00:00Here, it's just, it hasn't learned anything. Stop barking, right? Now come to daddy and sit. Sit.
00:13She can hear gunfire in the distance. She's not happy about it. Just give up.
00:18I know.
00:22I'm Henry Cole. That is comfy.
00:26And along with fellow fanatic Fuzz Townsend.
00:28That's a magnificent pair of choppers up there.
00:31We're back on the hunt for vintage treasures in the nation's sheds.
00:35Look at this.
00:37We're going to buy them, fix them.
00:39That is fantastic.
00:40And sell them for a tidy profit.
00:44Welcome to Shed and Buried.
00:49We're off to Redditch.
00:55Who are we going to see?
00:56We're going to go and see Ollie.
00:58Now, Ollie has a mixed bag today.
01:01An eclectic mix.
01:02Yeah, he has.
01:03All right.
01:04He has bikes.
01:05He has cars.
01:06Right.
01:07He might even have one or two larger vehicles as well.
01:10Oh, great.
01:11So there's a proper old selection.
01:14American, English.
01:16All kinds of stuff.
01:17Just fantastic.
01:18Yeah.
01:18I love the cut of Ollie's jeep already.
01:21Where we're going to today.
01:23I've had a little look on the sat-nav.
01:25And it's only about three miles from the Transport Museum at Whithall, of which I'm a patron,
01:31which has a lot of buses and also electrically powered delivery vehicles.
01:37Whether we come back with a bike, a car or an electric bread van from the Transport Museum, who knows?
01:46But Ollie's place in Redditch, here we come.
01:48How did you get into it, though?
01:53Have you done this since you were a kid or what?
01:55Yeah, I've always liked machines.
01:57Have you?
01:57Yeah.
01:58And do you do a bit of wheeling and dealing?
01:59Now and again.
02:00But it's kind of most of it your sort of personal collection.
02:03Yeah, yeah.
02:04All right.
02:04So is everything that we're going to see today, is it all for sale or selected items?
02:08Maybe.
02:09Oh, OK.
02:10Hey, look, mate.
02:11I'll tell you what we'll do then.
02:12We'll have a rummage about.
02:13Yeah.
02:13And then hopefully we might be able to do a deal, eh?
02:17Maybe, yeah.
02:17Yeah, fantastic.
02:18Sounds great.
02:19Well, why don't we start there?
02:21Yeah.
02:21Hey?
02:22Cheers, Ollie.
02:23Thanks, Ollie.
02:24Brilliant.
02:24We'll see you in a bit.
02:25OK, mate.
02:26See you in a bit.
02:26OK.
02:32Shall I go first?
02:33Yeah, go.
02:34Maybe some sofas.
02:35What?
02:35Wow, look at this.
02:37Oh, my Lord.
02:39This is a proper man cave.
02:41Isn't it?
02:42I mean, I could live in here.
02:46Ollie's first shed has got it all, but leaving aside the soft furnishings, we'll start with
02:52a Royal Enfield sidecar outfit.
02:56Bear in mind, I am a chap who likes a bus.
03:00There's something about this hand-built sidecar like this that is very, very lovely.
03:06The heyday of the sidecar was the 1950s, when hundreds of thousands were in regular use
03:16on British roads.
03:18In an era before cars were cheap and widely available, they were perfect family transport.
03:24Yeah, I think people would love this.
03:28I think people would just laugh at you as you're going along, and I guess that's good.
03:32Yeah.
03:32Do you know what I mean?
03:33I don't think they'd laugh.
03:34I think it would raise a smile, and also, I think it would be easy to sell.
03:38Oh, now there's something that's much more interesting.
03:45Now then, Fuzzlington.
03:48Oh, look.
03:48Shall we just move this just a little bit so we can get a decent look at it?
03:51Go on, then.
03:52Big single.
03:54Big single.
03:54BSA single, 500.
03:57In a chopper frame.
03:59Now, the thing that I adore, right, is, okay, look, you've got the Harley Sportster there.
04:04That's quintessential American.
04:06Yes.
04:06But as far as I'm concerned, a British chopper with a BSA or a Triumph or a Norton engine
04:12in it is just as quintessentially British.
04:15Yes.
04:16As a Harley is American.
04:17I totally agree with you, and I think, because of the sculptural nature of the British engines,
04:23they look so good in a chopper.
04:26Well, they do, and the chop, the whole styling of it.
04:29I mean, that is greasy biker.
04:31Yeah.
04:31And I love it.
04:35Moving on past the Landy Series 3 Lightweight.
04:41Having a Land Rover is a bit like owning a British bike.
04:44They are beautiful, they are lovely, but there are compromises when it comes to owning and
04:50using them.
04:53There's an Oldsmobile, Rocket 88.
04:56What is it about these American cars that just gets my soul?
