00:09Imagine being swallowed whole by a 60,000 pound sea monster.
00:15The whales open their mouths wide and surge up and take a big gulp.
00:20Before they can react, it actually takes them under the water.
00:25Or learning the hard way that dogs aren't very good drivers.
00:30That sweet, adorable boxer dog jumps through the driver's side door and lands on the accelerator.
00:38Suddenly, the van is hurling backwards towards James.
00:43How about being in the middle of a fight between a snake and a hawk?
00:48The snake coils even tighter around Peggy's arm.
00:52And that hawk is persistently pecking at the snake.
00:56Peggy's arm is going through it.
00:58She's like, Jesus, take the snake and the hawk.
01:01These are the freak accidents.
01:04So strange, they are truly unbelievable.
01:06Any homeowner knows DIY projects can be dangerous.
01:22But next time you whack your thumb with a hammer and mutter every swear word under the sun,
01:26you'll want to remember the story of Forthman Murph.
01:29And realize it could be a lot worse.
01:32Forthman Murph is a guy that likes doing hard work.
01:40And he's a guy that likes doing the job by himself.
01:45He's a 74-year-old retired lumberjack.
01:48And Forthman has decided to retire to a multi-acre property where he's far away from everything
01:54and he's surrounded by trees.
01:58One day, he looks up at a 100-foot-tall tree on his property and decides its day has come.
02:05Forthman fires up the chainsaw and is ready to get to work.
02:08He performs this technique that's called notching, where he expertly cuts this V-shape into the side of the tree where he wants the tree to fall.
02:19And then on the other side, he makes this horizontal cut.
02:24With the chainsaw still roaring, Forthman steps back to admire his work.
02:29The tall tree tips over just like he wants it to.
02:32But as it falls,
02:34it hits the massive limb of another tree nearby.
02:39The rogue limb comes crashing down.
02:41It slams into Forthman's shoulder, knocks him back 10 feet.
02:44He ends up falling into this ditch.
02:48Then another nearby tree falls and crushes his foot and breaks his leg.
02:53But he has not let go of the chainsaw.
02:58He twists his body and he ends up landing on his face.
03:03He blacks out.
03:05A few seconds later, Forthman wakes up to a sound he's never heard before.
03:11The chainsaw is still running.
03:14And he can tell it's cutting something, but it's not wood.
03:18He sits up.
03:20He looks down.
03:21And he notices there's this giant pool of blood.
03:25That's when he's hit with an excruciating pain.
03:29Somehow, as he was falling, still holding onto the chainsaw,
03:33he manages to land on top of it with his neck.
03:36And it continued to cut through his windpipe, his esophagus, and muscles.
03:44And now his head is only held on by his carotid artery and his spine.
03:51Forthman realized that the only way he's going to be saved is by getting to his truck.
03:56Problem.
03:57His truck is 150 feet away, which means he now has to hop all the way to his truck
04:04while also maintaining the integrity of his severed head,
04:09literally holding it on top of his neck so it doesn't fall off.
04:13As he's hopping along, he's struggling to breathe.
04:16The saw has cut his esophagus and his windpipe, and things keep filling up with blood.
04:20So every so often, he has to stop, lean forward, lift his head like a Pez dispenser
04:25so he can clear his airways of blood so he can breathe again.
04:28Miraculously, he makes it to the truck, opens the door, turns the key,
04:36and starts driving the half a mile to his neighbor's house.
04:40Despite being shocked by the gruesome sight,
04:43Forthman's neighbor drives him to the nearest hospital, 20 miles away.
04:48When they get there, this hospital is a rural hospital.
04:52It is not equipped to put a man's head back onto his shoulders and neck properly.
04:57So they put him in an ambulance and tell him he's got to go to a bigger hospital in Tupelo,
05:0230 miles away.
05:05Two hours after the accident, Forthman finally makes it to Tupelo,
05:08but he's barely hanging on.
05:12Forthman goes through six surgeries to reattach his head
05:15and fighting off all sorts of infections along the way,
05:18and he makes it.
05:21Unbelievably, after all of these surgeries, seven months later,
05:25he's able to talk and breathe and speak completely normally.
05:30Forthman's surgeon can't even believe it and says with his injuries,
05:34he shouldn't have even survived if that had happened in the hospital parking lot,
05:39let alone two hours away by himself in the forest.
05:45Forthman Murph lives another 18 years
05:47and continues cutting down trees until the age of 92,
05:50still using that same chainsaw.
05:54While his miracle survival is one in a million,
05:57at a Sacramento ice cream parlor, the odds aren't so kind.
06:01It's a beautiful Sunday in September,
06:05and the Golden West Air Show is in full swing
06:09at the Sacramento Executive Airport.
06:12There are about a thousand airplane enthusiasts and families
06:15watching from the ground as all kinds of military planes,
06:18old aircraft, as well as experimental newer planes,
06:22buzz around and do various tricks in the sky above.
06:25By 4.30 p.m., the show comes to an end,
06:29and spectators are looking to make a fun afternoon a little bit sweeter.
06:33Across the street from the air show
06:35is a place called Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor.
06:37There's a huge crowd, many of them coming from the air show,
06:40and they're gathered enjoying some ice cream with family and friends.
06:44And one of the coolest things about it
06:46is that it's located directly in line with the end of the runway.
06:49So while you're enjoying a banana split,
06:51you can actually watch the planes taking off right above you.
06:54Back on the tarmac,
06:57pilots from the air show are ready to head home,
07:00including Richard Bingham
07:01and his vintage Korean War era F-86.
07:04The F-86 is one of the fan favorites.
07:08This airplane is built for dogfighting,
07:11and the cool thing about that airplane
07:13is that it's actually seen combat during the Korean War.
07:17Bingham, who is a very seasoned pilot,
07:20taxis to his runway position.
