00:00dominated the high street a weekly shot for us is like way more than it was last
00:05year but now the game has changed while it's a shrinking do you like a bargain
00:11like is that a question that anybody needs to seriously answer and prices are
00:16soaring it's scary when I'm walking up to the tools enter the discount
00:22disruptors we take on the supermarkets by removing the friction it's Christmas
00:30costs a living crisis it's affecting everybody and we try and make it a little
00:34less painful it's all about being cheaper than everyone else
00:39they're making your shopping seductive we'll take it to marketing and they will
00:44start to sexify catching your eye line by line this is what's known as a shopper
00:48stopper and tantalizing your taste buds with the latest trend jacking we sold
00:5330,000 last week a finger on the butter I order from here from budget brilliance
01:04see these milkshakes for the kids are a bargain to next big things this one is an
01:09all-time cracker they're taking us beyond the shelves unlike the supermarkets we're
01:14no fancy shelving we're no big signs is no frills of us and behind the scenes this
01:19is where it all happens it's a box of six bars for a panic yeah I like it to reveal
01:26the secrets of super cheap shopping the bigger the sign the cheaper the price
01:32the more it's gonna sell you can't beat the supermarket
01:40coming up a bulk buying warehouse where best before means bargain not bin it I
01:48love it for me it's a thrill in the chase of the next product can I get that
01:51product cheaper can I get a bargain for our customers can I put a smile on
01:55someone's face and the discount retailer with plenty to say about his latest
02:00giveaway keep filling up your basket get to the 75 quid and you'll then hit the
02:05next freebie just keep on going basically the more you spend the more
02:09we'll give you
02:15with living costs at an all-time high everyone's looking to save a book or two
02:21people don't get that much money to spend a lot when I go in with like about
02:2940 pound a guy I don't come out with nothing but it's not just us shoppers
02:34who are feeling the squeeze I feel like the items are getting smaller and you're
02:38paying more money so yeah I don't think there's value much value for money with
02:45operational outgoings like wages rent and shipping costs on the increase retailers
02:50have to work hard to stay ahead but one crafty company is breaking the mold
02:55in Stockport one retailer is taking on the supermarkets by using a variety of
03:08clever tactics to keep their outgoings low Rogers Wholesale have a no-frills
03:13approach and flog best before delight at a fraction of the cost welcome to
03:18Rogers wholesale right here man cancer if you've never been to the UK's biggest
03:22gone past us for warehouse before where have you been get down and see us by
03:26tapping into the power of social media and word of mouth they have grown to
03:30become the largest wholesaler of their kind in the UK and MD Mark King has even
03:36more plans are full to bulk up his brands this is our brand new warehouse this adds to our other
03:43three warehouses that we've got obviously in Poole Plymouth and Wolverhampton and the King's Empire
03:49seems to be growing and growing we are looking to open another two warehouses hopefully in within the
03:54next six months with the cost of living crisis going on and again harder and harder for people more and
03:59more people need these places thank you I'll bet you any money these are about 80 pence in the shops
04:04all right not with Rogers don't forget ignore the date grab a bargain that's what it's all about
04:08all right basically I used to work for somebody we used to sell cheese and we used to go out and buy
04:16cheeses from different places we would go to them and they would basically look up and say well
04:21look I've got this fantastic cheese and it's 18 months past mature now so it's basically a vintage cheddar
04:26have a try we would try it and it would be absolutely fantastic when we then took it back to our
04:31facility and then started cutting it up the law states obviously that once you then put it down
04:35we could only put three months date on it so it's really really frustrating because often what it
04:39meant was there was a lot of wastage around that and a date driven discounting Empire was born what it
04:45did make me think was well hang on if this is how this this is now on this product what about all the
04:50other products especially products that are ambient and things like that then this this whole thing's a
04:54bit silly it's all about the APs that's ambient products you know they're the cool kids of food
05:00they can sit in your cupboard and chill till you need them Mark's built a business that aims to fight
05:06food waste champion common sense and help customers snack smarter so my philosophy with obviously best
05:16before is the three E's so it's educate so we're educating people about the product and then it's
05:21obviously to eradicate so we're obviously trying to stop this from going to landfill and then enjoy
05:25because it's such a cheap price why wouldn't you then enjoy it it's quite catchy that Mark but it's
05:30not just traditional dry cupboard staples that are safe beyond their best before date so this is a
