00:00Yippee-ki-yay, strongman lovers, and welcome everybody to the Wild Wild West.
00:29This year, the SPD World's Strongest Man is back in Sacramento, California, in the original Gold Rush City, where we've got something special in prospect.
00:3825 men bringing the biggest of big guns to a shootout in the sun, and amongst them, the duo who've dominated this sport so far this decade.
00:46Hooper, Stoltman, this town ain't big enough for the both of them.
00:52The thing is, I have beat Tom the last five times that I've faced him in various shows.
00:58For me, I'm not ready to bother about what he does now. I'm here for myself, myself only. I'm not here to make friends, I'm here to battle.
01:06I have a very consistent history of getting the best of Tom.
01:09It's not me versus who, but I think it's me versus all 24.
01:13The World's Strongest Man title this year is likely to go home to Canada or to Scotland, and only time can tell.
01:19Well, here we are then with Eddie Hall, 2017 World's Strongest Man.
01:31Eddie, first of all, the big question here, who have you got, Tom or Mitchell?
01:34Oh, I'm going to have to sit on the fence this year. The two phenomenal athletes both won it. I don't want to say right now.
01:40It's not just those two either, is it? Because this is an incredibly stacked field we've got this year.
01:44Any one of the 25 athletes here could make the final.
01:47Yeah, and of the 25, 16 have made the final, which is...
01:51Previously?
01:51Yes. So the field is super high.
01:54Well, before we get the action underway, just to mention a major change to the format that's taking place this year.
02:00The old days of a points reset after the group stage are over.
02:03Now, as of this year, everything that the 10 finalists do from the very first event in the heats is going to count towards their final placings.
02:11What's that going to mean, Eddie?
02:12Well, it means a lot. I mean, from the athletes' point of view, it makes it so much harder.
02:17It means they've got to go 100% from the get-go.
02:19In the past, they would breeze through the heats, do as little as they possibly could to conserve their energy for the final.
02:26Now, they've got to give 100%.
02:28And over the 10 events versus the heats in the finals, that is a lot to ask out of these athletes.
02:35Qualifying group one stands and ready to introduce them.
02:37Let's welcome our commentators, Colin Bryce, and first, Danny Wallace.
02:41Well, thanks, James. Thanks, Eddie.
02:43Here we go, then, Colin Bryce. World's strongest man begins.
02:45Oh, yeah. I'm excited for this one.
02:47With the format changes, this should be an out-and-out gunfight.
02:50So, who have we got?
02:51Well, they call him the Mexican Eddie Hall, Austin Andrade.
02:55And Big Thomas Evans from the USA, the strength and conditioning coach from North Carolina.
03:03From South Africa, Jaco Schoonwinkel, and who will be Schoonwinkled this year?
03:08The Scottish titan, Big Tom Stoltman, back once again to hold his title.
03:13And with the voice of an angel, Australia's singing strongman, Eddie Williams.
03:17So, those are our strongmen for group one.
03:22We're moving to event one, the loading race.
03:25Well, this is all about sandbags, and it's a medley.
03:27You have to carry them down the course, 75 seconds.
03:30And as you'll see, you have to load them into the back of these Cybertrucks.
03:34So, our first pair, elegantly take their places from South Africa.
03:44Fifth generation farmer, Jaco Schoonwinkel, up against, from North Carolina, Thomas Evans.
03:5775 seconds.
03:58They've got to load as many of these as they can in the back of that truck.
04:00Yes, indeed.
04:03If they do all four, though, they'll get a finishing time.
04:06And, well, good chuck there from Tom Evans.
04:10The further you put them down, the easier it is to get the next one and the next one on.
04:13As I said, four in total.
04:15Schoonwinkel just in the lead at the moment.
04:17Oh, he slipped there, though.
04:19That was a big mistake there from Schoonwinkel, allowing Evans to edge ahead.
04:25There it goes.
04:26Two very different techniques, Colin.
04:28Yeah, onto the shoulder technique.
04:29Better for running with.
04:31Harder to throw up to the shoulder, though.
04:33And it's much easier to pick up the way Schoonwinkel's doing,
04:36but it starts to really destroy the arms and hamstrings as you move with it.
04:40It's a very awkward sack to carry.
04:44The shield shakes, but Evans making good work of it.
04:48Well ahead of Schoonwinkel.
04:50Yeah, look at that.
04:51Under 50 seconds.
04:52Both of them.
04:53Schoonwinkel was catching again, though.
04:55So, a good time for him, too.
04:56Let's take a look at this, Danny.
04:58The last one, the shield shape.
05:01It's so awkward.
05:03It's quite slippy, the material as well.
05:05But both of them finishing.
05:06The time of 48.58.
05:08Let's hear it from...
05:09Well, sub 50 seconds, and he's delighted.
05:11All four in 48.58 for the American.
05:14And Schoonwinkel.
05:17And Schoonwinkel.
05:19Well, currently in second, but then...
05:21The building two.
05:22Four in 50.34.
05:25That's very true.
05:26I think these will be solid times.
05:28Big Tom, though, with those long legs of his.
05:31Stands over 6'7".
05:33He should chew up the ground.
05:35Austin Andrade.
05:37So, we've already called him the Mexican Eddie Hall.
05:40Also known as Smash.
05:42Up against, well, three-time world's strongest man.