07:21Then, on command, he throttles up
07:25and speeds down the runway.
07:27And about a third of the way down the runway,
07:29things start to go bad.
07:34He goes to lift the nose of the airplane up,
07:37and for some reason, he can't get airborne,
07:40and he's still cruising across the ground
07:42in excess of 150 miles an hour.
07:45Bingham tries to abort the takeoff,
07:47but it's too late for that.
07:48He runs out of runway.
07:52In a matter of seconds,
07:53the F-86 speeds past the runway
07:55and through a chain-link fence,
07:57causing the external fuel tanks to explode.
07:59The plane is now on fire,
08:02completely out of control.
08:05It crosses the street
08:06and crashes through a passing car.
08:10Both people in the car are instantly killed,
08:12but this freak accident doesn't end there.
08:14This out-of-control fireball
08:17plows through a parking lot
08:19and slams violently
08:21into the crowded Farrell's ice cream shop.
08:24An explosion rips through the ice cream parlor.
08:29It's like a missile that's torn through it.
08:34Inside, people are pinned under pieces of plane and roof,
08:39many of them already dead.
08:40It looks like a war zone.
08:43Firefighters are quick on the scene
08:44and able to save 28 people,
08:46but many others aren't so lucky.
08:48Twenty-three souls are lost that day
08:53at the ice cream parlor
08:54and countless more are injured.
08:57As for Richard Bingham,
08:59miraculously, he survives.
09:02As he's being carried to safety
09:04with a broken leg and arm,
09:05he begs the first responders,
09:08don't save me,
09:09save the people in the fire.
09:11It appears to be a powerful moment of selflessness
09:14until the truth behind the accident is revealed.
09:17In a later FAA investigation,
09:21Richard testifies that he'd only spent
09:23three and a half hours in the cockpit of this plane,
09:25yet still claiming prior to the flight
09:28that he'd mastered the aircraft.
09:31Richard is a master pilot.
09:32He's got over 2,000 hours under his belt.
09:36But in Learjets, this is a military aircraft.
09:40Experts say you need 100 hours minimum
09:42to become proficient in a Cold War-era fighter plane like this.
09:47Due to his inexperience flying this airplane,
09:50he had no idea that the F-86,
09:53the way it's designed,
09:55is you can't be aggressive
09:56in bringing the nose of the airplane up
09:58before you get the right amount of speed.
10:02Had he had more experience flying it,
10:04he would have known
10:05when that nose comes up too quickly,
10:08you kill all the airflow over the wings,
10:10causing the airplane
10:11not to be able to generate lift,
10:13destroying your chances of being able to take off.
10:15By the end of the investigation,
10:19while Richard Bingham isn't criminally charged,
10:22he does have his pilot's license revoked.
10:24While a tragic day,
10:29the Farrell's ice cream disaster compels the FAA
10:32to impose heavy restrictions
10:34on retired military aircraft
10:36operating in densely populated areas.
10:38Our greatest pleasures
10:42often come from the simplest things.
10:45For a young Ukrainian lab tech,
10:47it's chewing bubble gum.
10:49But his obsession for never-ending flavor
10:51backfires in a truly unbelievable way.
10:57Vladimir Lykonos is a 25-year-old student
11:00at Kiev Polytechnic Institute
11:02with a passion for chemistry.
11:06He's there training to become a scientist,
11:08but he has a habit
11:10of taking chemicals home from the lab.
11:13Not because he's trying to steal them
11:15or for any nefarious purposes.
11:16He's just very, very into the study of chemistry.
11:19That passion even extends to Christmas break,
11:22when Vladimir's home for the holidays.
11:24Vladimir spends a lot of time
11:26in his bedroom at home
11:28running various experiments.
11:30And while he does,
11:32he chews a lot of gum.
11:34Like a lot of people,
11:35Vladimir hates it
11:36when you're chewing your gum
11:37and all the flavor disappears.
11:38It's just like chewing cardboard.
11:40Luckily, Vladimir figures out
11:42how to solve this problem
11:43using chemistry.
11:45On his desk next to his computer,
11:47he keeps a little saucer
11:48of powdered citric acid.
11:51Citric acid is incredibly powerful.
11:53It's a flavor enhancer
11:55for candies and sodas.
11:56And when he dips his gum in it
11:58and puts it back in his mouth,
11:59it restores its flavor.
12:01He has his lab stuff
12:02strewn all around his room.
12:04And in this particular day,
12:05next to his saucer
12:06of citric acid powder,
12:08he has a little baggie
12:09of another powder from his lab.
12:12Vladimir is so focused on his work
12:15that while he's dipping and chewing,
12:17dipping and chewing,
12:18he accidentally dips into the other bag
12:20and then puts the gum back in his mouth
12:22and continues chewing.
12:24Without warning,
12:25that small mix-up triggers a violent explosion.
12:31His brother Rostislav goes into Vlad's room
12:34to check on what had happened.
12:36And when he gets there,
12:37he sees the most horrifying thing
12:40you could ever imagine.
12:42He sees his brother Vlad
12:43sitting in his chair,
12:45blood covering his space
12:46because his lower jaw
12:48is completely missing.
12:51It turns out the other powder
12:52that he had dipped his gum in
12:54was an explosive.
12:55It's later discovered that Vlad,
12:57in addition to being very passionate
12:59about chemistry,
13:00also had an affinity
13:01for making his own fireworks.
13:04While the actual name
13:05of the explosive powder
13:06was never released,
13:07it's estimated
13:09that it was four times
13:11more powerful than TNT.
13:13Many speculate
13:14that it could be
13:15tert-butyl lithium or cyclonite
13:17because both of those
13:18are white powders
13:19that react explosively to pressure.
