00:00All right, welcome aboard. It's time to take a closer look at hair and wardrobe on the Polar Express.
00:07Yeah, how do you create clothes in a computer?
00:10And how do you design digital do's?
00:12It turns out that digital hair and its movement were the two most difficult phases of Polar Express production.
00:18Think about it. First they had to get the shape right, then they had to figure out how the hair moved,
00:23like when the wind blew through it, like when Hero Boy was on top of the train.
00:30So the hair crew got to work, designed every single piece of hair in the movie,
00:34put it on each character, then scanned it into the computer, just like the engineer.
00:39They even did his beard. I wonder what his hair looks like.
00:43Wow, it's long. They did a great job.
00:48We had situations in the movie where it was almost too detailed, so we turned some of the detail off.
00:55And that's the buzz on hair.
00:57If you're making a buzz, guess whose do was the easiest to do?
00:59Mine.
01:00Exactly.
01:01I told you my hair was on the right track.
01:04Fall ahead slow.
01:07All right, from digital do's to creating costumes in a computer.
01:11The creation of wardrobe, it was all done kind of in the foundation of live action cinema brought into the computer.
01:18Check this out. They had over 30 costumes to make for all the characters on the Polar Express.
01:27Joanna Johnston put a costume on every character one time, one day.
01:33And then they did full makeup like when we did Tom and Santa Claus.
01:38Full hair, full beard, makeup, the whole thing.
01:42And he wore it for 15 minutes.
01:45Cyber scanned them.
01:47And that was it.
01:48Wow. How great would that be?
01:50You could just scan on what you want to wear for the whole school year.
01:52Well, there's a little more to it than that.
01:54The actual movement of the clothing, obviously, the effects animators had to animate.
01:58That's where their art artistry comes into play.
02:01The computer would then register that information.
02:04And when it went through those movements during the course of the film,
02:07it would actually draw on those movements to create real dynamics like in real life.
02:13From designing digital do's and creating cool clothes to visualizing the North Pole.
02:17The makers of this movie have amazing imaginations.
02:21That's right. They do.
02:24Because it takes the kind of wagonnen down a two style and at one
02:25There's a lot of pointer.
02:26The elements of theä¿¡ same page to use in a square line.
02:27That's right.
02:28From the background in a live image here.
02:29The beauty of the vision can be brought to you
02:33And that's important.
02:34Now it's important to understand both clues and the charm.
02:36You can remind yourself how worlds paid off nerve other than you are fond ofaya.
02:41The disappointing year of the contrast is inconsistent with the
02:46Win sperm.
02:48So simply we made confident.
02:49When it comes back when we started translating it.
