00:00Look, if I had a New Year's wish, it would be for Thailand to find some semblance of stability.
00:05We're cutting through all the noise of 2025 and bringing you the top stories out of Thailand that
00:10are still on our mind. This one hits at the heart of the nation. The Bureau of the Royal Household
00:16announced on Friday, October 24th, that Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother,
00:21passed away peacefully at King Chulalongkon Memorial Hospital at the age of 93. Noted for
00:28her direct and personal engagement with her subjects, Queen Sirikit was a champion of
00:33Thailand's women and minority groups. Even today, Thailand continues to mourn the loss of the Queen
00:39Mother, with a steady number of people paying their respects and taking part in special ceremonies
00:44carried out by the Royal Household. On March 28th, an 8.2 magnitude earthquake erupted just south of
00:52Myanmar. What would soon be recorded as the most powerful quake to impact Thailand in 90 years
00:59would ultimately send out a ripple so strong it would trigger evacuations and panic from the northern
01:05city of Chiang Mai to the capital of Bangkok. And now, closer to the year-end, on November 19th,
01:12major cloudbursts dumped an amount of water that overwhelmed the city's flood prevention systems.
01:17Local residents found themselves in up to three meters of inundation. Undoubtedly, the biggest
01:24matter in Thailand this year is its persisting conflict with its neighbor, Cambodia. All-out
01:30fighting erupted on July 24th, after rockets launched by Cambodia hit civilian targets, killing
01:36eight citizens at a 7-11 in Sisiget province. The future of the conflict is uncertain. Hostilities
01:42are still running high in 2026, and things are getting more complicated. Look, if I had a new
01:49year's wish, it would be for Thailand to find some semblance of stability. From all of us here at
01:54The Nation, we look forward to another fantastic year of cutting through the noise in 2026. Happy New
02:00Year. I'm Benjamin Ruchovakan for The Signal.
