00:00The things I saw made impressions, I can never forget.
00:20I can't describe it. I can't say how it was.
00:25It was just terrible.
00:34A dream of being trapped on the ship with no means of escape.
00:43But I always wake up before the boat sinks.
00:55He told me that apparently we'd struck something.
01:07Iceberg!
01:08Deadhead!
01:11I didn't become alarmed.
01:18There was no danger, they said.
01:24I told her to come at once. We were sinking.
01:26I can imagine the chaos and the fear and the terror of finding water in your cabin and you're in the bowels of the ship.
01:37It makes me panic just thinking about it.
01:40The story of the Titanic is the human condition spread out, pinned on a board for us to examine.
01:47Then came the terrible cry.
01:51Women and children, women and children.
01:54Two men lifted me up and put me in a boat.
01:59It's these small decisions, these little butterfly effect moments that change the outcome.

02:47It was a terrible sight.
02:57Men swimming and sinking.
03:06I've been brought up to believe in a hell after death.
03:17For now, I think I went through a hell that night.
03:47I nipped along to have a look down the emergency staircase to gauge the speed the water was
04:14rising, that cold green water crawling its ghostly way.
04:26The electric lights shone under the surface with a weird effect.
04:33Sir Lightoller knows now things are getting more serious.
04:40He thought this thing could not go down and now he knows it could sink.
04:46This is a terrible shock for him.
04:48Captain Smith is at fault here.
04:54He has not informed his senior officers of what he has known for some time.
05:00It's very hard to know why Captain Smith did not give out the information to his most trusted command.
05:06Maybe it's important to keep this away to stop them panicking and to keep control.
05:12There are just ten standard lifeboats left on the ship, along with four collapsibles.
05:32There's 2,000 souls and more on board and only around 700 places.
05:39There's no rescue ship coming any time soon, so if you don't get in, you're gonna die.
05:45Keep moving up and down the deck, don't you?
06:00Lightoller is going to continue doing exactly what he's done before, but with even more fervour and rigidity, enforcing the plan.
06:08It's the only thing he can do.
06:10And children only.
06:15Charlotte Collier is just about holding herself together
06:18in her family unit, her husband Harvey
06:20and her little daughter Marjorie.
06:25Mr Lowe rushed among the passengers
06:30and ordered the women into the boats.
06:34Many of them followed him in a dazed kind of way.
06:40And others stayed with their men.
06:45A sailor caught Marjorie in his arms,
06:50tore her away from me and threw her into the boat.
06:57I was crying for my doll.
07:00Then two men lifted me up and put me in a boat.
07:06Marjorie! Marjorie!
07:09She was not even given a chance to tell her father goodbye.
07:16You too, a man, yelled,
07:19you're a woman.
07:21Take a seat in that boat or it will be too late.
07:25I heard my husband say,
07:30Go, Lottie, for God's sake, be brave and go.
07:37Go, God's sake, be brave and go!
07:38And saw my husband's back as he walked steadily down the deck
07:46and disappeared among the men.
07:50If they'd not wrenched Marjorie away from me,
07:54I wish I had gone with him.
08:06The coaches' deferential veneer is not there anymore.
08:11The officers will pull apart women from their men
08:15and make them go into the boats whether they want to or not.
08:19This is new in the course of the night and it's frightening.
08:22There's a really stark disadvantage
08:34facing third-class passengers from the beginning.
08:38They are stuck in the bowels of the ship
08:41trying to get to where the lifeboats are.
08:43I've been seasick the whole trip.
08:59All I wanted was to be left alone so I could lie down.
09:07Anna Heublom is a teenager from Finland.
09:10She's a Swedish speaker.
