00:00Hello. Thank you for watching today. Today's topic is "Energetic energy."
00:20The film, Ganbare Genki Desu, tells the story of a boy who strives every day to achieve his dream of becoming a world champion, something his late father, a boxer, never achieved, through boxing.
00:40Ganbare Genki was originally written by Yu Koyama and aired for a total of 35 episodes between 1980 and 1981.
00:53The story begins with a father and boy driving together along a country road.
00:59A festival was being held that day, and his father, boxer Hideki Horiguchi, or Shark Horiguchi as he goes by, was in town with his only son, Genki, to help with the festival entertainment.
01:14So Genki borrows the equipment from the Chindonya restaurant without permission and advertises his entertainment on a busy main street.
01:21For the entertainment, pairs of amateurs would step into the ring and if they could land a punch on Shark Horiguchi, they would win a prize of 1,000 yen, and if they could knock him down, they would apply for a prize of 100,000 yen.
01:36That night, as the entertainment begins, challengers enter the ring one after another, but as they leave the ring without even being able to fight, a thug-like challenger enters the ring.
01:48One of the challengers has boxing experience and ends his entertainment part-time job by taking down to avoid a fight.
01:58Later, Genki, still angry, picks a fight with the thugs, so my father has no choice but to brush them off, and the next day the two of them head off to Tokyo.
02:10In Tokyo, while his father waited for his opponent to be decided, Genki became famous overnight at a boxing tournament sponsored by a television station.
02:21Also, some time later, when Genki's grandparents come to visit, he learns the truth about his father and grandparents, but Genki protects his father, who is left speechless when he is blamed for his mother.
02:33In the midst of this, it was decided that my father would face Kenji Seki, a young boxer with both physical and mental energy, and he devoted himself to training.
02:43On the day of the match, Seki was fighting his father, Shark Horiguchi, with a completely contemptuous attitude, and Seki began to panic under Shark Horiguchi's fierce attack. After a fierce exchange of blows, Shark Horiguchi was knocked out of the ring by Seki's punch.
03:02Even so, he returned to the ring in a daze, but ran out of strength and was knocked out.
03:10After the game, Shiki's father, realizing his true colors, goes to an amusement park with Genki and enjoys a fun time, but while resting on a bench, he passes away while sitting there.
03:22Also, under his father's protection, Genki is taken in by his grandparents, but he never forgets boxing and devotes himself to boxing, aiming to fulfill his father's dream of becoming a world champion.
03:33Now, let me introduce the main characters.
03:39Genki Horiguchi is the main character of this work. Having lost his mother at birth, he spent his childhood moving around the country with his father working in the tacky travelling industry.
03:52After his father's death, he was taken in by his wealthy grandparents and grew up without any hardships, but he continued to dream of becoming a boxer, and after graduating from junior high school, instead of going on to high school, he moved to Tokyo and pursued a career as a professional boxer.
04:07Although he possesses exceptional boxing sense and punching power, his gentle nature initially led people to believe he was not suited to being a boxer. However, his wild fighting instincts were awakened, and he defeated rivals one after another, eventually rising to the point where he faced his arch-rival, Kenji Seki, for the world championship.
04:29Hideki Horiguchi is Genki's father and an unsuccessful professional boxer who goes by the ring name Shark Horiguchi.
04:36After Genki's mother passed away, he stopped boxing for a while, but when Genki was old enough to understand things, he started boxing again.
04:48However, after his fight with Seki Kenji, he passed away due to excessive weight loss and the unknown date of the fight, but even after his death, he had a great influence on Seki and his spirit.
05:01Ashikawa Yuko is the heroine of this work and Genki's homeroom teacher at elementary school.
05:11She is very similar to Genki's mother, and after Genki's situation, she quit her job as a teacher and became an office lady, and she watched over Genki as his guarantor and provided him with emotional support.
05:22She was the lover of Mishima, Genki's boxing coach, and after Mishima's death, she was confused by Genki's confession and left a letter for Genki before traveling abroad to sort out her feelings.
05:34Kenji Seki is a professional featherweight boxer, a genius boxer who attracted attention for his unbeatable strength after his professional debut.
05:46Although he was very conceited, after his arrogance was crushed in a match against Genki's father, he devoted himself to boxing seriously and became a world champion at the age of 19.
05:59After that, he remained undefeated against Keio for 14 years, and now faced Genki, who had become a professional while still a champion.
06:11Eiji Mishima is a member of Maruyama Boxing Gym and becomes Genki's coach during his junior high school years.
06:18He was Ashikawa Yuko's boyfriend and the All-Japan Student Champion, but after turning professional, he was defeated by Seki Kenji, which led to him becoming a bodyguard for the Yakuza and even getting a tattoo of Acala on his back.
06:34He was briefly imprisoned, but after his release he tried to restart his life as a Genki trainer, but he faced a tragic fate.
06:48Tanuma Takasaburo and Aiko were wealthy people who lived in a large mansion, and they became Genki's maternal grandparents.
06:56Although he hated Genki's father for taking away his beloved only daughter, he also loved Genki dearly, and was his guardian angel, taking Genki in and raising him with care.
07:06At first, he disliked boxing, but after understanding Genki's desire, he agreed to Genki's boxing and also allowed him to move to Tokyo after graduating from junior high school and become a professional boxer.
07:20Takeshi Hiyama is one year older than Genki and was his boxing rival in elementary and junior high school.
