00:00:30Welcome, everyone. I am so glad you're here. I love Christmas. I admit it. I love everything about Christmas time. I love the cookies. I love the fire. I love the presents. I love the stockings. I love the tree. I love the fudge. I love the lights. It's a great time for growing out the winter beard. I love everything about it. I love the music. I love the carols and the hymns. I love all the kids.
00:01:00And I love the spirit in the air at Christmas time. Wherever you go, there's something that makes people want to be more kind. At Christmas, they want to be more compassionate, more helpful, more generous.
00:01:15Donations go up all around the world. Something that makes people bring others in from out of the cold and help them, clothe them, feed them.
00:01:26And best of all, I think there's something about Christmas that all of us sense deep inside that says something big happened.
00:01:36And because of it, everything is going to be OK. And I love hot chocolate.
00:01:48But if you noticed, there's some people who would love to put a big wet blanket on all of this.
00:02:00They don't want us to love Christmas so much and celebrate it the way we do.
00:02:06There's this one group over here that says, hey, if you want to sing your songs and do your stuff at Christmas time, that's fine.
00:02:16But tone it down. Don't sing so loud. Right.
00:02:20Just you take your private stuff and you just keep it in your house.
00:02:25Don't let it spill out into the public and bother the rest of us.
00:02:29Just keep it tucked in and private.
00:02:32And then there's this other group over here who's actually on the inside, who's telling us, you know, everything you're doing, all this stuff, the images, the characters, the traditions, it's all wrong.
00:02:49It has nothing to do with Christmas.
00:02:53As a matter of fact, you should just take all of that, wrap it up and throw it out the door because it's all bad.
00:02:59You know, what are they going to do next? Tell us hot chocolate's bad for us? The Druids invented it?
00:03:12So what are we supposed to do?
00:03:15I mean, it can get pretty confusing and all this bickering is definitely not doing anything good for our kids.
00:03:26Maybe we need a word from the outside.
00:03:29Maybe we need a voice, someone who can remind us of the true meaning of Christmas.
00:03:37Because maybe somewhere along the way, we lost sight of the real story.
00:03:44Maybe we've got it wrong.
00:03:48Or maybe we're listening to the wrong people.
00:03:52Or maybe, just maybe, someone like Santa Claus is actually on the team?
00:04:06Or maybe we'll say, listen to myself.
00:04:07So I'll go.
00:04:08Or maybe, don't care.

00:05:09Stories are tricky things, especially the ones that we've heard lots of times
00:05:16There was a time when we didn't mind hearing the same stories over and over again
00:05:22In fact, when we were children, we insisted on hearing them on an endless loop
00:05:28In fact, we'd even beg and plead with our parents until they either gave up or gave in
00:05:35Then we got older, and we thought, maybe it's time for some new stories
00:05:41We wanted to be surprised
00:05:43We wanted more twists and turns
00:05:46And we'd roll our eyes if something ever got too predictable
00:05:51But then we had kids of our own
00:05:53And we found ourselves telling them the same stories our parents told us
00:05:58Only, we thought that maybe the stories were a bit too scary
00:06:03We got nervous that the wolf or the witch might actually give them nightmares
00:06:09So we eased off on the bad guys
00:06:12Or even left them out entirely
00:06:15Our heroes got tamed and cut down to more manageable size
00:06:21They needed to be less intense, more jolly
00:06:26But the stories we hear and the stories we tell shape us
00:06:31They teach us how to live by showing us how to live
00:06:36You and I are in a story right now
00:06:40And how we enter this story matters
00:06:56And how we enter this story
00:06:59And how we enter this story

