00:00So in my head, I think I'm Meryl Streep dancing on that jetty. You don't think you're Pierce Brosnan?
00:06No, but I think I'm more Julie Walters singing when she's in that bar after that man
00:12If you change your mind, I'm the first in line. Honey, I'm still free. Take a chance on me.
00:20You see, I think that's probably realistically more of my range
00:30Honey, I'm still free. Take a chance on me.
00:34In the hillside hamlet of Korkini on the romantic island of Corfu...
00:40There's something about Corfu that makes you frisky. Look at Shirley Ballantyne.
00:45Look at Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia. Free husband, she had. I just want one.
00:51Alan and I are taking our chances on a beast of a project.
00:56Someone's written, keep out, and it's in blood.
01:00With the help of our expert builders... Be honest with us.
01:03Do you think we've made a mistake with this house?
01:06We're turning this neglected wreck into a beautiful holiday home.
01:10We have never had a sea view before. That view is worth it.
01:14I am like living a dream. To be in Corfu building a house with Alan is just brilliant.
01:20So far, we've cleared the building and ripped out the poo pipe.
01:24Going backwards.
01:26And it's time to tackle the biggest space in the house.
01:29The living and dining room.
01:31And so it begins, Mr Carr.
01:34But I am feeling a bit more confident, a bit more upbeat.
01:38I think we can do this.
01:40What are we going to do about your flag?
01:41Just... Can you just stop looking at them?
01:43Just concentrate on this.
01:44I'm concentrating.
01:45Stop it. Just get this sorted, please.
01:47Well, this has to come down.
01:49Definitely.
01:50Because that's pointless.
01:51What I keep seeing that's actually fashionable, bear with me.
01:55You take this down, but have the separation between the two and then this could be a lounge.
02:00I'm brimming with ideas.
02:01I've made a mood board for the living dining space and it's going to be all neutrals, but it's got to
02:08have the wow factor because it's going to be the biggest room in the house.
02:11So what style are we going to have it?
02:13Is it rustic or is it going to be white?
02:15It's pale pastels.
02:17Because if we keep this wall nicely exposed with all this off, look, once this is repointed,
02:23these colours are perfect on my mood board.
02:27Yeah.
02:27I keep seeing that.
02:28Amanda mentions, oh, my mood board.
02:32I haven't seen this mood board.
02:34It's a bit like the Beast of Bodmin, a Loch Ness.
02:36I've heard it exists, but I've never seen it.
02:39If it's like a family home, maybe the kids can have their own area.
02:43Or put something, because you know we're so near the beach,
02:45you've got something to put like all your inflatables and your...
02:48I love that.
02:49Inflatables.
02:49Inflatables.
02:50Yeah.
02:51Shall I tell you where my mood board is?
02:53Here.
02:54It's all filed away in there.
02:57You've heard of AI?
02:59AL.
03:00And then we come here and then this is dining area.
03:03Dining, yeah.
03:05Maybe like a little bonquette seating there.
03:07That's a very good idea.
03:09Well, I like bonquette.
03:10Did we have bonquette in the last row?
03:11No, because I vetoed it.
03:13That's what I thought.
03:14But this lends itself to that.
03:17Alan's always wanted to do a bonquette and actually,
03:20in the dining room, I think a bonquette is the best thing.
03:25That was a fly.
03:26That wasn't my reaction to Alan's bonquette.
03:28Do you know what?
03:28This is the thing with renovation.
03:30I am learning more and more and do not yank my...
03:34That's enough.
03:35The joke's over now.
03:36We love you, Grease.
03:38Before we do anything, we need to get that wall down.
03:41So, I've called on our local project manager, Stamatis, to help.
03:46So, we take this, which is the difficult part.
03:48Wicked.
03:49I can't wait to knock that wall down, because I think it's just dictating
03:53the whole feel of the room.
03:54It's oppressive.
03:56And I just think, just get it out.
03:58Get rid.
04:00Can I start up here?
04:01Yeah.
04:11Oh!
04:12Oh!
04:13You're going to go!
04:13I might do a bit of that.
04:18Can you do that?
04:21Let's do it.
04:22Oh!
04:23Something popped.
04:24Is it your hip, Alan?
04:26No, I think it's somewhere else.
04:28No.
04:32Well done.
04:32Push it.
04:33Oh!
04:37Oh, my God!
04:38Can you do the splits?
04:39I can go that way.
04:41That's amazing.
04:42Thanks, babe.
04:43Look at this!
04:49Looks different now, eh?
04:50It's so much lighter, isn't it?
04:52It's huge.
04:53It's got really lovely energy here, isn't it?
04:55It really has.
04:55It feels like a big hug.
05:05Before work starts this morning, Amanda and I are taking advantage of our proximity to the beach.
05:10All right.
05:11All right.
05:12Yes.
