00:56The much-anticipated trial of accused Jeffrey Epstein recruiter Ghislaine Maxwell
01:04is now underway here in New York.
01:08We'd like some answers.
01:10Let's get the show on the road.
01:12The prosecution says Ghislaine Maxwell lured young girls with money and gifts
01:17and then subjected them to sexual abuse.
01:19Her defense argues she was the one manipulated by Jeffrey Epstein
01:23and ultimately is now the scapegoat for Epstein's crimes.
01:28What do you know, Ghislaine Maxwell?
01:30What do you know?
01:33Maxwell, the daughter of a British media mogul and Epstein's former girlfriend,
01:38faces six criminal counts, all focused on a decade-long period between 1994 and 2004.
01:44The prosecution case likely to hinge on the testimony of four women.
01:50Three of them will remain anonymous.
01:52A fourth woman, Annie Farmer, an American, has weighed her anonymity.
01:57It was definitely Ghislaine who asked me first about my sister Annie.
02:04I had definitely bragged about her to Epstein and to Ghislaine.
02:08In 1995, I was in Palm Beach and I was sitting outside by the pool
02:13and Ghislaine was, you know, leaning on a chaise and she said,
02:18Oh, it's too bad Annie's not here with us, you know.
02:21It would be very nice to have her here.
02:23They groomed me for a year to get to my sister, to get to my mom, to, you know.
02:29That's what they did.
02:30The fact that we believed at the time that she was his wife made us feel very safe.
02:37We all believed that Annie would be safe with a married couple.
02:41Like, why wouldn't she be?
03:00I saw her, I think, a couple of years after her father's death in New York
03:05at a party in the early evening in the Four Seasons Hotel.
03:12She still had her world in London, but she had moved her social,
03:17her operational base was New York.
03:22She was in a relationship with Jeffrey Epstein by this time.
03:27It was a very sort of active giver of parties
03:30and Ghislaine could fit into that life of the Upper East Side in a heartbeat.
03:37And I think to her that was an achievement.
03:39She was making it New York.
03:43Every time you went to a high-flying showbiz party
03:46or a fashion show party, she would be there.
03:51It was like she was the party.
03:55Because she was so glamorous, beautifully dressed,
03:58she would be hosting whatever party it was,
04:02even if she wasn't the hostess.
04:04And she would take over.
04:06And she was the dominant person in that party room.
04:11She knew everybody and she could work her room brilliantly.
04:15And it was a very noticeable difference
04:18from London, the early days, to New York,
04:24where she became Queen of New York.
04:28Being a young model, you get invited
04:36to a lot of dinners or events.
04:40And a lot of the times, the men are older
04:42and want to be surrounded by models.
04:44That's sort of how it is.
04:47I first met Ghislaine in the mid-'90s.
04:56Most of the time, I'd seen her in London,
04:58then in New York, then in L.A.
05:00For me, having a title, being who I was,
05:06you know, that made me valuable.
05:09I was like an asset.
05:11She seemed to, like, thrive on introducing people
05:16and hosting dinners.
05:19One of the dinners I was at, you know, Bill Clinton was there.
05:23He was the president of the United States at the time.
05:27It was Ghislaine.
05:27It invited me to it.
05:29It definitely showed her power of being able to pull these people,
05:33you know, into something that was very intimate.
05:36And it was like, wow, okay, she's good.
05:40And I think Geoffrey just sort of stepped back
05:43and kind of let her do it.
05:46They were like a team.
05:48She was more social than him.
05:50It's almost like she would bring them in, you know, to the den,
05:54and then he would do business with them.
05:58And she looked like she enjoyed it.
06:06Basically, everyone who knew Epstein said something like,
06:09oh, I always knew he was into young women.
06:12You know, I didn't really think anything of it.
06:14And, you know, if you're talking about, like,
06:17New York in the 80s and 90s,
06:19like, rich billionaires being into young women
06:21is certainly, like, not that weird, you know, by any stretch.
06:24But almost everyone knew very specifically
06:27that Epstein was the guy who, like,
06:30oh, he likes young girls.
06:31Hello, is this Stuart?