00:10:05Do I need to break some legs? Is he not treating you right?
00:10:08No.
00:10:08Because I'll take him out in the back right now.
00:10:10No, no, he's fine, really.
00:10:12He's just not into Christmas this year, that's all.
00:10:22All right, who wants hot chocolate?
00:10:24I'm hot chocolate, Dad. Come on in, guys.
00:10:26Remember how I said earlier that you and I are in the middle of a story?
00:10:30The difference between our story and the stories we heard as kids
00:10:34is that we get to help write ours.
00:10:38And we can choose to be the hero or the villain.
00:10:41We can be the wise man or the fool.
00:10:44We can be Tiny Tim or Uncle Scrooge.
00:10:48Even Uncle Scrooge has a story, and he has his reasons.
00:10:54Problems don't take a break just because it's Christmas time.
00:10:58Maybe someone's missed his Christmas bonus this year.
00:11:00Or maybe he lost his job.
00:11:02Or even a loved one.
00:11:05Or maybe, just maybe,
00:11:09he just doesn't like Christmas under any circumstances.
00:11:16And that's Christian, my brother-in-law.
00:11:20My sister wasn't exaggerating.
00:11:22He is not into Christmas this year.
00:11:24You just don't know someone's story
00:11:27until you see what's going on inside his head.
00:11:34Where some see youthful joy,
00:11:37others see phony smiles and spoiled bratty kids.
00:11:41Where some see laughter and holiday cheer,
00:11:44others see pretense and obligations.
00:11:48Where some see festive decorations,
00:11:51others see perverted symbols with hidden meanings.
00:11:54Where some see innocent toys,
00:11:57others see pointless distractions.
00:12:01Where some see generosity and the joy of giving,
00:12:04others see needless spending and bad stewardship.
00:12:10Commercialism, greed, holiday junk,
00:12:13materialism, paganism, elf worship.
00:12:15The list goes on and on.
00:12:18Some people are determined to see the worst
00:12:21and even the best of things.
00:12:24A big slap in the face to the true meaning of Christmas.
00:12:27My man, Christian, how you doing?
00:12:40What's up, DeAndre?
00:12:41How you been?
00:12:42You know me.
00:12:43Blessed and highly favored.
00:12:45And?
00:12:45Saved and sanctified filled with the Holy Ghost
00:12:47and that with a burning fire.
00:12:50And?
00:12:51Made evident by speaking in tongues.
00:12:53Of course.
00:12:55You guys and your verses
00:12:56really need to work on your exegesis.
00:12:59Extra Jesus?
00:13:00Man, I've had my extra Jesus
00:13:01ever since I was baptized for the second time.
00:13:04You gonna give me some?
00:13:05That's not what I do.
00:13:06You get that memo?
00:13:08About what?
00:13:09No more Crazy Shirt Fridays.
00:13:13From who?
00:13:13The man.
00:13:15Corporate.
00:13:16They think they gonna tell us what to do.
00:13:18Well, we gonna go to HR.
00:13:19I'm gonna take it straight to HR.
00:13:20You gotta read your emails.
00:13:21If we don't have Crazy Shirt Fridays,
00:13:23it's the end for us.
00:13:24Man, that's all we got.
00:13:25What else do we get?
00:13:26Floor two?
00:13:27I don't want floor two.
00:13:28You know what happens down to floor two?
00:13:29I don't.
00:13:30Don't wanna find out.
00:13:31Cause I'm on floor four.
00:13:32And I like it that way.
00:13:33We gonna keep it that way.
00:13:34We gonna march if we have to.
00:13:36Straight power.
00:13:36Me and you.
00:13:37My people have been through enough.
00:13:38First they come in,
00:13:39start telling us what we gonna do.
00:13:41And then they start taking over.
00:13:42Telling us we can't have Fridays.
00:13:44Then you can't have Thursdays.
00:13:45Then you can't have Tuesdays.
00:13:46And what's left?
00:13:47Wednesday.
00:13:48Hump day.
00:13:48That's already a day.
00:13:49That's not our day.
00:13:50We need a day for us.
00:13:51Crazy Shirt Fridays.
00:13:52Do you know how many crazy shirts I've got
00:13:54that my wife gave me for Christmas?
00:13:55What am I gonna do with those?
00:13:57What do you got to do with those?
00:13:59Musik
00:14:28Are you listening to me?
00:14:30I'm going to get some hot chocolate.
00:14:32I'll send you the email again, alright?
00:14:34I'm out.
00:14:39And when we see someone struggling around Christmas,
00:14:42we should reach out.
00:14:45Hey, Christian!
00:14:48Nope.
00:14:50I'm not here.
00:14:53Just Bill on the couch.
00:14:58And if that person goes missing from the Christmas party,
00:15:04especially if it's at his own home,
00:15:06a good place to look would be somewhere quiet,
00:15:10free from Christmas.
00:15:14Ah, the car in the driveway.
00:15:18See, if this were a story,
00:15:19that's exactly where you would expect to find him.
00:15:22And you would know
00:15:23that this character needs
00:15:25an intervention.
00:15:29Hey!
00:15:30Hey!
00:15:35I was wondering where you were.
