Millions of Australians will head to the beach this summer, kitted out in board shorts, bikinis or budgie smugglers. But a smaller group will swim into the sea wearing nothing at all.

00:16She's found community with nudists, known as naturists, who ditch their clothes.
00:21When you take your clothes off, you are literally the same. It doesn't matter where you come from.
00:25Public nudity is banned in Australia except at legal nude beaches.
00:30The nation got its first in South Australia 50 years ago.

00:38These days, there are close to two dozen legal nude beaches scattered across the country.
00:43If I'm this side and I'm naked, I'll get arrested. If I'm that side and I'm naked, I won't.
00:48Errol Masterson led the charge to have one registered on the New South Wales far south coast more than 30 years ago.
00:55We formed a lot of great friendships. People from all over Australia and all over the world have come here.
01:01While events like this naked swim in Tasmania are growing, these naturists are focused on keeping the beaches open.
01:09But Errol believes younger generations are less interested.
01:13There doesn't seem to be as much comrade amongst the people as what there used to be.
01:18Safety is also a consideration.
01:21The Australian Naturist Federation encourages people to wear a whistle while at nude beaches.
01:26It alerts the whole beach that you're in trouble.
01:29They're used to the critics, but these naturists want to remove any misconceptions.
01:35We are not strange. We are just people who are happy to be without our clothes on.
