00:01Winter's setting in and what a year it's been.
00:04Come on Fletchers.
00:06As we've reached our fourth year in farming.
00:12We've fallen for this way of life, hook, line and sinker.
00:16Oh, can we keep this?
00:19Right, Milo, let's get some jobs done.
00:22Farming's a breeze compared to having four kids.
00:26We're surrounded by the spectacular Peak District.
00:31As far as an office goes, it's pretty good, isn't it?
00:36But farming can be a bumpy ride.
00:39And this year we've had some big challenges.
00:42That looks like where the fire has started.
00:45It's going to be a big job to fix, isn't it?
00:48Yeah.
00:49Like, everything.
00:51And although things are moving in the right direction...
00:54Back at the farm.
00:56Living in a caravan.
00:58We feel a breakaway to a winter wonderland is just what's needed.
01:03We're in Austria.
01:05Can you believe it?
01:07Look how lots of mountains there are.
01:10To experience life on an alpine farm.
01:14Oh, they are hungry.
01:16The bells are chiming.
01:18It's a dream come true, really.
01:20And make lots of magical memories along the way.
01:23Oh, that was a good one.
01:27Oh!
01:32Kelvin!
01:33We're up even earlier than our cockerel.
01:46Well, it's 5am.
01:48And Max has gone to sleep.
01:52But the kids can't wait.
01:55And Marn is so excited, she's going behind the camera to film our trip.
02:03Go on, Dad.
02:05So we're all going to...
02:07Austria.
02:08Well, now's the holiday starting?
02:09It's been busy.
02:10I'm ready for the winter, guys.
02:11I've got my coat.
02:12Wait!
02:13So we're nearly getting on the plane.
02:14Gate 11.
02:15Gate 11.
02:16It's going to be silly, it's a little silly.
02:17That's our plane.
02:18That's our plane.
02:20So we're nearly getting on the plane.
02:22Gate 11.
02:23It's going to be silly.
02:25It's a little silly.
02:26It's a little silly.
02:27It's going off here.
02:28That's our plane.
02:29Just landed.
02:30Austria.
02:31Go Austria!
02:35Just landed.
02:41Austria.
02:42Mattias, how'd you feel?
02:55Mattias, how'd you feel?
03:12From its soaring peaks to chocolate box villages, this place was made for an adventure.
03:19We'll be staying in the heart of Tyrol, where traditions run deep and the scenery is nothing short of spectacular.
03:27But before we head to our farm stay, we're taking the kids straight up one of the region's magnificent mountains.
03:34The journey's been a lot for our three-year-old twins Maximus and Mattias,
03:39so while they have a rest, we've got a surprise for Marnie and Milo.
03:44Are you ready?
03:45Mm-hmm.
03:46Yeah.
03:47You see that mountain up there? We're gonna go there. We're gonna go to the top.
03:51Yeah.
03:52Yeah, the highest mountain you can see, we're gonna go to the top off.
03:54Right, how are we gonna get to the top of the mountain?
03:58We would use these, like, thingy particles where they come on a zip climb and then you've got to sit in these carriages,
04:06kind of like the box.
04:08Okay, do you know what they're called?
04:10Not a clue.
04:11Cable car.
04:12Cable car!
04:13Yeah.
04:14Around 60% of Austria is mountainous terrain.
04:18We're heading up the Hintertux Glacier, which at its highest point reaches a height of 3,250 metres.
04:26Line your marks.
04:27Get set.
04:28Go!
04:29Go!
04:30Oh!
04:31Oh!
04:32Wow!
04:33Wow!
04:34This is like we're on a plane.
04:35It is.
04:36Back home, the picnic should take some beating, but I'm afraid to say it's beat.
04:46That view is unbelievable.
04:48Look at that.
04:49Look at that.
04:50I've never been up this height.
04:51Look at how much mountains there are.
04:54Are you ready?
04:55One, two, three.
04:56Snow!
04:57Snow!
04:58Look down.
04:59It's...
05:00How have they built these?
05:05Look at that.
05:06It's gorgeous.
05:07Above the clouds, the Alps look like something out of a movie.
05:14But the fun doesn't stop at the summit.
05:16When we reach the top, we're going down inside the glacier itself.
05:20A perfect way to launch this alpine adventure.
05:23Three, two, one, fly!
05:24Play!
