00:29welcome the students of the year my very first student has the moves he has the edge and is
00:35possibly the most charismatic actor you've seen on celluloid please welcome varun dhavan

00:54all right then next up she's button cute she's a fashionista and can make love to the camera
01:04like no one else can please welcome alia bhatt
01:06and then good looks baritone voice and solid screen presence please welcome

01:45all right so welcome to coffee with karan what does it feel like comfortable i'm scared yeah i'm
01:56kind of scared and nervous too much pressure we both are scared we've discussed why are you scared
01:59karan because uh it's ruthless uh host i'm a ruthless host yeah i'm scared of these the questions
02:05the rapid fire i told you i told you so you all will answer properly today right because do you
02:11remember the first interview all three of you gave and i called up and screamed at each one of you
02:15individually because you all were eating into each other's line i thought it was the best interview
02:19ever i think we've not learned this is exactly what happened because we were talking at the same
02:24time and somebody here thought that we had nailed it and well alia you don't know what we've done
02:28alia it's amazing and everything and cut to karan screaming at us but we won't do that today no
02:34because you have to speak when spoken to right lovely yes so you're ready for coffee with karan yes
02:40okay so alia let's start with you what does it feel like being on coffee with karan yeah um but what
02:46can i say actually i've grown up watching coffee with karan thank you that makes me sound like one
02:52uh old uncle who's been doing this show for almost two decades i can also be ruthless
02:57okay yes so um and every time i would see the rapid fire i would always imagine myself giving
03:07those answers and i would say this no no she shouldn't have said that i would say this
03:10and my eye is on that hamper your eyes on that hamper do you boys want to win the hamper too
03:15see i'm winning something tonight i have something no no i mean what is that karan what have you
03:22offered him that you're not to us he's winning something i don't know exactly winning something
03:28uh so tell me a little bit about your journey mahesh bhat and suni razdhan's daughter and you
03:34always wanted to be in the movies ever since i can remember anything about my life um i didn't know
03:39who my father was i didn't know what my family did i just knew that um i was above everybody
03:44and i was meant to be in that television box that i was looking at every day and um eventually it
03:52just uh it sort of came to me that i thought that it would be a hard journey it would be very tedious
03:57because my father said so you know it's a forgiving it's an unforgiving place to be and you have to be
04:03really strong and you're going to go through lots of failure and this and that which i probably will
04:07at one point at some point but uh thanks to someone i made it uh into this industry very lavishly very
04:15glamorously glamorously glamorously glamorously and very um student of the early student of the early
04:25student of the early all right you're possibly not from the movie industry you have a really
04:29different approach uh to how things happened for you possibly no i'm not from the film industry
04:34yeah exactly yeah that you were related to manish malotra and you were related to
04:40and you were related but you are related to nobody so why don't you just specify that
04:44i'm not related to any malotra guys yeah actually he's related to manish malotra i am related to
04:53obviously my parents yes that would be nice yeah exactly that actually might be important for you
04:58to add right so you ever thought that you would face the camera as a as a as a hero as they say
05:04no for me i think the bollywood uh the bug and the whole keera inside you for being a hero started
05:10much later uh in my 20s like i grew up in def call and it's a thing that somebody makes fun of you
05:16that hey actually hero one hero one right but we know nobody thinks that you're gonna
05:20actually 10 years data between a film so um yeah pretty lucky and excited to be here
05:25and now let's see how it goes well okay and you were beta number one from what age
05:30oh i was actually beta number two because my parents love my brother and i think i come next in line
05:36but my brother loves me a lot so it's fine uh i think i always did imagine that i'll get get into
05:42this field and in some way i would probably become a hero and this and that but in my head it was
05:48never true anything to do with my family or because of my surname i just had that belief
05:52it might sound a bit arrogant or whatever but i just had that belief and i think that
05:56you have to dream it if you have to achieve it so if you don't dream it it's not going to come true
06:01so i just had that dream in me that fire was burning always it's still burning and hopefully
06:06always be burning thank you obama that was a wonderful together we can uh yeah yes we can
