00:00Light, fancy baubles, tinsel and fairy lights. Job done.
00:06Unless you're decorating this, or this, or this.
00:14There are three things that hold Christmas up at Castle Howard.
00:16Chicken wire, glue gun sticks, and cable ties.
00:20One crack team of Christmas crafters are responsible for bringing the festive season
00:26into some of Britain's best-loved buildings.
00:31The logistics is a little bit more than moving boxes of baubles around.
00:36For Dave, Laura, Brian, and the rest.
00:43Juliana, Eve, Theodora, your end down.
00:46Christmas is a full-time job.
00:48Always get there in the end, through panic, or coffee, or gin.
00:52This is the bit that no-one ever sees backstage.
00:55Top of the tree.
00:56Cute.
00:57Designer and ex-theatre producer, Charlotte.
01:00How do we feel about buying a kilometre of green lights?
01:03And business partner, former costume designer, Adrian.
01:07If they've been purchased at full price, it was over £7,000.
01:10Right. Okay.
01:11Eight years of Christmas installations just keep getting bigger.
01:15Well, it totally looks like it's not going to fit.
01:18Balder.
01:18I'm just worried about that statue.
01:20And riskier.
01:21Just stop! Just stop!
01:23Side-stepping priceless antiques and cautious clients.
01:30How can they make an armoury Christmas-y, yeah?
01:34The clock is ticking.
01:35Three, two, one.
01:37To doors opening.
01:39God, it's fabulous.
01:41For Christmas.
01:43Next year's ambition is...
01:45Not to break the team.
01:47It's January, and in Yorkshire's Castle Howard...
02:00Hello, Nina.
02:01Happy New Year.
02:03Adrian's already setting Team Christmas to work.
02:06Our first task is...
02:08Get rid of the tree.
02:13They've got just two days to dismantle what took a year to prepare.
02:20The tree, obviously, when we put it up,
02:23has a little bit more care and attention given to it.
02:26We're a little bit more forthright, dismantling him.
02:30It's a bit brutal.
02:33It doesn't look it now.
02:35But until yesterday, this place was a wonderland.
02:39Literally.
02:43Castle Howard last year was amazing.
02:46I'm really proud of it.
02:48For the last seven weeks,
02:51the magical world of Alice in Wonderland reigned supreme.
02:56Thousands of baubles, kilometres of tinsel and fairy lights,
03:00and pure flights of fantasy
03:01delighted over 100,000 visitors.
03:09That's seven full Christmases we've now done for Castle Howard.
03:12Yep.
03:12How are we going to top it?
03:15It's going, it's going, it's going.
03:18Now they've got to start again.
03:22With ten months to design, build and install a new Christmas theme
03:27to out-sparkle Wonderland.
03:32So I'm being slightly obsessive about organisation
03:36because this box next year I know I'm going to want
03:40for the Emerald City.
03:42We're off to see The Wizard.
03:50Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
03:52Tin man, scarecrow, the winged monkeys.
03:55What's not to love?
03:57The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a firm, festive favourite.
04:02Written over a century ago,
04:04the book is one of no less than 14 set in Oz.
04:07An instant hit, its film debut was nearly 30 years
04:12before Julie Garland and her ruby slippers entered the Emerald City.
04:17Countless adaptations still draw the crowds,
04:20but from the colour of Dorothy's slippers to the number of witches,
04:24every one is slightly different.
04:26It's spring.
04:33Two miles from Castle Howard,
04:35Charlotte and Adrian's Christmas HQ
04:37is bursting with baubles, fairy lights
04:40and half a million fake flowers.
04:42For Laura in floristry,
04:47Chippy Brian,
04:48model maker Mark
04:49and the rest of the team,
04:51the whirlwind of Christmas
04:52is already on the horizon.
04:54But before they get carried away...
04:57The illustrations that strike me the most
04:58are these ones here.
05:00The bosses have to decide which parts of Oz
05:03will land this Christmas.
05:05It's very hard
05:06because people will come in thinking,
05:08first and foremost,
05:09about the film and Julie Garland.
05:11But we don't actually see Dorothy.
05:14Not at all.
05:14We might see at the very end.
05:16At the very end.
05:16But it's almost like she's just moved,
05:18walked out of the room ahead of you.
05:19Yeah.
05:20It's the feel.
05:21Much of the story is uncontroversial.
05:24The biggie is,
05:25we've got to have a prairie house, right?
05:27A crashed prairie house.
05:28A crashed prairie house.
05:29But some parts have changed considerably
05:31since the original.
05:32In the book,
05:34the slippers are silver.
05:36Are we going to reference the ruby?
05:38Well, I think we should.
05:39At the end,
05:40she's going to arrive with...
05:42Glinda.
05:42Glinda, who is red.
05:45Because that's the other thing as well.
05:46Glinda is the good witch of the south in the book.
05:49She's not the good witch of the north.
05:51North, east, south and west.
05:54The book has four witches.
05:56It's a costume designer's dream.
05:59Because you know I made this investment.
06:01How many of them did you get?
06:02Three boxes.
06:03They are premium ostrich.
06:04If they'd been purchased at full price,
06:07it was over £7,000.
06:09Right.
06:09OK.
06:10So they're all going on
06:12the wicked witch of the west's dress
06:15in the room with the winged monkeys.
06:16And the fire.
06:18We might have to discuss
06:20whether the fire can be on
06:21in that room this year.
06:23This could go on all year.
06:25Except it can't.
06:27There's a house to decorate.
06:31This year,
06:32Castle Howard
06:33is the biggest of six properties
06:35getting the team Christmas makeover.
06:38A Baroque masterpiece
06:39with over a hundred rooms
06:41lined with ancient statues
06:43and priceless paintings.
06:46The visitor comes up
06:47and they start to go
06:48on the route through.
