00:00Humphrey and along with fellow fanatic Fuzz Townsend
00:03That's a magnificent pair of choppers up there. We're back on the hunt for vintage treasures in the nation's sheds
00:11We're gonna buy them fix them. That's fantastic and sell them for a tidy profit
00:19Welcome to shed and buried
00:25We're on our way to toaster in Northamptonshire
00:30So look, we're gonna go see John. Is that right? Yeah, that's right now John. Yeah, he's into his
00:37Agricultural stuff. Oh, is he? He's a farmer. Oh, okay. Yeah. What so he's got tractuares. Yeah
00:44That was the first word by the way I ever said
00:46Tractua. Yeah. Yeah, so he's got tractuares and implements. Yes got all of those things
00:53That's interesting. Your first word was tractua. Yeah, my first word was bus
00:57You jumped it really? Yeah, it was literally. No, is it? Yeah, it was
01:04Whether we come back with a tractuares, a bus you are or some other you are who knows but toaster here we come
01:14So tell me so you've got the farm here, but we are surrounded by rather bucolic and lovely
01:20Machinery mm-hmm just stuff. I like nothing particular. Just
01:26Odds and things. Okay, so has this been the family farm for a long time? Oh, yes five or six generations
01:32Wow, really really? Yeah, so you've got a big eclectic mix of stuff here. Is it all for sale? Yes
01:38Yes, most of it. Yeah. Okay, brilliant. All right, so look John what we'll do is we'll have a little rummage about
01:44Yeah, yeah, okay
01:45Well quite a big rummage about I hope yeah, and then at the end of it
01:49Hopefully you might be able to have a haggle, but I might get you in just to give us some more details on some stuff
01:53You know what I mean? Crack on then. Well done mate. Here look congratulations. Cheers guys
01:57What a lovely cup of tea it is. Yeah, thank you for having us down here. Thanks John. Right, we're starting that way. Come on
02:05Where do you want to start then? Well, let's start with an Alice Chalmers, shall we? Okay, now I
02:10Do like this. They always remind me of a pig
02:15What? It's the snout I think. That's what does it
02:18Founded in 1901 Alice Chalmers was an American company which built agricultural and construction vehicles in the UK
02:30They were mainly known for their light tractors, though their crawlers were popular, too
02:35Do you know what I have to tell you in all these years? Yeah, we've never taken a proper sized crawler. You see this is nice though
02:42Isn't it? I like this then fuzz spot something
02:46What is that?
02:49This is a bus
02:52Can I just change that just one word in that sentence? Yeah is to wars
02:57It was a bus. Okay. Now, it's just a bit of twisted metal. Look, it's still got springs on the front
03:02It's still got a steering column handbrake. I mean, well, that is amazing
03:09It's just twisted metal forget it. Well, honestly, I can see that it was once a bus. Okay, but this once and always has been
03:18A crawler. That's great now. It is a crawler a potential acquisition
03:26Before fuzz discovers another squash bus time to move on
03:31Now then
03:34What do you reckon baby?
03:36So what is what? Okay, so what this is? Yeah, it's a way. It's a finger bar mower. Okay, so
03:43Simple as that
03:44Well, yeah, that flattens down. Yeah, right and it's offset
03:47So if you're cutting hay or whatever you're trundling along but you're not wrecking the hay because you're cutting the row that's next to you
03:54If you see got you yes, okay, so yeah, so you sit up on here
03:58Oh, Albion. How beautiful is that? It is very lovely as a piece of old
04:04Implementation if you see what I mean, it's just lovely. It is beautiful. There's so much more. Come on. Okay, let's go
04:14Well, let's start off with a bit of blue, right? No with this with this. Yeah, okay
04:19That's a Ford 4000. Yeah, which looks well, so it's certainly
04:25Done some work in its life and still does
04:28What is that? Well, if I'm not very much mistaken, this is a
04:33Ford Model T
04:37Released in 1908 the Model T was the world's first mass production car over 15 million were built but few look like this
04:46John
04:48John, this is one crazy thing. So is he right in saying it was a based on a Model T?
04:52Oh, yeah, so this is what the kids would have done to your dad's car if he'd have let them
04:58Really is that it? Yeah, yeah, they still race them in America
05:02Do they like this you have to hand crank them then jump in and start yeah, and off you go
05:07Yeah, how cool is that? I think it's a really lovely thing. Did you build this one?