06:11thank you very much president obama we really appreciated your your wise words of wisdom so
06:17what happened earlier on the sets of student of the year um i had no clue in the first schedule
06:24no i didn't mean about the work oh so why were there rumors about you and varun
06:28why were there rumors about me there were rumors about me and sid also there were rumors about me and
06:33sid also yeah that's true i was about to say that i mean this is an outstanding way of judging
06:37there were rumors there was rumors of all three of us together you all were very close yeah so what
06:42happened really alia okay let her talk um okay it's it is very obvious that both of them are very
06:48attractive um and so am i so um it's true to uh it's it's as they say two good looking people can
07:00ever be uh just good friends and initially yes i did hang out with varun a lot because sid did think
07:06i was very young and he would talk to me also like i'm some child and look through me he would look
07:11through you i would be like dude man during promotions and everything he would be i don't know
07:17just be laughing because he would he would just think that i'm not making any sense all the time when
07:21i obviously was always making sense did you feel bad that his sid didn't hit on you honestly no
07:26you were okay with it he lit on me someday
07:29let's talk about what happened on my name is khan yeah so on my name is khan uh at that film
07:45they were both sidhart and varun were assistant directors do you know alia what happened behind
07:51the scenes there was something that the boys were very attached to during the making of my name is khan
07:56really they were attached to the costume department for a particular reason and i have somebody who
08:03was on set every day of the making of my name is khan his name is karan malotra and he shared a very
08:09close equation with varun and sidhart and he has something to say would you have to like to have a
08:13look yes all right let's have a look at karan malotra unplugged my first impression of sid and varun
08:20was disaster to be honest with you because uh when i saw both of them i knew that they were into become
08:25actors but uh i remember as time passed that i think they grew as people they grew as uh ades
08:30also and they eventually proved that they could be good ades and also become actors on khan la may
08:36uh there was a this assistant costume girl who one day came with a huge box of donuts on set
08:42crispy cream donuts and uh we only asked ke kiske lila hai hai to the reply was sidhat
08:47so obviously the donuts exchanging has started happening there and varun had started looking for i
08:52costumes for himself when he would launch himself on the set and flirting with the costume assistants
08:57here and there varun has more of musti in him uh he's he's more of a crazy guy uh and sidhat is is
09:03the more serious and sober kind of a guy i think that's where they are they are different people
09:07and sidhat eventually uh is is more focused in terms of his intensity varun is crack and focused
09:13who got uh sidhat these donuts varun one lady i shall not name her lady so there was a there was
09:23this uh she was a very cool girl actually she took me out also one two nights his girlfriend took you
09:29out we all went out together but what an uh absolute coincidence that you both have to find girls in
09:34the costume department yeah did yours yeah hers was his it was also yeah yeah and she got fired
09:41afterwards so then what happened you broke she got fired after that tell us about it what happened
09:48she got fired i don't know what happened what happened varun has a knack uh she was ill she was ill did you
09:55make her sick i was she was sick she was sick what is that film that walk to remember what is that
10:00film that girl is she had she was she was not so ill she's not so ill she's not so ill she's not so
10:07ill she's not so ill what are you saying she was ill so she had to go home she just killed her you
10:14were dating her with a girl who had a terminal disease no no she was not terminal yeah she's alive she's
10:18very happy she's there somewhere i was not dating anyone she's a friend what happened to your
10:24girlfriend right from los angeles yeah what happened was she came to bombay and what happened did you
10:29touch base with her again uh yeah we were we bought her flowers once i remember i was with them
10:33because that's like a serious lover like he's a serious he's a serious guy like he doesn't
10:37is hanky-panky and shit like that so he's the serious guy so one day he said he
10:41doesn't know where he's going but nothing of this happened you didn't buy her flowers i bought her
10:46flowers i didn't buy that girl anything she was like she had a terminal disease
10:55and he who had no such the girl who had no such problem was buying her
11:00la was so interesting because of her la was very interesting she you know she made sure that we
11:04get out every night and yeah yeah so alia what about you before you came on the sets of student
