00:00just for miles with rolling sand dunes as far as the eye can see not one
00:05footprint marks the untouched deep brown sand we are casting into wild ocean
00:11catching more fish than we can count but the adventure doesn't start here it
00:17starts deep in the African bush hunting one of the most dangerous animals on
00:21planet earth somewhere out there a white rhino is on the move his tracking collar
00:27has failed his protection is gone and he's due for critical immunizations the
00:32only way to help him is to find him on foot with a tranquilizer gun and a team
00:38of doctors waiting to step in but finding him means walking over 10 miles in
00:43brutal terrain tracking an animal that's already outsmarted poachers one that
00:48doesn't know we're here to help one that doesn't run away when he feels threatened
00:52i'm kyle green i travel the globe with my best friends hunting for wild game and
01:08dynamic conservation stories join us on our adventure as we escape the shackles of
01:13the modern world and gain a deeper understanding of where our food comes
01:16the white rhinoceros is the second largest land animal on earth only the
01:27elephant is bigger a full-grown male can weigh over 5,000 pounds with rare giants
01:33pushing 8,000 pounds they are built like tanks but they can run 30 miles per hour
01:39and detect you from hundreds of yards away on this massive South African
01:44preserve miles of thick bush stretch in every direction somewhere in it is the
01:50rhino we're after his tracking collar has failed the very device anti poaching
01:56teams used to stay close and protect him now he's vulnerable and he's due for
02:01immunizations and lab work which means we have to get close enough for a
02:05tranquilizer dart finding him won't be easy the bush can swallow an animal whole or
02:11send it charging right back at you when i woke up this morning i didn't think i was
02:16going on an actual hunt i figured we would just drive up dart the rhino and that would
02:20be that the biologist we met with painted a very different picture even a needle of
02:25this length will just get under the skin really yeah like and if it's perfectly perpendicular
02:31they're very quick we put the similar dart on a on an arrow they'll hit the arrow out of the air with
02:36their horn yeah yeah so as much as it's this big lumpy thing you think's not fast yeah if they're
02:43attentive they're incredibly fast you know you think a sharp thing like this you just need to shoot it
02:47at the animal to get stuck it won't sure they bounce off you can't believe how easily they pop right off
02:53the tranquilizer dart has to hit perfectly and with these guns that's easier said than done put it in
03:00the wrong place and you could actually kill the rhino i've killed a lot of animals without the drugs just
03:05with the needle no kidding yeah you can't believe even like short needle like this if it's just
03:10right i had a buffalo cow turn get it just between the ribs it cuts a little artery on a lung dead i
03:17had a hippo bull that jumped around the water and i got him under the eye and injected around the the
03:23nerve going to the brain killed it you know so even though it's just a needle we think uh but i'm
03:28telling you the needle in the right place can can be hazardous yeah this has a whole bunch of quirks but
03:35because it was made in the united states of america don't don't blame me gotcha it's my fault now
03:40yeah yeah i'm gonna go through all the things that go wrong first perfect so this has these o-rings
03:47on it the air comes out of here and goes into the barrel and invariably this thing will decide to do
03:54this oh yeah and then when you shoot it just goes pop yeah okay so and they didn't design this for
04:02rhino hunting because listen i try to hold it push it real closed and that's the quiet way and then
04:08tug on it make sure so yeah it wasn't made to be quiet i took a few practice shots with the tranquilizer
04:14gun to get the feel for it knowing that once i get close to the rhino on the stalk my shot has to be
04:21perfect my job will be to fire the tracker into him while dr alex lewis handles the tranquilizer dart
04:27the tracker helps us locate the rhino after he started because he could run for quite a while
04:33before the drugs take hold the tranquilizer won't knock him out it just makes him sit down like a
04:39dog but once he sits dr alex says he can't get up again so we'll tip him over carefully to fit him
04:46with the new collar and his immunizations the buffalo are fighting each other yeah wow
04:55he said that all these buffalo tracks are here and they're here fighting each other
05:00this is like where we're gonna get a buffalo bull or something popping up so just
05:05everyone pay attention i just need a quick 30 seconds to load up and we'll be just safe
05:10finding fresh buffalo sign changes everything cape buffalo are known as the black death one of the
05:21most dangerous animals in africa if we run into one of them in thick bush they won't run they'll come
05:28straight at us the cape buffalo is one of the big five and people have hunted it for many years because
05:33the cape buffalo is so dangerous and they're in here so that's something else you gotta watch for that's one
05:38that'll that'll just charge you yeah we don't want to surprise them no that's what when the charge is
05:44coming follow the greenway outdoors on all social platforms for our weekly podcast vlogs how to's
05:50merch and more powered by dynamo cx the greenway outdoors is brought to you by ram trucks nothing

