Based on a true story, Corinne (Mary-Louise Parker) is a single mother of twin 5-year-old boys, Steven (Jacob Cherry) and Phillip (Jeremy Shada), who are diagnosed with autism. Public school officials threaten to remove them from school due to their behavior, but through therapy, the boys are able to make major strides in their capabilities. A decade later, teens Steven (Zac Efron) and Phillip (Thomas Lewis) seek to prove they can handle high school while still struggling with their disorder.

00:00:16Lois, what are you doing here?
00:00:18Oh, just getting the woman's angle on this story.
00:00:23The mechanical monster! Look out!
00:00:30Superman.
00:01:00What have you done with the jewels?
00:01:04What have you done with the jewels?
00:01:27Cold?
00:01:30Oh, Stephen. That's beautiful.
00:01:43Almost time to go, guys.
00:01:46There's one more step and she's doomed.
00:01:49One more step and she's doomed.
00:01:52This new doctor is very nice, I think you guys will like her.
00:02:22Hello Ms. Morgan, I'm Dr. Patrick.
00:02:36Hi guys, can you tell me what your name is?
00:02:45And where do you live?
00:02:50You live up there?
00:03:00Ms. Morgan, do they make any sounds at all?
00:03:03Phillip can repeat things verbatim, but never speaks on his own.
00:03:08Stephen, no, no.
00:03:12What does that mean?
00:03:14Too soon to tell, but it means they're capable of speech.
00:03:18At least he is.
00:03:20It means the equipment works anyway.
00:03:23Let's go on to my office, okay?
00:03:26I've been to see half a dozen doctors, they all say the same thing.
00:03:30Boys develop slower than girls.
00:03:33Twins sometimes develop their own language.
00:03:35Be glad your boys are healthy, they'll come around.
00:03:39Why don't we bring them on down, and this shouldn't take more than an hour, okay?
00:03:44The equipment works anyway.
00:03:46That it does.
00:03:48Pay attention to how he lines up the blocks.
00:04:07See what happens when you try to take a turn.
00:04:22This one at least appears to respond to verbal cues from the mother, and he's a pretty good mimic.
00:04:27Full word formation and intonation.
00:04:39Ms. Morgan?
00:04:40Yeah?
00:04:41Why don't you join us?
00:04:42Come on in.
00:04:44You can have a seat right here.
00:04:46Well, it is a rather remarkable find.
00:04:52A find?
00:04:55Fraternal twins with autism.
00:05:01I'm sorry, did you say autistic?
00:05:03Autistic.
00:05:04They both exhibit unusual gaze behavior and odd social affect.
00:05:07We noted obvious sensory issues, hyperacusis for example.
00:05:11Phillip uses immediate echolalia, he repeats what he hears.
00:05:15They don't display stereotypical motor patterns.
00:05:18But the signs of cognitive development that we observed are good prognostic indicators.
00:05:26Autism is a brain disorder that affects social interaction and communication skills.
00:05:41So help me wait a minute.
00:05:51No.
00:05:58No...
00:06:00No...
00:06:04No...
00:06:05I SAID NO!
00:06:08No.
00:06:10No.
00:06:12No.
00:06:14No. No. No, no.
00:06:16This is unacceptable. I'm so sorry.
00:06:18Thank goodness. No.
00:06:20Oh.
00:06:22Oh. I'm sorry.
00:06:24I'm... I'm so sorry.
00:06:28I'm cleaning it up.
00:06:30I'm cleaning it up.
00:06:32You should control your children.
00:06:38Hold this.
00:06:40Let's go.
00:06:44Let's go.
00:06:46Let's go.
00:06:48Let's go.
00:07:08Help! Help! Help! Help!
00:07:10Help! Help!
00:07:16Corrine?
00:07:18Han?
00:07:38Hey.
00:07:42Oh, you're early.
00:07:44Well, your message was kind of weird.
00:07:50The boys have a meltdown?
00:07:54No, I did.
00:07:56I took them to see Dr. Patrick today.
00:08:00The...
00:08:02They're autistic.
00:08:06They have autism.
00:08:10God.
00:08:12I don't know what to do.
00:08:20I tried. All those doctors.
00:08:22They'll never get better.
00:08:26They'll never go away.
00:08:28They'll never...
00:08:30have normal lives.
00:08:32Neither will we.
00:08:34Not even close.
00:08:41I see.