00:15:40Just, you know,
00:15:41take a break.
00:15:44You okay?
00:15:53Yeah.
00:15:55It just gets...
00:15:58noisy.
00:15:58You know.
00:15:59I was driving home today,
00:16:12and, uh...
00:16:17right on Main.
00:16:20Everything's lit up.
00:16:21I'm driving by a store,
00:16:26and I see...
00:16:30I see a little girl and her mom.
00:16:34The little girl's got this look on her face, like...
00:16:36And her mom's looking at her, like...
00:16:40It's okay.
00:16:42And the mom's got bags with her.
00:16:44You can tell they've been shopping.
00:16:47And the little girl is just so upset.
00:16:54Obviously, whatever she wants,
00:16:56she's not getting.
00:16:58Everybody just wants stuff.
00:17:01And then I come here,
00:17:04and I look at her.
00:17:05I look at the food.
00:17:06I look at the ham.
00:17:08A ham.
00:17:08I don't even know we get a ham that big.
00:17:10I see the presents.
00:17:11I see...
00:17:12I see...
00:17:13I see the tree.
00:17:13I see...
00:17:14I see Santa.
00:17:18And it's like,
00:17:18what are we gonna do?
00:17:19We're gonna...
00:17:20We're gonna open those presents,
00:17:22and he's his nephew's gonna get all excited.
00:17:23They're gonna tear it through.
00:17:25And it's like three weeks from now,
00:17:27no one's gonna be playing with it.
00:17:29And that money's spent.
00:17:34How many kids could we have fed?
00:17:39How many wells could we have dug?
00:17:42Yeah.
00:17:44That's Christmas.
00:17:45Don't...
00:17:47Don't...
00:17:48Dude...
00:17:49I love...
00:17:51Your sister.
00:17:52I love her to death.
00:17:57She loves...
00:17:58She loves doing this.
00:17:59She loves...
00:18:02Put all the lights up and...
00:18:06But I look...
00:18:07I look at what Christmas is.
00:18:09and I think to myself,
00:18:13this cannot be what God wants.
00:18:25And deep in the corner,
00:18:29just stuck in the corner,
00:18:30will be a little snow globe,
00:18:34a little nativity scene,
00:18:36a little baby Jesus.
00:18:37We stick it somewhere in the corner,
00:18:41don't really see it,
00:18:43and it's a trinket,
00:18:45while a big old Christmas tree just...
00:18:47Oh, look at it!
00:18:48On the big tree,
00:18:49on the big center,
00:18:50on the big centerpiece of all of Christmas,
00:18:52and Santa's over there,
00:18:53and over here.
00:18:55No, let's just put Jesus in the corner.
00:18:57Just put him right there.
00:18:58And put a little glass thing around him.
00:19:02Shake it upside down.
00:19:03It's winter.
00:19:04Snow falls all over...
00:19:06All over baby Jesus.
00:19:07And by the way,
00:19:08he was not born...
00:19:10in December.
00:19:14This...
00:19:14is not...
00:19:16what Christmas is all about.
00:19:18I hear you.
00:19:20I get it.
00:19:21My man.
00:19:26But this is all wrong.
00:19:27This is all wrong.
00:19:29No.
00:19:36You're...
00:19:36all wrong.
00:19:45About what?
00:19:47About everything you just said.
00:19:50I said a lot.
00:19:52Yeah, and it's all wrong.
00:19:53I think you mean well.
00:20:01But you got the whole thing wrong.
00:20:05You...
00:20:05you...
00:20:06you...
00:20:06you drank the Kool-Aid.
00:20:08You...
00:20:08you...
00:20:09you took the bait.
00:20:11Hook, line, and sinker.
00:20:13You swallowed the whole thing.
00:20:17Guess what?
00:20:17Everything you see inside there,
00:20:19it's all about Christmas.
00:20:21It's all about Jesus.
00:20:22And you're spoiling the whole thing.
00:20:28Not just for your wife.
00:20:33But for everybody inside your house.
00:20:39You're listening to the wrong people.
00:20:43Are we seeing the same party?
00:20:45Are we seeing the same everything
00:20:47that's going on in there?
00:20:49Yeah.
00:20:49Okay, so what...
00:20:52Okay, so...
00:20:55explain to me...
00:20:59how when I walk into that Christmas party,
00:21:01which is going on
00:21:02all over the world...
00:21:05Mm-hmm.
00:21:06explain to me how
00:21:07that Christmas party
00:21:09honors and glorifies
00:21:13Jesus.
00:21:14because I'm not seeing it.
00:21:18Where do I start?
00:21:23Let's start with your snow globe.
00:21:26The nativity.
00:21:29Now, I want you to visualize this.
00:21:30Close your eyes
00:21:31and...
00:21:31and...
00:21:31and visualize this.
00:21:34Okay.
00:21:35Right.
00:21:35I'll play.
00:21:36I see it.
00:21:40A baby is born.
00:21:44If you had to pick
00:21:45one valuable thing
00:21:46in all of the decorations
00:21:47around your house
00:21:48at Christmastime,
00:21:49it would probably be
00:21:50your nativity set.
00:21:52But Christian,
00:21:53I don't even think
00:21:54you see
00:21:55what's so amazing
00:21:56about that scene.
00:21:57Because to think
00:21:59that it's only valuable
00:22:00because the baby Jesus is there
00:22:02misses a huge part
00:22:04of what's going on.
00:22:05The birth of the baby
00:22:07is valuable
00:22:08because of the story
