00:15:27treat your sister what do you want I'm worried I need a little bit more information Michael
00:15:34Caldwell got into this big argument with a stranger who wants to buy his winery but Michael
00:15:38doesn't want to sell it to him and the guy gave me the creeps did you meet this guy saw him I didn't
00:15:43meet him and what about him was creepy something about the way he amped up and then he just left felt
00:15:49anxious maybe even desperate didn't feel like just business something about it didn't smell right
00:15:56smell right to your crime nose or your community nose crime nose okay that makes me nervous
00:16:03anything else after that I saw this strange woman in Shannon's coffee shop well that coffee shop is a
00:16:10pretty eclectic place there's a lot of strange people going in and out no she didn't fit your skills
00:16:15as a criminologist are superb that's why you teach a course but you don't need to practice them
00:16:19because you're not in Chicago anymore and that's a good thing yeah maybe you're right leave it with
00:16:29me before I put an APB out on strange woman and creepy guy I'll just have a look around to see if
00:16:34there's anything hanky hanky that is a word I've literally never used in my life probably never
00:16:40will again okay good night Ryan thank you I love you good talk good night
00:16:47love you too sis
00:16:52hanky
00:16:55I think I'm right George there's something up with Michael and that guy and I don't like it
00:17:08I know you'd rather talk about my dinner next week with Jake honestly I'm surprised that he asked me
00:17:16I never dreamed he'd be interested in me oh am I interested in him I mean I never really gave
00:17:23it much thought because he didn't seem like yeah I know I know I'm a liar but you like him because
00:17:31he knows that secret spot on your neck you like to have scratched and that clouds your judgment
00:17:36but that's okay oh I'm gonna have lunch with Shannon tomorrow no I'm sorry you can't come
00:17:45of course she forgives you for eating her flowers but it's just a girl's lunch this time
00:17:51I hope I see Michael though
00:17:53to the tasting room oh door's open is somebody here no we don't have anyone booked for today
00:18:05maybe Michael left it open when he brought up some cases of wine to restock did you want a
00:18:11memory Shannon what what is it
00:18:16he's dead
00:18:21I can't really know
00:18:24call my brother right now
00:18:27I know I remember
00:18:29Shannon Shannon
00:18:31what's going on
00:18:33I don't know
00:18:34is that Rick what is he still he's dead Michael Michael why'd you change your clothes
00:18:41because I spilled wine on them while I was topping the barrels
00:18:44Ainsley you don't think I did this
00:18:51oh Ainsley I don't know what I think yet
00:18:53but it looks like someone murdered Rick Dean
00:18:57Ryan you know Michael you know he's not capable of something like this it's not that good
00:18:59I don't know what I'm doing
00:19:01but it looks like someone murdered Rick Dean
00:19:02Ryan you know Michael you know he's not capable of something like this it's not that good
00:19:16Ryan, you know Michael.
00:19:21You know he's not capable of something like this.
00:19:23It's not possible.
00:19:24Shannon, I promise you we're doing everything we can
00:19:25to get to the bottom of this.
00:19:26But you arrested him?
00:19:27No.
00:19:28We're bringing him in for questioning,
00:19:30and you know exactly why we have to do that.
00:19:32Michael has not been charged with anything.
00:19:35Mrs. Caldwell, what happened?
00:19:38Danny, it's awful.
00:19:39Someone killed Rick Dean,
00:19:40and the sheriff thinks Michael did it.
00:19:42Michael?
00:19:43Well, there's just no way.
00:19:45Who are you?
00:19:46I'm Danny Avery.
00:19:47Danny works with us.
00:19:48Were you here all afternoon, Danny?
00:19:50No, I've been in town.
00:19:51I just got back.
00:19:52Ryan.
00:19:55Sheriff, can we please take Shannon someplace to sit down?
00:19:58Yeah, of course.
00:19:59I'll take care of her.
00:20:00Thank you, Danny.
00:20:02Okay.
00:20:03Ainsley, please help prove that Michael didn't do this.
00:20:08Yeah.
00:20:08I'm sure the sheriff will do just that.
00:20:11Okay, don't worry.
00:20:11Shh.
00:20:18Ryan.
00:20:19Ainsley.
00:20:20I can call you Ryan when no one else is around.
00:20:22Michael, really?
00:20:24He was at the scene of the crime
00:20:25after having showered and put his clothes in the washing machine.
00:20:28It's not so unusual for someone to shower and change
00:20:30after working in a wine cellar.
00:20:32Come on.
00:20:32And there is wine on the floor near the barrels.
00:20:34How did you?
00:20:35I just checked.
00:20:36Michael said he spilled some on himself while he was there.
00:20:38And there is laundry and shower for the workers right beside it.
00:20:42Michael probably just...
00:20:44Probably just what?
00:20:45It's not a good look.
00:20:47He had conflict with the victim, which you saw yesterday.
00:20:49And it looks like, at least initially, he was killed with a wine bottle.
00:20:52Sheriff!
00:20:54I got it.
00:20:54You haven't even started this investigation.
00:20:57Rick Dean could have had any number of people who wanted to harm him.
00:21:00Ainsley, don't you think I know that?
00:21:01I got to get back to this.
00:21:02Just please come down to the station tonight
00:21:04and give your statement to Lena, all right?
00:21:06Yes.
00:21:07Come to a good look.
00:21:09Okay.
00:21:10We found this nearby.
00:21:11What do you think?
00:21:13Yeah, I just...
00:21:14Make sure.
00:21:16Did you know Mr. Doom was coming to your property today, Mr. Caldwell?
00:21:20No, I didn't.
00:21:21I was surprised when I saw him.
00:21:23I thought I made it clear I didn't want to do business with him.
00:21:25Then why did he say he was there?
00:21:28He was pressuring me to sell the winery.
00:21:30Threatening me.
00:21:31He threatened you?
00:21:32How?
00:21:33He claimed that he had information on the winery's illegal business practices,
00:21:37which is ridiculous.
00:21:39He said he would expose me if I didn't sell.
00:21:42So there was no basis to his accusations?
00:21:45No.
00:21:45But he could make things difficult for us.
00:21:47Cause delays and disrupt business,
00:21:50even if he was just making false charges.
00:21:54We're struggling a bit right now, and I'm not even sure why.
00:21:57But some bad press like that could be devastating.
00:22:00How did you react to these threats?
00:22:04I was angry.
00:22:05So you argued.
00:22:07I didn't kill him.
00:22:09I didn't even touch him.
00:22:10I told him to get off my property,
00:22:13I left the tasting room,
00:22:14and then I went straight to the barrel cellar to work.
00:22:16And cool off.
00:22:18I suppose so.
00:22:20But that's the last time I saw him.
00:22:23In the tasting room.
00:22:24And very much alive.
00:22:26How long were you in the cellar?
00:22:29Not long.
00:22:29I was talking the barrels and was doing a bad job of it.
00:22:34I should have waited for Danny to get there tomorrow.
00:22:37But I was impatient,
00:22:41and I was just spilling all over the place.
00:22:44I realized I wasn't getting anywhere,
00:22:47so I stopped.
00:22:49So Danny wasn't with you?
00:22:51No.
00:22:53It was his day off.
00:22:55So what'd you do next?
00:22:57I took a shower,
00:22:59and then I was heading into the house,
00:23:00and that's when I heard Shannon scream,
00:23:02and I ran into the tasting room.
00:23:04Is it normal that you would take a shower there
00:23:07and not at the house?
00:23:08I was covered in wine,
00:23:10and I didn't want to put my coat on over it.
00:23:12What did you do with your clothes?
00:23:14I threw them in the washer there.
00:23:15Do you usually wash your clothes in the winery building?
00:23:18No, but it was just easier.
00:23:20There was already a load,
00:23:22and I just threw my clothes in there and started it.
00:23:25That's all there is to it.
00:23:26Where did these clothes come from?
00:23:28I always keep a change of clothes in my locker
00:23:30in case something like this happens.
00:23:32That all sounds a bit convenient, Mr. Caldwell.
00:23:35That's the point.
00:23:36It was convenient for me to change there
00:23:38and not go into my house smelling like wine.
00:23:40Or convenient to clean up blood by showering
00:23:43and putting your bloody clothes in the washer.
00:23:44No.
00:23:45Tell us the truth.
00:23:46It will go a lot easier on you, Mr. Caldwell.
00:23:48I am telling you the truth.
00:23:49Or can't you stop this?
00:23:56I think you need a turning mic.
00:24:15They said you were busy.
00:24:16I asked if I could wait.
00:24:17I should get a better gatekeeper.
00:24:19Uh, wouldn't work on me.
00:24:21I'm so tiny, I'd slip right past him.
00:24:24I gotta finish up here
00:24:25to get over and read the medical examiner's report.
00:24:28May I see Michael?
00:24:29No.
00:24:30Have you already questioned him?
00:24:31Yes, Ainsley.
00:24:32You cannot be involved in this.
00:24:34I know that Shannon's your best friend
00:24:36and that you're very close with Michael.
00:24:37So are you.
00:24:39We all do sports together.
00:24:40Do sports?
00:24:42Whatever.
00:24:43I'm into fitness, not sports.
00:24:44Look, I can help you.
00:24:46I'm a criminologist, and you need one right now.
00:24:49The reason you left Chicago was to get away from all this.
00:24:52You were hurt badly.
00:24:54I was hurt because I got close to something I shouldn't have.
00:24:57Exactly.
00:24:58And I brought you here to get you out of the public eye
00:25:00and to keep you safe.
00:25:01But I can't.
00:25:01No, no, no.
00:25:02You just can't, okay?
00:25:05Look, I know how talented you are
00:25:07and how valuable you were
00:25:08to the Chicago Police Department as a consultant,
00:25:10but I also know that I don't know what I would ever do
00:25:12if anything were to ever happen to you.
00:25:17Good morning, George.
00:25:34I hope you weren't with Ainsley yesterday
00:25:37for all that dreadful business.
00:25:40No, he wasn't.
00:25:41And you heard?
00:25:42We've all heard.
00:25:45Wow, word travels fast around here.