00:08:50This isn't fair.
00:08:54I fell in love with you.
00:08:56I didn't sign up for this...
00:08:58autistic boys and...
00:09:00What?
00:09:02No, you're right.
00:09:03You didn't.
00:09:08It's not fair.
00:09:09And you didn't sign up for it.
00:09:13After all, you're not their father, are you?
00:09:15I can't do it, Corinne.
00:09:27I just need to be honest with you.
00:09:32I'm sorry.
00:09:33I'm sorry.
00:09:36I'm sorry.
00:09:41Wake up, Elvis.
00:09:43Time to start the day again.
00:09:48Begin the process.
00:09:50Trading up your heavy hands.
00:09:53All that fruit.
00:09:54Sweet nectarine.
00:09:55Your fingernails are filthy.
00:09:56And your chugging gasoline just falls.
00:09:58One more day.
00:09:59One more day.
00:10:00In the sun.
00:10:01In the sun.
00:10:02You're gonna be a pop star someday.
00:10:13And the sun.
00:10:15You're going to be a pop star someday.
00:10:19Don't lie, Elvis.
00:10:21What about regret?
00:10:25You ain't seen nothing quite like her.
00:10:29At least you haven't yet.
00:10:45Smarter you think you are, the more tired you get.
00:10:51You've been awake for three straight weeks.
00:10:55How easily you forget.
00:11:01How to count.
00:11:03How to breathe.
00:11:07Consider all the possibility.
00:11:13Find.
00:11:17So you see, when you add an E onto the end of some words, it will change the vowel sound.
00:11:31It will change from a short vowel, a short A like in cap, to a long A in cape.
00:11:37And that's what these little symbols mean.
00:11:41A little curlicue hat on the A when it's a short A, cap, and a straight line over the long A, cape.
00:11:47Oh, is this your classroom?
00:11:49I have a hall pass.
00:11:51I went to the bathroom.
00:11:53Do you know Philip and Steven?
00:11:55Philip and Steven?
00:11:57They're really weird.
00:11:59It will change from a short vowel, a short A like in cap.
00:12:01To a long A in cape.
00:12:03And that's what these little symbols mean.
00:12:05A little curlicue hat on the A when it's a short A, cap.
00:12:07And a straight line over the long A, cape.
00:12:11Oh, do you know Phillip and Steven?
00:12:14Phillip and Steven?
00:12:16They're really weird.
00:12:18You can do it with people's names.
00:12:20Sam.
00:12:23Sam has a short A.
00:12:25You put an E on the end, and it's same.
00:12:41Hey.
00:12:55Hey.
00:12:56I took a little money out, just what I had when we met.
00:12:59Don't worry about it.
00:13:00It's OK.
00:13:02I've got it.
00:13:09You sure this is what you want?
00:13:11Don't act like you're not relieved.
00:13:14Well, it's not fair.
00:13:16I was honest with you, Karine.
00:13:17Would you prefer it otherwise?
00:13:18I'd prefer it if...
00:13:22The boys are out there.
00:13:23Do you want to say goodbye or something?
00:13:29Never mind.
00:13:30It might upset them.
00:13:33Bye.
00:13:41They're all young people.
00:13:42What?
00:13:43I'm sorry.
00:13:59I'm sorry.
00:14:00I'm sorry.
00:14:01I'm sorry.
00:14:02I'm sorry.
00:14:03I'm sorry.
00:14:03I'm sorry.
00:14:04I'm sorry.
00:14:05I'm sorry.
00:14:06I'm sorry.
00:14:07I'm sorry.
00:14:08I just got to be ready for this.
00:14:09Oh, I get scared, too.
00:14:13We're gonna be all right, fellas.
00:14:36How much?
00:14:38I know that it's been empty for a while.
00:14:44Why don't you rent it to me and I can make some improvements?
00:14:51Okay, well...
00:14:54You'll get back to me then, right?
00:15:01Oh, Steven.
00:15:02Oh, damn it, the clock.
00:15:04No, Steven, this doesn't belong to us.
00:15:07You've got...
00:15:15It's okay, here.
00:15:17It's all right, we'll get another one.
00:15:19Okay?
00:15:20It's okay.
00:15:21It's okay.
00:15:22It's okay.
00:15:23All right?
00:15:24It's okay.
00:15:25Oh...
00:15:27Okay, let's go.
00:15:28I'm gonna get another one.
00:15:30I'm gonna get another one.
00:15:32I'm gonna get another one.
00:15:33You can't get another one.
00:15:34Whatever's going on in that beautiful head of yours, it sure is remarkable.