05:12No, I bought it as a bit of a dog. Yeah, and then got it fettled up and and running. Yeah
05:19What does it do maybe 45 45? Yeah
05:22Yeah, you've got one good break on the back. Yeah
05:26And it's all right. Yeah, a lot of fun 45 miles an hour and this would be like
05:31145 or something else. Yeah, yeah, thrills per mile per hour are very high
05:36Next door he's got another eccentric custom based on Britain's version of the Model T
05:47An Austin 7
05:491929 or 30. Yeah converted to a tractor in
05:551937 okay, and the logbook has got Austin tourist struck out and
05:59Tractor written in and I think right it was used because of the boxes picking lettuce
06:07It's got another gearbox and it will go ever so slow
06:11Wow, okay, so I think you could pick your lettuce put the trains. Oh, yes. Got it. I got it
06:17I got it
06:18You got your normal Austin 7 gearbox there. Yeah, and then it's driving through another gearbox here
06:24So that's amazing. So the output of that one will be in in top gear will be one to one
06:30But you can have that in first gear and this one in first gear and it would be super slow. Wow
06:37Well, it's an amazing thing. I tell you what is also amazing John is your workshop. It's warm
06:43There's so much space all the machineries there the lays the pillar drills. Yeah, my god, it's just fantastic
06:48So this was a British Army flat pack workshop
06:53Yeah, and it's reckoned the engineers could put one up in a couple of hours
06:57Gosh, I wonder if there are any more available
07:00Just think we could do with a shed you could throw one side. Just think how many
07:05tractors helicopters
07:07motorcycles
07:08Look at that. Look at the size of the garage door. Exactly. You can get anything in. Imagine what you could get through there. Yeah
07:15Double-decker. Hey, come on. So look, we've got one more ship to have a look at
07:18So can it get any better? Maybe it can
07:28Oh my god, that's amazing now that is a Cummins V8 engine is it so I don't know if it's like a V8 200 or something like that
07:35So look at it. I would imagine that at some time in the 1960s. Maybe
07:42I've never seen one of these in the flesh
07:44Right now. Well, nor have I I mean, do you know anything about these?
07:48Not much really, but I think versatile is a Canadian company
07:52Yeah, which made these equal wheel tractors
07:55And it's home really mate is on either the Canadian or the American prairie. Yeah, do you know what I mean?
08:04Founded in 1963
08:06Versatile is a relatively new kid on the block
08:08Specializing in large four-wheel drive tractors
08:14It is quite a phenomenal machine and my god
08:18Blimey, if you saw that coming again out of the way, wouldn't you?
08:21You would, yeah
08:22I can imagine you driving around the Cotswolds
08:25On it
08:26On that
08:27So could I
08:29I really could
08:30This is something very special
08:32Yeah
08:33Hey, okay, so look, there's that, right?
08:35Well, we've seen the the crawler, the uh
08:37Alice Chalmers
08:38Yeah, the Alice Chalmers one
08:39There's the Model T Speedster
08:42Yeah, that's very
08:43And there's also that lovely Albion finger bar mower
08:47Either way, we could be in the business of getting something quite chunky
08:52I think so, yeah
08:53Chunky
08:54Shall we go and see John?
08:55He's in the workshop now
08:56All right
08:57Let's go
09:05Let's start on some prices, shall we?
09:08I'm going to ask you about the Model T Speedster
09:12Oh, right
09:13Ooh
09:14Nice
09:14That's available?
09:15Yes
09:168,000
09:18Okay
09:18Okay
09:19All right
09:20There is what I think is a finger bar mower, Albion
09:23Oh, the Albion, yes
09:24Yeah
09:25It's my son's
09:26Uh-uh
09:28Right
09:28And I would have thought
09:30400 pounds
09:32Okay
09:33Okay
09:33Okay, now there is the orange Alice Chalmers
09:37Yep
09:38It's a good one
09:39Is it?
09:40And how much would that be?
09:41Three
09:42Three
09:42Okay
09:43What about in the other shed?
09:45Yes
09:46Going very, very large
09:48Oh yeah, is that versatile available?
09:50Oh yes
09:51To you?
09:52Twelve
09:54Oh God
09:54John, I'm so sorry
09:56Can I make you an offer?
09:58The Alice Chalmers
09:59And the Albion
10:01What happens if we did three the lot?
