00:00The End
00:30Mr. Carter Ranch, my friend.
00:59My name's Paladin.
01:00Paladin?
01:01Sure.
01:02Roy's been expecting you.
01:04I, uh, wanted to meet you for a long time.
01:06Heard Roy talk about you lots.
01:08You saved me from that hangin' last year and, uh...
01:10The man who stopped that hangin' was the prison chaplain, Robert April.
01:14Can you tell me where Roy is?
01:16Through the kitchen there, in the front room.
01:19Entertain it.
01:29Come on in.
01:30Come on in.
01:31Hey, you heard me mention him, honey.
01:32Now, he's the man that stopped the warden last year, you know, just as he was about...
01:36Roy, the man who stopped that execution was the prison chaplain, Robert April.
01:42Stopped it because he thought you were innocent of the charges.
01:46Because he believed in you.
01:47Yeah.
01:48You look tired, like you've been dragged through a knot hole or somethin'.
01:51Your message reached me just as I was finishing a job in Nevada.
01:54Yeah, I figured puttin' that on it would be enough to bring you runnin'.
01:56Roy, honey.
01:57Oh, sure.
01:58Uh, paladin this here lady's, uh...
01:59Let's talk about it.

02:54I don't know how Chaplain April is.
02:58Well, there's been a blizzard since then up there.
03:01The warden had to pull his search party back.
03:03April wouldn't come back.
03:04He's still up there, somewhere after the convict.
03:08April hates to let a soul get away from him, you know.
03:12You've been up there looking.
03:14Well, see, Ball Ridge, it's top of the world country.
03:17It's snow packed, sub-zero winds.
03:19But I figured you might stand a chance to break through up there.
03:22Yeah, we'd get a saddlebag packed with two of us.
03:24No, I guess, I guess you still don't understand.
03:26See, I owe the Chaplain a favor,
03:28and I'm willing to pay to have him brought back.
03:32Let me get this straight.
03:34Robert April's been up there for eight days and eight nights,
03:38and you've been sitting here waiting to hire me.
03:41Will you please pay him and send him on his way?
03:44You know, I know how you feel about April.
03:47I respect him, too.
03:49Well, I got a ranch to run.
03:53Here's a thousand dollars.
03:55That's your regular fee, isn't it?
03:59Do you want the job, or...?
04:01Let's get something straight, Paladin.
04:17I ain't as scared of you.
04:19And I ain't afraid of going up there after April.
04:21Nobody ever suggested that your problem was fear.
04:29All right, I got my gear, and we can go.
04:37You don't mind if one of my men take you home, huh?
04:39I most certainly do mind.
04:41Look, I'm not one of those girls you can...
04:43Why don't you let the young lady take care of the money?
04:53Vice versa.
05:13Well, we'll let the horses find their way down from here.
05:16Well, from here?
05:17We're not even sure April took this pass.
05:19Boundary peak, 13,000 feet.
05:22Snow mountain, over 14,000.
05:24This is the only way through.
05:26This is the only way through.
05:40Paladin?
05:42What?
05:46There's more weather blowing in here, you see?
05:48And the temperature up here, it can drop...
05:50It can drop 60 degrees in an hour.
05:52It can freeze the tongue right in your mouth.
05:54Yeah, the tongue in your mouth...
05:56...or the blood in Robert April's veins.
06:00Well, he didn't save your life.
06:01You talk like he was a messiah or something.
06:04No, that's right, he's not a messiah.
06:06He's an ordinary chaplain from a second-rate penitentiary...
06:09...who hasn't got enough sense to stay out of the high mountain country...
06:11...in blizzard season.
06:13That man he's up here trying to save...
06:15...would gladly kill him rather than go back to prison.
06:20Robert April's a man that never did one thing for me...
06:22...and probably never can.
06:24Right now he's depriving me of bed, board and comfort.
06:28There's no reason for any of this.
06:30No reason for April to be up here...
06:32...and certainly no reason for you and me to be up here after him.
06:34Except that I respect him more than any man I ever met.
06:52I don't think so.
06:54I don't know.
06:56It's okay.
06:58I don't know.
07:00I guess...
07:01You should be waiting.