00:22:10he enters into.
00:22:25I want you to see a cave.
00:22:27Not a stable
00:22:28or some little
00:22:30prairie farm barn thing.
00:22:32First of all,
00:22:33a manger
00:22:33is a feeding trough
00:22:35and it's probably
00:22:36going to be carved
00:22:37out of a rock.
00:22:39It's going to be
00:22:40in a cave.
00:22:42And upon that rock
00:22:44you would feed
00:22:45your animals.
00:22:55Now move beyond
00:22:56the cute
00:22:57and traditional
00:22:58where everything
00:22:58is safe and soft,
00:22:59where everyone has
00:23:00white skin
00:23:01and clean clothes.
00:23:03See a cave.
00:23:05See a place for food.
00:23:09Now let's get
00:23:10this story right.
00:23:12This was a child
00:23:13that was born
00:23:14into a world
00:23:15where the world power
00:23:17wanted to kill him
00:23:18just for being born.
00:23:20I want you to think
00:23:21of soldiers
00:23:21surrounding them.
00:23:23You need to think
00:23:25of Herod's soldiers
00:23:26moving through the streets
00:23:28finding babies
00:23:29and murdering them
00:23:30and mothers
00:23:33weeping for their children.
00:23:38Let's set the stage.
00:23:40We're very careful
00:23:41about having Mary there
00:23:42kneeling by her
00:23:44newborn miracle.
00:23:45Joseph is there
00:23:49surely amazed
00:23:50at what had just happened.
00:23:54Baby Jesus is there.
00:23:56And the Bible
00:23:57draws our attention
00:23:58to something
00:23:59that we usually
00:24:00think of as just a prop.
00:24:02Let's take everything
00:24:03away for a moment.
00:24:07Let's take away Joseph
00:24:08leaving just a young girl
00:24:11and her newborn infant.
00:24:13Now let's take away Mary.
00:24:15Leaving the baby.
00:24:17Let's even take away
00:24:19the baby himself
00:24:20for just a moment.
00:24:22Now don't panic.
00:24:23It's not because
00:24:24he isn't the most
00:24:25important person
00:24:26in the story.
00:24:26He is.
00:24:28But because by getting
00:24:29a look at this prop
00:24:30we'll get a better idea
00:24:32of why he was born
00:24:33in the first place.
00:24:36Swaddling cloth.
00:24:38What is this
00:24:39swaddling cloth?
00:24:41Is it just a blanket
00:24:42for a baby?
00:24:42We usually only think
00:24:46of the baby Jesus
00:24:47being wrapped in cloths.
00:24:49But the Bible
00:24:50brings these cloths
00:24:51back into the story
00:24:52one more time.
00:24:55At his tomb.
00:24:57When they rolled
00:24:58that stone away.
00:25:01The cloth in the tomb
00:25:03was empty
00:25:03because it could not
00:25:05hold the body
00:25:06wrapped inside.
00:25:07Jesus escaped death
00:25:09as a baby
00:25:10by the hand of God
00:25:11and he conquered death
00:25:13as an adult
00:25:14by that very same hand.
00:25:17And because that cloth
00:25:19could not hold him
00:25:20death still
00:25:22cannot win.
00:25:25Did you ever wonder
00:25:26why the wise men
00:25:27brought frankincense
00:25:28and myrrh
00:25:28at Jesus' birth?
00:25:30Those were burial spices.
00:25:31Why would they bring
00:25:33burial spices
00:25:34to a baby shower?
00:25:36The birth scene
00:25:37is a picture
00:25:38of a coming burial scene.
00:25:42The soldiers
00:25:43don't get to kill
00:25:44the baby though.
00:25:45He came to die
00:25:47but it was according
00:25:48to his father's plan
00:25:49in his timing
00:25:51and on his terms.
00:25:54The death of Jesus
00:25:56was not the tragic
00:25:57end to the story.
00:25:59It was the plan
00:26:00all along
00:26:01to offer up
00:26:02his body
00:26:03as bread for the hungry
00:26:04and to shed his blood
00:26:06to cover the sins
00:26:08of the guilty.
00:26:10Now put Jesus
00:26:11back into that cloth
00:26:13and let that image
00:26:15paint the picture
00:26:16for you.
00:26:18A baby
00:26:18who came to die
00:26:20but not until
00:26:22the appointed time.
00:26:25Yes,
00:26:25that's the reason
00:26:26for the season
00:26:28right there.
00:26:30I've got to admit
00:26:38I never
00:26:39saw the whole
00:26:41swaddling cloth
00:26:43thing.
00:26:49I didn't either.
00:26:52But that's my point.
00:26:54like
00:26:55I can open
00:26:58the Bible.
00:26:59I can look
00:27:00right there
00:27:00and I can go
00:27:01oh there it is
00:27:02like I didn't
00:27:02I didn't even
00:27:03see that
00:27:03like that
00:27:04that stuff
00:27:05blows my mind
00:27:05like that's
00:27:06that's all
00:27:07I'm saying
00:27:07and
00:27:08Herod's soldiers
00:27:10and kind of
00:27:11looking at
00:27:11that whole thing
00:27:12like that's
00:27:13I feel like
00:27:14we need to have
00:27:15like
00:27:16little Herod's soldiers
00:27:18like all around
00:27:20you know
00:27:21the
00:27:21nativity
00:27:22for people
00:27:22to see
00:27:23like
00:27:23this is
00:27:23this is
00:27:24what's going
00:27:24on
00:27:24right
00:27:25right
00:27:25man DeAndre
00:27:35what's happening