00:15:59You understand all the terms of the agreement?
00:16:01Yes.
00:16:02And I guess that's it then.
00:16:04Congratulations.
00:16:12Ta-da!
00:16:13Our new home!
00:16:15What do you think?
00:16:17Huh?
00:16:22Come in.
00:16:23Come on in.
00:16:24Come on in.
00:16:25Okay.
00:16:26All right.
00:16:27We'll just wait here until you're ready.
00:16:28Until you're ready.
00:16:31You want to see your new bedroom?
00:16:32It's super cold.
00:16:33No?
00:16:34All right.
00:16:35I'll just wait here.
00:16:36It's all right.
00:16:37Bye.
00:16:38You're going to like it.
00:16:39It's all right.
00:16:40It's all right.
00:16:41You're going to like it.
00:16:42It's all right.
00:16:43It's all right.
00:16:44Bye.
00:16:45You're going to like it.
00:17:12You're going to like it.
00:17:13It's all right.
00:17:14It's all right.
00:17:15You're going to like it.
00:17:16It's all right.
00:17:17It's all right.
00:17:18It's all right.
00:17:19It's all right.
00:17:20I'm calling regarding your ad for babysitting services.
00:17:24Right.
00:17:25I have a situation.
00:17:26I have twins and they're autistic.
00:17:31I have a situation. I have twins and they're autistic.
00:17:37Right, okay. Thanks. Bye.
00:17:40I'm wondering, do you take special needs kits? Autistic. Oh, never mind. Okay, thanks.
00:18:10Bye.
00:18:32Um, I should be home most nights by seven?
00:18:35Mm-mm. Has to be earlier.
00:18:37I belong to a Jeopardy! Club and I have not missed a night in three years.
00:18:42Okay. Um, 6.30ish?
00:18:46You want me to make them dinner after I pick them up from school?
00:18:49That'd be great.
00:18:51Well, I'll give you a list of stuff that I like to eat.
00:18:56Are you sure you're up for this?
00:18:59I told you that I have taken care of three mentally retarded kids for four years.
00:19:04They're not retarded.
00:19:06I'm up for it is all I'm saying.
00:19:08That's all I'm saying.
00:19:30I guess you're the one.
00:19:31All right.
00:19:32You ready?
00:19:33Let's go.
00:19:34Go on.
00:19:35Go, go.
00:19:36Go, go.
00:19:37Go, go.
00:19:38All right.
00:19:39You ready?
00:19:40Let's go.
00:19:41Hi, boys.
00:19:42Hi.
00:19:43Hi.
00:19:44Miss Morgan.
00:19:45Hi.
00:19:46Hi.
00:19:47Steven and Phillip can be a bit of a handful sometimes, you know?
00:19:49Don't I know it.
00:19:50Yeah, and while there are some things that they do very well, I'm just a little concerned
00:19:51with that.
00:19:52I'm not going to get too much for you.
00:19:53It's going to be really fun.
00:19:54You're just going to have to have to go.
00:19:56But I know it's worth it.
00:19:57No, I'm not going to have to go.
00:19:58But I'm not going to have to go.
00:19:59You're not going to have to go.
00:20:00No, I'm not going to have to go.
00:20:01You're not going to have to go.
00:20:02Yeah, I'm going to have to go.
00:20:03Yeah, I'm going to have to go.
00:20:04All right.
00:20:05You ready?
00:20:06Let's go.
00:20:07Go on.
00:20:08Go, go, go.
00:20:09Go, go, go, go, go.
00:20:10Hi, boys.
00:20:11Hi, miss Morgan.
00:20:12Yeah, and, uh, while there are some things that they do very well,
00:20:17I'm just a little concerned that they're not where they should be, academically speaking.
00:20:22They'll come around. They just need a little time to get used to it, is all.
00:20:25Yeah, but, well, I, bye.
00:20:34I realize you don't have anything now, but could you hold on to my resume just for the future
00:20:39in case something comes up or anything?
00:20:42We'd be glad to.
00:20:43Okay.
00:20:48Ms. Morgan, I was approached by the principal,
00:20:51and I wonder if you might meet with some of us, say, tomorrow afternoon about four.
00:20:57Concerning what?
00:20:58We'd just like to speak with you about the boys.
00:21:03Stephen hasn't spoken a word, and Philip merely repeats what others say to him.
00:21:09They're extremely shy.
00:21:10Well, are they like that at home?
00:21:12Is there a husband or a boyfriend in the house?
00:21:15Why? Is that important?