09:10A third of the stearage passengers on the Titanic
09:14were from Nordic countries.
09:16There were so many people who did not speak English.
09:18They spoke Spanish, Arabic, Swedish.
09:21Swedish is the second most spoken language.
09:25When the boat struck the 14th of April,
09:29which was my birthday, I was 18.
09:35I didn't become alarmed.
09:37I just couldn't believe that this wonderful ship
09:41could possibly be in trouble.
09:46There are 14 stewardesses in first class
09:49to help those passengers leave the ship.
09:53In third class, there's only one.
09:55There was no tunneling system or announcement
10:02of what was going on, of what to do.
10:05They had to work it out themselves.
10:06A crash woke me up.
10:27Nearly jolted me from my bed.
10:29I put on my trousers and shoes and got up.
10:40Eugene Daly is a 29-year-old textile worker
10:43from County Westmeath in Ireland.
10:46After years of saving, he's immigrating to America
10:49along with his cousin, Maggie,
10:52her friend, Bertha, and his beloved Irish pipes.
10:58The stewards came through and told the passengers
11:00that they shouldn't be frightened.
11:03There was no danger, they said.
11:08Everything was all right and that I might go back.
11:11The third class passengers don't know what's going on
11:22because they're not being told.
11:24And there's nothing worse than having an idea
11:26that something's really wrong
11:28but not knowing exactly what it is.
11:31Above deck, the first and second class passengers
11:34and the crew, they can all see
11:36there aren't enough boats left
11:38and there are hundreds of them on deck.
11:41I stood at the bulkhead with the other stewardesses.
11:49A ship's officer ordered us into the boat.
11:53Some live boats are only at half capacity.
11:56Now, there's fear everywhere
11:58so they're filling them up as quickly as they can.
12:04Looking along the length of the ship
12:07I noticed the forward part of her was lower now.
12:15Much lower.
12:16My heart stood still.
12:33You know, in the military
12:35this is what we talk about, triaging.
12:37This is a case of thinking
12:38how many people can we save at this point.
12:42There's only room for 800 people
12:43in the lifeboats that remain.
12:45So that's best-case scenario.
12:47But in crisis situations
12:49you're not getting the best-case scenario.
12:51Within the panic, the confusion.
12:55The boat was full now.
13:01As the boat was being lowered
13:03the ship's officer called
13:05Here, Miss Jessop
13:08Look after this baby.
13:15Someone had dumped it on the deck
13:18beside his feet.
13:23At this stage, Violet is handed a baby
13:26that has been sort of separated
13:28from their family
13:30or whoever was caring for them at that point.
13:33It's hard to fathom that.
13:34That panic beginning to spread
13:38it's making their circumstances worse.
13:41It's making everybody's chance
13:43of survival worse.
13:44But it's such a natural reaction.
13:46I could hear the commotion
14:07overhead increasing.
14:09I decided to go up
14:11even though I still felt very ill.
14:15I was fully clothed
14:17and I had a lifebelt.
14:20My railroad ticket to Tacoma
14:23and a small amount of money
14:24were sewed in a little bag
14:26and hung around my neck
14:27so that I couldn't lose it.
14:29I went down into the room
14:34where Maggie Daly
14:35and Bertha Mulvill-Hill were.
14:38The men and women
14:39in third class
14:40are separated
14:41so for Eugene to find
14:43Maggie and Bertha
14:44he has to cross
14:45from one end of the ship
14:46to another.
14:47No one is guiding them
14:48no one is saying
14:49this is the best way
14:50to get around the flooding
14:51they have to work
14:52it out themselves.
14:59Come with me.
15:01The ship is sinking.
15:06There's hundreds
15:07of third class passengers
15:08trying to navigate
15:09the warren
15:10of corridors
15:11hallways
15:12staircases
15:12and they're trying
15:14to get to a part
15:15of the ship