13:22So while Vlad is chewing this gum,
13:24which has been dipped
13:25in this chemical,
13:26the act of chewing
13:27compresses all of these
13:29explosive molecules repeatedly,
13:31which causes it to explode.
13:35Police and paramedics
13:37rush to the house,
13:38but by the time they get there,
13:40it's too late.
13:41Vladimir's dead.
13:42A lot of the first responders
13:44that arrived on the scene
13:45described it as
13:46one of the most terrifying
13:48things they've ever encountered.
13:51Death by bubble gum is awful.
13:53But two years later,
13:54on the other side of the world,
13:56another man finds himself
13:57in a different kind
13:59of bubble trouble.
14:02Steve McCormack
14:03is a truck driver
14:04from Apatiki, New Zealand,
14:06which is on the North Island,
14:07and it's a small town
14:08that's miles
14:09from the nearest hospital.
14:12Steven is at work
14:13standing behind his truck cab,
14:15hooking it up to a trailer,
14:18something he's done
14:19a thousand times before.
14:22It's just another day on the job
14:24until one small misstep
14:26changes that.
14:27All of a sudden,
14:29Steven slips.
14:33And he feels a sharp pain
14:35in his left buttock.
14:37And at first he thinks,
14:38ah, he fell on a nail
14:40or something sharp.
14:42Then he hears a whoosh sound
14:43of compressed air.
14:46He turns to see
14:47what he's fallen on,
14:48and it's not good.
14:49It's a high-pressure air hose
14:51that's now embedded
14:52in his rapidly expanding
14:54left buttock.
14:56Within seconds,
14:57the valve is releasing air
15:00into his body
15:01up to a pressure
15:02of 160 psi
15:04that's more than twice enough
15:06to burst the tires
15:08of his truck.
15:09The air pressure
15:10is so powerful
15:11that Steven starts
15:12to inflate.
15:14His skin is pulling taut
15:16and expanding.
15:18Skin's not supposed
15:19to do this.
15:20Yeah, does skin expand
15:21when one is pregnant
15:22or gains weight?
15:23Yes.
15:23But this is done
15:24over a period of time,
15:27not instantaneously.
15:28The pain is excruciating.
15:30In a matter of minutes,
15:31he's twice his normal size.
15:34His face is unrecognizable.
15:37Even his eyes
15:38are getting bigger.
15:39And one of them,
15:40he loses sight.
15:41His bosses rush over
15:43to see what is going on.
15:45The valve is still
15:46embedded in him
15:48and Steven is howling
15:49in pain.
15:51He is so firmly affixed
15:54to this nozzle
15:56that his bosses
15:57can't pry him from it.
15:59His skin has expanded
16:00around it.
16:01With no way
16:02to pull the hose out,
16:04they quickly shut off
16:05the air supply.
16:06Now, after they're able
16:07to stop the airflow
16:09going into Steve,
16:10his co-workers
16:11are actually able
16:12to lift him off
16:13of the valve
16:13and lay him on his side.
16:15Which is a good start.
16:16There's just one problem.
16:19The air isn't coming
16:20out of Steve.
16:22His bosses put ice packs
16:23on him to help
16:24relieve his suffering,
16:25but he's laying there
16:26in agony for over an hour
16:28before medics
16:29finally arrive.
16:31When the emergency
16:32service gets there,
16:34their first thought is,
16:35let's give him something
16:35for the pain.
16:36So they try to put something
16:37in one of his veins,
16:38but the pressure
16:39from the air
16:40inside his body
16:41just shoots the needle
16:43right out.
16:44When the doctors
16:45examined Stephen,
16:46they realized
16:46that the air
16:47from the compressor
16:48has filled
16:49his body cavity,
16:50it's separated muscle
16:51from fat,
16:52and it's putting pressure
16:53on his heart
16:53and his lungs.
16:55One thing the doctors
16:56do note right away
16:57is how lucky he is
16:59because if that valve
17:00had hit an artery
17:01or a vein,
17:02it would be deadly.
17:03But thankfully,
17:04it was just embedded
17:05in the fat tissue
17:06of his buttock,
17:07which saved his life.
17:09Doctors insert a tube
17:11through Stephen's ribs
17:12and into his lungs
17:13to help him breathe.
17:15So the tube was able
17:16to help him breathe better,
17:17but it didn't do anything
17:18about all of the air
17:20in his body.
17:21Oh no, unfortunately,
17:22he would have to wait
17:23for it to pass
17:24the old-fashioned way
17:26through belching
17:27and flatulence.
17:29After three days
17:31in intensive care
17:32and an inordinate amount
17:34of past gas
17:35Stephen is restored
17:36to his normal size
17:38in one of the most
17:39bizarre accidents
17:40the doctors
17:41have ever seen.
17:44Except for a small
17:46puncture scar,
17:47Stephen walks away
17:47good as new
17:48and with a bloated
17:49reputation to match
17:50forever known
17:51as the real-life
17:52Michelin Man.
17:56When you've got a dog,
17:58excitement is part
17:58of the package.
18:00Unfortunately,
18:00that exuberance
18:01can sometimes have
18:02unexpected consequences.
18:0568-year-old James Campbell
18:09lives in Florida
18:10and he loves
18:11his pet boxer.
18:13What's not to love
18:14about a boxer?
18:15His squishy little face,
18:17the little nub tail.
18:18It's his best friend.
18:20So one lovely day,
18:21James and his wife,
18:22Iris, decide they're
18:23going to hop
18:24into their 1995
18:25Chevy van
18:26and head out
18:27to get some errands done.
18:29Iris hops in the driver's seat
18:30because she's going to
18:31back the van
18:31down the driveway
18:32and then James
18:33will get out
18:34and open the gate.