07:02Let's go.
07:04Come on, come on, come on.
07:05Just go.
07:06Let's go.
07:08Let's go.
07:10Let's go.
07:12Let's go.
07:13THE END
07:43A page from a bible.
07:48It'll be Mr. April's.
08:13Roy, try and stay in my steps.
08:26Watch yourself.
08:28The snow's really icing up.
08:30I'll edit.
08:42Find out!
08:43Come on.
08:47Come on.
08:51Come on.
08:52Come on.
09:15Come on, Roy, work!
09:22Come on, Roy.
09:30All right?
09:38Roy, will you try and stay in my tracks?
09:52Come on, Roy.
10:22Roy!
10:30Roy!
10:32Let me be. Let me be.
10:35Boy, get on your feet! Get up!
10:38My skin burns and everything...
10:39You stay on your feet or I'll leave you here to die!
10:42It's cold now. It'll be colder in the morning.
10:44We've got to find the chapel before that storm hits.
10:46Now, you stay on your feet and you go first.
10:48Go ahead. Go on.
10:50Go on.
11:20Go on.
11:39Not even wearing a jacket.
11:40They must have had one.
11:41He must have had one. He couldn't have lived this long without it.
11:51Those ashes are still hot.
12:02Get me out of this thing.
12:11Paladin and his blankets and food are gone.
12:15If we find that convict, I'm going to kill him, Paladin.
12:18Don't worry about that. Come on and rub.
12:24Mr. April, please, listen.
12:30Maybe he might hear this.
12:34Robert April, chaplain, now listen to me.
12:39You've been lying.
12:42All that preaching, all those sermons you were lying to us.
12:46Weren't you, Robert April? Admit it now.
12:49No. No. No.
12:54Can I help you?
12:56Any other man would have said, help me.
13:00Paladin. I was expecting Roy.
13:04He's right here, chaplain. Roy get some firewood.
13:06As I need it.
13:10We'll rest, build a sled, and get you out of here.
13:14Don't let him go.
13:16My convict, he's out there. He's got a rifle.
13:20Roy!
13:22Clinton's out there. He's got a rifle.
13:24Come on back!
13:25I'm going to be there, yeah, he must be.
13:26He's got a rifle.
13:27It's not as quickly as he could shoot me.
13:28No!
13:29Tommy.
13:31I'm going to steal my car.
13:32Come on.
13:33Come on.
13:34Come on.
13:35I'm going to get him to kill me.
13:37No.
13:39And that's fine.
13:41I'm going to take that calf.
13:43I'm going to take it away.
13:44Now, Javelin, keep that wound packed with snow, and we're all in trouble, and we're gonna die without shelter.
14:14You better rest. A man can stay on his feet only so long.
14:36Put that blanket over him. Some birch barks.
14:41Then he'll break his fever.
14:44You see anything of my convict out there, Paladin?
14:47If he keeps moving, he'll have some kind of chance.
14:50I think we should invite him. A truce.
14:54You offered him a truce once, Chaplain.
14:57He thanked you by stealing your coat, your blanket, and your food.
15:00You pray for him if you want. That's the only help we can give him.
15:03You know, there's one thing I always remember about you. It was good humor. Sometimes sharp, always refreshing.
15:12Even at the most critical time, you've always had that.
15:15That's the product of a warm bath, good brandy, pleasant company between assignments.
15:21When I was a boy in Iowa, we had a large thoroughbred. Magnificent. Black. Full hand higher than any other animal on the place.
15:32He never walked when he could run. By the mile and the ten miles, Paladin.
15:38And when he would give out his strength, he would continue on in nerve.
15:43And in his exhaustion, he would see beauty or good in nothing.
15:49Chaplain, you see beauty or good in this?
15:54One man sick, another one wounded.
15:57A third man out there, likely to freeze to death and certain to be thrown back into a cage for the rest of his life if he does survive.
16:05Pain, discomfort, exhaustion, maybe death. Why?
16:14There's purpose in everything.
16:16Well, Chaplain April, you tell me what's the purpose in this. You tell me what's the sense, what's the good of it.
16:23What we're doing right now is what any animal would do. We're trying to survive.
