00:01Hello, who are you?
00:02Maurice Gibbons.
00:03You're an excited big advisor.
00:05In this episode, we've got Lenny Rush.
00:08He's a genius, so the complete opposite of me.
00:13Did you spot it or miss it?
00:15We've got the full reveal on Susan Triad.
00:17It's tapping into a very old part of Doctor Who,
00:20which is the Doctor's pram, Doctor Seust.
00:23We've got the heated return of Unit.
00:25Darling, it's very hot and sweaty.
00:27It is too much.
00:28That is the Vlynx.
00:31We've got an interview with the Vlynx.
00:33There's a real man in there.
00:34And spoiler alert, we've got an exclusive clip
00:37from the season-ending finale.
00:39Welcome to Doctor Who Unleashed.
00:42Here we go.
00:45I gave you a movie to the Vlynx.
00:47I'll give you a movie to the crew.
00:49What're you going here?
00:50What are you doing?
00:51Yes, sir.
00:53I'm going, go.
00:54Give me the Loviee!
00:57Ha ha!
00:58So we are back on the set of unit for quite a big day here in the whole universe because this is the opening scene of
01:05Episode seven, but because we're filming seven and eight at the same time
01:09This is basically the start of the end of the series. So there's a real fun atmosphere. I'm saying
01:16This is it. This is it. This is it. Yeah, and you're very close. That's a long time on a beach somewhere
01:22I am. It's also really hot. This is June. It's wet. You can probably hear that fan in the background
01:28People are stripping layers off darling. It's very hot and sweaty. Here's too much
01:33Just the start of the end then you guess in a weird way. How do you feel about that? It's exciting
01:38It's exciting to get to the finale because it wraps up the whole season obviously
01:44It's like the most heightened action, but like you you gain all the answers that you've been
01:49Asking questions for us throughout the whole season. What what is it what?
01:54Right on here
01:58Susan triad it genius and today she's releasing her software free of charge worldwide a gift
02:05From s triad technology
02:07It's exciting to get into this moment. We're like the climax. It's the climax. Don't you see it is an anagram s triad spells
02:17Tardis
02:19Quite like an ensemble cast for this one, isn't it? Is that fun? Yeah, no, it's very fun. It's very fun having everyone in
02:25Because obviously it's not only just me and Millie and so like
02:27It's just the two of us. It's just the two of us. When we get a gang in it's very
02:31lively
02:32I
02:34Hope every time we come here there'll be a revolving staff and new people and new faces
02:39And old familiar faces in about 10 years time the whole place be packed with recurring actors piling up on all the desks
02:45The bonnie lamp
02:46You go what about me? All right bonnie come in come in come in
02:48So that's the plan the ensemble is a mix of new characters and familiar faces
02:54We last saw rose noble played by yasmin finney in the 60th anniversary specials
02:59I want to go home. Yeah
03:02I know that feeling the last time we were here on this set
03:06It was a different doctor this time of course in his shooting you know each other anyway
03:10What's it been like to work together?
03:12It's been really fun. Yeah
03:14Because it's my first time seeing him as the doctor and i'm shocked i love it i think it's fab and
03:20Is it weird seeing him as the doctor because you know you're used to him as shooting and now he's the doctor
03:23I always knew he was like even in you know when i met him the first time i knew he'd be like
03:28Something big like it's just obvious he's so talented and he's so
03:32Vibrant and yeah i'm just really blessed to be a part of his world the last time we saw kate lethbridge stuart was in 73 yards
03:40Go go go do not talk to her do not look her in the eyes do not engage with her in any way
03:45Just bring her in jama's back today jama was here on my first day of filming and she's back now and it's fantastic to have
03:52Positions helipad doors true jama i'm actually quite jealous of your fan
03:58That's very good isn't it it's always good to have one fan yeah
04:02I suppose your episodes do tend to have those ensemble moments and it with lots of different characters you can
04:07You can bounce off the other actors and things do you enjoy that i do it's lovely i'm part of a team
04:12And i mean acting is a team sport anyway
04:15Hello sorry i didn't get your name it's harriet harriet
04:19New to who is genesis linnea this is an episode isn't it it's a big sort of ensemble cast there's
04:24There's loads of you do you like those sorts of you know episodes and stuff rather than
04:29Sometimes it was just you on your own with one other person yeah it does get quite lonely and
04:32Also you know actors we like to tell stories with other people yeah more like a relay race though
04:39Pretty technical isn't it a show like this it's all yeah i'm not saying being a princess boy
04:44No we're not we're not saying that never but if i were to rephrase that and sort of say there's
04:49Some down times isn't it there's a lot of downtime i've got my book yeah i've got my duolingo app on
04:53The girl oh yeah well you're in french yes don't ask me anything that's exactly what's gonna ask you
