00:00A machine takes up a lot of room.
00:01One, two, three, four, five, six, pinball.
00:05Seven?
00:06When a prize collection turns home life into chaos,
00:10it's time for a renovation intervention.
00:14I'm Bobby Burke.
00:16I help people transform their spaces
00:17to get their lives back in order.
00:20But to help pay for it,
00:21will they be willing to sell off
00:23some of their precious treasures
00:24to get the home they dream of?
00:30I'm Patrick.
00:37And I collect marionettes, puppets, and figurines.
00:43I think all of this started
00:44when I used to hang out with my dad on weekends.
00:46Then he would take me out
00:47to, like, amusement park trips and arcades.
00:51And I started to realize
00:52there was a lot of value
00:53in all of these collectibles and figurines that they sold.
00:56And I thought, I want to have some of those.
00:58I got a new piece today.
00:59Ooh.
00:59Let's see what we got.
01:01My collection fills not only my condo,
01:04but it also fills an entire storage space off-site.
01:07It would be another limited edition.
01:10Oh, my God.
01:11It's all become such a huge conglomeration of stuff.
01:15It's just one big pile at this point.
01:17I'll just put it in the display with the others.
01:20Great.
01:21I'm Roger.
01:22The first time I came over Patrick's place,
01:24I was like, whoa.
01:27That's a lot.
01:28It's grown since the four years that we've met.
01:32And he's still a collector, and I love him.
01:34But I would like a new space for us.
01:37Something needs to change, for sure.
01:39Patrick is super passionate about his collection
01:46for marionettes and figurines,
01:48but it's left no space in their home
01:50for him or his partner, Roger.
01:52So with my 20 years of design experience,
01:55I really want to help them wrangle that chaos
01:57and get everything under control.
01:58Hi.
02:02Hi.
02:02Welcome.
02:04How are you?
02:05I'm Bobby.
02:06Nice to meet you.
02:07Bobby.
02:07Hey.
02:09I'm Roger.
02:10Roger.
02:10Thank you for having me over, guys.
02:12Thank you for coming.
02:12Show me the collection.
02:14Let's dive right in.
02:15Here's the first of them.
02:16Figurines, music boxes, dolls, marionettes
02:24from all walks of life.
02:27That's the one spot to eat.
02:29We are defaulting to the living room
02:31because there is no dining room right now.
02:32I see that.
02:32It's a collector's room.
02:33I see that.
02:34It's a lot.
02:34Bobby.
02:36There's so much.
02:37Don't hold back.
02:38I'm not.
02:39There's a lot.
02:40I was so proud of my collection
02:42and I thought he would go,
02:43well, this is amazing.
02:44And what he did instead was, oh.
02:47It's overbearing, to say the least.
02:50You're seeing a cornucopia of things
02:53all in one room.
02:54You're seeing my arcade games.
02:56Your collection is definitely vast
02:58and not specific.
03:00Right.
03:01Very convoluted.
03:02Which, can I be honest?
03:03Sure.
03:04One might call hoarding.
03:05Not that word.
03:10Not that word.
03:12I don't see a common theme.
03:14A pinball machine takes up a lot of room,
03:17as you can see.
03:18It sure does.
03:18One pinball machine takes up a lot of room.
03:20Yeah.
03:21Again, there's one, two, three, four, five,
03:23six pinballs.
03:25Seven?
03:25Oh, one's off-site.
03:26When it's something this large,
03:29you're like, this better be changing your life
03:31to be taking up this much of your life.
03:33True.
03:33There really is no living space left in this place.
03:35There is barely a spot for both of them
03:37to sit and enjoy each other's company.
03:40Besides the pinball machines,
03:41like, and St. Nick here,
03:43what does your collection really consist of?
03:45It's a lot of Disney memories.
03:47I worked there at one time,
03:48so that's how a lot of this happened.
03:50Right.
03:50I have my favorite characters,
03:52favorite shows,
03:52and they're all represented in what I chose to buy.
03:55But now, I can't just say,
03:56okay, pack them up, put them in a garage sale,
03:58because they have worth.
04:00So if I can get back some of what I spent,
04:02I'm okay with that.
04:03I don't want to lose anything in this process.
04:06I want to make sure it's a gain.
