00:00The future of deep-sea mining is soon to be determined.
00:04The International Seabed Authority, who regulates seabed activities,
00:08is set to meet in July to determine whether the deep-sea mining industry will launch.
00:13In Ottawa, Greenpeace activists and staff created a 48-by-30-foot octopus light installation
00:19to urge Minister Melanie Jolie to say no to deep-sea mining in international waters.
00:25Greenpeace created a representation of a ghost octopus,
00:29a species that lives in the deep sea and lays its eggs on mineral deposits on the seabed.
00:35According to the press release, the ghost octopus is one of the many species at risk from deep-sea mining.
00:42Other Greenpeace activists around the world have joined protests against deep-sea mining.
00:47The Guardian reported that over 5,000 undiscovered species living on the seabed
00:52in an untouched area of the Pacific Ocean,
00:54identified as a future hotspot for deep-sea mining,
00:58will face irreparable harm.
01:00Fourteen states have taken positions against deep-sea mining in international waters.
01:05The next round of talks will take place July 10th to the 28th in Jamaica
01:09at the International Seabed Authority.