06:50The next challenge
06:51is to work out how Oz
06:52fits into the splendour.
06:54This is the very beginning
06:56of the Yellow Brick Road.
06:57It will travel
06:59right through the house
07:00as far as the Great Hall.
07:0217 rooms require
07:04full transformation
07:05without marking the floor
07:07or chipping the china.
07:09It will look like
07:10you've got two shop fronts.
07:13And they have depth
07:14and internal...
07:14They have depth
07:15so that we can dress the windows.
07:17On the route,
07:18there's not one
07:19but two bathrooms.
07:20Two miles in the bar.
07:22Yeah.
07:22So Scarborough standing.
07:24On the loo?
07:25In front of the loo.
07:26The hundred foot long
07:27antique passage
07:28to be turned into
07:30a field of poppies
07:31and of course
07:32a tree
07:3328 feet tall
07:35uncovered in literally
07:36thousands of baubles.
07:38This is the arrival
07:40into the Emerald City.
07:42It will be a green tree.
07:44No other client
07:45that we're working for
07:45this year
07:46has any green decorations
07:47in their installation.
07:49It's a fine choice.
07:50It's a fine choice
07:51not to have green
07:52in your house.
07:57Just one thing though.
08:00Castle Howard
08:01is open to the public
08:02all year round
08:03so Christmas
08:04can't come early.
08:07Nothing can be installed
08:08until just before opening.
08:11Everything
08:12has to be put together
08:13down the road
08:14at Christmas HQ.
08:21Alright.
08:22Up.
08:24It's summer.
08:25Tilt.
08:25Yeah.
08:25And everyone's downed
08:26tools to help Brian
08:28with the first
08:29of his grand designs.
08:31We sort of need to work out
08:32how we're going to assemble this.
08:33It didn't come
08:34with instructions
08:35remember.
08:35He needs to know
08:36if he can carry it
08:37out of Christmas HQ
08:38and into the house.
08:40Push to me.
08:42That's it.
08:42Now it'll go down.
08:43We are
08:47assembling
08:47the crashed
08:48prairie house
08:49that is going to be
08:51on the China landing
08:52at the top of the stairs
08:54as you come in.
08:55Everything is flat packed
08:57but
08:57some of it
08:59is heavier
09:00than we were expecting
09:01because the timber
09:03that we got in
09:04ended up being
09:0515mm
09:06rather than
09:07the 6mm
09:07we'd sort of
09:08asked for.
09:09If it's too heavy
09:11we'll have to have
09:13a rethink.
09:18Dorothy's house
09:19weighs nearly
09:19half a tonne
09:21more than enough
09:22to flatten a witch.
09:23Her legs can stick out
09:24from under the porch.
09:25You can't have the legs
09:26hanging out that way
09:27otherwise every time
09:28the wheelchairs come through
09:29you'll run over your witch.
09:31But the problem
09:32isn't just weight.
09:34The others
09:35are convinced
09:35it's simply
09:36too big
09:37to manoeuvre
09:38through the house.
09:39Wow.
09:41At the end
09:42of the antique passage
09:43we need to negotiate
09:45round a corner
09:46past some
09:48very expensive
09:48very old statues.
09:52These panels
09:54are probably
09:54slightly too long
09:56to get round
09:56that corner.
09:58They're going to
09:59catch.
10:01I don't want to cause
10:02literally thousands
10:03of pounds worth
10:03of damage
10:04to Roman statues
10:07that I can't replace.
10:08Castle Howard
10:20has seen
10:21more than
10:21300 Christmases
10:23come and go.
10:25Not just
10:25an impressive building
10:26but a home
10:28to nine generations
10:29of the Howards.
10:31Most recently
10:31Nick
10:32and his family.
10:33This was what
10:34the southeast wing
10:36looked like.
10:37It had no roof
10:37on it.
10:38But it hasn't
10:39always looked
10:40as grand
10:40as it does now.
10:41The room we're in
10:42at the moment
10:43looked like this
10:43as well.
10:44The whole of this
10:45section looked like that.
10:47A great fire
10:47in November 1940
10:49destroyed huge sections
10:50of the building
10:51making them unsafe
10:53and uninhabitable.
10:55So when you were
10:55growing up
10:56the dome
10:57wasn't even
10:58on the house?
10:58There was no dome.
10:59There was no dome.
10:59Visitor attraction
11:00director Abby
11:01is hearing
11:01how the family
11:02began funding
11:03the renovations.
11:05My father
11:06was the person
11:06who started
11:07the restoration.
11:08He opened
11:08the house
11:09in 1952
11:10for the first time
11:11and people came
11:12in large quantities.
11:13Very interesting
11:14I was looking
11:14at a page
11:15from a house
11:17opening diary
11:18from 1963
11:19the other day
11:20and it was
11:22rather lovely.
11:23It was all
11:23in my mother's
11:24handwriting
11:24and my father
11:26had added
11:27the weather
11:27at the time.
11:28Then the number
11:29of visitors
11:30who'd come
11:30and it was
11:31an August bank
11:31ology.
11:32Do you remember
11:32how many?
11:33How many did
11:34it say?
11:35It tells you
11:35and the numbers
11:36aren't that
11:37different to today.
11:38So really
11:38we're still
11:39doing the same
11:39thing today
11:40that he started
11:42in the 50s
11:43and still generating
11:44income in order
11:45to restore
11:47rooms of this
11:47amazing place.
11:48He and my mother
11:49at that stage
11:50were much more
11:50hands on
11:51than we are now.
11:52She quite often
11:53was sitting there
11:54at the ticket desk
11:54selling the tickets
11:55and so on.
11:56I'd say you're
11:57still pretty hands on
11:58though.
11:58We get you involved
11:59in all sorts.
12:00Yes, I would find it
12:02very hard
12:03not to be a mistake.