05:47Tom Stoltman.
05:48Tom Stoltman!
05:51He said that.
05:53A lot of Scots have made the chip over to Sacramento.
05:57Very proud of Tom.
05:58And he starts his defense of the title right here.
06:03And he's great at this kind of event normally.
06:06Looking good so far.
06:08He is the most successful British strongman of all time.
06:12And this is why.
06:14He's shocked by that sack from a couple of meters away.
06:21Goodness me.
06:22The breathing like a steam train.
06:23He's already on to the final sack.
06:27The only fear is he gasses out here and it slips out his hands.
06:30He's gone at it really hard.
06:31But so far, so good.
06:33Around about 46 seconds to beat.
06:36Now he's going to beat it by a comfortable margin.
06:39Goodness me.
06:39A great time for Tom Stoltman.
06:44As Austin Andrade gets a little bit of encouragement from the mighty Scott.
06:48He's just pointing that way.
06:50I think he knew.
06:52There it is.
06:56Just put it over there, mate.
06:59Thank you, Danny.
07:00Yes.
07:01Words of encouragement from Tom, who did that very well indeed.
07:06Well, Austin Andrade.
07:0853.33.
07:10Not delighted with that.
07:13But Tom Stoltman.
07:15Takes this kind of thing in his stride.
07:1738.71.
07:18Tom enjoying some fast times.
07:22He's taken the lead in the loading medley.
07:24But event one isn't over until the singing strongman does his thing.
07:28It's Eddie Williams when we return on the SPD World's Strongest Man.
07:32Welcome back to Sacramento.
07:45It's the opening event of this year's competition, the loading medley.
07:48Tom Stoltman's performance has left Eddie Williams with loads to do.
07:52Can he take top spot?
07:53Over to Colin and Danny.
07:54In lane number one.
07:56Well, thank you, James.
07:57Representing Australia.
07:57Now, the Australian Eddie Williams wants his first final, Colin.
08:03Yes, he's good enough to do it.
08:06But he's got to go solo here.
08:08He's running on his own.
08:09There's only five in each heat.
08:11But he has a good time to chase in Tom Stoltman's 38 seconds.
08:16And he looks quick head.
08:18Well, this is a very determined performance so far from Eddie Williams.
08:22Look at the speed on him.
08:26He used to be a rugby player.
08:27Imagine him trying to tackle him.
08:30Unbelievable.
08:31Now then, 25 seconds for three.
08:33This is on course to me.
08:35Oh, slowing up a little bit.
08:37Yeah, I think he may have overdone it on that previous run.
08:41Or is he just making sure?
08:43He's been getting better and better since we first saw him here in 2019.
08:48I'm not sure if it was a grimace or a smile.
08:50But he's going to beat Andrade.
08:52He's going to beat Skunwinkle and Evans.
08:58The singing arrival only to his dancing.
09:03All four on.
09:05And there you go.
09:06The time.
09:07Second best.
09:07The singing strongman, Eddie Williams.
09:09So moving into seconds with that.
09:12Four in 44.7.
09:14Eddie Williams.
09:16As we see on the board.
09:18But the defending champion, Tom Stoltman.
09:21A full six seconds ahead of him.
09:24And it all counts.
09:25Tom is with Michelle now.
09:27Tom, cracking start to the competition.
09:29Yeah, I need to set a marker.
09:30It's not me versus four other people.
09:32It's me versus 24.
09:33So I put a marker down and let's see what happens.
09:35But I'm happy with that time.
09:36Great marker.
09:37Now, Tom, you've also made some changes to your backroom staff.
09:40Let me ask you.
09:41Is this the best version of Tom Stoltman that we're going to see?
09:45Yeah, that was probably my fastest loading time.
09:46And I'm down 10k from last year.
09:49Got a new coach.
09:50Mentally, I'm much in a better space now as well.
09:52And yeah, I feel great.
09:53That was a nice stretch of the legs today.
09:56So that was a good event to start.
09:57How does it feel being back in Sacramento?
09:59I mean, you must have fond memories here winning twice over.
10:03Yeah, even standing here, you know, I remember loading the last stretch.
10:05Stonehenge, Brian Shaw.
10:06But yeah, it's unbelievable being back here.
10:08And hopefully I can keep that streak going.
10:09Look forward to seeing you in the next event.
10:11Thank you very much, Stuart.
10:15So our reigning champion, the fastest of putting the sacks down in Sacktown.
10:20Fully six seconds quicker than the nearest man, Aidy Williams.
10:23And 15 faster than the man in last place, the rather tardy, Austin Andrade.
10:28Up next, it's event two, which is deadlift for reps.
10:32And the man here with the biggest rep in deadlift, I lift half a ton, Eddie Hall.
10:36Eddie, talk us through this.
10:38It's 350 kilos and 60 seconds to do as many lifts as you can.
10:41Yeah, 350 kilos, which is a lot of weight.
10:44It's a very stiff bar, which makes it a lot harder to pull from the floor.
10:48And also these gloves landing on rubber, they're going to be bouncing around.
10:50And it really pulls the guy's center of gravity off a lot.
10:54This kind of event, who does it favor from our heat?
10:57It really favors the bigger, slower, more powerful athletes.
11:01You find the ones that pull it really fast off the floor, really struggle with this.
