00:00babies or animals but what if they're baby animals
00:06it was only born this morning on this all new season welcome back to the ever-changing world
00:16of charonga where you'll witness things you never thought possible you can actually hear her breathe
00:25and meet new faces oh hi buddy you'll never forget so good it's time to discover oh my god exactly
00:36who's who in this zoo
00:40on this episode they say there's a first time for everything probably do both front together
00:49both back together yeah but chelsea a little bit nervous seriously girl adrenaline kicking in
00:55it's a bit more than i expected did you have to pick this chels just be mindful you're on
01:02danger side of the animal round two the brush turkeys managed to get it off the tree it basically
01:09just fell apart as taronga's 18 i promise fred and john know what they're doing step back into the
01:16ring with an old foe it's gonna have to go higher than that and if you're a galapagos tortoise
01:22she's 100 next year yeehaw we'll see what her ovaries are doing it seems you're never too old
01:28hopefully before too long you'll see some eggs and you know hatchlings at the end of all that
01:32in taronga's african savannah as a keeper it's tamara's job to keep a close watch over an iconic
01:50carnivore family oh dusty but make no mistake they're also closely watching her
01:57so we have a family group of seven lions mum maya dad ato and their five offspring
02:05maya has a really great relationship with ato they're quite bonded
02:11so maya's 13 now she's already had three litters and she may be coming into season
02:18we don't want the males fighting and the males may want to mate with her which obviously we
02:25do not want when maya is in season all the males find her pretty irresistible there's a little bit
02:33of management that we have to implement so to avoid any fights or an unplanned pregnancy
02:41the taronga team have been using a contraceptive implant on maya it's been about 14 months since
02:47her last implant and maya's actually shown some signs that her contraceptive implant is wearing off
02:53the implant stops maya from coming into season which also stops the males from showing too much
03:01interest in her as soon as we saw ato starting to guard her we were like there's going to be issues
03:09in the group here the fear is if one of the younger boys gets too close it could lead to a violent clash
03:17so for all the lion's safety maya needs to be separated from the rest of the pride we need to spring
03:26into action she needs an implant and she needs an implant really soon cue the team at the taronga
03:34wildlife hospital i haven't done a line in a while vet francis will be leading the procedure
03:41today we're going to do an anaesthetic on maya our lion and this time the animal hospital is venturing
03:51inside the lion's den the implant it's behind the left ear it'll be shaved down surgical scrub drugs from
04:00safe lions are dangerous animal when we're doing a procedure like this we're always very conscious of
04:09safety have we got the darts we're hopefully not going to need darts at all but if we don't have
04:15them ready then we will while maya is sleeping francis is also going to take this rare opportunity
04:24to squeeze in some additional procedures we need to get some blood from her and hopefully some urine
04:31and do a full physical exam she has had some dental work done earlier on in the year so we'll have a look
04:38at those two and if necessary i might take some dental x-rays and keep us do the hobbling and
04:44the chaining or am i expected to be doing that um that will be you and francis probably cool so we've
04:49got chelsea working with us today chelsea's a highly experienced nurse but this is going to be a
04:55first time doing a procedure like this on a dangerous animal it'll be as tight as it possibly can be
05:01yeah on the line so she'll be working closely with me and helping me do what i need to do we'll
05:08probably do both front together both back together yeah and more than likely be the back one to the
05:15wall okay but could go either way okay cool my background is primarily in vet nursing in a general
05:23practice so mostly cats and dogs much smaller cats but i'm really excited for yeah the first experience
05:28with a big cat today for chelsea this is the calm before the storm and the storm is coming for a
05:37dangerous animal procedure it's important that we focus once the procedure starts i want everybody
05:44paying attention to the animal listening out for each other and focusing on what we're doing and
05:49you know that's the way that we work each and every habitat in taronga is designed to cater precisely