12:06Even though
12:07many areas
12:08remain out of bounds,
12:10slowly rooms
12:11are being returned
12:12to their former glory.
12:14But the cost
12:15is astronomical.
12:17Along with staff,
12:19maintenance
12:19and electricity bills
12:21of a grand a day,
12:22this place
12:23would be boarded up
12:24if it weren't
12:25for the help
12:25of the paying public.
12:27And at Christmas,
12:28we're not talking
12:28about a thousand
12:29people here or there,
12:30are we?
12:30No, we're not.
12:31A hundred thousand
12:31people coming
12:32through your home.
12:33It's an incredibly
12:34important part
12:35of the year for us
12:36because a third
12:36of our visitors
12:37each year
12:38come at Christmas.
12:39It's lovely
12:40watching them.
12:41At Christmas,
12:42one of the things
12:43I do like to do
12:43is to go around
12:44and just look
12:45at the faces
12:45of the children
12:46and the grown-ups
12:47as they're looking at
12:48and as they come
12:49into each room,
12:51each room
12:51is a nice new surprise
12:53and that's because
12:55of the work
12:55that Charlotte
12:56and Adrian do
12:57in designing
12:58a completely new
12:59look each year.
13:01No pressure then
13:02and the countdown
13:04is on.
13:05What's the order
13:06deadline this year
13:06for Christmas product?
13:07Christmas this year
13:08needs to be bigger
13:09and better than ever.
13:11So Charlotte
13:12and Adrian
13:12are planning
13:13a wonderful
13:13Land of Oz
13:14in all its
13:15Technicolor glory.
13:17Check this out.
13:18What do you think
13:18of this potato,
13:20right?
13:20They're at one
13:21of Britain's
13:21biggest Christmas
13:22expos at Birmingham's
13:24NEC
13:24in search
13:25of decorations.
13:27Well,
13:28we do always try
13:29and reuse
13:30as much as we can
13:31but every year,
13:32obviously,
13:33there is always
13:33going to be
13:34something we need new.
13:35What do you think,
13:35ruby slipper
13:36versus silver?
13:37The problem is
13:38we do set ourselves
13:39some huge challenges.
13:41Yep.
13:42Today's challenge
13:43is finding enough
13:44of one very important
13:46colour.
13:46So it's sort
13:49of a take
13:50on our
13:50traditional
13:51Christmas colours
13:52which is red
13:52and gold
13:53but for next year
13:54maroon is
13:55very trendy
13:55on interiors.
13:57Sadly,
13:58it's not
13:59maroon.
14:00The Emerald City
14:00appears twice.
14:01The giant
14:02Christmas tree
14:03we might just
14:04go emerald
14:05but it's going
14:06to take a lot
14:07of bubbles.
14:09And a lot
14:09means 3,000.
14:11I mean,
14:13hopefully we'll
14:14be able to find
14:15some in an
14:15emerald green.
14:17Britain's first
14:18baubles came
14:18from Germany
14:19imported by
14:20the Victorians.
14:22Made from
14:22blown glass,
14:23they were worth
14:24a small fortune.
14:25Don't we need
14:25a Harlequin egg?
14:27Now mass-produced,
14:28they're relatively
14:29cheap but decorating
14:31the tree alone
14:31will cost upwards
14:32of five grand.
14:34I think that's
14:35green enough,
14:36no?
14:36If there's
14:37any in emerald
14:38green.
14:39There's some
14:40green ones
14:40hanging up there
14:41actually.
14:43This is our
14:44couture Christmas.
14:46Couture Christmas.
14:47Couture Christmas,
14:48very good.
14:49So we've then
14:50added in this
14:51gorgeous emerald
14:52sort of...
14:52Oh my God.
14:53Which I think
14:54would be perfect.
14:55Perfect.
14:58Some great
14:59emerald green
14:59over there.
15:00And the emerald
15:01drops.
15:04And that one.
15:05I've done that one.
15:05done that one.
15:07Bauble's accounted
15:08for, witches
15:09are back on the
15:10agenda.
15:11She hasn't got
15:12an actual name,
15:12has she?
15:13Goodwitch of the
15:14North.
15:15No.
15:15Glinda's actually
15:16Goodwitch of the
15:17South.
15:18This one's a good
15:20excuse for something
15:21other than green.
15:22So if you can
15:23imagine this as an
15:24actual figure,
15:25and this will be
15:26like her skirts.
15:27So am I doing
15:28a fairy dress tree
15:29with all the bling?
15:31Yeah.
15:31Okay.
15:32Yeah.
15:35August.
15:40Two months
15:40until installation.
15:43At Christmas HQ,
15:44the team are
15:45tackling the
15:45bespoke elements
15:47of the build.
15:48Bigger and better
15:49is the mantra.
15:51And with Brian
15:51making a start
15:52on the Emerald City
15:53marketplace,
15:54he's focusing
15:55on bigger.
15:56So it's going
15:57to be that height.
15:58And it's going
15:59to be 40 foot long,
16:00which is the garages,
16:08the woodwork shop,
16:09Dave's metal workshop,
16:11that entire length.
16:14In floristry,
16:16Laura's also going
16:17big for the
16:18munchkin displays.
16:20We're going for
16:21an asymmetrical,
16:22slightly bonkers look.
16:24Sometimes less is
16:26more in her design
16:27or sometimes
16:27more is more.
16:28There we are.
16:32Only Mark
16:33seems to have
16:34missed the memo,
16:35building a model
16:36of the entire
16:37Land of Oz
16:38in miniature.
16:40What I'm not
16:40confident about
16:41is the buildings
16:43we're going
16:43to put on it.
16:45I think as with
16:45a lot of these things,
16:47while you're making it,
16:48it's all a bit
16:49of a mess.
16:52We'll get the
16:53big stuff out first,
16:54the new stuff.