11:08today varun tells me you had a string of young boyfriends string i wouldn't call it a string but
11:13yeah i did uh i haven't serious relationships like at 17 you had two years you started at 10
11:22meaning when were you having this serious relationship you were 17 when you came
11:27no uh that's that's why i said it's not straight it's not a string i started dating in the sixth
11:33standard what yeah but that obviously wasn't dating that was just like we used to just smile from
11:39to each other from across the classroom and all half base there was no half anything uh i actually
11:47had my first boyfriend in the 10th standard that was your serious relationship that because i dated
11:52him for two years because my first like high school love crush love yeah lovely yeah and then and you
12:00then you dropped him once you became a movie no he dropped me he dropped you he dropped me why because
12:05that i won't say but he dropped you know this yeah he's a very good person but he dropped me okay
12:12so now we have a sense and overview of everyone's past you have a serious relationship with a girl
12:17right now but you're not allowed to talk about her because her family won't like it right i like
12:21someone a lot uh let me just put it in a mature way that i'm uh i really like someone a lot i care about
12:27this uh female deeply deeply deeply and uh yeah we'll see i don't know right now you don't know
12:35where it's very young right now come on so me don't ask you such questions about commitment about life
12:42so we know about your right now your non-commitment commitment issue with this girl who's not from the
12:47movie industry your current status is single are you attached i'm single but you had a long-term
12:54relationship with somebody quite long we did some kind of scooping and we found some images of a girl
13:01you dated she was a south african model and her name is nicole maya and we found images online
13:08please have a look at what nicole looks like let's have a look oh whoa she's very good looking
13:18alia says that with a tad bit of jealousy alia is so upset this is nicole maya top south african
13:28model so say tell us what happened how come no one knows about this i don't know who this girl is
13:31you don't know who this girl is don't lie to me you very well know that you dated so what happened
13:35why did you all break up or not together what happened what's the story nothing yeah we were
13:39dating i think i've uh nicole and i but just i think distance um she's not uh from here but she's
13:44from south africa yeah so i think distance she's gone back we were dating it was it was fun it was
13:49nice and i wish she was staying in bombay but she's not all right so what is happening there's so many
13:54young new talents industry what's the level of insecurity do you get nervous do you get like
13:59anxious that you know all of them are doing good work and who's going to really finally emerge do you
14:03get those insecure thoughts uh no actually because when when student of the year was being filmed i think
14:09i was way more insecure competitive aggressive at that point but i think once the film
14:14released i've become calmer i think more because uh the work that we are doing right now like the
14:21second film that i'm doing i find that so hard and like so much work has to go into that that where
14:27do you have the time to think of what someone else is doing or what project someone else is bagging i
14:31mean you will hear okay this film this one but then very contrary to alia who's completely keeping tabs
14:36about the the work of her contemporary actresses right yeah i mean um i'll be honest yeah yeah
14:43but i'll be honest there are times where you do feel insecure um and i think that is very important
14:47for me because i feel like then i work harder so who makes you insecure alia pariniti she makes
14:53you insecure very you think she's a really good actress i think she's fantastic i think she's so good
14:58that i wish i was that good so um and she's so effortless and her command over the language is
15:04something that i love and we we kind of debuted in the language hindi language but do you think
15:08you speak english better no that's not what i meant i meant that i speak i don't speak hindi as well as
15:15she does what about you said what's your take on competition and like any insecure thoughts as a
15:20result of it you know i think when we were shooting over many when you announced student of the year we
15:24kind of thought that uh we were very confident that we were the only two heroes being launched
15:29by such a big director it's almost like they kind of stole our thunder man when they came in because
15:34when we came in they were like there are five other options right but because you're not from the film
15:39industry is your take on stuff different from say varun's what is your take on that like say uh like
15:43varun would be in a know-how when sushant signs a big film you probably get that information much later