06:00to the species that calls it home from african savannas to lush forests the perfect habitat for
06:09taronga's family of red pandas so our red pandas they're actually struggling out in the wild
06:15they're listed as endangered they could be anywhere as little as 10 000 of them left in the wild which
06:22is pretty scary but try as taronga might to keep this home exclusive to these little rare pandas this
06:31particular habitat is also home to another uninvited red and black critter you guessed it it's time to
06:41welcome back the brush turkey the brush turkeys are actually an australian native um so you will find
06:48them all around our homes here and here at taronga zoo yep keep an eye on those turkeys buddy for some
06:56time now those brush turkeys have been stealing our red panda food now they're on a specialty diet we need
07:02to make sure they're getting all of their nutritional needs met and if i've got these turkeys coming along and
07:07sometimes stealing half of their breakfast that's a real issue it is indeed and that's why several
07:13months ago taronga's carnivore keepers turned to the a team two intrepid gents to help quell this
07:22brush turkey rebellion fred and john they're our enrichment volunteers and they help us build
07:28different items such as these amazing feeders when fred and john were first recruited
07:34we know why it doesn't work they studied their adversary
07:43plotted these are no good because the brush turkeys are just feeding themselves um plotted again we
07:51think this one will work better and voila the brush turkey proof red panda feeder in all its glory
07:59open straight up yes easy easy peasy she can get in there and the brush turkeys can't but six short
08:07months later this is what i've got left i know we're gonna get some more made yep the brush turkeys
08:19strike back and we're back at square one but these boys aren't going down without a fight ladies and
08:26gentlemen let's get ready to rumble in the green corner it's fred and john and in the red and black
08:36corner the brush turkey round two look what the brush turkeys have done to our feeder so we're going to have
08:45to scrap that completely the major challenge is to outsmart the brush turkeys so what cunning plan
08:55have you got in mind this time lads new design well similar design oh right well the lid's good so we
09:04don't have to think about that no let's good let's good they can't get into the feeder we know that
09:11the lid works fine yeah the lid's good got it what we're going to have to do is stop the brush turkeys
09:20taking the feeder off the tree ah now we're talking this is what we do we do a prototype
09:29more robust stronger under the tree so that it can't be manipulated off
09:43it has to be panda friendly so that goes that way easy for the panda to use
09:50but very difficult for the brush duck to use you're definitely on to something lads one food tray
09:59yep looks good it's a lot stronger it should be really successful we try it out
10:15back at the taronga wildlife hospital we're going to load up shortly just getting a few more things
10:21okay the team are preparing to head straight into the lion's den so today may we'll be having an
10:27anaesthetic to be re-implanted with a contraceptive implant so the keepers out there yet whenever
10:34we do a procedure like this in the animal's den we bring the hospital to them so it's a lot of gear
10:40that we have to bring with us you're going to work with me i need gloves yep today is the first time
10:46vet nurse chelsea will be up close and personal with a rather large 140 kilo lion what size glove is
10:55francis my role today will be to be helping francis out with whatever she asks for and needs
11:01with the ice brick inside that calico bag all this stuff has to come in the van we've got emergency
11:08drugs in the red bag yep it's a whole different ballpark doing it down there obviously there's an
11:14element of control that you lose you just don't want any unexpected complications welcome everyone
11:20it's a dangerous animal ga today for maya she's getting an implant francis is running the ga guiding
11:28us through the steps of the procedures it's my responsibility to make sure that she's appropriately
11:35chemically restrained during the procedure a chemical restraint is basically vet speak for a
11:41general anaesthetic flea and re are going to do the anaesthetic and chelsea is the nurse helping me
11:49i'm going to be injecting her with a pole once she's injected we're happy for you to come into
11:54the building and monitor her whenever we do these procedures we plan for what could go wrong i'm going
12:05to be assessing when she's safe before we all go in once the procedure starts i want everybody paying