15:15the boat deck
15:16that they've never
15:17been allowed onto before.
15:18It's difficult to
15:21convey the size
15:23of a ship
15:23like the Titanic.
15:25It took me
15:2514 days
15:26before I could
15:28find my way
15:28from one part
15:29of that ship
15:30to another
15:30by the shortest route.
15:32Eugene,
15:33Maggie and Bertha
15:35must navigate up
15:36several decks
15:37to the boat deck.
15:39It's now
15:40a very challenging
15:40situation
15:41and the feeling
15:42of a loss of control
15:43on the part
15:44of the crew
15:44is getting stronger
15:45and stronger.
15:47It was about
15:47this time
15:48that the chief officer
15:49came over
15:50from the starboard side
15:51and asked
15:52did I know
15:52where the firearms were?
15:54I told the chief officer
15:55yes,
15:57come along
15:57and I'll get them for you.
15:58Come along
15:59and I'll get them for you.
16:02Drawing weapons
16:03is very unusual.
16:07The officers
16:08clearly were aware
16:09of how panic
16:10was setting in
16:11and order
16:12and discipline
16:13amongst people
16:14were falling apart.
16:15There were guns
16:18on board
16:18the Titanic
16:19like the lifeboats
16:21nobody expected
16:22to ever
16:23have to use them.
16:29Into the first officer's cabin
16:31we went
16:31the chief
16:32Murdoch
16:33the captain
16:33and myself.
16:36I hauled them out
16:38still in all their
16:40pristine newness
16:41and grease.
16:42here you are.
16:49I was going out
16:50when the chief officer
16:52shoved one of the revolvers
16:54into my hands
16:55with a handful
16:55of ammunition
16:56and said
16:57here you are
16:59you may need it.
17:01the fact of the matter
17:04is there are far
17:05more passengers
17:05than crew.
17:07British and American
17:08society at this time
17:10is hierarchical
17:11and it's rules based.
17:12People will do
17:13what they are told
17:14but not when their lives
17:16are at stake.
17:18This is what
17:18the officers fear.
17:19But you know
17:20Chekhov said
17:22you can't put a gun
17:23in the room
17:23and not use it.
17:24Third class passengers
17:40naturally gravitated
17:42towards the
17:42aftwell deck
17:43which is the outdoor
17:44space they've had
17:45use of
17:46but it is still
17:47three decks
17:48below the boat deck
17:49where the lifeboats are.
17:51There was
18:02a lot of
18:04confusion
18:05with people
18:06running around
18:07crying
18:08swearing
18:10and
18:10praying.
18:13Since I couldn't
18:14speak English
18:14I hardly knew
18:15what was happening.
18:19I had to push
18:20people apart
18:21to find a place
18:23to walk.
18:28She doesn't speak
18:30English
18:30there's no one
18:31experienced
18:32to advise her
18:33so she's working
18:34this all out
18:34with so much
18:36against her.
18:37There's a sea
18:38of passengers
18:39already gathered there
18:40so Eugene
18:41and Anna
18:42are joining
18:42this throng of people.
18:45I went up
18:45on deck
18:46people were
18:48running around.
18:50The Titanic
18:51being an
18:52immigrant ship
18:53must conform
18:54to American
18:55and British
18:56immigration laws
18:57and one of those
18:58laws is around
18:59quarantine.
19:00Maintaining
19:01steerage class
19:02passengers
19:03in areas separate
19:04from the first
19:05and second class
19:06passengers
19:06to stop the
19:08spread of disease.
19:09Before the third
19:10class passengers
19:11have even boarded
19:12Titanic
19:12they've had to be
19:13subjected to
19:14medical examinations.
19:16They're hemmed in
19:17by locked gates
19:18and these same gates
19:20that were meant
19:20to prevent ill health
19:21are now blocking
19:22their access
19:23to the lifeboats.
19:25Eugene's cousin
19:25Maggie
19:26tries to go back
19:27to her cabin
19:27but that corridor
19:29is under five foot
19:30of water.
19:32There's no chance
19:33she can make it
19:33and she turns back.
19:35All this time
19:36we knew that the water
19:38was coming up
19:38and up rapidly.
19:42To know that
19:43safety is on the