00:21:16Well, they have these outbursts, as if they're angry.
00:21:20Why would they be angry?
00:21:21How do you discipline the boys?
00:21:23What exactly are you getting at?
00:21:25You needn't be defensive, Ms. Morgan.
00:21:27If you have something you'd like to ask me, I'd rather you just came out with it.
00:21:31We don't want to find ourselves for having to explain why we ignored signs of possible abuse.
00:21:37Are you suggesting I somehow hurt my boys?
00:21:41Their behavior suggests some sort of trauma in the past that's brought on some of the shocking...
00:21:47They're autistic!
00:21:48I took them to a specialist a couple of weeks ago.
00:21:57I didn't know until then.
00:21:58How could you not know?
00:22:00We'd seen a dozen doctors.
00:22:01They said nothing was wrong.
00:22:02They have such remarkable talents.
00:22:07They deserve to be in a normal classroom with other kids.
00:22:13It's just that it's impossible to teach them in a normal...
00:22:18A regular classroom, Ms. Morgan.
00:22:21This school may not be the best place for them.
00:22:27Do all kids who aren't perfect get kicked out of your school?
00:22:30Hmm...
00:22:36But...
00:22:37Or maybe it's a work for you.
00:22:38They're Monthly before
00:22:40You don't have a work for me.
00:22:41You don't have a plan
00:22:42Also, let you have a plan
00:22:47You know,
00:22:49You have to fill
00:22:51Sit down
00:23:52Oh, looks so official.
00:24:00You create the legal letterhead and everything?
00:24:04Wow.
00:24:05It's not too shrill?
00:24:07No, no, it's great.
00:24:09You've even got the lawyer speak down.
00:24:12Just vague enough to be intimidating
00:24:13with all the whereases and pursuant twos.
00:24:17I did some research.
00:24:18The boys are entitled to more than I thought.
00:24:22For once, I'm glad I pay taxes.
00:24:30What's wrong?
00:24:32When they were little, I used to lie in bed at night
00:24:34and think about who they'd be when I grew up
00:24:37and how proud I'd be of them for succeeding.
00:24:46Now I just want them to be safe and happy.
00:24:49I don't have any expectations anymore.
00:24:51I think that's what hurts so much.
00:24:56One day you might be surprised.
00:25:00I'd be up for a nice surprise.
00:25:03Well, that letter is a great start, Karane.
00:25:06Now you go out there and you give them hell
00:25:08and you let them know who they're dealing with.
00:25:10Now where's the sugar?
00:25:15The mouse heard the lion's loud roar
00:25:18and went to see what was the matter.
00:25:20The lion cried and cried with pain.
00:25:23Cried and cried with pain.
00:25:26And looked at the little mouse
00:25:29and asked the little mouse
00:25:30if he would pull the thorn from his paw.
00:25:33The little mouse grabbed hold of that thorn
00:25:36and cried and cried with pain.
00:25:39He grabbed hold of the thorn
00:25:44and pulled it out of the lion's paw.
00:25:48The board's suggestion is that
00:25:50we enroll the boys in the individual education plan
00:25:53at Middleton Mental Hospital
00:25:54for their outpatient day school.
00:25:59You're kidding.
00:26:00No, ma'am.
00:26:00We sincerely believe that's what's best for them.
00:26:03I suggest you read this very carefully, Dr. Hardwick.
00:26:12My boys will have a normal education
00:26:19regardless of you and your asinine policies.
00:26:22I'll take you all the way to the Supreme Court if I have to.
00:26:25Oh, no.
00:26:32Was there still skin on that one?
00:26:34Here, give it back.
00:26:35I'll peel you another one.
00:26:44There you go, honey.
00:26:45There you go.
00:26:46See, isn't it so much better under here?
00:27:09It's so much more fun.
00:27:13Just your crazy mom
00:27:16forgot to pay the electric bill.
00:27:18Crazy mom.
00:27:21Yeah, your crazy mom
00:27:22better find a job soon.
00:27:23Can I help you?
00:27:44Corrine Morgan?
00:27:46Yes.
00:27:47Hi, I'm Wayne Cosgrove.
00:27:49School board sent me.
00:27:50Are you an attorney?