04:59Je parle français avec duolingo tous les jours parce que ma femme est français
05:05So doctor who's fantastic for you know your career but also for your french yeah that's good
05:09I can say je m'appelle stéphane very good
05:15You live in a house i live in a house fantastic that's good uh that's that's all i've got
05:24And there's another new face on the unit set a new but somehow familiar face as unleashed
05:30Revealed earlier in the series award-winning actor lenny rush was due to voice baby eric in space babies
05:41And so he came along to our read through he'd been so good as a space baby voice that that read through
05:46We kind of sat there went it's a shame it's a shame it's just a voice and we're not going to actually see
05:50Lenny so this chance came along to cast a new scientific advisor and i was like oh my god let's
05:54get lenny who are you morris gibbons new next scientific advisor thank you very much
06:01Now lane last time we met on a set of doctor who yeah there was uh green slimy sludge everywhere
06:07snot borgies this time you're a bit more well turned out less borgies
06:11so he had complete opposite how are you feeling about that yeah i mean i'm happy because it's only
06:16going to be a voice part and now i'm properly in the show i'm very excited that lenny is why you are the
06:22king of taking notes thank you nice well done thank you so you know when they said allison we want you
06:29to come back yeah but but for you to come back it means that you can't you're not going to be voicing
06:34that stuff you've already done how what was that emotion like is it what did you feel i think being
06:39in the show is a better experience yeah but mum mum told me in the worst particular way she come in
06:44and she said Lenny they've got your role for doctor who and i'm like what what and then she went they've got you a bigger part
06:53but um yeah i'm very happy morris gibbons yes so tell me about your new character then your
06:59your latest doctor who character yeah he's morris gibbons and he's a genius yeah a 30 year old genius so
07:06the complete opposite of me basically come on you've done that one before Lenny that's a good lie
07:16so you're a child genius who loves the old i could tell you what you've inspired me to go and get a
07:21set a set oh actually don't do that too yeah yeah very hot though in this weather yeah no sweaty isn't it
07:28yeah do you're made to like doctor you you know when you when you because obviously at the moment
07:33we're filming this and you can't tell anybody they're actually in it which is annoying yeah i think it's
07:38getting released i mean it oh is it so then i can actually let everyone know yeah finally yeah i've got
07:44some i've got friends that are like massive fans yeah so that'll be cool that'll be amazing yeah
07:51this thing is running way beyond maximum should we stop no way lenny rush what was it like working
07:58with lenny uh it's amazing working with lenny i could oh he really puts you to shame it doesn't
08:04how good he is he's so good is it really this is morris gibbons 13 come on such a talented actor
08:13name anagram target probability of a track 95 and rising yeah i just think it's funny having this
08:22child's like super genius advising one of the biggest governmental bodies in in the world i thought
08:31it was just so cool tensor with the segue that helps you get your own set so i had i have my own
08:38subway that i use yeah and now i've got one for the show they put all fancy lights on it they put
08:44laser guns is it so like a little um it's a little box you take it out yeah and you can magnet the
08:51guns to them so it looks very cool lenny absolute pleasure to see you again try not to be too much
08:57of a child genius in your real life you know because you can rub people in the wrong way can't it
09:00of course it won't happen you'll be quiet
09:10long time whovians will know that russell t davis is the master of the teaser subplot a storyline that he
09:17will seed surreptitiously over many episodes with most of us not even noticing and then it will reach a
09:24climactic finale and viewers will turn around and be like how did i not notice that when russell
09:31rebooted doctor who in 2005 the long game tease was bad wolf the big battle a phrase the companion
09:38rose tyler saw appearing throughout the series keep hearing those words everywhere we go bad wolf it
09:45even appeared in welsh blithe droog bad wolf in the series finale the parting of the ways it turns out that
09:53bad wolf is rose herself and that she's been sending herself warning messages through time and space
09:59i am the bad wolf i create myself
10:06i take the words
10:10i scatter them in time and space
10:16a message to leave myself here
10:18and throughout this series russell's been at it again back in 2023 in the giggle donna noble asks
10:26mel bush mel is this static or dynamic dynamic we're using triad we're using triad the first hint of the
10:33triad plotline unfolding now then in the church on ruby road look at the advert on the bus that ruby gets
10:41off with her christmas shopping he's a sneaky cheeky one is rtd but the biggest clue to the