16:55Yeah.
16:55Which is amazing.
16:57It is amazing.
16:58Apparently.
17:01Adrian and Charlotte
17:02are preparing
17:03to create what
17:03they hope
17:04will be a smash hit.
17:06Look at this bad boy.
17:07Wow.
17:08So I do get
17:08really excited
17:09when we start
17:10to see new products
17:11because that's
17:11when the vision
17:12can happen.
17:14Do you get excited?
17:15Because I get nervous.
17:17Nah.
17:17A little bit windy
17:20today.
17:21A little bit windy
17:22today.
17:23Risking a tornado
17:24of their own,
17:25these tables
17:26are playing
17:27stunt double
17:28for the Crimson
17:29Dining Room.
17:30It has to be
17:31transformed from
17:32eatery for the elite
17:34into a wicked
17:35witch's hideout.
17:37That's got quite a nice
17:39sort of odd wine
17:40bottle feel to it,
17:41doesn't it?
17:41Yeah.
17:41Like she's a really
17:42heavy drinker.
17:46The Crimson Dining Room
17:47is where she's
17:48sort of brewing
17:49all her lotions
17:51and potions
17:52and stuff.
17:52Her laboratory.
17:53Her laboratory.
17:54I'm trying to visualise
17:55how we make it
17:57feel like a laboratory
17:58as opposed to
17:59a very lovely
18:00but not that
18:02laboratory style
18:03glass display.
18:04In the book
18:09this witch
18:10is not green
18:10and has no warts
18:12just crazy hair.
18:15Charlotte and Adrian
18:16are going a little
18:16wicked with their take
18:18but still have to
18:19tell the story.
18:21One of these
18:21Dorothy has
18:22chucked on her.
18:23Chucked on her.
18:27The narrative
18:28moment here
18:28is this is where
18:29the witch melts.
18:31You'll hear her
18:31screaming at Dorothy
18:32and then we'll
18:33create some resin
18:34water that comes
18:35out of here.
18:37It's already
18:37quite impressive
18:38isn't it?
18:38Yeah.
18:39Done.
18:42They still have
18:43time to perfect
18:44their creation
18:45but in Castle
18:47Howard's
18:47marketing and
18:48sales office
18:49August the 12th
18:50is crunch time.
18:52Tickets for
18:53Christmas are
18:54about to go live.
18:56It's making us
18:56feel nervous.
18:58Last year
18:59over 5,000
19:00tickets sold
19:01on day one
19:02alone
19:02with a third
19:04of paying
19:04visitors coming
19:05at Christmas
19:06the stakes
19:07are high.
19:09Last year
19:10we were outsourcing
19:11tickets so somebody
19:12else was dealing
19:12with all of this
19:13but for the first
19:13time we're now
19:14selling them
19:15in-house.
19:16So we've done
19:17all the testing
19:17everything's looking
19:19good.
19:19It's only really
19:20when we go live
19:21will we know
19:22that it's all
19:24going to work.
19:25This could be
19:26their Glastonbury
19:27moment.
19:28We're going live
19:29in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1
19:33let's go.
19:41Who's going to be
19:42our first bucket?
19:46It's suspiciously quiet.
19:51Something's not working.
19:52When I click on your
19:53link Georgie
19:54that you've just
19:54sent me
19:55tickets at
19:56castlehoward.co.uk
19:57The booking system
19:59has ground to a halt
20:01but Abby
20:05may have spotted
20:06the problem.
20:09I think there's
20:10an awful lot of
20:11people hitting
20:12the website
20:12all at the same
20:13time
20:14so that might
20:16potentially be
20:16causing
20:17a bit of
20:18a glitch
20:19based on demand
20:20which I guess
20:20is no bad
20:21thing
20:22that this
20:22many people
20:23want to book.
20:23I've just seen
20:24the 600
20:26more than 600
20:27it's growing
20:28all the time
20:29people in a queue
20:30so the queue
20:31is growing
20:32to get into
20:33the booking system.
20:34I've never seen
20:35demand like this
20:36in the first
20:37five minutes
20:38of going on sale
20:39it's crazy actually.
20:40Phones are going
20:41to start ringing
20:41any second I think
20:42because people
20:43won't be able
20:43to complete
20:44their booking.
20:46Oh success!
20:47Finally
20:48it's working.
20:50and there's
20:51no end
20:51of visitors
20:52eagerly waiting
20:53for a Christmas
20:54in Oz.
20:55We'd love to
20:56welcome you
20:56back this year.
21:04September.
21:05In two months
21:06time the
21:07Christmas land
21:08of Oz
21:08opens to
21:09the paying
21:09public
21:10and it
21:11wouldn't be
21:12Christmas
21:12without a tree.
21:14Well
21:1457 for
21:16Castle Howard.
21:19This year
21:19Adrian swapped
21:20his usual
21:21supplier
21:21in Norway
21:22for one
21:23just 15
21:23miles away.
21:27I get excited
21:28about the chance
21:28to go and
21:29physically choose
21:30it because
21:30it's got to
21:31be perfect.
21:32It's got to
21:32be the right
21:32height,
21:33the right
21:33width,
21:34the right
21:34size,
21:35shape,
21:35look.
21:36So I am
21:37very particular.
21:37Pity the poor
21:38grower is what
21:39I say.
21:41My wife has
21:42told me this year
21:43I have to use
21:43what three words?
21:44These are
21:45Ollie's trees.
21:50He's got
21:51150,000,
21:53most destined
21:54for front rooms
21:55all over
21:55Britain and
21:57just a few
21:57years old.
21:59But the
21:59biggies are
22:00more like
22:0130,
22:02are pruned
22:02every few
22:03months and
22:04cost a
22:04thousand pounds
22:05a pop.