04:07I want to have some kind of reward
04:09for having these things procured for decades.
04:12I know there's more to see, though,
04:13so let's move on to the next rooms.
04:14Okay.
04:14Okay.
04:15Let's head to the office.
04:16You're doing your happy dance?
04:17Hey, Jake.
04:19This is Disney figurines
04:21carried over from the living room.
04:23Whoa, it's a lot.
04:24Believe it or not,
04:25this is where I spend all my days working.
04:28Why?
04:28Okay, so this is where you work.
04:32You sit amongst this pile.
04:34This is where I work.
04:35Do you do a lot of zooms?
04:36I do.
04:36I assume you put on a virtual background.
04:38Absolutely.
04:40And then he's just dying
04:41for Halloween season to come around.
04:43Aw, he's cute.
04:44I love them.
04:44Yeah, I think they're this.
04:46He loves these.
04:47Okay.
04:47So to me,
04:48that makes me want to do something
04:49very special with these.
04:50Right.
04:51Let's go back out
04:52in the pinball machine room,
04:53talk about design features
04:54I have in mind.
04:55Okay.
04:56So in this collection,
04:57how has it affected your relationship?
04:59Well,
05:00there was a point
05:01where I was living here full time
05:04and it just got a little much.
05:05So you're not living here
05:06full time anymore?
05:07No.
05:08So it's affecting your relationship
05:09in a major way.
05:11Yeah.
05:11I felt this was the museum
05:15of all his treasures.
05:18It wasn't our home
05:20and I needed my own space.
05:24It's reached a point
05:25where he is so frustrated
05:26with all of my collecting
05:28that he feels like he's second fiddle.
05:30And I agree,
05:31that's not fair.
05:32If he doesn't change,
05:34where do you think that leaves you?
05:37I don't see me like,
05:39it's a lot.
05:44It's like,
05:44you know,
05:45either this or...
05:49If I don't do something
05:51about this now,
05:52I could lose my relationship entirely.
05:56And what good is it
05:58to have a collection
05:59surrounding you
05:59when you have no one
06:00to share it with?
06:01So I don't want that to happen.
06:04Roger,
06:04so if we get this under control,
06:06if he agrees
06:07to pare the collection down,
06:09will you move back in?
06:11I would love that.
06:13Obviously right now,
06:14we're going to help you
06:14pare this down.
06:15We're going to help you guys
06:16mend your relationship.
06:18So here's what I want to do.
06:19For our design,
06:21let's revamp your living room
06:22with some new flooring
06:23and furniture
06:24and cohesive cabinetry
06:26with lighting
06:27to really showcase
06:28the rest of your collection.
06:29In the office,
06:30we can clean out the space
06:31and put in some beautiful
06:32built-in custom cabinetry
06:34that will really put
06:35your collection
06:36on full display.
06:37Another one
06:38that I would personally do
06:38is I noticed
06:39you have a linen closet
06:40right by the office door.
06:43I would love
06:43to confiscate that space
06:45and turn it into
06:46a marionette display cabin.
06:48Oh my God.
06:49To where they're actually
06:49hanging in there.
06:50They're lit.
06:52Because they really are,
06:53out of everything in here,
06:54and I think you feel
06:55the same way as well,
06:56they're my favorite things in here.
06:57They're very unique
06:57and they're very special.
06:59That's really cool.
07:00Yeah?
07:00Yeah?
07:00Yeah.
07:01Okay.
07:01So what is your budget?
07:03Like $20,000.
07:04And that's what you
07:05were starting with,
07:06so that's before
07:07even selling anything.
07:08So for $20,000,
07:09I can do a decent amount.
07:10But to really customize
07:11your space
07:12and to give you
07:12the best storage solutions,
07:14I'm going to need
07:15about another $12,000.
07:17Yeah.
07:18I'm going to bring in
07:18an expert.
07:18I'm going to come back
07:19with him,
07:20and we're going to start
07:20evaluating this.
07:21Yeah, awesome.
07:22And at that point,
07:22you guys can start seeing
07:23what's a value,
07:24what's a not,
07:25and decide what you want to do.
07:26Yeah?
07:26That sounds great.
07:27All right.
07:31Hi, how you doing?