12:12attention to the animal listening out for each other if anything happens or if i'm concerned i
12:19might say everybody get out of the den all right everyone ready it's all good thank you hopefully
12:26maya looks super stable throughout the anaesthetic and we don't need to intervene in any other way but
12:31yeah that's the plan 40 milligrams per mil literally ready to go as soon as she's injected
12:42we'll let you know the team can see that maya is already agitated so only two keepers are entering the
12:52den to try and keep the lion as calm as possible maya hey darling and it looks like kari one of maya's
13:02sons is also well aware that this isn't a normal day he's very curious
13:08inside the den tamara has hit her mark the sedative is in okay the team move into position
13:27chelsea just watch out because i'm going to poke her can we have everybody quiet
13:32i can't reach her head i still can't see her eyes which leaves bet frances with only one option so
13:48what i might do is just me go in yep so give me a clear exit yep
14:02still to come no room for error chelsea if i say everyone out you get out first tension
14:09is building in the lion's den we do not want to be inside that den if the lion wakes up
14:14judgment day lids the same but much more solid as taronga's dynamic duo try to outsmart
14:22some real turkeys let's head in and just what's made nala this happy
14:32yes it's the season for babies at charonga good job
14:40and in this race to bring all these new faces into the world for one particular species slow and
14:48steady is the only way to go this is molly mabel who is in her mid 50s which is pretty young for
14:57galapagos tortoise they hit maturity around 30 and they should live well past 150 years so
15:04she's just in that prime of her life but molly from taronga western plains zoo isn't the winner
15:11when it comes to being the oldest resident that title goes to 99 year old audrey audrey's just come
15:19over to me so i'm just going to give her a little scratch and in response she's going to go into what we
15:24call a finch pose which is where the tortoise stands up nice and tall and very still they almost
15:30go in a little trans cook your mama so we utilize finch pose as a conditioning tool so when our vets
15:38come down they can take bloods from the tortoise do ultrasounds take x-rays the tortoise are really
15:44happy they're focusing on the sensation that pat is creating rather than their vet procedure that's
15:49happening this finch pose is about to be tested as caitlin has noticed something unusual with both
15:58molly mabel and audrey over the past couple weeks we have seen our females deposit unshelled eggs or
16:05yolks that don't look very healthy so we've notified our vet team and they're going to do a routine
16:09ultrasound it could take a while to get these two tortoises to the vet clinic so today the entire clinic
16:18well vet ben is coming to them we'll scan them both and and see if we can't get some more
16:23information as to as to what's going on reproductively for them thanks ben and mid-50s molly is patient
16:31number one just pop some coupling gel on just to help the ultrasound ben is using a portable ultrasound
16:40machine to find molly's ovaries located deep in her abdomen
16:49so you can see the spheres see the see this the moons sort of popping up they're all follicles what we
16:57really look for is follicles that reach a threshold size because when they get to a certain size we know
17:03that they're going to ovulate both ovaries will grow a number of follicles which are destined to
17:09become eggs after a tortoise ovulates
17:15in giant tortoises the eggs are supported by a large yellow yolk it's fertilized by by sperm and then
17:23a shell is laid down over that and then that's subsequently laid
17:26that the egg won't survive if the shell isn't hard and healthy let's see there there's a sphere
17:37and it's got an irregular kind of hazy outline and then in the middle of it it's dark so that tells
17:43me that it's yolk that is being degraded and taken away so that's a follicle that will not ovulate
17:50and that's not good news for molly
17:58deep in the lion's den at taronga give me a clear exit yep lioness maya has been injected with an
18:06anesthetic to prepare her for a contraceptive implant the adrenaline kicking in it's a bit more
18:13than i expected the team are on edge while vet francis checks to see if this large cat is sleeping
18:22these are dangerous animals it is a dangerous animal procedure and it's always very important to
18:26make sure that the lion is absolutely asleep before anyone enters or approaches let's put the cargo net on