18:36As she's always done,
18:38Iris has the van
18:39in reverse
18:39with her foot
18:41on the brake
18:42and she opens the door
18:43so she can keep
18:44an eye on James
18:45to know when
18:46the gates open
18:47so she knows
18:48when to back up.
18:49And at that very moment,
18:51the couple's
18:5170-pound boxer
18:52comes barreling
18:53through the yard
18:54wondering
18:56where his owners
18:57are going.
18:58And then,
19:00while Iris' door
19:01is open,
19:02that sweet,
19:04adorable boxer dog
19:05jumps
19:06through the driver's
19:07side door
19:08down to the floorboard
19:09and lands squarely
19:11on the accelerator.
19:13Suddenly,
19:14the van is hurling
19:15backwards
19:16towards James.
19:17Iris tries everything
19:19to stop the van
19:20but it's no use.
19:23The van hits James,
19:24runs him over
19:25and ultimately
19:26traps him
19:27underneath the wheels.
19:29When paramedics arrive,
19:30they find James
19:31completely crushed
19:32by the van.
19:33They believe
19:34he died instantly.
19:36You can't blame
19:37the parents.
19:37You can't blame
19:38the dog.
19:39It's just
19:40a tragic,
19:41awful,
19:42unbelievable
19:43and bizarre accident.
19:45Being run over
19:46by your own car
19:47is certainly ironic
19:48but it pales
19:50in comparison
19:51to the man
19:51who meets his maker
19:52by way
19:54of his own
19:54moneymaker.
19:57When you watch
19:58someone ride
19:59a Segway,
20:00it's almost like
20:01they're defying
20:02the laws of physics.
20:03They're kind of
20:03floating by.
20:05In the 2000s,
20:06Segway is
20:07a growing company.
20:08People are using them
20:09all over the place.
20:11Tourists
20:11and male people,
20:13even cops
20:13are using them.
20:14By 2009,
20:16perhaps no one
20:17is a bigger fan
20:18of the Segway
20:19than British millionaire
20:19Jim Heseldon.
20:22At 62 years of age,
20:23Jim Heseldon
20:24is a guy
20:24who just loves
20:26to ride his Segway.
20:27There's not a morning
20:28that goes by
20:29where he doesn't
20:30have his morning roll
20:31through his neighborhood
20:33of West Yorkshire
20:34in England.
20:35Jimmy's is truly
20:35a rags-to-riches story.
20:37He spends his youth
20:38in the slums of Leeds
20:39and at 15,
20:41he starts working
20:41as a coal miner.
20:42Growing up
20:43in the coal mines,
20:44Jimmy becomes
20:45pretty rough and tumble,
20:46but he also has
20:47a few good ideas
20:48and sort of fancies
20:49himself an inventor.
20:51In 1989,
20:53he comes up
20:54with an idea
20:54that makes him rich.
20:56It's a gigantic
20:56foldable container
20:57to be used
20:58on the battlefields.
21:00These containers
21:00become a huge hit
21:01with militaries
21:02all around the planet
21:03and by 2009,
21:05Jimmy's become
21:05one of the wealthiest
21:06people in Britain.
21:08And he's worth
21:08about half a billion dollars.
21:10That's when Jimmy
21:11goes all in
21:12on his favorite pastime.
21:14Jimmy loves his Segway
21:15so much that
21:16on Christmas Day 2009,
21:18he buys
21:19the fledgling Segway Inc.
21:20And being the owner
21:21of the company
21:22doesn't change a thing
21:23for Jimmy.
21:23He's still out there
21:24riding his Segway
21:26every morning.
21:28So nine months
21:29after Jimmy buys
21:30the Segway company,
21:31he's rolling around
21:32on a hilly dirt road
21:34near his home
21:35that he's very familiar with.
21:36He's rolled on it
21:37hundreds of times.
21:38As he's on his roll,
21:40he notices about
21:4150 feet away,
21:42there's a dog walker
21:43approaching him.
21:44So as Jimmy gets closer
21:45to the dog walker,
21:47he decides to be courteous
21:48and let him pass.
21:49So he backs up
21:49just a little bit
21:51to give him room to pass.
21:53Jimmy backs up
21:54his Segway
21:55just a hair too far.
21:57And he and his
21:59beloved Segway
22:00go careening down
22:01this 42-foot drop
22:02complete with jagged rocks
22:04and tree limbs.
22:05And he ends up
22:06falling face first,
22:07dead in the river wharf
22:09below his Segway
22:10floating nearby.
22:12For Segway,
22:14this is terrible PR.
22:16The hard truth is
22:16anytime after Jimmy's death,
22:18every time you saw a Segway,
22:19all you could really think was,
22:21hey,
22:21didn't the owner of the company
22:22die on one of those?
22:24It's a really unfortunate story.
22:26This was a guy
22:26who was loved
22:28by his community,
22:29poured money
22:29into the town,
22:30and he even employed
22:31350 people in Leeds
22:33to work at his factory.
22:36Jim Hasselden's tragic fate
22:38reminds us
22:39that it is sometimes
22:40the things in life
22:41we love the most
22:41that hurt us in the end.
22:43Ah, the monotony
22:47of household chores.
22:49What some of us
22:50wouldn't give
22:50for a little excitement
22:51to save us
22:52from the drudgery.
22:53A Texan named Peggy Jones
22:55would tell you
22:56to be careful
22:57what you wish for.
23:02Peggy Jones
23:03is out riding
23:04her lawnmower
23:05in Silsby, Texas,
23:07just having
23:08a good time
23:09living life.
23:10when all of a sudden
23:12out of nowhere
23:13a snake
23:15falls from the sky
23:17directly onto Peggy.
23:23Clearly the snake
23:24is just as frightened
23:25as Peggy is
23:26because it wraps
23:27around her arm
23:28and then lashes
23:29at her face.