05:36really interesting one with mayonnaise in terms of education because people get really worried about
05:40this kind of product because of obviously having eggs in it so this actually though is a pasteurized
05:44product and because it's an ambient product it can effectively last weeks months past its best before date
05:49so even though it contains eggs it can last up to a year after its best before date and it's not
05:55just food that's packed onto pallets what's the use by on water well of course when water comes out the
06:01ground spring I believe and you might have to fact check me I expect four million years old when it
06:07comes out of the ground but when we put it in a bottle it's only got like six months best before date
06:13does it sound mad it does to me
06:16but as mad as it may seem it's the way it's packaged rather than the product itself that
06:24dictates the best before date whilst in the early days Mark catered mainly for large families looking
06:30to buy in bulk in recent years he's noticed a shift in the type of shoppers seeking a snip and
06:37he calls them jams and I don't think he means the kind you spread on toast one of the biggest
06:42customer that we have is the jam so they're the just about managing people so these are generally
06:46people who have a job two kids really really struggling at the moment not really getting
06:52help with benefits can't use places like food banks and things like that but the great thing
06:57about Rogers is anybody can come and shop here so they can come and shop with us they can still be
07:01able to pay things like their mortgage their electric bill their ever-growing council tax bills and
07:06things like that and that's the feedback that we're getting all the time 60 quid and you've got
07:17like one and a half carrier bags and you're like what have I got for 60 quid I've got nothing it's
07:22just impossible to live you know for heating and electric and all that for many buying in large
07:29quantities is the perfect solution well we've seen that the Kenco coffee
07:33careful Larry there's what we've come for six of these I think I drink loads of this cappuccino
07:46you'll be dancing on the ceiling with all that coffee gosh you want that cost yeah I'm seeing at least four quid
07:54so it's like half price isn't it but these bulk buy bonanzas weren't always a big enough draw
08:01in the early days no one would come anywhere near us you know I was seen as a bit of a maverick
08:05and a nutcase you know and then now now people trust and know the brand how you doing now you're
08:10all right morning how you doing you're all right there how's it going seems like Mark's charm and
08:15discount food eventually won the naysayers round these customers they they come to me they know me
08:21they even stopped me in town they stopped me in coffee shops that used to happen to me all the
08:25time when I was in Corrie how you doing folks all right morning we're good yeah not bad not bad
08:29I love it for me it's a thrill in the chase of the next product can I get that product cheaper
08:34can I get a bargain for our customers can I put a smile on someone's face I think that that's a thrill
08:40for me 20 miles up the road another discount disruptor has devised their own ways to sidestep
08:52soaring costs online retailer discount dragon deliver delicious deals to bargain hungry families across
09:02the country they keep prices low by buying in surplus and end-of-line products that might otherwise have
09:10ended up in landfill saving waste as well as our wallets what's not to love rule number one it's
09:19got to be a major brand do I think that would work as a special offer yes absolutely every household
09:24needs it probably what five six quid in the supermarket they're coming on the website they've seen it or spend
09:3040 quid and get it for free unlike many discounters the company have no physical stores and all the
09:42sales are done through their website every week it's down to MD Wayne to pick the offers that will
09:50hit his online shelves and one of his secrets for stealing supermarket customers is spaving hmm that's
09:57a new one for me too so one of our regular offers is the spending gets that we do I believe this is
10:03often referred to as spaving we call it spending get it does what it says on the tin you'll spend to
10:09get there absolutely but then you're going to get your freebie these are to encourage a bigger basket
10:14make the average order value bigger and I just think it has a generally a feel-good factor you know
10:20who doesn't like something for free you've definitely caught my attention there's actually
10:25three live at any one time so the first one will get your free delivery the second one we bring in
10:30at 40 quid spend 40 quid and get your beauty set worth 1350 then we have a higher tier one spend 100
10:37quid at the moment is this whiskey gift set worth 48 25 so all in all if you're spending 100 quid with
10:45us right now you're hovering around 68 69 pounds saving that's your spaving for today new spending and
10:52you're saving but even at bargain basement prices some customers aren't always happy with what they
10:59get so Zara has been brought in to oversee returns and she's heading up her very own department of one