11:04But everyone in this group is pretty much big, slow and powerful.
11:08Okay.
11:08Let's see how it goes.
11:09Deadlift for rep with Colin and Danny.
11:11Well, thanks, James.
11:13Thanks, Eddie.
11:14And first up, after a disappointing first event, Mexico's Austin Andrade.
11:20We are expecting big things here.
11:22He's a member of the £1,000 club.
11:25That's what he can lift, not what it costs to join.
11:28Yes, it's a very small club indeed.
11:33Over 453.5 kilograms, he's deadlifted.
11:37And he hasn't done it that long ago either.
11:39So he is top strong.
11:41And right now, three reps down, looking very good indeed.
11:48No signs of slowing, is there?
11:50Oh, maybe I spoke too soon there, Colin.
11:55That's a sign of slowing.
11:57I don't think anyone's going to be pulling for the full time period, that's for sure.
12:01It's almost redundant, a time limit in this kind of event.
12:07He's just a little bit dizzy, I think.
12:08But he might be worth one more if he can recover in the next five or ten seconds.
12:12He absolutely knows he needs at least one more.
12:17It's setting those markers, but that's it.
12:21I thought that might be too much for Austin Andrade.
12:24Well, you know, throw into the calculator just the sheer heat of being in Sacramento.
12:29His body weight, you can see he's lashing with sweat.
12:33Ladies and gentlemen, show your appreciation.
12:35And the doctor's got the oxygen out here.
12:37That tight suit doesn't make it any easier either to breathe.
12:45You know what it's like in a deadlift suit, Danny?
12:47Yes, I'm wearing one now.
12:49We'll move on then to the American, Thomas Evans.
13:00Love the crowd behind him.
13:03My goodness me, you talk about the heat.
13:05He's got a sweat on, he only just looks at the deadlift.
13:11And Schoonwinkel, used to the farms of South Africa, of course, in this kind of heat.
13:18Yes, I think Tom Evans is probably the man in better condition at the moment.
13:27Schoonwinkel didn't have a particularly great season.
13:29He's still recovering from an ACL injury from a couple of years ago, but he always surprises Schoonwinkel.
13:36It was only a few years ago he beat Brian Shaw in a heat at World's Strongest Man as a relative unknown.
13:42Yes, he kind of came from nowhere, didn't he?
13:45Yeah, it became a verb to be Schoonwinkel.
13:47It did.
13:50Well, he Schoonwinkel himself.
13:51Look at that, the blood coming out of his nose now from the sheer strain.
13:55He's got to lock it out.
13:56Neither of them locked that one out.
13:58So neither gets the seventh rep.
14:00Goodness me.
14:01What a battle it was though for that seventh.
14:03Which, as you say, ultimately they both lost.
14:07I think it was a fair call though.
14:10So that's six for Evans.
14:13And six for Schoonwinkel.
14:16He's not looking as prettiest.
14:18No, the battle for the seventh there really did cost him a lot.
14:21A lot more than Evans' effort anyway.
14:24Look at this, he gets stuck on the knees.
14:26Sarts just to try and jack it up his thighs a little bit.
14:29But really not getting much purchase on that at all.
14:34And it was never locked out.
14:37We move on then to the Australian Eddie Williams.
14:41Up against the intimidating sight of Tom Stoltman.
14:49Tom Stoltman.
14:50Tom, very good at reps normally, Tom.
14:53It's a huge max deadlift.
14:55Eddie, well, we've seen in the past he struggles a bit with static.
15:00But he's worked very hard at it.
15:03So let's see where he's at.
15:09Tom, he's got a long way to go.
15:10But he's got plenty of power to do it.
15:15Eddie is going to want to match Stoltman lift for lift.
15:19Pulling very slowly, Tom.
15:22But that's the way to do it with this thick, solid bar.
15:25No point in jerking at it.
15:27Just as Eddie Hall said in the opener.
15:30My goodness, Eddie Williams is matching him.
15:33This is extraordinary.
15:36Oh, not just matching.
15:39Could he?
15:41Yes.
15:41Oh, yes, he gave it to him.
15:44He locked it out.
15:46Well, can Stoltman do the same?
15:49Also, yes.
15:51That may be enough for both men.
15:53Yeah, a little glance just to see what Eddie's doing.
15:57Eddie Williams.
15:58I mean, that's a good result for Tom Stoltman, but he was pushed.
16:02Yeah, Williams gave him something to think about there.
16:06Andrade, I think, acted as a warning.
16:07I'm stunned, really.
16:10I really am.
16:10But his first rep didn't look that good either, Eddie Williams.
16:13Not much better than his seventh.
16:15He really ground them out and Tom was forced to fight.
16:19Well, head ref, Magnus Ver Magnussen, four-time World's Strongest Man,
16:22shaking Eddie's hand there.
16:24A blessing from the Pope.
16:26Just as Eddie Hall said, all of these men putting in a big performance.
16:30Seven for the top two.
16:31And Eddie Williams is with Michelle now.
16:35Eddie, amazing performance there.
16:37Seven reps.
16:38How are you feeling?
16:39That's a massive improvement.
16:41Just finished an event.
16:42I'm still managing to be able to talk, so, yeah.
16:46It's very impressive.
16:47Just watching that event, I mean, it is clearly not easy.