05:25Of course, on the way, Marnie and Milo can't resist a play in the snow and I can't blame
05:50them.
05:51How good's that?
05:52Just a pile of snow.
05:53Already having loads of fun.
05:54Come on, we've got mountains to go up.
05:55Come on, Milo!
05:56Come on, Milo!
06:07I'm out of breath now.
06:09I can't wait to see what's in there.
06:12Milo's first, the explorer.
06:14This glacier is a huge two and a half miles long.
06:18And beneath its surface, we're delving into its natural history.
06:23Welcome to the ice palace.
06:25I'm Simon.
06:26I'll be taking you around today.
06:27So in here, it's zero degrees Celsius all over here.
06:30Like a big fridge.
06:31Like a big fridge, yeah.
06:32Yeah, the ice controls the temperature and keeps it pretty much bang on zero.
06:37How did the case go here?
06:38Did they get curved?
06:40Yes.
06:41So we mostly follow natural cracks.
06:43The ice is a big heavy lump of ice, it moves, it squashes down, it forms little cracks.
06:49We've then made them a bit wider, made them a bit higher so we can get through.
06:52But they always follow mostly something natural.
06:55How deep is it?
06:57The ice is in the middle, around about 60 to 70 metres thick.
07:01Wow.
07:02You lead the way, Milo.
07:04Look at those icicles.
07:06It's like you're in another world.
07:07Up above this, there are hundreds and hundreds of people skiing.
07:12And here, it's just like our own little world.
07:15It is beautiful.
07:18Very beautiful.
07:20Each step into the ice cave brings a new sense of wonder that I've never experienced before.
07:26And as we come to the end of the tour, it's time to take a magical ride through the glaciers' glowing tunnels.
07:34Everybody ready?
07:35Yeah.
07:36Let's go.
07:45Milo has loved every second of it.
07:49This is his kind of thing.
07:51Discovering.
07:52Exploring.
07:53Exploring.
07:54He's desperate to take a piece of this cave home with him.
07:59I'm going to take one of them spiky things.
08:02That couldn't have been timed any better.
08:06The frozen cave has been a real other world experience.
08:09But in order to get out, Marnie and Milo have to get hands on and guide us back.
08:14Give it a big one.
08:15Give it a big one.
08:16Oh.
08:17Give it a big one.
08:18Gonna leave it, Marnie.
08:19We've got a duck.
08:20Yeah, I can just...
08:21Come on guys, get him back.
08:23He's only on you.
08:24We can only get back if you can push us.
08:27We've made it.
08:28You did it.
08:29Yes.
08:30You got us back.
08:31Come on, Captain.
08:33Captain Fletcher.
08:35After a fascinating start to our trip, we make our way back into the alpine sunshine.
08:41Where, post-nap, the twins are enjoying this winter playground.
08:49New monkey.
08:50Come on.
08:53Just making a ball.
08:56Go and roll down that hill.
08:57Who wants to build a snowman?
08:58Me.
08:59Come on, then.
09:00I've already started.
09:01Oh, Marnie's already started.
09:02Come on, Marnie's already started.
09:03With this much snow, Mum, you could probably make a whole house.
09:06Stop eating it.
09:07It's not a sandwich.
09:08It's snow.
09:09No.
09:10Stop eating my snowman.
09:11They're eating it like it's a ham sandwich.
09:12Should I make you a little snowball that you could throw at Mummy?
09:13Yeah.
09:14Right.
09:16Good shot.
09:17Right.
09:18Go and get Mummy with that.
09:19That's a good one.
09:20That's a good one.
09:21Before I know it, I'm the one being used for target practice.
09:22Oh, wait.
09:23Oh, wait.
09:24Oh, my God.
09:25This is not a sandwich.
09:26It's not a sandwich.
09:27It's snow.
09:28It's snow.
09:29No.
09:30Stop eating my snowman.
09:31It's a ham sandwich.
09:32It's snow.
09:33No.
09:34Stop eating my snowman.
09:35They're eating it like it's a ham sandwich.
09:36Should I make you a little snowball that you could throw at Mummy?
09:37Yeah.
09:38Right.
09:39Good shot.
09:40Right.
09:41Go and get Mummy with that.
09:42That's a good one.
09:43Oh, wait.
09:46Ouch.
09:48Oh, that was a good one.