07:32I'm Bob.
07:32Nice to meet you.
07:33I'm Rob, and I'm an archivist.
07:36I've been archiving
07:37for about 35 years now.
07:38Bobby called me
07:39to come take a look
07:40at a collection
07:41owned by Patrick,
07:42who I hear is a big collector
07:43of Disney memorabilia.
07:46Right off the bat,
07:47I'm seeing the Mary Blair,
07:49It's a Small World.
07:50These.
07:51Those are going
07:51for quite a bit now,
07:53$75 to $300, depending.
07:56I'm seeing just
07:58a wonderful collection.
07:59Oh, the monorail.
08:00Very sought after.
08:03What are things
08:03like this worth?
08:04$1,500 of those were made.
08:06That's probably worth...
08:07Oh, the monorail over here.
08:11That's a Kevin and Jody piece.
08:13Yeah.
08:13That's probably
08:14about $1,000.
08:16People love the monorail,
08:18and it's still there at Disney.
08:19I love the monorail.
08:20Yeah.
08:20Yeah.
08:20To me, these stand out
08:23because they take up
08:25a lot of space, huh, Roger?
08:27Yeah, they do.
08:28What are things
08:29like this worth?
08:30These are called big figs,
08:32and they can get very valuable.
08:34At least $300 to $500.
08:37I mean, I could imagine
08:39parting with not all,
08:42but maybe some.
08:43Get it out.
08:44Oh.
08:46Off to the next room.
08:47Ouch.
08:47So now we're in the arcade.
08:51Wow.
08:52Yeah.
08:52Classic pinball machines
08:53in working condition.
08:55Those are very, very valuable
08:57these days.
08:58Each one of these games
08:58would easily be
08:59in the $3,000 to $5,000 range.
09:01Oh.
09:02So, I mean,
09:03are you willing
09:04just to part with these?
09:05Because, again,
09:06this pays for
09:07almost all your renovations.
09:09Oh.
09:11Uh, sort of, yes.
09:13You know,
09:13kind of an iffy
09:14at this point, maybe.
09:16I mean, he seems a bit reluctant
09:17to get rid of
09:17all the pinball machines,
09:18and honestly,
09:19to make that living space usable,
09:20they have to go.
09:21But I think with Roger's help,
09:23we'll get him
09:24to where we need to be.
09:24These are called
09:25Disney attraction posters.
09:27Alice, that's actually from 1959.
09:30Alice's floats around
09:31anywhere between
09:32$5,000 or $6,000.
09:35Let's go to your office.
09:36Okay.
09:37Oh, look at this.
09:37So get another room.
09:38Wow.
09:39What about these dolls up here?
09:42That nightmare piece
09:43is very sought after.
09:44Nightmare for Christmas,
09:45so popular,
09:46still resonates
09:47with the older
09:47and the younger fans.
09:48That's definitely
09:49a $300 piece.
09:52The Alice looks like
09:53one of the ones
09:54from, like,
09:54the early Disney Anna shows.
09:56Yeah, they only made
09:5725 of those.
09:57Oh, so she's got to be
09:59at least a $500 plus,
10:01you know,
10:01figurine there.
10:03There's, like,
10:04thousands of dollars
10:05worth of stuff
10:05that we could sell.
10:06What are the avenues
10:07to move some of the stuff?
10:08Online auctions
10:09would do very well,
10:10and I think the fans
10:11would really enjoy
10:12seeing why these pieces
10:14are in such great shape
10:15is because you guys
10:16have meticulously kept them
10:17so nice,
10:18and that actually goes
10:19a long way
10:19with Disney fans.
10:20I think we have
10:22some decisions to make
10:23to make room
10:23for living
10:24for this little angel.
10:27I hope he returns
10:28the favor and goes,
10:29this guy's really trying.
10:30I need to meet him halfway.
10:32There has to be
10:32some kind of compromise,
10:33you know?
10:35All right, Rob.
10:36Let's walk you out.
10:37All righty.
10:37Thank you so much.
10:40So it's decision time.
10:42The big upgrade
10:43is going to be in the office,
10:45the built-in in there.
10:47I want to do this reno,
10:49but the office,
10:51freestanding curios are okay.