19:44other side
19:45of that locked gate
19:46it must make
19:47more than despair.
20:03The boat was
20:04practically full
20:06and there were
20:07no other women
20:09anywhere near it
20:10when
20:115th officer Lowe
20:13jumped in
20:14and ordered
20:15it lowered.
20:16a young lad
20:21hardly more
20:22than a schoolboy
20:23was standing
20:24close to the rail
20:25now
20:27realising
20:28he was to be
20:29left behind
20:30he leapt down
20:31into the boat
20:32and crawled
20:34under a seat
20:35but the officer
20:39dragged him
20:40to his feet
20:41and ordered him
20:42back onto
20:42the ship.
20:43we begged
20:48for his life
20:48please give him
20:49a chance
20:50the officer
20:54drew his
20:55revolver
20:56and thrust
20:57it
20:57into his face
20:59I gave you
21:0310 seconds
21:04to get back
21:05onto that ship
21:07before I blow
21:08your brains
21:08out
21:09the lad
21:13only begged
21:14harder
21:14my mother
21:18said
21:18I called out
21:19don't shoot
21:21the officer
21:28suddenly changed
21:30his tone
21:31he lowered
21:33his revolver
21:34and looked
21:37the boy
21:37squarely
21:38in the eyes
21:39for god's sake
21:43be a man
21:44we have got
21:45women
21:45and children
21:46for god's sake
21:47we have women
21:48and children
21:49here
21:49the little lad
21:50turned round
21:51and
21:52climbed back
21:53without a word
21:54he was not
22:00saved
22:00allow the boats
22:04to avoid
22:09another occurrence
22:10of that sort
22:10I fired my
22:11revolver
22:12as I was
22:13going down
22:14each deck
22:14because the
22:16boat wouldn't
22:17stand a sudden
22:17jerk
22:18she was loaded
22:19already with
22:20people and
22:20would not
22:21stand anymore
22:21actually drawing
22:27the gun shows
22:28that the ship's
22:29officers
22:29realised that
22:31things were
22:32very very
22:32desperate indeed
22:33and of course
22:34we did not
22:35have enough
22:35lifeboats
22:36for everybody
22:37on board
22:37there are
22:3810 lifeboats
22:39left
22:40on deck
22:41now
22:41and 1,960
22:44people still
22:45to save
22:45Titanic now
22:46was so low
22:47in the water
22:48that iconic
22:49areas like
22:50the grand
22:51staircase
22:51and some
22:52of the luxury
22:52staterooms
22:53were flooding
22:54there's no doubt
22:56at all
22:56that this was
22:57unstoppable
22:58it was merely
22:59a question
22:59of time
23:00phillips told me
23:14the wireless was
23:15growing weaker
23:15jack phillips has
23:21spent the last few
23:22hours trying to
23:23communicate with
23:24other wireless
23:25operators
23:26carpathia is
23:28sailing at full
23:29speed towards
23:30Titanic but
23:31she's still two
23:32hours away
23:33on the nearest ship
23:35the Californian
23:37nobody recognised
23:38or responded
23:39to the distress
23:40flares
23:41but phillips
23:42still believes
23:43that as long
23:44as he can get
23:44signals out
23:45he may be
23:46of some use
23:48but now
23:50the electricity
23:51is starting
23:52to fail
23:52then
23:55he does get
23:56a message
23:56from his
23:56sister ship
23:57Olympic
23:58but she
24:06seems not
24:06to understand
24:07at all
24:08what is
24:09happening
24:09to Titanic
24:10and thinks
24:10Titanic
24:11must be
24:12limping along
24:13sailing towards
24:13them
24:14the frustration
24:16here is
24:17now clear
24:18because the
24:18messages are
24:19not getting
24:19through
24:20for this
24:21young man
24:22in his
24:23mid-twenties
24:23I think
24:24this is the
24:25place of
24:25utmost distress
24:26right now
24:29it's clear
24:29on board
24:30ship
24:30that no
24:31rescue vessel
24:32is going
24:32to reach
24:33Titanic
24:34before she
24:35sings
24:35the third
24:44class passengers
24:45are at most
24:46risk at this
24:46moment
24:47there's the
24:48language
24:48difficulties
24:49there's
24:50probably a bit
24:50of aggression
24:51I think
24:51that's setting
24:52in annoyance
24:53frustration
24:54we had
24:57quite a number
24:59of hot-headed
25:00Italians