05:01Perhaps I was, you know, in a past life, a traffic warden in America or something.
05:06Maybe.
05:07Yes.
05:07When you pass to the other side, maybe you'll become a highway ghost, a highway spectre.
05:13God, I could do it at Junction 12 with the M4.
05:19And a huge Honda Goldwing.
05:24Do you know what?
05:25I see these going down the road in the summer.
05:28Yeah.
05:28And people are out there, and I've seen them with a sidecar and a trailer.
05:33Yeah.
05:33It's just like, car?
05:36That has been invented.
05:38Hey, look, there's another shed over there.
05:40Shall we just put the gear over there?
05:41I'm with you.
05:41Come on then.
05:42Outside, the joy continues with a massive British truck.
05:51It's a Boston Austin.
05:52A Boston Austin K9.
05:54That's right.
05:55Now, the thing about this one is, well, I can see a little bit of rot over the windscreen
06:00there, but knowing how these vehicles can let go, it doesn't seem all that bad.
06:09Introduced in 1952, the Austin K9 was a robust military truck, which had many uses, from carrying
06:19signal equipment to working as a recovery vehicle.
06:23On the back there, that is a real kind of Heath Robinson crane, isn't it?
06:29Yeah.
06:30It might be a Harvey Frost crane.
06:32A what?
06:33Harvey Frost.
06:34Hey, I don't know whether I think...
06:36They're not particularly valuable.
06:37No.
06:38And you've got to meet the right person who really wants one of these.
06:42Who knows, come on.
06:43Shall we continue?
06:44Oh, tiny, but it's full of goodness.
06:54Yeah.
06:54Lots of lovely goodness.
06:59Look at that for a pillar drill.
07:01Now, that is utterly stupendous.
07:04So, we've got an old electric motor on the bottom there.
07:07Yeah.
07:08So, that's belt driven.
07:09So, two belts driving it.
07:10I mean, it's asking to have your fingers in there, isn't it?
07:14Isn't it?
07:15But it does look absolutely amazing.
07:19That's a beautiful thing.
07:20They don't make them like that anymore, Fazer.
07:22No, they don't.
07:23If you want to drill a big hole, there you go.
07:28And if you want to ride a bike, in here there are triumphs.
07:331980s Hondas.
07:34And a slightly knackered version of the world's most popular bike, the million selling.
07:40Honda Cub.
07:43You've been banging on about wanting a Cub for a long time.
07:46Yeah.
07:47I like Cubs.
07:48Yeah.
07:48Got any compression?
07:49Mmm.
07:50Not great.
07:52Oh, well.
07:52But, you know, there's a lovely little Cub.
07:56A bit of a clean-up.
07:57Good from far.
07:58And a new saddle on there.
07:59New seat cover.
08:00New front mudguard.
08:02In fact, new granny screen.
08:04Yeah.
08:04It's all starting to look really quite ropey, isn't it?
08:07Well, I think it's actually a potential donor for a custom C90.
08:13What do you think?
08:13It could be, but I do like them like this.
08:18So lots to choose from.
08:20But what are we going to go for?
08:21Okay, what else have we got?
08:25Well, there's that BSA single chopper.
08:28Yeah, I like that.
08:28That was really lovely.
08:29And, of course, the combination, the Royal Enfield combo.
08:33Yeah, we won't be worrying too much about that.
08:35There's the Rocket 88 we could find out about.
08:37Yeah, that's nice.
08:39Okay.
08:40Shall we ask the audience?
08:41Let's go and ask.
08:41Yeah, go on.
08:41Let's ask, are we?
08:49Well, there is the grey elephant in the room.
08:51What can you tell us about that, please, Ollie?
08:54The sidecar's 1950-era Bracknell.
08:57Yeah.
08:58Oh, yeah, okay.
08:58Yeah, and the bike is 2000 Royal Enfield.
09:03Is it for sale?
09:05Yeah, yeah.
09:05Oh.
09:063000.
09:07Okay.
09:08Yeah, yeah.
09:08Okay.
09:09Now, moving swiftly on, we've got ourselves a 54-plated Sportster Harley.
09:17That for sale?
09:18No, afraid not.
09:19That's a shame.
09:21Next to it is a little, is that a 350 BSA?
09:26Yes, yeah.
09:27I've noticed that there's no kickstart and no gear shifter on it.
09:31Have you got those?
09:32Yes, yeah.
09:33Oh, okay.
09:33Okay.
09:34So, any reason why they're off?
09:36To get it through a doorway.
09:38Ah.
09:38Because it used to be in the living room.
09:39Okay.
09:40I see.
09:41Right.
09:41So, not run for a while, then?
09:43Not for a while, but I have had it running, it sounds nice, yeah.
09:46Okay.
09:47How much is that?
09:49Two and a half.
09:50Oh.
09:51Okay, okay.
09:52Okay, okay.