06:41Yes.
06:42Hey, how's it going?
06:43I'm a writer.
06:44I'm doing a story on Jeffrey Epstein.
06:46I was wondering if maybe you wanted to talk,
06:48if you had any interactions with him or ever met him.
06:52Jeffrey had no attention span, whatever.
06:54It was about three seconds.
06:55He would interrupt the conversation and change it
07:01and say things like,
07:02what does that got to do with pussy?
07:05Really?
07:06Yeah, that was his favorite expression.
07:08In other words, it was subject changer.
07:10And it revealed what was really in his mind.
07:12Dan, by chance, had a partner, Elan,
07:17who was a basket case.
07:19Right.
07:20The story is more bizarre than people begin to realize.
07:25She arrived in these shores,
07:27a depressed, dysfunctional wreck
07:31from what happened to her on account of her father.
07:36Right.
07:37And the last thing that should have happened
07:39to someone like that is to fall in
07:41to the care of the likes of Jeffrey.
07:43Sure.
07:44He molded her
07:46into being complicit
07:50with his
07:53apparitions.
07:59I think it was
08:00a bit of an open secret
08:02that he was seeing other women,
08:03but she didn't walk away from it.
08:07And she wanted to remain in his life.
08:10And if he was going to see
08:11other people,
08:12then she would rather know about it
08:15and, in a sense,
08:16have some say in it.
08:17So I think that was
08:19hidden in plain sight.
08:23I was told by a very close friend of Ghislaine
08:26that she'd been at an event
08:28in New York.
08:30And then Ghislaine says,
08:31well, I've got to go now,
08:32you know,
08:33see you after the event,
08:36because I've got to go
08:37and get some girls for Jeffrey.
08:38It stuck in my mind afterwards
08:43that she thought it was her job.
08:46So that it was like it was a duty.
08:48And when do you stop and say,
08:51hang on,
08:51this has gone from just a bit
08:54questionable or even seedy
08:55to something worse?
08:57I met her at a dinner in New York
09:02sometime in the 90s.
09:04It was a sort of well-heeled
09:06Upper East Side dinner party.
09:09She looked fantastic
09:11and I hadn't seen her
09:12for probably nearly a decade, maybe.
09:15She was exactly as she'd always been.
09:17She was incredibly friendly.
09:19Tell me all about you.
09:20What have you been doing?
09:22And she kept going,
09:23so what's it like in London?
09:24What's happening in London?
09:25And I said,
09:26what are you doing here?
09:27You know,
09:27why don't you come home?
09:29And she said,
09:31yes, she said,
09:31sometimes I think of coming home.
09:34And then she said,
09:35but I'm involved in this relationship
09:37and it's really complicated.
09:39I said,
09:39why is it complicated?
09:40She said,
09:40it's just very complicated
09:42and I'm entangled
09:43and it's very difficult
09:45to extract myself
09:47and I know it's not good for me,
09:49but I don't feel like
09:50I can get out right now.
09:51I wonder if one day
09:56the totally unacceptable
09:59blurred with the almost acceptable
10:02and once she stepped over that line,
10:05there was no coming back.
10:11When I first met Ghislaine,
10:13she looked so elegant.
10:15I could see why people
10:16thought she was beautiful
10:17and that very quickly faded
10:19when I got to know her.
10:23I was an art student
10:25in Manhattan in 1995
10:28when I had the unfortunate experience
10:31of connecting with Jeffrey Epstein
10:34and Ghislaine Maxwell.
10:37The second time I met her,
10:39she was being very foolish,
10:41like in a very high school way.
10:43We sat down to dinner
10:44and she hands around this brown bag
10:47and when we reached in,
10:49there were falsies in the brown bag
10:51and like condoms
10:52and weird sex things
10:54and I was like,
10:55I don't want to play this game.
10:56So immediately I knew
10:57she was weird.
11:06I only worked for Jeffrey and Ghislaine
11:08for a year.
11:09I was just a student
11:10and I didn't have any money.
11:12I was living hand to mouth,
11:13starving,
11:14and so I was stuck with them
11:15and I worked at the door
11:18and all that it entailed
11:20was sitting there
11:21with a large white book
11:23and everyone that came in and out
11:25had to be signed in.
