00:00I lost one night, 1.37 million.
00:05My parents never make this kind of money for all their life.
00:09And then you have the day that I won 1.78 million in eight hours.
00:14And then you leave this place and you think, nobody can touch you.
00:17You are the best pro poker player in the world.
00:23Bobby Baldwin is trying to decide what he's going to do.
00:26And let's see, there may, uh-oh, he is also going to make a big raise here.
00:31$86,000 raise he has in the hole, a pair of nines.
00:36The big game started well before all of our times.
00:40I believe it started at the Golden Nugget.
00:43Vegas has obviously changed a lot in the last 40 years.
00:46But the game moved to the Mirage.
00:48That was the office, that's literally what they called the Mirage.
00:51And then they knocked down the dunes, they built the Bellagio,
00:54and that became the new office, Bobby's Room.
00:58Do you remember the first time you played in Bobby's Room?
01:00I do remember the first time I played in Bobby's Room.
01:02I was 21 and it was, uh, it was quite an experience.
01:06You know, whoa, I mean, uh...
01:08It's a very interesting place.
01:10You really have a collection of talented players,
01:13degenerate gamblers, chiseled old veterans.
01:16You have new guys.
01:17You have guys like me that are sort of in the middle, I guess, at this point.
01:20But one thing that all these people have in common is some desire to play stakes like this.
01:26I mean, the money that we transfer over there is just scary.
01:30It's a tough game.
01:31The swings are ridiculous and people win and lose a lot of money.
01:34The games are open to everybody who can afford to play at those stakes.
01:38So, it doesn't matter who you are, you can play.
01:40A guy walked in, he got like Middle Eastern look and he's shaking.
01:45He got chips in his pocket and he's playing with them.
01:47And he said, oh, oh, Doyle Bronstone.
01:50Oh, I see you on TV, I see you.
01:52So, we're looking and he said, hello, how are you?
01:55You know, we're trying to be...
01:56He said, good, I want to play with you.
01:58Those chips that he's playing with is $100,000 cheap.
02:00He has 17 of them.
02:01Two and a half hours later, he left with nothing.
02:04Only because he wanted to play with us.
02:07He was one of those chic, you know, from Saudi Arabia or whatever.
02:11How do you deal with the emotional turmoil of those stakes?
02:15That's a good question.
02:17The way I handle big swings is I don't let myself have big swings.
02:22I hurt when I lose 50 cents and that's...
02:25It's my job and it's what I do now for a long time.
02:29So, you learn how to cope with it.
02:31I have an ongoing joke with Phil Hellmuth when he has a tirade
02:35and he screams and cries and rolls on the floor.
02:37You have a lot of useful stuff to say, don't you?
02:39And I say, Phil, nobody understands but you and me.
02:41And that's kind of serious.
02:43I'm pretty freaking upset too when I lose.
02:45I don't think anybody in that situation can be robotic.
02:48We try, but, you know, we're human.
02:51So, Bobby's room, you know, there's a lot of stuff happened in there that, you know...
02:58I was in a pot one time where there was a fight at the table
03:02which involved someone's stack getting slid into the pot.
03:06Chips were everywhere going in everybody's stack, you know,
03:09we're in the middle of this pot.
03:10Like, I wanted to tell the guy, like, listen, pal, I got a straight flush.
03:13You know, it's just like, do I have to wear the poker face for an hour here?
03:16I mean, it's like...
03:17I wound up winning the pot.
03:18It took 45 minutes for everybody to stack their chips up, but then, you know...
03:23But on the other hand, everybody's, you know, good friends.
03:29So, I remember, like, I think the New Yorker was doing an article on Bobby's room
03:33and he actually pulled me aside and said,
03:35are you guys playing for real money?
03:37Because everybody was laughing and having fun
03:40and, like, it didn't seem like anybody was taking anything seriously.
03:44I went broke and left the game.
03:47He came outside without me saying anything
03:50and he had what we call a flag chip.
03:53It's a $5,000 chip.
03:54He said, looks like you can use this for now.
03:58So, you're not asking.
04:00So, that happens more often in poker world than you can possibly imagine.
04:05One flag chip?
04:07Was it more?
04:09Anyone that plays with each other all the time,
04:11even if you don't really like them, you know,
04:13you see them and it's, like, it's just all love
04:15because it's, like, we do the same stuff all the time together,
04:18you know, and it's a bond.
04:20It's a deep bond.
04:23We all chose this.
04:24We know what stakes we're playing.
04:26We know the kind of personalities that enter this room
04:28and there's going to be some shrewd, ruthless, calculated,
04:31cold-blooded decision-making in there
04:33and there's also going to be some very warm feelings,
04:35some great times and the whole thing rolls into one.
04:38Please come back to one.
04:39Please come back to one and see you there in the morning.
04:45Tell his wife, you know,
04:46and there's a big, big battle like that.
04:48And I've already seen this as this.
04:50One to two.
04:51Let me see you there in the morning.
04:52Take the next one.
04:53Bye, everyone.
04:54Okay, see you there in the morning.
04:55Bye, everyone.
04:56Bye.
04:57Take, bye.
04:58Bye, everyone.
04:59Bye.
05:00Bye.
05:01Bye, everyone.
05:02Bye, everyone.
05:03Bye.
