00:52Usually in full bloom during the event, Madeira is often described as the flower island

01:00but right now, all the greenery and vegetation can be something of a hazard.

01:06In the narrow lanes, there's generally no see-through on any of the corners

01:11so Schwartz will be listening to the pace notes very carefully

01:15in order to know precisely what lies up ahead.

01:18This is where the partnership between driver and co-driver really comes into play.

01:26Manfred Heimer needs to be calling these at exactly the right pace and rhythm

01:30so the details of the next feature arrive in the driver's consciousness

01:34at exactly the right moment.

01:36Sadly, there's no hard and fast rule about what constitutes the right moment.

01:40In fact, it falls at the moment the driver wants to hear it

01:44and that differs not only from driver to driver

01:47but also from day to day

01:49perhaps even moment to moment in the cockpit.

01:54So, both of these men are working hard

01:56and they're working well together

01:58but even that sometimes isn't enough.

02:01The limit is always there to be pushed

02:07but there can be trouble lurking

02:09at even the least threatening of moments

02:11and a slide that runs wide can turn to disaster

02:15in less time than the blinking of an eye.

02:18You don't need the bloke from QuickFit to tell you that something's broken.

02:35Judging by the noise, several same things.

02:40Schwartz had been running flat out on the very first stage of the event

02:46and gave the suspension a big knock.

02:49Though he continued to push hard, he lost a minute on the stage

02:52and collected a two-minute road penalty.