05:12I need inflatable, inflatable.
05:15Of course.
05:16One for boy and then one for girl.
05:18Boy and girl.
05:20I do like a crazy inflatable.
05:23I mean, there has been times when I've spent a whole holiday just floating on a pair of giant Mick Jagger lips.
05:29She loves pink, flamingo.
05:31Yeah, so that would be lovely.
05:33This is small for you.
05:35Not for me.
05:36I can't fit in there.
05:37We make a good price.
05:38I'd like to feel the quality, you know?
05:41You see, I don't know if I'd be able to get in here.
05:45See, it's a bit too...
05:46Oh!
05:48It's good.
05:49It's good.
05:50I like it.
05:52So we've got flamingo.
05:54Oh, that's good.
05:55This is like me with a hangover.
05:5830.
06:00Thank you so much.
06:01Thank you very much.
06:01Now I've got to walk through Cassiope with a dead unicorn.
06:04I bring the packet flamingo.
06:06OK.
06:08Bye-bye.
06:15North of the island is Akaravi Beach,
06:17one of the few sandy beaches on Corfu and stretching across seven kilometres.
06:22It's also the longest.
06:29Look what I got.
06:31Oh, no.
06:32Yes.
06:33We can't be on the beach with that.
06:35Yes, we can. We're in Greece.
06:37Let's put it here so we get a bit in the shade.
06:39Face in the shade, body in the sun.
06:42What is your actual skin tone?
06:44Because I've never ever seen it.
06:47Is it beige?
06:48In the summer, tangerine dreams is what I like.
06:51Oh.
06:52Because I've never actually seen you out of drag, have I?
06:54No, never.
06:55I always think I look like Ross Kemp when I don't wear my lashes.
06:58Oh, please.
06:58You are gorgeous without makeup.
07:00Yeah, but he's... I love him.
07:02But when I've got no makeup on and no lashes on...
07:05Oh, my God, he brought...
07:06Yes, I've got a unicorn.
07:11He said, pop a straw in.
07:12Pop a straw in?
07:14Yeah.
07:23Rubbish.
07:27Oh, for God's sake, I'm putting in my blood.
07:29I'm sick of that stupid thing.
07:31Do you remember taking food to the beach when you were a kid?
07:37Oh, my God.
07:37And having sand in your egg sandwich, and you'd be like, oh, no.
07:41My nan-grandad used to make salad sandwiches that were limp and warm
07:45by the time you ate them, but I still crave those sandwiches.
07:49Yeah.
07:49That is one of my biggest childhood tastes.
07:53Yeah.
07:54I'm going to put a little bit of cream on your neck, Alan,
07:56because you're burning a little bit.
07:59You've got very rubbery ears.
08:00Very flexible look.
08:02You know what they say?
08:04No.
08:06I don't know what they say, Alan.
08:07What do they say?
08:11Flexible ears.
08:12Let's go for a dip.
08:13Yeah.
08:14After cooling off in the Ionian Sea,
08:18it's straight back to work.
08:20Stamatis and I are making plans for the new space.
08:26So, even though we've taken down the wall...
08:29We need enough space for people to sit on the table, yeah.
08:31To sit on the table.
08:34But there's no sign of Alan.
08:38And then I was thinking a big sofa that comes along here
08:43and along there, so it divides...
08:44OK, like an L. L's.
08:47Like an L.
08:47Yeah, yeah, OK.
08:48Yeah.
08:49Yeah, I think it's going to look nice.
08:50Hi, guys.
08:52Oh!
08:53Hi.
08:54Hi.
08:54Where have you been?
08:55Do you know what?
08:56I was upstairs.
08:57Did you have a nap?
08:58No, I never had a nap, but, you know, I struggle in the heat
09:01and there was...
09:01The further you got the ill, the more breeze.
09:04You got sleepy.
09:06OK.
09:06Yeah, I did nod off.
09:07Just a little nod off.
09:08Just a little nana-nap.
09:10Now I'm raring a go and I can't wait to do some DIY.
09:13OK.
09:15Good.
09:16Today we want to see if the stone walls underneath the old layers of plaster
09:20will be good enough to leave exposed.
09:24OK.
09:24You're good at this, aren't you?
09:26I like this.
09:27I think this is too heavy for you.
09:28Is it?
09:29Yes.
09:29Don't be sexist.
09:31I'll have to show him differently.
09:33I think the master is underestimating me.
09:36But, you know, my favourite position is being underestimated.
09:40Oh, phew.
09:42I'm enjoying myself.
09:44I like to get the whole section good, so I get all the concrete, all the plaster,
09:48and then I can see where the old cement is, and then I go to the next section.
09:51Yeah, I'm more scattergun.
09:55I'm like, I'm paintballing in there.
09:56Poof, phew, phew, phew, phew, phew.