23:32The snake
23:32clings desperately
23:33to Peggy
23:34as she tries
23:34to fight it off.
23:35As bizarre
23:36as this aerial anomaly
23:37is, it's about
23:38to get even stranger.
23:40As she's fighting
23:41with the snake
23:42she hears this crazy
23:43loud screech
23:44coming from above.
23:48When she looks up
23:49she sees a hawk
23:51and it starts diving
23:52directly in her direction.
23:56The hawk latches itself
23:58onto Peggy's arm
23:59and starts pecking
24:00at the snake.
24:02Peggy's now caught
24:04in the crossfire
24:05of a ravenous raptor
24:06and a snake
24:07who's determined
24:08to go down fighting.
24:09The snake coils
24:10even tighter
24:11around Peggy's arm
24:12and that hawk
24:13is persistently
24:14pecking
24:15at the snake
24:16but it just keeps
24:17missing
24:18and hitting
24:19Peggy's poor arm.
24:21Clearly the hawk
24:23had caught the snake
24:24and was planning
24:25on eating it
24:25for lunch
24:26but it dropped it
24:27and now
24:28it wants
24:29its snake back.
24:31Suddenly the hawk
24:31flies away
24:32Peggy's like
24:33I've been saved
24:34but the hawk
24:35just does a couple
24:36circles
24:36and then dive bombs
24:37it again.
24:40It's the same
24:41horror show
24:41over and over again.
24:43Peggy's arm
24:44is going through it.
24:46Peggy just wants
24:47to mow her lawn.
24:48She's like
24:48Jesus take the snake
24:50and the hawk.
24:51Finally the hawk
24:52gets a grip
24:53on the snake
24:53and flies away
24:54with its lunch.
24:56Although she's relieved
24:58that the snake
24:58and hawk are gone
24:59when she looks
25:00at her arm
25:01she realizes
25:02that she's suffering
25:03deep puncture wounds
25:04she has scratches
25:06she's covered
25:06in bruises
25:07she runs to the house
25:08she screams
25:09for her husband
25:10and he drives
25:11into the emergency room.
25:12The doctors
25:13in the emergency room
25:14do not believe
25:15that this woman
25:16has not been stabbed.
25:17It looks identical
25:18to wounds
25:19that would be
25:19sustained from a knife.
25:21And he just kept on
25:22and kept on
25:22and I just couldn't
25:23get rid of the snake.
25:25This is the first time
25:26they've seen
25:26a hawk attack
25:27on a human like this.
25:29This is probably
25:30going to be
25:30the last time
25:31they'll see this.
25:34Lucky for Peggy
25:34she makes a full recovery.
25:36The snake does not.
25:38If Peggy's tail
25:39cautions us
25:40to keep our heads up
25:41while mowing the lawn
25:41the next one
25:43warns lucky fishermen
25:44to keep their mouths shut.
25:48It's just another day
25:50at Boscombe Pier
25:51in Bournemouth
25:52and 28 year old
25:54fisherman Sam Quillum
25:55is out with his friends
25:57and they're hankering
25:58for some Dover sole.
26:01Sam casts his line
26:03he gets a bite
26:04he reels it in
26:05and him and his buddies
26:06are ecstatic
26:07that they've caught a fish.
26:09When Sam pulls the fish up
26:11over the pier
26:12sure enough
26:12it's a Dover sole.
26:14With his catch secured
26:16next is the most important part.
26:18A tradition that's been
26:19practiced by anglers
26:20for decades.
26:21Time to pucker up.
26:23Sam holds the fish
26:25up to his mouth
26:26and has done
26:26what so many fishermen
26:27before him have done
26:29he plants a big smooch
26:30right there on the sole.
26:34Unfortunately for Sam
26:35this is one flirty fish.
26:39The fish squirts out
26:41of his hand
26:41like a bar of soap
26:42and it goes
26:43the only direction
26:43it can go
26:44directly into Sam's mouth.
26:46This fish
26:48moves fast.
26:50Instinctually
26:50it's thinking
26:51it's returning
26:51to the water
26:52so within a matter
26:54of seconds
26:54it's down
26:55past his molars
26:57and it lodges itself
26:59in Sam's throat.
27:01Sam is in
27:02an all out panic
27:03because he can't breathe
27:04and he starts
27:05running around
27:06like a chicken
27:06with his head cut off.
27:08Sam's friends
27:09Steve and Matt
27:10at first
27:11are laughing
27:12and they think
27:12it's a joke
27:13but they quickly
27:13realize that
27:14he's in trouble.
27:16They try to grab
27:18the fish
27:18they reach into
27:19his throat
27:19but they can't
27:20get it.
27:21The fish has
27:22fins around
27:22his body
27:23and they fold
27:24in one direction
27:25allowing it
27:25to go in forward
27:26but if you try
27:27to pull the fish
27:28back out
27:28they open up
27:30and so that
27:30prevents them
27:31from pulling
27:32it out of his throat.
27:33Soon Sam's
27:34turning blue
27:34and ultimately
27:36passes out.
27:37Sam goes
27:38into cardiac arrest
27:39one of his buddies
27:40attempts to perform
27:41CPR while the other
27:42is calling
27:43emergency services
27:44it is chaos
27:45on this pier.
27:48The paramedic
27:49arrives within
27:50three minutes
27:51and when they
27:52see what's going
27:53on
27:54they're in shock
27:55they've never
27:55seen a fish
27:57larger than
27:57someone's windpipe
27:58before.
28:01The paramedic
28:02grabs some forceps
28:03and attempts to
28:04go in there
28:04and pull the fish
28:05out
28:05but they have
28:07the same problem
28:08his friends have
28:08it's stuck.
28:09Finally
28:14after seven tries
28:16he's able
28:20to pull the fish
28:21in its entirety
28:22from Sam's mouth.