00:28:18Look, I'm gonna work with your boys
00:28:20and depending on their level of functionality,
00:28:23teach them to speak
00:28:24and eventually read and write.
00:28:27To speak?
00:28:28I understand they have a great set of lungs.

00:28:40Do they understand what you say?
00:28:43Good.
00:28:44And they get it.
00:28:45Now all we have to do
00:28:46is teach them to express it.
00:28:48How long might that take?

00:28:52It's a long, slow process.
00:28:54But we'll work on it

00:59:57Thirteen.
01:00:04I know you're a small office and you don't need any new agents, but I have accounting experience and I can do your bookkeeping.
01:00:16We do need a bookkeeper and might be able to throw you a listing here and there, but that's the best I can do for somebody who has to work from home.
01:00:25That's great. That's great.
01:00:28Welcome aboard.
01:00:29Thank you. Thanks.
01:00:33They what?
01:00:35Oh, you're kidding. I'll be right there.
01:00:48What happened?
01:00:49They were going to hurt Jennifer. They pushed her pretty hard.
01:00:52Hold a sec, fellas. Let me talk to your mom.
01:00:54Rick and Brian were taunting Steven and Phillip and calling them retards like they always do.
01:00:59When I started yelling at them, they pushed me down.
01:01:02And these two bruisers let them have it. I asked them where they learned to punch like that.
01:01:06Rocky III, I pitted fools.
01:01:09Look, I think what they did was honorable, but you understand, of course, I have to discourage it.
01:01:14You punched them?
01:01:17Oh, they were hurting Jennifer.
01:01:19Thanks. See you guys. You guys are my heroes.
01:01:28Boys, back to class, please.
01:01:34Miss Morgan, there's something else. Please, have a seat.
01:01:37Uh, Dick Emery, our music teacher, said he saw Phillip playing guitar last weekend quite well.
01:01:45It's a savant skill. He's always had a really incredible ear.
01:01:48Oh, well, he suggested that you enroll him in a program at a private music school for gifted kids.
01:01:53Uh, I imagine those schools are probably pretty expensive, huh?
01:01:57No, there's no tuition. He just has to audition for them.
01:02:00Do they take kids, like?
01:02:02Emery feels that he has a gift.
01:02:04Yeah.
01:02:13Can I tell you something?
01:02:16I haven't felt this, uh...
01:02:24in a long time.
01:02:30Phillip has had an audition for our music school tomorrow.
01:02:33I would love it if you would come with us.

01:04:23Good morning, Philip.

01:04:52Would you like a few minutes to prepare?
01:05:08Oh, oh, oh, it's all right. It's all right. It's all right.
01:05:10It's all right. It's all right.

01:09:23I don't see why not.
01:09:26So, I'm going to play a song.
01:09:29Will you listen to it?

01:11:37because I am one finely tuned machine.