11:29One time Ghislaine walked over
11:30and said,
11:31look at the pinhole
11:31right next to you
11:32and she's pointing
11:33right next to my head
11:34and it was very disconcerting
11:37and so I asked Jeffrey
11:38and he took me in the room
11:39where all those cameras led.
11:42It was like the old kind
11:43TV screens,
11:44you know,
11:44it's 1995
11:44so they're like stacked
11:46but in shelves
11:47and all the pictures
11:51were like private,
11:52you know,
11:53like the restroom
11:54or the bedroom
11:55or the wherever.
11:57It wasn't like pointed
11:58to the outside of the house
11:59where people were coming in
12:00and you're watching
12:01the people walking by.
12:02It was inside the house.
12:05One of the most disturbing things
12:07was that Ghislaine would have
12:09all these young teens
12:10coming and going
12:11and they were all girls
12:13and they were sometimes
12:15in school uniforms.
12:16I asked her what they were
12:18and she said models
12:19for Victoria's Secret
12:20and after a while
12:22I said they can't be models
12:23because they don't have breasts
12:25and Victoria's Secret's like,
12:26you know,
12:27they sell bras
12:27and she said,
12:29no, no, no.
12:30She said the limited corporation,
12:31Maria,
12:32has every kind of company involved.
12:34They have all kinds of models
12:36for whatever that they're selling
12:38so there are children
12:40that model.
12:41It just seemed very strange.
12:43The only person
12:44that was scouting models
12:46was Ghislaine
12:48and she was going out every day.
12:50That was her full-time job.
12:51I mean,
12:51that's what she told me.
12:53Ghislaine would go
12:54and get people
12:55out of Central Park.
12:57She would go around the time
12:58that school was ending
12:59and she would do this
13:01from the limousine
13:01and she would do this
13:03walking across to Central Park
13:05or walking by the schools.
13:07She invited me
13:09into the car with her
13:10and I saw her jump out,
13:12give her phone number
13:13to a girl
13:14who was definitely
13:15a high school's child
13:16and then run back
13:18with a number
13:19and then that child showed up,
13:21you know,
13:22as one of the models.
13:23So that's how I knew
13:24she was doing it.
13:26Sometimes there were parents
13:28with them,
13:28but very rarely.
13:30And I remember
13:32a little girl
13:33walking downstairs crying
13:34and she was wearing
13:35a uniform
13:36and I thought,
13:37what happened?
13:39And Ghislaine said
13:39she didn't get the job.
13:41Some people aren't
13:42cut out for modeling,
13:43you know,
13:43and I'm like,
13:44whoa,
13:45she's a kid.
13:46And I was like,
13:47I don't like this job.
13:48You know,
13:49I didn't know
13:49what was going on.
13:50I just didn't like it.
13:52The energy was really bad.
13:53One day,
14:01I got a phone call
14:03from Ghislaine Maxwell's office
14:05asking me if I would
14:07take a meeting with Ghislaine.
14:11I had just published a book
14:12which I called Royal Blue
14:14and it was a semi-autobiographical
14:17story of my childhood.
14:20I don't believe
14:21she read the book.
14:22I think she read the review
14:23I go in
14:25and she launches
14:26right into it
14:27and she says,
14:28I want my royal blue.
14:31I want you to ghostwrite it.
14:34And then she starts pitching me.
14:37She says,
14:37I want you to live with me
14:38for a year
14:39and get to know everything
14:41and see everything.
14:43You're going to meet everyone.
14:46And then she finishes up with,
14:48I'm going to give you
14:49a lot of money.
14:51And I did not say anything.
14:54I don't look jubilant.
14:56Now she changes tack completely.
14:59She starts to beg.
15:00And she says,
15:01please,
15:02you have to write this book for me
15:05because I want Jeffrey to marry me.
15:09She says,
15:09I need Jeffrey to see me
15:11in a different light.
15:13And she says this extraordinary thing to me.
15:17She says,
15:19Jeffrey has to have three orgasms a day.
