00:00Marches on we are for it
00:03Oh my gosh, I love it so much stunning look at this rough
00:11Taking on extraordinary bills look at it's over the house
00:16Hello for even more extraordinary people here. We go. I
00:22Didn't think I'd ever get upstairs again
00:25Send all the builders down along with our secret weapon. It's like an army. It's a lot of people. No, there's no common
00:33The great British public. I'm excited. I didn't know I had this many friends
00:40Are we up for it
00:44This time I don't want it swinging into the steel work
00:49We're taking on one of our most challenging community builds
00:53Why would you do that? I got emotionally involved if I'm truly honest the job is so huge
01:00Even the gladiators are pitching you. I'm just glad I could put the muscles to use
01:05Where's the sewer gone? That's what we're trying to plan. We shouldn't be doing this today
01:10It looks like a war zone a moment now. What point do you say? I'm sorry?
01:13I failed work. We just can't deliver what I said we could because it was just too much in the end
01:23I'm off to beat the team at cherry tree community center in East riding in Yorkshire during COVID they needed to change their youth club
01:36Into a food pantry and since then they haven't been able to change it back
01:41It means they have nowhere for their young people to go anymore. So they've asked us to come up have a look see if we can help out
01:47We're down to one camping chair
02:00We are helping and supporting their children and young people from the age of nine never mind you can soon get back in
02:07It's always so so busy here and fun and never ever dull
02:12We have a range of activities that we can put on for them rounders dodgeball good one this team football
02:27Yeah, good kids and they just need a place to come and we've got four against these two. All right. I like that
02:35At the moment our sessions they're not structured
02:38You can't really be structured when you don't have a place to be
02:49We don't know a youth club in the park currently
02:53We have our work is a burr we set that up in the winter. It's quite dreadful to be honest raining snowing
03:02Hi, do you want some pizza go see Josh there then
03:08This area is in the bottom 15% a deprivation in the country
03:18Everybody's struggling when you do fall into poverty children do suffer we speak to many kids who have not eaten anything for days
03:28We know the need is there we know they don't all have hot food to eat that night
03:33There are young people who don't have trusted adults to go to
03:42I run the sessions now, but I was one of the young people myself
03:45I used to be a young carer at home
03:48It was quite difficult carrying the sort of responsibilities of the family
03:53So coming to cherry tree sort of gave me an escape from that. I've been where they are
04:04For the past five years Joe and Fiona have been doing all they can to find a new base for the youth club
04:10I'm begging for places. I'm just asking for one room for these kids, but nobody listen
04:24If we can't find somewhere for the youth club to have a home I
04:29Do dread where the young people will turn to because there is nowhere else for them
04:35I'm heading to meet Joe who manages all the charity services a
04:44Little food shop. Hello. Hello. Hi, Nick in the building where the youth club used to be
04:50So it's a food pantry a food pantry. Yes, but we thought the pantry would only be here for six months in lockdown
04:58But we are feeding
05:001548 members
05:02Wow, you can't just close that down. No, there must be somewhere else that you could have the youth club
05:07We're homeless. We're on on the park. It's been really difficult in the winter months. I've gone through six gazebos
05:13I've got that many gazebo in the winter. Yeah, it's awful. It's awful. Have you got anything at all?
05:18Yes, so we've got these shipping containers
05:20We've had donated to us and we've had planning permission so we can put our containers on the park
05:25So they're gonna allow you to build something you've just got to get some there's something built. Yes
05:30I think I better have a look at them
05:33So it's this big one here. Well these ones here. Yeah, they look like they've been around forever. Look at them
05:42Doors battered I
05:45Mean they look reasonably watertight, but I don't know how much life they've got left in them
05:49All the way along the seams. They're all heavily eaten with rust
05:56I don't think they're worth the time the money to repair
06:01And I wouldn't be able to guarantee that they'd last any length of time if we did they're just not good enough. I'm afraid
06:10These are all I've got. This is the only hope I've had. I suppose it's just home truth today, isn't it?
06:16I
06:18Can I still come along and meet the kids? Yeah
06:24The charity have planning permission to build a club in this park
06:28Hello, hi nice nice to meet you
06:31But they don't have the funds to achieve their dream
06:34Listen I'd get into it if I was you because these chips are gonna be freezing in no time at all
06:38Hello, can I ask you a question? Is that all right? So why do you come along and join in?
06:43It's fun. And what are the people like that run it?
06:46They're always there if you need them. I'm like they're always there to help you and stuff
06:50What sort of things can you talk to them about?
06:52Anything like literally anything. Why do you come and join in?
06:54Because it's fun. I'm over here
06:57And what do you think about the idea of building a permanent structure it'd be good because then we won't be as cold
07:06It'll get us off the streets too many people on the streets. What's the best thing the games the beats of the friends?
07:11What's the best thing? I like pizzas
07:14Yeah, I like pieces too to be honest
07:16But are there lots of things around here for you to go and do and join in with I'm not so much
07:20All right, so this is quite important is it? Yeah, it's very important
07:29How many kids do you get along to this up to 150 so what are they coming here for they're coming to play football
07:35They're coming for a slice of pizza a little bit of everything some of it's a check-in
07:39I need to catch up with you different dilemmas. We're here for all of that the the need is huge and endless and
07:47Going forward sitting in a gazebo is not the right place. No, it's freezing here. My feet are frozen
07:53Yeah, well, it's hard work. Actually. It's hard work being out here when you're cold and you need the toilet
08:00To have a place would be incredible
08:05Never fails to amaze me how many people you meet as you go around the country all
08:09Voluntarily doing amazing things in communities like this very often without the support they need
08:13There's no buildings. There's no sewerage. There's no electric. There's no water
08:19There's nothing at all literally nothing, but it's needed mental health
08:24Support and one of the worries about school kids that haven't eaten
08:31Shouldn't have to be in a gazebo should it
08:33Okay, so um the reason I came here was to find out what you had and it turned out you've got anything at all and the piece of land here is
08:49It is going to be really difficult to work with but
08:52It is very clear that there is an absolute need here
08:55So under those circumstances and because I've been watching the kids playing football and joining in and watching them shiver under a gazebo
09:03The only decision we can make is that we will come and do it
09:06I
09:08Don't know how we're gonna do it
09:22I don't know what to say. I haven't done anything yet
09:29I think it's amazing. All right. Well, I've made a promise now, so I'll see you in a few weeks time
09:36It's amazing. Thank you so much. Thank you
09:41Wow
09:42It's like just grabbed me by the heart and it took me straight back to my youth and thinking how important it would have been
09:48For me to have had that opportunity to have a youth club and what it would have done for the kids on my estate
09:52I'm just gonna break it to the team now that I've said yes, but we're gonna do this one
09:59Really I should have said no, but how do you how do you how do you say no?