22:07That to me
22:07looks like a
22:08great option
22:09for the
22:09north front.
22:10Abby and
22:10Adrian are
22:11hunting for
22:12two key
22:12specimens,
22:14at least
22:1428 feet
22:15tall.
22:17Are you
22:18happy with
22:18it from
22:18the other
22:19side?
22:20There's a
22:20little bit,
22:21it's a little
22:22bit sparse
22:22just at the
22:23bottom but
22:24I think if
22:24that's the
22:25bottom and
22:25the back.
22:26If that's
22:27facing towards
22:28the house?
22:29Yeah.
22:29Okay.
22:30The north
22:30lake's there.
22:31Yeah, so
22:31that's the
22:32front where
22:32Ollie is.
22:33There's just
22:33a little,
22:34tiny little
22:35bit here but
22:36I think we
22:37can get away
22:37with that.
22:40One down
22:41but the
22:42next is
22:42the most
22:43important.
22:44If it's
22:44good enough
22:45that might
22:46be job
22:46done.
22:47It's for
22:47the Great
22:48Hall.
22:50There's been
22:51a tree for
22:51Christmas in
22:52the Great
22:52Hall going
22:53back at
22:53least 130
22:54years, each
22:56one increasingly
22:57extravagant.
22:59Now
22:59photographed by
23:00thousands it's
23:01the centrepiece
23:02of every
23:02Christmas
23:03visit.
23:07Ollie's had
23:08one earmarked
23:09for over a
23:10year.
23:11With the
23:12pine cones?
23:18It is going
23:18to get tidied
23:19up.
23:19Oh no.
23:21The top
23:22branches are
23:23bare.
23:24We can't
23:24have that.
23:29Well my
23:30mortal enemy
23:30in this field
23:31is a pair
23:32of buzzards
23:32that live in
23:33the wood
23:33behind here,
23:34fly into here
23:35to feed and
23:36they sit in
23:36the tops of
23:37the trees,
23:38break all
23:38the new
23:38growth off.
23:40We put
23:40these bird
23:41sticks on
23:41but they're
23:42not buzzard
23:42proof,
23:42he sits on
23:43those and
23:43breaks those
23:44as well.
23:45Hopefully
23:46he's got a
23:46plan B.
23:48I love the
23:48fact that he
23:49knows each
23:49individual tree,
23:50like you know
23:51each individual
23:52bauble.
23:54Despite the
23:55draw of
23:56artificial trees,
23:57Brits still
23:58spend over a
23:59quarter of a
23:59billion pounds a
24:00year on real
24:01ones.
24:02This one
24:02bothers me a
24:03little bit,
24:03it's lovely
24:04from about
24:05six feet up,
24:06it gets a
24:07little bit
24:07too straight
24:09as it comes
24:10down.
24:11Not all of
24:12Castle Howard's
24:13will be real.
24:14What height is
24:14this one,
24:15Oliver?
24:15But for the
24:16Great Hall,
24:17fake's not an
24:18option.
24:1925.
24:20That's the
24:20smallest we've
24:21had.
24:21In a long
24:22time.
24:24That's way
24:25too short.
24:29He's a bit
24:30funny, he's
24:31quite a lot
24:31taken off his
24:32bottom.
24:36Actually, this
24:36is nice from
24:37the front,
24:37Abby.
24:38This is
24:38really nice
24:39from the
24:39front.
24:39This is
24:39lovely.
24:40Not bad
24:41round the
24:41back.
24:42There's a
24:43little bit
24:43in here,
24:44but nothing
24:45that I
24:46can't disguise
24:48with a large
24:48green velvet
24:49bow or
24:50two.
24:52Now, to
24:53make sure
24:53they can find
24:54it when they
24:55come to cut
24:55it down.
24:56Got my
24:57location.
24:58I've got
24:59resettled
25:00baseballs and
25:01carpets.
25:02Receiving
25:02Python's
25:03lightbulb.
25:05Sounds like
25:06next year's
25:06Christmas theme.
25:07It's just six
25:14weeks until
25:15Oz descends on
25:16Castle Howard.
25:18At Christmas HQ,
25:20there's no time
25:21to waste.
25:22I'm personalising
25:23broomsticks for
25:25for Tin Man,
25:26Dorothy,
25:27Scarecrow,
25:29Glinda and
25:29the Evil Witch.
25:31The whole team
25:32is kind of
25:33multitasking.
25:35Props are
25:36piling up.
25:37Dorothy's dress
25:38in the attic,
25:40Winky's tools
25:40in the yard,
25:42floristry's full,
25:43so there's an
25:44overflow for
25:44faux flowers.
25:45So we've had a
25:46bit of a
25:46reorganisation in
25:49tent two.
25:50Wow.
25:50It's gorgeous.
25:51Really, really
25:52lovely.
25:53But Brian's at a
25:54standstill.
25:56Nothing left to do
25:57now but wait,
25:58drink tea.
26:01Oz's marketplace
26:02has to be painted
26:03tomorrow, but it's
26:05not ready.
26:06He's been waiting
26:07weeks for the final
26:08wood delivery.
26:10I've done all
26:11the prep I can.
26:13All of the
26:13backing with
26:15all of the
26:15bolt holes is
26:17all stacked
26:18neatly in piles
26:19there.
26:20The timber order
26:21is due today,
26:22but we're
26:23builders'
26:23merchants timing,
26:25so...
26:30Perhaps he
26:31should lend
26:32a hand in
26:32floristry.
26:33Piece of paper.
26:35Stretch it out.
26:36As far as it
26:37goes.
26:38Outside help.
26:39has been drafted
26:40in to get on top
26:41of decorations
26:41for the 100-foot
26:43long antique
26:44passage.
26:45One six inches
26:47wide yellow
26:48crepe paper.
26:50We've already
26:50made thousands
26:51of smaller red
26:53poppies.
