00:01Hello, who are you?
00:02Maurice Gibbons.
00:03You're an excited big advisor.
00:05In this episode, we've got Lenny Rush.
00:08He's a genius, so the complete opposite of me.
00:13Did you spot it or miss it?
00:15We've got the full reveal on Susan Triad.
00:17It's tapping into a very old part of Doctor Who,
00:20which is the Doctor's pram, Doctor Seust.
00:23We've got the heated return of Unit.
00:25Darling, it's very hot and sweaty.
00:27It is too much.
00:28That is the Vlynx.
00:31We've got an interview with the Vlynx.
00:33There's a real man in there.
00:34And spoiler alert, we've got an exclusive clip
00:37from the season-ending finale.
00:39Welcome to Doctor Who Unleashed.
00:42So we are back on the set of Unit for quite a big day here in the Hoodiverse,
00:49because this is the opening scene of episode 7.
00:53so we are back on the set of unit for quite a big day here in the whole universe because
01:03this is the opening scene of episode 7 but because we're filming 7 and 8 at the same
01:08time this is basically the start of the end of the series so there's a real fun atmosphere
01:15and so this is it this is it this is it yeah and you're very close that's a long time on a
01:21beach somewhere i am it's also really hot this is june it's sweaty you can probably hear that fan
01:27in the background people are stripping layers off darling it's very hot and sweaty it here's too much
01:33just to start at the end then you get in a weird way how does that how do you feel about that it's
01:38exciting it's exciting to get to the finale because it wraps up the whole season obviously it's like
01:44the most heightened action but like you you gain all the answers that you've been asking questions
01:50for throughout the whole season what what is it what right okay
01:58susan triad it genius and today she's releasing her software free of charge worldwide a gift
02:05from s triad technology it's exciting to get into this moment where like the climax it's the climax
02:12don't you see it is an anagram s triad spells tardis quite like an ensemble cast for this one isn't
02:21there is that fun yeah no it's very fun it's very fun having everyone in because obviously it's not
02:26only just me and millie and so like when we get a gang in it's very lively i hope every time we come here
02:35there'll be a revolving star for new people and new faces and old familiar faces in about 10 years
02:41time the whole place will be packed with recurring actors piling up on all the tests the bonnie land
02:46who go what about me all right bonnie come in come in come in so that's the plan the ensemble is a mix
02:51of new characters and familiar faces we last saw rose noble played by yasmin finney in the 60th anniversary
02:58specials i want to go home yeah i know that feeling the last time we were here on this set
03:06it was a different doctor this time of course in his shooting you know each other anyway what's it
03:11been like to work together it's been really fab yeah because it's my first time seeing him as the
03:16doctor and i'm shocked i love it i think it's fab and is it weird seeing him as the doctor as a book
03:21because you know you're used to him as shooting and now he's the doctor i always knew he was like
03:25even in you know when i met him the first time i knew he'd be like something big like it's just
03:30obvious he's so talented and he's so vibrant and yeah i'm just really blessed to be a part of his
03:35world the last time we saw kate lethbridge stewart was in 73 yards go go go do not talk to her do not
03:43look her in the eyes do not engage with her in any way just bring her in jama's back today jama was here
03:48on my first day of filming and she's back now and it's fantastic to have her positions helipad doors true
03:54jama i'm actually quite jealous of your fan that's very good isn't it it's always good to have one
04:00fan yeah i suppose your episodes do tend to have those ensemble moments i know with lots of different
04:06characters you can you can bounce off the other actors and things do you enjoy that i do it's lovely
04:11i'm part of a team and i mean acting is a team sport anyway hello sorry i didn't get your name harriet harriet
04:19new to who is genesis linnea this is an episode isn't it it's a big sort of ensemble cast there
04:24isn't there's loads of you do you like those sorts of you know episodes and stuff rather than sometimes
04:29it was just you on your own and you're with one other person yeah it does get quite lonely and also
04:33you know actors we like to tell stories with other people you know more like a relay race though
04:39pretty technical isn't it a show like this it's all i'm not saying bigger things that's boring
04:44no we're not we're not saying that never but if i were to rephrase that and sort of say there's
04:49some down times isn't it there's a lot of downtime i've got my book yeah i've got my duolingo app on
04:53the go oh yeah what are you learning french are you yes don't ask me anything that's exactly what's
04:58going to ask you that's exactly what's going to ask you
05:05so doctor who's fantastic for you know your career but also for your french