10:09There is quite a big hole so shall we get some hammer fencing up. Yeah, let's put some up
10:15Three months of planning and preparation have passed since I was last in East riding. Yeah, go here. Yeah on the angle
10:22We've also used the time to lay concrete foundations
10:28Morning
10:29So Chloe how you doing? Hello so excited ready to meet the people that are gonna do this. Yeah. Yes
10:36Building an entire youth center from scratch in eight days will take a monumental effort
10:46But local tradespeople and volunteers have arrived ready to help
10:52So many people
10:55It's amazing you can't believe it
11:03I can't believe how many people are giving up their time
11:06I've been running this youth group out of my car for years for me
11:11It's a game-changer a youth center can make such a difference. So thank you so much
11:18so I used to come to the youth club when I was younger and
11:22now I work for the youth club and I
11:27Don't know where I'd be if I didn't ever come to the youth club
11:32It opened up so many more opportunities for me and I just want to be able to do that for all the other young people
11:38and
11:40And this is one of many which you can make that difference too. So thank you all so much
11:45Thank you
11:53I grew up in a place like this the kind of places that people say oh don't bother building anything nice there
11:58It will just get destroyed
12:00You have to build stuff in tough places. You have to make a difference. You have to change
12:04You have to change
12:17I didn't expect it could get me
12:21You will make this happen you will change the futures of young people around here with what we're about to do
12:27Are we up for it?
12:30Yeah!
12:31Let's get outside!
12:37We need to get that crane as soon as possible
12:39We do
12:45So we've got the crane here to lift the steel in
12:47It's fast isn't it?
12:51This is what I love. There's a lot of beeping
12:54So we have a steel frame right?
12:56Yeah, so the steel frame goes in
12:58Yeah
12:59Then we've got block work
13:00Yeah
13:01Then we can drop a timber roof on top of that
13:03My concern is if we don't reach that point today
13:06Yeah
13:07Even on day one we could be in trouble
13:17So basically I have volunteered us to do a complete ground up in a field
13:23Brand new build
13:24On a site that's got no services at all
13:26Oh here we go
13:27We haven't got any electric, haven't got any water
13:29And we haven't got any like anywhere for the sewage to go
13:33Why? Why would you do that?
13:35I got emotionally involved if I'm truly honest
13:37And felt we couldn't walk away from it
13:39So it starts with two sea containers
13:42And they will sit either end of a steel frame
13:45And then timber frame infill
13:47And then we're going to put basically a glazed section in between
13:50The charity's shipping containers weren't fit for purpose
13:53But they were part of the planning permission
13:56So we've had to get two new ones that will form the ends of a steel frame building
14:01With floor to ceiling glass windows
14:03We're filling this with lovely fun things like stages
14:06Yeah, we really want to give them a space where they can dream
14:10Where they can have fun
14:11We've got a cinema screen
14:12But food poverty is a massive problem in this neighbourhood
14:16And that's one of the main things that this charity deals with
14:19They don't want any child to leave this place hungry
14:22With that in mind, one of the containers will house a kitchen
14:26To help feed any children who've been missing meals
14:29There will also be a breakout room ideal for private conversations
14:33The main hub will be an open-plan multi-purpose space with a central stage
14:40While the second container will have a storeroom and toilets
14:45Everything in this building needs to have a double function
14:48This stage you can fold it up
14:49Because they need to do sports in there and crafts
14:51You know, this needs to work for everything
14:53Cupboards that are sort of make-up stations
14:55It sounds like that requires quite a bit of bespoke joinery
14:58To make sure that then everything is set out exactly as they need
15:01But also what I really like is an amazing outdoor kitchen
15:04Yes
15:05Also an outdoor gym
15:06Yeah, anything that gets kids outside and being active has got to be a good thing, right?
15:10Exercising in the fresh air, can't get better than that
15:12And then the rest of the space we need to do something really fabulous with
15:15What I'm thinking is edible plants
15:18Food growing is so important for kids, education
15:20And we're then able to feed them from the garden
15:23Yeah, absolutely
15:24I think it'd be brilliant
15:26So let's concentrate on the young people
15:28Go on
15:29Let's go for this
15:30Yes
15:31That was so good
15:32Off you go then, son
15:34Now I'm on holiday
15:36Come on
15:37Let's go
15:41Until this is art
15:42I feel like a sort of expectant father pacing around the waiting room
15:51All of a sudden somebody's ordered a wheelbarrow army
15:53Actually the front of the wheelbarrow army
15:54There's some people I wanted to say hello to
15:57Bolstering our ranks are three gladiators
15:59Tom and Listers, AKA Hammer and Cyclone
16:03Nice to see we got you to work straight away
16:05Good of you to come along
16:06And Fury, real name Jodie, who's leading the charge
16:10I'm from up and off
16:11I'm from Dewsbury
16:12Right
16:13So it feels very familiar
16:15Like when I was growing up
16:16I sort of came to a park like this
16:18I think young kids need that
16:19And it's made a big impact on my life
16:21So I just think that's really cool that we've been able to do something like that
16:25It's just nice to help
16:26Also Tom is your gladiator name is Hammer
16:29It seems appropriate
16:30Yeah
16:31Hammering nails in
16:32Any walls that need knocking down
16:33Well I tell you what
16:34I am also going to lean on your fame a little bit
16:36Because we've been trying to get hold of some more fitness equipment
16:38Could we use you guys to maybe put some shout outs on social media and things
16:42To see if we can get people to go
16:43Yeah we'll come forward and we'll donate some stuff
16:45And we'll use you that way as well
16:46Is that alright?