28:25On the way
28:25to the hospital
28:25medics and the ambulance
28:27successfully revive Sam
28:28leaving him
28:29with an unbelievable
28:31story to tell.
28:33After he gets
28:34out of the hospital
28:35Sam returns
28:36to the scene
28:37of the kiss
28:37to thank the paramedic
28:39who saved him.
28:40Life's never seen
28:41anything like it.
28:42Also to take
28:43photographs
28:44with the fish
28:45that almost
28:45cost him his life.
28:49When asked
28:50if he will ever
28:50kiss a fish again
28:51Sam says he will
28:52but only if they
28:54are too big
28:54to fit in his mouth.
28:58The Old Testament
29:00speaks of a prophet
29:01Jonah
29:01who spent three days
29:02in the belly
29:03of a whale.
29:04While nobody
29:05has since matched
29:05this feat
29:06two California
29:07kayakers
29:08come closer
29:09than probably
29:09anyone wants to.
29:13It's a gorgeous
29:14and calm
29:15Monday morning
29:15in San Luis
29:16Obispo Bay
29:17making the day
29:18extra special
29:1920 enormous
29:20humpback whales
29:21have been spotted.
29:25Kayakers
29:26and paddleboarders
29:27are flocking
29:28to the bay
29:28with the hopes
29:29of watching
29:30the animals feeding.
29:32Two women
29:33Julia McSorley
29:34and her friend
29:35Liz Cottrell
29:36are enjoying
29:37Julie's two-person
29:38kayak.
29:39That's when
29:40the two ladies
29:40spot a massive
29:41humpback whale
29:42just below the surface.
29:44Julie for one
29:45is thrilled
29:46at the sight
29:46of these real-life giants
29:48and wants to go in
29:49for a closer look.
29:50Liz on the other hand
29:51is a lot more hesitant
29:53but Julie assures her
29:54that nothing bad
29:55will happen.
29:57Liz finally agrees
29:58to go.
29:59Meanwhile
29:59just below the surface
30:01something very big
30:02is getting ready
30:03for lunch.
30:05Humpbacks feed
30:06on what are known
30:07as bait balls
30:08giant dense swarms
30:10or schools of fish
30:12that gather
30:13near the surface.
30:15When the whales
30:16are ready for a bite
30:17they open their mouths
30:19wide and surge up
30:20through the bait balls
30:22and take a big gulp
30:23taking whatever fish
30:25they can catch.
30:27Julie and Liz
30:28are getting
30:28an incredibly close
30:30front row seat
30:31to this amazing sight.
30:33But maybe they're
30:34a little too close
30:35because the women
30:36suddenly find themselves
30:37surrounded by
30:38a very frightened
30:39school of fish.
30:41And before they
30:42can react
30:42suddenly
30:43their entire kayak
30:48is lifted up
30:50into the sky.
30:53Oh no!
30:55Engulfing their entire
30:57kayak
30:57with the two women
30:59inside the boat.
31:00Julie and Liz
31:01are now in the mouth
31:02of this 50 foot
31:0360,000 pound
31:05humpback whale
31:06and it actually
31:07takes them
31:08under the water.
31:11Although it's a truly
31:12terrifying scenario
31:13there's actually
31:14a silver lining.
31:18Unlike sharks
31:19or orcas
31:20humpback whales
31:21do not have teeth.
31:22they use frilly
31:24plates called
31:25baleen
31:26to filter
31:27small fish
31:28and crustaceans
31:29from the water.
31:30They couldn't
31:32swallow a human
31:32because their throat
31:34is only the width
31:35of an average
31:36grapefruit.
31:37The whale
31:38very quickly
31:39realizes that
31:40something in his mouth
31:41that shouldn't be there
31:42so it spits out
31:43Julie and Liz
31:44and they find
31:45themselves popping up
31:46to the surface
31:46of the water
31:47with their kayak
31:48upside down
31:49right next to them.
31:50Surprisingly
31:54they are
31:55completely unharmed.
31:57If there's
31:58any question
31:59just how close
32:00these women got
32:01inside this whale
32:02as they're walking
32:02to their car
32:03Liz shakes out
32:04her shirt
32:05and a bunch
32:06of fish fly out.
32:07When Julie and Liz
32:08get back to their vehicle
32:10Julie checks her pockets
32:11and it appears
32:12there is one casualty
32:13on the day.
32:14Her car keys
32:15are missing.
32:16While kayaking
32:20the high seas
32:21might seem a bit
32:21on the adventurous side
32:23sometimes even
32:24the most benign
32:25tourist activities
32:26can take
32:26a catastrophic turn.
32:31It's a busy Saturday
32:32in a suburb
32:33of Barcelona
32:33and a father
32:36and his young son
32:37are enjoying a stroll.
32:38They're walking
32:39along the center
32:40of the city
32:40and they come across
32:41something that
32:42would be cool
32:42to any kid.
32:43It's a recent
32:44installation
32:45a giant
32:4620 foot
32:47paper mache
32:47statue
32:48of a stegosaurus.
32:50The dad sees this
32:52as the ideal time
32:53to get a selfie.
32:55So his kid
32:56poses
32:57near the dinosaur
32:58and suddenly
32:59they're hit
33:01with the most
33:01foul
33:02rotten
33:03stench.
33:05That putrid smell
33:06seems to be coming
33:07from the depths
33:08of the dinosaur.
33:11The father
33:12starts investigating
33:13he's looking
33:13all around
33:14this dinosaur
33:15and he notices
33:16a crack
33:17in the back
33:17right leg
33:18of the stegosaurus.
33:20He looks
33:21in the crack
33:22on the stegosaurus's
33:23leg.
33:24It's the body
33:25of a dead man
33:26upside down
33:28inside the stegosaurus
33:29and he
33:30is horrified.