16:51But for you being up against the current World's Strongest Man,
16:54I mean, does that provide you with a bit of extra motivation?
16:58Every year.
16:59Fun fact.
17:00I've had a Stoltman in my group the last four years.
17:04So, it shows what they say about you hang out with strong people, you get stronger.
17:12It's clearly working.
17:13And we all know you, Eddie, as being the singing strong man.
17:16You're the life and soul of the party.
17:18It's joyful to be around you.
17:20But how important is it also for you to show that you can deliver
17:23and just can compete against the best of them?
17:28It's super important for me because I can be a joyful and peaceful person,
17:34but I can also be a beast.
17:35So, having that, yeah, that connection
17:39and showing people you don't have to be angry to lift,
17:43you know, I use it as therapy and you can see it.
17:45It's great to see you in that event, Eddie.
17:47Congratulations.
17:47Thank you very much.
17:51Another Eddie getting his beast on
17:53and making a real charge for this year's final.
17:55He stays a point back from Tom Stoltman at the top of the standings,
17:58but it's three clear now of Thomas Evans.
18:02The battle for places in the grand final continues under the Sacramento sun
18:06when we return on the SPD World's Strongest Man.
18:17Welcome back, everybody, to Sacramento where we're ready for our next evento.
18:32It's the overhead medley.
18:34Eddie, it's intense.
18:35It's a hot day.
18:36What are the athletes going to be going through as they make their way up this course?
18:39Well, it's all about the rhythm, you know.
18:41You're going to be in the dumbbell twice, so you're used to one arm,
18:44and then you're back to two arms, you're on the log press, you're going to do that twice.
18:47You've got to think at this point, after four reps,
18:50the heart rate's going to get into, like, 150s, 160s.
18:52Then they're doing the circus barbell, another two reps of a different apparatus.
18:57Heart rate's going to be getting in the 170s, 180s,
18:59and then you've got to do something different again.
19:01The 168 axle for the final lift is a very, very tough lift.
19:06If you do that on its own, it's a tough lift.
19:08Never mind after six previous, so they've really got the hands full.
19:12Excellent.
19:13All right, overhead medley over to Colin and Danny.
19:19Well, thank you, James.
19:20Thank you, Eddie, and first up with the overhead medley,
19:24Austin, smash Andrade.
19:27Going on his own, and he's really under some pressure now.
19:31And that's fair to say, two events down,
19:34and he really hasn't quite performed as well as he hoped he would have.
19:38Made the final in his debut year last year,
19:40but deals with that dumbbell fairly well.
19:44He is a great presser, brilliant log presser.
19:48See how he gets on, that's good, but he's, remember, this is all about time.
19:52It's not just about weight.
19:53He's, he's being a bit too deliberate for my liking, really.
19:58Well, he is going on his own, isn't he?
20:00So, that will hinder him, maybe.
20:04Yes, that's, sadly, his honour for coming last in the previous.
20:11Overhead it goes.
20:12One more, and then he's on to this axle,
20:14and that'll really separate the men from the boys.
20:17He's up to 55 seconds now.
20:22The difficult thing is he's seen no one else go,
20:25so he doesn't really know the tactics to play here.
20:27Should he have spinned through this?
20:28Will everyone find this easy?
20:29I doubt it, because this is heavy.
20:32I think he's just focused, doesn't he,
20:33on getting all seven lifted,
20:36and doing it well.
20:38Well, well, well, he nails it.
20:44It was within the time limit.
20:46Just.
20:47All seven in 1.13.
20:51Get him out the second and a half to play with.
20:53Let's hear it for Austin Andrade.
20:56Not normally a big talker, but a big shouter when it goes well, eh?
20:59He's a bit happy about that.
21:01So are we.
21:04Representing South Africa.
21:06Skunvinko.
21:06Skunvinko, up next.
21:10Very good at hoisting, lifting.
21:14Thomas.
21:15Up against Tom Evans.
21:19Just look at him.
21:20He's built to press.
21:21He's got plenty of upper body meat about him.
21:24Big Tom.
21:25Ooh.
21:26Skunvinko nearly jumped the gun there.
21:30Tom straight away.
21:31Off he goes.
21:32Now remember, three years ago,
21:34Skunvinko made the final.
21:36In his first ever attempt at World's Strongest Man.
21:38And this was the event.
21:39In the final, he damaged his ACL on.
21:42So he gets through that.
21:43That must have been a bit of a monkey off his back there.
21:46Yeah.
21:47Yeah, he ruptured it, didn't he?
21:48That's right.
21:49Struggling now.
21:50Skunvinko with that log.
21:51Looked a little bit off, didn't it?
21:54He's not locking it out, is he?
21:55No.
21:56I don't know if he's got elbow problems.
21:58But his lockout looks a bit dodgy.
22:00And Magnus isn't happy.
22:01Now he gives it.
22:03This is a very good classic technique from Evans.
22:08Using the power belly.
22:09Down.
22:10There he goes.
22:11He moves on to the axle.
22:14Skunvinko dropped behind.
22:16He's making too many mistakes, Skunvinko, this year.
22:19Tom Evans could grab the lead here.
22:23He indeed can do it.
22:25I think he will do it.
22:26He's got such impressive, impressive power.
22:28There we go.
22:29Was it ever in doubt?