05:08yeah that's good i can say je m'appelle stephan very good don's a bit la maison you live in a
05:16house i live in a fantastic that's good and that's that's all i've got
05:24and there's another new face on the unit set a new but somehow familiar face
05:30as unleashed revealed earlier in the series award-winning actor lenny rush was due to voice baby eric in space
05:36babies
05:41and so he came along to our read through he'd be so good as a space baby voice that that read through
05:46we kind of sat there went it's a shame it's a shame it's just a voice and we're not going to actually
05:50see lenny so this chance came along to cast a new scientific advisor and i was like oh my god let's get
05:54lenny who are you morris gibbons thank you very much now lane last time we met on a set of doctor
06:03who yeah there was uh green slimy sludge everywhere snot borgies this time you're a bit more well turned
06:09out less bogeys he had complete opposite how are you feeling about that yeah i mean i'm happy because
06:16it's only going to be a voice part and now i'm properly in the show i'm very excited that lenny is
06:21why you are the king of taking notes thank you nice well done so you know when they said allison we want
06:29you to come back yeah but but for you to come back it means that you can't you're not going to be
06:34voicing that stuff you've already done how what is that emotion like is it what did you feel i think
06:38being in the show is a better experience yeah but mum mum told me in the worst particular way she
06:44came in and she said lenny they've got your role for doctor who and i'm like what what and she went
06:50they've got you a bigger part but um yeah i'm very happy morris gibbons yes so tell me about your new
06:58character then your your latest doctor who character yeah he's morris gibbons and he's a genius
07:04yeah so the complete opposite of me basically oh hey come on you've done that one before lenny that's
07:12a good lie okay i've said that one yes come on yeah so you're a child genius who loves the old i could
07:19tell you what you've inspired me to go and get a set set oh actually don't do that too yeah that's very
07:25nice yeah very hot dog in this weather yeah and i was sweaty isn't it yeah do your mates like doctor you
07:31you know when you when you because obviously at the moment we're filming this and you can't tell
07:34anybody no they're actually in it which is annoying yeah i think it's getting released i'm in it oh is
07:40it so then i can actually let everyone know yeah finally yeah i've got some i've got things that are
07:46like massive fans yeah so that'll be cool i'll be amazing yeah this thing is running way beyond maximum
07:53should we stop no way lenny rush what was it like working with lenny uh it's amazing working with
08:01lenny i could oh he really puts you to shame doesn't he how good he is he's so good this is morris gibbons
08:09i can meet you 13 come on such a talented actor name anagram target probability of a track 95 and rising
08:20i just think it's funny having this child like super genius advising one of the biggest governmental
08:27bodies in in the world i thought it was just so cool tensor with the segway that helps you get your own set
08:36check so i had i have my own set way that i use yeah and now i've got one for the show they put all
08:43fancy lights on it they put laser guns is it so like a little um it's a little box you take it out
08:49yeah and you can magnet the guns to them so it looks very cool lenny absolute pleasure to see you
08:55again try not to be too much of a child genius in your real life you know because you rub people
08:59that are on one way i did you watch me it won't happen you'll be quiet long time whovians will know
09:12that russell t davis is the master of the teaser subplot a storyline that he will seed surreptitiously
09:19over many episodes with most of us not even noticing and then it will reach a climactic finale
09:26and viewers will turn around and be like how did i not notice that when russell rebooted doctor
09:32who in 2005 the long game tease was bad wolf the big battle a phrase the companion rose tyler
09:39saw appearing throughout the series keep hearing those words everywhere we go bad wolf it even
09:46appeared in welsh blithe droog bad wolf in the series finale the parting of the ways it turns out
09:53that bad wolf is rose herself and that she's been sending herself warning messages through time and
09:58space i am the bad wolf i create myself
10:06i take the words
10:10i scatter them in time and space
10:13a message to leave myself here and throughout this series russell's been at it again back in 2023 in
10:24the giggle donna noble asks mel bush mel is this static or dynamic dynamic we're using triad we're using
10:32triad the first hint of the triad plotline unfolding now then in the church on ruby road look at the advert on
10:40the bus that ruby gets off with her christmas shopping he's a sneaky cheeky one is rtd
10:46but the biggest clue to the mystery beginning to unfold in the legend of ruby sunday