33:32so instead of
33:35taking a selfie
33:36the guy
33:37dials emergency
33:38services
33:38all while
33:39wondering
33:40just how
33:41this guy
33:41got in there.
33:43Police arrive
33:44at the scene
33:44and soon
33:45investigators
33:46piece together
33:46the unbelievable
33:48story of the man's
33:49final moments.
33:52A few days prior
33:53a man was
33:54walking through
33:55the town
33:56also taking
33:57photos
33:57when he
33:58sees
33:58the giant
33:59papier-mâché
34:00stegosaurus.
34:02Much like
34:02the father
34:03and son
34:03who found
34:04his body
34:04he's
34:05fascinated
34:06by it.
34:07It is believed
34:08that he then
34:08decides to reach
34:09into the dinosaur
34:10to take photos
34:11of the inside.
34:12and then
34:14he accidentally
34:15drops his
34:16phone
34:16and it
34:17falls
34:18inside
34:21the dinosaur's
34:22body.
34:24The man
34:25who obviously
34:25wants his
34:26phone back
34:26crawls
34:28inside the
34:29belly
34:29of this
34:29stegosaurus
34:30and he
34:31sees this
34:32faint glow
34:32coming up
34:33from the
34:33back right
34:34leg.
34:36Desperately
34:36he's reaching
34:37deeper and
34:38deeper into
34:39the leg
34:39trying to
34:40grab the
34:40phone.
34:42And then
34:42he slips
34:43falls
34:44and smashes
34:45head first
34:46into the
34:46ground
34:47probably
34:47killing him
34:48instantly.
34:50That's where
34:51he remains
34:52for the next
34:52two days
34:53stuck inside
34:55the stegosaurus
34:55leg.
34:57After the
34:58man is
34:58discovered
34:58by the
34:59kid and
35:00his father
35:00firefighters
35:01use saws
35:02to open
35:03the statue
35:03and remove
35:04the dead
35:04body.
35:06Police
35:06immediately
35:07identify
35:07the body
35:08as that
35:09of a
35:0939-year-old
35:10man
35:11who was
35:11reported
35:12missing
35:12by his
35:12family
35:13just days
35:14earlier.
35:16Turns out
35:17extinct or
35:18not
35:18dinosaurs
35:19are mighty
35:20dangerous.
35:23As gender
35:24reveals get
35:25more creative
35:26some ideas
35:27do not go
35:28as planned
35:29like one
35:30dad-to-be
35:30in Arizona
35:31whose vision
35:32turns into
35:33a nightmare
35:33in seconds.
35:34in Arizona
35:38south of
35:39Tucson
35:39a guy
35:40named
35:40Dennis
35:40Dickey
35:41is there
35:41with his
35:41wife
35:42who is
35:42very
35:42very
35:43pregnant.
35:44Now
35:44surrounding
35:45them
35:45is all
35:46of their
35:46friends
35:46and family
35:47and they
35:47have been
35:48assured
35:48they're
35:48about
35:48to see
35:49the most
35:50exciting
35:50gender
35:51reveal
35:51ever done.
35:54Out in
35:54the brush
35:55about 100
35:56feet away
35:57from any
35:57of their
35:58friends
35:58and family
35:58is a
35:59giant box
36:00and it's
36:00labeled
36:01boy
36:02or girl.
36:03Now
36:03Dennis
36:03who happens
36:04to be
36:04a U.S.
36:05border patrols
36:06agent
36:06who's off
36:07duty
36:07pulls out
36:08his rifle
36:09and he
36:10takes aim
36:10at the
36:11box.
36:12After
36:12missing
36:13his first
36:13three shots
36:14the fourth
36:15time is
36:15a direct
36:16hit.
36:17The box
36:18explodes
36:20and it
36:21releases
36:22a giant
36:23powerful
36:24plume
36:24of blue
36:25smoke.
36:26It's a
36:27boy.
36:28Unfortunately
36:29the explosion
36:29doesn't just
36:30let out
36:31a cloud
36:32of blue
36:32smoke.
36:33Fire
36:33immediately
36:34catches
36:34the
36:35surrounding
36:35dry brush.
36:37Within
36:37seconds
36:38the flames
36:38are out
36:3930 feet
36:40in every
36:40direction.
36:42Dennis
36:42Dickey
36:42runs to
36:43the fire
36:43which is
36:44already
36:44out of
36:44control
36:45and he's
36:45trying
36:46everything
36:46he can
36:46to put
36:47it out.
36:47He's
36:48throwing
36:48dirt
36:48on there
36:48he's
36:49trying
36:49to stomp
36:49parts
36:49of it
36:50but nothing
36:50is working.
36:52And the
36:53blaze
36:53just keeps
36:54growing
36:54and growing
36:55and growing.
36:57You gotta
36:57feel bad
36:58for the
36:58mom.
36:59She's
36:59celebrating
37:00that she's
37:00having a
37:00boy but
37:01on the
37:01other
37:01hand
37:02her
37:02husband
37:02just
37:02started
37:03a
37:03wildfire
37:03that
37:03ends
37:04up
37:04burning
37:0447,000
37:05acres
37:06of
37:06Coronado
37:07National
37:07Forest.
37:08How did
37:09he possibly
37:09create such
37:10a massive
37:11explosion
37:11with one
37:12bullet?
37:12Because
37:13days before
37:14Dennis
37:15had stuffed
37:16the box
37:16with something
37:17called
37:18Tannerite.
37:19It is
37:19something
37:20very similar
37:20to TNT.
37:22It's an
37:22explosive
37:23charge
37:23that ignites
37:25when it's
37:25hit by a
37:26projectile
37:27like a
37:28bullet.
37:28immediately
37:29after
37:30accidentally
37:31setting off
37:31the fire
37:32Dennis
37:32does the
37:33right thing
37:33and turns
37:34himself
37:34into
37:35authorities.