22:33A little less elegant at the end though.
22:35Yes, Dave Warner, the referee running.
22:37Want to help him.
22:40Well, that's that.
22:41Time's up.
22:42Skunvinko.
22:44Not a great performance.
22:47Things are looking a bit sticky for Skunvinko.
22:50Tom Evans keeping himself in the running.
22:53Still have a pair to go, of course.
22:55Seven objects in a time of 1.05.1.
22:59Seems to almost black out there, didn't they?
23:00That's all seven in 1.05.
23:05I think with that sort of performance,
23:06he's putting himself in great position for his first final.
23:14So have you watched that keenly?
23:17Time for Eddie Williams to step up.
23:22And Tom Stoltman.
23:23Tom Stoltman with all that experience under his belt.
23:28Could be a walk in the park.
23:30Six foot eight man has no right being a good presser.
23:33With long arms as well.
23:35But watch this.
23:36The big one.
23:36Oh, a little bit of a slip there.
23:39That's what you don't want to do.
23:41Start having to play catch up.
23:43But he managed to hold on to it.
23:45No problem.
23:45It's only 90 kilos.
23:46Which for him is a bit of a baby bell, really.
23:49It's good though to know you're fallible, isn't it?
23:52Focuses the mind.
23:55Eddie Williams once again.
23:57He's some man keeping up close to Tom here.
24:01This probably has been his Achilles heel, if you like.
24:05Eddie Williams depressing.
24:06And the past has scuppered him from making a final.
24:11Big Tom.
24:13May bother for the big year.
24:15He's really extended that lead.
24:1845 seconds as he approaches the Axel.
24:21Some nonchalance.
24:22But look at the time he's got to play with, Colin.
24:24Yes, he's got plenty of time to beat both Andrade and Evans.
24:30And he does.
24:30He does.
24:31And that's a great time.
24:33And maybe the highest the Axel has ever been.
24:37What is that?
24:37Just under 57 seconds.
24:39Yep.
24:40Roundabout.
24:40Eddie Williams trying to clean this up to his shoulders.
24:44Ooh.
24:45Doesn't get under it.
24:46A little more Olympic weightlifting, I think, Ken.
24:49He spat out pure steam there.
24:50That's how hot he is at the moment.
24:52But what a performance from Tom Stoltman.
24:54Just way ahead.
24:55Big Tom Stoltman.
25:00The final Axel.
25:02The endgame monster.
25:03No problem.
25:04In 56.95.
25:06Yeah, 56.95.
25:08Let's hear it for Tom Stoltman.
25:09Goodness me.
25:10Finishing first.
25:11Overhead medley.
25:12Tom Stoltman.
25:14Holding up four fingers at the end there.
25:16Looking for his fourth title.
25:187 in 56 seconds.
25:19It's huge for Stoltman.
25:21And he's with Michelle now.
25:26Cracking job there, Tom.
25:27Did it feel like there was a bit of added pressure with this event?
25:30Because obviously, Austin Andrade did it.
25:31Thomas Evans did it as well.
25:33I'm confident I can do this.
25:34I've proved time and time again in press medleys.
25:37I'm one of the best in the world.
25:38And it felt all right.
25:39I just kept my head.
25:41And I'm glad that I was able to win the group.
25:42And hopefully win the whole thing.
25:44All going according to plan so far, would you say?
25:46Yeah, it's all going to plan.
25:48I wanted to get a good result in the deadlift.
25:50I did that.
25:50So now, the next two events after this are amazing for me.
25:54So it's going to be all ways in from here.
25:56We're rooting for you, Tom.
25:57Good luck.
25:57Thank you very much.
26:01Three events into Heat 1.
26:02And we've got one Tom five points clear on top of the group.
26:05The other, Thomas Evans, moving up to tie Eddie Williams for second.
26:10On then to event four.
26:11It's the Titans toss.
26:13It's a throwing event, but not as we know it.
26:15As we walk down to the end, which is, what, fully 12 meters away.
26:18How is that going to play with them trying to work out the trajectory on the fly?
26:23It's pretty tough because throwing events in the past, you just throw it over an obstacle
26:26that's perhaps six foot behind you, you know, five, six meters high.
26:30But with this, you're changing the trajectory every single time.
26:34And if you get it one, two, three, four, five percent off, it's a bit like a rocket ship.
26:38If you get that percentage off a little bit, it doesn't land on the target.
26:41They're going to fall short.
26:42They're going to go straight up and come down.
26:43But in general, it's hard and as far as you can behind you is the key.
26:49Excellent.
26:49Let's get tossing over to Colin and Danny.
26:53Well, thank you, James.
26:54Thanks, Eddie.
26:55So first to take on the Titans toss.
27:01I just talked about him.
27:03I don't name him.
27:04It's Eddie Williams.
27:07And this game of endurance, strength and physics.
27:11Wow.
27:14Looking powerful at the moment, Eddie Williams anyway.
27:17But with each pair, they have to go a meter further out.
27:22And it gets harder and harder, of course, as they get tired and tired.
27:28Oof.
27:28Just over.
27:30Things are starting to look a little tricky.
27:31Number seven.
27:35Goodness me.
27:36Gets it.
27:36All over the country.
27:40People who work in health and safety can feel their buttocks tightening.
27:46Oh, no.
27:47Up and down.