10:48mystery beginning to unfold in the legend of ruby sunday is this person susan triad played by the
10:55fabulously named susan twist so come on then cross your heart or should that be hearts and hope to
11:01die how many of you noticed that susan twist had appeared in every single episode of the series
11:08well the doctor's cotton done i need your help everywhere i land a woman appears look but when
11:16exactly has susan twist snuck onto our screens well she first appeared in wild blue yonder as isaac
11:23newton's housekeeper well don't come back until you've had a very good idea sir cropped up as a
11:29christmas heckler can you do gaudete in episode one of this series she was a comms officer in episode
11:37two a tea lady episode three an ambulance episode four a hiker in episode five she's lindy's mum episode
11:48six she was a portrait with the final twist about susan twist still to be revealed i sat down with
11:56russell and susan to get the lowdown on the highlights so far russell suppose the obvious
12:02first question is to you uh which is where did the idea come from was this a happy coincidence or was
12:08it a master plan it is not true that i can't susan twist for her name yeah i think it is but but the name
12:14helped truth is i've known susan for a long time i don't know susan did i have to have to phone you
12:19up and explain this yes that was a bit mad wasn't it i calling me and saying there's all these
12:26different people and i i was just listening and then i said um another are they aware of each other
12:31and you said no they're not they're all independent and separate did that evolve over
12:36time or in terms of like what the roles that susan was doing it was when i first spoke to you
12:41i didn't we haven't written all of them so i didn't know what you were going to do in every
12:44episode and i didn't exactly know what the ending was i said we kept on saying you'd have a big part
12:49in episode at the end that you'll appear properly in seven and eight of all the characters we've had in
12:54you've played in this series if i was to push you susan i don't like to push you but which one of my job
13:00which one which one which one oh yeah i love the hiker hello there i'm being the hiker today
13:10we're on the beautiful cliffs just off temby last time i was mrs miradrew and i i i don't know
13:16i'm sworn to see this i loved susan triad of course let's face it she's got the most lines
13:22she's the best well awesome yeah and the nicest frocks hi hello if i may say i think one of your
13:32favorite performances is the ambulance actually oh because that's actually one of those moments
13:35where you really get the genre combat detected patient acquired which then makes the rest of
13:41this is very interesting because the doctor and ruby very clearly see the ambulance yeah so from that
13:45which is great for me because then from that point onwards they're like going hold on have i seen you
13:49before right and yet you can't be an ambulance on a far-flung planet what well the fans are definitely
13:54picking up on it already which is interesting they're starting to it's also a lot of people
13:58not noticing yeah they're all excited by anita dobson because at the same time there's a slight of hand
14:03with anita dobson being overtly mysterious never seen a tardis before it's very much kind of internet age
14:10storytelling where and was that deliberate yes you just hope it'll generate content it's actually it's
14:16kind of proved to be very popular uh people are really taking off with it and i mean behind the
14:20scenes in our offices people are very interested in this susan oh i love that storyline i mean it
14:26i love the part of it where she plays a different character every episode i just think that's such a
14:30clever thing to do because it's the character that you kind of go what should you just say anyway who
14:35is that the duke's lake mother you spend the whole season being like who is this woman that keeps popping up
14:41she's definitely okay she's definitely your mom ruby or she's definitely like she's you just get so
14:45many conspiracies and here's russell to add to the mix it's also tapping into like a very old part
14:51of doctor who which is the doctor's granddaughter susan he once had a granddaughter on earth who went
15:01left him and played by carolyn ford that's a huge story that has barely been mentioned since she
15:06cropped up in the 20th anniversary story and it's now 41 years later and she still hasn't been seen
15:12or mentioned so i wanted to do a story with a tap right back into 1963. if you've got a granddaughter
15:18that means you've got kids no not quite do you think susan tryad is her
15:23do you want it to be but at the end of the episode bad triad appears to nix that theory did you think
15:33i was family doctor or does she who is susan tryad really it's all to play for in the upcoming season
15:43finale
15:52still to come on doctor who unleashed i unmask the secrets of the death masks that looks good voila
15:59that looks really nice i discover how one of these turned this into this
16:05and spoilers we've got an exclusive clip from the season finale but first