10:51is this person susan triad played by the fabulously named susan twist
10:58so come on then cross your heart or should that be hearts and hope to die how many of you noticed that
11:04susan twist had appeared in every single episode of the series well the doctor's cotton done
11:10i need your help everywhere i land a woman appears look but when exactly has susan twist snuck onto our
11:18screens well she first appeared in wild blue yonder as isaac newton's housekeeper well don't come back
11:26until you've had a very good idea sir cropped up as a christmas heckler can you do gaudete
11:33in episode one of this series she was a comms officer in episode two a tea lady two cups of tea my
11:40darlings episode three an ambulance episode four a hiker in episode five she's lindy's mum episode six she
11:49was a portrait with the final twist about susan twist still to be revealed i sat down with russell
11:56and susan to get the lowdown on the highlights so far russell suppose the obvious first question is to
12:03you uh which is where did the idea come from was it was a happy coincidence or was it a master plan it
12:10is not true that i can't susan twist for her name yeah i think it is but the name helped truth is i've
12:15known susan for a long time i don't know of susan did i have to have to phone you up and explain this
12:20yes that was a bit mad wasn't it calling me and saying there's all these different people and i i
12:27was just listening and then i said um another are they aware of each other and you said no they're not
12:33they're all independent and separate did that evolve over time or in terms of like what the roles
12:39that susan was doing when i first spoke to you i didn't we haven't written all of them so i didn't
12:43know what you were gonna do in every episode i didn't exactly know what the ending was i said
12:47we kept on saying you'll have a big part in episode at the end that you'll appear properly
12:52in seven and eight of all the characters we've had in you've played in this series if i was to push
12:57you susan i don't like to push you but which one of my job which one which one which one i love the
13:05hiker hello there i'm being the hiker today we're on the beautiful cliffs just off temby last time i
13:13was mrs miradrew and i i don't know i'm sworn to see this i loved susan triad of course let's face it
13:21she's got the most lines well awesome yeah and the nicest frocks hi hello if i may say i think one
13:31of your favorite performances is the ambulance actually oh because that's actually one of those
13:35moments where you really get the genre combat detected patient acquired which then makes the
13:41rest of the series very interesting because the doctor and ruby very clearly see the ambulance yeah
13:45so from that which is great for me because then from that point onwards they're like going hold on
13:48i've seen you before right and yet you can't be an ambulance on a far-flung planet what well the
13:53fans are definitely picking up on it already which is interesting they're starting to it's also a lot
13:58of people not noticing yeah they're all excited by anita dobson because at the same time there's a
14:02sleight of hand with anita dobson being overtly mysterious never seen a tardis before it's very
14:08much kind of internet age storytelling where and was that deliberate yes you just hope it'll generate
14:14content it's actually it's kind of proved to be very popular uh people are really
14:18taking off with it and i mean behind the scenes in our offices people are very interested in this
14:22susan oh i love that storyline i mean it i love the part of it where she plays a different character
14:28every episode i just think that's such a clever thing to do because it's the character that you
14:32kind of go what should you just say anyway who is that the duke's lake mother you spend the whole
14:38season being like who is this woman that keeps popping up she's definitely okay she's definitely your
14:43mom ruby or she's definitely like she's you just get so many conspiracies and here's russell to add
14:48to the mix it's also tapping into like a very old part of doctor who which is the doctor's granddaughter
14:54seuss he once had a granddaughter on earth who went left him and played by carolyn ford that's a
15:03huge story that has barely been mentioned since she cropped up in the 20th anniversary story and it's now
15:0941 years later and she still hasn't been seen or mentioned so i wanted to do a story with a tap
15:15right back into 1963. if you've got a granddaughter that means you've got kids no not quite do you think
15:22susan triad is her do you want it to be but at the end of the episode bad triad appears to nix that
15:32theory did you think i was family doctor or does she who is susan triad really it's all to play for
15:41in the upcoming season finale
15:52still to come on doctor who unleashed i unmask the secrets of the death masks that looks good voila
15:59that looks really nice i discover how one of these turned this into this
16:05and spoilers we've got an exclusive clip from the season finale but first