27:48Went too high.
27:49Slipped down his hands.
27:50This is the last one.
27:52From 12 meters away.
27:54He's got to stay behind that line, though.
27:57Well, that one doesn't count.
27:58And either that floor's very hot or that was breakdancing.
28:03It's here for the breakdance for Eddie Williams.
28:06Great effort from Eddie.
28:08Only missed two.
28:09With eight sandbags at a time of 35.66.
28:14Give it up for the singing strongman, Eddie Williams.
28:17Well, he's delighted with that.
28:21What do you think of his moves?
28:24That'd be one way to clear a nightclub.
28:25Representing Mexico, Austin Andrade.
28:32Hopefully, he's learned from Williams and will not be dancing.
28:37Representing South Africa.
28:38Up against Jaco Schoonwinkel.
28:41I think he's going to relish this.
28:44Yes, the ever-happy Jaco Schoonwinkel.
28:48He was hoping to do well in this.
28:51Certainly, in training, he looked good.
28:53He's very explosive.
28:54And again, so too is Andrade.
28:57If you have a big deadlift, chances are you will have a big toss.
29:02That's the old saying, isn't it?
29:05But such a confident performance here for both men.
29:09Schoonwinkel.
29:11Very powerful throw, I want to say.
29:13Is there another word we can use?
29:15Oh, Schoonwinkel missing there.
29:19And again.
29:23Andrade too.
29:24They're getting harder and harder each toss as they get further away.
29:27Well, that's it for Schoonwinkel.
29:29Oh, Andrade still has one left.
29:33It's the 12 meters.
29:35Jumps back.
29:36And like Eddie Williams, ends up on the floor.
29:40Well, seven.
29:40Put your hands together.
29:4131.
29:43For Austin Andrade.
29:45And Schoonwinkel.
29:46And Schoonwinkel, seven.
29:47In a better time, just over 25 seconds.
29:50That's one of the tactics.
29:51You go fast, but you try and save yourself for the final few.
29:56You burn out so quickly in this kind of event.
29:59Next up, Tom Stolman and Thomas Evans will send their sandbags sailing through the Sacramento sky.
30:05It's the top two when we return on the SPD World's Strongest Man.
30:19Welcome back to Sacramento, California.
30:24Group one of the SPD World's Strongest Man.
30:26We're defending champion Tom Stolman in the lead.
30:29And next to go in the Titans toss.
30:31Back to Colin and Danny.
30:32Well, thank you, James.
30:34Representing the United States of America, Thomas Evans.
30:36So we continue with this event.
30:40Thomas Evans.
30:43Up against the Brit, Tom Stolman.
30:47The Titans toss.
30:50That's right.
30:50Tom with his height.
30:52Certainly has some advantage.
30:54Test of stamina.
30:56Can be, but speed would be even better.
30:59The quickest 10 is really what you want.
31:02But we haven't seen that so far.
31:04Look at Tommy.
31:05Goodness me.
31:06Low flying planes.
31:07Beware.
31:10So far, so good.
31:11Now, I tell you what.
31:12He's handled the pressure of this rules format change
31:16where he is taking on everyone in every heat now.
31:20When you realise that, the pressure is huge on him.
31:24Goodness me.
31:24It's just never ending.
31:25Well, I say that.
31:26We're at the end now.
31:27Look at this from Stolman.
31:28Oh!
31:28He manages it.
31:31And that's put Evans off his game.
31:35He does the 10.
31:37That's a great result for Tom Stolman.
31:41He's back.
31:41He's in it to win it.
31:42He wants his fourth title.
31:45And can Evans finish off?
31:48Not quite.
31:49Let's hear it for Thomas Evans.
31:51But his 10th one managed to hit the upright and bounce over.
31:58It all counts.
31:59It all counts.
32:00That was extraordinary.
32:02We thought it might be an impossible task,
32:04but big Tom has done it.
32:06Two, three, four.
32:10He's going to get his fourth, he says.
32:12And it starts right here.
32:14With seven sandbags in a time of 29.06.
32:16So seven in 29 seconds for Tom Evans.
32:20For Thomas Evans.
32:23Must have been frustrating at the end there
32:25when he knew that this guy had already completed all 10.
32:3131.97.
32:33Is there any stopping this man?
32:36There it is then.
32:42All 10 sandbags dispatched in a little over 30 seconds.
32:46Consider that a warning toss to all Tom's rivals.
32:50And it means that overall,
32:51the big Scott has now sealed his place in this year's grand final.
32:54He still has work to do, though.
32:56His results in all five group events
32:58will be ranked against the other finalists
32:59to determine their starting order.
33:04Well, on then to the last event,
33:05the stone medley.
33:08For Schoenwinkle, Evans and Williams,
33:10this is a shot at capturing the second qualifying spot.
33:14For Tom Stolman, meanwhile,
33:16it's a chance to be king of the stones once again
33:18and boost his ranking in the final.
33:20Mexico's Austin Andrade's hopes of qualifying were sadly already over.
33:25But he still went out with a boom,
33:27putting up all four stones in a time of one minute and 25 seconds,
33:32showing the rest of the field as his brand new event should be done.
33:35South Africa's Yako Schoenwinkle was still in contention,
33:42but lying four points behind Eddie Williams,
33:44he needed something big.