18:32her overall i think that went really well her anesthetic was fine so tamara did a great job
18:38i'm going to pull her over to here so be aware of what's going on can we get the mask on her the
18:49mask will deliver an anesthetic gas to help keep maya asleep during the procedures possibly if we use
18:57the smaller mask if it'll fit vet nurse chelsea a new recruit to the team has been assigned to assist
19:05vet francis but you guys all need to know where your exit is it's really important that nurses
19:12and vets work well together i saw us running as vets were very reliant on the nurses and chelsea
19:20has skills i don't have but this is the first time chelsea has worked so close to such a large
19:27and dangerous predator chelsea shave a patch behind her ear
19:32working with a lion is very different they're such big animals and such powerful animals
19:39the size of the feet the size of the teeth is pretty spectacular
19:44shelves just be mindful you're on danger side of the animal it's okay but just be quick there
19:52just learning what the normal is for a lion when it comes to heart rate blood pressure all that sort
19:57of stuff having to learn the entire spectrum is is pretty crazy i'm going to get in there to put my
20:03implant in yep get ready to give me a drape
20:13scalpel blade
20:18the contraceptive capsule will be implanted under the skin behind the lion's ear
20:24whenever we do these procedures we're very conscious of the time that it takes to do things
20:31we always want to do things as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of you know the animal waking up
20:36as its drugs wear off a blink reflex she has yeah a blink reflex suggests that the lion is gradually
20:45becoming more aware and alert her heart rate is 160 it went from 169 and now it's jumping up to 179
20:53that's quite high the elevated heart rate confirms that maya isn't sleeping deeply enough
21:01for francis to continue the procedure turn it down to one and a half
21:08yep rest rate still 20. with the anesthetic gas adjusted maya should now begin sleeping much more
21:17deeply so i need my implants quite a bit of blink there but francis still needs to implant a capsule
21:26directly behind the blinking lion's ear so just monitor her everyone paying attention we do not
21:34want to be inside that den if the lion wakes up just watch it while i stick this in yeah
21:39over in what i like to call red panda land is it juicy taronga's volunteer gurus john and fred have
21:53learnt that their original turkey-proof panda feeders aren't so turkey-proof the brush turkeys managed to get
22:01it off the tree and it dropped to the ground it basically just fell apart these brazen brush turkeys
22:10have adapted and overcome it seems nothing can slow them down
22:15but now the weight is over the new improved brush turkey-proof panda feeder 2.0 0.2 0.1
22:31the new feeder explain it to me similar to the existing one except now it has a box around it yeah
22:41lids the same but this is much more solid well i gotta say it doesn't look much different but
22:48some early testing did reveal a very uninterested brush turkey i guess that's something let's head in
22:57this would be a nice spot here
23:06what's happening at the back here we're thinking a new mounting system as well yeah they cannot get
23:12it off the tree fingers crossed yeah it's gonna have to go a little bit higher than that
23:19i promise fred and john know what they're doing
23:21while the team are focused on installing the new mounting system their cunning adversary moves in
23:32that was close too close you try it out let's see how he goes
23:40keisha can you come over here the moment of truth hopefully the turkeys can't get in
23:47but houston we have a problem if the red pandas can't either enter keisha so even though it looks
23:55quite similar he hasn't seen this particular prototype
24:07it could work well done good work good boy uh houston there is no problem he's using his paw doing a good job
24:18good work he seems to put his head in there and get the pear out really easily
24:25i think the prototype is great i think we should run with it
24:29those turkeys don't stand a chance with getting those feeders off anyway that's the plan
24:35hopefully it works fred john i think you've done a great job thank you
24:40yes lads on behalf of the taronga red panda clan we salute you but hold on don't go anywhere gents
24:51here comes your next mission should you choose to accept it she absolutely loves toys one of the
24:57biggest challenges with nala is trying to think of some new enrichment items somehow mixing her love
25:01for toys with some of those natural behaviors nala the sea lion is one smart cookie which is why