15:22And it's been determined by the best doctors in the world.
15:26And I help him
15:28because I cannot keep up with his libido.
15:32She tells me that she recruits three girls a day.
15:37And she says,
15:39what I do is when we're in Palm Beach,
15:42I get in my car
15:44and I drive to the trailer parks
15:46and I look for Jeffrey's type.
15:49And when I see
15:51what I'm looking for,
15:53I approach,
15:54I make a deal,
15:56I bring them home.
15:58It was like you're ordering in food
16:01and then you order in new food the next.
16:03It was just offensive.
16:06I'm disgusted with her.
16:08And so I now lose my temper,
16:11which I can do.
16:12And I say to her,
16:14what are you talking about?
16:18Who are these girls?
16:20And she says to me,
16:21they are nothing.
16:24They are trash.
16:30She treated us like useless peasants.
16:33That's how she spoke to people
16:34that she deemed beneath her.
16:36And it was shocking.
16:39You know, I was called a nobody.
16:40And it was so strange
16:42because there was this part of me
16:43that admired them so much.
16:56Ghislaine knocked on the door
16:57and she was in her bathrobe
16:58and it wasn't even properly tied
17:00and I felt uncomfortable.
17:01So she started walking me
17:03down the hallway
17:04to a room I wasn't allowed to go to.
17:06I was told very strict rules
17:08not to even ever go in this one room.
17:09It was Jeffrey's room there
17:11and I got this really bad feeling.
17:16I walked in and I just knew.
17:18Ghislaine instructs me to rub his feet
17:20and I'm like, you know,
17:22and I was not good at it on purpose.
17:25And Jeffrey said, you know,
17:27sit up here.
17:29And I sat between them
17:30and I felt really uncomfortable,
17:36but I thought, well, maybe
17:38it's not going to be something bad.
17:41You know, they're just so weird anyway.
17:42Maybe this is part of it.
17:44But no, it was something bad
17:45and they began to assault me
17:48and they were both like doing it together.
17:52It became like this mechanical,
17:54you know, assault.
17:56But Ghislaine seemed to be the one,
17:57the only one enjoying it.
17:59Let me put it that way.
18:00Because I was crying
18:01and she was like rubbing my tears
18:03and wiping my hand
18:04and loving all over me.
18:06And I at some point
18:09just kind of forced myself up
18:11and like rolled up
18:13and got up
18:13and just ran out of the room.
18:15And I pushed this piece of furniture
18:18up against the door,
18:19just waited all night
18:20until they left that morning around 8.
18:23When I got home,
18:26the phone rang
18:27and it was Ghislaine.
18:29I'd been there maybe just like an hour
18:31and she said,
18:34hey, Maria,
18:34what do you want?
18:37So I said,
18:38I'm going to the police.
18:40When I called the FBI to report it,
18:42I made Ghislaine Maxwell's role
18:44very clear.
18:46So they have known
18:47what role Ghislaine Maxwell played
18:49since 1996
18:50when I told them.
18:52And I'm so angry
18:53because they allowed it to exist
18:55for 26 years.
18:57They created most of these victims
18:59you're hearing from today.
19:00Almost all of them happened
19:01after my report.
19:06I think one of the great tragedies
19:08of this story
19:09is what happened
19:12or more accurately,
19:13what didn't happen
19:14when Ria Farma
19:16was abused.
19:19Nobody paid attention.
19:21It was one
19:22young girl's
19:23word
19:24against
19:26rich,
19:27powerful,
19:28connected people.
19:29If the prosecutors
19:30had done their job
19:32in the 1990s,
19:34this could have been
19:36stopped,
19:38ended,
19:39without
19:40the hundreds
19:42of young girls
19:44who were then
19:45going to be abused
19:46over the next
19:47two decades.
19:49Dozens,
19:49hundreds
19:50of young girls' lives
19:51could have been saved.
19:52when I was
20:0122 years old,
20:02I was in
20:03massage therapy school.
20:05There was a girl
20:06who told me
20:07that there was
20:07someone hiring
20:09for a position
20:11traveling the world
20:12in a private jet
20:13with private chefs
20:14as a massage therapist.