26:54For the floor
26:55spaces, we wanted
26:56to create some
26:57larger ones.
26:59So Amanda has
27:01already made two
27:02poppies down there.
27:04As you can see,
27:04they're gorgeous.
27:05So we're going to
27:06create more.
27:07And then once
27:08you've done that,
27:09you cut off the
27:10excess.
27:11Using hand-dyed
27:12paper, every
27:14poppy's unique.
27:15Try not to cut
27:15your fingers off.
27:16But making them
27:17is complicated.
27:18So do you think I
27:19should add a little
27:19bit of green here?
27:21With nearly 70 to go,
27:23there's no guarantee
27:24they'll be finished
27:25in time.
27:26Hopefully by the end
27:27of today and tomorrow
27:28we'll have made two
27:29each, but there's still
27:31quite a lot to make.
27:31outside, there's good
27:35news.
27:36Delivery is here.
27:38Finally.
27:39And bad.
27:41But it's got to be
27:41unloaded by hand.
27:42No crane this time.
27:47Today is centre
27:49triars, isn't it?
27:50All right.
27:5096 lengths of wood,
27:55each 16 feet long,
27:58have to be carried
27:59to the workshop
28:00and assembled
28:01before painting begins
28:03tomorrow morning.
28:04Brian's got a long
28:09night ahead of him.
28:22Halloween is the final
28:24themed event at Castle
28:26Howard before it opens
28:27for Christmas and the
28:28first part of Oz has
28:30arrived.
28:32Out of harm's way,
28:34in the burnt-out wing,
28:35Mark's finishing his
28:37model, and it's grown.
28:40We're just looking at
28:41this join between here
28:43and the middle.
28:45Now so big, it's in
28:47three separate pieces.
28:49That centre piece is
28:50quite heavy.
28:51If that will clear the
28:53door frame at an angle,
28:54then we've only got to
28:56worry about joining it
28:57to that one.
28:59What could possibly go
29:00wrong?
29:00Also worrying about
29:04bringing Oz in.
29:05Shall we just start
29:06from the very beginning?
29:07Sorry.
29:07We're walking backwards
29:08and forwards on
29:09ourselves.
29:09Adrian and the house
29:11curator, careful Matthew.
29:12What Matthew tends to have to do
29:17is completely clear
29:18everything.
29:20You tend to err on the
29:21side of caution, don't you?
29:22Curators by nature are
29:24very risk-averse.
29:27Top of Adrian's list,
29:29something he's been
29:30keeping quiet about.
29:31And then is this where we
29:34meet the Wicked Witch?
29:35This is where we meet
29:35the Wicked Witch.
29:37She's going to be stood
29:38in all of her splendour
29:39in front of the fireplace.
29:41And then accompanying
29:42the Wicked Witch
29:44are her two flying monkeys.
29:47Oh.
29:48Which are chimpanzee
29:49real thighs
29:50with quite big wings.
29:53So they're sculptural pieces.
29:54Yeah.
29:54I was wondering whether
29:55I can perch
29:56one on a desk
29:58and one on a piano.
30:00Absolutely not the piano.
30:05It's a lovely
30:06broadwood grand piano.
30:0718th century.
30:09Very old, very fragile.
30:12And not particularly
30:13weighted bearing.
30:14Maybe the desk.
30:15The desk is slightly
30:16more robust.
30:19That could have been worse.
30:21Next up, he needs permission
30:23to bring in the
30:24flat-packed prairie house.
30:26Yes.
30:26And it's going to have
30:27to come this route.
30:29And I want to get it
30:29down.
30:30Down the passage?
30:31Down the passage.
30:32OK.
30:32Because the back wall flat
30:34is pretty enormous.
30:36So we've measured it.
30:37It will go past Fortuna.
30:39But I'm just very conscious
30:40it's a very big,
30:42heavy piece of scenery.
30:45It's not a decision
30:47to be taken lightly.
30:48She's around about
30:50she's around 2,000 years old
30:51and she's been here
30:52for about 200 years
30:54at the end of the passage.
30:58But yes,
30:59carefully around Fortuna,
31:01I'm sure we can get
31:01the prairie house
31:02squeezed in somehow.
31:04Great.
31:05Success.
31:06Fortuna's smiling
31:07on Adrian.
31:08It's November,
31:15installation month.
31:17The last few days
31:18have seen a whirlwind
31:19of activity.
31:20Green paint
31:21everywhere.
31:23Poppies in their
31:25hundreds.
31:26And a certain amount
31:28of feather fluffing.
31:29I have never worked
31:31with ostrich feathers.
31:32We'll hope for the best.
31:33At the house,
31:35precious furniture's
31:36gone into storage
31:37while Abby's
31:39been wrangling
31:39a film crew
31:40to make a Christmas promo.
31:44So I think
31:44we were hoping
31:45to disprove
31:46the old saying
31:47about working
31:48with children and animals.
31:49Three, two, one.
31:51Action.
31:53This could take longer
31:54than we thought.
31:57And at Ollie's farm,
31:59timber.
32:03Now, time has run out
32:05and Oz has to be
32:07taken to the castle.
32:10These are awkward
32:12as hell.
32:12And Brian's
32:13Emerald City
32:14market stalls
32:14are causing
32:16another big problem.
32:18I should have measured
32:19the height of the truck.
32:21It's one of those.
32:22Everyone gets going
32:23and you've...
32:24Keep going.
32:27Those are only
32:28eight foot
32:28so they should fit.
32:29Ah.
32:34We're about to
32:35stick it on a bonfire.
32:36Right, let's
32:37bring it down and out.
32:48Right, three-point turn.
32:50Except somebody
32:51stuck some peacocks
32:52in the way.
32:53Right.
32:53Right.