09:51Are you going to say poo-poo?
09:59Give kids all the presents in the world.
10:02But ultimately, give them a pile of mud or a pile of snow and they'll just find loads of fun.
10:08At me.
10:09You want me to throw this at you?
10:10Are you sure?
10:11Yeah.
10:12Right there?
10:13Yeah.
10:19Oh, they just got us with a snowball.
10:25Right, shall we go and get a hot chocolate?
10:29With a temperature just above zero, a hot chocolate is just what's needed to warm us up.
10:35Oh.
10:42Wow.
10:43Look at that view.
10:45That is incredible.
10:48Thank you, Mum.
10:49Thank you, Dad.
10:50You're welcome.
10:51I do like this.
10:52I do like this.
10:53I do like the dramatic backdrop.
10:54The dramatic.
10:56The snow, the sunshine.
10:58Here's to Austria.
10:59Austria.
11:00How do you say Merry Christmas in Austria?
11:03It's a strange.
11:04Fro-Vine-actin.
11:05Fro-Vine-actin.
11:06Fro-Vine-actin.
11:07Well, let's cheers to that.
11:08Fro-Vine-actin.
11:09Fro-Vine-actin.

11:22Proud sponsors of Christmas Entertainment on STV.
11:26We've swapped the Peak District for Austria to have a family getaway after a big year on
11:45our farm.
11:46So first night in Austria.
11:48Can't wait.
11:49It's going to be so exciting.
11:51Max pops these background lights.
11:59They actually spell the name A-U-E-S-T-R-I-U-A-R-O-C.
12:12This is the best hotel I've ever stayed.
12:16Yeah, I just came up, I just came up from there.
12:22Best hotel, best brother and sister.
12:25Tomorrow.
12:36Our day starts in the city of Innsbruck
12:39with its picture postcard buildings
12:41on a backdrop of snow-dusted peaks.
12:44This morning, Liz and the twins are in search of an alpine speciality.
12:49Wait!
12:51Come on, you're just too excited!
12:55Come on!
12:56A Christmas trip to Austria wouldn't be complete
12:59if it didn't include gingerbread.
13:03Look at this!
13:05So they're visiting the Painter Family Bakery
13:08to create a very special thank you gift for our host family.
13:12Laura, we are loving the look of these gingerbreads.
13:15They look so tasty!
13:18Here, three generations of Laura's family
13:20make their most famous festive treat.
13:24That's my grandpa.
13:25He's 94.
13:2794, wow!
13:28Working every day, yeah.
13:29And he's the founder of our gingerbread and, yeah.
13:33Wow.
13:33Where it starts.
13:34Very impressive.
13:35Yeah.
13:35We're honoured.
13:38Yeah!
13:38Thank you for welcoming us into your kitchen.
13:40Thank you!
13:42High five!
13:45Ciao!
13:45Ciao!
13:46Say ciao!
13:47Ciao!
13:47Ciao!
13:48Ciao!
13:48Once they're dressed for the job in hand,
13:51it's time for Maximus and Mateus to get stuck in.
13:56One more.
13:57You want to throw on him?
13:58Yay!
13:59Guys, look at this.
14:00This is wits of eggs.
14:01Where do eggs come from?
14:03From chicken!
14:04Yeah!
14:06Now the dough is ready,
14:07the twins can get creative.
14:09And then push together.
14:10Push together.
14:11Push.
14:12Oh, that's it.
14:13One more time.
14:14Yes, perfect.
14:15A little more.
14:17That's looking very well.
14:19You did a very good job.
14:21Give it a little wiggle.
14:22Yeah, that's it.
14:23And then pull it out.
14:24Yay!
14:25That's perfect, Mateus.
14:27Wow.
14:28Guys, look at all your shapes here.
14:30Wow!
14:31You've done all of them.
14:32Do you want to stand next to it?
14:33And I'll take your picture and give me a thumbs up.
14:36Yay!
14:40After just 15 minutes in the oven, it's decoration time.
14:45I can smell chocolate.
14:48If there's one thing I love, it is chocolate.
14:51Laura's twin brother, Lucas, has volunteered to teach us some decorating techniques.
14:56He's a brave man.
14:56I will show you one.
14:58It looks very cool.
15:02Oh, wow.
15:04Is there a trick or you just squeeze?
15:06Yeah, just a light squeeze.