25:09the enrichment that we make for them needs to be challenging for them because they're
25:12they can work things out pretty quickly
25:14this time have fred and john finally met their match you're very clever aren't you
25:22meanwhile back in the lion's den oxygen back on vet francis is about to implant a contraceptive
25:31behind maya's ear everyone paying attention but it appears that the lion
25:36is a light sleeper despite the anesthetic gas the blink reflex again
25:46just watch it while i stick this in okay i can have some glue yep the implant is finally in
25:57so she's breathing okay but the implant is just the beginning there's still plenty more to do before
26:12maya is woken up so right now i'm just taking the opportunity of doing a physical exam on her
26:18she's got pretty amazing claws very strong look at that
26:31chelsea let's try and get some blood yep
26:39there are multiple signs that an animal might be you know waking up from its anesthetic a little bit
26:43like ears twitching or blinking or movement um increase in heart rate breath anything like that
26:51no jaw tone no blink okay let's go for
26:57messing the board veins so just
27:02so just don't don't move yeah is her character of her breathing changed at all
27:07respiration is increasing where's my syringe the sensation on the lion's leg could be enough
27:17to start waking her up and what about everything else is she blinking yes she has a significant
27:24blink reflex okay let's see if we can get her urine moz can you help chels get the ultrasound please yes
27:32vet francis vet francis will need to insert a long catheter into the lion's bladder we're going to have
27:40to sort of tip her onto her back a bit so let's just watch her really carefully you're in the dangerous position
27:54a little bit nervous but obviously you just have to have faith that the animal's asleep it's fair to
27:59say that inserting a long tube into the lion's bladder probably isn't the most comfortable of
28:06procedures chelsea yep if i say everyone out
28:11can you get out first
28:17at charonga western plains zoo all right my dear vet ben is doing a reproductive ultrasound
28:25on 55 year old molly the galapagos tortoise it's got an irregular kind of hazy outline and then in
28:32the middle of it it's dark so that tells me that it's yolk that is being degraded and taken away
28:38so that's a follicle that will not ovulate so far sadly ben hasn't found a viable follicle
28:46that's likely to become a healthy hard-shelled egg but we'll have another look on the other side and see
28:52what we can see i can see that this follicle's diameter is over four centimeters so that tells
29:00me that that follicle is earmarked to continue to develop and then to eventually ovulate and then
29:06transport those eggs down to the to the back end of the tortoise where they're laid well that's good news
29:13while some of molly's eggs aren't viable there are still some that are
29:18as for the unshelled eggs molly has been laying and keeper caitlin has been finding it's not unusual
29:28for them to lay the occasional abnormal egg and so i think that's what we've seen with molly
29:34there are no shelled eggs there ready to go but it looks like her reproductive processes are starting
29:39to to kind of activate and she's on the way that's molly in the clear but what about the much older audrey
29:48she's 100 next year yeehaw okay we'll see what her ovaries are doing so this is where non-invasive
29:58imaging technology is fantastic for zoo work i can see that the oviduct is thicker and it's being
30:06infiltrated by fluid so it suggests that her reproductive processes are are in motion for this season
30:13so despite a few small hiccups both of these golden oldies are still primed for laying plenty of healthy
30:23eggs oh my girl and doing their bit albeit a bit slower for taronga's baby boom keep an eye out
30:33hopefully before too long you'll see some nesting behavior and some eggs and and you know hatchlings
30:37at the end of all that thanks so much ben no problem our pleasure over at the great southern
30:47oceans habitat keeper ben is loading up on treats for a slick and smart taronga resident nala hey lovely
30:59nala was born here at taronga as a part of the breeding program that we have for this species
31:03she's about 16 years old at the moment it's a bit rainy and during her time at taronga she's also
31:10been a mum twice which is really good for that breeding program that we have here having that
31:14insurance population for that for this beautiful species it's a keeper's job to care for an animal's
31:20physical and mental health australian sea lions are known to be really intelligent you're very