16:47Yeah absolutely
16:48Thank you
16:49Thank you very much
16:50Nice to see you
16:51Doing all this for the youth club is incredible
16:54This is the centre of this community
16:56I can see how something like this would have a huge impact
17:00I think for kids to have that opportunity and just bring them together
17:03Get out of the house, meet new people, in the gym
17:06It's just going to be unreal for them
17:08We are here with DIY SOS
17:10Helping them build the most amazing youth club
17:13The only thing is that we don't have the gym equipment
17:16We need your help
17:17Support, connections you have
17:19We need you
17:20Back to work you pair
17:21Come on
17:22Our steel frame is on track to be up by day's end
17:27We're going to have to just conveyor belt through a whole bunch of walls
17:31But the timber structure we need to fit inside it tomorrow
17:34Squeeze in there a little bit
17:36Has hit a snag
17:37So when's the timber frame arriving?
17:39Well that's the issue
17:40Is that while we thought that a company was going to be able to be prefabbing
17:44All the timber framing we need for this build
17:46Instead we weren't able to find that
17:48And we have to build a factory on site
17:50And the issue is that all that has to get done in about a day and a half
17:54Don't go that way, do go that way
17:56Rader and his carpentry team need to build 18 timber frames on site
18:01You want ten and a longer length?
18:02We have to do short ones
18:03Okay
18:04Perfect
18:05A job that would take much longer in a factory
18:08There's a lot going on
18:10There's no way you should be able to do this in that time
18:12But we've got so we've got a lot of people here
18:15But everything needs to fall into place otherwise it will fail
18:17Starting with no building brings a whole load of issues
18:24Even the most basic utilities have to be installed
18:29This was a field, a play park
18:31Where's the electric? Where's the water? How's it getting here?
18:35So we've got power guys sorting that
18:37And the water is behind you in a duct
18:39Wait what about sewage though?
18:41You see that house there?
18:42And we're putting the sewage into their garden
18:44That's where the nearest sewer pipe is to tap into
18:46Yeah, so we've basically got
18:48We've run that past the homeowner
18:50You're going to have to probably just go over and just a little tap on the door
18:53Okay, we haven't run it past it yet
18:55Can you just pop over and say hello?
18:57What if she says no?
18:58I don't know to be honest with you
18:59But that's the only place we can tap into
19:01All right, I'll go and have a word
19:03All right, cheers Nick
19:05I think I've just been done
19:09Well I guess this is the one
19:14Hello
19:19Hello
19:20Hello
19:21Hello
19:22I'm Nick
19:23Hello, I'm Angie
19:24Hello Angie, how are you?
19:25I'm fine, thank you
19:26Erm, I've got a bit of a request
19:28With the thing that we're building
19:29You know what we're building over there
19:30The trouble is the only place we can tap into the sewage works
19:33Is in your back garden
19:34Okay
19:35Can I have a look and I can show you
19:36Yeah, of course you can
19:37You don't have to say yes or no straight away
19:39So we'd have to take up some of your pathway
19:42Which means we'd have to move your shed
19:45And then take a bit of the fence out
19:47I promise you that we will make it good
19:50We'll make the grass good
19:51We'll make the pathway good
19:53Are you sure on this?
19:55This is the only way we can do it
20:00Okay
20:01Yeah
20:02I'll go with it because it's something for the kids
20:04And that is what the kids need something to do
20:06So I'll out with you
20:07Really?
20:08I will, yes
20:09Yes, I will
20:10Really?
20:11Yes, yes I will
20:12Oh, can I have a hug?
20:13Yes
20:14Oh, that's amazing
20:15Do you know what?
20:16The fact that she said
20:17The youngsters need somewhere around here
20:20Just gives you an idea
20:21Of how people understand what's going on
20:23So, massive result
20:25While our excavation team search for a sewage pint
20:28See if we're any joy here then
20:31A giant donation has arrived
20:33I've been told that the sea containers
20:36Yes
20:37Are nearby
20:44Look at that, look at the size of those things
20:45Only just baited it under the telephone wires
20:50What we need is we need that shipping container
20:53Tight up against those stills
20:55The main building framework is up
20:57Now we need to crane our two shipping containers into place at either end
21:07The key point is the wind that we don't get a sudden gust
21:10We've got to make sure we're very, very gentle
21:12And we don't knock any of the block work off
21:14Any of the stills or anything
21:15Anything really
21:16That's it
21:17Right
21:18Let's go and have a look at it
21:19Each container weighs 2.7 tonnes
21:21Have your wits about you everyone
21:23Any collision could cause permanent damage to the container wall
21:26Or make the steel frame structurally unsound
21:29Oh crap, Barrett
21:30This is, this is why I hate men
21:31It's just that there's no margin for error
21:33And it just makes me so stressed
21:35I can't even watch it
21:36The wind's getting up
21:41You can see it with the trees moving
21:43I've got to be very, very careful here
21:48Oh, watch the bang
21:52Oh, Jesus Christ
21:57I can't bear it
22:00Whoa, whoa, whoa, a nittle
22:02Tell him to come down, down
22:04Yeah, but hang on
22:05I don't want it swinging into the steel work
22:07Whoa, argh
22:09Down
22:13Right, put you down so we can get her arms on it
22:15Just get, get your edge on it
22:16Right, we got it
22:17Stop it there, stop it there
22:18Steady, steady, nice and steady now
22:19Just have everyone got control of it
22:20Stop the train
22:21Right, just have everyone watch the block work and everything else
22:26Oh, down here
22:27It's water and steel
22:28Yep
22:29Is it stuck on?