00:27:39oh you know
00:27:41I got that memo
00:27:42it's not a laughing matter
00:27:45though man
00:27:45you know what's
00:27:47really going on here

00:28:21we gotta go on the offensive

00:28:23if you stay ready
00:28:24you ain't got to get ready
00:28:25they're already taking away

00:29:14you know there's a huge
00:29:15honeybee shortage right
00:29:16exactly
00:29:16colony collapse disorder
00:29:18oh that rhymes with
00:29:19new world order
00:29:20coincidence
00:29:21I think not
00:29:22I saw those change
00:29:23I know what's up

00:31:14in December
00:31:14everyone knows that
00:31:16so we're celebrating
00:31:17that
00:31:17and the trees
00:31:18are like
00:31:18it's about like
00:31:20the evergreen trees
00:31:21so it represents
00:31:21eternal life
00:31:22and fertility
00:31:23fertility gods
00:31:25Wikipedia
00:31:26yeah
00:31:28and people
00:31:29would worship
00:31:32these symbols
00:31:33and they believe
00:31:34that if they worship
00:31:34these symbols
00:31:35and they lay down
00:31:35their offerings
00:31:36and their gifts
00:31:36that they would
00:31:37inherit eternal life
00:31:39you know this
00:31:39and this is
00:31:40this is all
00:31:41idolatry
00:31:42yes
00:31:44it's idolatry
00:31:44in my house
00:31:46how do your kids

00:31:50what do they do
00:31:52I make my kids
00:31:55wait at the top
00:31:56of the staircase
00:31:56I don't let them
00:31:57come down the stairs
00:31:58until my wife
00:32:00and I get everything
00:32:01ready at the tree
00:32:02and the anticipation
00:32:03builds
00:32:04and they run
00:32:05down the stairs
00:32:06when I tell them
00:32:06they can
00:32:07and they run
00:32:08out to the tree
00:32:09and they
00:32:10just are blown away
00:32:12by all the presents
00:32:13sitting at the base
00:32:14of the tree
00:32:15that's exactly
00:32:16what the druids did
00:32:17right
00:32:20druids
00:32:21you can look this up
00:32:23this is all history
00:32:25so
00:32:26where
00:32:27I ask again
00:32:29where
00:32:30are Christmas trees
00:32:31in the Bible
00:32:32I'm glad you asked
00:32:34I'll close my eyes again
00:32:35here I go
00:32:36I'm waiting
00:32:36okay
00:32:37what's the chapter
00:32:38what's the verse
00:32:39do you have a weird
00:32:40obscure verse
00:32:41in numbers
00:32:43where
00:32:44where
00:32:44where am I going
00:32:45where do I go
00:32:47where do I start
00:32:47in the Bible
00:32:47Christmas trees
00:32:48I'm waiting
00:32:49where do I go
00:32:49I'm glad my sister
00:32:52married you
00:32:53this is awesome
00:32:55bro
00:32:58bro
00:32:59look at me
00:33:00where are we going
00:33:03in the Bible
00:33:03Genesis
00:33:04the whole biblical story
00:33:15starts
00:33:16in a tree lot
00:33:17the garden of Eden
00:33:19was full of trees
00:33:21Adam and Eve
00:33:23were given the fruit
00:33:24of these trees
00:33:24to eat
00:33:25but the story
00:33:26calls our attention
00:33:27to two of these trees
00:33:29in particular
00:33:29first
00:33:31the tree of the knowledge
00:33:32of good and evil
00:33:33and then
00:33:34later
00:33:34the tree of life
00:33:35one tree
00:33:37was off limits
00:33:38because by eating it
00:33:39man would surely die
00:33:40but Adam
00:33:42ate from the first tree
00:33:43and was thrown out
00:33:44of the garden
00:33:45so that he couldn't
00:33:46eat from the second
00:33:47mankind would have
00:33:49to wait
00:33:49until the path
00:33:51to that tree
00:33:51was reopened
00:33:52but I'm getting
00:33:54ahead of myself
00:33:54we'll come back
00:33:56to that later
00:33:56let's talk about
00:33:58that evergreen tree
00:33:59in your house
00:34:00decorated with
00:34:01stylized fruit
00:34:02and lights
00:34:03that's making you
00:34:04so nervous
00:34:04you're anxious
00:34:06because you can't
00:34:07find it in the Bible
00:34:08well let me help you
00:34:10when God created
00:34:12the world
00:34:13he filled it
00:34:14with trees
00:34:15he hung fruit
00:34:17on the trees
00:34:17when it was time
00:34:19for him to build
00:34:20his house