25:01and other people
25:02who got crazy
25:03and made for the
25:04stairs
25:04these men
25:06tried to rush
25:07the stairway
25:08pushing
25:09and crowding
25:10and pulling
25:10the women
25:11down
25:11at this moment
25:14we would expect
25:16the adrenaline
25:17to kick in
25:18the body
25:19wants to survive
25:20and it gives us
25:21some sort of
25:22innate choices
25:22you might fight
25:24your way to the
25:24front physically
25:25people might freeze
25:26where they're just
25:27stuck
25:28they're in terror
25:28they don't know
25:29what to do
25:29we also see people
25:31who are turning
25:32inward
25:33and that would be
25:34turning to God
25:34as well
25:35making the sign
25:35of the cross
25:36and so on
25:36the first class deck
25:39was higher up
25:40than the steerage deck
25:41and there were
25:42some steps leading
25:42up to it
25:43and a gate
25:44at the top
25:44of the steps
25:45they tried to
25:47keep us down
25:47at first
25:48on our steerage deck
25:49at the back
25:49of the ship
25:50they're trying
25:52to keep order
25:54but by doing so
25:56in such a chaotic
25:57way
25:57they probably
25:58contribute to
25:59a greater loss
26:00of life
26:00than they realised
26:02I can't say
26:06who they were
26:07I think they
26:08were sailors
26:08they didn't want
26:12us going up
26:12to the first
26:13class place
26:13at all
26:14even though
26:18there's no
26:18direct policy
26:19preventing
26:20third class
26:20passengers
26:21from accessing
26:22lifeboats
26:22it's clear
26:23from their
26:24testimony
26:24after the
26:25sinking
26:25that there
26:26was not
26:26a level
26:27playing field
26:27the third
26:29class were
26:29left
26:29marginalised
26:30and
26:31endangered
26:32by cruise
26:32actions
26:33there was
26:38no help
26:39of any
26:41kind
26:42to reach
26:42safety
26:43so
26:49time is
26:50ticking down
26:51the water's
26:51rising
26:52they're
26:53sandwiched
26:53in between
26:54the sea
26:55and the
26:56locked gate
26:56they're having
26:58to make
26:58life or death
26:59decisions
27:00in moments
27:01with very
27:02little information
27:03I got talking
27:08to a young
27:09Swedish girl
27:10returning to
27:12the United
27:12States
27:13she knew
27:16about an
27:18emergency
27:18stairway
27:19to where the
27:20lifeboats were
27:21anna's interesting
27:26because she's come
27:27from a different
27:28environment
27:28she's come
27:28from Finland
27:29where the
27:30social strata
27:31isn't quite as
27:33defined as it is
27:33in England
27:34at the time
27:34perhaps she has a
27:36little bit more
27:36leeway
27:37to not rely on
27:39following the
27:40authority figure's
27:41orders
27:41we climbed
27:43ladder
27:44up to the
27:45first class
27:46deck
27:46and then an
27:47officer
27:48saw me
27:50and dragged
27:52me
27:52up to the
27:53next deck
27:54we passed
28:00a window
28:01and we looked
28:03into a
28:04beautiful
28:04room
28:05the tables
28:07were so
28:07beautifully
28:08set
28:09the silver
28:11and
28:12and all
28:13the furniture
28:14the other
28:17girl
28:17she wanted
28:18to
28:18kick the
28:20window
28:20out
28:21and walk
28:22in
28:22and help
28:23ourselves
28:24I told her
28:28that they
28:28might make us
28:28pay for the
28:29broken window
28:30so
28:30we didn't
28:32there's some
28:36evidence that
28:37growing up in
28:37adverse situations
28:38actually gives you
28:39a kind of
28:40cognitive toolkit
28:41to be able to
28:42get through those
28:43situations
28:43all kinds of
28:44skills where
28:45you've needed to
28:46survive and
28:47depend on yourself
28:48and that
28:49translates really
28:50quite well to
28:50an emergency
28:51scenario
28:51the third class
28:53passengers have
28:53survived so many
28:54different challenges
28:55already
28:56they must have
29:03felt their
29:03confidence and
29:04trust in the
29:06crew and
29:07officers had
29:08gone
29:09I think these
29:10are people who
29:10are not taking
29:11no for an
29:11answer
29:12they couldn't