31:26clever aren't you yes she's really interactive she loves chewing on things
31:34and she absolutely loves toys and one of the biggest challenges with nala is trying to think
31:39of some new enrichment items and create new enrichment items somehow mixing her love
31:43for toys with some of those natural behaviors did someone say enrichment okay rock and roll well that
31:50can only mean one thing so that goes on there tape for
31:58eventually by now you should know that fred and john are taronga's enrichment volunteers though
32:06i like to think of them as taronga's chief troubleshooters the keepers come up with ideas
32:11they'll see something and say can you guys make this then we just screw that
32:17and bolt it together they're making nala's new toy it's a sea lion feeding fish spinner hang on it's a
32:25spinning fish sea lion feeder no it's a speedy fish it's a fish feeding sea lion spinner we're just
32:32assembling this feeder for the seals well nala is technically a sea lion but yeah yeah let's just
32:41call it a seal feeder please it's not just a case of giving the seal food the seal has got to work
32:48for it seals are incredibly intelligent sea lion which is why the enrichment that we make for them
32:54needs to be challenging for them because they're they can work things out pretty quickly so just how
32:59does this contraption work this is our pretend fish so the idea is keepers to put a fishing and then
33:07it's up to the seal to spin it and get the fish out it's sea light um forget it all right ready to go
33:15yeah ready to go yeah we know it's going to work it's just how well it works is is the problem and
33:22there's only one way to find out all right it's looking good i'll go get another we never know
33:28with new enrichment devices sometimes we think seals are going to be bad enrichment devices and
33:32end up smashing it um sometimes we think seals are going to smash the enrichment device and then
33:35they struggle a little bit more she's sussing it out already as we can see
33:40aren't you clever nails she knows exactly what she's doing nala cracked it pretty quickly
33:54in fact nala cracked it a bit too quickly good job but there's definitely some improvements that can
34:00be made on it looks like fred and john are yet again heading back to that drawing board so that'll
34:06be uh plan b but you can bet they won't be beaten hopefully they can come up with something a little
34:12bit more challenging for her how are we going to get this to do that it doesn't always work sometimes
34:19we make really great failures but occasionally we get everything right let's see what the seal said
34:30in the carnivore section at taronga so let's just watch her really carefully
34:36vet francis is delicately drawing urine from a sleeping lion's bladder for some routine testing
34:44it's a very little bladder
34:50nice the lion maya is anesthetized but her levels of consciousness appear to rise and fall
34:59with each additional procedure how are you going there flea respiration's increased but there's no
35:05other reflexes and there's still one particular exam that francis wants to perform inside the lion's
35:13mouth she has had dental work done earlier on in the year some root canals done on her big canine it
35:20so we'll have a look at those two and make sure that everything's going okay so the dental x-ray machines
35:27how long will that take to set up i mean i can do that now
35:34have a quick look at her teeth
35:36how long since her induction dose 8 58 it was so bang on one hour passing the one hour mark indicates
35:57the sedative's effects will soon be wearing off i have to take this off to make things even trickier
36:06in order to check maya's teeth the anesthetic gas mask used to help keep maya asleep has to be removed
36:16but she does have a blink so removing the gas mask definitely can contribute to the animal getting
36:21lighter during the anesthetic obviously sometimes it's unavoidable if we need to look at things like
36:26the teeth in the eyes so both of her upper conines and this lower one francis will x-ray the lion's mouth
36:35to inspect the three root canals lions have incredible teeth they're huge sharp let's see how this goes
36:45they use their teeth to help bring down prey and obviously then to eat their prey we're ready to go
36:55you watch that rest rate for me please re
36:59everyone out the way every minute the gas mask is off the more likely it is maya will start waking up
37:07again chelsea yeah i'm just processing the five now
37:15frances that first tooth you've just missed the very very tip of the root
37:24the roots are so long it's ridiculous if frances wants a clearer x-ray she'll have to remove the gas