09:57Poof, phew, dugga, dugga, dugga, yeah.
10:01Eat lead!
10:05Ooooooh.
10:06I know.
10:07What do you reckon?
10:08are you impressed sometimes we take out the stones and doesn't look right you know yeah but here i
10:13think it's going to look nice but this is history someone's made this i think it'd be nice to like
10:18expose these three walls alan i think i need another siesta so i will see you in four hours
10:33it's been all hands on deck at the house with new ceiling beams going in
10:37and with the plaster gone from all the walls they're getting a jet wash makeover
10:45but today it's also alan's birthday so i'm whisking him off to one of my favorite greek islands
10:52pack sauce
10:59look at that
10:59whoo happy birthday thank you to get there it's a quick 11 kilometer jaunt from the southern tip of
11:08corfu across the ionian sea
11:15for your 50th next year what are we thinking because obviously in the back of my head i've
11:19been planning your 50s since you were 46. it hasn't been in the back of your head you've been quite
11:22vocal haven't you alan this will be perfect alan top this send me emails alan perfect for your 50s get
11:30it booked now do you want me to help you yeah yeah but i mean you're wishing my life away oh i'm excited
11:37the venetians ruled the ionian islands in the 14th to 18th centuries and paxos still carries their
11:47legacy in its architecture and traditions definitely see the italian influence oh my gosh yeah
11:53it's so lovely do you want a birthday ice cream yeah well isn't this adorable thank you thank you
12:11only 30 square kilometers in size the island is nicknamed the jewel of the ionian and is voted most
12:18instagrammable destination in the whole of greece oh wow i love you oh thank you lovely
12:29bloody hell at them what i've got it everywhere see god you see i'm getting old now and i need
12:34you basically i am turning into your carer well you've been 49 for one day
12:40legend has it paxos was greek god poseidon's gift of love to his sea queen amphitheatery
12:46oh thank you so much oh for my wife oh thank you oh how sweet is that
12:56why is the water clearer in greece than anywhere else now why does it make you want to jump in
13:02i so want to jump in you would never wear a speedo though i wish i had that confidence to wear a speedo
13:09but i'm more of a shorts person and maybe a little pashmina over the top or something you know
13:13so that is the thing about getting older the more fearless you are as you go into your 50s the
13:20younger i'm still 49 let me enjoy my 40s in peace i will but what i'm going to say is don't be fearful
13:27of it or aging time is flying by and i remember my mum saying that when i was 21 she said enjoy it
13:35because it will fly by yeah yeah yeah yeah and here i am at 50 in the blink of an eye and i think that's
13:40one of life's catches and you have to live that life i know is there any decisions that you wouldn't
13:46have made or do you go no regrets look sitting here with you how can i have regrets you know everything
13:53that's happened has brought me here so you have to be quite positive do you feel like that 100 i mean
13:58obviously we've both been through a divorce yeah we've both made mistakes and as much as i regret hurting
14:06people maybe or causing chaos yeah it shapes you to who you are in this moment yeah and i think life
14:14is too short yeah to have regrets i mean it's not decisions for me but knowing your worth and the
14:22amount of times i've been walked over and you are so i know i know you know like there's times that i
14:28wish i'd said no i wish i'd been a bit bolder and a bit no stronger yeah a bit stronger after
14:36a divorce what you do think is that you are never going to find love again do you sort of trust
14:42yourself to fall in love and make a good decision about somebody for the rest of your life be nice
14:49wouldn't it i don't really trust anyone really that's the trouble i think that is my main thing what
14:54do you think i'm gonna do oh no i trust you and made my mum and dad and my family but yeah it's
14:59just getting out there and trusting isn't it happy birthday darling oh thank you to another 49 years
15:06to another 49 years you're fabulous
15:08this morning we're tackling the biggest job in the house thank you my darling laying the concrete floor
15:29i've got so much makeup on to do cementing i literally look like i'm gonna do panto
15:36so we've got both scott and stomatis on hand to help we'll work from that corner back this way
15:46and we'll do like a strip here and then we'll move across okay now how long does concrete take
15:52to set it in this heat it's going to be quick maybe 10 minutes to prevent the concrete setting
15:59too quickly and forming cracks you wet the floor first ready get pouring spread it evenly into the
16:07space oh oh it's like the cow pack oh more cement yeah and then use a screeding bar to level the
16:14surface some ways of doing things are so old-fashioned yeah we just did this on a 800 square meter garden
16:21oh my god and with less than 10 minutes till the whole floor dries out i'm on cement duty
16:29alan what more water come on look look why have i got the rubbish jobs i want to be like hands-on
16:38there you know what i mean i'm missing all the good stuff alan what off