22:30No, he's got it down
22:31He's clear now
22:32He's clear now
22:33He's clear, you're good
22:34That was hairy
22:36Yeah, I told you
22:38To me, to me
22:39Whoa, whoa, whoa
22:40You've gone the other way
22:41Back to me, to me
22:42Back to me
22:43There
22:44There, there
22:45There, there, there
22:46Drop it down
22:47Drop it down
22:48Let's back on
22:49Good, good, good, good
22:50That's one in
22:51Now we've got to do it all over again on the second one
22:56And it's half past eight
22:58I mean everyone's been putting such a shift today
23:01I can't tell you what a joy it is to work with these people
23:04Like the enthusiasm and the dedication is incredible
23:07I love it
23:08I love, love, love it
23:09It doesn't matter how long the day is, I love it
23:11Alright
23:1210,000
23:13To the millimetre
23:14What it goes
23:15Can I have a poached egg on toast, please, my darling?
23:31What?
23:32What? One poached egg?
23:34Yeah, just like breakfast.
23:36I'll have eight eggs in an omelette, please.
23:40Not twelve?
23:42Ten. It's compromised in the middle. Ten eggs for me.
23:49With the main building, steel structure finished,
23:51the concrete and breeze-blocked floor can start going in.
23:55All blocks!
23:57What I like about this system is once you've got everything set up,
24:04it flies in, doesn't it?
24:06I mean, we'll literally be walking across this
24:08and be finished in half an hour.
24:14That'll go down.
24:16Perfect.
24:17You walk round that side.
24:18Watch your fingers!
24:20After a Herculean effort hand crafting all the wooden frames
24:23for the interior walls, Radha's team are nearly there.
24:26How many have we done?
24:28This is number 17, so we've got one last one to do.
24:32And these guys are working like a machine.
24:36Oh!
24:37All right, let him be pencil.
24:38No, let him be pencil.
24:43It's amazing that we're already at this place.
24:46It's pretty mad.
24:47The timing is so, so, so tight.
24:50So today we're up for it.
24:52Keep bringing the beams!
24:54Keep bringing the beams!
24:55Keep bringing the beams!
25:00I've taken five minutes out from the build to go and have a chat with Chloe.
25:03She went to the youth club as a child and now is a youth club worker.
25:06So I'm not sure there's anyone better to tell us how important it is.
25:10Hello, you.
25:11Hello.
25:12Can I come and have a chat?
25:13Yeah.
25:14Is that right?
25:15Yeah.
25:16I'll squidge around here and...
25:19There we go.
25:20So do you think if you actually had a building that you could make a big difference?
25:24I feel like it's really important to give them a safe space.
25:27If they want to just be a child at the youth club, they can do that.
25:31I'm trying to get to a point where they can confide in you.
25:34If they have no one else to confide in, who do they go to?
25:37So tell me about you when you came to the youth club.
25:41I had quite a tough childhood.
25:43It was always tiptoe around the house, don't speak, stay out the way.
25:48It was sort of like a...
25:50Take your time, I'm sorry.
26:01In stepping into the youth club world, there was somebody who could look after me.
26:07Is that the motivation, you don't want anyone to feel like you did?
26:11Yeah.
26:12Here you are, you've got a job, you're going to college, you're doing really well.
26:17Will your 12, 13-year-old self recognise you now?
26:20No.
26:21I feel like I'm...
26:23Who I am now is the big sister I always wanted when I was little.
26:26You should be very proud of that.
26:28Yeah.
26:29And what we're going to do is give you an environment in which you can carry on doing that amazing work
26:32and be a big sister of a lot of other people too.
26:36Yeah, hopefully.
26:41Now the floor's down and perfectly level.
26:44Welcome to Cherry Tree Youth Club.
26:48It looks amazing.
26:50Gabby can outline her grand plans.
26:53So, we've got two openings over here.
26:55So we've got an accessible loo and then we've got in there, we've got a store.
26:59We've got a beautiful open plan kitchen here and we've got a little breakout space.
27:03Okay.
27:04It's going to be great.
27:05So, let's have a look at the building here.
27:07So we've got a new shaped kitchen, we've got a lovely ovens and stuff tucked away here.
27:12Why don't you overfly the worktop so we can have like a tucking breakfast bar on?
27:16I'm doing that already.
27:19Oh yeah?
27:20It's not my first rodeo, sweetheart.
27:22So that still leaves us with a massive space out here.
27:25This is where we've got the big glass, so it's a lovely view of the park.
27:28I think of this room as like the Swiss Army knife design.
27:31I want everything to do two things.
27:33So they can play sports in here, they can do crafts.
27:36This is going to be the hub of everything.
27:38So they can have a party in here by clearing away all the tables and chairs?
27:41We've got a disco board going up, we've got an amazing lighting system.
27:44Oh, oh, and I forgot, we've got a cinema screen.
27:46This is going to blow them away when it's done, isn't it?
27:48Yeah.
27:49All we're going to do is get it done.
27:54That's right.
27:55With a prefab roof in place.
27:57That bag on my life!
27:58Billionaire Sparkies can crack on with putting in 1,000 metres of cabling.
28:03We've actually wired the two containers.
28:05The containers are near enough done now, yeah.
28:07So we've just got this main area and then everything else is up in the ceiling.
28:11There's a lot to do though, isn't there?
28:13There's a lot to do.
28:14All our builds are hard, but this is especially hard because
28:18it's brand new, it's from the ground up.
28:21This, for us, is a big challenge.
28:26We're trying to connect the youth club toilets to the nearest main sewer.
28:30Here we go, that's nice. Dig a hole through there, lovely.
28:33We've dug up a neighbour's garden.
28:35Oh, that doesn't look good.
28:37Where we were expecting to find a sewer pipe.
28:44That manhole's not where it should be.
28:49It's not there.
28:50Where's the pipe? Where's the sewer gone?
28:52Where's the sewer gone?
28:53That's what we're trying to find at the minute.