15:09Yeah, squeeze.
15:09Okay.
15:09I mean, I could do this job all day.
15:17Isn't that enjoyable?
15:19Yeah, very enjoyable.
15:20Mefa, Mateus.
15:21Perfect.
15:22How's that?
15:23Do you want to put some sprinkles on?
15:25That is good.
15:27Thumbs up?
15:27I mean, you've got it all over your face.
15:33Before they all get eaten, it's time to take some boxed-up treats and get on the road.
15:40I can tell they've absolutely loved it.
15:44From one family to another, right?
15:46Yes.
15:47I think they're drunk on chocolate now.
15:49We'll get out of your hair.
15:50We'll see you later.
15:50Bye.
15:51Bye.
15:51Bye.
15:51Bye.
16:04We're now leaving Innsbruck and heading to stay with the Acrena family, who are dairy
16:09and beef farmers in the Alpine region of Tyrone.
16:12Hi, hi.
16:14I am Matthew.
16:15Hi.
16:16Hello.
16:16Milo.
16:17Hello.
16:18Hello.
16:18Hello.
16:19Hello, guys.
16:20Hello.
16:21Joseph.
16:22Joseph, yes.
16:22Kelvin.
16:23Kelvin, nice to meet you.
16:24And you?
16:25This is Mateus.
16:27So, Mateus and Max are twins.
16:30Marnie.
16:31Marnie.
16:31Okay.
16:33Our hosts, Joseph, Martina and their son, Jakob, have agreed to teach us how they farm here
16:38and what traditions they have to celebrate the season.
16:42Beautiful.
16:43Look at this place.
16:44This is amazing.
16:45Wow.
16:45Yeah, our farm owns and arranged in our family since about 14 generations.
16:53Our farm is about 34 hectares big.
16:57We have 14 hectares wood and 20 hectares is green land.
17:01Wow, it's absolutely breathtaking.
17:07Well, the kids have made themselves at home, so should we head in?
17:10Yeah, should we head in?
17:11Yeah.
17:11Let's go in.
17:11Come in, please.
17:12Wow, look at that.
17:24Look at that.
17:24Oh, is that a cowbell?
17:25Is that a cowbell?
17:25Yeah.
17:26I make it.
17:28I don't know.
17:29You stick it.
17:30It's sticked.
17:30Yeah.
17:30I stick it.
17:31For each of the cows for each of the children, she made one.
17:34And this is for the cows and this is for the cows for the face.
17:38Can I ring it?
17:39Yeah.
17:40Yeah.
17:41I mean, it's...
17:42Wait, there's no bell in there.
17:44Oh.
17:45Gosh, it's heavy.
17:46It's loud.
17:47Yeah.
17:48Look at the size of the bell.
17:50That is heavy.
17:51Yeah, well, you must kind of...
17:52Come on.
17:53When they...
17:54When they call goat.
17:55Every time bomb.
17:56I love how much you celebrate your animals.
17:58It's great.
17:59Like us, Yosef and Martina have diversified to provide another income stream and we're staying
18:12in one of their rental apartments.
18:14Look at that.
18:15Wow.
18:16This is the most incredible view I think I've ever seen.
18:21I mean, you go from, like, all the forests and then up to the snow and the mountains in
18:28one view.
18:29It's pretty.
18:30It'd be nice to live here, wouldn't it?
18:32Yeah.
18:33Yeah.
18:34Well, our children are definitely having a good time.
18:35I don't think we're going to be able to take them home.
18:37They're good at farming.
18:38They'll help you.
18:39The view is amazing, so I'm on a swing.
18:40Ah!
18:41I know!
18:42Look how cute these rabbits are.
18:46Can they even fit through that little hole?
18:47Oh, let's see.
18:48They can.
18:49It's the water.
18:50Hello.
18:51Look at all those mountains.
18:52Oh my gosh, this place is incredible.
18:53Oh my gosh, this place is incredible.
18:54Oh my gosh, this place is incredible.
18:55Oh?
18:56Oh my gosh, this place is incredible.
18:57Oh my gosh, this place is incredible.
18:58Oh my gosh, it's awesome.
18:59Ah, it might be a nice ball.
19:00Oh my gosh, it's cool.
19:01And look at all those mountains.
19:02Oh my gosh, this place is incredible.