16:42finally i'm allowed to do some diy we can do it together alan just with little like shakes like
16:53that and then you pull it backwards oh like that and then pull it down that's it oh i see it's all in
16:59the wrist slide to the left slide to the right crisscross it's a bit like the cha-cha slide
17:05i can feel it setting hold buddy i'm actually going to tip forward don't tip forward no scott can
17:12you grab this is so tight you're going to have to put your arms around me oh my god i'm in so much
17:21about nine kilos of sweat scott and stomatis finish off the floor just in time can you see that
17:28oh my god Amanda yes you know you're quite nimble yes the question matters his phone is you are
17:39kidding me i'm going to restart now well i did do gymnastics so move that over there i'll do some
17:45beam work oh Amanda the way wow really please give it thank you
17:58Amanda i need my hard hat maybe after lunch
18:09while the concrete sets i'm heading to the nearby village of cassiope
18:14to visit the local greek orthodox church
18:28it's so ornate i was not expecting all the detail and all the artwork to be honest
18:39wasn't it gorgeous it feels opulent ours are sort of stripped back aren't they in the uk
18:46but this feels you know lots of golds and it's very blingy
18:51corfu is nicknamed the island of churches and there are over 250 across the island
19:00you know everyone has their own version of faith but there is no denying every time
19:05i come into a church that i do feel grounded and a sense of well just calm and peace really
19:13my nan was quite religious i naturally connect to her in a church
19:24it makes you reflective i will always come in and not necessarily pray but i will think about
19:30life and people that i've lost i always think about
19:33i will always take a seat and i have a little chat with my nan and my granddad
19:42we lost our little boy when he was stillborn so i always think of him and whenever i light a candle
19:47it's for them you just just makes you think for a second and then you go out into the blinding
19:53sunlight of the real world but you just for that moment you get that sense of
20:15back at the house the floor is solid and prepped ready for amanda to build our bonkett seating in the
20:21dining area just me today no alan no stomatis okay the proper team good yes this is a good team we
20:29call it bonkett seating bonkett so we're just going to build them out of those yeah yes easy easy
20:38okay perfect i feel like we're going quite speedy janice would you give me a job why not why not
20:44while they get stuck in so mattis and i are getting better acquainted on the golf course
20:53you've played golf before nope all right i love crazy golf are you alpha male are you very competitive
21:01you know something i'm gonna win end of story okay it's the best of nine holes watch and learn

21:15in the holes oh god oh so watch oh be careful with the stick aim for the hole oh no way nearly

23:13about that date yes no you're such a sore loser with amanda putting in all the hard work today

25:50thank you
25:52After all our hard graft, it's the final push
26:02to get the living and dining room complete.
26:05The concrete floor's polished, the bonkets plastered
26:09and we're ready to choose our dining table from local stone.
26:12That's so nice to go with the wall.
26:14If you drop the wine, you're not going to come back to me and say,
26:16look what happened here.
26:18Oh, she never drops wine.
26:20By the time it's dropped, she does a forward roll and she's up again.
26:24You know how good at gymnastics she is.
26:26And with our marble tabletop installed,
26:29we're ready for the final touches.
26:33Oh, I love this fabric.
26:35This storage is cute.
26:37I know. To me, to me.
26:39Yeah, yeah. Lower you, Janice.
26:41I always put the books the wrong way, so you just have a nicer colour scheme.
26:45I mean, I put your biography face to the wall.
26:50I think we're done.
26:51Oh, that's worn me out.
26:53Oh.
26:54Lovely lady on Arcadia
26:58Promise you will wait for me
27:04The stone creates the entire mood in here.
27:10It dictates everything and it's, like, better than wallpaper, it's better than plaster.
27:17Yeah.
27:17It's everything.
27:19This polished concrete makes it feel homely and warm.
27:25Do you know why this room works?
27:27Because it's speaking the same language.
27:29It's the same vocabulary.
27:31Listen, the curve of the table, the curve of that table, the curve of the chair, the curve of this.
27:38It all speaks.
27:39It's curvy, it's muted, it's Greek chic.
27:44Greek chic.
27:46You don't want people coming in and smashing plates.
27:48Nobody's going to smash plates in here, Alan.
27:50You reckon we should put a sign up in here?
27:52No signs, Alan.
27:52What about a symbol with a plate on it with a red...
27:55With a cross.
27:56Yeah, then that...
27:57Think about it, yeah?
27:58Do you think that exists?
27:59Well, it's an idea.
28:02Mm-hmm.
28:03OK, great.
28:05You're smashing plates in my arse.
28:08Next time, we get wet and wild.
28:15Dirty.
28:16Oh, disgusting.
28:18And creative.
28:19Is that good?
28:20Don't wipe it like...
28:21No!
28:21As we take on our first ever children's bedroom.
28:25Do you know art is about making mistakes?
28:27Not every five minutes.
28:29That's good.
28:29Oh, yeah.