28:55Where's all the sewage going from the house here if there's not a pipe out the back?
29:00It's running right along the house and then into that sewer.
29:03And dipping in next door.
29:04Two houses are going into one.
29:06So if we want to do this, we dig a bit of gold in their garden so that we can change their drain.
29:11So it all connects up?
29:13Well, that, I didn't see that coming.
29:16That's made that a lot more interesting all of a sudden, hasn't it?
29:18We can't hand over a youth club with no working toilets.
29:22On a scale of one to ten of not good for the job, that's about nine and a half.
29:27But we're now going to need a digger and about eight men on that.
29:32It's a massive, massive issue.
29:41One more.
29:44Pass me a spade.
29:46Do something different.
29:50All good?
29:51Yeah.
29:53Slowly, the building is beginning to emerge.
29:59Eighteen timber wall frames built by Radha's team are being fitted.
30:07Ready for Chris and his team to get plastering.
30:09It's all going to be boarded and skinned.
30:12That's where my mind's going now.
30:13Yeah.
30:14So we've got quite a challenge in that.
30:15It's like every time you get over one challenge in this, you think,
30:18great, we're like, and then here comes the next challenge,
30:20like riding up to slap you in the face like a wet fish.
30:23Keep going. Keep going.
30:25Keep going.
30:27It's like wrestling a snake.
30:29It's the moment of truth for our youth club toilets.
30:32We found the main sewer by digging up another kind neighbour's garden.
30:36But the club is 80 metres away.
30:37Pull a bit more through and then pull it back up.
30:42If we can't lay in this huge stretch of pipe to connect them up,
30:46it's back to the drawing board.
30:48All hands on deck.
30:50Yeah.
30:51Come on.
30:52Thankfully, Jamie, a.k.a. Giant from the Gladiators, has also come to help.
30:57Push it. Keep pushing.
31:03Push.
31:04All right, further back on the pull back.
31:08Three, two, one, back.
31:10One big push.
31:12All at the same time.
31:14Two.
31:16That's right, that's fine, that's fine.
31:17Yay!
31:19We're done.
31:20All right, well done, everyone.
31:22Very good, very good, very good.
31:23Well done.
31:24This putting the sewage connection has been probably the most troublesome thing on the whole build.
31:29So actually to have it connected up now, it's a bit of a godsend, really.
31:32Yeah.
31:33It's funny how you do all the engineering you like, in the end it comes down to brute force sometimes.
31:36Yeah.
31:37Well, I'm just glad I could put the muscles to use.
31:39Yeah.
31:40I'm going to come over this mountain of rubble.
31:43We've mapped out this flower border.
31:44Now we need to see where the kitchen is.
31:46I know this seems absolutely mad, but I just need to be able to see this,
31:50because at the moment it's just looking like an absolute building site.
31:54With the sewage setbacks calling in so many resources,
31:57Ash hasn't been able to start planting or setting up the outdoor kitchen and edible garden.
32:03We are way behind already.
32:05On a normal domestic build, I would have a footprint of a garden already there.
32:08It looks like a wall zone, right?
32:17If you've got plastered, we need to ask you to leave.
32:19We've got to start plastering in the next ten minutes.
32:23We're almost halfway through the schedule and the scale of the job is still overwhelming.
32:29The trouble is if you look at any one area in this build, it will worry you.
32:33Are there enough plasterers to do the plastering so that the kitchen can go in?
32:39Will the kitchen go in fast enough that the second fix can go in?
32:44Will the sewerage work? Will the electric work?
32:47Will the electric work? If you think about it all, it will just drive you mad.
32:50Will the electric work? If you think about it all, it will just drive you mad.
32:51All right?
32:52Good.
32:53All right.
33:08After pulling the late one, the first stage of the electrics and plastering has been completed.
33:12has been completed.
33:15Woo-hoo! Kitchen day.
33:17Gabby can finally set about working on the inside of the club.
33:21Oh, now we can get cracking.
33:23Right, the kitchen's at this end.
33:25Ah! So excited, thank you.
33:30OK, so enormous oven, lovely sink there,
33:33and an absolutely huge, humongous fridge.
33:36This space is almost the most important space in this building,
33:41and what we want is no kid to leave here hungry.
33:53We've got the gym kit! Come on!
33:55The gladiators' call-out for our garden activity area
33:58has come up trumps.
34:01So we've got a variety of stuff, we've got pedal bars.
34:03On bicycle. I mean, that's fabulous, isn't it?
34:05Yep, absolutely. Anything that gets the kids moving and...
34:08And it's like a way for them to decompress,
34:10distract themselves from things that might be going in their lives.
34:12OK, well, we're not going to be putting them in for a while.
34:14But in the meantime...
34:15Yes!
34:16Well done!
34:17To make sure the centre is the best it can be for the community,
34:29Gabby wants to learn more about the local kids.
34:32So how many of your mates would you be bringing with you to Cherry Tree?
34:36Oh, it was...
34:37She's gone to meet 14-year-old Billy, who lives on a nearby estate.
34:41So what's it like living round here?
34:43It's a very little town.
34:45And everyone kind of knows everything, everyone knows everyone.
34:48And how's it been for you guys?
34:49Because I know your age group
34:51have been through some really tough times recently, haven't you?
34:53Yeah, like, it's been...
34:55I think in the past five years we've lost three of our friends.
34:58And when you get them phone calls,
35:00finding out that people you know have died, like, so quickly,
35:04it is...it's awful.
35:06Then the Cherry Tree Community Centre have really, you know,
35:10helped us with that.
35:11They got the organised counsellors and things like that
35:13just so we could speak to people, because...
35:16Jonny, I'm so sorry.
35:18That's...that's massive to cope with that.
35:21And do you feel...
35:22So when all this was going on, you guys had lost your youth centre,
35:26you know, there's nowhere for your age group
35:28to actually be together, is there?
35:30No, the one...there's not anywhere now.
35:32And tell me about what a safe space would feel like for you
35:35and your friends.