00:25:47Well, we were all concerned about you, Ains.
00:25:50Shannon and Michael, too.
00:25:51I can't imagine how horrible
00:25:53that must have been for you, Ainsley.
00:25:54You, too, Danny?
00:25:56Oh.
00:25:56Oh, no, child.
00:25:58Were you there, too?
00:25:59Yeah, I came in after being in town.
00:26:02Has your brother talked to you about the investigation?
00:26:05Does anyone believe Michael was involved?
00:26:07I know.
00:26:08And I wish you could provide an alibi for him.
00:26:10Believe me, so do I.
00:26:12What can you tell us, Ainsley?
00:26:15Uh, nothing, really.
00:26:17Well, that's deeply unsatisfying.
00:26:19We all just want help.
00:26:22Yeah, I appreciate that.
00:26:23I do.
00:26:23It's just that it's an active investigation
00:26:26that I'm not a part of,
00:26:27so I can't tell you anything.
00:26:29Hey, y'all.
00:26:30Let's say we give Ainsley a break.
00:26:32We've all got a busy day ahead of us.
00:26:34Hey, Dawn, can you keep an eye on our booth
00:26:36this morning, please?
00:26:37I'll finish getting it set up,
00:26:38but I gotta run back to the winery for a bit.
00:26:40Yeah, you got it, Danny.
00:26:40Thanks so much.
00:26:42Hey, maybe we could all put our heads together tonight
00:26:46at the book club meeting to talk about what happened.
00:26:48That's a great idea.
00:26:50What about the book?
00:26:51We can talk about that, too,
00:26:52but something like this just doesn't happen in Sweet River.
00:26:55We really do want to help Ainsley.
00:26:58We're not just busybodies, you know?
00:27:00Of course not.
00:27:03Um, okay.
00:27:05Let's just see what happens at the club tonight.
00:27:08Will you open for me this morning?
00:27:09I need to run a quick errand.
00:27:11Happy to.
00:27:11George can stay with me.
00:27:13Okay.
00:27:13Oh, Mrs. Whedon, please don't feed him.
00:27:17Oh, Mrs. Whedon, please don't feed him.
00:27:18That's my boy.
00:27:27Oh!
00:27:28Oh, Jake!
00:27:29I'm so sorry.
00:27:31Did you ever play football?
00:27:32No.
00:27:33No, I don't do sports.
00:27:35Do sports?
00:27:36No.
00:27:36I think maybe you should have.
00:27:37I don't think I was hit that hard when I played in high school or in college.
00:27:41I'm sorry.
00:27:41I'm just kind of in a hurry.
00:27:44Yeah, I got that part.
00:27:45Do you need to check for the fire codes?
00:27:47I can show you about them.
00:27:48No, Ainsley, the only thing I'm here to check on is you.
00:27:50I heard about you yesterday.
00:27:54You okay?
00:27:57Uh, yeah.
00:27:58Yeah, I'm fine.
00:28:02That's so nice of you.
00:28:05I know about all your criminology stuff, but still, finding a body, it's got to be traumatic.
00:28:12Yeah, it's not the body.
00:28:14It's that my friends are involved.
00:28:16Hmm.
00:28:17I think I'm still processing it.
00:28:19Yeah, I get that.
00:28:22I thought, uh, a nice dinner would be a good distraction.
00:28:25One that you don't make yourself.
00:28:27We could just flip the order.
00:28:28I could, um, take you out first for dinner tonight.
00:28:31Yeah.
00:28:32Yeah, I'd like that a lot.
00:28:34Great.
00:28:357 p.m.?
00:28:36Uh, 7.30.
00:28:38I have a book club meeting here from 6 to 7, and then I could meet you at Dooley's after that.
00:28:437.30 it is.
00:28:45Great.
00:28:46Looking forward to it.
00:28:49Huh.
00:28:54I think you were in a hurry.
00:28:56Oh, I am.
00:28:58I, I have someone I want to catch up with.
00:29:01I'm going to head over to the ER and have them check my ribs.
00:29:03Think you might have cracked one.
00:29:04I'm not big enough to hurt.
00:29:07See you tonight.
00:29:12Oh, Danny.
00:29:13Good.
00:29:14What can I do for you, Mrs. Caldwell?
00:29:16It's up to us to keep the winery running while Michael is gone.
00:29:19Can you fill in?
00:29:20Do you need me to get you any help?
00:29:21I can do it.
00:29:23The vines are pretty much dormant.
00:29:24You two have already done the blending, and I can keep an eye on the barrel almost.
00:29:26Has Michael told you about how the winery's been doing?
00:29:30Financially, I mean.
00:29:31I know he was talking to that Rick gang about investing.
00:29:34Yeah, we've been doing okay, but lately it's not okay enough.
00:29:39I don't know what's happening, but according to the books, we're losing money.
00:29:42I'm worried about keeping this place above water until Michael gets back.
00:29:45Well, you can count on me.
00:29:46I know I can, Danny, and it means a lot to us.
00:29:49I'll have someone fill in for you at BYA while you're here, and I'm at the coffee shop.
00:29:53Thanks.
00:29:54And tell Michael I have his back.
00:29:56I will, Danny.
00:30:08You're not going to get away with this, Rachel.
00:30:09I can promise you that.
00:30:11You may have conned my father, but you can't con me.
00:30:13You really need to get a new act, Bridget.
00:30:15But this one's getting very old.
00:30:16Well, at least I won't have to deal with you for much longer.
00:30:20Is that a threat?
00:30:22I think you know exactly what it is.
00:30:24Miss Dean?
00:30:25Yes?
00:30:26I'm looking for Rachel Dean, the deceased's wife.
00:30:28That'd be me.
00:30:29I'm Dr. Stevens, the medical examiner for the county.
00:30:32Are you ready to identify the body?
00:30:35I'm his daughter, Bridget Dean.
00:30:37I'd like to be there, too.
00:30:39Of course.
00:30:45Mainsley.
00:30:47Kane, hey.
00:30:49I was just in the area.
00:30:50Thought I'd drop by and say hi.
00:30:51That was not a great time.
00:30:53Yeah, I see that.
00:30:55I'll wait.
00:30:56Hey.
00:31:21Hey.
00:31:21What are you doing here?
00:31:22Well, I said I'd come by today, didn't I?
00:31:25Well, today's almost over.
00:31:27We closed half an hour ago.
00:31:28Technically still today.
00:31:30Well, I'm just setting up for the book club.
00:31:33Oh, right.
00:31:34Yeah, that's tonight.
00:31:36Well, this place is incredible.
00:31:40Hey, I didn't know you also set up the art gallery.
00:31:42Yeah, we had almost 100 people through today.
00:31:46Congrats.
00:31:46Congrats.
00:31:46So, how's the investigation going?
00:31:51Uh, you know, it's going.
00:31:54Well, you're going to go easy on Michael, aren't you?
00:31:57Go easy on him?
00:31:59He's a suspect in a murder case.
00:32:00I'm going to treat him like I treat anybody in that situation.
00:32:02But you know he didn't do it.
00:32:04No, I don't, actually.
00:32:05And I've got to let Lena take the lead on this,
00:32:07because if I do it, it's just a conflict of interest.
00:32:09Lena, no.
00:32:10She's new.
00:32:10She doesn't know him at all.
00:32:12Exactly.
00:32:12Look, I've got to go.
00:32:16Where?
00:32:17To continue the investigation.
00:32:19Oh.
00:32:21Congrats.
00:32:22The place looks great.
00:32:25You deserve it.
00:32:29The victim was definitely hitting the back of the head,
00:32:31causing blood force trauma.
00:32:32The wine bottle.
00:32:33There were fragments of glass matching the broken wine bottle
00:32:35he found at the scene in the wound,
00:32:37and, of course, wine scenes in his hair and on his clothes.
00:32:40But there's no way he died from getting hit by a wine bottle.
00:32:43That's the thing.
00:32:44The blow from the wine bottle didn't kill him,
00:32:46though it very likely knocked him unconscious,
00:32:47at least temporarily.
00:32:49So what was the cause of death?
00:32:50He was stabbed in his side, chest level.
00:32:52And it punctured the ventricle of his heart,
00:32:54causing cardiac tamponade.
00:32:56The bleeding was predominantly internal.
00:32:58Very little external bleeding there at the entry point
00:33:00for the stab wound, which is about seven inches deep.
00:33:02You think it was a knife?
00:33:03The shape of the wound and the fact that we found traces of glass in it
00:33:06makes it very likely it was from a shard.
00:33:08From the same wine bottle?
00:33:09It appears so.
00:33:10And the angle of entry makes it very likely
00:33:12the attacker was left-handed.
00:33:15See, the thing is,
00:33:15we didn't find a shard that size for the crime scene.
00:33:18Or pieces with the amount of blood on them
00:33:20you'd expect to find from a stabbing.
00:33:22So that means the murder weapon's missing.
00:33:27All right.
00:33:29Thanks, Kate.
00:33:30You just take a nice nap, George.
00:33:37You've had a full day.
00:33:38I hope you've had enough to eat.
00:33:40Oh, thanks to you, he's stuffed.
00:33:42I'm sure he'll pass out.
00:33:43He's a growing boy.
00:33:45He's five.
00:33:45Okay, y'all.
00:33:48Let's get started.
00:33:48Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:33:49Oh.
00:33:50It's, it's relaxing.
00:33:51Maybe we could read it here.
00:33:52One day, it could possibly happen.
00:33:54That's right.
00:33:55Nope.
00:33:56Then I would know how to read it.
00:33:57I wrote chapter two.
00:33:58Oh.
00:33:58I'm here.
00:33:59I'm sorry.
00:34:00Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry.
00:34:01You made it.
00:34:02Hi.
00:34:02Hi, hi, hi, hi.
00:34:03Hot time, Maureen.
00:34:08Okay.
00:34:09It is our first book club meeting at Bless Your Arts, and I want...
00:34:14Yes, yes, let's just get started.
00:34:15No more speeches.
00:34:17Oh.
00:34:20And don't slouch, Ainsley.
00:34:22You're a tiny little thing already.