33:46Putting up one stone in 12.44 seconds wasn't it.
33:50On then to the man in third
33:53and needing to close a two-point gap to reach his first final,
33:57it's America's Thomas Evans.
33:58Back to Colin and Danny.
33:59Well, thank you, James.
34:01And what an intimidating event this is.
34:06A mix of weights and tasks.
34:11This first stone over 20 stone.
34:15Lift and press.
34:18That's quite something.
34:20And just balancing on your chest
34:22before you can get your hands under it
34:23is half the battle.
34:24Oh!
34:27Massive chest, Tom Evans.
34:29I'm not sure that helps in this scenario.
34:31There's no room for the stone.
34:35Looking like this is going to be
34:36a bit of a struggle already.
34:38And that is a heck of a weight on the chest.
34:41Oh, my goodness me.
34:46The press-up is optional,
34:48but he decided to do it.
34:50I'm not sure if you had a little sleep there or not.
34:52I may have.
34:54I think the referees have decided he was all right.
34:56So they're letting him carry on.
34:57I'm sure there's a lot of people watching
35:01between their fingers right now.
35:03Yeah, I'm one of them.
35:04Yes.
35:06You're pleased to hear this is the only overhead one.
35:08Oh, no!
35:09Tom, he got the balance all wrong.
35:11Well, I mean, it did go over his head.
35:13Didn't lock out, though, I'm afraid.
35:14No rep for Tom.
35:16And I think Magnus Ferris stepping in and saying,
35:18stop there.
35:19Enough's enough.
35:22He so desperately wanted to get it up.
35:25Eddie Williams still to come.
35:26And he's within points' distance of making the final,
35:30but he'll get zero now.
35:35Representing Australia.
35:36I wonder what's going through
35:37Eddie Williams' head.
35:39I haven't seen that.
35:42If you think about the maths of it all,
35:44Schoonwinkel could possibly jump ahead of Eddie Williams here
35:48if he doesn't get this up.
35:50He needs to get at least this stone.
35:52Andrade might have done all of them,
35:54but he's out of the points.
35:56And he's looking good.
35:58My goodness, he's bent double!
36:00A little bit of a wobble on, but he gets it!
36:02Wow, that's impressive.
36:06So he will qualify ahead of Schoonwinkel.
36:10Yes, he's made it to the final.
36:11You can say that right away,
36:13but he's got to continue here.
36:15He wants to get good points going into the final,
36:18because, of course,
36:20how you finish in the heat
36:21will be judged against all those others
36:24who make the final.
36:27Here we go on
36:28to the stone carry.
36:32This is the shape of the Husserfeld stone.
36:36Eddie should be pretty good at this kind of thing.
36:39It was the pressing
36:39that would have worried him.
36:41He got through that hurdle.
36:43Husserfeld stone-shaped
36:45and drops it down.
36:47Thank you very much.
36:48He's done it.
36:49He's made the final.
36:52And this will mean
36:53an enormous amount to Eddie Williams.
36:55Ladies and gentlemen,
36:56through to his first SPD.
36:58His wife is here.
36:59She was here last year
37:00with the disappointment.
37:03It's just got better and better.
37:05And now the Australian
37:05has finally done it.
37:08The school teacher
37:08who spent so much time,
37:12so much effort and energy
37:13and money trying to get himself
37:15into shape to make a final.
37:17And this will mean
37:18a huge amount to him
37:19and no doubt
37:20all of his kids
37:21that he teaches back home to.
37:23He'll be cheering away right now.
37:25A dream achieved
37:26for Australia's Eddie Williams.
37:29I do wish he'd stopped
37:30doing this to me, though.
37:33Eddie Williams,
37:34you've done it.
37:35You've made it through
37:37to your first ever
37:38World's Strongest Man final.
37:40I don't even know
37:41where I am right now.
37:43I'm kind of...
37:44Yeah, I don't even...
37:45I don't even get to the...
37:48Anyway, I'm so sorry.
37:49We know just how much
37:51this means to you.
37:52We also know that family
37:53is so important to you.
37:56We saw your wife, Hannah,
37:57just run up
37:58and give you the biggest of hugs.
37:59We know your mum's
38:00looking after the kids
38:01back at home.
38:03They've been rooting for you
38:04this whole time, haven't they?
38:06It's crazy, you know?
38:08It takes a village
38:09to raise kids.
38:10So I think
38:11my mother-in-law,
38:13father-in-law,
38:14brother-in-law,
38:15mum and dad,
38:17I can do what I can do
38:19because we have the support
38:21and I have my wife here.
38:24She knows me inside out,
38:26so I'm so glad
38:27I get to share that with her.
38:30She knows how hard we train,
38:33you know?
38:34We could see
38:34the determination
38:35that you had
38:36coming into this year, Eddie.
38:38The resilience.
38:40Had you changed your approach?
38:41Anything within training
38:42or was it just the mindset of,
38:44you know what,
38:44I'm going to get it this year?
38:46You know,
38:47I didn't want to
38:47get ahead of myself
38:49because every year
38:50you get close
38:52and then,
38:53you know,
38:53last year was a taste
38:54of that.
38:56So
38:56this was my goal
38:58to get to the finals.
39:00Anything
39:00from the next two days
39:02is going to be,
39:04you know,
39:04I'll surprise myself.