11:06hi there my name's Zara I'm giving you a call from discount dragon you recently made an order with
11:13us I'm just making sure you get what you want you're part of the bargain and then we make sure we're doing
11:18our job no worries thank you take care bye-bye positive outcome but customer satisfaction isn't Zara's
11:26only motivation yeah please and then just let me know I've got this job because I've got responsibilities
11:33now I'm in my motherhood era I'm a bunny mummy this is Brambo and then that's Elvis she's a female
11:49called Elvis because she's got a quiff oh lovely hair see what I did there on the factory floor
11:57Wayne's checking out the latest stock and deciding what might tempt customers to part with their pennies
12:03in this week's spaving promotion all right half one all right all right no worries the spending get
12:10at 40 pounds generally does the best for us and now what we've also started doing is layering on
12:15another one at 75 so spend your 40 quid get the beauty bundle whatever it may be on offer that day
12:21and setting thresholds like this is known as anchoring because given the option we feel anchored
12:27to spend 50 quid to save a tenner be a waste of money not to her keep going keep going keep filling
12:33up your basket get to the 75 quid and you'll then hit the next freebie just keep on going basically the
12:39the more you spend the more we'll give you we might be sick of seeing Easter eggs in January
12:46Halloween spooks in June and Christmas biscuits in August but Wayne's team buy and sell seasonal
12:52goods all year round to save their customers money ironically we're in the middle of summer it's a
12:58festive mixed pack and you might say well will people buy Christmas beer in the summer let me tell
13:04you yes they do you can see here there's really only one heavily featured Christmas item but what
13:10would happen to this if we weren't buying it well I think there's a high chance it's getting poured down
13:15a sink basically I believe they are earmarks to go on a spend and get in the next few days and I
13:21would expect that once that comes and goes these are all gone but if shoppers don't go for it Wayne
13:27could be stuck with a warehouse full of unwanted Christmas cheer coming up the daddy of discount is
13:36branching out I still get a buzz out of seeing this new store operation and in my lifetime I probably
13:43opened at least 400 stores Wayne's wish list of boozy bargains we've got vodka one vodka two then on the
13:50bench we've got the Prosecco and so only alcohol yeah and the cup price King shares his secrets of
13:59the super cheap keep it simple keep it so that the customer gets it keep it so the customer can
14:04understand and they know what they're gonna get for their money keep it simple stupid
14:08across the nation baskets are getting smaller but shopping bills bigger just astronomical honest
14:23to God is it's going up every week you go in prices are changing all the time it's just getting to a
14:29point where you can't afford after stuff the traditional multiple retailers are quite expensive
14:34so if you shop around you can save quite a lot of money opening at a rate of roughly 19 stores per
14:45year since they launched in 2019 one beyond have become the UK's fastest growing retailer of their
14:53kind and over at their Barnsley warehouse preparations are in full swing for the launch of their latest branch
15:00in Bellevale near Liverpool all what you see here is going to a shot one shot and that gets put in a
15:07row ready to go but no shop is profitable without customers so local printer Neil Ebbage oh wait I'm filming now
15:25it's helping create a buzz with some in-store collateral that's flyers to you and me so this will
15:35make an A3 sheet and then once it goes up the fold it'll fold it in half into an A4 sheet if you saw it
15:41you think oh yeah it's quite nice is that instead of like a dull colour flat colour do you know because
15:45that's quite a distinctive blue and it's got a bright yellow so it stands out it punches out how are you
15:50so quite glossy quite bright and it just draws attention and there's a paddling pool up that page
15:56£9.99 28 degrees bargain unfortunately we've got no spike band on so I don't know how you're going to
16:03fill them up and whilst he cracks on with spreading the word one A3 sheet at a time chairman Chris Edwards
16:12is overseeing the new shop fitting plans at his 250,000 square foot distribution centre
16:18just had leaflets guys new store opening hot off the press the new marketing materials have arrived
16:27this is just one of the leaflets that we do for every every new shop and this is one that's in Belleville
16:34near Liverpool and what we've got is just a very broad section of what we sell a lot of stuff is a
16:41is just for a pound and we hand these out in in the sis in the shopping centre where the store is
16:46and very rarely do we ever not open a store with a queue you know people are curious because of the
16:52kind of store that it is which is a mixed bag and the hope is that by tempting customers in with
16:57discount deals their average basket spend will increase which helps cover the costs of their
17:02cheaper items a lot of this on this leaflet a lot of it is food and sweets but we do obviously that's