00:34:23Yes.
00:34:25Well, at least you still do your reading.
00:34:26The good old-fashioned books, though.
00:34:28It speaks well of you.
00:34:29Oh, well, thank you, but I think plenty of folks enjoy reading on their electricity.
00:34:33It's convenient.
00:34:35It's barbaric.
00:34:37It's actually the exact opposite of barbaric, Mrs. Whedon.
00:34:41I think there's plenty of room at our club for both, Gladys.
00:34:45The original Widow's Circle book club has to change with the times.
00:34:50I mean, look around.
00:34:52There's so few of us left.
00:34:54Now, I like the feeling of having a book in my hands.
00:34:58The fun of turning the pages as you go,
00:35:01and the satisfaction of reaching that last page and closing the book.
00:35:05My point exactly, Maureen.
00:35:06But I don't think it matters how or what you read it on.
00:35:10It's the actual reading that counts.
00:35:12About that, I actually didn't finish the book.
00:35:16Yeah, I gotta admit, I didn't finish it either.
00:35:18Me either.
00:35:19Sorry, Mrs. Whedon.
00:35:20How can we have a lively discussion if no one has read the book?
00:35:24Oh, I read the book.
00:35:25So did I.
00:35:26Did you read it, Mrs. Whedon?
00:35:29I've read enough.
00:35:30But there's so much excitement going on right now.
00:35:33And maybe we really would be better served if we used our time talking about the unfortunate event at the minery.
00:35:37You mean the murder?
00:35:38Oh, yes.
00:35:40Let's talk about that.
00:35:40My nephew, Kevin, is deputy trainee at the sheriff's office.
00:35:45We don't know, Maureen.
00:35:47You mentioned at least once a day.
00:35:48What's he told you about the case?
00:35:49Oh, wait.
00:35:50I don't think Kevin should be disclosing any information that might compromise the investigation.
00:35:55Fiddlesticks.
00:35:56Who is more on the pulse of what's happening in Sweet River than the Riddle Circle?
00:36:00And we're fortunate to have Maureen here.
00:36:02Thank you, Gladys.
00:36:04Well, Kevin tells me the medical examiner determined Rick Dean died by being stabbed, not by being hit by the bottle.
00:36:12Really?
00:36:13I mean, Kevin really shouldn't be telling you things like that.
00:36:16He's a good boy.
00:36:17And he's so easily bribed with chocolate chip cookies.
00:36:21He's one of my students.
00:36:23And he does share those cookies in class.
00:36:25I told him to take your criminology class.
00:36:27How's he doing?
00:36:28Oh, I can't.
00:36:28We're off topic, ladies.
00:36:31Anything else, Maureen?
00:36:33Yes.
00:36:34They haven't found the murder weapon.
00:36:37Those sound like important clues to me.
00:36:39Especially if and when they do find the murder weapon.
00:36:44I watch a lot of mysteries on TV.
00:36:47It helps calm me down at the end of the day.
00:36:49That would keep me up.
00:36:50Yeah, me too.
00:36:51I have to read before I go to bed.
00:36:52Just not this book.
00:36:54Okay, I think I need to stop this conversation.
00:36:57My brother would not like it.
00:36:58As a criminologist, aren't you the least bit curious, dear?
00:37:01And your best friend's husband's accused of the crime?
00:37:04Well, I really like Michael, but how can we even be sure?
00:37:07We don't have to be sure.
00:37:09Because my brother and the sheriff's department is going to find out what happened and make sure that the proper person is brought to justice.
00:37:15It can't hurt anything easily to just discuss it.
00:37:18We might be able to come up with something that could help Ryan.
00:37:22Yeah.
00:37:22Okay, but only on two conditions.
00:37:29One, nothing we discuss here leaves this room.
00:37:32Or the fact that we're even discussing it.
00:37:34And two, we don't do anything to interfere with or impede the sheriff's investigation.
00:37:39Fine.
00:37:40Those of us here tonight at the Widow Circle, agree to those conditions.
00:37:44Okay.
00:37:45Let's schedule a new meeting in a few days.
00:37:47Give us time to think about the case and come back with some theories.
00:37:50Good idea, Maria.
00:37:51I agree.
00:37:52And I'll do some more digging with Kevin.
00:37:54No, Marines.
00:37:55Or not.
00:37:56You smart woman, Ainsley.
00:37:58If you were leading us, I'd imagine we could crack this case.
00:38:02You want me to lead?
00:38:03Mm-hmm.
00:38:04Yeah.
00:38:04With your background, of course you should lead.
00:38:11Yeah, okay.
00:38:12Okay.
00:38:15I hope I don't regret this.
00:38:21You're going to be all right.
00:38:27She's going to be with you in a minute.
00:38:28All right.
00:38:29Okay, keep breathing.
00:38:29All right.
00:38:43Dooley.
00:38:44Well, well, look what the cat dragged in.
00:38:47Howdy, Ainsley.
00:38:49It's right over there.
00:38:51Oh, thanks, Dooley.
00:38:52He's been grinning like a mule eating cockleburs ever since he walked in here.
00:38:57Wait, am I late?
00:38:58Nope.
00:38:58He was early.
00:38:59Been here about 30 minutes.
00:39:01What?
00:39:02You're about happier than a clam at high time.
00:39:05Thanks, Dooley.
00:39:07I'll come check on you all in a minute.
00:39:08Enjoy yourself.
00:39:09Evening, Ainsley.
00:39:10Hi, Jake.
00:39:11Hi.
00:39:11I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long.
00:39:13I had to drop George off at the house.
00:39:15No, I just got here.
00:39:17Oh, Dooley said you've been here a while.
00:39:19Oh, did he?
00:39:22Um, hey.
00:39:24Yeah.
00:39:26Oh, yeah, here, let me.
00:39:28There you go.
00:39:30No problem.
00:39:31Okay, I can move my jacket.
00:39:32Put yours here.
00:39:35Okay, nice and comfy.
00:39:37And that over here.
00:39:39Move that along the way.
00:39:40Okay.
00:39:44Oh, actually, that is mine, and this one is yours.
00:39:47I've been drinking out of that one earlier, and...
00:39:51I'm sorry.
00:39:55I'm acting like a trunk with socks on a rooster.
00:39:56I'm so sorry.
00:39:58It's totally fine.
00:40:04You look great.
00:40:07So do you.
00:40:08Well, I'm, uh, just try and relax and enjoy a nice meal.
00:40:13That sounds good.
00:40:19Oh, I'm always in the mood for some of Dooley's Tex-Mex.
00:40:22Best in the county.
00:40:23Folks come from all over the place.
00:40:25As they should.
00:40:26Mm-hmm.
00:40:26You're a native here, in town, right?
00:40:38Yes, yes.
00:40:39Born and bred.
00:40:40Uh, family's been in Sweet River for generations.
00:40:43You know, I've never asked anyone how the town got its name.
00:40:47I mean, obviously, the river runs through it.
00:40:50Well, way back in the late 1800s, they discovered oil a couple counties over near the river.
00:40:55Sweet crude oil.
00:40:57And folks, they started calling the river the Sweet River.
00:40:59Kind of out of luck, but it stuck.
00:41:01And then when this town grew up on its banks, I think they just figured out a nice ring to it.
00:41:07Better than the Sweet Crude River, I suppose.
00:41:10That it is.
00:41:17So you must be pretty busy being the fire chief and running your own store.
00:41:22Yeah, well, I have help at both places.
00:41:24And luckily, there's not too many calls for the fire department.
00:41:28Yeah, it's mostly volunteer, right?
00:41:29It is, yeah.
00:41:31You looking to join?
00:41:32No, no, no, no.
00:41:34I think I have my hands full as it is.
00:41:35Right.
00:41:39Got that seat just like how you like it.
00:41:46Hey, Jake.
00:41:47Have you seen that woman around town?
00:41:49What woman?
00:41:50Don't look.
00:41:52Okay, well, um, how am I supposed to know if I've seen her?
00:41:56Dooley.
00:41:59How y'all doing?
00:42:00You fixing to order some grats?
00:42:01Yeah, we will be, but do you know that woman you just seated at the bar?
00:42:05No, don't.
00:42:06Don't walk.
00:42:07She doesn't want to look.
00:42:09Okay.
00:42:11Okay, look, look, no.
00:42:12I don't, I don't know her.
00:42:14But, I mean, she was in here every night since her and her husband came to town until, you know, well, until he wasn't.
00:42:21You know those two sure didn't get along?
00:42:23They make quite a fuss Saturday night.
00:42:26The night before her husband was killed?
00:42:28That's right.
00:42:29Her?
00:42:30Do you know her?
00:42:31Well, I was in here that night, too, with some of the guys from the station, and they made a big scene.
00:42:34Now, I don't eavesdrop, because I don't do that.
00:42:39But I couldn't help but hear her tell him that he wasn't going to be able to leave her, because she wouldn't let him.
00:42:44He wanted a divorce?
00:42:46Sure sounded like that to me.
00:42:47But I don't eavesdrop, so.
00:42:49Are you asking because of your, uh, investigative book club meeting tonight?
00:42:55How'd you know about that?
00:42:57Well, I ran at dawn on the way over here.
00:43:00We just had that meeting an hour ago, and it was confidential.
00:43:03You know, I don't think that this town does confidential.
00:43:06I heard about it, too.
00:43:08I sure hope you find out who did it.
00:43:11You know, it's an awful shame about Michael.
00:43:14He's an awful good customer.
00:43:16And you know, he was in here Friday night with them, and they had quite a row.
00:43:21Michael walked out on them, and you know what I don't blame him?
00:43:24That Rick Dean was meaner than a skillet full of rattlesnakes.
00:43:28He was threatening Michael.
00:43:29He told him he would ruin him if he didn't sell him the winery.
00:43:33It was an honor, he cussed.
00:43:34Did you tell my brother all of this?
00:43:36Well, no, I didn't want to get Michael into any more trouble.
00:43:39But it might help him get out of it.
00:43:44What are you thinking, Ainsley?
00:43:46I'm thinking I need to go talk to this Rachel Dean.