32:54Your end,
33:01Juliana,
33:02Eve,
33:02Theodora,
33:03your end down.
33:07Perfect.
33:09Watch the box,
33:10Mark.
33:12Castle Howard
33:13may be just
33:14two miles up the road,
33:15but the build
33:16starts tomorrow.
33:18Nothing
33:18can be left behind.
33:21Line the roof.
33:22Straight back,
33:24bend the knees.
33:25This feels
33:26tacky still.
33:28All right,
33:29I'll have to
33:29watch that.
33:32All righty.
33:37Oh.
33:39That one.
33:42Paint been painted.
33:44Ah.
33:45Need to remember that
33:46because we
33:47can't really
33:47take paint
33:48into the house.
33:49in less than a week
33:52it all needs
33:52assembling,
33:54dressing
33:54and finishing
33:55before doors
33:57open
33:57for this year's
33:58Christmas.
34:00We're getting there.
34:02Maybe it's all
34:02going to come off
34:03again at the far end.
34:04It's going to be fun,
34:05isn't it?
34:15Castle Howard
34:16is closed
34:17to the public
34:18for installation.
34:20Piled high
34:21in the great hall,
34:2230,000 baubles,
34:2437 fake trees,
34:26a kilometre
34:26of fairy lights
34:27and much,
34:28much more.
34:29Today's main
34:30aim,
34:31first thing,
34:31is just to get
34:32all of the decorations,
34:34the props,
34:35the floristry
34:35into the relevant
34:36parts of the house
34:37so we can start working.
34:41Scarecrow.
34:43Every day
34:44the house is shut
34:45is £10,000
34:46in lost revenue.
34:48but nothing's quick
34:50in such a big space.
34:53This room alone
34:54is well over
34:56a hundred foot.
34:57It's a non-trivial
34:59distance to walk.
35:01Right,
35:02tape motor.
35:03Nuts,
35:03bolts,
35:04bolts,
35:05nuts.
35:09Scaffoldings
35:09going up
35:10to hang
35:10the highest
35:11decorations
35:11and the curatorial
35:14team
35:15are dealing
35:15with their
35:16last delicate
35:17removals.
35:18This bed
35:19has been here
35:20since around
35:21about 1825.
35:23The tape
35:23probably would have
35:24been there
35:24since 1825.
35:25Definitely.
35:29As the decks
35:30find their homes,
35:32Brian's thinking
35:33about how to
35:34bring the prairie
35:34house up
35:35through the
35:36great hall.
35:36I mean,
35:38it's heavy.
35:39We know
35:39it's heavy.
35:41Statues,
35:42china,
35:43steps to
35:44fall down.
35:46Yeah,
35:46I'm a little
35:47bit nervous.
35:50Now,
35:51decorating can
35:52begin in earnest.
35:53Why make
35:54something permanent
35:55when you can
35:56just use hot
35:57glue,
35:58gaffer tape
35:59and cable
36:00ties.
36:01A crew
36:02of 18
36:03is battling
36:04install
36:04one job
36:05at a time.
36:07Because it's
36:08so cold
36:09at this time
36:09of year,
36:10we need to
36:10add the heat
36:11back into it
36:11and get that
36:12volume back
36:12into it,
36:13so we spend
36:14the morning
36:14blow drying
36:14this.
36:15Bathroom number
36:16one is being
36:17readied for
36:18the Tin Man.
36:19The Emerald
36:20City Marketplace
36:21is taking shape
36:22and Laura's
36:24tackling her
36:24garland
36:25for the
36:25flying monkeys.
36:26I think it's
36:27about four metres
36:27long,
36:28which is a
36:29bit silly
36:29really,
36:30but I'm
36:30sure it'll
36:31look great.
36:34But out
36:35back,
36:36there's been
36:36a terrifying
36:37delivery.
36:41If we bring
36:42the lips
36:43down,
36:44get rid
36:45of the teeth,
36:45get rid
36:46of the hair.
36:47Over
36:4810,000
36:49under-fives
36:50are expected
36:50over the
36:51next two
36:51months,
36:53but our
36:53flying monkeys
36:54might just
36:55scare them
36:55all away.
36:57That was
36:57better away.
36:58immediately
36:58better.
36:59I don't
37:02think so.
37:06Day two
37:07of installation
37:08and the
37:10scaffolding's
37:10gone up.
37:11I'm not
37:21going to get
37:22round this
37:22corner,
37:23even if I
37:23get the
37:24scaffolders
37:24to move
37:25the pipes
37:25in.
37:26Brian's
37:26flat-packed
37:27prairie house
37:27hasn't been
37:28brought through.
37:30I have no
37:30idea how
37:31we're going
37:31to get
37:31the flat
37:32through
37:32now.
37:36Right.
37:36he has
37:38to find
37:38a way
37:39round.
37:42I'm
37:42going to
37:42through here,
37:44going to
37:44get Juliana
37:45and the
37:46girls to
37:46move all
37:47of the
37:47Christmas tree
37:48decorations
37:49and stuff
37:51here.
37:52I have to
37:52ask Dave
37:53to slide
37:53the tables
37:54around.
37:54This is
37:55our pinch
37:56point,
37:57this doorway
37:57here.
37:58Have I
38:00got enough
38:01on the
38:01diagonal?
38:06Three metres.
38:10It's
38:10going to
38:10be tight.
38:12Very
38:13tight.
38:16First
38:16through,
38:17the smaller
38:17sidewalls
38:18and floor.
38:21OK,
38:21we're going
38:21to have
38:21to be
38:22really
38:22careful.
38:23Really
38:23careful.
38:24It's
38:25the
38:25cornices
38:25I'm
38:25most
38:26worried
38:26about.
38:26The
38:28ornate
38:29stonework
38:29is
38:29original,
38:30over
38:31300
38:31years
38:32old,
38:32and
38:33survived
38:33the
38:33fire
38:33back
38:34in
38:341940.