17:09only a small proportion and while they're in there buying this sort of stock they're in there buying
17:14a charger or batteries or all the other stuff we sell so it's it's all just part of what we do
17:20I still get a buzz out of seeing this new store operation and what we've done and in my lifetime I
17:27probably opened at least 400 stores maybe nearly 500 stores but it's still seen when you see the new
17:33leaflet you see the date on it and you're here again you're still doing it stops you getting bored
17:38supply chain coordinator philippa has been charged with sorting the ffe that's fixtures fittings and
17:46equipment hiya all right just looking for stock as it's any stock being picked for bell bail here yeah
17:53so this is all your pos bits um see till rolls and stuff like that adders just everything you need
17:59for the shop that's not the sellable bit so some of this is your shopping baskets your shelving then
18:07the delivery of the stock starts and they probably will need about five or six deliveries to to fill
18:13a shop up I think this is going out on Tuesday so later this week this will all get moved on to
18:17dispatch ready to go onto a wagon straight down to Belleville in the main we can take the keys of a
18:23shop get it shop fit get it filled up with stock in opening within somewhere between two and three
18:28weeks and with hundreds of shops under his belt the process of opening shops is easy-peasy do we
18:35just it's just an event we just get on with it and it happens and I'm I'm good to say I'm on the
18:41outside looking in and say oh it just happens people like this work their heart out to make it happen
18:47and Philippa's not the only one working her heart out back in Wigan Wayne's crunching the numbers and
18:57working out which products they can afford to feature in this week's spaving promotion
19:02obviously when you're given an item away for free you know there's um there's a cost involved out to the
19:10business we don't get these items for free we we buy them in the same way that we buy any item on the
19:15website we'll have a planning meeting which I'm going to help shortly and let's get the next seven
19:19days plan together and whilst he's preparing for his meeting rookie Sara is still finding a way around
19:27the cavernous 40,000 foot warehouse and it's stacked to the rafters with bargain bounty
19:32this is all the stock all the pickers the packers I've done like stock taking and stuff but I've
19:41never worked on this scale yeah it seems absolutely massive to me there's just pallets and pallets of
19:49items and products and everything known as mass procurement the huge variety of stock sometimes
19:57tempts the staff as well as the customers there might be a huge warehouse to choose from but for
20:10Wayne and Tom deciding which items to promote in their spaving deal takes careful consideration right
20:17I just wanted to see the plan for the spending gets this week obviously we need one at 40 quid and
20:24then 75 to 100 because the whiskey did really well at 100 didn't it yeah higher-end spaving products
20:30create the free effect and feel like a bargain that's too good to miss but if the freebie doesn't
20:37land with the punters all the planning and marketing is wasted manpower we discussed on the call this
20:43morning the marmalade vodka yeah worth a go yeah we've got the marmalade vodka I don't know what else
20:50we've got it's the high end it's so hard to fail you got that vodka there yeah that's a good one my
20:55only concern is that when it's two vodkas if it fails do you want to put another vodka in there
21:02knowing that the first one failed we've still got the Prosecco there on the subs bench are they warming up
21:10since the Prosecco has been warming up for a couple of weeks now warm fizz oh that'll never catch on
21:15Wayne just can't get a game can I know he's trying his hardest I'd go with the marmalade vodka if if
21:22that flops I'd bring that off the bench before the other vodka that's 75 pound throw yeah yeah just to
21:28wrap it all up and sum it up we've got vodka one vodka two then on the bench we've got the Prosecco
21:34so only alcohol for now I think with that plan with stock levels as well that should cover us for
21:38the for the rest of the week you might want to add some paracetamol to that list meanwhile in Stockport
21:48Rogers have a totally different approach to discount dragon instead of marketing and sexifying goods
21:54online their warehouse is open to buyers who can come and grab what they want but this is not your
22:01usual supermarket shopping experience we're no fancy shelving we're no big signs is no frills of
22:07us is literally left on the pallet products are actually made to sit in warehouses for quite a
22:12long long time that's why we can manage to keep it cheap keep it simple and also still pay the
22:18overheads we have no music playing so we because we don't want to pay for an expensive PRS license
22:22keeping costs low is music to my ears or not in this case we don't have any heating so in the
22:30winter you need to wear your coat but the good thing is the drinks are chilled for free and
22:33obviously in the summer it can be quite warm in here we don't have air conditioning here