15:49so i do think your approach is different and it's an advantage that you're not from the movies
15:53when you had to handle a situation like this i think a situation like these i i feel happy that
15:57i'm not so aware it keeps you i think sane because if you can't really control what he's up to or what
16:03somebody else is doing so i think when you're not aware of uh how good or as you can probably see
16:07that film and but you can't really compete with talent i think somebody's talented there uh and today
16:16it's it's good to be slightly unaware in this term but sometimes i do miss it i think because you feel
16:21a little lost in terms of making decisions uh so um yeah hopefully if i had somebody i think
16:26everybody on set is equal but when we go pre and post that you feel a bit lost you don't have somebody
16:30to really communicate and ask and take advice and varun do you think having a brother and father in
16:35the business helps you 100 500 so do you think siddharth is at a disadvantage uh no i don't think siddharth is
16:44at a disadvantage i don't think even he thinks it obviously now he doesn't see the thing is it's a
16:48double-edged sword and the audience's mindset is now now is that if you're from a film family
16:53you are not that talented or you don't deserve to be here right so for me yeah it's a flip-sider
17:00you have to earn your place i mean the minute you make a mistake then they're like
17:02oh yeah it's either like you cares kebab films or something like that so
17:06not new world well done webster herself spoke i think so for me first beating that perception
17:15that you know i'm here because i'm probably i have some talent i work hard i work very hard and i
17:20deserve to be here i think uh hard work can prove that that's it nothing else though you come from
17:26the movies earlier uh nepotism may not necessarily apply to you because your father is
17:31a hut k kind of a person if i had to put it in a in a diplomatic manner he's a very unusual man
17:38and i'm sure he spouts many philosophical things to you on a daily basis so he's not the quintessential
17:44film father that possibly david ji is you know or my dad was you know we had film we were in red
17:49in the fraternity uh but mahesh bhati is a completely different man describe to me what makes him different
17:56i think what makes him different is the fact that he uh he calls himself mad um the reason probably
18:04all of us are um you know have our own opinions and we are sane is because he let us uh he didn't um
18:12put any boundaries of sanity he let us be insane because he was insane himself uh and is still insane
18:19uh so i think that's i mean it's like a it's like watching some 500 different tv shows every
18:26day when you're listening to him talk but what is the last fun quote that he said to you give me a
18:31mahesh bat quote what does it sound like to his daughter he once said to me that
18:38you're so consumed in yourself that you will be your own doom
18:42yeah which i think is very true then he gave me a very uh like so every now and i go for like
18:59press events and i need a coach so i had times of india so i called him up i was presenting this
19:03flashback book to mr bachan and i said papa you know i'm what can i say about times of india because
19:08i don't read times of india i need bomby times so he said um um can you imagine um juhu without the
19:17ocean can you imagine hundred years of uh cinema without amitabh bachan can you imagine india without
19:23times of india wow and i just wish i hadn't given him credit for that because it was front page oh god
19:29so now you just did yeah but i mean that i was and what do you think that i mean the she's got like
19:34this amazing talent i don't know why i want to make her do this show that thing i didn't think
19:38yeah just do it i think it's really cool just do it do it show it see no no do that this this is
19:47uh oh god and do the other hand thing just that but that everyone no no enough now you want to see
19:56things inside i think before that we have to take a break all right so clearly acrobatics is something
20:02that i didn't tap into with alia but and that too she's capable of in conversation with varun said

20:29fan base that came your way the movie industry tell me fun stuff about how you were received by the
20:35movie gang i mean i was actually really surprised that i uh initially i remember the first party that
20:41y'all took that you took us to was uh farah khan's housewarming party and i was so perplexed i firstly
20:49dressed up like i don't know what i was wearing and the next day there was some picture of me in the
20:53paper so i said oh my god this is going to happen to every party the picture was a little bit of a
20:57malfunction it built me exactly my first malfunction my first party yes but uh over there i mean i was
21:03kind of overwhelmed with everybody was being really warm and uh i because was not understanding
21:08i said why are they being so nice to me who am i yeah um but then obviously i realized that um