00:43:48If you'll excuse me for a minute.
00:43:49Oh, of course, yeah.
00:43:54Excuse me, Mrs. Dean?
00:43:56Yes, may I talk to you for a moment?
00:43:59Why?
00:43:59Well, first, I'm very sorry for your loss.
00:44:03I'm Ainsley McGregor.
00:44:06McGregor related to Sheriff McGregor?
00:44:08He's my brother.
00:44:09You were at the medical examiner's office today, too.
00:44:12What were you doing there?
00:44:14Um, Dr. Stevens is a friend.
00:44:17You often visit him at the morgue?
00:44:20Mrs. Dean, I'm a criminologist, and I'm trying to help find out who killed your husband.
00:44:24We know who killed him.
00:44:26It was that awful man from the winery.
00:44:28No, that's just it.
00:44:28I'm certain he didn't do it.
00:44:30Of course he did.
00:44:31Did you argue with your husband here at the diner the night before he was killed?
00:44:35What business is that of yours?
00:44:37There are witnesses that say they saw you two arguing,
00:44:40and that they overheard your husband was going to divorce you.
00:44:42No.
00:44:43That was never going to happen.
00:44:44The person you should be talking to is his daughter.
00:44:49She poisoned Rick against me.
00:44:50Bridget?
00:44:52If you have some kind of information that Caldwell didn't do it,
00:44:56then the person you should be talking to is Bridget.
00:44:58She's resented her father her whole life,
00:45:01especially since he divorced his first wife.
00:45:04She never even gave me a chance,
00:45:05even though Richard and I were very happy together.
00:45:07We're very much in love.
00:45:09So you know Michael?
00:45:11Well, no.
00:45:12I met him at a dinner once.
00:45:13I wouldn't say that I know him.
00:45:15Where were you when your husband was killed, Mrs. Dean?
00:45:18Are you here in some kind of an official capacity?
00:45:22Well, no.
00:45:24Okay, well, then this interrogation is over.
00:45:26Okay, if you have nothing to hide,
00:45:28then why don't you just answer my questions?
00:45:30I saw that you have a band-aid on your hand.
00:45:31How did you get that cut?
00:45:32That is none of your business.
00:45:43Miss McGregor.
00:45:50I do not take kindly to having my integrity questioned.
00:45:55When that happens, there are severe consequences.
00:45:57Hi, George.
00:46:17Oh, I'm so happy to see you, too.
00:46:20Yes.
00:46:20The date?
00:46:22Well, kind of got interrupted.
00:46:24It was off to a good start, too,
00:46:26but you know how I am when I get distracted.
00:46:29We still had a nice dinner, though.
00:46:33Okay, I'm coming.
00:46:34You got to go out?
00:46:37I got the message.
00:46:39I'm coming.
00:46:39There you go.
00:46:50Oh, George.
00:46:52What if I got myself into?
00:47:05So think of a crime as a room with people inside
00:47:08and others outside.
00:47:10And the people inside have their experience
00:47:12of what happens from the perspective
00:47:14of where they are in the room when the crime happens.
00:47:17Their experience is subjective.
00:47:20Now, the others, the people on the outside,
00:47:23the investigators, the criminologists, the forensics team,
00:47:26they're all viewing the room as two-dimensional,
00:47:29like a photograph.
00:47:32Okay, so your job as a criminologist
00:47:34is to observe everything you can from this spot,
00:47:37but then also put yourselves into the perspectives
00:47:40of the people inside the room.
00:47:42All right, class is done.
00:47:44Don't forget to read your observational study sheets
00:47:46that I gave you for next class.
00:47:47Professor McGregor, can we speak to you, please?
00:47:57Lily, sure.
00:47:58We heard about your book club.
00:48:00And we'd like to join and help with the investigation.
00:48:02Uh, it's not my book club,
00:48:05and there isn't an investigation.
00:48:07It's, uh...
00:48:08How did you hear about it anyway?
00:48:10Gladys Whedon.
00:48:11She's my grandmother.
00:48:12Oh, of course she is.
00:48:14She knows I'm studying criminology
00:48:16and thought it would be a good idea
00:48:17for me to attend the meetings.
00:48:18Your next one's tomorrow night, right?
00:48:20Uh, yeah, but I don't think it would be a good idea
00:48:22for the two of you to be a part of it.
00:48:25Especially you, Kevin.
00:48:26I mean, my brother would be irate if he found out.
00:48:28Then we won't tell him.
00:48:29He never lets me help out with anything important.
00:48:31Well, that's because you're an intern
00:48:33at the sheriff's station.
00:48:34Deputy trainee.
00:48:36I know we can help solve the case.
00:48:38And we'll get to see what you're teaching us in real life.
00:48:40We're not solving the case.
00:48:42The sheriff's department is.
00:48:43And you've seen up in my class.
00:48:45Well, my grandmother said she saw that Rachel Dean woman
00:48:47go into the dry cleaners yesterday.
00:48:49How does she even know who Rachel is?
00:48:50She and Kevin's Aunt Maureen have been snooping.
00:48:53They're good snoopers.
00:48:54And that's why we want to come to the meetings
00:48:55so we can help figure out what's important and what's not.
00:48:58Have you asked your parents about this?
00:49:00We're adults.
00:49:02We can drive, we can vote, and we can attend meetings.
00:49:05Right.
00:49:07Okay, you can come and observe for now.
00:49:09And I'm asking your grandmother to move the meeting up
00:49:11to tonight, 6 p.m.
00:49:13We'll be there.
00:49:14Yes!
00:49:22I forgot to ask you, how was your time with Professor Slay?
00:49:25You know, it was awfully nice of him
00:49:26to let you hang out in his office,
00:49:28this doggie, while I was teaching.
00:49:31George McGregor, I think you have a crush
00:49:33on Professor Slay's dog.
00:49:36Well, you have good taste.
00:49:37She's a beauty.
00:49:37And very well-behaved.
00:49:40Maybe she'll be a good influence on you.
00:49:43What?
00:49:43I'm joking.
00:49:44Don't be so sensitive.
00:49:45Hi.
00:49:59We need to talk.
00:50:01Hey, Georgie.
00:50:02How you doing, pal?
00:50:03Is there somewhere we could chat?
00:50:07Sure.
00:50:07Why don't we chat in the art gallery
00:50:08so that the entire building doesn't think
00:50:10you're about to arrest your own sister?
00:50:12That's not off the table.
00:50:14Would you like some coffee?
00:50:16No.
00:50:16I would not like some coffee.
00:50:18Rude.
00:50:19Grandma used to always say
00:50:20you were so contrary,
00:50:21you'd float upstream.
00:50:23Grandma was crazy about me.
00:50:24True.
00:50:25But she also said
00:50:26you were quite cantankerous.
00:50:27Quit stalling.
00:50:29What are you doing?
00:50:31And I feel like
00:50:32that's too broad of a question.
00:50:33I mean, today in class,
00:50:34we were talking about
00:50:36observational procedure
00:50:38and how you should put yourselves
00:50:40into the shoes of...
00:50:40Ainsley.
00:50:42You're talking to witnesses?
00:50:43You're talking to suspects?
00:50:44You're getting your book club
00:50:45all riled up?
00:50:46No.
00:50:47I'm not the one riling them up.
00:50:48They riled themselves.
00:50:50Really?
00:50:50They're self-rilers?
00:50:52Yes.
00:50:52They're quite good at it.
00:50:54And it's not my book club, actually.
00:50:56Well, whatever it is,
00:50:57it's drawing too much attention to you.
00:51:00I went by your house this morning
00:51:01to check on you.
00:51:02Well, I wasn't at my house.
00:51:03I was at class this morning.
00:51:04Yeah, I know that.
00:51:05I forgot, but I remember now.
00:51:07Anyway, you know what I saw there?
00:51:09A threatening sign
00:51:10taped on my back door.
00:51:11I know.
00:51:11I didn't touch it
00:51:12because I thought
00:51:13we might need it for evidence.
00:51:14No, no, no.
00:51:15No, we don't need anything.
00:51:17I need because it's my job,
00:51:19not yours.
00:51:21You don't need to be helping out
00:51:22with these investigations
00:51:22because you're not in Chicago anymore
00:51:24with a police department
00:51:25who couldn't protect you, by the way.
00:51:27You're here in Sweet River
00:51:29with a brother who can,
00:51:30and that's all I care about.
00:51:31Please, just focus on Bless Your Arts.
00:51:36I am.
00:51:37And I was going to tell you
00:51:38about the sign.
00:51:40You should have told me about it
00:51:41the second you found it.
00:51:42The second you found it.
00:51:43Well, Grandma said it's rude
00:51:44to call anyone after 9 p.m.
00:51:46Will you stop it?
00:51:47Instead, you go back
00:51:48into your house alone.
00:51:49With George.
00:51:50Oh, forgive me.
00:51:51You were with George.
00:51:52Alone in the house
00:51:53with someone outside
00:51:54posting threatening notes.
00:51:55You should have called me.
00:51:56At least you know now.
00:52:00You said you were talking to suspects.
00:52:02You're referring to Rachel Dean,
00:52:04aren't you?
00:52:05Rachel's at the top of our list.
00:52:07No. No.
00:52:09You know who you should be talking to
00:52:11is Rick Dean's daughter, Bridget.
00:52:13There was bad blood
00:52:14between her and Rachel,
00:52:15and even more
00:52:16between her and her father.
00:52:18And they had a number of reasons
00:52:19to have possibly killed him.
00:52:21And at the very minimum,
00:52:22it isn't cut and dry
00:52:23that Michael did it.
00:52:24Oh, are you gonna charge him?
00:52:26You know you have to
00:52:27within 48 hours
00:52:28since he's been in jail.
00:52:28I know the rules.
00:52:30And I'm not talking to you
00:52:31about this anymore.
00:52:32I can help.
00:52:34I'm not disputing that.
00:52:36I just...
00:52:38I really don't want you to.
00:52:42I don't want you to...
00:52:44Get hurt.
00:52:45I know.