35:36You know, just some way you can go where, you know,
35:37you're not going to get...be getting into trouble
35:39and some way you can go, you know, when you need something
35:41and there's people there you can speak to.
35:43Because, you know, it'd get us off the street.
35:44Things like that.
35:45It's just trying to keep everyone out of trouble
35:47as much as you can.
35:49Speaking to Billy really brought it home to me.
35:52This centre's got to provide a safe space
35:54for people who don't feel they have one.
35:56But I also want them to just feel full of fun, adventure,
36:01you know, new dreams, new horizons.
36:03I want it to be really special for them.
36:09Fitting everything the kids need into this space needs careful thinking.
36:13Rada, my love.
36:14And another mission for our wood wizard.
36:17Can I just hit you with my list of things?
36:19Yeah, yeah, yeah. Just, like, back-to-back it for me.
36:22Right, so I want a backdrop to the stage.
36:24I want an arch.
36:25But I want, kind of, a couple of layers.
36:27So I've just done a sketch here.
36:28We've also got storage for loads of, kind of, beauty, make-up.
36:32OK, so, like, a vanity unit kind of style.
36:35And also, in the two loos, I'd love you to make some shelving for the walls
36:41that we're going to fill with all the toiletries they might need.
36:44It's that principle of nobody needs to be embarrassed by asking for stuff.
36:47You just go in there and there's everything you need.
36:49It's making me feel a bit sick to even actually verbalise this list.
36:52It's definitely a little scary, but the joinery team is fantastic.
36:56So we've marked out the corner of the gym area.
37:06We've got the pizza oven to go here.
37:08Ash still has to wait before he can landscape and plant,
37:11but he can make a start on the outdoor kitchen.
37:14We can get this done.
37:16This is going to add so much benefit to the local community.
37:19The kids are going to love this area.
37:26We're two-thirds of the way through our build schedule.
37:41Right, my loves, let's get this sorted.
37:44And Gabby has to press on with painting.
37:47Whoa!
37:48Are you sure about this one, Gabby?
37:50It is quite leery in a good way.
37:53So this is our main colour.
37:55So the whole feel will be really like pops of interest.
37:58I want them to come in here and think,
38:00you know, there's that and there's this.
38:02But it's not...
38:03Not in your face.
38:04Thanks, John.
38:06The next couple of days we'll see if we've got it right with the paints.
38:10But it's always nerve-wracking.
38:15Mind your back.
38:16Oh, sorry, darling.
38:17Sorry.
38:18Whoop, whoop, whoop!
38:19So we've managed to find a beautiful, collapsible stage.
38:24Which way does it collapse?
38:26Down.
38:27So in and out.
38:29This is going to be the real focus of this whole room.
38:32Where they can expand their horizons a bit.
38:34And when they walk in, I want to just be like, ka-pa!
38:36We've got karaoke here.
38:38What's your go-to karaoke, Bill?
38:40I'll call it the Gat song.
38:41I feel it in my fingers.
38:44I feel it in my toes.
38:47Cause love is all around us.
38:50And the feeling for us.
38:53Yes, that's what I like to eat.
39:06Let's go.
39:07Right, gang.
39:08We're going to load up these turfs here and get them down.
39:12We've got a lot to get in.
39:15A huge amount of turf.
39:18Yes.
39:19950 square metres of turf.
39:21It's going to be tight.
39:23This turf is going to take a few hours, definitely, to get that down.
39:30Right, first piece of turf.
39:32Going down.
39:34With an area almost the size of five tennis courts to cover, Ash calls in the cavalry.
39:39Hello.
39:40Hello.
39:41Have you laid turf before?
39:42That's it, huh?
39:43Is it something you've done?
39:44I'm so glad you're here.
39:46This is good.
39:47This is good.
39:48This is what we need.
39:49We need all hands on deck because I'm actually pretty nervous that we're not going to finish
39:52this in time.
39:53The toughest thing for Ash, it hasn't been able to get at what for any other landscaper
39:57would be three months of work and we get in two days.
40:00I'm not altogether sure that's possible.
40:02What?
40:03I can't see where I'm going.
40:09Looks good, doesn't it?
40:12I like it there.
40:13C-T-Y-H, Cherry Tree Youth Hub.
40:19What?
40:20Well, I'm just a bit tense that this is on the back of the building, not the front.
40:26Well, this is the side.
40:28It's on the plans.
40:29This is the side.
40:30But...
40:31Give me the plans.
40:34Don't get shouty.
40:35It's just possible that I made a mistake.
40:38We need it.
40:39We need it where it's the entrance and this isn't the entrance.
40:41This is the emergency exit.
40:42We can put it over there.
40:43Have you got enough letters to do it twice?
40:45Have we got enough letters to do it twice?
40:47Not here or made yet.
40:48How long would it take to make them?
40:51What time can I start in the morning?
40:53Seven o'clock, okay?
40:54Seven o'clock's perfect.
40:55Yeah.
40:56If you can get four letters and we can put them on the front tomorrow morning, we'll go over there.
40:59That would be amazing.
41:00Deal.
41:01And we'll keep that.
41:02Love it.
41:03Okay.
41:04Lovely lettering, by the way.
41:05Good.
41:06A whole day later than planned, flooring is going down inside.
41:17And is this totally bomb-proof?
41:19Bullet-proof.
41:20Bullet-proof.
41:21Kid-proof.
41:22But nothing else can be worked on until that's finished.
41:25Right, come on then.
41:26Let's get on.
41:27Come on then.
41:28Putting huge pressure on the final day of the build.
41:31I might buy a lottery ticket because the chances of it happening are about the same.
41:36So, if my luck's in, my luck's in.
41:50So much fencing to do.
41:52We've got 70 metres of this to put in.
41:54With just 24 hours to hand over, we're still miles off.
41:59My mind is, like, absolutely fried right now.
42:03I mean, I'm feeling quite unhinged.
42:05A lot of stuff to do.
42:10We just seem to be going slow by our standards, going fast by any other build standards.