00:34:20and make it beautiful
00:34:22God brought
00:34:23trees inside
00:34:24the walls of his temple
00:34:26were frescoed
00:34:27with images of trees
00:34:29the lamp stand
00:34:30in his tabernacle
00:34:31was an almond tree
00:34:33and guess what
00:34:35he placed
00:34:36on the branches
00:34:37of the tree
00:34:38in his house
00:34:39lights
00:34:41beautiful green trees
00:34:44decorated with fruit
00:34:46shimmering with lights
00:34:47inside a house
00:34:49that's God's idea
00:34:51not the Druids
00:34:53and the early church
00:34:55had plenty of good reasons
00:34:56to celebrate
00:34:57the birth of Jesus
00:34:57on December 25th
00:34:59and it had nothing
00:35:00to do with the winter solstice
00:35:02by the way
00:35:03last I checked
00:35:04it was God
00:35:05who made the winter solstice
00:35:07when he set the planets
00:35:08on their path
00:35:09around the sun
00:35:10and it's actually
00:35:12quite fitting
00:35:12that we celebrate
00:35:13the birth of Jesus
00:35:14in the bleak midwinter
00:35:16when the world
00:35:17appears to be
00:35:18sleeping and dying
00:35:19the darkest
00:35:21and coldest time
00:35:22of year
00:35:22right then
00:35:23at that time
00:35:24we're proclaiming
00:35:26the turn of history
00:35:28from darkness
00:35:29to light
00:35:29from coldness
00:35:31to warmth
00:35:32and from death
00:35:33to life
00:35:34so enough
00:35:37with what pagans
00:35:37want us to see
00:35:38let's look
00:35:40at what God
00:35:40wants us to see
00:35:41let's go back
00:35:44to our story
00:35:44as I was saying
00:35:45Adam stole the fruit
00:35:47from God's tree
00:35:48and ate it
00:35:48now when you steal something
00:35:50you're required
00:35:51to put it back
00:35:52but how could he
00:35:54Adam had already eaten it
00:35:56it had gone down inside
00:35:57and become part of him
00:35:59the only way that Adam
00:36:01could put the fruit back
00:36:03on the tree
00:36:04would be
00:36:04as crazy as it sounds
00:36:06he would have to put himself
00:36:08up on that tree
00:36:09now think
00:36:12what did Jesus do
00:36:14he was the last
00:36:17Adam
00:36:17Jesus was able
00:36:19to do
00:36:20what Adam
00:36:21could not do
00:36:21he put himself
00:36:24up on a tree
00:36:25making us
00:36:26right with God
00:36:28Jesus
00:36:28was God's
00:36:30blessed fruit
00:36:30hung on his
00:36:32blessed tree
00:36:32remember that
00:36:39swaddling cloth
00:36:40it comes back
00:36:41into the story again
00:36:43at Jesus' burial
00:36:45Nicodemus brings
00:36:47all the funeral
00:36:48preparations
00:36:48frankincense
00:36:49myrrh
00:36:50aloe
00:36:51and cloth
00:36:52and why is he
00:36:54bringing the cloth
00:36:55to wrap the body
00:36:57of our crucified
00:36:58Savior
00:36:58Jesus
00:36:59put to death
00:37:01on a tree
00:37:02the Bible
00:37:04begins with trees
00:37:06Adam stole the fruit
00:37:08from God's tree
00:37:09and ate it
00:37:10the fruit
00:37:11that the first Adam
00:37:12stole
00:37:12was put back
00:37:14on the tree
00:37:14by the last Adam
00:37:16when he himself
00:37:17hung
00:37:18on a wooden cross
00:37:20so when you walk
00:37:27into a Christmas tree
00:37:28lot
00:37:28I want you to see
00:37:30hundreds of crosses
00:37:32that will never be used
00:37:34because of Jesus'
00:37:35finished work
00:37:36he paid the price
00:37:39that we could never
00:37:40have paid
00:37:41he took the curse
00:37:43that was rightly ours
00:37:44he reconciled us
00:37:47to God
00:37:47he is the light
00:37:49of the world
00:37:50that has pierced
00:37:51the darkness
00:37:52so when you see
00:38:05empty Christmas trees
00:38:06see an empty cross
00:38:08and when you see
00:38:09the empty cross
00:38:10see the empty cloth
00:38:11lying in an empty tomb
00:38:13and when you see
00:38:15an empty tomb
00:38:16do what the disciples did
00:38:17turn and run
00:38:19to tell the story
00:38:20that Jesus
00:38:21is alive
00:38:22that's pretty cool
00:38:34that's awesome
00:38:37just
00:38:41I wasn't
00:38:42I almost feel bad