10:05Three three would be nice
10:08We're over in toaster with John and his extraordinary collection of tractors and eccentricities
10:25We've bid three grand on a crawler and a mower but he wants a little more
10:31Three three would be nice
10:33Three three would be nice
10:35I think we should because I think there's a market for the crawler
10:39Yeah
10:40And there's fun to be had with the
10:41Well we've got to get the finger bar now
10:43The finger bar, yeah
10:44Yeah
10:44So I think as a combo that's not a bad little
10:48Subject to my son coming home from school and agreeing
10:52Right, okay
10:54But you're his father
10:55That does not carry any weight
10:58Okay, well look
11:00Provisionally it's three three
11:01Three three
11:02Yeah
11:02Lovely
11:02Next day we're back at the ranch and the good news is John's son has agreed to sell us the mower
11:13I just wanted an implement that we can tow behind this
11:18You can be driving the finger bar or I will
11:21Yeah
11:21Can I just say that that is lethal
11:24Yes
11:24Yeah
11:25This is lethal in any hands
11:27Whatever you don't want to do because you're scared
11:30I'll do it because if I get my arm cut off well it's my fault
11:38The main item though is our not so creepy crawler
11:44I'll be honest I have no clue how to I know this is left and right
11:48Yeah I have a clue
11:49But clutches and gears and
11:51It's got twin brakes and twin brakes
11:52Yeah
11:52All I know is it's like a tank and I've driven tanks before
11:55Can I just point out one thing you're assuming this runs
11:59There's a challenge then hey
12:00Let's give it sparks up
12:01Look mate I'll tell you I brought me mates around this time
12:04Right
12:04You don't mess with us because there's four of us
12:06Okay
12:07And we're going to get going and we're going to go and do some cutting
12:13Task number one
12:14Fit a new battery and check if the engine starts
12:17Ready?
12:20We're going to throttle half way
12:29Yay!
12:32Isn't that fantastic?
12:37The old tricks are the best aren't they
12:39But sadly after all the pyrotechnics the next hour is not quite so spectacular
12:44The engine refuses to idle
12:51Well it wants to doesn't it?
12:56Allen and Fuzz remove the spark plugs
13:00They're dry but very sooty
13:04They burn off the crud with a blow torch
13:07And then top up the petrol tank but it doesn't get any better
13:11The car is pouring fuel out
13:16It's literally just pouring out
13:20Then Allen spots something
13:22The switch to choose whether the crawler runs on petrol
13:25or TVO a cheaper fuel has been marked up wrong
13:29That means up up is on there
13:33Oh okay
13:33Up up is on
13:35Okay
13:35He wrote it on there look
13:36John's throw Laguna
13:37Petrol that way
13:38It seems to be up Ron
13:40But it's up
13:41John
13:43So do all our problems come down to a mislabeled switch
13:49Here we go
13:49Fingers crossed
13:59Yes
13:59Yes
14:01Don't eat
14:04That's a huge big old engine isn't it
14:07Very very old-fashioned
14:09Is it warm yet?
14:10Nearly
14:11Yeah
14:16Watch out of the way
14:18Yeah it's going
14:19It's going
14:21We're rolling
14:23We're rolling
14:23I'm really scared
14:36I'm not surprised
14:37All you've got to do now
14:39is do a three-point turn
14:40I know
14:41I've got to turn it round
14:43Get like that
14:44I have never
14:45I hasten to add
14:46driven one of these
14:48That's it
14:48That's it
14:49That's it
14:49Go on son
14:51That's it
14:51That's it
14:53Let it go
14:55Hey
14:59And you turn it off
15:00I don't know
15:02One nice idle
15:03Yeah
15:06That
15:08Was one of the most frightening
15:10drives of my life
15:11You said you had to do a wheelie
15:13and you almost did a wheelie
15:14If you have that on full beans
15:16Yeah
15:16And just dump the clutch
15:17You're going to go over
15:18It's going to go up like that
15:19Anyway look it runs and it drives
15:21Yes
15:21That's fantastic
15:22Brilliant stuff
15:23So I think the next thing to do
15:24Give it a wash
15:26And then
15:26Well let's go cutting shall we
15:30First things first
15:32We're going to spruce up
15:33The star of the show
15:37Having a bit of a slosh then are you?