00:52:47And what happened in Chicago
00:52:48was terrifying,
00:52:50but I don't want to live
00:52:50the rest of my life in fear.
00:52:51You shouldn't be taking
00:52:52unnecessary risks.
00:52:53If I'm helping,
00:52:54if my best friend needs me,
00:52:56it's not unnecessary.
00:52:59I'm an adult.
00:53:00I can drive.
00:53:01I can vote.
00:53:03Where did that come from?
00:53:04Yeah, I know.
00:53:05It sounded way better
00:53:06when my students said it.
00:53:09Okay, look.
00:53:10I know you don't have
00:53:11the murder weapon,
00:53:12and that Rick Dean died
00:53:13by a stab wound to the side.
00:53:15Michael's prints
00:53:16were on the shards
00:53:17that we found at the crime scene.
00:53:18Ryan, Michael's prints
00:53:19are gonna be on all of the bottles.
00:53:20He put those bottles
00:53:21on the shelves
00:53:22in the tasting room.
00:53:23You know that.
00:53:23Of course I know that.
00:53:25What we need to be asking is,
00:53:27how did Rick get to the winery
00:53:28that day?
00:53:29His car wasn't there?
00:53:30Did he take a car service?
00:53:31A taxi?
00:53:32Why would he do that?
00:53:34We're checking out
00:53:34the car services.
00:53:36For someone could have
00:53:36been with him.
00:53:37Someone who killed him.
00:53:38I promise I'm gonna look
00:53:40into all of it.
00:53:41I'm pretty good at this stuff,
00:53:42too, if you recall.
00:53:43No, you're great at it.
00:53:45But together,
00:53:45we'd be phenomenal.
00:53:47Look, we know the crime
00:53:49must have occurred
00:53:49a short time before
00:53:50Shannon and I
00:53:51got to the scene.
00:53:52When I went to check
00:53:53for the pulse,
00:53:53the body was still warmish.
00:53:55Rigor hadn't set in.
00:53:56Now, I know it doesn't
00:53:58look good for Michael.
00:53:59He was close by.
00:54:01The thing that bugs me
00:54:02about Michael
00:54:02is that he's right-handed.
00:54:04Yeah, you would have
00:54:04to use your dominant hand
00:54:06to have the force
00:54:06to stab someone
00:54:07the way Rick Dean
00:54:08was stabbed.
00:54:09Yeah.
00:54:10We have to find
00:54:10that murder weapon.
00:54:12Well, I'm headed
00:54:12to the winery now
00:54:13with a search warrant.
00:54:14Oh, well, I'm coming.
00:54:16What?
00:54:17No, you're not.
00:54:17Not with me.
00:54:18Yes, I am.
00:54:19I am going to be there
00:54:20for my friend.
00:54:22Stand by her side.
00:54:22Thank you for coming
00:54:28here today, Mr. Preston.
00:54:30You've given me
00:54:30a lot to think about.
00:54:31I'm very sorry
00:54:32about your personal troubles.
00:54:33I would like for my company
00:54:34to take away
00:54:34your financial worries
00:54:36regardless of what
00:54:36happens with your husband.
00:54:37He's innocent.
00:54:38Oh, sure he is.
00:54:40Sadly, the justice system
00:54:42does move very slowly.
00:54:44I know the financials
00:54:46I shared with you earlier
00:54:47don't look good,
00:54:48but I promise you
00:54:49that is just a blip.
00:54:50We were actually doing
00:54:51really well before.
00:54:53I am aware
00:54:53of the vagaries of business.
00:54:54I will do more due diligence,
00:54:56but I am confident
00:54:56that I can make you
00:54:57a fair price for the winery.
00:54:58A win-win,
00:54:59as I like to say.
00:55:01That's a huge relief.
00:55:02What's this?
00:55:08Oh, no.
00:55:17Good morning, Mrs. Caldwell.
00:55:19We have a warrant
00:55:19to search your house
00:55:20and the winery of premises.
00:55:23Ains.
00:55:25Uh, it's going to be fine.
00:55:26I'll stay with you.
00:55:31What are they looking for?
00:55:33The murder weapon.
00:55:35Uh, Mr. Preston,
00:55:37I am so sorry
00:55:38about all of this.
00:55:39I, uh,
00:55:39I don't know what to say.
00:55:42Your personal business
00:55:43is exactly that.
00:55:44Personal
00:55:45and none
00:55:45of my business.
00:55:47Now,
00:55:47it doesn't deter
00:55:48my desire
00:55:48to purchase the winery
00:55:49nor my commitment
00:55:50to you
00:55:51to make a fair price.
00:55:53Win-win.
00:55:54I will be in touch.
00:55:56I will think
00:55:57positive thoughts
00:55:58for you.
00:56:00You're selling the winery?
00:56:03I don't know.
00:56:04I might have to.
00:56:05This is all
00:56:06so overwhelming.
00:56:08No,
00:56:08you have Danny
00:56:09and we can pitch in
00:56:10and help you
00:56:11until Michael's back.
00:56:12If Michael gets back.
00:56:13Shannon,
00:56:13you can't think that way.
00:56:15We're going to prove
00:56:15that Michael is innocent.
00:56:16We're going to find out
00:56:17who really did this.
00:56:18You don't have to sell.
00:56:20There's more to it
00:56:21than that.
00:56:22The winery
00:56:23has been slipping
00:56:23for a few months now.
00:56:24We're falling deeper
00:56:25and deeper
00:56:26into the red.
00:56:27I didn't want
00:56:28to say anything before
00:56:29because I was just embarrassed.
00:56:32Yeah,
00:56:33how's that possible?
00:56:34You said
00:56:35that you had
00:56:36your best summer
00:56:36in sales
00:56:37and I watched
00:56:38the bottles
00:56:39fly off the shelves.
00:56:40I don't get it either.
00:56:41The numbers don't lie.
00:56:43I mean,
00:56:43that's why Michael
00:56:44was talking to Rick Dean
00:56:46in the first place.
00:56:47Neither of us
00:56:47ever liked him
00:56:48because he was so desperate.
00:56:50Fortunately,
00:56:51Mr. Preston
00:56:52has come along now.
00:56:54Yeah,
00:56:54who's that Preston guy?
00:56:55He's got some
00:56:56big company in Houston.
00:56:58Like Rick Dean?
00:56:59Yeah,
00:56:59but much bigger.
00:57:01Wineries are a small
00:57:02part of their portfolio,
00:57:03but they're looking
00:57:03to grow it.
00:57:06What's his main business?
00:57:08Like all the big companies
00:57:09in Texas.
00:57:10Oil.
00:57:15Then what's he doing
00:57:16here in hell country?
00:57:16What does that mean?
00:57:23Sheriff.
00:57:25I gotta call you back.
00:57:26What do you got?
00:57:27We found this bloody shirt
00:57:28inside Michael Caldwell's
00:57:29locker.
00:57:30And inside that shirt.
00:57:32Shard of glass.
00:57:34Bingo.
00:57:37Okay,
00:57:38so we found
00:57:38the murder weapon.
00:57:38With the discovery
00:57:46of the murder weapon
00:57:47in Michael's locker,
00:57:49the sheriff's office
00:57:49really doesn't have
00:57:50any choice
00:57:51but to charge Michael.
00:57:52But Michael
00:57:53didn't do this.
00:57:54He couldn't.
00:57:55And I've known him
00:57:56since he was a boy.
00:57:57He's as fine a man
00:57:58as there is
00:57:59in this town.
00:58:00Thank you,
00:58:00Mrs. Whedon.
00:58:02We're here,
00:58:03Aunt Maureen.
00:58:04Oh,
00:58:05good.
00:58:06I'm so glad
00:58:07you're kidding.
00:58:07We do really
00:58:08want to help.
00:58:08Hi, Grandma.
00:58:10The more
00:58:10the merrier, dear.
00:58:11Grab a chair.
00:58:13Does that invitation
00:58:14apply to me too?
00:58:16How did you know
00:58:17about the...
00:58:19Never mind.
00:58:21Sweet river.
00:58:23Anyone who wants
00:58:24to help is welcome.
00:58:25Especially you.
00:58:30Okay,
00:58:31whenever we start
00:58:31an investigation,
00:58:32the first thing
00:58:33we need to determine
00:58:34is who our most
00:58:35likely suspect is.
00:58:36So,
00:58:37who had means,
00:58:38motive,
00:58:38and opportunity?
00:58:40Exactly.
00:58:40Well,
00:58:41I think we start
00:58:41with Rachel Dean.
00:58:42From all I've been hearing,
00:58:43she wasn't very happy
00:58:44with him.
00:58:44Right.
00:58:45And Rick,
00:58:46with the encouragement
00:58:46of his daughter Bridget,
00:58:48was planning on divorcing
00:58:49Rachel.
00:58:49He recently told her that.
00:58:51Sounds like her money tree
00:58:52was going away.
00:58:53Well,
00:58:53Bridget thinks that Rachel
00:58:54killed her dad.
00:58:57Well,
00:58:57yeah,
00:58:57well,
00:58:58she came into the store
00:58:59to get a few things,
00:58:59paper the card.
00:59:00I saw her name on it,
00:59:01so I asked her
00:59:02about her dad.
00:59:03She was willing
00:59:04to talk to you?
00:59:05Only all too willing.
00:59:06She was in a horn-tossing mood.
00:59:08She said that she was
00:59:09absolutely sure
00:59:10that Rachel had killed Rick.
00:59:12Said that he told Rachel
00:59:13that not only
00:59:14was he going to divorce her,
00:59:15but he was going to
00:59:15cut her out of the will
00:59:16and leave everything to Bridget.
00:59:18Of course,
00:59:19you know,
00:59:19you didn't get the chance
00:59:19to do that.
00:59:20So it all still goes to Rachel.
00:59:21Yeah,
00:59:22but Bridget said
00:59:22she's going to fight it.
00:59:23She still harbors
00:59:24a lot of anger
00:59:25towards her father
00:59:26for leaving her mother
00:59:26and for,
00:59:27you know,
00:59:27leaving her too.
00:59:28That's motive for Rachel.
