A mother and her two young children died in a house fire that destroyed their home in the early hours of Boxing Day despite the efforts of her husband to save his family, police said.Emergency services were called to a property on Brimscombe Hill, near Stroud, Gloucestershire, at about 3am.Gloucestershire Police said the father, who survived the blaze, was a serving officer with the force.Statement by Det Supt Ian Fletcher, Gloucestershire Constabulary.

00:00Sadly, early hours of Boxing Day at about 3am, emergency services were called to an address
00:05on Brimscombe Hill to a fire that has started in a mid-terrace property. Emergency services
00:12have attended that vicinity. It's a well-established fire. The circumstances, as we understand
00:20at this time, is that it was a family property with the father and mother in that property
00:26with two children. The fire has woken the mother and father at about 3am. They have attempted
00:33to get to their children in the back bedroom of that property. They've been unable to get
00:38to the back bedroom due to the veracity of that fire and the heat from that fire. The
00:43father has smashed his way out of the house through a bathroom window in order to try to
00:48access the child's bedroom via the outside. He's been unable to enter the property via
00:54that bedroom window. He's then tried to re-enter the property through the bathroom window by
00:59which stage the fire has taken hold in the bathroom and he's unable to get back into the
01:04upstairs bedrooms. He's subsequently gone downstairs and tried to force entry via the front and the
01:09back door but has been unable to get back inside of the property and it's at this point
01:15our colleagues from emergency services, fire police etc have attended and have started managing
01:19and dealing with that fire.