00:38:54I didn't
00:38:55hey

00:38:57that's why I'm sharing
00:38:59it with you

00:42:46so Christian
00:42:49you want Christmas
00:42:51to be all about Jesus
00:42:52you think
00:42:53you're fighting
00:42:55the good fight
00:42:55by scowling
00:42:56at decorations

00:42:59and mocking
00:42:59Christmas trees
00:43:00let me show you
00:43:02how a real
00:43:03defender of the faith
00:43:04does it
00:43:05now if I tried
00:43:06to show you
00:43:07how this really
00:43:08happened
00:43:08you'd see a lot
00:43:10of guys
00:43:10in robes
00:43:11wearing tall hats
00:43:12carrying scepters
00:43:13and swinging incense
00:43:14everywhere
00:43:15it'd be a mess
00:43:15I want you
00:43:23to imagine
00:43:24this a little
00:43:24more
00:43:25Lord of the Rings
00:43:27sir
00:43:30go away
00:43:35he's here sir
00:43:39where
00:43:47here
00:43:50at the tavern
00:43:51grab my coat
00:43:56his real name
00:44:04was Nicholas
00:44:05he was a devout
00:44:07Christian
00:44:08he was the bishop
00:44:09of Myra
00:44:10a city
00:44:11in modern day
00:44:11Turkey
00:44:12he was left
00:44:15with a large
00:44:15sum of money
00:44:16when his parents
00:44:17died
00:44:17and he became
00:44:18famous for his
00:44:19kindness toward
00:44:20the poor
00:44:21and his generous
00:44:22giving of gifts
00:44:23to children
00:44:24he was there
00:44:33at the council
00:44:34of Nicaea
00:44:34in AD 325
00:44:36one of the most
00:44:37important events
00:44:38of church history
00:44:39because one of the
00:44:40most important
00:44:41doctrines of the faith
00:44:42was being challenged
00:44:43there were leaders
00:44:44in the church
00:44:45that had begun
00:44:46to deny
00:44:46the deity of Christ
00:44:47the doctrine
00:44:49that confessed
00:44:50Jesus
00:44:50as the son of God
00:44:52God in the flesh
00:44:53Nicholas
00:44:55did not take kindly
00:44:57to those who wanted
00:44:58to reduce Jesus
00:44:59to a mere man
00:45:00the council of Nicaea
00:45:03ended up producing
00:45:03what is known today
00:45:05as the Nicene Creed
00:45:06a profession of faith
00:45:08used by churches
00:45:09all around the world
00:45:10the creed affirmed
00:45:11the deity of Christ
00:45:13and the three persons
00:45:14of the Trinity
00:45:15but that affirmation
00:45:17didn't happen
00:45:18without Nicholas
00:45:19and a fight
00:45:20he was a real man
00:45:27who fought for a real truth
00:45:29against a real enemy
00:45:31of the faith
00:45:32leading the charge
00:45:51in this heresy
00:45:52was a bishop
00:45:53named Arius
00:45:54he was known
00:45:55as a charismatic
00:45:56and compelling speaker
00:45:57he was traveling
00:45:58from region
00:45:59spreading his heresy
00:46:01like a plague
00:46:02saying that Jesus
00:46:03was less than God
00:46:05Nicholas had heard enough
00:46:13of Arius' babbling
00:46:14he would be the shepherd
00:46:16that protects his sheep
00:46:17from the wolves
00:46:18in the beginning
00:46:33was the word
00:46:36and the word
00:46:40was with God
00:46:42the official record says
00:46:59that at a critical moment
00:47:00during the council
00:47:01Nicholas put the heretic
00:47:04Arius to shame
00:47:05not only by word
00:47:07but also by deed
00:47:09smiting him
00:47:11on the cheek
00:47:11now of course
00:47:27not everyone
00:47:28at the council
00:47:29was happy
00:47:29with his less than
00:47:31jolly actions
00:47:31in fact
00:47:32they were so displeased
00:47:34they removed
00:47:34his title as bishop
00:47:35but he was so loved
00:47:37by the people
00:47:38that they gave it back
00:47:39to him
00:47:40in fact
00:47:41he was even
00:47:41sainted
00:47:42that's why
00:47:43we call him
00:47:44Saint Nicholas
00:47:46those were difficult
00:47:48and desperate times
00:47:49truth was on the line
00:47:50and it was not
00:47:51the time
00:47:52for this pastor
00:47:53to go soft on truth
00:47:54or stay quiet
00:47:56for the sake
00:47:56of being politically correct
00:47:58Nicholas was a hero
00:48:00who became legendary
00:48:02and that legend
00:48:04became larger than life
00:48:06and reached mythic proportions
00:48:07in France
00:48:09he was called
00:48:10Père Noël
00:48:10in Sweden
00:48:11he was Tompton
00:48:12in Norway
00:48:13he was Jules Nissen
00:48:14in the Netherlands
00:48:15he was Sinterklaas
00:48:17everyone wanted
00:48:19a piece of him
00:48:20oh look who it is
00:48:29better?
00:48:31you get that out
00:48:32of your system?
00:48:33come on
00:48:34we got work to do
00:48:35come on
00:48:59let's go bless
00:49:00some kids tonight
00:49:01we've got gifts to give
00:49:03so Christian
00:49:07the guy you think
00:49:09is distracting
00:49:10everyone's attention
00:49:11from the birth
00:49:12of the Christ child
00:49:13is actually
00:49:14the defender
00:49:15of the faith
00:49:16you want to be
00:49:17Santa

00:50:11but all this is good
00:50:14all this is what it's all about
00:50:17you just need to see it
00:50:19with new eyes
00:50:22I've missed it
00:50:28I've absolutely
00:50:32missed it

00:51:27there's a better way
00:51:30to end this story
00:51:30you know what you need to do
00:51:31you need to be the guy
00:51:33who walks back into your house
00:51:39walks up to your wife

