Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te delivered a shocking New Year’s address amid escalating Chinese military drills, vowing to defend the island’s sovereignty at all costs. Beijing recently fired missiles, deployed fighter jets, naval vessels, and coastguard ships, actions Taipei called “provocative”.
In his fiery address, President Lai emphasized strengthening national defense, societal resilience, and democratic deterrence, while warning that internal political infighting could weaken Taiwan’s security. The drills come after US arms sales to Taiwan and warnings from Japan’s Prime Minister about responding to any attacks on the island.