00:59:30And maybe Bridget.
00:59:32Yeah,
00:59:32but why would Bridget
00:59:34kill him
00:59:34before he changed
00:59:35his will
00:59:36and made her
00:59:37his beneficiary?
00:59:38Maybe he wouldn't
00:59:38agree to do it
00:59:39and just made her
00:59:40madder at him.
00:59:41And angry people
00:59:42will do things
00:59:42they don't normally do.
00:59:43I've got some information
00:59:44that I'd like to share.
00:59:46Gladys and I have been
00:59:47doing some investigating.
00:59:48Snooping.
00:59:50You might as well
00:59:50call her what it is.
00:59:51Snooping, then.
00:59:52We saw Rachel
00:59:54going to the dry cleaner
00:59:55the day after the murder.
00:59:57We've been keeping an eye
00:59:58on her since she came
00:59:59to town.
00:59:59Yeah, we think
01:00:00she's still the nickels
01:00:01off a dead man's eyes.
01:00:02So, we went in
01:00:03to see Fred.
01:00:04He's been doing
01:00:05the dry cleaning
01:00:05for years.
01:00:06Mind here,
01:00:06he does a really good job,
01:00:08but he did lose
01:00:08that button.
01:00:09Uh, Maureen,
01:00:10what did you two find out?
01:00:12She brought a dress
01:00:13in that had wine stains
01:00:14on it.
01:00:15Said it was couture
01:00:16and...
01:00:17Couture.
01:00:18And he better
01:00:19not ruin it.
01:00:19Said she spilled
01:00:20a bottle,
01:00:21but Fred said
01:00:21you don't spill wine
01:00:22the way that dress looked.
01:00:24Almost like it exploded.
01:00:25Mm-hmm.
01:00:26Like it would have
01:00:27you hit somebody
01:00:27over the head with it.
01:00:28I'd say so.
01:00:29How did she get
01:00:30to the winery?
01:00:31She wasn't there
01:00:32when you found the body,
01:00:32right, Insane?
01:00:33No, she wasn't, but...
01:00:34Well, she could have
01:00:35come with him
01:00:36and left in that car
01:00:37after she told him.
01:00:37Yeah, that's certainly possible.
01:00:39And Ryan told me
01:00:40that the wound was inflicted
01:00:41by the attacker's left hand.
01:00:43Rachel had a bandage
01:00:44on her left hand.
01:00:45I saw it at the diner.
01:00:46If you stabbed someone
01:00:47with a shard of glass,
01:00:48you'd almost certainly
01:00:49cut yourself.
01:00:50Well, unless you're
01:00:50wearing gloves.
01:00:51Well, Rachel had gloves.
01:00:52I saw them in her pocket.
01:00:54And there was a small tear
01:00:55in the index finger
01:00:56of the left hand.
01:00:57Sorry, uh, quick question.
01:00:59How did you see them
01:01:00if they're in your pocket?
01:01:02Observational technique.
01:01:03You don't miss a thing.
01:01:04It's a big part
01:01:05of being a criminologist.
01:01:09Yeah.
01:01:10It's impressive.
01:01:12Sounds like snooping to me.
01:01:15Well, the evidence
01:01:16points to Rachel's hand injury
01:01:17as being something
01:01:18more than a coincidence.
01:01:19I'm sorry for Rick Dean,
01:01:20but I really hope
01:01:21all this is true
01:01:22for Michael's sake.
01:01:24Of course.
01:01:25Are we missing
01:01:26anybody else as a suspect?
01:01:28Did Rick Dean
01:01:29have other enemies,
01:01:30maybe business rivals?
01:01:31If he's going to be a guy
01:01:32like that,
01:01:32I'd have an enemies list
01:01:33a mile long.
01:01:35Shannon, why do you think
01:01:36Rick was so keen
01:01:36on buying the winery?
01:01:38I don't know.
01:01:39When we first met him,
01:01:40he was very charming.
01:01:42And then when we told him
01:01:43we weren't interested
01:01:44in selling,
01:01:45we were just seeking
01:01:46an investment,
01:01:46he became very aggressive.
01:01:48He's probably a man
01:01:49not used to hearing no.
01:01:51I mean,
01:01:51the winery's well run
01:01:52and it makes good wine.
01:01:53Isn't that enough
01:01:54to justify his interest in it?
01:01:56Maybe,
01:01:57but something
01:01:58just doesn't feel right.
01:02:00All the evidence
01:02:01is pointed to Rachel,
01:02:02but I feel like
01:02:02we're missing another suspect.
01:02:04And I think it has to do
01:02:05with why Rick
01:02:06was so intent
01:02:07on buying the winery.
01:02:08I need to do more digging.
01:02:11It sounds like
01:02:11it's time for a break.
01:02:13Do you need one?
01:02:14Oh, cookies.
01:02:15I've got lots of cookies.
01:02:16Love your cookies.
01:02:18Okay, well,
01:02:20everyone can take a break then.
01:02:24Thank you for
01:02:25not putting Michael's name
01:02:26on the suspect list.
01:02:29You know,
01:02:30I ordered some more
01:02:30of those shirts in the store
01:02:31like you picked up on Sunday,
01:02:32so next time you're in,
01:02:33you'll have more choices.
01:02:34Oh, great.
01:02:34Yeah, I really liked that one.
01:02:36I'm glad.
01:02:36And you,
01:02:37um,
01:02:39I'm escorting you home tonight.
01:02:41Oh, you don't have to do that.
01:02:42I have George.
01:02:43With all due respect,
01:02:44George is a lover,
01:02:45not a fighter.
01:02:45I think Jake's right.
01:02:47And if someone like Rachel
01:02:48left that note on your door
01:02:49threatening you,
01:02:50you should not be alone.
01:02:51How did you know
01:02:51about that note?
01:02:52Well, you got a threatening note?
01:02:54I didn't know that.
01:02:54Well, that settles it.
01:02:55I'm following you home.
01:02:56No ifs, ands, or buts.
01:02:57You don't have to do that.
01:02:59It's my job.
01:03:00Your brother assigned it.
01:03:02He did what?
01:03:05He asked me
01:03:06to keep an eye on you,
01:03:07and for good reason,
01:03:08it seems.
01:03:10Okay.
01:03:12But the least you could do
01:03:13is come in for a cup of coffee
01:03:14and some cake.
01:03:15Hmm.
01:03:16What kind of cake?
01:03:18Yeah, you're right.
01:03:19All cake is good.
01:03:22All right, back at it.
01:03:23Okay.
01:03:23Okay.
01:03:31Here you go.
01:03:32Well, that is not a slice.
01:03:34That is a slab.
01:03:36You complaining?
01:03:37No, ma'am.
01:03:38It's Texas size,
01:03:39and it does look delicious.
01:03:42Mmm.
01:03:46Shovelling it in too fast.
01:03:47Oh, it's just icing.
01:03:49I'm sure it'll come out.
01:03:50Oh, I hope so.
01:03:51I really like this shirt.
01:03:55Shirt?
01:03:56Jake,
01:03:57when did Danny come in
01:03:58to buy his shirt on Sunday?
01:04:00I reckon,
01:04:01I don't know,
01:04:02quarter to two?
01:04:03Came in the store
01:04:04when you bought a new work shirt.
01:04:05I remember thinking
01:04:06it was funny, too,
01:04:07because the shirt
01:04:07that he was wearing
01:04:08was just way too big for him.
01:04:09Hmm.
01:04:09That is funny.
01:04:12Shannon and I
01:04:12discovered the body
01:04:13at 1.30.
01:04:14We know the murder
01:04:15occurred shortly before that
01:04:16because,
01:04:17as I told Ryan,
01:04:18the body was still
01:04:19a bit warm.
01:04:20what's it,
01:04:2210 minutes from
01:04:22the winery to town?
01:04:24About that, yeah.
01:04:25Danny arrived
01:04:26at the crime scene
01:04:26at 2.15.
01:04:27I remember
01:04:28because I looked
01:04:29at my watch
01:04:29thinking Ryan
01:04:30and his team
01:04:31were working
01:04:31too slowly
01:04:32to process the scene
01:04:33and I was worried
01:04:34about Shannon.
01:04:37But how does that
01:04:38explain the wine
01:04:38on Rachel's dress?
01:04:40Yeah,
01:04:40she's still
01:04:40the most likely suspect
01:04:41at this point.
01:04:42I called my brother
01:04:43from the car
01:04:44on the way over
01:04:44and they're all over it.
01:04:46They recovered
01:04:47the dress
01:04:48before it was cleaned
01:04:49and they're bringing
01:04:49Rachel in.
01:04:50It has to be her.
01:04:51It has to be.
01:04:52And from everything
01:04:53I heard,
01:04:53Danny,
01:04:53he's been nothing
01:04:54but good to Michael
01:04:55and Shannon
01:04:55since he's been in town.
01:04:57I mean,
01:04:57did he even know Rick Dean?
01:05:00You're right.
01:05:02And I could just see
01:05:03the look on my brother's face
01:05:04if I asked him
01:05:05to question Danny
01:05:06because he bought a shirt
01:05:08when all the evidence
01:05:09is pointing to Rachel.
01:05:12No, George,
01:05:13you can't have any cake.
01:05:14I'm sorry.
01:05:15You remember
01:05:15what happened last time?
01:05:17He literally ate.
01:05:19Uncle and Ryan.
01:05:37Jake,
01:05:37the killer was just
01:05:38on my front porch.
01:05:43I've told you
01:05:44I didn't kill my husband.
01:05:46I couldn't.
01:05:48I loved him.
01:05:49And yet he was going
01:05:50to divorce you.
01:05:52That never would have happened.
01:05:55His daughter
01:05:56made him believe
01:05:57terrible,
01:05:58false things.
01:05:59But I would have
01:06:01convinced him.
01:06:02We checked into
01:06:02your personal finances.
01:06:04You stood to lose a lot
01:06:05if you got divorced.
01:06:06I didn't marry Rick
01:06:07for his money
01:06:08and I don't care
01:06:09about keeping it.