20:17And that sounded like
20:18a wonderful opportunity.
20:22within
20:24a couple of weeks,
20:27I had travel
20:28arrangements
20:28to fly to New York City
20:29from Los Angeles.
20:31I was excited.
20:32I was a little nervous,
20:33of course.
20:35I had a time
20:37and an address
20:37to go meet,
20:38you know,
20:39Miss Maxwell.
20:42I walk in
20:43and the whole place
20:43is stunning.
20:45And I was asked
20:46to go
20:46up the stairs
20:48and
20:49at the top
20:50of the stairs,
20:51there's a butler
20:53standing there
20:54with full tuxedo
20:55with the vest
20:56and the coattail
20:57and he's standing there
20:59holding a silver tray.
21:00I mean,
21:01I kind of laughed
21:02to myself a bit
21:02because
21:03this is not normal.
21:05This is like
21:06movie type stuff.
21:07A few moments later,
21:09Miss Maxwell
21:10comes out
21:11in a white
21:12bathrobe.
21:13She was asking me
21:15all types of questions
21:16about myself
21:16and we spoke
21:18about things
21:19like our birthdays,
21:22you know,
21:22hers being
21:22the 25th of December,
21:24mine being
21:24the 26th of December
21:26and what that meant
21:27to us growing up.
21:29I spoke about
21:30my dad to her
21:32and she spoke
21:33about her dad
21:33to me.
21:35There was never
21:35a disconnect
21:36in our conversation
21:37and I just thought
21:39how incredible
21:40is this?
21:43Even though
21:43I was in this home
21:45that was beautiful
21:47with this educated woman,
21:49successful woman,
21:50there was never a time
21:51that I felt like
21:53I didn't belong there.
21:55I felt like
21:55I did belong there.
21:56I felt like
21:57I did belong with her.
21:59I felt connected
22:00to this woman
22:01in a sense that
22:04I didn't feel like
22:06I was any different
22:06from her.
22:07after the massage,
22:12she said,
22:13I want you to go
22:14now meet
22:15with my partner,
22:16Jeffrey,
22:17for another portion
22:18of the interview.
22:19And she says
22:20to me directly,
22:21she said,
22:22make sure you give
22:23Jeffrey what he wants
22:24because Jeffrey
22:25always gets
22:26what he wants.
22:30I leave
22:31Geelin's townhouse
22:33with the sense
22:34of accomplishment
22:36and confidence
22:37and, like,
22:40it couldn't have
22:41gone any better.
22:42This was going
22:44to be my future.
22:50I walked
22:51to Jeffrey's home.
22:53I was let in.
22:55And Jeffrey's like,
22:57let's go
22:57to my office.
22:59So,
23:02I'm sitting there
23:05on the couch
23:05and he put
23:08his foot up
23:08on my leg
23:09and asked me
23:10for a foot massage.
23:11I didn't know
23:13that there was going
23:13to be a massage
23:14involved,
23:15but nonetheless,
23:18I start working
23:18on his foot.
23:20He's pushing his foot
23:21further and further
23:22up my leg
23:22to the point
23:23where it's pressing
23:24into my body
23:25in very inappropriate
23:26ways.
23:28So, I got up
23:29and he's, you know,
23:31right behind me
23:32and he assaulted me
23:33there.
23:36I took off
23:38down the stairs
23:39and I walked
23:41out the door.
23:43I didn't look
23:44at the whole way.
23:45It's like I could,
23:46every seam
23:48in the sidewalk,
23:49I was just like
23:49looking at seam
23:50after seam
23:50after seam
23:51and I walked
23:52straight back,
23:53you know,
23:54to where I was staying.
23:57And I sat
23:59in that apartment,
24:00you know,
24:00the remainder
24:01of the night
24:02until the time
24:03that the driver
24:05was taking me
24:05back to the airport.
24:07and as I got
24:09in the car,
24:11he, the driver
24:11said,
24:12oh, we're waiting
24:13on someone else.
24:15And, you know,
24:16this other girl
24:17gets in the car
24:19and she had
24:21asked me
24:22what I had,
24:25was there for.