09:52Now, look, we're leaning against a rather lovely Rocket 88, yeah?
09:58Ten.
09:59Right.
10:00Okay.
10:01Hey, that's Shell Repro Cam up on the rafters.
10:04Oh, I've no idea.
10:06You can have it if you want it.
10:07All right, great.
10:07I'll give you 50 quid for it.
10:08Yeah?
10:09Yeah, all right.
10:09Okay, so we're 50 quid in.
10:11Okay, there we are.
10:11All right.
10:12Two grand for that BSA.
10:15I'll give you two, three.
10:18Two, one, fifty?
10:20No.
10:20No, no, okay.
10:32We're in Redditch with Ollie, the owner of a perfect man cave,
10:36and an exquisite collection of cars and bikes.
10:39We've bid two grand on a BSA, but he wants 2,300.
10:46Two, three.
10:47Yeah.
10:47Yeah.
10:49Come on, mate.
10:49So that's two, three, fifty, including the can up in the rafters.
10:53I don't know how I'm going to get that down.
10:54I'll probably throw a brick at it or something.
10:56It'll come down that way.
10:58Oh, great, Ollie.
10:59Well, look, rock and roll, mate.
11:00Righto.
11:00Happy days.
11:01There we are.
11:02Fantastic.
11:02That's nice.
11:03Cheers, man.
11:06Next day, back at the ranch, we reveal all.
11:14Pretty good, didn't it?
11:15Mate, I love this.
11:16I love the stencil.
11:17I heard that.
11:18I love this.
11:19I knew you were going to love that, because that is everything that we adore about motorcycling.
11:24It is.
11:25That bobber look.
11:26Slightly raked out.
11:27Yep.
11:28Chunky 16-inch.
11:29I think it's 16, I don't know.
11:31Rear wheel.
11:32Lovely little thing.
11:33Mate, I love it.
11:33If it goes.
11:34I've already ordered a brake cable.
11:37Hopefully, I've ordered the right one for a change.
11:39Yes.
11:39Also, can I draw your attention to this, which came with it.
11:43We bought it at the price of a replica, if you see what I mean.
11:46Okay, but I like it anyway.
11:48Oh, it's double-sided as well.
11:49This thing is utterly lovely.
11:51Yeah.
11:52Now, obviously, the key, before we go any further, is to get it going.
11:56But, I love this bike so much, I've been dreaming about it.
12:00I may have real difficulty selling it.
12:04Go on, then.
12:04First things first, Fuzz and Skid reattach the missing kickstart and the gear lever.
12:14And then we clean the plugs.
12:18Have you noticed something in Skid?
12:20Normally, what happens when we've got to this bit, he's left, he's gone.
12:25But, he's interested in this.
12:27He is interested in this.
12:28So, he is hanging around.
12:29Yeah, that's right.
12:29And he's even getting involved.
12:31Yeah, look at that.
12:32I do have a missing.
12:32Albeit haphazardly.
12:34Our collective mood takes a dip, though, when Fuzz mounts up.
12:40Here we go.
12:43Not even a sign of a sparkette.
12:48Right.
12:49Before we get too involved with points, I think we should just put any new plug in,
12:53just in case that plug is knackered.
12:57Skid's medicine.
12:59I think that would work perfectly.
13:03Does something.
13:04Yes.
13:09Yes.
13:10Yes.
13:11Yes.
13:12But it's not perfect.
13:14It seems a little bit...
13:16Intermittent.
13:16Periodic.
13:17Yeah, intermittent.
13:18That's the word.
13:18I think that's going to need a rolling road to go.
13:22Yeah.
13:22Well, I think we should do the points.
13:24I think we should do the points as well.
13:28Fuzz and Skid jack up the bench, and I...
13:31Oh, I feel rather faint.
13:34Oh, here we are.
13:35Wait a minute.
13:36You'd better go and sit down somewhere, somewhere in the warm, with a hot sweet tea.
13:41Maybe a biscuit.
13:43The points are tiny electrical contacts at the heart of the magneto.
13:48Fuzz cleans them with emery paper.
13:50Love it.
13:51Right.
13:52Cap on.
13:53And then tries the kickstart again.
13:56Yes.
13:58Yes.
13:59Okay.
13:59Right.
14:00Let's get the plug in.
14:01Yeah.
14:01Get it down.
14:02Yeah.
14:02Give it a go.
14:03Yes.
14:03I might suggest that we use the rolling road.
14:06Yes.
14:07Just because I like my right knee.
14:12Outside, we rig up the roller starter.
14:17Fuel her up.
14:20And prime the carburettor with a puff of easy start.
14:24Right, you ready?
14:26Yep.
14:28A little bit of choke.
14:32Yes.
14:33Yes, it's running.
14:41What?
14:43I'll get you a lid.
14:44All right.
14:45Stay there.