38:38But
38:39Brian
38:39doesn't
38:40want to
38:40let that
38:40get in
38:41the
38:41way
38:41of
38:41Christmas.
38:45Here
38:45comes
38:46the
38:46biggest
38:47piece.
38:48Let's
38:49stick a
38:49blanket
38:49over
38:50that
38:50top
38:50corner
38:51now
38:51whilst
38:51you
38:51can
38:52reach
38:52over
38:52the
38:52banister.
38:56There's
38:58a
39:03near
39:03miss.
39:09We'll have
39:10to tilt
39:10it.
39:11Are you
39:11going over
39:12to Roger
39:12are you?
39:13Yeah.
39:19Careful.
39:19Right,
39:20go on.
39:21Right,
39:22just be
39:22careful.
39:23We're going
39:23to have
39:23to bring
39:23you all
39:24round.
39:25Yeah,
39:28if you
39:28can go
39:28towards
39:29the
39:29table,
39:29we can
39:30bring
39:30this
39:30one
39:30towards
39:30the
39:30table.
39:37It's
39:38through.
39:41Now,
39:41the
39:41precarious
39:42journey
39:42down
39:43the
39:43antique
39:44passage.
39:47Heading
39:47straight
39:48for the
39:482,000-year-old
39:49Fortuna.
39:51Right,
39:52don't bash it
39:53too far over,
39:53I'm going to
39:54hit the wall.
39:55Then,
39:56the final
39:57straight to
39:58the relative
39:58safety of
39:59the China
40:00landing.
40:07Next up,
40:08the 28-foot
40:09tall Christmas
40:10tree.
40:13I'm coming
40:14in.
40:15Jason,
40:16stop.
40:17Have you
40:17got any
40:18room to
40:18lift it
40:19there?
40:19Head
40:19caretaker
40:20David's
40:20responsible
40:21for getting
40:22it in
40:22without
40:23damaging
40:24it or
40:25the
40:25great
40:25hole.
40:27We're
40:28trying to
40:28lift the
40:29front and
40:30the back
40:30to bring
40:31it up,
40:31to bring
40:32it in,
40:32but currently
40:33it's dragging
40:34itself forward.
40:34off the floor.
40:36Just stop!
40:37Just stop!
40:39We're
40:39trying a bit
40:40of a new
40:40system this
40:41year,
40:41using a
40:42winch,
40:43but the
40:44winch was
40:44kind of
40:44dragging
40:44some of
40:45the top
40:45branches
40:46along the
40:47floor.
40:48It'd be
40:48awful to get
40:48it this
40:49far and
40:49then have
40:50a breakage.
40:51manoeuvring
40:59one tonne
41:00of
41:00Nordman
41:00fur
41:01is no
41:02easy feat.
41:05And
41:06blankets
41:06don't
41:06afford
41:07much
41:07protection
41:08for the
41:08surrounding
41:09statues.
41:11But
41:12there's
41:12nothing
41:13like a
41:13tree
41:13at
41:14Christmas.
41:21I love
41:22the smell
41:23of it.
41:23Yeah,
41:23I love
41:24having a
41:24real tree,
41:24but I
41:25always fall
41:25into the
41:25trap of
41:26I've
41:26got low
41:27ceilings,
41:28it's an
41:28old cottage,
41:29I go to
41:29the garden
41:30centre and
41:30think that
41:31looks like
41:31it'll
41:31definitely
41:32fit.
41:32No,
41:32it never
41:32does.
41:33Yeah,
41:33I always
41:34overdo it
41:35and then
41:36you end
41:36up with
41:36the top
41:37like that.
41:38No danger
41:39of that
41:40here.
41:43But
41:44will it
41:44pass
41:45inspection?
41:51It is
41:59a little
42:00bit
42:00of a
42:00crooked
42:00top,
42:01but
42:02no one
42:03will know
42:03the difference
42:04since you've
42:04got a huge
42:05green velvet
42:06bow on it.
42:07It's going
42:07to be
42:07beautiful
42:07to dress.
42:11That's
42:11a massive
42:12tick.
42:13Just
42:13one major
42:14piece of
42:14the puzzle
42:15left.
42:16Scott
42:16to
42:16security
42:16over.
42:19House
42:19head of
42:19operations
42:20Scott
42:20is trying
42:21to track
42:21it
42:21down.
42:23Any
42:24news
42:24on the
42:24yellow
42:25brick
42:25road?
42:25Over.
42:32As soon
42:32as it
42:33arrives.
42:35So
42:36that's
42:36a
42:36negative
42:36it's
42:37not
42:37here
42:37yet.
42:37Over.
42:39Negative.
42:40How?
42:45Doors
42:46open to
42:46the
42:47public
42:47on
42:47November
42:48the
42:4812th.
42:49Hopefully
42:49once we
42:49get them
42:50all on
42:50there'll
42:50be
42:50500
42:51metres
42:51of
42:52lights
42:52that
42:52have
42:52gone
42:52on
42:52this
42:53tree.
42:54It's
42:55the
42:55final
42:55push
42:56to
42:56get
42:56everything
42:57finished.
42:58Oh my
42:58God
42:59look at
42:59her.
43:00Wow.
43:02Gosh
43:02they've
43:03cracked
43:03on.
43:04Okay
43:04this
43:04looks
43:05spectacular.
43:07Team
43:08Christmas
43:09are in
43:09overdrive.
43:10My
43:10first
43:11time
43:11seeing
43:12the
43:12witch.
43:12Wow
43:12she's
43:13tall
43:13and
43:14she's
43:14green.
43:15So here
43:23we are
43:24on the
43:24Emerald City
43:25tree.
43:25They went
43:26straight in
43:26a box
43:27in January