10:53Only because guests
10:54aren't going to see
10:55that very often.
10:56This is your home.
10:57Yeah.
10:59And at the end of the day,
11:00it is your decision, okay?
11:01So your budget,
11:02it will actually come down
11:03to about $8,000,
11:04and there's still time
11:05to change your mind
11:06if you want to later.
11:07All right, so next steps.
11:09I'm going to start
11:09swinging hammers,
11:10and you've got a little bit
11:11more to think about
11:11of what to get rid of,
11:12and then, you know,
11:14hopefully we're moving on up,
11:16and Roger's moving back in.
11:18Got it.
11:20All right, I'm on it.
11:21Okay.
11:22This isn't just about
11:23funding some renovations.
11:25It's about fixing
11:26his relationship,
11:26and it's about making space
11:28for his partner.
11:30Patrick needs to go
11:30a little further
11:31and get rid of more,
11:33showing Roger
11:33how important he is.
11:37This is my very first auction.
11:46I can't even believe
11:47that I've got my stuff
11:48in the hands of an auctioneer.
11:50We're going to auction my things
11:51for the first time today,
11:52and we're going to try
11:52to make enough
11:53to pay for these renovations.
11:55Right now,
11:56all of our stuff
11:56is in storage.
11:58The place is under
11:59heavy construction.
12:02I'm so proud of you
12:03taking these steps.
12:04We're going to sell
12:05some of your prized
12:07possessions today.
12:08Yeah, and that's
12:09a little unnerving.
12:10These renovations cost
12:11about $8,000 more,
12:13so I need to make that
12:13my baseline
12:14for how much we earned today.
12:16Whatever you brought today,
12:17you're ready to let go of it.
12:21What worries me
12:22is not so much
12:24being able to let go,
12:26because I think
12:26I can start to do that,
12:27but making sure
12:28that I recoup my investment.
12:30Oh, boy.
12:31Oh, no.
12:32Oh, no.
12:34Thank you, honey.
12:41Thank you all for coming.
12:42We're very happy
12:43to bring a great collection
12:45of Disney items
12:46to you today.
12:47So we're going to start
12:48off the bidding
12:48with Nightmare Before Christmas
12:50Big Fig, very rare,
12:51and we're going to start
12:52the bidding off
12:53at $2.50 on the item.
12:55Do I have $2.50 for the bid?
12:57Do I have $2.50 from anybody?
12:59Anybody in?
13:01I've got $2.50 there.
13:03$300.
13:04Looking for $400.
13:05I got $400 with the lady.
13:06$600 I've got there.
13:08Wow, that's great.
13:08$600, thank you.
13:10I've got $6.50.
13:11I'm going once.
13:12I'm going twice.
13:14Let's sell it.
13:15$6.50 to you.
13:17What was amazing
13:18is watching that people
13:19actually have interest
13:20in your stuff.
13:21It takes you out
13:21of that isolation,
13:23and it makes you realize
13:24that others enjoy
13:25the same things
13:25that you do.
13:26Disney Classics Collection
13:28limited edition
13:29hand-painted bisque.
13:31I have $50.
13:33Yes, thank you, sir.
13:34I have $75,
13:34but I've got $100 there.
13:36I've got $200
13:37with the gentleman up front.
13:38Now I need $225.
13:39Going once,
13:40going twice.
13:41$200.
13:43This is Figaro
13:44from Disney Pinocchio.
13:48Let's sell it
13:49for $400.
13:51The 1980 Small World
13:53Howlin' Wooden Clock.
13:56$300 with the lady there.
13:58Thank you very much.
14:00The Donald Duck Knickerbocker
14:02reproduction of an item
14:03from the 1940s.
14:05I've got $450 there,
14:07and we're going to sell it
14:08for $450 to lucky number seven
14:10over there.
14:11Yay.
14:12An original 1958
14:13Alice in Wonderland
14:15attraction poster.
14:16At this point,
14:17I need the final piece,
14:18which is my poster to sell
14:20to hit my goal
14:20on this renovation.
14:21We're going to be starting
14:22the bidding for this piece
14:23at $1,000.
14:25I've got many people
14:26interested in the poster.
14:27$2,500, $3,000.