06:08we are in south africa tracking down a white rhino who's in need of our medical attention and
06:17every step brings us deeper into his world along the way we're learning just how incredible and
06:22unpredictable this animal really is what do they eat mostly just grass yes so they're one of the best
06:30habitat rejuvenators because they just bolt graze nice that's what they're they eat
06:34it you'll see now so the their white comes from the dutch for wide weight okay which is a wide mouth
06:45okay and then english heard it is light as white oh it became a white rhino so it's actually a wide
06:52mouthed rhino but what you call it a white rhino leave it to us just be like down they're saying
06:56white i think moving with that yeah we are covering a massive amount of ground checking every one of the
07:03rhino's usual hangouts and coming up empty then nearly six hours and 10 miles into our hunt we
07:10finally hear tommy's whistle our signal that he has spotted the rhino
07:18tommy separated from us and he's whistling to us
07:23through the thick brush we see him at last but he's not alone a young female rests beside him now we've got
07:30two sets of ears two noses ready to catch the faintest scent or sound their bodies seem to blend into one
07:37in the thick brush but we have to make 100 certain we dart the right animal alex and i move in slow and
07:45silent closing the gap to dart gun range
07:59both darts hit their mark perfectly alex scrambles up a tree to keep eyes on him but the rhino slips out
08:06of sight fast okay so we're going to take off the drone right now it's kind of frantic going on right
08:11now everyone's yelling and running around we need to find the rhino fast it could fall and be in an
08:15awkward position and we got to get to it before it's there long aj is going to take up the drone
08:19to try and find it so you got to wonder if he's going to drop in a highly sunlit area or if he's
08:25going to drop in the shade because if he's in the shade these shadows are dark out here and it's way
08:29harder to see it's hard to see even hard to see just looking at this display wait a minute
08:34there might be something there is that it bring it down
08:43yep that's it it's right there which means it's that way
08:51we found the rhino sitting just like dr lewis said he would be now i was told once a tranquilized
08:57rhino was sitting he couldn't get back up so we moved in to begin our work this is a raw and uncut
09:03look at what happened next through the eyes of our cameraman andy get behind me get behind me
09:18andy get behind me i'll take him back to the car
09:39huh yeah i don't know they're pretty tough
09:43i'm tired are you good you think you're okay huh here let's let me look at you
09:51there's no screen there's nothing i could give up hey man you did great you did great perfect
09:55you did great here let me look at you
10:01you're okay you're okay actually you're perfect and you've got
10:05i'm embarrassed oh don't be embarrassed no no no no you have the ultimate story when the rhino charged
10:11andy fell into a bush and the rhino rammed into him with his horn we thank god that the rhino was
10:16dehorned less than a year ago because a sharp horn could have caused mortal damage andy is also lucky
10:23that in the chaos the rhino didn't step on him because that 6 500 pound animal would have crushed
10:29anything under it
10:30after the attack dr alex shot a second tranquilizer dart into the rhino to slow him down
10:39we lassoed his leg and guided him to a safe position on the ground from there the team went
10:45to work removing his faulty tracking collar and replacing it with a brand new one then we administered
10:51the immunizations he was due for and collected a blood sample to check his overall health
11:01it's okay bud talking with tommy and the people here it's not about the experience of like getting
11:06to do this hunt it's about the experience of protecting the rhino you know people here are
11:10emotional about this so thank you for the support and we appreciate it without guys like you yeah this
11:16this animal will probably die right right well if it wasn't for people like you that cared so much
11:22and actually do everything they can to try and help the rhino it's beautiful man thanks for having me
11:27thanks thank you the greenway outdoors is brought to you by ram trucks nothing stops ram and by bass pro
11:36shop and cabela's your adventure starts here eagle fishing tactical fishing gear for the savvy angler
11:44onyx hunt know where you stand with the number one hunting app sea dew live the sea dew life
11:57in south africa our work began deep in the bush tracking darting and helping a white rhino in need
12:04now our mission shifts to the edge of the continent where the land gives way to the vast indian ocean
12:11we are on the shores of saint lucia joined by tommy's friend jeff to tag reef fish for critical
12:17scientific research most people picture africa's wildlife as hippos giraffes and elephants but here
12:26the coastline tells a different story towering dunes roll into powerful surf mile after mile of untouched beach
12:35stretches without a footprint in sight this too is wild africa and it's every bit is untamed
12:51i don't know what's biting out there so generally i have a little bit of everything i have little baby
12:56squids i have prawn i have a mackerel i have a little sardine called a red eye i have a different type