16:17in the 60th anniversary special the giggle we were introduced to the vlinks hello the vlinks
16:23the robot that heads up units comms fast forward to this episode and we're back at a familiar
16:30looking unit but with one main difference that is the vlinks the vlinks has had a glow up nice upgrades
16:41there's a real man in there he's really speaking and talking and moving he was like a robot octopus
16:47yeah i just wondered how he was able to do that for so long well let's go ask him inside this ai tin can
16:54is actor aiden cook who's quite literally cooking he didn't it is possibly one of the hottest days of
17:01the year so far yeah it's the middle of june and you are in all black looking a bit like a ninja if
17:07you don't mind me saying yes yeah yeah and then being ensconced what's the word i don't know yeah
17:13stuck in there yeah being tuned into is a good word into the place yeah yeah yeah
17:19aiden spends up to 12 hours a day in his rubber and metal tomb the basic unit underneath all of
17:27that pipework is is a five mil wetsuit so i don't know if you've ever got into a wetsuit on a hot day
17:33yeah but the first thing you want to do when you get into a wetsuit is running to a cold sea yes
17:37and unfortunately i don't have a cold seat to run into so i just sit there sweating he can't hear he
17:42can't see he can't speak he can't it's such a difficult job to do and he does it all day i
17:49don't know how he does it i can move my head yeah my upper body a little bit in my arms and the rest of
17:54it is is completely immobilized aiden is no stranger to contorting his body for doctor who
18:00he's played a crooked man well hello again you old romeo you a cyberman
18:07a mummy and a zygon we want the world he's the most fabulous actor and the most patient man i have
18:21ever met in my entire life and he never complains and then comes in with his line perfectly analysis
18:30confirms life form although how he manages this is miraculous i'm not completely blind
18:37i can't hear very well because i've got the phones and they can't see so when the director
18:42comes up to talk to me i have no idea he's there
18:53from the absorbel off to the zygons the a to z of doctor who villains and monsters is fast hurtling
19:00towards the 500 mark whatever far-flung part of the hooniverse they have evolved from
19:05a large percentage of them share one common dna trait prosthetics
19:12susan triad and harriet arbinger's bony-faced baddies are the latest to join this legion
19:17so for this episode's work experience i've come to millennium fx to discover just how they make
19:23those ghastly death masks
19:30well beth thank you very much for allowing me into is this your layer is that is that kind of
19:35that is your space a little silicon space yeah these are all very cool but what are they and
19:42what are we doing so essentially we're going to be making a prosthetic for susan twist yeah so how did
19:48you end up in a place where you're making prosthetic masks for a living how does that happen i just
19:54really liked film and tv found it really interesting and kind of liked the behind the scenes aspect of
19:59it yeah and how you're able to make these types of monsters and creatures on tv i just found it
20:04fascinating and really wanted to get into it so juice is there a course how to make monster faces
20:09there is a few surprisingly yeah yeah yeah i did a degree which was really handy so you could kind
20:16of learn everything about this type of industry yeah um and then managed to kind of get stuck into
20:22work which was really exciting yeah yeah so this is our mold of susan you can see that this is a face
20:29and this is basically a scan of her and then this has been sculpted on top of and it's created this
20:34kind of negative so that will end up flipping over and slotting into here so that's all right what
20:41happens next so the first thing before we even start throwing silicone into it yeah we've got to
20:46make sure the mold is released and make sure it's got cap plastic on it is that cat or cap plastic cap cap
20:54okay yeah and you have this nice cap plastic edge so then it looks like it's part of her right so the
20:59cap plastic is kind of the first step i'll show you how to do it first right i'll put on the extraction
21:03just so there's health and safety and then now you probably can't hear anything so is that yeah
21:13so you just kind of want to do that and just spray it over in like a methodological way okay you want
21:19to give it a go nice and then you can turn it around can you do the bottom bit as well yeah the whole thing
21:27yeah perfect what's next so the next step is silicone
21:38that should be all good we're going to pick this up and we're going to give it a little bit of a
21:43rotation so you want that silicon to come round to the edges i'm just going to pick this up and pop it
21:47in yeah because it's quite heavy so i have bolts in the back just because it makes it a little bit
21:53easier to try and pick it up so her face slots on right in there mask which is drawn on the inside