19:25As we're here to lend a hand, Martina gets the kids straight to work feeding the goats.
19:35Everything they grow here is organic, with enough to not only feed themselves, but their
19:39furry friends too.
19:41We put here some broccoli, broccoli, yeah, it's the last from the garden and now it's
19:52good for the animals.
19:59You can put it here, you take a little bit from the bed and you can give it here.
20:07So, knock your hand, oh they are hungry.
20:18This is Heidi and Honey.
20:25The kids are loving life on the farm and after meeting the goats, it's time to see Yosef's
20:31latest additions.
20:38Oh, look at these little calves!
20:46Look at them!
20:48Oh, wow!
20:49The farm recently welcomed eight newborn calves.
20:54I want to feed that one.
20:55You want to feed that one?
20:56Right, you stand next to that one.
20:57And we've got four volunteers ready to help with the milk feed.
21:03Thank you, Yosef.
21:04I want a milk bucket.
21:05Milk bucket, right.
21:06You're strong.
21:07Two hands.
21:08Two hands, good lad.
21:09Look at them farmer mussels there.
21:10Over there.
21:11Look at them farmer mussels.
21:12Okay, here.
21:13We give this one.
21:14Newborn calves are hand reared.
21:16Whilst the cow continues milking with her herd.
21:17Wow, look at that.
21:18What a lovely calf.
21:19It is a nice calf.
21:20Oh, look.
21:21Feeding time is not something our kids have experienced with our bull calves.
21:23So, we have a nice calf.
21:24Look at them farmer mussels there.
21:25Look at them farmer mussels.
21:26Over there.
21:27Look at them farmer mussels.
21:28Over there.
21:29Look at them farmer mussels.
21:30Okay, here.
21:31We give this one.
21:32Newborn calves are hand reared.
21:33Wow.
21:34Look at that.
21:35What a lovely calf.
21:36It is a nice calf.
21:37Oh, look.
21:38Dad, it's licking.
21:40Feeding time is not something our kids have experienced with our bull calves.
21:45So, this is a real treat for them.
21:48So, these are going to join the milking herd when they get bigger.
21:50Oh, my God.
21:51It's so soft.
21:52Do you want to try, Mateus?
21:54Lick, lick, lick.
21:57Lick, lick, lick.
22:00Look how long his tongue is.
22:02It's just so beautiful and peaceful and just...
22:07You'd never want to leave if you lived here.
22:10Mum, this is like the sound of music.
22:15Don't.
22:16We can't afford the copyright.
22:21Don't be singing it.
22:24You can sing that.
22:27Stop.
22:30Stop.
22:31Stop.
22:32It does have that feeling.
22:33You do just want to run down the hill and sing.
22:35Right, as soon as we can't afford that musical, why don't we make our own?
22:39Marnet, you choreographed.
22:40Come on, boys.
22:41So, Dad, first you're going to put your hands on the back.
22:43You made a dent.
22:44You made a dent.
22:45Yeah?
22:46Yeah.
22:47Yeah.
22:48And I thought you were going to get jack hunts.
22:50Five, six, seven...
22:51What?
22:52Okay, five, six, seven, eight, jack hunts.
22:54Five, six, seven, eight, jack hunts.
23:11We might be away from our farm, but we're still farming.
23:15Learning from our hosts, Josef and Martina.
23:18Their farm has been home to dairy cows for centuries.
23:22In the summer, the 24 strong herd graze up in the mountains.
23:27But in the winter months, Josef and Martina keep them closer.
23:32This is a brown...
23:34Brown Swiss.
23:35Brown Swiss, a cow.
23:37Yeah.
23:38This is Franzi.
23:39Hey, Franzi.
23:41All cows have name.
23:43Yeah, they give the farm a bit of soul.
23:45I mean, they're very happy.
23:48The cows are brought in each evening for milking.
23:52And tonight, they want us to lend a hand.
23:55So, while Liz and Martina are calling the herd from the lower field...
23:59Come on, come on.
24:01Come on.
24:02Whoosh, whoosh.
24:03Whoosh, whoosh.
24:04Whoosh, whoosh.
24:05Yep, chop.
24:06Chop, chop.
24:07Me, Josef and Jakob are bringing some of the heifers down the lane.
24:11Can't imagine walking the cows on our road.
24:13We're off the main road, so I can't imagine those on the A54.