13:05of prawn a white prawn and so with that mixture hopefully we get lucky with something this weight
13:12here he attaches it with this little clip to the bait to get everything catapulting out together then
13:18once this rests it kind of detaches over time this sits on the bottom and then this is kind of a little
13:24bit about a foot off the bottom there and just waving around in the waves and the foam helps it float
13:28and everything eats squid everything i'm ready let's do it yep at low tide the reef that we're targeting
13:36sits about 75 yards from shore so you've really got to launch your cast then it's all about watching
13:43the rod tip and feeling for tugs almost immediately i feel bites
13:52yes it's on down i think it's a small fish but i think you're on yeah but we got them
13:58there were so many little taps and i didn't know this is a really powerful rod so i just don't know
14:04you know how big the fish is because it may feel small even though it's bigger because of the big rod but
14:10it doesn't feel huge but it's cool to hook up so fast oh my word there's a special snapper right
14:16that's him that's the one that's the one we're looking for but we want his grandfather that's a
14:23snapper this is one of my favorite fish to eat anywhere in the world snapper means good eating fish
14:29they're a reef fish you can spot him right away i mean this shape the face everything looks like a snapper
14:34but those are great eating this is an exclusive greenway outdoors driven to the catch brought to you by ram trucks
15:04the greenway outdoors is brought to you by ram trucks nothing stops ram and by bass
15:34pro shops and cabela's your adventure starts here lem game processing equipment wilderness athlete
15:42fuel for the rugged rufus teague seasoning sauces and snacks ski-doo experience that ski-doo feeling
15:51summit tree stands hunting elevated blokes modern men's health
16:04we are in saint lucia south africa casting into the indian ocean and hooking reef fish right from shore
16:12struck very well he's got the good head shakes going yeah this is a three-spotted papanu so he's got
16:21these spots along the side here very literal name
16:42so this fish right here is a fish that we're going to tag for the program for conservation
16:48it's absolutely gorgeous looks like it's got blue speckles on the back and are we ready to do it
16:52yeah so so it's basically from the head to the fork length so 48 centimeters okay
16:59now i'm going to just pick a spot take out one scale and then it goes boom this tag number is the
17:06tag that on the tag on the fish and then i'll write down all the details now where it was caught
17:12they'll actually gps the coordinates and then give them the gps coordinates of of that fish and it'll
17:17go into a database and hopefully somebody catches it again and then what will that tell them if they
17:22catch it how big it's got how far it's moved etc etc the sad part is there are people that don't
17:28give the data back again they'll take the fish or they even if they kill the fish we we want them to
17:33just send us the tag information so they can remove it off the database and they just go it's killed
17:39a program in the united states especially in my home state of michigan is like you're supposed to
17:42report how many geese you've harvested how many ducks you've harvested that information helps our
17:46department of natural resources this program helps them know how much the fish is grown you know and
17:52learn their tendencies so that we can learn about conservation absolutely and and especially with
17:56those reefs fish because they tend to be residential but if you have get do get odd one that'll move
18:0250 40 kilometers yeah amazing you know and so yeah no friends at the old joint yeah yeah maybe
18:09something like jeff yeah exactly exactly that jeff at its core this episode has been about one thing
18:18protecting what matters for us that meant helping a white rhino in the bush and targeting reef fish in
18:25the indian ocean conservation isn't just about the animals it's about the people the communities
18:31and the future tied to them the meat we harvested on this trip fed hungry families the money we spent
18:37helped support local economies and the science we contributed to gave the researchers new tools
18:43to further conservation in the book of proverbs the bible says that the righteous care for the needs of
18:48their animals this verse is more than a command it's a reminder that god entrusted us with his creation
18:56here in africa that means stepping in when people and nature both need a hand protecting wildlife while
19:03strengthening the communities around it out here that truth has never seemed so important this is
19:10this is conservation this is community this is the greenway outdoors
19:40how to affect the world so it could be the use of them in a community
19:41where you're covering the earth and how you're covering the animals which are in the
19:45place of being created and how you're covering the forest as you can see you can see you can see
19:48or see the left is a community that you're down there you're looking at your land
19:49so table is absolutely not able to see the rivers and water and water
19:52that's been there's a big issue that you can see in the United States
19:55that you can see here even though they and that you can see here so which is the
19:58you can see in the north of the ihracarean bar
20:00and you can see the earth again the field of the tree there's almost
20:03the right that you can see there's been really nice