42:15I don't know how we're going to do this, but we have to.
42:17At what point do you say, I'm sorry I failed, we just can't deliver what I said we could,
42:21because it was just too much in the end.
42:23At least there's some good news.
42:27Letters for the front of the building have been delivered.
42:30It looks amazing.
42:31Thank you, darling.
42:32So these panes are pretty special though, aren't they?
42:37They're very heavy.
42:38Yeah.
42:39Yeah, about 160 kg each there.
42:41Are they?
42:42Yeah.
42:43Think this one's going to fit?
42:44If they don't fit, it's quite nerve-wracking.
42:46Er, like, go on.
42:47Should I go for it?
42:48Yeah, go on, lift it in, let's see.
42:49We don't have time to have another paint made.
42:52These are made to order, so if it doesn't fit, it doesn't fit.
42:54We good?
42:55Yeah.
42:56Yeah.
42:57Yeah.
42:58That's it, we're in.
42:59Isn't that beautiful?
43:00Excellent.
43:01You can see why when Gabby designed this, she wanted all the glass front on this side.
43:14They've got plants.
43:15Yay!
43:16So let's get these out.
43:17Ash's plants have arrived, but he and his local volunteers have just one day to create
43:30the entire garden.
43:31We'll work all the way up to here, all right?
43:32Sound good?
43:33I think it's the best way to do it, it's probably start at the back.
43:39Finally getting some plants in, which is great, and these are all edible plants.
43:45We've got fruit trees, fruit bushes.
43:47You can even put it on there.
43:50I'll grab it.
43:51I'm hoping for the rest of the community that they'll come and be able to enjoy this space.
43:56We love it, we know they'll love it.
43:57Yes.
43:58It's making me happy.
43:59Inside, some of the key elements are finally coming together.
44:04It's amazing, it's a beautiful kitchen.
44:06It looks nice, it looks soft.
44:08Breakout rooms looking very lovely in there.
44:10We're doing really well over here, colour is so important.
44:13We've got giant highlighter pens around all the things of interest.
44:17This is fun, this is exciting.
44:19This is your sort of setting day.
44:21We should just be polishing things.
44:23What's stressing us out here is we shouldn't be doing this today.
44:27We've got so much to do, we've got to be finished tonight.
44:30At the moment I just feel like crying and shouting at the same time because I know it's like...
44:34Is there anything I can do or make happen that will help things happen?
44:37Yeah, stop interviewing us and let us get on.
44:40Unbelievable.
44:46You pick it up, I'll make it down.
44:48Every part of the build needs one last big push.
44:51And we'll get one right in the end there.
44:54It should be the middle and something at the end.
45:00Ryder and his team are about to find out if the bespoke cabinets they've built for Gabby are the right fit.
45:06It's intimidating, I'm not going to lie.
45:09This is crucial for this space.
45:17It's always the finer details that really pull the build together.
45:20So this is hair and beauty mode.
45:23Yeah, in there, yeah.
45:25Ta-da!
45:26So it'll light up and we've got a great mirror here.
45:29Yeah.
45:30And then all our beauty products and skincare products here.
45:33They're going to love it.
45:34Kids should love it, yeah.
45:36The entire gym still needs to be set up and tested.
45:42Thinking spacing-wise, the bar's in that corner, would you say?
45:45You want to go here?
45:46Yeah.
45:47Yeah.
45:48We've got to get it done.
45:49It's just going to be a tight squeeze.
45:51It's a fun way to exercise and with your mates outside and anyone can use it.
45:55Maybe the arm and leg's in this corner because it's a smaller one.
46:01Love that.
46:02Yeah.
46:03And then last one.
46:04Last one.
46:05Yeah.
46:06Last piece.
46:08I'm thinking everyone needs to get involved and have a session on this.
46:11You ready to test them out?
46:15Billy is.
46:16Billy's the fittest out of all of us.
46:17So, I'm guessing...
46:20Oh, no, I don't know.
46:21Oh.
46:22Right, one foot on here.
46:23Oh, sorry.
46:27Oh, it keeps moving.
46:30Where am I going?
46:31Am I there yet?
46:32Children are going to love it, isn't they?
46:34Yeah, they are.
46:35All right?
46:36Yeah.
46:37Let me up to the top and see how it's fitting.
46:38So proud of everyone.
46:51This building has got such a personality now and I love that.
47:05Hello, lady.
47:06Hello.
47:07Hello.
47:08How are you doing?
47:09A mixture of excitement.
47:10Nervous.
47:11What could you have done in a week with no building?
47:14Right.
47:15You're going to see your new home.
47:16Ready?
47:17Okay.
47:18Let's go.
47:21When I first arrived in Beverley, there was nothing here.
47:25All the youth club had was a gazebo on a windswept field.
47:29The staff were doing all they could to provide support for kids in one of the poorest neighbourhoods in the country.
47:38But with no place to call home, they were on the verge of having to stop for good.
47:47But in just over a week, we've done the seemingly impossible and built a brand new youth centre from scratch.
47:54The main hub is a relaxing, warm and safe space and can be used for anything from arts and crafts to discos and parties.
48:03And a new state-of-the-art kitchen means the centre's no longer relying on takeaways.
48:09And healthy meals can be rustled up any time of day.
48:15The toilets are fully accessible and stocked with essentials.
48:19And there's a calming breakout room to help when children are at their lowest.
48:28Outside, we've created a kitchen garden complete with pizza oven so the kids can grow and cook their own food.
48:36And an outdoor gym to help them stay fit and well.
48:39Despite the countless challenges we've faced along the way, I hope we've created a space where local young people can flourish.
48:48And Joe, Fiona and Chloe can continue doing their amazing work into the future.
48:53Oh my God!
48:57I cannot believe it!
49:00They're just so big!
49:02This is what I always wanted.
49:05What were the newest ones?
49:08I know the kids have it!
49:12I know the kids have it!
49:19What's that?
49:21It's an outdoor gym.
49:23My God!