29:13keep them
29:14down
29:15gate was
29:23broken
29:23all the
29:26stearage
29:26passengers
29:26went up
29:27onto the
29:27first class
29:28deck
29:28they're going
29:29to take fate
29:30into their
29:30own hands
29:31and they will
29:32get to those
29:33boats
29:33in the same
29:35way that I
29:35think when
29:36officer low
29:36fired his
29:37gun
29:37he changed
29:38the terms
29:38by breaking
29:39the gate
29:39they changed
29:40the terms
29:40I rushed
29:45to the
29:47lifeboats
29:48there seemed
29:50hundreds of
29:51people around
29:52me
29:53half the
29:55lifeboats
29:56have already
29:56gone
29:57they're in
29:57the water
29:58there's only
29:59four lifeboats
29:59at this end
30:00of the ship
30:00and the others
30:01are hundreds
30:02of yards
30:03ahead
30:03seeing only
30:06four lifeboats
30:07available
30:07and nearly
30:082,000 people
30:09trying to get
30:10into them
30:10there is such
30:12panic in
30:13that crowd
30:13everywhere
30:17everybody was
30:18confused
30:19I saw a lot
30:21of people
30:22Catholics
30:24make the sign
30:26of the cross
30:27I had to
30:30step
30:31on many of
30:33these people
30:34to reach
30:36the side
30:37of the deck
30:37the crying
30:41of children
30:42and the
30:43screaming
30:43of a woman
30:44you know
30:45these are
30:45terrifying
30:46sounds
30:46that we
30:47are programmed
30:48to have
30:49a sort
30:49of visceral
30:49reaction
30:50to
30:51I remember
30:52from living
30:52through my
30:53trauma
30:53my wounding
30:54in Afghanistan
30:55sounds
30:56stay with
30:56you
30:57far more
30:58than sights
30:58that is a
30:59powerful thing
30:59for the senses
31:00to take
31:01on board
31:01and for
31:02ultimately
31:03you to
31:03then have
31:04to live
31:04with
31:04I
31:06tried
31:07to
31:07get into
31:09a lifeboat
31:10and I was
31:11pushed back
31:12it seemed
31:19as though
31:19I would
31:20go down
31:20with the ship
31:34ideas about
31:41self-control
31:42and stoicism
31:43and self-sacrifice
31:44are celebrated
31:46as forms
31:47of gentlemanliness
31:49as well
31:49as manliness
31:50these are
31:51the values
31:52that they've
31:52been told
31:53to hold
31:54to
31:54and it
31:56means
31:57putting
31:57yourself
31:58second
31:59that is
32:00the ideal
32:01as far
32:01as Edwardian
32:02society
32:02is concerned
32:03Bruce Ismay
32:07who is the
32:08managing director
32:08of the
32:09White Star Line
32:10his father
32:10had founded
32:11the White Star Line
32:12and the Titanic
32:14is basically
32:14his idea
32:15this is the
32:16crowning achievement
32:17of his career
32:18the creation
32:18of this amazing
32:20opulent ship
32:21and now
32:24he can see
32:25that it is all
32:26going
32:26to the bottom
32:28of the sea
32:28did you think
32:39it was in a
32:40very serious
32:40condition
32:41as time
32:43got on
32:43I did
32:44and that the
32:46ship was sinking
32:47I did
32:48I helped
32:52for nearly
32:52two hours
32:53as far
32:53as I can
32:54judge
32:54at the
32:55starboard
32:55boats
32:56helping women
32:57and children
32:57enter the
32:58boats
32:58and blurring
32:59them over
32:59the side
33:00I think
33:03the sense of
33:04responsibility
33:04for Bruce Ismay
33:05must have been
33:06huge
33:07and we see
33:08this in the
33:09fact that he
33:09spends time
33:10patrolling
33:11the boat deck
33:12putting people
33:14into boats
33:15instructing crew
33:16how to behave
33:17but he knows
33:19that there aren't
33:20enough
33:20lifeboats
33:21on board
33:21he knows
33:23by this point
33:23that there's
33:24no rescue ship
33:25coming anytime
33:26soon
33:27these lives
33:28are on
33:29his conscience
33:30the ship
33:41was
33:42listing heavily
33:44in the bow
33:46somebody gave
33:48me a push
33:49towards the boat
33:51and I got in
33:55that girl
33:56and I went
33:57together
33:58the lifeboat
34:03was so
34:04crowded
34:16when I got
34:19to the deck
34:20a lifeboat
34:20was hanging
34:21from the
34:21davits
34:22number 13
34:24boat
34:24it was pretty
