A 26 ans, Jane Goodall débarque en Tanzanie sur l’invitation du célèbre paléontologue Louis Leakey pour étudier les chimpanzés dans leur habitat naturel. Pour la jeune aventurière au tempérament bouillonnant, c’est un rêve qui devient réalité. Sans aucune expérience, formation ni bagage scientifique (« un esprit ouvert, la passion de la connaissance, l’amour des animaux et une patience monumentale » sont les seuls prérequis), Jane se lance corps et âme dans l’étude du comportement des primates. National Geographic envoie Hugo van Lawick, spécialiste de la vie sauvage, filmer un portrait de cette femme hors du commun. Il dirige sa caméra tant sur elle que sur les chimpanzés. L’histoire d’amour qui naît entre Jane et Hugo transparaît dans les images qui touchent au sublime et reflètent la naïveté et l’innocence des années ’60. Ce n’est qu’en 2014 que ce trésor cinématographique sera retrouvé dans les archives de National Geographic : plus de 100 heures de matériel en 16 mm, lumineux et plein de tendresse.