22:37presentation is more gritty than glossy so there's efficiencies in if we think we do because if you
22:43had to put this out on the shelf you're going to be taking this out you're going to be paying a
22:46member of staff to shelf stack this we don't bother with any of that we literally push the product
22:51into place and this SRP that shelf ready packaging to you and me offers a cheap and cheerful way to
22:57present their wares we take out a couple so the customer can see what they're having and it's as
23:02quick as setting the product day showing you what you got and then we move on by keeping out going
23:07slow his back-to-basics approach helps keep prices low see these milkshakes for the kids they're a bag in
23:13them yeah we've got a cupboards full of it kids come around we don't give them a milkshake we give
23:17them a bag of it take it home and do it yourself keep it simple keep it so that the customer gets
23:23it keep it so the customer can understand and they know what they're going to get for their
23:26money keep it simple stupid simple as that and whilst customers appreciate the simple approach
23:33his competitors have got different ideas I don't think we necessarily liked in wholesaling
23:39industry because we're not like other wholesalers in respect that we don't need to know anything
23:43about our customer we're not asking to be a member we're not asking them to shop at certain times and
23:47you know and with us the price you see is a price you pay all I want to know is you come in and you've
23:51got a means of payment and that's all I require by tearing up the rule books mark is able to compete
23:57with the supermarkets whilst others have failed have I broken the mold well if I have I don't know
24:03whether that makes me a genius I don't know I don't get it but personally it works for us it works for
24:08our customers and that's what it's about we're open of course seven days a week we will see you
24:12soon to watch yourself so come down and see us thank you guys for watching coming up we get the
24:20cleaners in it's a way to use surface product it would go to waste otherwise Niall hits a snag
24:27trialing the latest tech just noticed it says Marmel Marmeled or a met got to keep an eye on the
24:36wording really AI can mess it up a little bit and Chris reflects over his decades of discount
24:42dealing and I came across this this picture that's the original market stall where it all started
24:58getting your five a day from the big-name supermarkets doesn't come cheap with the average
25:03brits spending over 400 pounds a year on fruit and veg all the prices are going up a tin of sweet
25:09corn it's two pound and it like you could use to be able to get that for 60 feet once you can't get
25:15vegetables is too high you're trying to encourage them to be healthy but you're making it a little bit
25:20inaccessible the price of them is slowly increasing and these are stuff that you know we need to eat to
25:26be healthy and to have balanced diets but we can't one solution growing in popularity is gleaning
25:38and clubs are springing up across the country which help connect people like me and you with farmers
25:48like Chris Molyneux must be at least 10 years we've been gleaning now just helps everybody he'll let
25:55you have his surplus crops for free as long as you're happy to get down and dirty and pick it
26:00yourself it's a way to use surplus product it would go to waste otherwise
26:04Jay Godden is the coordinator of the gleaning club in Lancaster so we've seen demand kind of been
26:15steadily increasing since 2021 really we're not a food bank we run a membership model so people pay
26:21a weekly fee to access and what we do but it's it's cheaper than the supermarket the idea is that a
26:28lot of the kale that we've got here is not going to be harvested there's too much of it so it brings
26:34some volunteers in we pick as much as we can and then we redistribute that into the community he
26:41organises teams of volunteers to collect kale both for themselves and their fellow members
26:46we'll be going for this curly kale we can be pretty picky about what we're getting obviously we've got
26:55like a whole acre here and we're not going to be picking all of that so something that sort of size
27:00is probably fine at the small end maybe that kind of at the larger end okay fab let's do it
27:07it's estimated that over a million tons of fruit and veggies wasted each year on UK farms there's
27:17about an acre and a half feet we've had to leave which hasn't so bad really consider yeah we've had
27:21some decent weather now and we've got loads of crops though and so it's so you have to plan
27:28assuming that the weather is going to be bad because you still need to be making a living even
27:32if it's a bad year don't you you just got it where there's good you just don't know you just don't
27:36know you can get 50 cent more or 50 percent less or just nothing yeah I mean last year we didn't have
27:42a crop so you make sure you've got enough to cook yourself and of course the guarantee nature's gonna
27:45go do you know what we're gonna loads this year which is where you guys come in yeah well we appreciate
27:50it yeah for volunteers like Kath going field to fork isn't just about filling her plate I love coming for