24:16Yeah.
24:19But the neighbours here are used to waiting.
24:22And I have to say, seeing these cows up close really is a sight to behold.
24:28The bell's just really had a different dynamic.
24:30Yeah, I can imagine it's quite a nice, nice feeling when they've got them all going in one direction with us.
24:40The bell.
24:42Oh, I hope.
24:43Should I get that one in?
24:44Another stray.
24:45Uh-uh, uh-uh, uh-uh.
24:46Come on.
24:47Sh-sh-sh-sh.
24:48Sh-sh-sh-sh.
24:49Sh-sh-sh-sh-sh.
24:50Sh-sh-sh-sh-sh.
24:51Oh.
24:55Oh.
24:56Oh.
24:57Oh.
24:58Just as Josef learned from his father, Jakob is now doing the same, as he prepares to become the 15th generation of the family to run the farm.
25:08What does it feel like now when you see him as a kind of grown man and he still loves it?
25:12He still...
25:13Yeah, he's nice for me.
25:15Yeah, yeah.
25:16When the next generation also wants to do it.
25:19Obviously our children are quite young, so we don't know yet which ones will be the farmers.
25:24Yeah.
25:25Difficult to say when they're so young how it's long, but which is coming the next 10 years.
25:31I would love it if they all had some role to play.
25:34Yeah.
25:35I enjoyed that.
25:36That was good.
25:42Yeah, what a great little setup they've got.
25:43It's really, really inspiring, really.
25:46You can kind of see the pride, you know, that they all share in their legacy.
25:50With these guys, the family's everything to them.
25:54They just, you know, the whole heritage, the whole family story is here.
25:59It's on this farm and this is where it has lived for 14 generations
26:03and hopefully it'll, you know, live for many more.
26:08And I'm not the only one feeling inspired.
26:11She's happy now, look at her.
26:13She's hopping in.
26:14She don't.
26:15That was a smooth operation.
26:16The bells are chiming.
26:18You've got that stunning backdrop.
26:20Look at the sun just setting on that.
26:23And the cows are slowly walking in.
26:26It's a dream come true, really.
26:29Before we head inside, we can't resist taking a front row seat for milking time.
26:35They look happy, don't they?
26:36Munching away.
26:38The bells jingling away.
26:39Yeah.
26:41Nice cubicles.
26:42Nice neat cubicles.
26:44Do you want to go milk?
26:45Yes, let's milk.
26:46So the cows go out themselves and then the next lot will know to just come in themselves.
26:52Without him herding them in, he'll just give them a little whistle.
26:55Oh!
27:03Kelvin, that is impressive, isn't it?
27:05I can just see how excited Liz is getting, but whether she want to be up milking at 6 o'clock in morning is a different story.
27:14But after a couple of years rearing beef cattle, Liz and I are in agreement on one thing.
27:19A house cow is a great idea and it gives us a nice introduction into a micro micro dairy.
27:27We could get a portable milker, but we'd have to milk it and that could be an early morning start.
27:35Have you thought about that?
27:36Well, you could do the mornings and I could do the late shift.
27:39Well, we could run a cow and calf dairy.
27:41Yeah, I'm excited.
27:42Do you know anyone that sells Jersey cows?
27:44See if they've got any cows for sale, we can go on with a cow.
27:47See if we can get that through customs.
27:49See if you can get one of them in your hand luggage.
27:51I couldn't even get my lift farm through customs.
27:52I'm not going to get a cow through, am I?
28:08Our family are in Austria, staying on a farm that has become our home away from home this Christmas.
28:14Are you?
28:16Or are you?
28:18Or are you?
28:20No.
28:22Only dogs could hear that.
28:25You need some nodules.
28:27I could wake up to this every day.
28:29Milo, let's say your friends were in that valley over there
28:32and you had to communicate to them.
28:34Rather than shout, what would you do?
28:36Do it louder?
28:39But in Austria, they yodel.
28:40Give us an example.
28:41I'll give you an example.