14:29I've got $3,000
14:30with the gentleman here.
14:30I've got $3,500
14:31with the lady here.
14:32I've got it with you.
14:33$4,500.
14:35Sold for $4,500.
14:38We're now up to $6,500,
14:40so we only have to make
14:41$1,500 to hit my goal
14:43on these renovations.
14:50Look at the floors.
14:51I mean, aren't you glad?
14:53Oh, God.
14:54Not only does the space
14:56feel so much bigger,
14:57I mean, and it actually
14:59is quite large,
15:00but it's all cohesive now.
15:02It's unified.
15:02Yes.
15:03I hear you've had
15:04a productive week
15:04as well, though.
15:05Sure have.
15:06Okay.
15:06I sold one big pinball machine,
15:08and I also went
15:09to this auction house,
15:10and we actually came away
15:12with $6,500 already,
15:14right?
15:14Have not even...
15:15Good job.
15:15We're at a surplus.
15:17What are we even doing?
15:17How do I get to spend it, Daddy?
15:19How do I get to spend it?
15:20What's your thought?
15:21Um, I mean,
15:22that extra $1,500
15:23gives me all kinds of ideas
15:25to enhance your space
15:26even more.
15:27Here, I know we had talked
15:28about kind of doing
15:29like a custom display shelf.
15:31I would love to try
15:33to do something
15:33a little Disney-themed,
15:34like that could be
15:35your Disney corner,
15:36like maybe...
15:37I don't want to spoil it,
15:38yeah, but I have some ideas.
15:39Okay.
15:39And then the office.
15:41Shall we walk in there?
15:42Sure, sure.
15:42In here,
15:43you were a little reluctant
15:44to do this
15:45because this is a pretty pricey,
15:46this is one of the most
15:47pricey things in the house
15:47because it is custom.
15:48Between the Disney corner
15:50in the living room
15:50and the built-ins
15:51in the office,
15:52we're just three grand.
15:53Short, I've seen
15:53both of those things happen.
15:55I'm motivated now.
15:57Okay, I have to get
15:57that money then.
15:58Okay.
15:58Just make it happen.
15:59I believe in you
16:00because you already found plenty.
16:02What's happened so far
16:03is kind of like
16:03the little tease, right?
16:05Look what you can do
16:06if you're willing to change,
16:07and it's contagious,
16:08and it makes you
16:09want to keep going.
16:11We're taking all these pictures
16:14of my collection.
16:15We're going to be listing them.
16:16The items that I'm listing
16:17are kind of a combination
16:18of things that I thought
16:19I would never get rid of.
16:21I am so happy
16:22selling them this stuff,
16:23and he's getting stuff done.
16:25I think to get rid of things
16:26that I never thought I would,
16:27I'm actually making
16:28personal progress.
16:29Next, we got Cindy here.
16:32Oh.
16:32I want to make some more money
16:34so that I can have
16:35some more built-ins
16:36in this place.
16:37So to do that,
16:38I'm going to have to sell
16:38some more stuff.
16:39And I'm hoping to make $3,000
16:41or at least get close to it.
16:45Since our last visit together,
16:47I was able to sell
16:48more than $3,000 worth
16:49of my collection.
16:51And yes, ladies and gentlemen,
16:52Patrick does keep boxes
16:54for all of his collectibles.
16:57And that means
16:57I'm going to get
16:58Bobby's built-ins
16:59in the office
17:00and the custom cabinet
17:02in the living room.
17:04I could not be more excited
17:06to show Patrick and Roger
17:07their new space.
17:08He sold via online auction.
17:10He sold auctions in person.
17:12Almost everything is done.
17:13There's just a few more things
17:14I need to zhuzh.
17:15A few more figurines
17:16to put behind glass.
17:18But other than that,
17:19we're ready to go.
17:21We're about to walk in the condo
17:22for the first time
17:23seeing it done.
17:25So much anticipation.
17:28Are you ready, Freddie?
17:29Oh my.
17:32No way.
17:36Oh, I think it's
17:39Roger approved.
17:40Wait, is this our house?
17:42It is.
17:43As you know,
17:44we started out
17:45with a lot of stuff in here.
17:48Now, there's a place to live.
17:50There's a place to enjoy the stuff.