49:25Fruit and veg garden.
49:27Really?
49:28Blackcurrant's on the right.
49:29There's rhubarb, there's gooseberries.
49:30They're making crumbles, yeah.
49:32That's fantastic.
49:34Ready to see some more?
49:35Can you go?
49:37Oh my God!
49:41I just, I can't believe it!
49:45Oh my God!
49:47You all right, Fiona?
49:49The kid!
49:51Oh my God!
49:55You all right, Fiona?
49:57The kid!
49:58The kid!
50:00The kid!
50:04Oh my God!
50:09He's just amazing.
50:11You can fold the stage away and you have just a big open space.
50:15To be able to do dance classes, your yoga class, you don't have to have the stage out.
50:19And the colours are really calming.
50:22Gabby very much wanted to, after hearing so much about a safe space and about, like,
50:26sometimes the safe space isn't at home.
50:29Yeah.
50:30That this should feel also like a home.
50:31I can't breathe.
50:32I can't believe it.
50:33I can't.
50:35Oh my gosh.
50:37That is beautiful.
50:39Commercial quality oven, so that you could actually produce loads of food.
50:42Huge fridge.
50:44You could run a breakfast club here for the kids that aren't getting food before they go to school.
50:47Yeah.
50:48And it's school holidays, it's weekends, it's evenings.
50:51This is just going to be such a lifeline for them.
50:53How did this happen?
50:57Just can I have a minute?
51:00Sweetheart, of course you can have a minute.
51:02Absolutely you can have a minute.
51:03It's amazing.
51:06It's just beyond anything that we could have imagined.
51:10Whilst you've got an amazing area here to play in, I'm also aware about sometimes just being overwhelmed by everything
51:16and needing a space to go and be quiet or be separate.
51:19Yeah.
51:20So we created this breakout room.
51:23Oh!
51:25It's gorgeous.
51:27I think sometimes, you know, if someone comes and they're not having a good time, it'll be a good place to sit and have the conversations.
51:34Yeah.
51:38Ready?
51:40Out this way, please.
51:42The other big thing was the toilets.
51:45What?
51:47Wow!
51:49That is bloody beautiful, isn't it?
51:52The hygiene means such a lot.
51:54Some girls haven't been going to school.
51:56Because they can't afford...
51:57Yeah.
51:58The basics.
51:59Yeah.
52:00So...
52:04Did we miss anything?
52:06It's beyond, isn't it?
52:07Yeah.
52:08So much hope.
52:09It's unbelievable.
52:11You...
52:12listened.
52:13The first few years of my life were in an estate like this.
52:34Yeah.
52:35Yeah.
52:37And the trouble is, it's represented so badly, whenever it's featured, about what's bad about places like this.
52:45But we've just spent a week working with people to show what's good about places like this.
52:52Jeez.
52:53Pull yourself together.
52:54It's massive what you... what you do.
52:58So we had to give you the tools to do it.
53:00And more than that, we had to give you something beautiful.
53:02Yeah.
53:03So that when people walk in here, they know that people do care.
53:06It's like such an important message.
53:09Yeah.
53:11Right.
53:12We need to let the kids see it.
53:15Look at those little smiling faces.
53:17Wait till they see what's in there.
53:19Are you ready for this?
53:21It's...
53:22It's a push.
53:23Oh!
53:24Oh, no.
53:25Oh, my God!
53:27Oh, my God.
53:28This is my favourite area.
53:31Look at this.
53:32Oh!
53:37Moving!
53:38I'm going to move in!
53:39It is just amazing.
53:40We can do some make-up lessons.
53:42I have a good punch.
53:47No.
53:48It's even.
53:49I definitely should respect it.
53:50It's a mess.
53:51There's a full-out, like, print to them.
54:03What do you reckon?
54:04What do you think?
54:05I love it.
54:06Do you?
54:07Yeah.
54:08Box out of ten?
54:09Two billion.
54:10Billion.
54:11Billion.
54:12We'd like to go into the gym area.
54:13There's a gym?
54:14Oh, my God.
54:15I love it.
54:16I'm going straight to them.
54:17Using your muffles.
54:18What?
54:19Never been able to make pizza before.
54:20And now we can.
54:21Of course, none of this could have been achieved.
54:22Without our amazing team of trade suppliers and volunteers.
54:34And our gladiators.
54:35And our gladiators.
54:49Whoo!
54:50Whoo!
54:51Whoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!
54:52There you go, there.
54:53There you go, there.
54:54Stop clapping.
54:55We're clapping you.
54:56There they are.
54:57The people that actually took part in building this thing for you.
55:22You've built a future for us and a legacy.
55:26Yeah, you're going to change lives. This is unbelievable.
55:29Every child deserves a chance and I can just see that you're all here
55:33to try and make that difference. Thank you so much.
55:37I just want to say thank you on behalf of all the young people.
55:43This was all I ever wanted when I was younger.
55:47And now that we've got it for all the young people that we work with,
55:50now we can help them.
55:54From having probably the crappest youth club set up,
55:59we, I think, have got the best in the country.
56:03Bloody hell, you have knocked it out of the park.
56:06That is insane!
56:09Thank you so much.
56:11It's beautiful. Absolutely stunning.
56:14It's like spider woman over here.
56:24So this is good for your arms. You can get really strong.
56:27We both went to youth club, so how much it's impacted us,
56:31thinking of how much it's going to impact other people,
56:34so their situation is just insane.
56:36And it's so amazing to be a part of that.
56:40I sat there that night, watching the kids eating pizza and chips
56:43under a gazebo in the rain.
56:44I thought, this reminds me of where I grew up.
56:47Those places are often overlooked.
56:50People who live there think people don't care.
56:51So we had to build here.
56:54I couldn't walk away from it.
56:55It's too personal.
56:58There are kids here that could do amazing things
57:01if someone believes in them.
57:04So this lot came along and built a safe space.
57:06And that's the very least children should have, isn't it?
57:09Something to eat and a safe space to be.