28:42example traditionally yordling was used to call livestock and send messages
28:52between alpine farms and villages very good my turn I'm gonna be mama be we
29:09will never get us to come back here ever again do you want to yodel come here
29:13Maximus right enough yodeling come on we've got jobs to do Martina and Yosef are waiting for us
29:25one more yodel for the road do their farmers really do this it's farms or do their farmers
29:33not yodel don't use that
29:53it's a new day on the farm hold hold this on the left side it's okay and Martina still has plenty of jobs
30:02for the kids to help with starting with a quick visit to check on her feathered friends the white
30:08duck is viola and the black stack is violetta as well as a couple of ducks Martina also keeps a dozen
30:17chickens so clever Martina so that's just a mother yeah it's a long letter in this they go in the
30:24and the chicken cattle chicken house we go inside yes
30:30Martina has a very old traditional chicken chance
30:43you do that how do you do it yeah they hear my voice and so they come in coming
31:02very good you gotta get your tongue right for that one haven't you you must do it at home
31:16have you chicken at home yeah have we got chickens yeah how many four well done Max and have you and
31:25also in Google we've got a cockerel yes yes but we're not going to chicks yet no fertilized eggs
31:30yet we're working on it so we go here no every children has a nest you the first please this sap is
31:39amazing these hens she's got 12 hens they're all laying exactly where she wants them and so that
31:46they're fresh for the next day so this is where they sleep they've got dust bath you've got feed
31:51they've got water and they've got their little bed where they lay the eggs it's just unbelievable
31:56the setup is unbelievable if we're going to encourage our chickens to be more productive
32:02Liz might need to bring some of these ideas back home
32:12like us Yosef owns around 35 acres of woodland on the farm and today Milo and I are heading out on a
32:21hike to carry out a very important mission we're gonna head into these woods here I'm gonna try and
32:28pick a tree out so I'm needed some big muscles well ideally a Christmas tree this woodland is used for
32:37heating the farm through the winter and is home to at least 20 different species of trees look at this
32:43Milo look at the little trees or the farmer before was telling me that they have wolves in Austria so I
32:53just hope don't make me scared you know I'm in here too I know you're in year two but I was well I was
33:02getting a bit scared so I needed I was hoping that you could just protect me just in case nothing is going to
33:08distract Milo from his search for the perfect tree what a spy this is lovely this is a fantastic spot
33:18every year the family choose and cut their own tree do you like the woods it's peaceful isn't it yeah
33:29yeah yeah wood is the nicest place to come down this is not a good one has two oh yeah that's not a good one
33:37as our search begins our hopes are high but so are the trees
33:42what do you think of that tree Milo that's a good one but you're too big too big keep looking Milo
33:53oh what do you think Milo is that a good one this one yeah is this a good one yeah yeah so you think
34:05this one's a good one we're gonna take this back for everybody right come on now let's get this one
34:10I think he's chose here I think this is the one cut it oh he's getting in there stand back good when it
34:18falls over you have to catch it are you ready
34:27yay there we go wow very good well you're not carrying this one back Milo
34:33no I'm not
34:35are you carrying those ones so I'll I'll carry this one back then drag it back come on
34:40right you get the end yeah I'll get the end you ready one one two three go in in look at that good job good job good job
35:10we've only been here a few days and the kids have slipped easily into life on the Austrian hills
35:17feeling inspired Liz and I are already thinking about what ideas we can take back home this is a
35:24great vegetable I love this we have to get a proper vegetable yeah it's the one thing we were taught day
35:33one you have to use every element of your farm and they do the house the barn the fields even use the
35:40mountains we've only really scratched the surface being self-sufficient having everything or as much
35:46as possible that you would ever require ever need at your fingertips that's just a dream
36:03nothing on this farm goes to waste like us their byproducts are used for other purposes and with
36:13milk a plenty here there's another Austrian tradition Martina's keen to share with Liz we need flour
36:19eggs a room milk yeast yeast and butter all from your farm but a milk is and this is the butter from our
36:28allen where the cows as well it's from our cows from your cows they're going to make an Austrian festive
36:35favorite bowen krapfen or farmers donuts this butter is so creamy then you can do the eggs it's great to
36:46see the eggs the kids collected being put to good use they are so yellow lovely color whisk yeah
36:58so she doesn't measure anything she just knows she just feels she just has the feeling yeah the