17:52There's even these cute little
17:54it's a small world moments
17:55I had custom built for you.
17:57Oh my God.
17:58I wanted this to be
17:59your Disney corner.
18:00All these little nooks,
18:02like the front of the
18:02small world ride.
18:03Yes, how did you know?
18:05I loved that.
18:05I just had a guess.
18:08I had a guess
18:09you would like that.
18:11We have this huge display here
18:13that's all lit up
18:13because the way they are right now,
18:15like, I think this is
18:15half as full as it could be.
18:17You couldn't see anything before
18:18and now you could actually
18:19identify what's in here.
18:21You've got a nice big sofa now
18:22that you guys can both
18:24lay out on.
18:24This is your throne.
18:26We had, what,
18:26six pinball machines before?
18:28Now we have one.
18:31And I think it's great.
18:32The color goes great in here.
18:34Most importantly,
18:35it is one.
18:36One, exactly.
18:37It is now a piece of art
18:39instead of,
18:40dare I say,
18:40a hoarder situation.
18:41I love how this table
18:42goes with the Crescenza.
18:44When you coordinate
18:45things like that,
18:45like everything doesn't
18:46have to be matchy-matchy.
18:47The curio cabinets
18:48are dark espresso wood,
18:50but when you do things
18:51like having the dark
18:51curio cabinet over there
18:52and the dark curio cabinet
18:53over there,
18:53it makes us feel like
18:54one big larger space
18:56instead of breaking it up.
18:57Yeah, I love it.
18:58It's a whole new place.
18:59All right.
19:00So we love the living room
19:01and dining room.
19:02Shall we see the office now?
19:03There's more?
19:04All right.
19:05Let's see what we got.
19:05All right.
19:06We got to make a pit stop first.
19:07This is now
19:09one of my favorite places
19:11in the house.
19:12What?
19:18Oh.
19:19You're getting teary-eyed.
19:20What's going on?
19:22When I was younger,
19:23every holiday,
19:23my cousins would come over
19:24and we would put on puppet shows
19:26for the family
19:27and having this
19:28in my own home now
19:29is so reminiscent
19:30of when we used
19:31to put on shows.
19:32This is spectacular.
19:35Now,
19:36your workspace,
19:38so the chaos in here
19:39was beyond before.
19:44Oh.
19:44It's beautiful.
19:46This is going to make
19:46your days working
19:48so much more zen
19:49and you no longer
19:51have to put up
19:51a virtual background.
19:52I want to show
19:53that background.
19:54This is very Mad Men,
19:56you know?
19:57Right?
19:57Right?
19:59Wow.
20:00You had mounds
20:01and mounds of things.
20:02Now we've got
20:03the beautiful built-in
20:04floor to ceiling
20:05and on top of that,
20:06not only do you have display,
20:07you have an entire row
20:08of storage.
20:09Which I never had in here.
20:11So now things
20:11that you don't want out
20:13can be down there.
20:14This is stunning.
20:15So Patrick sold
20:16a lot of collectibles
20:18to pay for all these upgrades
20:19and I'm really,
20:21really proud of them.
20:22To see that they loved it so much,
20:23money well spent.
20:25And we did it.
20:26You did it.
20:27You guys did it together.
20:28We did.
20:29I'm very proud of you.
20:29How does it feel
20:30to finally let go
20:32of some things?
20:32Knowing that they're
20:33going to new collectors
20:34is almost just as good
20:36as having it
20:36on my own shelf.
20:37I was only going
20:38to move back in
20:39if there was enough
20:40space for both of us.
20:45I definitely see that.
20:47Yeah.
20:47I think I'm going
20:48to move back in.
20:50Either.
20:51If you let me.
20:53I think so.
20:54Okay.
20:55I mean,
20:55that sectional
20:58has room for two,
20:59doesn't it?
20:59Yes.
21:00I think it's time
21:01for me to say goodbye
21:02and for you
21:02to join your home
21:03together as a couple,
21:05which I'm going
21:05to add therapists
21:07to my resume now,
21:08I think.
21:08That's fair.
21:10That's fair.
21:11Thank you, guys.
21:12Thank you, Bobby.
21:15Bye.
21:16Bye.
21:16Bye.
