00:00A LinkedIn post by a Bengaluru entrepreneur has reignited debate over India's tax system.
00:06Rohit Shroff, partner at Aflok Group, said he plans to leave India by 2026
00:11after paying nearly 4 crore rupees in GST and income tax over the last year.
00:17In his post, he claimed that tax-compliant citizens are treated with suspicion,
00:22despite only 4-5% of Indians paying income tax.
00:26He wrote that constant notices, scrutiny and complex compliance discourage honest businesses,
00:32adding that growth is penalised, not rewarded.
00:36However, Shroff clarified that his post was not about leaving India,
00:40but about what he called systemic tax harassment of compliant taxpayers.
00:45He said entrepreneurs feel unfairly targeted, while a large section remains outside the tax net.
00:50His remarks echo wider concerns.
00:53A July 2025 CNBC report said 1 in 5 ultra-high net worth Indians plans to move abroad,
01:01while the MEA told Parliament that over 9 lakh people have renounced Indian citizenship since 2020.
01:09Experts say the issue goes beyond tax rates,
01:12pointing to retrospective notices and a hostile regulatory environment.
01:16The debate now raises questions about India's ease of doing business
01:28as it aims to become a global investment hub.