39:06What's the plan for tonight then?
39:08Resting,
39:08regrouping
39:09with a massive smile
39:09on your face?
39:10Cheesecake Factory tonight.
39:12Enjoy it.
39:13Eddie Williams,
39:14congratulations.
39:15Appreciate it.
39:15Let's hear it one more time
39:22for Eddie Williams.
39:28So we move on
39:29as Eddie
39:31prepares to destroy
39:34all cheesecakes
39:35to Tom Stoltman.
39:39Well, normally,
39:40a man in first
39:41in such a commanding position
39:42in the heat.
39:43Well, he'd be resting now.
39:44the whistle.
39:45He'd have made it
39:46through to the final
39:47or he'd be taking it easy.
39:48There'd be no point.
39:49But this
39:50is all about points
39:51in the final
39:52for Big Tom.
39:54With the likes
39:55of Mitchell Hooper
39:55and all the other greats
39:57still to come.
39:58He needs to lay down
39:59the law here
40:00and put in
40:00a good performance.
40:06Well,
40:06slipping a wee bit there.
40:08He's known
40:08for his stone lifting.
40:10There it goes.
40:11Stone to shoulder.
40:12Oh!
40:13Wow.
40:13Oh, my goodness.
40:14Surely he put it down.
40:16Stand up with it.
40:17Oh!
40:20Crikey.
40:20That was a bit of a gamble.
40:22I think only Tom Stoltman
40:23is strong enough
40:23to stand up with a
40:24350-pound stone
40:27in his shoulder.
40:28Goodness me.
40:29I'm worried about
40:30his ankle there.
40:31Take a minute.
40:32Take a minute.
40:32Free, Tom, free.
40:34This is a struggle now.
40:36It is.
40:37He's tired himself
40:38enormously there.
40:40Really just dropped it
40:41and regrouped
40:42for a second.
40:43And this
40:46is maybe just
40:48showing the nerves
40:49about this
40:50counting towards
40:51the final
40:52for the first time.
40:53He's made it
40:54into the final.
40:55That was no problem
40:56at all.
40:57It is as if
40:58he's competing
40:58against all the others now.
41:00He must keep his focus.
41:03If he can get this up,
41:05he's got 90 seconds,
41:06remember.
41:06Come on, Tom.
41:09I think he's...
41:11It's rare you say this,
41:13but he's run out of power.
41:14His fuel tank's on empty
41:15and that's it.
41:18Well, that is two
41:19in 105.88.
41:24But where did it go wrong, Colin?
41:27Just right here.
41:28Trying to stand up
41:29with a 300...
41:30Oh, sorry.
41:32350-pound stone
41:33and it took him down
41:34as well.
41:35I hope he's not injured.
41:36Might be feeling that later.
41:39I'm feeling it now.
41:41So, Andrade...
41:42Well, he takes that event.
41:43He showed the others
41:44it was possible,
41:45but we say goodbye to him.
41:46The real drama...
41:47Well, Williams did enough
41:48to make the final.
41:49Not how Stoltman
41:50would have liked it
41:51to play out.
41:52Yeah, it's just one blemish
41:54on a near-perfect record
41:55in the five events
41:57in the heats.
41:58Let's hear how Tom
41:58is feeling
41:59he's with James and Eddie.
42:01Well, after all of that,
42:02here he is,
42:03Tom Stoltman,
42:03through the final again,
42:04Tom.
42:05You gave us a bit of a scare
42:06in the stone medley.
42:07What happened?
42:08Yeah, a wee bit of a scare,
42:09but yeah, nothing to worry about.
42:10Just lost my footing
42:11and slipped over,
42:12but yeah,
42:13the stone got the better
42:13of me there,
42:14but I'm all good,
42:15I'm all good.
42:15The good news is
42:15you got the better of it
42:16afterwards.
42:17You rescued the situation.
42:18Yeah, 100%.
42:19Yeah, no, it's just a wee
42:20switch-off moment for me,
42:21but yeah, I'm through
42:22to the final.
42:22That's the main thing.
42:24What's your mentality
42:25coming into the final now?
42:26Yeah, the train's been
42:27going very good for it.
42:27You know, I even probably
42:29expected not to
42:29win a few of these events
42:31in the qualifiers.
42:31A lot of people
42:32probably wrote me off.
42:33They usually do come
42:34into shows that are like
42:36got grip events
42:37and stuff as well,
42:37but I've been training
42:38very, very hard
42:39for this event,
42:40and you know,
42:40there's so many points
42:41to play for in the finals.
42:42There's so, so many,
42:42and yeah, I'm ready.
42:43I'll be switched on tomorrow
42:44and I'll be putting
42:45on a show 100%.
42:46Awesome, man.
42:47I'm excited.
42:48Tom, there's loads
42:49of Scottish people here
42:49in kilts and whatnot,
42:51loads at home.
42:52What message do you have
42:53for them about what
42:53you're going to bring
42:54in the final?
42:55Yeah, I mean,
42:55I've not seen anything yet.
42:56Like, you know,
42:57Head said I won
42:57four to five events.
42:58I was pretty dominant
42:59and yeah, I'm ready
43:00and I'm going to be
43:01switched on tomorrow
43:02to put on a show 100%.
43:03Magnificent.
43:03All right.
43:04Well, Tom's through then.