37:32mask yet again somebody watching her for me over at the great southern ocean's habitat a battle of
37:42wits is taking place between nala the sea lion and taronga's enrichment 18. we've challenged john and
37:50fred to create us a new enrichment item for our australian sea lions their first fish dispensing
37:55prototype was put to the test with mixed results it worked but it's not the success that we were hoping
38:03for yeah we can probably come up with a better design and be more challenging yeah but challenging for who
38:13sea lion nala how are we going to get this to do that or our dynamic duo research and development it's
38:22always really exciting to be given a problem a project our our job is to attempt to make them
38:35attempt can you hold that screw and i'll put them in well that that seems to work
38:42yeah seems to work all right yeah and in pretty impressive time fred and john have engineered a
38:51radical new vertical feeder so here's the new feeder oh wow look at that you reckon yeah that's amazing
39:00okay so um activate it by pulling the congs oh yeah fishing the top oh cool wow all right so now we're
39:10gonna hang it up we're gonna have it over the middle of the pool this is an ambitious new design
39:16nala must work out that she needs to pull on one of the cords if she wants to retrieve a fish looks good
39:23nala let's do it we're going out here yeah cheers
39:31good girl while john and fred have designed it to be hard it's not a success unless nala actually figures
39:39out how to dispense the hidden fish she can smell the fish that's the one that's the one that's it
39:57that's it oh yeah good job nala outstanding try a different kong retracting oh hey oh good work
40:13to see it working is the best thing that one can you do it again oh there's one more nala's a very
40:22clever seal she worked it out pretty quickly they're just gorgeous you know they're just gorgeous
40:28they're so intelligent well nala that's it that's it and john and fred i gotta say i'm pretty impressed
40:37she got it right i think you got all the fish out in this battle of wits everyone is a winner well thank
40:44you so much guys thank you for me and nala i think she did you like it oh nala no no no no in the wall

41:00fast running out final job chelsea's given one last job pretty crazy
41:05blood pressure 168 over 28. in maya's den the taronga vet team are fighting the clock somebody
41:16watching her for me yep maya's exposure to the anesthetic gas has been reduced
41:23while vet francis x-rays her teeth to check some recent dental work
41:28that first tooth you just missed the very very tip of the root to get the full picture francis has
41:39to do the x-ray again just let her have a couple of breaths so she tops up maya's anesthetic one more time
41:50okay will you just go and monitor while i quickly look at the x-rays of course so just monitor her
42:02everyone paying attention this is their last chance it's time for maya to be woken up i'm quite happy with
42:11her teeth there's no fresh fractures or anything like that they all look okay they're all in place
42:19i'm happy with that okay and with that final okay maya's checkup is complete she's in really
42:27good shape we got through all the things that i wanted to do so she's had her contraceptive implant
42:33yeah everything went really well i think the procedure went really smoothly which is great
42:37when it's your first time you want everything to go according to plan it definitely exceeded my
42:43expectations being in there so what's she on now that's right chelsea did such a fantastic job
42:48such a fantastic opportunity for her to see how it goes and see how busy it is
42:57chelsea do you want to grab yourself a alcohol swab yep and you can do the honors with the
43:02acopamazole amazing in another first for chelsea today she's now been tasked with waking maya up
43:09with a drug that reverses the effects of the anesthesia final final jab stab it all the way in yep and
43:17draw back all the way in draw back inject the whole thing nice and strong steady
43:27good work thank you it's pretty cool getting to do the reversal injection for
43:31the first dangerous animal procedure i've done this is pretty crazy
43:40all right lock it up
43:46we're closely watching the respiration that it stays consistent
43:49and standing watch is kari again looking out for his mum who's wondering what is going on
44:00checking us out as well as his mum i think blinking is increasing
44:05the contraceptive implant may take a few weeks to really work so once that settles hopefully we'll be
44:12able to get the whole pride back together again the procedure went perfectly couldn't have gone as
44:17better yeah