15:39Yeah just getting the worst of this grease off the top
15:41Because otherwise the jet wash won't do anything to it
15:44So this will loosen it
15:45Great
15:46Just tell me when I can start jet washing
15:47Give me about five minutes
15:49All right
15:50So you can go and make the tea
15:57For a crawler like this mud is a badge of honour of course
16:00But some of the mud looks like it's from the crustacean period
16:06Well the minute we go to the field with this
16:08It's going to get covered in poo again
16:10Yeah but that's like saying I'm not going to clean my motorbike because I'm going to use it
16:13Oh yeah okay
16:17Ten gallons later it's done
16:22Right the finger bar I reckon that should get the same treatment give that a whizzer
16:26Yes
16:27Yeah
16:29We make swift work of the finger bar mower but as it's drying
16:33Skid notices that one of the levers needs a bit of attention
16:39Next day he catches the early worm and starts work on the problem before I arrive
16:46Now look I noticed that this little flimsy rod for the release mechanism
16:51Yeah
16:51I did bend that over give it a pull and it just let go straight away
16:55Is that why this can't come down now?
16:56I think so
16:57I'm going to make a thicker rod and that fits in I've checked that
17:01All right
17:02And I'll put a nut on there so it can't come out
17:04All right
17:05So all I've got to do now is bend this sideways towards me
17:09And put a nut on there
17:11And it's done
17:11And then we'll see hopefully it'll hold out
17:12I mean bending this like that it might weaken it
17:15But I think it'll be strong enough
17:16All right
17:16Skid's using a threaded rod
17:22Before he reshapes it he gets it red hot
17:28Once he's bent it like Beckham he calls it down in a handy puddle
17:33And then checks the fit
17:36Well it's the perfect length I've just got to cut these off
17:40Put a nut on and I'm just hoping that bending it like that hasn't weakened it too much
17:46Once it's cut to length skid fixes some dome nuts on the ends
17:51And then makes sure the mechanism works
17:56That's it and that is locked in
17:59And now get on the seat then
18:00Oh yeah
18:01Can I just say something
18:03What?
18:04This behind that caterpillar
18:05Yeah
18:06Is going to be truly truly terrifying
18:09Next morning we hitch the mower up to the tractor
18:17And head for my field
18:26Right so then boys
18:28Okay now obviously we're not going to cut the whole field
18:31Yeah
18:31No
18:32We're just going to make
18:33Well what we're going to do one run
18:35So you see if it works
18:36So you can master the controls
18:38I'm going to get on there
18:39And I haven't got a clue what I'm doing
18:40But I'm sure we'll work it out
18:42Well that makes two of us mate
18:43Just go slowly
18:44I will
18:45I'll squeeze in with you
18:54Here we go skid
19:00It's not cutting
19:01Oh no
19:02Well the tractor works
19:04The tractor works really well
19:06The albion looks more like it's raking the grass than cutting it
19:12Until skid remembers to yank that front lever
19:20It's working
19:21It's working
19:22Yes
19:22It's working
19:22Yes
19:22Yes
19:23We're cutting grass
19:24It works
19:26We're cutting grass
19:29Our 1950s crawler and our even older mower are not exactly state of the art
19:36We're cutting grass
19:38Oh yeah
19:41I should use a gliss on the back
19:42Yeah
19:43Don't worry
19:43You'll be naked
19:44You'll be dead as well
19:48But how fantastic to get them both up and running
19:53All we need now is someone to buy them
19:56Next day we find the perfect punter
20:05Josh is a local collector who we've sold to before
20:08What do you reckon mate it's a sort of oh it's nearly a colour match
20:14Almost I like it a bit of our agricultural history
20:17Now more importantly though don't you love our finger bar mower
20:21Not really I'll be honest with you
20:23Screams death trap to me
20:26Three and a half grand for the crawler
20:27Um three three for the crawler
20:33Shake hands
20:33Really
20:34Is it that easy
20:35Your profit's in that thing
20:36I'm going to start going down
20:37All right okay
20:40There we go
20:40Yeah
20:41Thanks mate
20:41Yeah
20:42Always shake hands
20:42Well done Josh
20:43That's a good deal for both parties
20:44It is mate
20:45Just don't injure yourself on it
20:46It is lethal
20:47Okay so look that's good
20:48I mean honestly mate
20:50Close your ears
20:50That means we've got to get our money back
20:52Money all right
20:53That's our profit in the finger bar mower
20:55Yes so we're not heading for early retirement
20:57No we're not mate
20:59But we need to forge on and be a cut above the rest
21:03Very good
21:04Yeah you're on form today
21:06I am
21:06Yeah
21:07Come on then I'll make you a cup of tea