34:27well filled
34:27when I got
34:28there
34:28the boat
34:32swainer knew
34:33me
34:33as I'd
34:35sailed with
34:35them
34:35and other
34:35ships
34:36before
34:36said to me
34:38you get on
34:38this boat
34:38and pull
34:39an oar
34:39Fred is in
34:44the lifeboat
34:44and because
34:46you know
34:46he's one of
34:47those strong
34:47enough to be
34:48able to row
34:48it
34:48and at this
34:49stage
34:49the crew
34:50is now
34:50starting to
34:51really fill
34:52the lifeboats
34:53so I took
34:55his orders
34:55and I got
34:57on and she
34:57swung from
34:57the davits
34:58we had
35:00women
35:00men
35:01and two
35:02little babies
35:03one two
35:05months old
35:06and the
35:07other ten
35:07months old
35:08there is no
35:11real order
35:12people are
35:13sitting on top
35:14of one another
35:14and you know
35:15you're sort of
35:15being crushed
35:16underneath this
35:17mass of people
35:17it's suspended
35:20by davits
35:21off the side
35:22of the ship
35:22at this point
35:23it's about
35:2418 metres
35:25above the water
35:26but every
35:27person that
35:28gets in
35:28adds that
35:29weight
35:30adds that
35:30movement
35:31adds that
35:31risk
35:32and so there
35:32has to be a
35:33point at which
35:33you say
35:33that's enough
35:34about three
35:37more people
35:37get in
35:38after I did
35:38and then the
35:40orders were
35:41given
35:41let no more
35:42on that boat
35:42or the falls
35:43will break
35:44that means
35:46looking into
35:47the whites
35:47of people's
35:48eyes and
35:48saying
35:49there's no
35:50more space
35:50the boat
36:06was being
36:06filled with
36:07women
36:07Maggie and
36:14Bertha got in
36:15and I got
36:17in
36:18the officer
36:24called me
36:25to go back
36:25but I got
36:26in
36:27life was
36:29sweet to me
36:30and
36:31I wanted
36:33to save
36:33myself
36:34it's the early
36:36hours of the
36:36morning
36:37the lifeboats
36:38are being
36:38filled to the
36:38broom now
36:39overfilled
36:40naturally
36:41so male
36:41passengers
36:42want to
36:42get in
36:43they want
36:43to be
36:44with their
36:44loved ones
36:44so they
36:44just want
36:45to save
36:45their lives
36:46as any
36:47of us
36:47would
36:47they told
36:50me to
36:50get out
36:51but I
36:52didn't
36:52stir
36:52then they
36:56got a hold
36:57of me
36:57and pulled
36:58me out
36:58Eugene's
37:01testimony
37:02makes me
37:02like him
37:03I think
37:04he's honest
37:04he's frank
37:05he's not
37:06trying to
37:07put a spin
37:08on his own
37:08behaviour
37:09or anyone
37:10else's
37:10I get
37:11the feeling
37:12of a real
37:13historical
37:13account
37:13in its
37:14Watson
37:14or
37:15attitude
37:15what's sad
37:17about this
37:17story
37:18is that
37:18most of
37:19those officers
37:20knew the
37:20people that
37:21they were
37:21turning away
37:22in the sense
37:23that they
37:23were from
37:23the same
37:24class
37:24the same
37:25kind
37:25well
37:27if I
37:28didn't
37:29save
37:29myself
37:30at least
37:32I saved
37:32the two
37:33girls
37:33Captain
37:58Smith had
37:59severe doubts
38:00about whether
38:00a fully
38:01laden
38:02lifeboat
38:02could be
38:03lowered
38:03properly
38:04he knew
38:05there were
38:05a lot
38:05of people
38:05waiting
38:06down
38:06at the
38:07gangway
38:07doors
38:08to get
38:08into
38:09boats
38:09and therefore
38:10he thought
38:10how can I
38:11manage to
38:11get these
38:12boats full
38:13how can I
38:14save
38:14as many
38:15of the
38:15people
38:16whose lives
38:16I'm
38:16responsible
38:17for
38:17as is
38:18possible
38:19the
38:22captain
38:22came
38:23and said
38:23Mr.
38:23Boxall
38:24you go
38:24away
38:24in that
38:24boat
38:25pointing
38:26to
38:26boat
38:26number
38:27two
38:27I
38:31tumbled
38:32into
38:32this
38:32lifeboat
38:32and started
38:33to lower
38:33her
38:34and the
38:35captain
38:35looked over
38:36and told
38:36me
38:36go round
38:37to the
38:37starboard
38:38side
38:38which was
38:41practically
38:42on the
38:42opposite