28:00the greens because it's fun to be outside and doing something useful and there are a lot of people
28:04who don't have access to good quality food for various reasons despite today's kale force winds the
28:12volunteers have been outstanding in their fields it's been a really good day today we've already got
28:18about 30 or so crates like this 30 40 but the sun's out so we're gonna have our sandwiches and then back
28:24to it finish filling up the van whilst Chris's kale was fresh from the field back at books mill it's
28:36freebies of a different kind on offer AI novice Niall has been charged with designing the online promo so
28:44I'm just doing a vodka marmalade promotion so this is going on the free on us when you spend it they might
28:52have 200,000 website visitors a month but it's all about the purchase not the ponder so it's down to
28:59the marketing team to make those click great conversions create an image similar to this
29:06please similar to this please always use your manners with AI because you don't know when it's gonna come
29:12back and get you it looks like out of madam T-shards see what I like look the detail the water yeah yeah
29:24actually on an angle yours isn't yeah and the ham might have got me though might have got me I've just
29:30noticed it says I'm not gonna try and say this ma ma ma ma ma ma lead or a met and AI blunders like this
29:39known as a model drift can quickly turn designs into disasters it's all got to keep an eye on the
29:46wording really AI can mess it up a little bit easy is better Rachel come on get involved what we're
29:53thinking left me right AI actually think the first one this one the left one does not look real no no
30:02that's wrong with AI it's it's lacking in the real hand I'm happy yeah I'm gonna go in mind looks like
30:11brains have beat bites in this round of man versus machine whilst now is relying on AI to get product
30:22out the door over in Liverpool one beyond accounting on customers coming through theirs they've been
30:29popping up on our high streets and retail parks since 2019 doing well we only came in here for one
30:35thing and we end up with off the shop and whilst most retailers are closing their physical stores
30:42chairman Chris Edwards is expanding opening about two new shops a month we've got hundred and odd shops
30:52now and we're just making the decision should we go forward with more shops or should we stay where we
30:57are or should we pack it in and my boat was we'll carry an opening shops that's the only thing I know
31:03I haven't had no plan to retire I couldn't think of anything worse you've got to keep the brain cells
31:10working otherwise you'd get all too quick he's been brought up around his family's market stall since
31:17he was eight it's safe to say discount dealing is in his blood that's the original market stall where it
31:24all started Chris's discount I'm very proud of that name he looks a bit ragged I mean a lot of stuff on
31:29there which you can't really make out is is still in our shops to this day the sellotape 13 amp plugs
31:35buckets bowls umbrellas double adapters kettles and bear in mind that was a probably the early 70s
31:43we're still selling the same bloody stock that's how much imagination we haven't got whilst Chris
31:48reminisces about the past 60 miles down the road in Liverpool it's all about the future as Chris's
31:56latest store is just hours away from opening you want to just concentrate on tidying all the station
32:02you up for me all the way down force if you would make sure it's all as it was all the way down yeah
32:08they've only had two weeks to make sure the stores customer ready Chris is coming so yeah it's a bit of
32:15pressure but it's one unwelcoming with everything to consider from merchandising to staff badges retail
32:24rollout is a massive job right unfortunately this is our office it's not the best but hey ho at the
32:33back of the house assistant manager Jackie has been charged with training the 15 new starters everyone
32:40got one got an induction pass before we get started I want to say welcome to one beyond absolute brilliant
32:48company to work for somebody's after a pay rise do more tool training now so you're waiting for yeah
32:54it's all hands on deck known as snagging in retail there's no room for hiccups the smoother the prep the
33:03slicker the launch we've got more tool training going on and then we've got more inductions being done
33:07downstairs so by 10 o'clock we'll be absolutely ready and with Chris arriving any second and scarcely any
33:16customers outside Kev's feeling the heat it's only early though isn't it school holders where's
33:22everybody else just from downstairs if you're nearly in the canteen all the toilets I don't know to be
33:32honest I look just what I need to shoot people in that 12 o'clock it'll be round yeah well with the
33:41kids being on holiday there was a lot of families in the area isn't it so everyone's gonna sort of you up
33:45later and then they'll come out shopping in the afternoon so it will be a slow burner but it'll be
33:48busy yeah it will be definitely you don't sound too confident about that Kev coming up the troops
33:58arrive with a special delivery hail for everyone the chief Niall puts AI to the ultimate test bit of a tan
34:09just make him overall better