01:06:10Yes,
01:06:10I've enjoyed this lifestyle
01:06:12but what really
01:06:13mattered to me was
01:06:14what really mattered
01:06:18to you was what?
01:06:20It was that he didn't
01:06:21trust me.
01:06:23He wouldn't even
01:06:24listen to me.
01:06:26He was under
01:06:27so much pressure
01:06:28because his business
01:06:29was failing.
01:06:29He was determined
01:06:30to buy that stupid
01:06:32winery.
01:06:33His business was failing?
01:06:34Yes.
01:06:37He was a very proud man.
01:06:38He was determined
01:06:39to save it.
01:06:41And how would
01:06:42buying a winery
01:06:43in Sweet River
01:06:44do that?
01:06:44I don't know.
01:06:46He didn't talk to me
01:06:47about that kind of stuff.
01:06:48That was part
01:06:48of my frustration.
01:06:50Part of why
01:06:51I got so angry.
01:06:56Go ahead.
01:07:00I know you have
01:07:01my dress.
01:07:02I'm sure by now
01:07:03you know that
01:07:04the wine stains on it
01:07:05matched the wine
01:07:05from the bottle
01:07:05Rick was hit with.
01:07:07And you won't find
01:07:08my fingerprints on it
01:07:09because I was
01:07:10wearing gloves.
01:07:12They're ruined now.
01:07:14The glass from the bottle
01:07:15ripped a hole in them.
01:07:17I cut my hand.
01:07:19So you were at
01:07:20the winery the day
01:07:20that your husband
01:07:21was killed
01:07:22and you hit him
01:07:23with a wine bottle.
01:07:24I drove over with him.
01:07:28He was determined
01:07:29to get Michael
01:07:30to sell him to the winery.
01:07:31Whatever it takes,
01:07:32he kept on saying.
01:07:34We argued on the way over.
01:07:36He asked me to wait
01:07:37in the car
01:07:37while he went into
01:07:38the tasting room
01:07:39to meet with Michael.
01:07:42I was so scared
01:07:43by the look on his face
01:07:44when he got out of the car.
01:07:47What happened next,
01:07:48Mrs. Dean?
01:07:49I saw Michael
01:07:50storm out of the winery.
01:07:53Rick wasn't with him
01:07:54and I was scared
01:07:55so I went in
01:07:56to check on him
01:07:56when he was crazy.
01:07:58I tried to calm him down.
01:08:03I told him
01:08:04whatever happened,
01:08:05it didn't matter
01:08:05as long as we had each other.
01:08:11And he yelled at me.
01:08:13He told me it was over.
01:08:15Everything was over.
01:08:20I have a temper.
01:08:21I'm not proud of it
01:08:24but in that moment
01:08:25all my frustration
01:08:27just
01:08:27boiled over
01:08:29and
01:08:30it's okay.
01:08:34I grabbed the wine bottle
01:08:35and
01:08:35I hit him
01:08:37in the back of the head
01:08:37with it.
01:08:39He went down
01:08:39immediately.
01:08:40He was unconscious
01:08:41but
01:08:41I checked on him
01:08:43and he was alive.
01:08:45He was alive.
01:08:46I panicked.
01:08:50I ran out.
01:08:52I got in the car
01:08:52and
01:08:53I drove away.
01:08:58I've been sorry
01:08:59ever since.
01:09:04It's okay.
01:09:04No.
01:09:06It's alright.
01:09:16I expected from her
01:09:22but you?
01:09:23Well,
01:09:24you were the one
01:09:24that told me
01:09:24to keep an eye on her.
01:09:25I thought maybe
01:09:25I'd just help her
01:09:26with the case
01:09:27while I was keeping her safe.
01:09:28It's not her case.
01:09:29I'm right here
01:09:30and it was the book club's tip
01:09:31that helped you
01:09:32get Rachel's dress, right?
01:09:34And you brought her in
01:09:34for questioning
01:09:35based on that?
01:09:36Yeah.
01:09:37She just confessed
01:09:38to hitting him
01:09:39with a bottle.
01:09:39But not killing him,
01:09:40right?
01:09:41No.
01:09:42How did you know that?
01:09:44By observing her behavior.
01:09:46She can flash anger
01:09:47but she recovers.
01:09:49I can see her
01:09:49hitting her husband
01:09:50with a bottle
01:09:50in a moment of rage
01:09:51but I can't see her
01:09:52finishing him off
01:09:53by stabbing him.
01:09:54She would consider
01:09:55what she'd done.
01:09:56She'd stop.
01:09:59That's exactly
01:10:00what she said.
01:10:02Somebody else
01:10:02killed Rick Dean.
01:10:04Somebody other
01:10:05than Michael Caldwell.
01:10:06Somebody left-handed.
01:10:08And somebody
01:10:09who was on my property
01:10:10last night
01:10:11leaving that sign
01:10:12on my front door.
01:10:16ready for another day,
01:10:24George?
01:10:26Yeah.
01:10:33Morning.
01:10:34You're here early, Ace?
01:10:36What happened
01:10:36with Rachel Dean
01:10:37at the sheriff's office
01:10:38this morning?
01:10:39How did you...
01:10:39How did you...
01:10:40she confessed
01:10:42to hitting him
01:10:43with a bottle
01:10:43but not stabbing him?
01:10:45And I believe that.
01:10:47She wouldn't have
01:10:47the wherewithal
01:10:48to plant that murder weapon
01:10:49in Michael's locker.
01:10:50Bridget Dean, then.
01:10:51No.
01:10:52Bridget's your classic
01:10:53red herring.
01:10:54Morning.
01:10:57Why was Rick Dean
01:10:58so desperate
01:10:59to buy the winery?
01:11:00You know,
01:11:02Rachel told my brother
01:11:03that his own business
01:11:04was failing,
01:11:05so...
01:11:06how would buying
01:11:06a winery save it?
01:11:07Hey, Danny,
01:11:10do you know
01:11:11this other potential buyer,
01:11:13Mr. Preston?
01:11:15Never heard of him,
01:11:16but I wouldn't be likely to.
01:11:17I'd never heard
01:11:18of Rick Dean either.
01:11:19I studied winemaking
01:11:20and computer science
01:11:21in school,
01:11:21not investing.
01:11:22Well, we sure have been
01:11:23happy to have you
01:11:24here in Sweet River, Danny.
01:11:25And I know
01:11:26that Shannon and Michael,
01:11:27they really appreciate you.
01:11:29Sweet River.
01:11:29Sweet River.
01:11:35She's off again.
01:11:36George,
01:11:37if you don't do
01:11:38something about her,
01:11:39folks around here
01:11:40are going to think
01:11:40she's a few pickles
01:11:41short of a barrel.
01:11:44Barrel?
01:11:45Barrel, yes.
01:11:47What are you talking about?
01:11:51Oil.
01:11:52Why oil?
01:11:53I said pickles.
01:11:55Are you feeling okay, Ainsley?
01:11:56No, no, I'm fine.
01:11:58The Sweet River
01:11:59was named after
01:11:59sweet crude oil
01:12:00found a couple
01:12:01of counties over, right?
01:12:02Yeah, that's the history.
01:12:04Has there ever been
01:12:05any oil found
01:12:06around here?
01:12:07No.
01:12:07I mean, there's rumors
01:12:08of oil west of town,
01:12:10but it's never
01:12:11come to anything.
01:12:12This is wine country.
01:12:14We're nowhere close
01:12:14to the Permian Basin,
01:12:16and that's where
01:12:16most of the oil
01:12:17in Texas is found.
01:12:20Right.
01:12:24Okay, well,
01:12:25we have a big day
01:12:26ahead of us
01:12:26at Bless Your Arts.
01:12:27I'll go get
01:12:29the signs outside.
01:12:31You can help me
01:12:32get set up.
01:12:34Oh, Mrs. Whedon,
01:12:36please don't.
01:12:38George's got it
01:12:39made here, doesn't he?
01:12:39Yeah, he sure does.
01:12:43Hey, Danny,
01:12:44you know,
01:12:46Michael never signed
01:12:47his booth lease
01:12:47for BYA.
01:12:49I have it right here.
01:12:50Do you mind signing it, please?
01:12:51Sure,
01:12:52but I'm not an owner.
01:12:53Oh, that's fine.
01:12:55I keep it really informal.
01:12:56It's just from my records.
01:13:06Have a great day.
01:13:07Oh, I'm only here
01:13:08to restock.
01:13:08Don's gonna watch
01:13:09the booth today.
01:13:09I've got some winery
01:13:10stuff to take care of.
01:13:12That's why I love
01:13:13Sweet River.
01:13:14Everyone helps each other.
01:13:26Where's the fire?
01:13:33Funny.
01:13:34That's just one
01:13:35of my better traits.
01:13:36I got your text.
01:13:37What's up?
01:13:38Hey, buddy.
01:13:38Do you know anything
01:13:39about seismic reflection
01:13:40and how to use it
01:13:42to detect whether
01:13:42there's oil underground?
01:13:44Nope.
01:13:44Not one of my better traits
01:13:46and not the first question
01:13:46I thought I'd get asked
01:13:47this morning.
01:13:48Well, look at this.
01:13:50You set off
01:13:50a small-shaped explosion
01:13:52on a cleared area
01:13:53on the ground.
01:13:54The shockwaves
01:13:55travel underground,
01:13:56bounce off the different
01:13:56types of rock
01:13:57and return to the surface.
01:13:58Sensors interpret them
01:14:00to determine
01:14:00the underground layout
01:14:01as a possibility
01:14:02of a petroleum reservoir.
01:14:04So you don't have
01:14:05to drill?
01:14:06Have you heard
01:14:07about the rumors
01:14:08of there being oil
01:14:09west of town?
01:14:10Oh, sure, yeah,
01:14:10but nothing's ever
01:14:11come of that.
01:14:13The Caldwell's winery
01:14:14is out west.
01:14:16Need to see
01:14:16if my brothers
01:14:17had any reports
01:14:18of unexpected activity
01:14:19out there.
01:14:19Oh, I can answer that.
01:14:20Fire department,
01:14:21we had a report
01:14:21of an explosion
01:14:22a couple months
01:14:24ago near there.