00:58:17Jesus.
00:58:24So you're out of the car.
00:58:26Are your eyes open?
00:58:28What do you see?
00:58:33A soldier?
00:58:47We need to make traditions of our own.
00:58:58We need to infuse old symbols with new meaning.
00:59:02We need to rearrange our lives and our homes
00:59:05so that every single thing points to Jesus.
00:59:14We need to tell our children new stories.
00:59:17We need to be bold.
00:59:19Remember those soldiers at the nativity?
00:59:22These were Herod's strongest warriors doing his bidding.
00:59:27Every toy soldier can be a reminder of the whole story.
00:59:32Of how a baby was spared in his infancy
00:59:35to become the warrior that ensured that death finally was killed.
00:59:41So bring the soldiers close.
01:00:00Let them be near the nativity.
01:00:02And remind your children that every character in God's story has a place.
01:00:08And if you've been that guy,
01:00:23if you've spent the holidays terrorizing your family and your friends,
01:00:29scowling at Santa,
01:00:30frustrating your wife,
01:00:31it's time to make it right.
01:00:45Christmas, after all,
01:00:47is ultimately about making all things right.
01:00:50You're okay.
01:01:02Honey, I've been a bit of a jerk this Christmas season.
01:01:05Yeah, you have.
01:01:14You deserve so much better.
01:01:19And this Christmas,
01:01:20I want to give you something
01:01:20I've been wanting to give you for a long time.
01:01:23What do you got in mind, Big Papa?
01:01:28Now, what happens in most stories at this point?
01:01:31I mean, if you were writing this story right now,
01:01:33what would you want to have happen?
01:01:35The cliche kiss, right?
01:01:37But if we've learned one thing in all this,
01:01:41let's not forget that sometimes our heroes
01:01:44do the unexpected.
01:01:48I went ahead and just organized a hip-hop dance crew
01:01:51that encompasses all the joy and gospel burst and excitement
01:01:53that I alone as one man just cannot express.
01:01:56No, really, I did.
01:01:58Hit it, DeAndre!
01:02:00Oh, man, I got just the track for you.
01:02:02How about some Family Force 5?
01:02:04Angels, we have heard.
01:02:05Oh, ha!
01:02:06Come on, people, let's do this!
01:02:08Yeah, I want to see a choir in here.
01:02:10Uh, God Squad, you know how we do.
01:02:12Oh, Marshall Foster's in the house.
01:02:15Kicking it old school.
01:02:16The enemy.
01:02:17Ha, ha, you know how we do it.
01:02:18Out, social, friends, and tenors.
01:02:20Let's do this, baby!
01:02:21Angels, we have heard all night
01:02:24Sweetly singing o'er the flames
01:02:27And the mountains in reply
01:02:30Echoing their joyous strain
01:02:34Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

01:08:04Sure, don't max out your credit cards or use presents to buy friends, but remember, this
01:08:10is a celebration of the eternal God taking on a material body.
01:08:17So it's right that our holiday is marked with material things, things we can see with our eyes
01:08:24and touch with our hands and touch with our hands and look upon.
01:08:54And we would not have even scratched the surface of this glorious day.
01:09:02Throw your doors open and invite the world into the story of our story, our city, our city, our tree, our lights, our presence, our songs, our St. Nick, our hope, our future, our Savior.
01:09:21My brother-in-law is seeing it for the first time, and once your eyes have been opened, you can't go back.
01:09:29All the best to you and your family this Christmas.
01:09:39I have to say, things have improved around here.
01:09:44Christmas time is here.
01:09:51Christmas time is here.
01:10:07Come and celebrate the best time of the year.
01:10:11The jingle bells are ringing and the carolers are singing their Christmas songs.
01:10:18The Christmas time has come.
01:10:21Can you hear the little drama boy playing his drums?
01:10:24And everywhere you go, somebody's wishing you a Merry Christmas.
01:10:33My main man Christian, how you doing, man?
01:10:36How you doing, DeAndre?
01:10:37How you been?
01:10:38Bring it back.
01:10:39There we go.
01:10:40All right.
01:10:42And action.

01:11:15Wir werden es so machen. Wir werden es so machen.
01:11:18Wir haben hier nicht gemacht. Wir haben hier schon gemacht.
01:11:20Wir haben hier genug. Wir haben alle genug.
01:11:24Wir haben alle genug. Das ist genug.
01:11:27Wie viele Leute?
01:11:28Wir sind alle Leute.
01:11:30Wir haben eine ganze Menge.
01:11:33Wer sind?
01:11:34Wir sind alle Leute.
01:11:36Wir sind alle Leute.
01:11:37Ich weiß nicht, dass ich mich.
01:11:39Ich weiß nicht, was ich zu sprechen.
01:11:41Ich versuche meine Hände zu gehen.
01:11:43Ich versuche alles von uns zu gehen.
01:11:45Wir sind hier. Wir haben es hier.
01:11:47Wir haben es.
01:11:49Wir werden es über sein.
01:11:52Wir werden es überpassen.
01:11:55Wir werden esbringen.

01:13:07Sound speed.
01:13:09Kirk, can you pop up my sweater, dirt, dust, soil camera?
01:13:14Yeah.

01:13:50There's a joy in children seeing Santa at the mall.
01:13:57There's a joy the bright lights of the season bring us all.
01:14:03How can these compare to the good news the angels tell?
01:14:09Heaven has sent us a savior.
01:14:13What a night there is no greater.
01:14:16George, George.
01:14:23Hang a star on the Christmas tree.
01:14:26Love is called for you and me.
01:14:29George, George.
01:14:35I hear the carols on the radio.
01:14:38So turn it up and let the whole world know.
01:14:42Because I've got love for so there is no greater joy.
01:14:51I hear it in the bells they're ringing up and down the street.
01:14:57I see you shining in the smiles of everyone I meet.
01:15:04Feels to me like hope is stirring with the winter wind.
01:15:10Heaven has sent us a savior.

01:15:44Because I've got love for so there is no greater joy.
01:15:50Joy to the world.

01:17:26There's only one thing we can do.
01:17:31We gotta call Kirk Cameron.
01:17:34Get him involved, make a movie about it, then we got ourselves a movement.