24:26And she's like,
24:27do you think
24:28it was weird?
24:29And I didn't respond.
24:31She said,
24:32I just want
24:32to go home.
24:35And I didn't
24:35say a word.
24:37the entire
24:38rest of the way.
24:43Everybody wants
24:44to talk about,
24:45well, what happened?
24:46How did he abuse you?
24:47What did he do?
24:49And it's not
24:50focused on Ghislain.
24:51It's focused on him.
24:53And that frustrates me.
24:56I was faced
24:56with the absolute
24:58betrayal
24:59of this woman.
25:01I felt so
25:04connected to Ghislain
25:07in that short
25:08amount of time
25:08in her home.
25:10The betrayal
25:11was just so
25:13deep
25:14because she
25:15got me there.
25:17She got me
25:19to the point
25:19of abuse.
25:20She groomed me
25:22to walk myself
25:24to the home
25:25of a predator
25:26willingly.
25:27She was
25:29beyond a cog
25:31in the wheel
25:32of it.
25:33She facilitated it.
25:35She made
25:37the network
25:37happen.
25:38I think the idea
25:47that, you know,
25:48Epstein and Ghislain
25:49were as rich
25:50and glamorous
25:50as they were,
25:51people treat them
25:52enormously different
25:53than any other
25:55kind of person
25:56who would do
25:57something like this.
25:58I definitely
25:59encountered, you know,
26:00people close to him
26:01who were always,
26:02like, finding
26:03increasingly bizarre
26:04ways to try
26:05to rationalize,
26:07you know,
26:08Epstein's behavior.
26:10Jeffrey had a
26:11severe case
26:11of what's called
26:12satiriasis,
26:13the male counterpart
26:14of infomania.
26:17Yeah.
26:17But you could
26:18not control.
26:19What was his
26:20relationship to that?
26:21I wouldn't surprise,
26:22look, probably a lot
26:23of men have that
26:23for all I know.
26:25Except very few
26:26of them have the money
26:27to, let us say,
26:30to treat themselves
26:31to sex three times
26:34a day with young
26:35girls.
26:36And if there was
26:37only one of them
26:38who did it,
26:39no one would have
26:39noticed,
26:40except he made
26:40an industry out of it.
26:42And why did he make
26:43an industry out of it?
26:44Because Jeffrey was
26:45a very, very, very
26:45sick man.
26:48So were you ever
26:49around for any
26:50instances of these?
26:53No, I never saw
26:54him fool around with.
26:55In fact, Jeffrey was
26:57a very, very close
26:58friend of mine.
26:58Yeah.
26:59And he shielded me
27:00and I never saw
27:02what he did until
27:03finally I did notice
27:04certain things
27:05and that was the end
27:06of having to do
27:06with him.
27:07He never invited me
27:08to the Isle of Babes.
27:10Okay.
27:10Luckily.
27:11I never knew
27:12who was even there.
27:23Pulling up on the boat
27:24to the island,
27:25I just remember it
27:26being just really
27:27magical and so
27:28beautiful.
27:29And it's like,
27:30wow, how could
27:30someone live here?
27:32And it felt kind of
27:34special that we were
27:35going.
27:37And of course,
27:37there was young,
27:38beautiful people there.
27:40I just thought,
27:41you know,
27:42it's just like a getaway
27:43and a fun place
27:43to go to.
27:46But when we left
27:47there, it just was
27:49a place that I never
27:50really wanted to
27:50return to.
27:52And I just couldn't
27:53wait to get,
27:54you know, away.
27:56In 1998,
28:00there was a job
28:01advertised for a
28:03management couple
28:04for an island
28:04in the Caribbean.
28:06And then from our
28:08interviews all the way
28:08through to the end,
28:09there were always
28:10women around.
28:12I'm Miles Alexander
28:13and this is Kathy,
28:15my wife,
28:15for 30-odd years.
28:17I was employed
28:18as the island manager
28:19and Kathy was employed
28:21as the housekeeping
28:22manager.
28:22Miss Jackson did
28:31explain that there
28:32would be a lot
28:33of women around.