07:32Although he grew up in a poor family, he entered high school as an overachiever and became a student champion.
07:40However, after being humiliated by being knocked down during a public sparring match with Genki, he dropped out of high school and turned professional, but unfortunately, he retired due to a decline in his eyesight.
07:56Ishida Tomoko was a classmate from junior high school, and he had a strong crush on her and made a strong advance on her.
08:02After graduating from junior high school, he had an argument with his father over a letter from Genki, and then moved to Tokyo to manage Genki.
08:13After moving to Tokyo, she made her debut as an idol singer and became popular, but she was unable to fit in to the industry and retired soon after. After that, she began performing as a piano singer at a music tea salon.
08:25Okamura Shuichi was also a classmate in junior high school, and was the best dialect speaker in the school, but he also felt inferior because he had nothing to do but study.
08:39He disliked Genki, who was a stark contrast to him, but after a fight with Genki, any resentment was cleared up, and from then on he began to support Genki as his best friend.
08:51Katsuzo Yamatani is a flyweight boxer who belongs to Maruyama Boxing Gym.
09:00His main job was as a clerk at a dry cleaner's that also visited Genki's parents' house, but even after switching to a professional job, he retired after five years without making any real value.
09:10After retiring, she gave birth to a baby boy, and both parents cheered him on.
09:15As an aside, this film depicts Genki's journey to Tokyo to become a professional boxer.
09:26In the original story, the story continues from there, with Genki becoming a professional boxer, defeating strong opponents one after another, and then at the end of the story, facing off against Seki Kenji in a title match.
09:40In the title bout, after an incredibly fierce battle, Genki won by KO in the 12th round, and has now won all 14 of his fights since his debut, becoming the unified WBC and WBA featherweight champion.
09:56However, despite becoming champion, he did not defend the title, instead relinquishing it and retiring. Meanwhile, Ashikawa Sensei left, and the sport entered a new phase.
10:07With a mixture of joy and sadness, Genki decides to take on the name Tanuma Sei and go on to high school, and the performance ends with him running back to his grandparents' house, a place he longs to visit.
10:24Also, before this work was aired on television, a radio drama starring Hiromi Go as Genki was broadcast on Nippon Broadcasting's All Night Japan in 1977.
10:38Furthermore, in the same year, to commemorate the founding of Shonen Sunday, a stage production was held in which Tagawa Yosuke played the role of Genki.
10:47In addition, a DVD box set was released in 2004 and a Blu-ray was released in 2021.
10:56Well, it's finally the final episode. The final episode will be the bottom from the previous episode.
11:06Mishima, who was like a boxing mentor to Genki, was hospitalized, and after a few weeks, one day, without Genki and the others knowing, Mishima was released from the hospital and returned to Maruyama Gym.
11:20Seeing Genki's joy, Mishima seems to be delighted, and even though he has just recovered from an illness, he spars with Genki, but collapses in the ring after a while.
11:32However, Mishima somehow managed to stand up, looked at Genki, and for some reason was crying. Seeing this, Genki just stood there in shock, unable to do anything.
11:46Mishima then cheerfully approaches her and hugs her, but collapses again and is immediately taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
11:55After being transported, while treatment continued at the hospital, Dr. Ashikawa, who had rushed over saying Genki, sat in a chair in front of the treatment room and seemed to be in a daze.
12:09Then, when the doctor comes out of the treatment room and tells Genki that Mishima's death is imminent, Genki blames himself for sparring with Mishima, who has just recovered from an illness.
12:20However, Genki regains his composure and begins shadowboxing next to Mishima, who is writhing in pain. For a moment, Mishima regains his composure, as if the pain has disappeared. However, after a while, he quietly passes away.
12:40Seeing this scene, Genki runs out of the hospital and just keeps running in the rain, and before he knows it, he has arrived at an unfamiliar train station.
12:50Genki was lost in thought for a while, but when he returned to the hospital, he happened to witness Yamatani's wife, who was hospitalized at the same hospital, giving birth.
13:03When Genki sees the newborn baby boy, he feels a moment of relief from the depths of grief.
13:10Then, a few years later, in the spring, Genki, who was about to graduate from junior high school and had already decided on the high school he would attend, visited Mr. Ashikawa, only to find that Mr. Ashikawa had thrown the letter from Mishima into the fire.
13:26Genki feels that this act is a ritual that marks the first step in forgetting the late Mishima and starting a new life.
13:37In addition, as I was undecided about whether to go to high school or become a professional boxer, her decision seemed like something that could happen to me.
13:47That evening, while having dinner with his grandparents, his grandfather tells him stories from his youth and then encourages Genki to live the life he wants, thereby approving his path to becoming a professional boxer.
14:03Genki is surprised by his grandfather's unexpected words, but in order to repay his grandparents' kindness, he decides to become a professional boxer, a promise he had made to his father since childhood.
14:14The next morning, Genki's grandparents notice him and cry silently in bed, trying to contain their grief, while Genki removes his nameplate and makes the house an ad.
14:28After arriving in Tokyo, Genki stopped by places that hold fond memories for his father, such as the Kyokakuen Hall and an amusement park, before staying at the cheap Minato Inn where he had stayed with his father.
14:40A few days later, Genki is watching Seki Kenji's title match and witnesses Seki's victory over Keio. At the same time, he locks eyes with Seki, and the program ends with a scene that foreshadows a title match between himself and Seki.
15:00Now, let's take a look at Genki's performance.