16:17in the 60th anniversary special the giggle we were introduced to the vlinks hello the vlinks
16:23the robot that heads up units comms fast forward to this episode and we're back at a familiar looking
16:31unit but with one main difference that is the vlinks the vlinks has had a glow up nice upgrades
16:38hot metal doctor there's a real man in there he's really speaking and talking and moving he was like
16:45a robot octopus yeah i just wondered how he was able to do that for so long well let's go and ask him
16:52inside this ai tin can is actor aiden cook who's quite literally cooking aiden it is possibly one of
17:00the hottest days of the year so far yeah it's the middle of june and you are in all black looking
17:07a bit like a ninja if you don't mind me saying yes yeah yeah and then being ensconced what's the word
17:13i don't know yeah stuck in there yeah yeah being entombed entombed is a good word into the blinks yeah
17:20aiden spends up to 12 hours a day in his rubber and metal tomb the basic unit underneath all of that
17:27pipework is is a five mil wetsuit so i don't know if you've ever got into a wetsuit on a hot day yeah
17:34but the first thing you want to do when you get into a wetsuit is running to a cold sea yes and
17:37unfortunately i don't have a cold seat to run into so i just sit there sweating he can't hear he can't
17:43see he can't speak he can't it's such a difficult job to do and he does it all day i don't know how he
17:50does it i can move my head yeah my upper body a little bit in my arms and the rest of it is
17:54is completely immobilized aiden is no stranger to contorting his body for doctor who he's played a
18:01crooked man well hello again you old romeo you a cyberman a mummy and a zygon
18:13he's the most fabulous actor and the most patient man i have ever met in my entire life
18:24and he never complains and then comes in with his line perfectly analysis confirms life form
18:32although how he manages this is miraculous i'm not completely blind but i can't hear very well
18:39because i've got the phones and they can't see so when the director comes up to talk to me
18:45i have no idea he's there
18:53from the absorbel off to the zygons the a to z of doctor who villains and monsters is fast hurtling
19:00towards the 500 mark whatever far-flung part of the hooniverse they've evolved from
19:05a large percentage of them share one common dna trait prosthetics
19:12susan triad and harriet arbinger's bony-faced baddies are the latest to join this legion so for
19:18this episode's work experience i've come to millennium fx to discover just how they make those ghastly death
19:24masks
19:30well beth thank you very much for allowing me into is this your layer is that is that kind of
19:35that is your space a little silicon space and everything yeah uh these are all very cool
19:41but what are they and what are we doing so essentially we're going to be making a prosthetic
19:46for susan twist yeah so how did you end up in a place where you're making
19:50some of the prosthetic masks for a living how does that happen i just really liked film and tv
19:55found it really interesting and kind of liked the behind the scenes aspect of it yeah and how you're
20:00able to make these types of monsters and creatures on tv i just found it fascinating and really wanted
20:05to get into it so juice is there a course how to make monster faces there is a few surprisingly yeah
20:12yeah yeah i did a degree which was really handy so you could kind of learn everything about this type
20:18of industry yeah um and then managed to kind of get stuck into work which was really exciting yeah yeah
20:25so this is our mold of susan you can see that this is a face and this is basically a scan of her and
20:32then this has been sculpted on top of and it's created this kind of negative so that will end up
20:37flipping over and slotting into here so that's all right what happens next so the first thing before
20:43we even start throwing silicone into it yeah we've got to make sure the mold is released and make sure
20:48it's got cap plastic on it is that cat or cap plastic cap cap is like a cap that you wear okay yeah
20:54and you have this nice cap plastic edge so then it looks like it's part of her right so the cap
20:59plastic is kind of the first step i'll show you how to do it first right i'll put on the extraction just
21:04so there's health and safety and then now you probably can't hear anything so is that yeah
21:13so you just kind of want to do that and just spray it over in like a methodological day
21:18okay you want to give it a go
21:23nice and then you can turn it around you need to do the bottom bit as well yeah the whole thing
21:27yeah perfect what's next so the next step is silicone
21:38that should be all good we're going to pick this up and we're going to give it a little bit of a
21:43rotation so you want that silicon to come round to the edges i'm just going to pick this up and pop
21:47it in yeah because it's quite heavy so i have bolts in the back just because it makes it a little
21:53bit easier to try and pick it up so her face slots on right in there mask which is drawn on the inside