34:14and nerves are running high at the Liverpool launch day yeah we're all ready to go looks a bit so
34:22fingers crossed we're gonna be busy today I hope
34:25it's been a 40 mile trip for the kale that's been foraged by the lean mean gleaning machines on the
34:43Molyneux farm now it's finally arrived at the Lancaster Larder Food Club currently setting up tables so that our
34:53members can all sit together we like to make it an informal place and we provide cheap accessible
35:00healthy food for members of our local community managed by mighty matriarch Catherine it's one of
35:08several food clubs across North Lancashire muscles pack I ended tonight with up to 70 people expected
35:15through the door she relies on her army of volunteers Maureen boss it's not usually me just doing all
35:22of this Teresa boss can have a bunch of green trees please so what's on the menu today
35:28hey all for everyone this week we have kale which has been gleaned we also have mushrooms and peppers
35:38potatoes lots of things all my good healthy food the kale that we have is much better value than
35:44supermarkets because here people take exactly what they need it's often wonky but it's always fabulous
35:50and fresh thanks to Jay and his glean team the food club never quite know what fresh produce will
35:57arrive next every week it changes so when the food comes in everybody has no idea what they're going to
36:03so it's always a really big surprise we have fresh tomatoes we have celery the club collects surplus
36:11food from local food businesses such as supermarkets food manufacturers and wholesalers just all sorts of
36:17things it's different every week and a pick and mix of ingredients results in some inventive outcomes we
36:24share recipes between each other lots of people come up with lots of ideas including chocolate avocado cake
36:31which went down quite well not a good use of avocados yes you'll pay for this week the center operates
36:39on a membership basis and all for a bargain price of a fiver a week it's much expensive for me in that
36:48supermarket but here everything is very cheap value we get for our money is absolutely ridiculous to be
36:55honest i mean it's enough for me to live on for the week which is just amazing and if you fancy getting involved
37:02organizations like family action coordinate food clubs across the country but it's not just a bargain members come for
37:09you like you socialize with everybody you can get a cup of tea and piece of cake and sit and talk
37:18we'll start calling people up so they can come and choose from what we have got this evening
37:26would you like some cake yes please i am getting so much food for five pounds that would get me two or
37:33three items in a supermarket i have this shopping trolley and i go home with it full and whilst jay's
37:40fresh kale is delighting some thank you very much others might need more convincing i've never had kale ever
37:48what yeah and whilst jay and co are a not-for-profit enterprise 40 miles up the road in wigan booming
38:02business discount dragon are analyzing theirs yeah md wayne is nervously eyeing up the figures and working
38:09out whether his gamble on using marmalade vodka as the giveaway has paid off i don't think it was our
38:15worst performing one considering it was so niche it just kind of performed right down the middle and
38:21maybe the wrong time of year for that you know that could be more festive the orange thing
38:28so we brought the marmalade vodka in at the 85 pound threshold so we took whiskey off and we
38:34brought marmalade vodka in and we saw on the 8th of july when we brought it in that our average orders
38:40over 100 pound were four and a half percent compared to our average orders over 100 pound
38:45with the whiskey which was eight percent uh so we quickly took the the marmalade vodka off and put the
38:50whiskey back on because we found it was much more effective not a wasted exercise if we were continuing
38:54with the spending gets i don't think that would feature again you know we're putting our necks on the
38:58line giving away a high cost item we're respecting the item but i don't think the item showed us any
39:04respect back you know it didn't say i'll go i'm going to go out there and get you these orders looks like
39:08buyers weren't feeling fruity this week
39:14next door this mischief in the air if i really wanted to i could sexify way and that's how good
39:21this software is not that it would take much work obviously i'd obviously have him looking his best
39:28on a vacation a nice tropical beach somewhere oh speak of the devil talking about sexifying you when
39:36sarah thinks she'd look good on a beach looks like niall is running with this the chief
39:44right back in five better be good trying to sexify wayne like what exactly do you want it to do him
39:54i'd like to show him a good airline i love my mustache yeah without showing pecs
40:04bit of a tan just make him overall better than what he is today please
40:13the suspense is killing me you and me both
40:24must be internet must be an hard job for it
40:35brilliant what's up have you checked your what's up no please be on the law
40:43are you happy with that yeah are you happy with it so it's actually me magic
40:53i know that's it handlebar she eats it it works yeah get a wig
