Needing a specific smooch, turning down a hairpiece, and more unusual actor demands.
Transcript
00:00Putting your foot down when it pertains to the wearing of a specific hairpiece,
00:04feeling the need to put the rest of your castmates through airborne hell for a project,
00:08or even going out of your way to plant a smooch on, um, yourself,
00:12all undoubtedly qualify as slightly to seriously strange recent movie set occurrences.
00:18So with that in mind, I'm Gareth from WhatCulture.com
00:20and here are 10 unusual demands made by actors on recent movies.
00:25Number 10. Leonardo DiCaprio didn't want the world to see naked Meryl Streep.
00:29Don't look up.
00:29The iconic Meryl Streep has more than earned her place among the greats
00:33and the respect of her many colleagues over the years.
00:35However, it was due to the sheer reverence Leonardo DiCaprio had for the record-setting 21-time Academy Award nominee
00:41that a rather raunchy and jaw-dropping scene in Adam McKay's recent end-of-the-world comedy hit Don't Look Up
00:47was surprisingly deemed somewhat unnecessary by the fellow icon.
00:51The Oscar-winning star of the flick went out of his way to push back against the inclusion of Streep's President Orleans,
00:57boasting a lower-back tattoo and strutting around naked in the film's mid-credits stinger,
01:01despite the fact that it was actually a Bronte Rock.
01:04Number 9. Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst refuse to speak.
01:08The Power of the Dog
01:08Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst's fierce commitment to their roles of Phil Burbank and Rose Gordon, respectively,
01:14in Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog certainly did not go unnoticed.
01:18And while the same could not have been said for Cumberbatch himself,
01:22with the Doctor Strange actor infamously holding back on showers for a spell,
01:25the film's two leading lights actually went to rather extreme lengths
01:28to ensure they didn't catch too many glimpses of one another over the course of the shoot.
01:33Explaining to NME his reasoning for largely ignoring Dunst Gordon whilst filming,
01:37Cumberbatch would note,
01:38I didn't want to be really mean to Kirsten,
01:40but I needed to stay in character,
01:42so I didn't speak to her on set.
01:44She was the same,
01:45we were the negative to each other's positive,
01:47we were repelled by each other.
01:49Number 8. Nicholas Cage wants to kiss himself,
01:51the unbearable weight of massive talent.
01:53Any film boasting the one and only Nicholas Cage,
01:56playing a fictionalised version of himself at the centre of an action-packed comedy tale,
02:00which focuses on all things Cage,
02:02was always destined to be an utterly balmy affair.
02:05And sure enough, with this Nick Cage variant of the man behind the moniker,
02:08routinely finding himself at odds with his younger,
02:11much more rebellious inner self throughout Tom Gormickon's flicks,
02:14coming during a scene involving Cage's on-screen character bickering with his younger Nicky self,
02:19Gormickon would reveal to IndieWire that the massive talent himself
02:22pulled him to one side before the shooting of the scene,
02:25and declared,
02:26Guys, I have an idea, I'll French kiss myself.
02:29This being in the peak of the pandemic,
02:30the director was tasked with figuring out how to pull this off without getting anyone sick.
02:35But when Nick Cage requests to plant a smacker on his inner cage,
02:38you get this man a stunderbolt.
02:40Number 7, Jared Leto needs a crutch, Morbius.
02:43Jared Leto was at it again when it was time to mob up for his most recent attempt
02:46at making a splash in the super pool,
02:48with the leading vampire tasked with convincingly portraying a character
02:52suffering from a rare blood disease at points in Morbius.
02:55On top of refusing to break the character of Dr. Michael Morbius over the course of shooting,
02:59Leto was said to have insisted on using fake crutches to move around set in between takes.
03:04Literally pushed to his limit due to said mode of transport largely delaying his shoot,
03:09director Daniel Espinoza would eventually tell Up Rocks
03:11that he was forced to get someone to dump the actor in a wheelchair
03:14whenever he required the bathroom as a way of speeding up the overall process.
03:18Yet all of the committed hobbling in the world
03:20couldn't save this mob in time from disaster on two separate occasions,
03:24with Espinoza likely being saved from any further Leto-induced delays
03:27thanks to the film's deeply underwhelming box office and critical performance.
03:316. The Rock doesn't want a padded suit, Black Adam
03:35When the time called for Dwayne Johnson to finally bulldoze his way into the DCEU as Black Adam,
03:40you had to know that the former WWE star would again put his everything
03:43into getting into typically ridiculous shape.
03:46But in a development that most definitely did not go down too well
03:49with the great one on the back of said grueling workout regime,
03:52the talented costume designers behind the incoming Warner Bros. feature
03:55pitched a suit which came with the usually accepted levels of additional super padding.
03:59Not content with all his hard graft being masked by the costume,
04:03and openly declaring he effing hate this costume,
04:06The Rock would tell Total Film,
04:08Everything was padded, so they immediately started tearing and cutting and ripping.
04:12When I put that costume on the second time with no padding,
04:15just cut in a way where it was enhancing the work that I had put in,
04:18I felt, I'm Black Adam.
04:20Whether or not coming into the flick in super shape will be enough to thoroughly change
04:23the hierarchy of power in the DCEU, though, remains to be seen.
04:27Number 5, Sandra Bullock's No Asshole Policy, The Lost City.
04:31Don't be an A-hole is probably the simplest yet easily forgotten unwritten rule
04:35when it comes to creating a pleasant and productive working environment.
04:39When it comes to working alongside Academy Award winning actor
04:41and prolific producer Sandra Bullock, however,
04:44said rule is anything but unwritten.
