It was all overgrown.
36:34What do you think?
36:34I love it.
36:37I need these.
36:38And they're like, no, they're Ken's.
36:40So you can actually light this.
36:41It is a working fire pit.
36:43Wow.
36:43The tank is hidden in that little side table.
36:45Is it really?
36:46Oh, so it goes here like this?
36:48Yeah, underground.
36:48I'm going to come back tonight.
36:49Do you mind?
36:50No.
36:51You always want.
36:51Because I want to see that fire thing work.
36:54Well, this is an amazing space,
36:56and I think it's going to be great for family gathering.
36:58But this is only the appetizer.
37:00Okay, yeah.
37:01The main course is in there.
37:02Let's get it.
37:02You ready?
37:03Yeah.
37:04I'm not sure I'm ready, but...
37:05After you.
37:06Whoa.
37:07Oh, my God.
37:10Whoa.
37:12Can you believe it?
37:13This is not real.
37:14Oh, my goodness.
37:16It exceeds all expectations.
37:18When I walked in there, I saw the drum set.
37:21But the place kind of made me dizzy
37:23because I've been going in there my whole life,
37:26and I felt like I was somewhere else.
37:28Everything was so perfect.
37:30You know, it feels like home.
37:32Look at this drum set.
37:33Whoa.
37:34That's yours.
37:35That's beautiful.
37:36What do you think of the riser?
37:37Is that a must?
37:38Is that great?
37:38Yeah, I love it.
37:39I've never seen anything like that.
37:40It totally makes sense.
37:42It actually makes it like its own stage.
37:44But, I mean, it's on wheels, too.
37:45So you can lock it.
37:46You can use it.
37:47You can roll it.
37:48You can take it right out the carriage doors.
37:49When was the last time he had a new drum set?
37:51How many years ago?
37:52Like 1978.
37:53Play the Hata.
37:54He invented this lick that I do all the time with the Beach Boys.
37:57Oh, this is amazing.
38:08Yeah, they're beautiful.
38:09Can I borrow them?
38:10Of course.
38:12It's just beautiful.
38:13I mean, it's the gift of music and of love and friendship.
38:19And, you know, it's pretty cool.
38:23Knowing this guy, you know, my whole life has just been a gift.
38:27And, like I said before, it's no surprise.
38:29But it's always overwhelming.
38:32Imagine being this guy's friend, you know.
38:34You might think, oh, he's handsome and this, that.
38:36But this guy, John, has always been there for me.
38:41Always validated me.
38:43Always selfless.
38:45It's not an act.
38:46It's just been this way, you know, our whole lives.
38:49I haven't seen him this emotional since...
38:51Never.
38:52I don't think I've ever seen him.
38:53Okay.
38:55Amazing.
38:56What do you think of the sound in here?
38:58It's wonderful.
38:59Yeah, of course, that was a worry of mine.
39:01But it's wonderful.
39:02It's diffusing like it's supposed to diffuse.
39:04That window that the neighbors hated, that was basically just a gap where the air conditioning
39:08unit used to be.
39:09This is obviously sealed up.
39:10You have better insulation in here.
39:12And the ceiling as well as the walls.
39:13And even the carriage door is extra insulation.
39:16Is this functional for you, having all the storage and the desk top?
39:19Yeah, that's perfect.
39:20Well, I broke that.
39:22Look at these.
39:23I mean, this is top quality.
39:25Look at this.
39:26This, I thought they...
39:27I thought it was fake, like that they painted it or something.
39:29But that's...
39:29Feel that.
39:30That's real...
39:31Solid stone.
39:31Solid stone.
39:32Oh, wow.
39:32You...
39:33And also, it's a stone that's never going to stain.
39:35So if you ever did have wine or a beer or something out here and you spill it, doesn't matter.
39:39Photographic things.
39:40Yeah.
39:40And that is a TV.
39:42That's a TV.
39:42It's not just art.
39:43I thought that was a picture.
39:45And when you're not using it as a TV, you just use it as art.
39:48Look at this.
39:48Look at this.
39:49I know.
39:49I love this roofing.
39:51It just has a different aesthetic than your typical kind of wood slat ceiling.
39:54Right.
39:55This space is so beautiful.
39:57It's so much more than a music space.
40:00You know, it's a sitting space.
40:01It's a living space.
40:02Talking about making things and art.
40:05Yeah, I didn't want to do just the studio.
40:06Like, it had to be more of a vibe that we could hang out.
40:09Kids, I would have never expected this.
40:12And it's so functional.
40:13Those curtains are so wise because recording in here, music, those will help dampen down things.
40:19Take the whole wall.
40:21Cover the whole wall with that.
40:22Yeah.
40:22I love this.
40:23I mean, I can't wait to use this.
40:25This lighting situation is cool.
40:27Oh, yeah.
40:27On your phone, you can control all these lights on your phone, change the colors, change the brightness.
40:32And see, we aim them towards the drums.
40:35Give us something sexy, Drew.
40:37I mean, that's pretty sexy to me.
40:39Yeah.
40:39No, this is jazzy.
40:40Even sexier?
40:41Okay, hold on.
40:41Sexier.
40:42There, that's bold.
40:43That's hot.
40:44Isn't that cool, Ken?
40:45I didn't even know that.
40:45We can put them all on the drums.
40:47Yeah.
40:48I'm just so excited for him to live, you know, in that space with his family and make music
40:53and make his videos and record and, you know, invite people over.
40:58I want to open those doors up and just, like, block party.
41:02Right?
41:03Check this out.
41:04Your carriage doors.
41:06We got to have a block party.
41:07And then, I mean, if you're going to have the carriage doors open, you want to have the
41:10people to party with.
41:11Come on over, guys.
41:12Tell me what you want.
41:13How cool is this space?
41:18Come on in.
41:19Come on in.
41:22Music to my kids is so important.
41:25I feel like it's important to their mental health.
41:29Look at this.
41:29We got a new drum set.
41:31Oh, thank God.
41:32Right?
41:33He always does this.
41:35He always makes not just me feel special, but he makes people feel special.
41:40From 1 to 10, how much better is this than it was before?
41:44A 10.
41:45A 14.
41:45A 14,000.
41:47A 14,000, right?
41:48I'm at a place where, like, I've been given too much.
41:50My life is overflowing with goodness, and so any chance that I get to share it with someone,
41:55especially someone I love, is so special.
41:58You can change the lights.
41:59You can set the tone.
42:01Oh, my God.
42:02Whatever you need.
42:02Who's going to get the most out of this?
42:09I'm just so thankful to not only John, but to everybody that made this.
42:14But mostly John.
42:14I mean, it's the twins did a little bit, but.
42:20Just kidding.
42:21Yeah.
42:22I mean, they wanted me to fix up the Olsen twins' house.
42:31Is that the beat you want to do?
42:33Whatever you want to do.
42:34We're not going to kiss.
42:37I know that.
42:38We have.
42:41No.
42:42I love you, Ken.
42:43I love you, too.
42:50Woo!
42:51Yeah!
42:53Good night, Los Angeles!
42:54Thank you, Los Angeles!