16:28It's just possible that Macbeth was right, and this is the sum total of our lives.
16:35A tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury signifying nothing.
16:44In all of us, our faith weakens from time to time.
16:50A severe trial sometimes restores it.
16:55Perhaps that's the reason in all this.
16:58Yeah, I've cut enough birch limbs to lash a sled together.
17:03If a hard crust forms by morning, I'll try and get you and Roy out of here.
17:08In the meantime, try and get some of this done.
17:11Then do it if you can.
17:13You won't be able to pull this far by yourself. I'm really feeling much better now.
17:25Chaplain April!
17:28Help!
17:30Palin!
17:33Help me!
17:36We'll leave him the shelter and the...
17:38I'm begging!
17:39To die?
17:40There's only room on a sled for two.
17:42Well, I'll help Pull. He can have my place.
17:44You wouldn't last a mile.
17:46I'm begging. I'll go... I'll go back to prison. Help me!
17:50Either the four of us go back together, Paladin, or you two go on alone.
17:54I have no other choice.
17:56I'll go back! Help me!
18:12I'll try again.
18:14I'll try again.
18:15I'll try again.
18:16Come on!
18:17I'll try again.
18:18Let me take another breather here.
18:20Have I ever lied to you?
18:21Well, hear me then.
18:22I feel stronger with every mile.
18:25Ready, Mr. Paladin?
18:27Are you ready, Mr. Paladin?
18:53Melodyn, what's he doing here?
18:55Are you ready, Mr. Paladin?
19:26Thank God, Paladin, your horses.
19:30Well, I think I'll rest now.
19:56Maladin!
19:59Maladin!
20:02Maladin!
20:04Clinton!
20:06I can't.
20:07Get on your face!
20:08I'm a sick man!
20:10Get out of that slit.
20:12All right!
20:13You dirty...
20:14He said he wanted to help me, so I let him.
20:16You hear me, mister?
20:17I'm thanking you both for the ride.
20:48No way.
20:50You let me kill him, Paladin.
20:53And I won't.
20:54I won't.
20:55I won't.
20:56I won't.
20:57I won't.
20:58I won't.
20:59I won't.
21:00I won't.
21:02Now you hack out a grave.
21:04You ain't that big enough for two people.
21:05Chaplain April, help me, please.
21:08Chaplain April, please help me.
21:09Please.
21:11Now you hack out a grave.
21:14You ain't that big enough for two people.
21:17Chaplain April, help me, please.
21:20Chaplain April, please help me, please.
21:34Why April?
21:36A tale told by an idiot, full of sound
21:41and fury signifying nothing.
21:46All right, that's good enough.
21:47Give me a couple more minutes.
21:50You ought to say a verse for him.
22:05But I say unto you which hear,
22:08love your enemies, do good to them.
22:12Do good to them which hate you.
22:14Bless them that curse you.
22:17And pray for them which despitefully use you.
22:21And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek,
22:24offer also the other.
22:26Give to every man that asketh of thee.
22:30And as ye would that men should do to you,
22:35do ye also to them likewise.
22:37Love ye your enemies and do good.
22:41be ye therefore merciful, judge not,
22:46and ye shall not be judged.
22:48Condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned.
22:54Forgive, and ye shall be forgiven.
23:02Couldn't pull that trigger, Paladin.
23:03It's all right, Roy.
23:10He won't get away.
23:10Who from?
23:11From himself.
23:13From that posse.
23:18From whoever.
23:33I'd like to bring some of my men up here,
23:40maybe carve a proper headstone.
23:43Roy, on that headstone,
23:45there's a verse I'd forgotten.
23:49The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord,
23:54and he delighteth in his way.
24:03A gun will travel, read the card of a man.
24:21A knight without armor in a savage land.
24:27His fast gun for hire, he's the calling wind.
24:36A soldier of fortune is the man called Paladin.
24:46Paladin, Paladin, where do you roam?
24:57By the way, you're in the spirit of authored by the Lord,
24:58among other scrutin men.
25:00Each person has bearded by the Lord.
25:03Please say, do you treat them,
25:04and many other wars are not as apt.
25:21Amen.
25:24Guys, please tell them what they treat them.