14:47This is great, Fuzz.
14:48Fantastic.
14:49Thanks, Skid.
14:50I'll stick to my drive for the first pootle, but the engine's purring along.
15:06The good news is that it rides lovely.
15:16That's cool.
15:17The bad news is a few.
15:19One, oil leak.
15:21Yes.
15:22Two, I don't think I can find first.
15:24Yeah.
15:25And three, the front wheel's going a bit like that.
15:29Okay.
15:29Four, there's no front brake.
15:32And you've got a little fuel leak as well.
15:33And a five.
15:34And a five leak.
15:35So, all in all, a good test ride.
15:37Yeah, yeah.
15:38Yeah.
15:38But there's a few things to do.
15:40Yes, to deal with.
15:41After all that exertion, I take a high-level business, Nap, while Skid and Fuzz, get on with it.
15:51If you crack on with the kind of oil and engine department, Henry did get a front brake cable.
15:57Oh, cool.
15:58It looks about right.
15:59So, I'm going to fit this while you do that.
16:01I'll keep it out of your way.
16:02Okay.
16:02Fabulous.
16:05British bikes, BSA most definitely included, are notorious for their leakage.
16:11Fuzz replaces any worn washers, while Skid wrangles the brake cable.
16:18The cable he's got doesn't fit.
16:21Right.
16:21So, I'm just working out.
16:22I've got three options.
16:24Yeah.
16:24I think I can get one to work, but I'm just quietly working out which option I'm going to try and go for.
16:31Now, I might write the cable off, but hopefully not.
16:34No.
16:36Nothing's quite right on the cable, so Fuzz and Skid take it to the workshop.
16:41To make some adjustments.
16:43Here's our little end ferrule, and we need to reduce it by a couple of millimetres.
16:47So, that's reading 10.4 at the moment.
16:51I'll take it down to about 8mm.
16:52Yeah, maybe.
16:52Because we need clearance for the cable.
16:54Yeah, okay.
16:54The belt sander is not quite powerful enough, so Fuzz finishes it off with an angle grinder.
17:05Right, Fuzz, come on.
17:06Let's see if it's linished enough.
17:08Okay.
17:09Linished end in, and perfect.
17:11That is perfect.
17:12Yeah.
17:13That's great.
17:14So, look, that's the easy stage I hasten to add.
17:16Yes, I realise that.
17:17Don't get too excited yet.
17:19So, now, if I get this barrel in the end arm, I need that bottom adjuster.
17:26I need this ring here, above there.
17:29So, to do that, I've got to cut this down.
17:33Back in the workshop, they strip off the outer casing.
17:36Before returning to the bike to finish the installation.
17:44If I do that.
17:45Yeah.
17:46How's that?
17:47That's working, isn't it?
17:48So, yeah, that's happy days.
17:49We have a front brake.
17:51Right, so all we need to do now, fire it up and see how she rides.
17:58Before we do that, though, a couple of embellishments.
18:03You are going to adorn this with some rather lovely stickers that I've acquired.
18:06So, what I'm going to do, mate, I'm going to line up the back of the circle with the centre of the cap.
18:15Originally, the BSA logo was three letters with dots in between.
18:20But in 1946, to signal their wholesale move into bike manufacturing, the logo got wings.
18:28Do you know what's interesting, right?
18:30Is a badge like that, what, the pair cost me four quid?
18:33Right, yeah, yeah.
18:33Something like that.
18:33But that's probably added 250 quid to the bike.
18:40Together, we give our bobber a final spit and polish.
18:44And then, it's ready to ride.
18:54And we're off.
18:55So, skid's on my lovely little Norton called Bavis.
19:02Again, a single, but she's actually a 500, rather than this 350.
19:09But they just go perfectly together.
19:11Skid and fuzz have sorted out all the niggles, and the BSA's running sweetly.
19:24Just a lovely little thing.
19:26There's something rather reassuring about a single cylinder bike.
19:33It's that thud, thud, thud, thud.
19:37We haven't got time for a long shakedown, but it feels so much better than my first ride.
19:43Fantastic, man.
19:49Wasn't that lovely?
19:50The two of them together, they're very equally matched.
19:52Well, they're identical, really, aren't they?
19:53Yeah.
19:53Nice old singles.
19:55And it was lovely for the two of us to just be out.
19:57Doing the whole thing.
19:58Yeah, yeah.
19:59I'll tell you what, first gear is a mystery.
20:01You know, if you're going to ride that every day, right?
20:04You'd fettle that.
20:04Then you'd fettle that.
20:05And obviously, the next owner needs to do that.
20:10And talking of the next owner, I don't want to sell it, but sell it I must.
20:15And later that day, we get a punter, George, a mate who lives locally.
20:23What do you reckon?
20:24Do you like it?
20:25Really nice.
20:26Really, really good.