37:36While the
37:36sawmill fire
37:37causes
37:38$8 million
37:38in damage,
37:40Dennis Dickey
37:40is ordered
37:41to pay
37:41$220,000
37:42in restitution
37:43and serve
37:44five years
37:45probation.
37:45Of course
37:47gender
37:47reveals
37:48aren't the
37:48only
37:49celebrations
37:49that can
37:50end in
37:50chaos.
37:51A
37:52century
37:52earlier
37:53college
37:54football
37:54fans
37:55found
37:55that
37:55out
37:55the
37:56hard
37:56way.
37:58It's
37:58Thanksgiving
37:59day in
37:59San
37:59Francisco
38:00at
38:00Recreation
38:01Park
38:01Stadium.
38:02It's
38:03the game
38:03of the
38:03year
38:03between
38:04rivals
38:04Cal
38:05Berkeley
38:05Golden
38:05Bears
38:06and
38:06the
38:06Stanford
38:06Cardinals
38:07and
38:08everyone
38:08within
38:09a 30
38:09mile
38:09radius
38:10wants
38:10to be
38:10there.
38:11The
38:11battle
38:12between
38:12Cal
38:12and
38:12Stanford
38:13is
38:13actually
38:14one
38:14of the
38:14oldest
38:14college
38:15football
38:15rivalries
38:16in the
38:16United
38:16States.
38:17It dates
38:17back to
38:181892
38:19and it
38:19comes to
38:20be known
38:20as
38:20the
38:21big
38:21game.
38:23The
38:23stands
38:23are packed
38:24to the
38:24brim
38:24with nearly
38:2520,000
38:25spectators
38:26but outside
38:28thousands
38:28more
38:29are trying
38:29to get
38:29in.
38:30So now
38:30you have
38:31all these
38:31fans
38:32who can't
38:32get into
38:33the game
38:33and they're
38:33now looking
38:34for anywhere
38:35to catch
38:35a glimpse.
38:37Turns out
38:37they're in
38:38luck.
38:39Recreation
38:40Park is in
38:40an industrial
38:41part of the
38:42city that
38:43has a lot
38:43of tall
38:44buildings.
38:45From some
38:45of these
38:45roofs you
38:46can get a
38:46good look
38:47into the
38:48stadium and
38:49all the
38:49action on
38:50the football
38:50field.
38:52But the
38:53best view
38:53is from the
38:54San Francisco
38:55and Pacific
38:55Glassworks
38:56factory just
38:57across the
38:57street from
38:58the stadium.
39:00Now it
39:00being Thanksgiving
39:01day there's
39:02really only a
39:03skeleton crew
39:03working at
39:04this factory and
39:05regardless you
39:06can't really do
39:07anything about
39:08droves of college
39:09students trying to
39:10get on this
39:10roof.
39:10about 400
39:12young men
39:12climb onto
39:13the roof
39:13just in time
39:15for the
39:152.30pm
39:16kickoff.
39:17You've got
39:17scores of
39:18fans up
39:18there but
39:19this metal
39:20corrugated roof
39:21held up with
39:22wooden slats is
39:22not really
39:23designed to
39:24hold hundreds
39:25and hundreds
39:25of cheering
39:26football fans.
39:28About 15
39:29minutes into
39:30the game some
39:30of these fans
39:31start to hear
39:32these little
39:32creaks,
39:33these little
39:34cracks in the
39:34rooftop but
39:35they're not
39:36really paying
39:36too much mind
39:37because people
39:37are cheering,
39:38they're yelling,
39:39they're screaming.
39:39A few moments
39:40pass and then
39:41a loud crack.
39:44The crowd
39:44scrambles to
39:45find safety but
39:46it's too late.
39:48As the roof
39:48gives way under
39:49the heavy weight
39:50fans begin
39:51plummeting into
39:52the factory.
39:53Now luckily
39:53the majority of
39:54the people on
39:55the roof fall
39:56only a few feet
39:57onto the wooden
39:57slats that are
39:58holding up the
39:59roof but
39:59unfortunately
40:00not everyone
40:01is as lucky.
40:03Because this is
40:04the Glassworks
40:04company they have
40:05a giant 500
40:07degree Fahrenheit
40:08furnace burning
40:09inside down
40:11below.
40:12Surrounding that
40:13giant furnace
40:13is this metal
40:15grate that some
40:17of the spectators
40:17actually fall
40:18onto and get
40:19tangled up in.
40:21And because this
40:21metal grate is only
40:22a few feet away
40:23from the furnace
40:24they are slowly
40:26and agonizingly
40:28burning to death.
40:31Some survive the
40:32fall only to face
40:34another horror.
40:35The fuel pipes
40:37in the factory
40:37are severed
40:39and cut open
40:39by the falling
40:40debris from the
40:41roof causing
40:42a sprinkler-like
40:43effect of this
40:44burning hot oil
40:45to scatter all
40:46around the factory.
40:48Everyone in the
40:48stadium is so
40:49caught up in the
40:49game that it
40:51doesn't even
40:51register to them
40:52the mayhem
40:53that's happening
40:53just next door.
40:55Ultimately
40:56the event
40:57claims 23
40:58lives.
41:00All young men
41:01and hundreds
41:02more are injured.
41:03the 1900
41:05Thanksgiving Day
41:06accident goes
41:07down as the
41:08deadliest disaster
41:09in American
41:10sports history.
41:13Whether it's
41:14almost choking
41:14to death on
41:15the catch of
41:15the day or
41:17coming within
41:17an inch of
41:18complete decapitation
41:19via chainsaw
41:20these are the
41:21freak accidents
41:21that are so
41:22surprising.
41:23They are truly
41:24unbelievable.