21:14when i'm coming from dharma productions i'm coming from you being introduced by you um i have to have
21:20that kind of this thing and i have to be well behaved and i have to be very warm to everyone also
21:24so um i just did that and now it's like just been one year and i'm feeling like very at home and
21:30comfortable what about you you were anywhere from the movies and you knew a lot of them from before
21:37no i did because of my dad obviously and i think i got a lot of love and support because of my dad and
21:43because of his name and goodwill in the industry a lot of actors reached out to me and were very sweet
21:48and very supportive but i think it's not i don't know somewhere probably because i'm from that from
21:55it wasn't it wasn't new to you not new and it uh it didn't matter so much because for me the people
22:01i don't see it like you know the movie industry is being nice to me it's like life not like how
22:05probably sid saw it for you was it like said yeah you once told me like it feels like an um like an
22:11outer body experience for you to be at a film party and alia felt a little bit of that and you
22:15clearly have heard these names seen these faces as a child never thought that you would be
22:20fraternizing with them one day what was your experience like yeah it's very different as
22:23you said i think for for me uh i still haven't figured out what to do with these filmy parties
22:27uh you know everybody who is to meet all of all three of us is like hey varun the
22:31bachman main tu asa tha alia i've seen you this in the godi thing so no when it comes to me
22:35the you know the childhood just go out of the window because i'm not really spent you know none of them
22:40would know anything about my childhood so i'm like hi i'm sadhat so you know so it's like so you find
22:45yourself still awkward at a film party yes i still haven't figured out they're very boring
22:49i mean the parties are boring see but now he would know because maybe he's heard it from
22:53i have to be very honest with my childhood i never went to any of these parties you find
22:56parties parties even even actually i actually relate to siddharth honestly more because as you said my
23:03father's a little hutke he doesn't believe in socializing and i never was taken to any of these
23:08filming parties however i have been told by many directors that i've seen you when you were this
23:12recently but i don't remember you played on many laps of this industry you seem to have been
23:17obsessed by film industry laps because about 300 people have told me oh alia sat on my lap alia sat
23:24on my lap i'm like all alia did through her childhood was sit on men's laps that doesn't sound right
23:31but that's i don't remember that exactly but that's what i'm saying so when people tell me i'm like
23:35yeah but i don't remember so i'm just like really clueless and because you were just going from
23:40lap to lap how will you remember he was just booking these directors for the future and siddharth felt
23:45so bad he didn't never sat on anyone i remember barun and siddharth telling me alia that they thought
23:52young girls would chase them they didn't realize little children would be running behind them because
23:56that seems to have been the nickelodeon or disney impact of student of the year but let's have a look at
24:01what people out there have to say about the three of you by the impact that the film has caused
24:05especially the boys we've done a little bit of a boy survey first for fun and there's a little bit
24:09of viewers well alia so let's have a look i would like siddharth to be my boyfriend because he would
24:19take care of my earrings for me i like that hearing scene instead of the ears so yeah rather date siddharth
24:24because i think he's tall and he's a little cuter than the rest i would want alia to be my girlfriend
24:29because she's hot she's hot and she's really hot her dimples oh god and in the end of course
24:37she kissed siddharth malhotra i was quite jealous of that i think alia should not date anyone she
24:42should just stay with chinichu if i don't get to date alia i'm gonna jump from here i would like alia
24:49but to be my girlfriend because she's 19 19 is a lucky number
24:59siddharth would be a better lover because he looks intense he's cute varun would be a better
25:04lover because he's not just intense i think he's one of those really sweet guys who would treat you
25:09would make you feel like a princess varun because he's more fairer varun would be a better lover i
25:15think the better lover between siddharth and varun oh he's saying because varun looks more like a guy
25:21who would cheat and siddharth looks cool i think siddharth is a better lover siddharth because when he
25:26would express his feelings you could feel it more than varun i think varun has a better bum totally
25:47like that did we see their bums at all um i think varun has a better bum siddharth varun has a better bum
25:54varun's got a better bum varun siddharth i guess i have the better bum alia i have a better bum like
