00:00Kate, what do you think of the film industry today? Is there still too little space for female perspectives?
00:09There is too little space for female directors. And I think that a part of that is because of the culture.
00:18We're so used to having male directors. We're so used to assuming that male directors know what they're doing.
00:23Women know what they're doing too. We're incredibly good at forward thinking.
00:27We're very, very good with no sleep because we have children mostly.
00:31And I did feel that a part of the reason why I wanted to direct this film now is because I advocate for other women.
00:39I believe that in order to change the culture, we simply need for more women to feel that that space is available for them and that they will be supported to do those jobs.
00:50And so I thought, well, if I don't do this, I'm not actually part of changing the culture.
00:56And so it was a really motivating factor for me, I have to say.
01:01And it matters to me a great deal that I was able to do it.
01:05And here I am talking about it with you. It's kind of amazing to me, really, that it's even happened.
01:10Does this debut mark the beginning of a new career as a director?
01:15I really hope so. I really loved it. I valued it. I learned so much. I appreciated it. I'm grateful for it.
01:22And the most important thing for me is that I truly adored working with the actors and supporting them, creating a working environment for them in which they felt heard, in which they felt held, because some of what they had to do was really very, very difficult.
01:40And for some of our actors who have experienced loss or had similar experiences to those within the film, it was really hard for them.
01:48And it was my job to steer that ship and be that leader and make sure that they felt acknowledged every single day.
01:55And so, yes, I very much hope that I get to do it again.
01:57And so, yes, I really appreciate it.