04:46It's actually something of a law that will see a cast or crew member
04:49giving their marching orders should they choose to break it.
04:51During an interview alongside fellow The Lost City star Daniel Radcliffe
04:55with Australia's The Project TV show,
04:57Bullock would note how she is an advocate of the no-a-hole policy
05:00when it comes to the sets under her watch.
05:03Going further, the Loretta Sage actor would even reveal
05:05that we had a couple of them and they went home.
05:08And when assuming that her fellow iconic co-star Brad Pitt
05:10must have passed said strict test,
05:13Bullock would cheekily respond to her interviewer by joking,
05:15well, I don't know about that, charming.
05:17Number 4, Tom Holland refused to wear a wig,
05:20Spider-Man No Way Home.
05:21While the perks that come with becoming a part of the sprawling
05:24Marvel Cinematic Universe no doubt outweigh the few negatives,
05:27that still hasn't stopped the odd superhero actor
05:29from putting their foot down,
05:31when faced with a particularly frustrating demand from the super studio.
05:34In the case of Spider-Man star Tom Holland,
05:37said annoying requests came in the form of his hairstyle
05:39coming into his most recent spell of web-slinging in No Way Home,
05:42with the actor being put in an awkward position
05:44on the back of changing up his Wii for Uncharted.
05:47As the British Peter Parker actor would reveal to Esquire,
05:50his cooler Nathan Drake's styling initially wasn't deemed suitable
05:53for the much nerdier Marvel personality.
05:56But upon being given a strange wig that was just around the sides,
06:00Holland decided to push back as an actor for the first time in his life.
06:03I'm not effing wearing that wig,
06:04I'm going to have shorter hair and you're going to have to deal with it,
06:08were Holland's unwavering orders.
06:09So all of Marvel's additional surreal side-fuzz wig work
06:12ultimately went to waste.
06:14Number 3, Paul Dano needs 200 takes, The Batman.
06:17There's nothing wrong with being something of a perfectionist,
06:20but there's proofreading an important document a few more times
06:23just to be safe before clicking send,
06:25and then there's requesting to perform a scene a whopping 200 times
06:29in the pursuit of nailing a cinematic performance.
06:32According to the Batman director Matt Reeves,
06:34that's roughly how many takes it took for his chosen Riddler, Paul Dano,
06:37to deliver the goods in one particular scene
06:39in his recent version of All Things Gotham.
06:42As revealed in a Hollywood Reporter piece on the Batman central antagonist,
06:45Dano would routinely request another chance
06:48to bring a different variation of his consistently captivating performance
06:51to the table,
06:52while shooting a scene depicting the Riddler conversing
06:54with Robert Pattinson's bats on a phone through video chat.
06:57But far from being driven mad by the relentless thespian though,
07:01Reeves would confess how he admired how he was so inventive and creative,
07:04whilst also noting how he's also very critical of himself.
07:07That's one way of putting it.
07:08Number 2, Anya Taylor-Joy's idea of self-defense, The North Man.
07:12Of the many shocking and deeply unexpected beats that can be found
07:16raging through Robert Eggers' recent North Man epic,
07:19arguably the most unsettling of the lot,
07:21came in a moment completely devoid of any violent Vikings
07:24bulldozing through a village with an axe in hand.
07:26With Anya Taylor-Joy's augur of the Birch Forest
07:29faced with the disturbing prospect of being raped by a despicable male,
07:33the fierce Slavic sorceress resorts to sticking her hand between her legs
07:37and wiping her menstrual blood on the potential attacker.
07:39Yep, it happens.
07:41Far from being a part of the script from the get-go, however,
07:43Eggers would later reveal to Vanity Fair
07:45that this was actually a moment straight from the mind of the actor herself.
07:49And when pressed on summing up the effectiveness
07:51of this shocking form of self-defense
07:53within his frequently gritty and savage Viking drama,
07:56the visionary director would simply claim,
07:58it was great.
07:59With Eggers and cinematographer Jaren Blask being famed
08:02for their strict process of largely sticking to pre-planned storyboards,
08:05the former's willingness to take on Taylor-Joy's inspired suggestions
08:09and likely change up the original plans for the scene
08:11tells you all you need to know
08:13about how much the director trusted his freakishly talented stare.
08:161. Tom Cruise's Need for Flight School and No CGI
08:20Top Gun Maverick
08:21Tom Cruise's need for his co-stars to feel the genuine speed
08:25undoubtedly paved the way for arguably the greatest legacy sequel to date.
08:29Designing his very own all-encompassing aviation training
08:31for all the actors according to Phoenix actor Monica Barbero,
08:35producer Jerry Bruckheimer would also note
08:37in a behind-the-scenes look at Top Gun Maverick
08:39that the stars were put through three months of grueling training,
08:43with everything from being aboard jets at high speed
08:45to a challenging underwater program being a part of the process.
08:48The filmmakers' commitment to throwing the likes of Miles Teller and the gang
08:51into the jet-fueled reality of the situation
08:53no doubt stem from Cruise's initial demand
08:56when agreeing to return to the role of Maverick.
08:58In short, as Cruise would reveal to Empire later down the road,
09:01after years of wondering how in the hell this sequel could ever be achieved,
09:04I'll do it if, meaning I'm not going to do the CGI stuff.
09:09In the end, Cruise and co. undoubtedly prove their still life
09:11in the practical side of big-screen moviemaking yet,
09:14with Maverick now sitting as the star's most successful box office endeavor to date.
09:19What a ride!
09:20And that's our list.