39:01around
39:01there
39:01there was

39:11standing up
39:12and there
39:13was this

47:04had a

47:05and then I
47:08thought how cold
47:08the water was
47:09I remembered
47:10I remembered
47:10I had some boots
47:11and I put
47:12those on
47:12and an extra
47:13jacket
47:13we picked up
47:14the olympic

47:15we were sinking
47:16by the head

47:17Phillips
47:20is leading
47:21from the front
47:22he's a
47:23hero
47:23it's easier
47:25to understand
47:26fear
47:28and self
47:29interest
47:30than it is
47:31to understand
47:32sacrifice
47:34and heroism
47:35especially now
47:37in our world
47:37we think
47:38that everything
47:39is about
47:39greed
47:40and
47:40me first
47:41that generation
47:43did not
47:44as Phillips
47:45was sending
47:46the message
47:46I strapped
47:47the life belt
47:47to his back
47:48I'd already
47:49put on his
47:50overcoat
47:50wondered if I
47:51could get him
47:52into his boots
47:52just at that
47:54moment
47:54the captain
47:55came into
47:56the cabin
47:56and said
47:58men you have
47:59done your
47:59full duty
48:00you can do
48:01no more
48:01abandon your
48:03cabin
48:03now is
48:05every man
48:05for himself
48:06I release you
48:08every man
48:11for himself
48:12now
48:12in the conflicts
48:13I trained for
48:14it's unimaginable
48:15that we would
48:15ever find ourselves
48:16in a circumstance
48:16where it was
48:17every man
48:18for themselves
48:18all of the order
48:19has been lost
48:20and actually
48:21trying to
48:22maintain that
48:23order
48:23whether it's
48:24you know
48:25pointing a gun
48:26at a crowd
48:26or you know
48:28screaming at the
48:29top of your voice
48:29all you're doing
48:30in that circumstance
48:31is wasting energy
48:32the last of the
48:47hard-hulled
48:48lifeboats
48:49have been
48:49dispatched
48:50but there is
48:51still
48:51two
48:52collapsible
48:53lifeboats
48:54left on the
48:54boat deck
48:55they're a little
48:56bit more flimsy
48:57but they still
48:58are a lifeline
48:59there was some
49:02disturbance
49:03loading the last
49:04two forward
49:05boats
49:05a large crowd
49:08of men
49:09were pressing
49:09to get into them
49:10though there were
49:11many crew
49:12and men
49:13lined up with
49:14apparently
49:15not a thought
49:16at attempting
49:16to board
49:17the boats
49:18without
49:18orders
49:19i saw

50:08in conjunction
50:09with these
50:09shipbuilders
50:10when you
50:12got into

50:13you thought
50:13that the
50:14titanic
50:14was sinking

50:17know
50:17that there
50:17were some
50:18hundreds
50:18of people
50:18on that

50:37your life
50:37to every
50:38other person

50:44deepest
50:45care
50:45i'm
50:47sure
50:47i did
50:47nothing
50:48that i
50:48shouldn't
50:48have
50:48done
50:49my
50:50conscience
50:51is
50:51clear

51:26comes from
51:27a class
51:28of society
51:29who
51:30believes
51:31that they
51:32have
51:32everything
51:32they have

51:36i mean
51:37it's like
51:37being a
51:37billionaire
51:38today
51:38in a
51:39world
51:39of
51:39hungry
51:40people
51:40the
51:41only way
51:41you can

51:45in
51:45some
51:46way
51:46and
51:47so
51:48i think
51:49that
51:49bruce
51:50ismay
51:50believes
51:51contrary
51:53to all
51:54rational

51:58even
51:58though
51:59he