01:14:25We searched,
01:14:25but we never found
01:14:26the source.
01:14:27Hmm.
01:14:30Do you know
01:14:31who Jack Preston is?
01:14:32Well, he looks familiar,
01:14:33but no, I don't think
01:14:35I've met him.
01:14:35He owns an oil company
01:14:36in Houston.
01:14:37He was at Shannon's
01:14:38trying to buy
01:14:38the winery yesterday.
01:14:40Oh, that's interesting.
01:14:40Yeah, this is
01:14:41the social media
01:14:42that pictures
01:14:44of his wife
01:14:45and kids
01:14:45from a few years ago.
01:14:51I'll be a dog.
01:14:53Danny.
01:14:56Danny Avery
01:14:57isn't Danny Avery.
01:14:59He's Danny Preston,
01:15:01Jack Preston's son.
01:15:02Wait, you reckon
01:15:02that Danny?
01:15:03I don't reckon,
01:15:03I know.
01:15:04And his grandma
01:15:05used to say,
01:15:05we need to stop
01:15:06hollering down the well
01:15:07and get out
01:15:07to that winery.
01:15:08We have a killer
01:15:09to catch.
01:15:11I'm just gonna say it again,
01:15:12I don't like
01:15:13that we didn't call Ryan.
01:15:14We need proof.
01:15:15Well, then we let
01:15:16the sheriff's office
01:15:16handle it.
01:15:17The fire department,
01:15:17they handle fires.
01:15:18Sheriff's office,
01:15:19they handle proof of a crime.
01:15:20Danny's father's gonna
01:15:21provide him an alibi.
01:15:22I just know it.
01:15:23We have to try
01:15:24to outsmart him.
01:15:25I just wanna go on record
01:15:25that my instincts
01:15:26say this is a bad idea.
01:15:28Well, mine say that
01:15:28this is our best shot
01:15:29at freeing an innocent man.
01:15:36Danny, it's Ainsley!
01:15:38What are you doing?
01:15:39We're not sneaking up on him.
01:15:40Act normal.
01:15:41If I were acting normal,
01:15:42we wouldn't be here.
01:15:44I'll protect you.
01:15:46You are just like your brother.
01:15:49Stubborn as a mule
01:15:50with his heel
01:15:50caught in a stump.
01:15:52Oh, that's a good one.
01:15:53Oh, you like that one?
01:15:53Mm-hmm.
01:15:54Yeah.
01:15:55Ainsley!
01:15:59Hey, Ainsley.
01:16:00Jake?
01:16:01What are y'all doing out here?
01:16:03Shannon's at the coffee shop.
01:16:04Are you going somewhere?
01:16:05Nah, just cleaning up.
01:16:07I want it to be nice
01:16:08when Michael gets back.
01:16:10Heard they brought
01:16:11Rachel Dean in.
01:16:12I'm sure it's only a matter of time
01:16:13till they let Michael go.
01:16:15Rachel didn't confess
01:16:15to the murder, Danny.
01:16:19Well, she must have been
01:16:20involved somehow.
01:16:22When did you discover the oil?
01:16:24Kenny?
01:16:25I don't know
01:16:26what you're talking about.
01:16:27How did Rick Dean
01:16:27find out about it?
01:16:29You're really not
01:16:30making any sense, Ainsley.
01:16:32Well, I kind of think
01:16:33she is Mr. Preston.
01:16:36Did Rick just get in the way
01:16:37or did he actually
01:16:38work in your favor?
01:16:40I mean, your father
01:16:41shows up, right,
01:16:41when it's looking most bleak
01:16:42for Shannon in the winery
01:16:43and makes a strong
01:16:45offer to buy it.
01:16:45That's not what happened.
01:16:47You've been working here
01:16:47long enough to have
01:16:48doctored the winery's books
01:16:49to make it look like
01:16:50it was starting to fail.
01:16:52I did a little digging
01:16:53on the way over here
01:16:54and you're some kind
01:16:55of tech whiz, aren't you?
01:16:56You sure were in college?
01:16:58I've been nothing but good
01:16:59to Michael and Shannon
01:17:00since I've been here.
01:17:01You've got it all wrong.
01:17:02You got in way over your head
01:17:03and you panicked.
01:17:05Fortunately, your father came,
01:17:07picked you up,
01:17:07and took you to town.
01:17:09And then he gave you
01:17:10one of his shirts to wear
01:17:11while you changed out
01:17:12of the bloody one
01:17:13you were wearing.
01:17:14And then, y'all,
01:17:15you pulled up in front
01:17:16of my store
01:17:16to get a new one.
01:17:18And it's just a shame
01:17:18that you and your father
01:17:19aren't closer in size.
01:17:20It wouldn't have stuck out
01:17:21as much.
01:17:23You're not a bad person, Danny.
01:17:24You just did a bad thing
01:17:25that you never meant
01:17:26to happen.
01:17:34I was just here
01:17:35to change the books.
01:17:36And Rick Dean
01:17:37found out about it.
01:17:38He knew my dad
01:17:39found oil out here.
01:17:40He was desperate
01:17:41to save his company
01:17:41and he tried to get
01:17:42to the Caldwells first.
01:17:43Rick, he knew your secrets
01:17:44for your dad.
01:17:46Couldn't touch him.
01:17:49I was going to head
01:17:50into town to meet my father.
01:17:52He was here to make
01:17:53the offer to Michael
01:17:53and to pay off Rick Dean
01:17:55if that's what it was
01:17:55going to take.
01:17:57I heard this ruckus
01:17:58coming from the tasting room
01:17:59and I saw Rachel Dean
01:18:01running out
01:18:01and driving away
01:18:02so I ran to the tasting room.
01:18:05Rick was on the floor
01:18:06but he was coming to
01:18:08and getting to his feet
01:18:09and I told him
01:18:09that I'd help him,
01:18:11that I'd call an ambulance
01:18:11but he lunged at me
01:18:13and said if he was going down
01:18:15so was I
01:18:15and so was my father.
01:18:17He caught me off guard
01:18:18and knocked me to the ground.
01:18:20He was out of his mind.
01:18:22He was choking me.
01:18:26I grabbed the nearest
01:18:31shard of glass
01:18:31and I stabbed him.
01:18:34I panicked.
01:18:35I called my dad
01:18:36and he came and got me
01:18:37but you have to believe me
01:18:38I never set out
01:18:39to hurt anyone.
01:18:40I was going to make sure
01:18:41my dad paid a fair price
01:18:42and that the book stuff
01:18:43was just to encourage
01:18:44them to sell.
01:18:45Then why did you let
01:18:46the sheriff's office
01:18:47believe that Michael
01:18:47had done it?
01:18:48My dad made me.
01:18:50Your dad made you?
01:18:52Danny, come on.
01:18:53You're a grown man.
01:18:54I was scared.
01:18:55He convinced me
01:18:56that the best way
01:18:56to avoid being caught
01:18:57was to pin the blame
01:18:58on someone else.
01:18:59That being caught
01:19:00would ruin my life.
01:19:01I was trying to point
01:19:02you guys to Rachel
01:19:03but my life's ruined anyway.
01:19:08My dad convinced me
01:19:09to plant the shard
01:19:09in Michael's locker.
01:19:11Danny?
01:19:12Stop talking.
01:19:14Dad, no.
01:19:15It's too late,
01:19:16Mr. Preston.
01:19:17Turns out that your son
01:19:18has a conscience
01:19:19even if you don't.
01:19:20There's no way out of this.
01:19:21You have no idea
01:19:23how things work
01:19:24in my world, ma'am.
01:19:25Danny, collect your things
01:19:26and come with me.
01:19:27You don't have to do this,
01:19:28do you?
01:19:28Yes.
01:19:29Okay.
01:19:30He does.
01:19:32We'll see just how much
01:19:33you're able to prove
01:19:33once my lawyers
01:19:34get through with you.
01:19:34Danny, go.
01:19:35Drop your weapon, Preston!
01:19:37No!
01:19:40Stop!
01:19:45Come on.
01:19:47Stop moving.
01:19:47Stop moving.
01:19:51I'm taking responsibility
01:19:54for my actions, Dad.
01:19:56It's something you've never done.
01:20:00Good work.
01:20:02I'll talk later.
01:20:04Good talk, bad talk.
01:20:05I'm grateful.
01:20:07Relieved.
01:20:08And mad.
01:20:10You figure it out.
01:20:13Thought you weren't
01:20:15going to call my brother.
01:20:16Technically,
01:20:17I didn't call him.
01:20:18I texted him on the way
01:20:19and I only dialed him
01:20:20so that he could hear
01:20:21Danny's confession.
01:20:22Always good to have
01:20:23a backup plan.
01:20:24Better to tell your partner
01:20:26about the plan.
01:20:26Partner?
01:20:27In crime prevention.
01:20:30Okay.
01:20:31Can I get everyone's
01:20:32attention, please?
01:20:33I just wanted to thank y'all
01:20:37for believing in me
01:20:38and for saving me.
01:20:40We're so grateful.
01:20:42I can't imagine
01:20:43having better friends.
01:20:44What are y'all
01:20:45going to do about the oil?
01:20:49We are very curious.
01:20:52We don't know
01:20:54how or when
01:20:55we're going to put a well in,
01:20:57but we have decided
01:20:58that if and when we do,
01:21:00we will be donating
01:21:01some of the profits
01:21:02to the National Police Foundation.
01:21:04I like that.
01:21:06That's amazing.
01:21:07That's amazing.
01:21:09That's very nice, y'all.
01:21:11It's the least we could do.
01:21:12If I may,
01:21:13I'd like to ask
01:21:13that the donation be made
01:21:15in honor of my sister,
01:21:17who will be officially
01:21:18collaborating with
01:21:19the Sheriff's Department
01:21:20moving forward.
01:21:21And a special thanks
01:21:22to the Sweet River

01:21:28now that we're doing
01:21:29more investigating
01:21:30than reading.
01:21:31Well, should we open
01:21:35the doors
01:21:36and let the customers in?