22:01her face is sitting on top of the drawing of the mask yes with the silicon and the cap in the middle
22:06yep the cast is left for 40 minutes to set then has a lick of powder to loosen it so i'm just swanging
22:14this everywhere okay yeah oh you get to there she is she's coming to life hey that looks good voila
22:27that looks really nice and then all of this excess flashing will end up being trimmed off
22:34to like a really nice kind of like half a centimeter and then it's ready to be used on set
22:39but before it gets to set more masks are produced and skillfully painted to add deathly detail
22:49then millennium fx's rebecca butterworth adds some grisly flourishes and finally
22:55it's time for susan triad to scare the living bejesus out of us all
22:59i believe sutax gift of death
23:11now i know i keep banging on about the sets on this show but they are amazing every time i
23:16sashay down this walkway i'm always seeing something new and immense
23:20and for this episode the who crew have built another mind-bending set but this time added in
23:40camera vfx and to find out how welcome to the time window chamber the time window chamber is
23:49a great device that unit has had secretly hidden away we've never seen unit traveling in time
23:55it's funny they've never invested in it and we realized through a bit of dialogue the doctors
23:59always forbidden them okay do you have a time window what you expressly told us in the 1970s unit
24:04was absolutely forbidden to experiment with any form of time technology do you have a time window ten
24:09floors down it's a means of looking into the past without traveling there by tardis
24:14for the doctor it's kind of crude this is this is wrong wow you have lashed this together the doctor
24:24might think this was lashed together but actually the time window chamber is one of the most complicated
24:29sets in the series the urge to pull one of those levers down is really really strong
24:39i presume that the time window would just be lots and lots of green screen and a snow machine
24:43i don't know if that's easy but it's such a good design team on the show that they kind of wanted
24:48to make it special so everyone thought they'd be standing against green screen and actually they're
24:53standing there amongst projections of ruby road with the church that's visible and the snow and the
24:58lamp post appears and so i think it's a it's a phenomenal piece of design the time window chamber
25:04comes in two parts a physical set built on stage six and a surrounding three-sided projection backdrop
25:12both dreamt up by production designer phil sims and his team russell had written it was this huge space
25:18with huge technical bits of equipment that were projecting an illusion of the time the reason the
25:27images look the way they do is because they're being generated from the vhs tape
25:31a vh what video cassette recorders machines capable of recording television sound and pictures
25:38in the domestic and the industrial environment back in the 1980s when kate bush was first running
25:43up that hill you could record telly off one of the three available channels onto tapes the size of house
25:49bricks on many of the machines you'll be able to program the recorder to switch itself on and off to
25:54tape your favorite programs over the two weeks you're on holiday it was the future once
26:01when i saw a vhs tape in the script i had a rough idea um because of like the older films but i've never
26:08used one um and i don't know how to use them to be honest that's the church this is the house and
26:16there's a couple of trees there the key to it was that the vhs nature of the image quality it meant we
26:24didn't need really high-res led screens we didn't need to have pixel perfect background we could
26:30create a fairly low-res looking background that was beautiful but could be ghostly although you
26:38do need big powerful projectors which need to be overlapped and merged together to create one continuous
26:44image it's a bit like putting four monitors together on your desktop and have one big image
26:48across the four of them we did it we brought it back and having gone this far with the set what's
26:55the most doctor who thing you can do next blow it up okay rolling we're filming the big explosion scene
27:03today so this is the big pinnacle when everything charges up and all the screens are going to explode
27:09over the doctor so that's all we're just setting up for at the moment there's a little bit with morris
27:13who's played by lenny we're gonna have some little pyro sparks and i've let him design it on his desk
27:17wherever he wants but everything else is all going to be vfx there's one explosion up above there's one
27:24actually on my control panel and then there's a load at the bottom uh it'll be one two on the console
27:31number three will be on the floor and then four five with the top one firing three two one
27:43oh
27:47just did the life out of me at first um but i'm very excited um and it looks very very good
27:55come on then time window chamber let's be having you
28:13next time
28:25so