37:08farmer wise they make this and they people can buy oh yeah so then we make 500 so wow it's many yeah
37:16yeah do you so always cook at home so I'm not very good at cooking I'm not never but you can learn
37:25I can learn exactly I can learn eating not great at cooking I do my best I burnt the kettle once so
37:32please you hold it yeah so mmm it smells good gosh it's hot hard work isn't it yeah it's hot yes
37:45hi look at this Milo your mom is cooking smell that hmm a bit like a Yorkshire pudding very good very
37:55good then he go sleep oh then he's gonna rise they put a cloth over it and it'll rise underneath go
38:04sleep bye bye and we'll wait once the dough has risen the pastries are deep-fried until they're golden brown
38:12Wow they smell so good they smell like doughnuts don't they smell them Milo
38:23they smell so good they look amazing Martina we take this and then it's a hole and in this hole we can put
38:32some sauerkraut or a jam and we put powder sugar on it yes do with this yes okay so and then we need some
38:51yes please yeah and then twist it that's it yeah mmm more more more more more more yes wow yeah oh my
39:08goodness I think that's enough that looks amazing well done Milo now Milo oh my god
39:17it smells like onion that's not for children children are sweet wow look at that amazing sweet and sour
39:30fantastic that was so fascinating and it's just so lovely to see that they have this real farmer's
39:38wife tradition and they keep this tradition and they cook to celebrate and actually that's probably Kelvin's
39:43street woman a farmer's wife but you got me and I can't cook
39:48it's almost time for us to leave the farm
40:05and for our final night Yosef and Martina's daughter Karina has joined us along with her
40:22grandparents Yosef and Elizabeth me and the boys have donned our Christmas jumpers but looking at
40:29the Akraina family I'm starting to feel a little underdressed this is like a traditional clothes we
40:35wear on special occasions for example Christmas and the leather hose which is like leather pants and
40:42they're very durable so you can have them all your life oh wow this is also very traditional
40:47dancing which also this one my mom laid herself so they're handmade they're hand stitched you made that wow
40:54wow what does it feel like with your grandparents when they see their grandchildren about to maybe
41:00take over the farm and I can't imagine what that must feel like that sense of pride and
41:05you were saying that they're very happy that tradition continues so there's three three generations here
41:15yes you're the first generation where the next is coming the next is the next is
41:22coming who I don't know but maybe yeah well after a wonderful stay on this farm we
41:32wanted to say thank you because you've looked after us so well so this is all
41:36from the farm this is a blanket made from our sheep's wall yeah from our sheep yeah
41:42wow and we have it made in a factory near us where where we grew up so that that's all from
41:47our sheep it's soft and and so green it's a lovely color along with a few gifts from home
41:55we're also sharing the traditional sweet treats made by the twins Max and Mateus actually made these
42:01for you they were made in Innsbruck and it's their famous gingerbread and chocolate yeah so they made
42:08them by hand and a decoration we can take that home we can put that on the Christmas tree at home
42:31thank you thank you so much what better way to toast our hosts than with a glass of milk from
42:41their cows I just wanted to say thank you so much for hosting us what a wonderful family you have and
42:48it's so inspiring to see that 14 generations in still flying the the Austrian farming flag everything
42:56you stand for is what we all we stand for as well with family being together and obviously this time
43:04of year is celebrating the most important time of the year which is Christmas so and from us to you
43:10Merry Christmas and thank you and thank you very nice coming a surprise for you oh really oh

44:49Every year.
44:49More than 50 years.
44:51Wow.
44:52You're the free shepherds.
44:54Yeah, we're shepherds.

44:57That was so beautiful.
44:58Yeah.
44:59I like it.
45:00With music playing and snaps flowing,
45:03this night has made the perfect end to our time in Austria.
45:07It has just been an amazing trip, hasn't it, from start to finish?
45:11I think being at the farm has been my favourite out of it all,
45:14where you just realise that traditions, family,
45:19the whole environment, the community, everything,
45:22is what's important, isn't it?
45:24I love the whole tradition thing.
45:25I think even if we start our own traditions,
45:27whatever it is, I just think traditions are really, really important.
45:30It's a legacy.
45:31It's a real...
45:31It's what we are now.
45:33It's who we are.
45:34And I just feel like it's in our DNA.
45:35And I just want to pass it on to the kids.
45:38And I want them to feel that when they grow up,
45:40all they ever remember was that sense of coming together,
45:43working hard on the farm, trying different things.
45:46It's been amazing.
45:47It's been amazing, yeah.
45:48Really, really good.
45:50Merry Christmas.
45:51Merry Christmas.
45:51Merry Christmas.