40:59bang on isn't it oh way lovely handlebars
41:06back in liverpool it's a big day for chris and one beyond as they prepare for the grand opening
41:12in less than an hour danielle's going outside to the front entrance now yeah danielle's doing leaflets
41:20everything's finally in place after a hectic two-week turnaround
41:24but they're bracing themselves for the arrival of their meticulous chairman chris edwards
41:29very very detail-centric so i think as he's going around he really has got that keen eye for detail
41:34he wouldn't be where he is without that um without that skill so i'm really looking forward to hearing
41:39his feedback as well looking for anything that we can obviously improve on but um i'm relatively
41:43confident we've uh we've nailed this one today and having opened over 400 shops in his time he knows
41:51exactly what it takes to get it right when you're in a business like this you've got to be on the ball
41:56with everything that's just running a business and there's nothing new yeah we're all ready to go
42:00the looks of it so uh fingers crossed look you're going to be busy today i hope you're not alone in
42:08that chris go on let's see what we've got stocking everything from water guns to washing powder
42:18if it ain't broke don't fix it is the approach to all new stores so i really like this from the
42:26obviously the latest promotion we've kind of pushed all these one pound products in front of the store
42:30we're absolutely lovely and full tidy fully priced lovely and clean i think it's the range on
42:35like every every day essential products and using economies of scale chris sources products at the
42:42lowest possible prices how are they going oh that's absolutely sensational other competitors are
42:48more expensive it's lovely chocolate as well has anybody actually counted how many items i know we've
42:55got seasonal items that come in due course and all that stuff but today when you look at
42:59a shop like this how many items will we have talk about putting them on the spot
43:06has anybody thought how many thousand seven thousand maybe eight thousand seven thousand nailed it
43:13yeah so far yes it's looking looking good yeah we're very proud
43:20you can never tell whether it's going to be a good shop or a bad shop until you actually get open get
43:24over the first two or three weeks when the newness wears off then see what you're taking to see whether
43:28we've made a good choice or not you know it's a bit nervy because if we're in a different shopping
43:33center it'd be buzzing outside by now but we are it's uh half past nine and it's a bit quiet you know
43:39so uh it'll all come together hopefully it amazes me how we can reach the standard you know in such a
43:47short time and uh we're just ready to go and it looks good to me it's instinct but you need good people
43:53like we're talking here with these two fellas you know they're um you know you need good people
43:58behind you you can't do it all yourself this is what we will aim to look like every day now when i
44:03come back in two weeks will it still look the same well that's the challenge isn't it i think obviously
44:07the manager's challenge yes that is always looks like smiles all round they're filling me with a lot
44:14of confidence as far as management's concerned they haven't got one problem i'm sure they'll pull it off
44:19if the people's out there for us to pull it off we need people we are now 15 minutes still open
44:26so the tension's building now we're all getting excited just enough time to squeeze in a rousing
44:32pep talk good morning everyone they've done an absolutely incredible job we look the part the shop's
44:38the part chris has given us the nod of approval and just remember that real hard work starts now the
44:43second we open those doors the most important people in the business for us will walk through the
44:47doors and that's our customers thank you like any new store their success is determined by the ring of
44:56the tills and a healthy crowd has finally formed awaiting the grand reveal so we don't have to
45:03close that'd be great okay we're now open
45:09a surge of savvy shopping scousers hoping to bag a bargain or two
45:13great yeah it looks nice yeah yeah we need to fight for every penny really you know there's a
45:23lot of competition around we just need to keep it going and you know make people feel welcome every
45:28time they come in this is another example of an old customer coming back not old old i mean
45:34thanks customer need a spade kev every penny counts now every penny counts i mean everything's you know
45:46so expensive but when you've got a store like this it's worth coming into finally kev can breathe a
45:53sigh of relief really good response of people uh they're happy with the range of lines we've got in
45:58store um and they've been making quite a lot of purchase been been nice and steady all morning
46:04but chris is even doing a bit of merchandising there yeah
46:10since we've reopened after pound world the high street is definitely different it's a lot more low
46:15key it's not the same but it's customers out there if you're giving them value for money and cheaper
46:21prices mean happy customers for the moment i've only picked a dog bone up and happy pets
46:51so
46:59you