22:01her face is sitting on top of the drawing of the mask yes with the silicon and the cap in the middle
22:06yep the cast is left for 40 minutes to set then has a lick of powder to loosen it so i'm just swanging
22:14in this everywhere okay yeah oh you're getting there she is she's coming to life
22:25hey hey that looks good voila that looks really nice and then all of this excess flashing will end
22:32up being trimmed off to like a really nice kind of like half a centimeter and then it's ready to be used
22:38on set but before it gets to set more masks are produced and skillfully painted to add deathly detail
22:49then millennium fx's rebecca butterworth adds some grisly flourishes and finally it's time for susan
22:56triad to scare the living bejesus out of us all
22:59i believe sutax gift of death
23:11now i know i keep banging on about the sets on this show but they are amazing every time i
23:16sashay down this walkway i'm always seeing something new and immense
23:20and for this episode the whole crew have built another mind-bending set but this time added in
23:40camera vfx and to find out how welcome to the time window chamber the time window chamber is
23:48a great device that unit has had secretly hidden away we've never seen unit traveling in time it's
23:55funny they've never invested in it and we realized through a bit of dialogue the doctors
23:59always forbidden them okay do you have a time window what you expressly told us in the 1970s
24:04unit was absolutely forbidden to experiment with any form of time technology do you have a time
24:09window 10 floors down it's a means of looking into the past without traveling there by tardis
24:14for the doctor it's kind of crude this is wrong wow you have lashed this together the doctor might
24:25think this was lashed together but actually the time window chamber is one of the most complicated
24:29sets in the series the urge to pull one of those levers down is really really strong
24:38i presume that time window would just be lots and lots of green screen and a snow machine i don't
24:44know that's easy but it's such a good design team on this show that they kind of wanted to make it
24:49special so everyone thought they'd be standing against green screen and actually they're standing
24:53there amongst projections of ruby road with the church that's visible and the snow and the lamp post
24:58appears and so i think it's a it's a phenomenal piece of design the time window chamber comes in two
25:05parts a physical set built on stage six and a surrounding three-sided projection backdrop
25:12both dreamt up by production designer phil sims and his team russell had written it was this huge space
25:18with huge technical bits of equipment that were projecting an illusion of the time the reason the
25:27images look the way they do is because they're being generated from the vhs tape
25:31a vh what video cassette recorders machines capable of recording television sound and pictures
25:38in the domestic and the industrial environment back in the 1980s when kate bush was first running up
25:44that hill you could record telly off one of the three available channels onto tapes the size of house
25:49bricks on many of the machines you'll be able to program the recorder to switch itself on and off to
25:54tape your favorite programs over the two weeks you're on holiday it was the future once
26:01when i saw a vhs tape in the script i had a rough idea um because of like the older films
26:08but i've never used one um and i don't know how to use them to be honest that's the church
26:14that's the church this is the house and there's a couple of trees there the key to it was that the vhs
26:21nature of the image quality it meant we didn't need really high-res led screens we didn't need to
26:28have pixel perfect background we could create a fairly low-res looking background that was beautiful
26:36but could be ghostly although you do need big powerful projectors which need to be overlapped
26:42and merged together to create one continuous image it's a bit like putting four monitors together on
26:47your desktop and have one big image across the four of them we did it we brought it back
26:52and having gone this far with the set what's the most doctor who thing you can do next blow it up
27:00okay we're rolling we're filming the big explosion scene today so this is the big pinnacle when
27:05everything charges up and all the screens are going to explode over the doctor so that's all we're just
27:10setting up for at the moment there's a little bit with morris who's played by lenny we're going
27:14out some little pyro sparks and i'd let him design it on his desk wherever he wants but everything
27:19else is all going to be vfx there's one explosion up above there's one actually on my control panel
27:26and then there's a load at the bottom uh it'll be one two on the console number three will be on the floor
27:33and then four five with the top one firing three two one
27:47just did the life out of me at first um but i'm very excited um and it looks very very good
27:54come on then time window chamber let's be having you
28:14next time open fire all weapons
28:24so
